Issue 5 has been a long time coming. We were meant to have published
a few days ago but Allah swt knows best and Alhamdulillah I now know why this delay was necessary. It is easy to lose the plot especially with a magazine like ours where although our focus is on the Muslimah fashion and lifestyle, it is also about the Muslimah’s immense faith in Islam. This month, I want you all to begin or continue practicing religious that it is the beginning and potentially the solution to living in a more peaceful and harmonious world. Often times, religious leaders spend a lot of time focusing and associating human behaviour with a man’s religion and before you know it, the people who look up to them are profiling others because of their religion. The same way we have been fighting for the world to stop viewing all Muslims as terrorist is the same way should stop ourselves from profiling others because of their religion. May The Almighty ALLAH swt be with us and guide us all down the path of righteousness. May HE forgive and correct us for what we may do wrong and may we all attain Jannah insha’Allah. Ameen.

What really “keeps girls in their place”? By: Lobina Mulla - Suhaib Webb
Despite the unfortunate realities of abuse and oppression faced by Muslim women and nonMuslim women alike, women are an easy target for negative propaganda feeding anti-Islamic agendas. Having heard the old rhetoric on how “women in Islam are oppressed” and how the religion “forces women to stay at home,” it’s refreshing to hear a different perspective on the challenges women face on a global scale. According to the American Psychological Association’s 2007 Report on the Taskforce on the Sexualization of Girls, females suffer greater challenges with self-esteem, are more susceptible to depression, and are held back in terms of learning math, sciences and athletic skills due to the sexualization (and objectification) of girls. This phenomenon, caused by over exposure to images of females in sexual poses, clothing, and roles in the media including, movies, music, videos, magazines, advertisements, etc. is the basis for this study reported in 2007. A very interesting and eyeopening conclusion was made in this report: 28

“Taken together, the work …suggests that sexualization practices may function to keep girls ‘in their place’ as objects of sexual attraction and beauty, significantly limiting their free thinking and movement in the world.” Take the statement in for a moment. Ponder. Repeat. This study was not conducted by a right-wing Christian group or by radical “Islamists.” This research was conducted by a group of American Psychologists concerned with how the well-being of girls is affected by the process of making girls view their worth in terms of their looks. Oftentimes Islam and Muslims are accused of suppressing women’s potential. What’s refreshing about this report is that the reality behind these societal problems is spelled out in clear letters. No more blaming foreign ideologies, religions, or followers of a particular faith. “Keeping girls in their place” and “limiting their free thinking and movement in the world,” is a massive homegrown problem channeled through the media.

Sexualization in the Media Toys marketed to girls such as “BRATZ” with puckered lips, miniskirts, and fishnet stockings during Saturday morning cartoons demonstrates the pervasiveness of sexy images in the media. Images of women, or even just their body parts, are used to sell everything – from frozen vegetables, to air conditioning services and alcoholic beverages. The exploitive use of women is not limited to commercials and advertisements, but also music lyrics, clothing, and video games. The byline for an article in USA Today on January 24, 2013 speaks to this very phenomenon: “Super Bowl XLVII auto advertisers hope to drive up sales with humorous and sexy ads.” This casual analysis of the use of women to sell cars points to the sexist and hedonic trends of the advertising industry. Advertisers want one thing: to promote their product. The result of how the promotion of their product affects their audience, unfortunately, is not a part of their concern. The negative impact of the use of sexualized images of women is our concern as the public. Girls, pre-teens, and young adults begin to internalize these images as something they should emulate. Various studies show that the sexualization of girls leads to an increase in anorexia, low self-esteem, and sexual promiscuity, to name a few. The ill effects of this trend not only affect girls and women, but also boys and men. From a young age, boys also learn that girls and women are to be judged on their physical appearance. These detrimental attitudes translate into problems in adulthood, when men fail to find the “perfect woman.” The inundation of sexualized images creates an

