THE JOURNEY BEGINS
T
his is Hayati’s second issue and I thank Allah (SWT) for giving me the strength to keep at it. I am grateful for the love and support everyone showed me with the first issue. I received many encouraging emails and Facebook messages and I pray that Allah (SWT) blesses each and every one of you and your loved ones. Working on this second issue was at once exciting and stressful. I travel frequently so many of the times I will be writing from different locations. Currently I am in West Africa, Nigeria and having to deal will little things such as sporadic electricity, constantly topping up my internet account and the lack of readily available resources was a major dent in this month’s production. However, Alhamdulillah we made it and here we are. This month’s issue is about friendships based on ta’akhi (sisterhood - a bond of faith in Allah (SWT) between believers). This issue will explore the numerous dimensions of this relationship, the dos and don’ts and ways to build better and stronger relationships. There is also a wide array of articles ranging from charity to beauty and fashion. In collaboration with NGO FIH, we have brought you ten easy ways to be charitable and some don’t even require you to spend a penny. We are currently working on Hayati TV online which will be bring you up close and personal with your favourite designers, fashion and more and all the coverage will be featured on HAYATIONLINE.com. Can I wear hair extension or wigs if they are not human hair?
As long as the hair is from an animal other than a pig and or synthetic, the jurists (fuqaha) state that it is persmissible regardless of whether the hair is completely fitted to your hair or it is a removable wig. However if the hair is removable, it should be removed in order to perform wudu or else it would be invalid.
Actual and effective virginity?
An ‘actual virgin’ is a woman whose hymen (the fold of tissue that partly covers the entrance of the vagina of a virgin) is still intact. An ‘effective virgin’ is a woman whom people consider still a virgin even though she has had sexual intercourse in the past (ie before she accepted Islam). The reason for both these titles is because the virginity of a woman hold a heavy social weight and a woman’s honor and future should not be affected by her past error. - Radd al-Muhtar, Majma’ al-Anhur
Are tattoos permissible?
It is impermissible to get tattoos as the Prophet (SW) is reported to have said: “Allah has cursed anyone who joins hair together and the person to whose hair it is joined and those who make tattoos and those whose bodies tattoos are made.” - Sahih
al-Bukhari, no. 5589
However this curse is not permanent, for if you commited this sin during your days of Jahilia (ignorance) and sincerely repent to Allah (SWT) for your mistake, you will be pardonned. HAYATIONLINE.COM

Kather ine CHOWDRY The story of her journey to Islam, her passion for fashion and art and she was able to find her self and grow into her new identity as a Muslimah. Edited by FATIMA TOGBE
A
s a child I occasionally experienced what almost felt like an out of body experience when looking in the mirror. It would come across me all of a sudden and I would start to question who the person staring back at me was? It felt as if I could recognise my own soul however my body felt like it a very separate entity. More questions would follow such as ‘Where am I? ‘What on earth am I doing in this place?’ but I would quickly retract my gaze since I knew that I didn’t have the answers and to be honest it was a little bit odd. I wasn’t brought up with any religion however I did go through a phase during primary school where I attended a church club which was unable to grab my attention. During my teenage years I was more interested in other things such as Astrology, Tarot cards, Numerology and even the Ouija board!
I met my now husband back in 2002 and although he did try and talk to me occasionally about Islam it would always end up in a disagreement. ‘How dare he go to Masjid when my family had invited him for Boxing Day lunch?’ Now looking back on these types of disagreements I feel ashamed but I guess my heart had not yet softened to the Deen. A couple of years later I met a Muslim brother at my workplace who would often bring up conversations about Islam while my co-workers and I all sat together on our lunch breaks. One day the conversation turned to the subject of Jinn and Angels which quickly drew my attention and left me wanting to know more. My first book was a Dummy’s guide to Islam and then my second book was about Jinn and Angels. Before I knew it I had built up a collection of books and was secretly reading
the Quran under my duvet (I was still living with my parents at this point). My interest just seemed to grow rapidly at this point and I was hiding the pork chops my parents were cooking for me in the bin! I felt that I really needed my own space at this point to be free to explore Islam in more depth so I moved out and lived on my own. I had been living on my own for just over a year when I felt it was time for me to learn to pray so through an internet support group called Muslim Converts I arranged to meet a lady at my local masjid. I very badly pinned a hijab on my head and went to the masjid to meet with this lady, but I hadn’t told anyone about this meeting. When I met the lady she spoke to me for a few minutes and explained that I should not delay in taking my Shahaada and that I can then start to learn how to pray after this. So I HAYATIONLINE.COM

