Welcome

from Moira Little, Deputy Manager

By the time that you receive this What’s On brochure we will be looking ahead to starting a new busy season after the summer break. While a lot of people are away on holiday, or enjoying the summer weather here at home, we will have been concentrating on our maintenance period. We are investing in the fabric and the future of the Elgiva building, so that we can continue to provide a wide range of entertainment for you in comfortable surroundings. Included in this year’s maintenance projects will be repairs to the roof to resolve some leaking issues that we have had. We will also have a deep clean to the building including to the outside facia. New surround sound speakers will have been fitted and some new lights to add to our already comprehensive stock of professional stage equipment. You may have already made use of our new sofas and, in addition, the café chairs will be re-upholstered to rejuvenate Café Encore. We shall also be updating our website to ensure that our online Box Office system is even more user-friendly. So why not come along, book some shows and experience first-hand the improvements that we will have made. As usual, we have an eclectic mix of exciting events, including film, live satellite screenings, tribute acts, live music, amateur productions and professional shows. And just check out our comedy offerings this season! Phill Jupitus, Jeremy Hardy and Jethro. Don’t forget to book your pantomime tickets too. This year, in conjunction with Rare Pantomimes, we are bringing you Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. What a fantastic way to spend a cold December day enjoying a traditional family pantomime!

Special Brew – Bad Manners Tribute

Dancing Years

The Special Brew are a full-on, high octane tribute to Bad Manners. Playing up and down the country, they feature a charismatic, tongue-incheek Buster Bloodvessel lookalike, along with a high energy band featuring a full brass section. With crazy on-stage antics, this fun band perform a stunningly accurate tribute to Bad Manners, and encourage audience participation throughout. In fact, the band has only one thing on their mind when they go on stage, and that is to create the ultimate party night out! STANDING GIG.

The Dancing Years is an audio visual nostalgic foot tapping trip down memory lane, reviving, and reliving the dances, dance crazes, that swept the nation, from the Roaring 1920s, to the disco dances of the 1970s, many of which have now been long forgotten. Given the resurgence of dancing in the UK, this show is unquestionably a dancing revival extravaganza, and is guaranteed to be a sure fire hit, and a show definitely not to be missed. The shows finale gives the audience the chance to join in and dance to some of the most famous dances from the six decades of dances featured (space permitting). Dancing shoes optional!

Phill Jupitus Juplicity

45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. ‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ is an audio-visual spectacle, featuring lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which speciallycreated films complement selected songs, but paramount above all is the astonishing music and stellar performances from an allstar band. The show includes songs from throughout David's career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics. ‘David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ shows an artist at the top of his artistic game, performing incredible material with his world-class band, in a unique setting, on one very special occasion.

Dire Streets perfectly capture the distinctive, authentic sound of one of the biggest guitar bands of all time. Fronted by finger picking guitar ace John Brunsdon and his band of accomplished musicians, they play with an attention to detail and musicianship that marks them as the stand-out Dire Straits tribute in the UK. Dire Streets cover tracks from early classics like Sultans of Swing and Lady Writer, through to the mega-hits of the ’80s and Brothers in Arms, taking in all the classic album and live versions from the legendary Alchemy, Live Aid and Mandela concerts. Jeremy Hardy Live 2017

The Sounds of Simon A Tribute to Simon and Garfunkel

Likely to be swearing and adult content. Jeremy Hardy is in his 4th decade as a stand-up this year. That’s a more dramatic way of saying he started 33 years ago and, without a lottery win, probably has at least another 33 years to go. In 2014, the tenth series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation was broadcast on Radio 4. He is also well known for his appearances on The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Jeremy isn’t only on the radio, his television credits include: Jack Dee’s Election Helpdesk (BBC2), QI (BBC1), Mock The Week (BBC2), Grumpy Old Men (BBC1), Back In The Day (BBC2), Not Tonight With John Sergeant (BBC2). He is also on the road all year round and has never stopped doing live shows since 1984. He’s continuing his tour this autumn!

As seen on BBC The One Show! ‘The Sounds of Simon’ is a tribute to the wonderful music of Paul Simon, through the years as one half of Simon and Garfunkel, to the enduring success of his solo career. Come on a journey as the full band take you through the early Simon and Garfunkel albums, through the massive success of Bridge Over Troubled Water and on to the Grammy award winning success of Still Crazy After All These Years and Graceland. Lose yourself to nostalgia as the full band play such classics as Mrs Robinson, The Boxer, The Sounds of Silence and You Can Call Me Al, The Obvious Child. With video clips, stories, and memories from the last 50+ years, this is a wonderful show filled with excellent music, nostalgia, and a genuine love for some great musicians. This is the UK’s longest running tribute to Paul Simon.

David Starkey Henry VIII

The Limehouse Golem Enjoy travelling back in time to the dark alleyways and teeming slums of Victorian London? Then new thriller The Limehouse Golem, based on Peter Ackroyd’s 1994 novel Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem, could be right up your (fetid, blood splattered) street. A series of murders has shaken the community to the point where people believe that only a legendary creature from dark times – the mythical so-called Golem – must be responsible. Alongside Bill Nighy, who replaced Alan Rickman in the lead role after the latter's illness and death last year, the film also stars Olivia Cooke, Douglas Booth and Daniel Mays.

Henry VIII is the only king whose shape you remember. He bestrides our history like a colossus and the decisions he took still reverberate today. The Reformation is the first Brexit; his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty and his tumultuous personal life pitted religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis. In this lecture David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry’s reign on the one hand, and his insights as a leading commentator on modern politics on the other, to illuminate both the Tudor age and our own.

Children We welcome and encourage children to the Elgiva Theatre, however some events or shows are not suitable for very young children. We endeavour to highlight and clearly indicate age suitability, but as we have to take the advice of incoming production companies who give us their recommended age suitability for their own shows, we cannot accept responsibility if patrons find an event unsuitable for their children. We suggest that if patrons are unsure as to whether an event or show may be unsuitable for their own children, that they ‘play safe’ and don’t book tickets. All patrons, including children, must purchase and occupy a seat and we have 20 booster seats available for very small children.

By e-mail: Please e-mail your booking requirements to boxoffice@elgiva.com and include: your name, address, email contact, daytime tel. no., date and time of the show/film, number of tickets required and any acceptable alternatives.*