unrealistic mental image of what an ideal woman should look like and how she should behave.
What Parents Can Do So what does this mean for parents, family members, and the community at large? Limit children’s exposure to sexualized images. Filter what movies, television shows, and other videos your children watch. Have you ever heard yourself or your peers say, “But what else are we supposed to watch?!” If we are to blindly watch entertainment without monitoring its value, then we would be like cattle, following the masses without using our intellect. Talk to your children, especially your girls, about the importance of education, being a good friend, and keeping physically fit. Having girls understand from a young age that their intrinsic worth comes from exhibiting positive values, not how well their looks emulate those on the screen, is vital to their healthy development. Teach your family about media literacy. Pointing out these negative trends to our youth allows them to see the world with discerning eyes. Just as we would teach our youth not to get suckered into fraudulent advertisements meant to scheme unsuspecting customers out of their money, we should educate them on the damaging effects of sexualization. Visit informative websites such as www.medialiteracy. com and www.projectunmask.com, a youth-led initiative educating youth on the damaging effects media plays on teen self-perception. By taking a proactive approach to combatting the negative portrayal of girls and women in the media, we can begin to change the way the world treats and views the female gender. HAYATIONLINE.COM

As you developed and learned how to eat for yourself, you most likely recognized the call to hunger and developed a habitual response (i.e. eating). The type and proportions of food you ate began to impact your body; the healthy foods for your body helped nourish you and strengthened your physical and mental development.
The fact that you even care about your prayers is an incredible sign of God’s love for you and His desire to keep you close to Him! Some others may answer the call to prayer more neglectfully, perhaps offering them on time or late, all of them or just some of them, but rushing through them mindlessly or negligently. These individuals are still nobly choosing to answer the call, yet like the junk food that can cause a body to be sick and stunt its healthy development and maintenance, this type of prayer could stunt a person’s spiritual growth, perhaps making them weak against succumbing to desires or fighting diseases of the heart and soul. Finally, just as a dead body does not experience hunger, a spiritually dead person does not feel the need or have interest in responding to the call of prayer. The difference, however, is that while the dead body no longer has a chance to experience revitalization through food, the spiritually dead heart can be revived through prayer. Prayer alone is not the key to a completely sound spiritual state or understanding, just as food alone is not the only component to maintain a healthy body. However, through developing a focused, centered, and meaningful habit of maintaining the five daily prayers, a person will, God willing, experience incredible benefits in this life and undoubtedly the next. So, once we’ve recognized that salah is a healthy survival habit which one has the capability to work on maintaining throughout one’s life, the question then becomes: How? Here are a few suggestions to perhaps get you started. Two are geared to convince and encourage your mind and heart to pray while three are specific tasks to help you begin and maintain the action of prayer.

1. Recognize the benefits: Simply consider the following as a start: “The five obligatory daily prayers, the Friday prayer followed by another Friday prayer, Ramadan followed by another Ramadan, expiate sins committed in between them as long as major sins are avoided,” (Muslim). 2. Understand prayer as an investment and a refuge: Make a list of everything God has given you for which you should be grateful. Also make a list of all the hardships you or loved ones are currently facing. Then, for each of the five daily prayers, take one item off one of those lists and take it to salah. 3. Make a chart to keep track of prayers and set daily and weekly goals: Compensate yourself based on your performance. The below is an example: Week 1: Daily Goal—Pray two prayers on time. If mess up, make up the prayer as soon as I can. Reward if meet my goal by end of the day = favorite chocolate bar. Punishment if do not reach goal = clean roommate’s bathroom. Reward if met goal everyday of the week: Movie night with best friend. Punishment if not met by end of the week: No Facebook all weekend. Week 2: Daily Goal—Pray three prayers on time… 4. Tag-Team and use technology: Building a habit often needs support. Find someone who you can text or who will text you to check in for prayers. Consider also using current technology via an app on your phone to remind you of your prayers (if you’ve used an app successfully, please share recommendations!). 5. Keep going: There may be times where you feel spiritual exhilaration through prayer; your heart may feel like it’s flying, your eyes may tear up because of a closeness you experience with your Creator. Then there may be times where you feel absolutely nothing; this can make you feel like you’re doing something horribly wrong or that it’s not worth continuing because it doesn’t make you feel any different.