decided to take my Shahaada then and there with a couple of tearful ladies watching as I had become a Muslim. The first people to hear my news were my now husband and the Muslim brother from my job that had grasped my attention with his conversations. They were delighted and that evening I slept so well. I felt like I had been reborn; it was an amazing feeling. I didn’t need to tell my parents as a few weeks later during a family meal my mum asked me in front of everyone if I had become a Muslim? I don’t know what the difference was that she saw in me but she just seemed to know. Alhamdulillah she was fine with it although my Dad did take a little more convincing. After I started wearing the hijab permanently about a year later, my dad was very against it initially and did not want to be seen with me wearing it. I stood very strong in my feelings about my hijab and was not ready to even consider taking it off. Devastation hit my family in February 2008 when my mother took her own life. This was an awful time but Alhamdulillah my faith brought me so much strength and comfort during these times. It was quickly after this that my dad warmed to my hijab
and accepted me with it on. I still have the occasional disagreement with my family but I think we are all learning how to avoid them. I find it a major challenge to offer Dawah to them and to be honest this is a bit of a danger zone for me. I would advise other sisters in this situation just to take things slowly with your family. The best dawah you can give is by your positive behaviour and examples. When you feel ready to give some
very supportive as I had pre warned them I would be looking different. At this point I think Hijab was more about my identity as a Muslim. Being a Caucasian with an English name it would have been very tricky to view me as a Muslim without hijab. So in the beginning my wardrobe didn’t really change much I was still wearing my slim fitted business suit along with my hijab. I guess it was a slow change as I became more conscious as to my appearance and the true meaning of Hijab. Gradually my tops became longer, looser and I like to think that the speech that came out of my mouth started to also become more modest. My fashion tends to change now with my mood, I often wear western clothes but always make sure I wear long tops and cardigans and I do enjoy wearing abayas as well. These are a great wardrobe essential when you have young children! At first I really couldn’t see how my fashion degree was going to fit in with my new way of life. I had lost my interest in shopping and fashion. I really put my creative skills on hold for a couple of years while I restyled myself. It wasn’t until I bought a hand painted Islamic canvas from an artist that I felt my creative side come back

dawah make sure you have done your research before you start off on a topic. When I took my shahaada I was pursuing a fashion degree and also working full time as a retail manager. The first day I turned up to work in my hijab was a real eye opener to how people viewed Islam. Most people’s first impression was that I had converted because of my husband. As I walked through the security department I could tell they looked slightly confused as to who I was. My colleagues were

to life. I decided to give it a go myself and my first painting was for my Auntie and it said Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (To God we belong and to him we return). She had asked me for this as it was a prayer my husband had read for my mum when he took on the awful task of identifying her body. From this painting I started making more for friends and then decided to set up my own online website Made with Deen (www. madewithdeen.com) I have a particular interest in Arabic names and love to produce customised art. After meeting a very talented sister a few years ago she introduced me to the use of fabrics in my work. Now I’m totally hooked on this 50

medium and would really describe my style of work as a fusion of English and Islamic design. I’m currently working on a project to produce some fabric pictures of masjids for a customer and love making my signature Allah Hanging Hearts. I now feel like my life is very much fulfilled in all aspects and I can now express my creativity in an Islamic way. I feel comfortable as an English Muslim woman and also know I still have a great deal to learn and develop. My advice for sisters who are considering reverting or who have already done so is to trust in the Will of Allah. You may feel disheartened if you have to give up certain things that
you enjoyed before coming to the Deen. This doesn’t mean you won’t find the same enjoyment in other ways and perhaps Allah will show you a way to use these past interests in an Islamic way. Be confident in yourself and try to keep learning about the Deen, keep hold of that initial desire to learn. “And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (AI-Baqarah, 2:216)

Amiri Friendship is such a wonderful relationship between two people and most times the longer I am friends with someone the closer we get. However, there are some friendships which do not take that long to strengthen. I have met some people who within a month or two of knowing I felt as though I had known them my whole life just because at that particular time we went through life altering events together. This month Hayati is focusing on friendship and sisterhood so it is only right that we cover relationships based on Ta’akhi (sisterhood – a bond of faith in Allah (SWT) between believers). There are numerous hadiths that emphasise the rewards for those who love one another for the sake of Allah (SWT) and that characterise this bond. Here are a few of them: “Believers are like a structure, parts of which support other parts.”1 “The believers, in their mutual friendship, mercy and affection, are like one body: if any part of it complains, the rest of the body will also stay awake in pain.”2 56

