Ban the Bottle The Parks and Recreation Department is piloting a BAN THE BOTTLE initiative this summer at all of our Playground and Day Camps. The goal is to reduce water bottles at our parks and programs. • • • •

WHY THIS MATTERS?

Plastic water bottles consume an enormous amount of energy to produce, package, and transport. Over 85% of plastic water bottles end up in landfills. The production of disposable plastic water bottles uses nearly 3 million tons of plastic per year. We spend over $11 billion per year on bottled water.

ENHANCING OUR COMMUNITY

• Eliminating the use of plastic bottles will greatly reduce Haverford Township’s production of waste, beautify our parks, and strengthen our efforts to recycle more efficiently. • Implementing this practice at our Playgrounds and Day Camps will educate our campers on environmental issues and stewardship. • Best practice of environmental care empowers our community members to lead by example.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

• This is only the beginning. Reducing plastic water bottles will spur us to eliminate other wasteful products such as disposable utensils, plastic bags, and more. • Environmental stewardship starts by breaking simple habits and making everyday activities more sustainable. • This is a key part of the Township’s commitment to Climate Change Mitigation and Zero Waste Action. • To learn how you and your family can do more follow the link below; Ban the Bottle Initiative check out our website at www.haverfordtownship.org.

Trail News Update Pennsy Trail Phase 2

Phase 2 of the Pennsy Trail, which includes constructing a bridge over Manoa Rd, is scheduled to begin in 2020. The current trail goes from Ralston Ave. to Manoa Rd. The extended trail will connect to West Chester Pike.

Darby Creek Trail

The Darby Creek Trail extension Feasibility Study is complete. There are several major hurdles to overcome to connect all the way north to Haverford Reserve and south to Upper Darby. Darby Creek Study - www.haverfordtownship.org/parks

Township Park Upgrades Planned In November, the Board of Commissioners approved a Capital Bond which included $2.5 million to upgrade the township parks. This investment in our future, is the first stage of a five-year plan, with additional funds to be allocated in 2-3 years. This is the largest allocation for local parks in township history and will impact the next 15-20 years. These funds will be used for nicer trash cans, re-paving pathways, new fencing, court resurfacing, regrading ball fields, benches, signs, energy efficient lights, and playground equipment. You will see some of the work and upgrades at parks beginning this

summer.

A view of a park was shown to raise house prices by 8% and having a park near by 6%.