ust like Sara Novak of Discovery health, I am not an acquaintance kind of person. I prefer being around people that I have known for a long time and a share close bonds with. I have friends like Charles, Shade, Akin and Yanate who have watched me grow up. From kindergarten on through university, and now several years later, we are still as close as ever. Yanate, Edgar, Abraham and Shade kept me grounded during university and the many ups and downs of life. The study followed over 300,000 people for 7 ½ years. And get this: the connections between not maintaining friendships and health was equal to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and more dangerous than being obese or never exercising. According to the Mayo Clinic friends are tremendously important to your health:

Do women really need to eat any differently than men? After all, we’re all human. While this is certainly true, a woman’s nutritional needs are more specific than a man’s. Pam Peeke, M.D., M.Ph., author of Fight Fat After 40 (Viking 2000) and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine explains why: “Women are special. They have unique nutritional requirements to keep them energized and focused, especially as they age. And that means over the age of 30! Here’s a great list of foods that every woman needs to incorporate into her weekly diet to guarantee that as each year goes by, she stays as healthy and fit as she can.” So, just because you work like a man and play even harder, your diet should be a bit more ladylike. We’ve paired some of our most nutrient- and flavor-packed recipes with each food to help you get everything you need to fuel that beautiful, wonderful, womanly body. Head on over to the next page as we begin our list of foods that every women should include in her diet. 1.) water Though it’s not a food, water is important for all metabolic processes in the body. It also helps with digestion, weight loss and improves the appearance of the skin. Drinking eight to 10, eight-ounce glasses of water each day is key, but eating foods with a high water content (like fruits and certain vegetables) will also contribute to your water intake. 3.) cranberries & cranberry juice The proanthocyanidins found in cranberries help prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder, thus warding off urinary tract infections (UTIs). New research also suggests that cranberries may promote cardiovascular health. 4.) Soy protein Soy protein is found in products like tofu and soymilk to soy nut butter and cereal. Soy protein is heart healthy (helps lower “bad” cholesterol levels) and is rich in phytonutrients. Aim for up to 25 grams of soy protein per day.
2.) nuts Nuts are full of monounsaturated fats, which can help lower cholesterol levels, and polyunsaturated fats, which can help prevent heart disease. Plus, nuts are a good source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, selenium, folate, vitamin E and vitamin A. Nuts pack a lot of calories into their tiny packages, so try to limit your serving to an ounce a day. That’s 28 peanuts, 14 walnut halves and only 7 Brazil nuts. 5.) foods rich in folate Foods rich in folate like asparagus, oranges, fortified cereals and beans. Folate is important during pregnancy for ensuring proper neural tube development of the fetus and has been shown to be important for heart health. Instead, the pros were often seen wielding what appeared to be a tiny feather duster dipped in black pigment—sweeping it over the lashes with careful diligent strokes. The Mascara Fan Brush, as the stealth tool is officially known, “is great for painting on subtle details,” explains makeup artist Pat McGrath, who credits its flat shape and synthetic bristles with depositing a superfine dose of color onto each little hair for a smooth, fluttery effect. Fortunately, getting your hands on one has never been easier, with beauty companies like M.A.C., Claudio Riaz, Paula Dorf, and Sephora offering up sleek variations this spring. Here, McGrath’s quick tips on how to maximize its fringe benefits:
• Start by sweeping the wand of a blacker-than-black mascara, like CoverGirl’s Clump Crusher or Dolce & Gabbana Intense Eyes formulas, against the tip of your fan brush until it picks up the right amount of pigment. • Place the edge of the fan brush at the base of your upper lashes, and begin gently sweeping it “from root to tip,” says McGrath, who suggests concentrating more color at the lashlines to create subtle definition. • Work in small strokes, applying less pressure as you move the brush toward the [ends] of the lashes, says McGrath. This will create a soft tapered appearance at the tips. • Repeat this technique along the lower lashes—only this time “try a brown mascara” instead for the most discreet finish.