“Where are those who loved one another for My glory? Today I will shade them in My
hen it comes to my friends I am very passionate and loyal. I stay away from unnecessary a r g u m e nt s and when a problem arises I work and compromise to clear things up. When things get really bad and I come to the conclusion that we are just not compatible, I go my separate way but never do I hate the person. If they were in trouble and they needed my help,
the sake of Allah (SWT), or for the sake of Islam, [should] let the first minor offence of either of them come between them.”3 It is very easy, especially as women, to get heated and emotional during an argument and end up saying things which we do not mean or will regret. I am definitely guilty of this and I have been working really hard on censoring myself or simply remaining silent when I have nothing good to say. The really bad thing about blurting things out is that once they have been said they cannot be taken back and sometimes these words can be enough to drive a wedge between two people. Islam is an all encompassing religion and recognizes that we are human and can fall prey to such emotions, so it allows for a 3 days anger period in which all parties involved have the time to cool off. However, once this time is up, they are expected to have reconciled their differences even if they no longer wish to be close. Here are a few hadiths that reinforce this teaching: “It is not permissible for a Muslim to be estranged from his brother for more than three days, both of them turning away from one another when they meet. The better of them is the one who is first to greet the other.”4

shade on the Day when there is no shade but Mine.”2

O servants of Allah (SWT), be brothers.”6 “Do not envy one another, do not outbid one another (in order to inflate prices), do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and do not enter into a transaction when others have already entered into it. O servants of Allah (SWT), be brothers. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He does not oppress him, humiliate him or look down upon him. Taqwa is here” -and so saying, he pointed to his chest three times. “It is evil enough for a man to look down upon his Muslim brother. I waited for her to bring up the subject (which I knew she would) and I gently suggested that she should try and change her eating habits as well. Islam calls on us to be kind not only to be kind to our brothers and sisters but to their family and friends as well. There is also a beautiful hadith that says that “there is no kindness in a thing but it adds beauty to it, and there is no absence of kindness but it disfigures a thing.”13
Next, what is a friendship without honesty, faithfulness and kindness? None existent! Being honest with your friends or with anyone really, is the key to a lasting relationship. I have found that when I was younger, being honest wasn’t so easy because I would constantly be worried about hurting someone else’s feelings especially if they were my friend. But the older I got the more I realised that I was hurting them a lot more by not being honest. In March, PIH/ZL community health workers prepared to give the first doze of Shanchol, an oral cholera vaccine, to a woman living in the Artibonite Valley region of Haiti.
T
his month Hayati is focusing on the non-profit organization, Partners In Health (PIH). They landed the #2 spot on The Global Journal’s 2012 “Top 100 Best NGOs” list which shines a spotlight on NGOs that are at the forefront of developments shaping the lives of millions of people around the world and in my opinion they are very deserving of this recognition. What I love most about PIH is that they are not your average NGO that simply provides medical care and social services. PIH is truly at the forefront pressuring drug manufacturers and lobbying policy makers. Their approach to the world’s many crises

is not only based on charity but also morality. In their mission statement they mention the word solidarity and that is exactly the direction in which we should all be thinking with regards to our brothers and sisters around the world. PIH was founded in 1987 to help support activities in Cange, Haiti but since then they have expanded their initiatives and are now operating in nine additional countries. You may be thinking, “Well if they are number 2 spot on this Top 100 list why haven’t they expanded their efforts to more countries?” This is because this PIH’s efforts are not just surface patches.
They work with the communities they help to not only provide health care and education, but also to improve basic necessities such as access to food, clean water, shelter, sanitation and economic opportunities. PIH also works with the local and national governments to help develop new approaches to disease treatments and much more. Although they provide help to everyone, one of PIH’s focus points is women’s lifetime health. For the past 25 years, they have worked to prevent maternal deaths and improve the health of women in poor communities across the countries they service.

