Township Park Upgrades Planned In October, the Board of Commissioners approved a Capital Bond which included $2.5 million to upgrade the townships parks. This investment in our future is the first stage of a fiveyear plan with additional funds to be allocated in 2-3 years. This is the largest allocation for local parks in township history and will impact the next 15- 20 years. Research shows that more than 90% of Americans support increased spending for their local parks. In these days of deep division within our society, it is one of the few things almost everyone agrees on. Haverford Township is fortunate to have 34 parks. The majority are neighborhood parks. They form the core of our neighborhoods. Our parks increase property values, strengthen the community, connect us to nature and improve our health and the environment. These funds will be used for re-paving pathways, new fencing, court resurfacing, regrading ball fields, permanent trash/recycling cans, benches, signs, energy efficient lights and playground replacement. The next phase of funding in two years will be to replace the synthetic turf field (which opened in 2009) and the lights at Haverford Reserve as well as the safety surfacing at Freedom Playground; in addition to continuing the projects at the local parks. Your input is welcome. Although some projects are already been identified and others will be given priority because of safety concerns; neighborhood and civic groups are encouraged to contact your commissioner or attend a Park Board meeting on the Fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm to present your ideas or areas you would like to see addressed. These are exciting times for our parks. Haverford Township already enjoys a great reputation throughout the state for the quality of our recreation facilities, special events and programs. In 5 years they will be even better.
