Welcome

from Moira Little, Deputy Manager

Here’s the first What’s On for 2017 but, in the meantime, our traditional family pantomime, Beauty and the Beast runs until 31st December and will make a lovely ending to the Christmas period. Some great news regarding car parking outside the Elgiva. When you visit us to purchase or collect tickets, and park in Albany car park, you can pay just 10p for ten minutes. Enough time to visit the Box Office and even grab a takeaway coffee from Café Encore! And now to our wonderful programme of events. For children we have The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen and Alice in Wonderland. However, if the children want to actually participate, there is our Easter workshop ‘Legend’ for 8 to 18 year olds, where they can work alongside professionals, culminating in a performance on stage. We have music from Blake, the Fureys and the Piccadilly Revellers. There are some new tribute acts including This is Tom, the Explosive Light Orchestra and the Beach Boys Story. We also have the return of Navi (Michael Jackson) Think Floyd, Magic – a Kind of Queen and Special Kinda Madness. If you want to get really nostalgic, we have the Vera Lynn Story (celebrating her 100th birthday), the Nat King Cole Story and Music & Memories. Get your dancing shoes on! Talking about dancing, we have Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite from Strictly Come Dancing with their show ‘Somewhere in Time’. Once again we have a great selection of Live and As Live screenings, including No Man’s Land, Hedda Gabler and Amadeus from the National Theatre, The Tempest and Julius Caesar from the Royal Shakespeare Company, Saint Joan from the Donmar Warehouse, Madama Butterfly from the Royal Opera House and if you are a fan of ballet, the Sleeping Beauty from the Royal Ballet. And finally … we have comedy from Gary Delaney (Mock the Week and One Night Stand) and Andy Parsons! If you haven’t been to the Elgiva before, why not make it your New Year Resolution to come and visit us, and I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

AS LIVE Encore

Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man's Land, broadcast live to cinemas from Wyndham’s Theatre, London. One summer's evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst's stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. The broadcast will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with the cast and director Sean Mathias.

When Gerda’s friend Kay is taken by the Snow Queen no one knows what has happened, but the heartbroken Gerda decides she must set out to find him. A long and dangerous journey ensues, as Gerda battles to escape from a sorceress, is captured by robbers, meets a prince and princess, enlists the help of a friendly crow and reindeer and finally reaches the Snow Queen’s icy palace. Michael Whitmore’s delightful adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s magical tale conjures up a captivating mix of fantasy, fable and love triumphing over evil in this ever popular Christmas classic.

Madama Butterfly Royal Opera House

*Hosted by Chiltern Film Society (public welcome)

Screened

LIVE

Opera in Three Acts. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story. Much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time. Puccini's music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerto of his young, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel dì’ as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice. ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

Seventeen-year-old Greg has managed to become part of every social group at his Pittsburgh high school without having any friends, but his life changes when his mother forces him to befriend Rachel, a girl he once knew in Hebrew school who has leukemia. Starring Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke, RJ Cyler, and Jon Bernthal.

Magic of the Musicals

Mia Madre

After the tremendous success of Twist and Shout, Songbook Productions brings you this brand new concert. This is a musical show with a difference. It follows the story of musical theatre in song from the very start. With songs from musicals that defined each era and remain classics today. From what was considered the very first musical ‘Showboat’ right up to the most current hits in the West End and on Broadway today. As we go through the decades we visit Anything Goes, Oklahoma, Carousel, The Sound of Muisc, West Side Story, Godspell, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, plus classics from composers, Sondheim, Bernstein, Cole Porter and Noel Coward. A stylish and fun evening for all lovers of musical theatre.

Margherita (Margherita Buy) is a director working on a socialrealist film about a factory strike called We Are Here starring actor Barry Huggins (John Turturro) as the factory owner. Huggins consistently fails to deliver his lines properly and the fraught nature of the shoot is exasperated by unhelpful advice from Margherita to her actors. She breaks up with her boyfriend, an actor in the film, and is divorced from the father of her daughter, Livia (Beatrice Mancini). Her brother Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) has taken time off work to help care for their ailing mother, Ada (Giulia Lazzarini), a retired classics teacher who has been hospitalised. Margherita comes to feel guilty for not taking on more responsibility for her mother and reflects on her often cold relations with her family, friends and colleagues.

Encore Julius Caesar Royal Shakespeare Company

Gypsy Chesham Musical Theatre Company

Angus Jackson directs Shakespeare’s epic political tragedy, as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control. Caesar returns from war, all-conquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power. The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), Season Director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action.

Gypsy is the tale of the archetypal stage mother, Rose Hovick, who will go to any lengths to showcase the talents of her daughters, especially her favourite, Baby June. Constantly dreaming up routines to showcase Baby June, Momma Rose is as desperate for her kids (and the other children she drags in as part of her act) to hit the big time as she is for them to stay young. Rose is tested as her children grow into young women who wish to branch out on their own. It is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of mid-20th century musical theatre. Cinderella Vienna Festival Ballet

Women for Life on Earth: The Inevitability of Ecofeminism

Vienna Festival Ballet is proud to present the tale of Cinderella, one of the bestknown rags-to-riches fairy tales. A mistreated young girl, a glass slipper, two comical ugly step-sisters and a handsome prince combine to make the perfect piece of story-telling. Vienna Festival Ballet’s production is based on the traditional story, the ballet will surely touch and reach out to everyone’s heart, with its combination of pure classical dancing and a touch of pantomime. The music contains a collection of Rossini’s most famous operatic achievements and has been especially arranged for Vienna Festival Ballet.

When Welsh women turned up at the RAF base at Greenham Common in 1981, they were carrying a banner that read ‘Women for Life on Earth’. Theirs was direct action, born of gut reaction, virtually innocent of theoretical framework. Feminists can be found wherever the planet and our fellow earthlings are in trouble. They shepherd stranded cetaceans back into deeper water, stand in front of lorries carrying live animals to slaughter, lash themselves to conveyor belts in protest against the logging of old-growth forests, march and lobby against the threat of fracking. The action they cannot be moved to take on their own behalf, they take on behalf of the planet. If the planet is to survive and human beings continue to inhabit it, this female energy must be unleashed.