I am not sure how many of you know this but in the United States medicines can be compounded (specially mixed or altered) by your local pharmacists. So you may go to the clinic and your doctor may prescribe you medication that requires compounding.
PROS Drugs that come in adult doses can be com pounded into smaller doses, bubble gum and liquids for children PROS Patients with allergies can have specially made alternatives CONS There is the risk of contamination which may result in death
So take extra precaution during your next visit at the doctors or the pharmacy. • Ask if your medicine requires compounding, why and if it is FDA approved • Visit the facility where the medicine will be compounded • Ask if they have experience preparing the prescription • Try and use the same pharmacy for all you prescriptions • Also if it is possible, try and avoid compounding simply because there is a shortage in a specific drug. It is best to wait till it is back in stock which should not take long.

My favourite health app this month is “My Fitness Pal”. Its available on the Apple AppStore, on Android devices, Blackberry and Windows phones as well as on your desktop. The great thing about this app is that it is easy to use and easy to integrate into your daily routine. The app is not just for people looking to lose weight or stay in shape but also for people trying to gain weight. There are many cool features such as community building with your friends so you can all encourage each other’s progress and features such as the food barcode scanner which I think is really cool. First thing I thought when trying out the app was “I hope they have a wide selection of food” because there is nothing worse than downloading an app only to find out that half of the meals you eat on a regular basis are not available choices from the list. My Fitness Pal isn’t one of those. It has a worldwide selection of food so no matter where you are from you should be set and ready to go.

It will get you well acquainted with your breasts so you can identify changes out of the ordinary. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO IT? Once a month. Perform each one of these steps with your arms at your sides and then again with each arm raised.

This pencil is perfect because it has a brush which allows u to blend the line (upwards) into your brow. •For a cleaner look apply concealer to the edges.

HUDA HASHIM Artist, Humanitarian and Visualizer By Ndaa Hassan Tell us a little about Huda the person and then Huda the artist. My name is Huda Hashim and I am a senior studying Arts and Technology with a Minor in Visual Arts at the University of Texas at Dallas. Basically I create 3D environments and paintings. I was born in Liverpool England and at an early age moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where I grew up for 13 years and later moved to the United States. My family is originally from Khartoum, Sudan. I am the founder of Sudan Beyond Borders, recognizing the influential individuals of Sudan and the owner of HudArts, creating 3D architectural visualizations and paintings. I believe my ethnic background and cultural exposures greatly influenced me as “the unique Artist and Humanitarian” I aspire to betoday. Why Arabic Calligraphy? My interest in Arabic Calligraphy began during my early art classes at UT Dallas. I began to realize the exposure to this form of art is not as popular in the United States,therefore I began to explore and experiment hoping to sharethe beauty of Islamic art with the Western world through paintings. When did your passion for art and painting start? I honestly believe I was born with 84

a paintbrush in my hand. Jokes aside, my passion for art grew with the realization that I can express emotions and stories through paint on a canvas.
How do you balance your painting business, school, volunteer work? Saying I’m organized is an understatement. Al7amdulilah Allah has blessed me with a solid support system. Without the encouragement of my family and close friends I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Where do you see your paintings going? I hope to see my artwork shown across the world to inspire others that individualistic interpretation of ones art has a beauty of its own which must be preserved. What inspires you to paint? (describe to us what kind of mood you put yourself in to paint) If I could express my stories through words then I would have no reason to paint. I communicate through mycolours, brush strokes and canvas. The second I start painting, its like the world is muted. Do you think Arabic Calligraphy is given enough attention in the world of art and design? Not as much as it should be but the revival of Arabic calligraphy in the modern world is great to see. Many artists like myself have taken classical Arabic calligraphy to the next level by modernizing it. (As you see in the 4-panel tiger piece). If you can close your eyes and make one wish and see it become a reality, what would it be? (pertaining to your artistic career) Sudan has many great artists with little or no awareness. I hope to represent my country around the world and toinspire other Sudanese not only to appreciate art however to also discover their own artistic talent.

INGREDIENTS
METHOD
2 medium tomatoes (300g), chopped coarsely 1 medium red capsicum (bell pepper) (200g), chopped coarsely 1 medium yellow capsicum (bell pepper) (200g), chopped coarsely 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 fresh long red chilli, chopped finely 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh oregano 8 french-trimmed lamb shanks (2kg)
Combine tomato and capsicum in 4.5-litre (18-cup) slow cooker.

Combine oil, spices, garlic, chilli and oregano in large bowl; add lamb, turn to coat in marinade. Cook lamb in heated large frying pan, in batches, until browned. Transfer to cooker. Cook, covered, on low, 8 hours. Season to taste. Serve lamb shanks drizzled with sauce; sprinkle with extra oregano leaves.