am originally Pakistani, although I was born and raised in London, UK. I studied Psychology and Criminology at the University which is far from the artistic flare I have developed over the past years. I got married very soon after graduating, and was blessed with a beautiful baby boy. I am a full time wife and mother, and although this is a very fulfilling and rewarding role to play, I would often
find I was hungry for a creative outlet. I began to hunt for something original and stimulating to do, and after some searching around, I was drawn to a henna course with world leading henna artist Ash Kumar. Most of what I learned on the course was Body Art technique and is very different to the henna work I am doing now, but I believe it was a good starting point. HAYATI of paper as I had run out of hands to paint on. Once it had dried, I thought to myself, “this looks so attractive and very elegant, I have to find a way to somehow seal and preserve this on its surface, perhaps frame it or gift it” and so the research and testing began. The rest as they say is history. I have only ever done Body Art as a hobby and never really as a profession. I made the decision to focus entirely on the concept of painting henna on canvas and home décor because I only want to be associated with this type of work. I took the henna course approximately 2 years ago and I would admit to being one of the worst in my class. I think it took me about 6 months of intense practice to become confident in what I do; otherwise I am still attempting to perfect my skill this very day. The business itself stemmed from a Facebook page, and is currently doing really well Alhamdulillah. My travels play a considerable role in the origins of my inspiration for my work. My Islamic heritage is beautifully rich in culture and wide ranging forms of art so finding inspiration isn’t too challenging. I can often be inspired by anything from the distinct architecture on a mosque minaret, to the hand cut tile in a hotel washroom as crazy as that sounds! I am currently most inspired by Turkish Iznik Art; a fusion of Arabesque patterns and Chinese elements, it is visually stunning. I am also very fond of geometrical patterning; I have attempted to recreate this effect on a few of my pieces. Living in the west, I believe there is a lack of acknowledgment and appreciation for henna. It is currently very much an East African/Asian phenomena, and so I suppose I have taken the responsibility to be a part of changing this common

perception. I want for henna’s use to be recognised in all forms of culture so I have created an East meets West vintage range. The designs typically consist of love birds, roses, lilies and lots of swirly designs. The response has been fantastic, perhaps because the mix of traditional henna with other cultural forms of art is easier to relate to for those who are not so familiar with it; in essence it becomes less conventional. The time it takes me to complete a piece varies between products. The process itself is lengthy. It begins with the initial henna design which often takes up to 12 hours to dry, followed by the application of colour, then the process of sealing with various non toxic substances, which is repeated to establish durability. So all in all pretty time consuming practice, often spread out over the course of a few days. It’s not easy with such an active toddler! I do most of my work whilst he is asleep and in the weekends. I am also very blessed to have the support of my friends and family without whom it would be difficult to do what I do. Motherhood takes up the majority of my time, so any free time is spent working. Even when I’m not painting I’m constantly conjuring up new ideas about designs that would work well, organising my time efficiently, practising on new surfaces, liaising with clients… it can get pretty hectic! I’ve just begun painting on fabric. I intend to re-create my designs on cushion covers, tote bags and throws, so currently developing the portfolio. I am also considering to mass produce some of my existing work on to stationary and possibly something interior design related. I am keen to collaborate with calligraphists. There are still lots of avenues to explore. I think opening a shop during this recession period is probably a bad idea for anybody! Over time I’ve come to realise that presence online and at events work best for me. HAYATIONLINE.COM