INGREDIENTS 1kg (2 pound) piece boneless lamb shoulder 6 cloves garlic, peeled, halved 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander (cilantro) root and stem mixture 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium brown onion (150g), sliced thickly 1 cup (250ml) chicken stock 1 cinnamon stick 2 tablespoons honey 1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh coriander
(cilantro) leaves 1 tablespoon quince paste METHOD Roll and tie lamb with kitchen string at 5cm (2 inch) intervals. Using mortar and pestle, crush garlic, coriander root and stem mixture, spices and half the oil until almost smooth. Rub garlic mixture all over lamb; cover, refrigerate 2 hours. Heat remaining oil in large frying pan; cook lamb, until browned all over. Remove from pan. Add onion to same pan; cook, stirring, until onion softens.
Place stock, cinnamon and onion mixture in 4.5-litre (18-cup) slow cooker; top with lamb, drizzle with honey. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, covered, on low, 8 hours. Stand lamb 10 minutes; stir quince paste into sauce. Thickly slice lamb, serve with sauce; sprinkle with chopped coriander. Lamb can be covered and refrigerated overnight at the end of step 1. Serve lamb with couscous.

1/3 cup (50g) self-raising flour 1/3 cup (50g) plain (all-purpose) flour 3/4 cup (165g) firmly packed light brown sugar 2/3 cup (50g) desiccated coconut 90g (3 ounces) butter, melted 395g (14 ounces) canned sweetened condensed milk 30g (1 ounce) butter, extra 2 tablespoons golden syrup or treacle 3/4 cup (105g) coarsely chopped macadamias, roasted 500g (1 pound) white eating chocolate, chopped coarsely 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Note: Slice can be stored, refrigerated in an airtight container, for up to 4 days.

METHOD 1 Preheat oven to 180째C/350째F. Grease 20cm x 30cm (8-inch x 12-inch) lamington pan; line with baking paper, extending paper 5cm (2 inch) over long sides. 2 Sift flours and sugar into medium bowl, mix in coconut and butter; press mixture evenly over base of pan. Bake 15 minutes. 3 Meanwhile, stir condensed milk, extra butter and syrup in small saucepan over medium heat about 15 minutes or until caramel
mixture is golden brown. 4 Working quickly, pour caramel over base; smooth with metal spatula. Press nuts into caramel with spatula. Bake 10 minutes; cool. 5 Stir half the chocolate and half the oil in small saucepan over low heat until smooth. Pour chocolate mixture over caramel. Refrigerate 30 minutes. 6 Stir remaining chocolate and remaining oil in same cleaned pan over low heat until smooth; tint with pink food colouring. Pour pink chocolate over white chocolate. Refrigerate 2 hours. Stand slice at room temperature at least 30 minutes before cutting into squares with sharp knife.

INGREDIENTS

21/2 cups (375g) self-raising flour 1 tablespoon caster (superfine) sugar 30g (1 ounce) butter, chopped 3/4 cup (180ml) milk 1/2 cup (125ml) water 1 vanilla bean 1 1/4 cups (310ml) thickened (heavy) cream 2 tablespoons icing (confectioners’) sugar 3/4 cup (240g) strawberry jam 250g (8 ounces) strawberries, sliced thinly
1 Preheat oven to 220°C/425°F. Grease 22cm (9-inch) square cake pan. 2 Sift flour and caster sugar into large bowl; rub in butter. 3 Combine milk and the water in a medium jug. Split vanilla bean open and scrape seeds into milk mixture; discard bean. Add milk mixture to flour mixture; use a knife to cut the milk mixture through the flour mixture to make a soft, sticky dough. Turn dough onto floured surface, knead gently until smooth. 4 Press dough out to 20cm (8-inch) square, cut into 16 squares using floured
knife. Place squares, just touching, in pan. Brush scones with a little extra milk. 5 Bake scones about 20 minutes. 6 Meanwhile, beat cream and half the sifted icing sugar in small bowl with electric mixer until soft peaks form. 7 Sandwich warm scones with jam, strawberries and cream; serve dusted with remaining sifted icing sugar. Tips: Scones are best made on the day of serving. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw in oven, wrapped in foil. It is fine to use just one 300ml carton of cream for this recipe.