INGREDIENTS

8 slices bacon (8 ounces) 4 turkey cutlets Coarse salt and ground pepper 1 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped pickled jalapeno chiles 12 slices whole-wheat sandwich bread, lightly toasted 1 tomato, thinly sliced
Working in two batches if necessary, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until brown and crisp, 6 to 8 minutes per side; transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons rendered fat from skillet. Season turkey generously with salt and pepper. Add to skillet, and cook over medium heat until opaque throughout, 2 to 3 minutes per side; transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. In a small bowl, mash avocado, lime juice, and chiles with a fork; season with salt and pepper. Spread avocado mixture on one side of each slice of toast. Layer turkey, bacon, tomato, and toast to form four triple-decker sandwiches. To serve, skewer with toothpicks; slice in half with a serrated knife. HAYATIONLINE.COM

INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 pounds large Yukon gold potatoes, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces 4 cloves garlic, smashed and coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs (5 to 6 thighs) 2 teaspoons smoked paprika Freshly ground pepper 4 tablespoons roughly chopped fresh parsley 2 lemons (1 juiced, 1 cut into wedges) 2 large or 3 medium red onions, halved and thinly sliced METHOD Position a rack in the upper third of the oven. Place a large cast-iron baking dish or a rimmed baking sheet on the rack and preheat to 500 degrees F. Put the potatoes, garlic, olive oil, 1

tablespoon water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large microwave-safe baking dish and toss to coat. Cover with plastic wrap, pierce the plastic in a few places with a knife and microwave 8 minutes to partially cook. Meanwhile, pat the chicken dry and transfer to a bowl. Sprinkle with the paprika, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Add 2 tablespoons parsley and the lemon juice; toss to coat. Set aside. Remove the hot baking dish from the oven; carefully add the potatoes and spread in an even layer. Scatter the onions on top. Roast until the potatoes start to brown, about 12 minutes. Flip the potatoes and lay the chicken pieces on top, adding any accumulated juices from the bowl; return to the oven and roast until the potatoes are tender and the chicken is cooked through, about 12 more minutes. Remove from the oven and top with the remaining 2 tablespoons parsley. Serve with the lemon wedges.

INGREDIENTS 1 (6-ounce) bag garlic and butter croutons 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 egg 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/3 cup plain bread crumbs 1 1/2 pounds chicken tenders METHOD Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Cut the corner off of the bag croutons just enough to let the air escape. Place the bag onto a cutting board, cover with a kitchen towel and

smash it with a rolling pin. Crush the croutons until coarse in texture. Set up a breading station with 3 pie plates or baking dishes. In 1 dish add the flour, and season it with poultry seasoning, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. In the second dish mix together the egg and buttermilk. In the third dish add the crushed croutons, and the bread crumbs. Dip chicken tenders into the flour and shake of any excess. Then dip them into the buttermilk, and then into the bread crumb mixture making sure to thoroughly coat the tenders. Put the tenders on a baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 4 extra-large egg whites, at room temperature Pinch kosher salt 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Sweetened Whipped Cream, recipe follows 1/2 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced 1/2 pint fresh blueberries 1/2 pint fresh raspberries METHOD Preheat the oven to 180 degrees F. Place a sheet of parchment paper on a sheet pan. Draw a 9-inch circle on the paper, using a 9-inch plate as a guide, then turn the paper over so the circle is on the reverse side. (This way you won’t get a pencil mark on the meringue.) Place the egg whites and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment.
Beat the egg whites on high speed until firm, about 1 minute. With the mixer still on high, slowly add the sugar and beat until it makes firm, shiny peaks, about 2 minutes. Remove the bowl from the mixer, sift the cornstarch onto the beaten egg whites, add the vinegar and vanilla, and fold in lightly with a rubber spatula. Pile the meringue into the middle of the circle on the parchment paper and smooth it within the circle, making a rough disk. Bake for 1 1/2 hours. Turn off the oven, keep the door closed, and allow the meringue to cool completely in the oven, about 1 hour. It will be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Invert the meringue disk onto a plate and spread the top completely with sweetened whipped cream. Combine the strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in a bowl and toss with about 1/2 cup of raspberry sauce, or enough to coat the berries lightly. Spoon the berries carefully into the middle of the Pavlova, leaving a border of cream and meringue. Serve immediately in large scoops with extra raspberry sauce.
