Welcome to a New Season Welcome to the Hazlitt Theatre’s new Autumn Season. As I sit and write this it is currently near 30 degrees outside, the sun is shining and shorts are being worn! However what I do know is this current brochure will mean the nights are closing in, the warm air will be turning cold and the coats will come back out of the cupboard. So what better an excuse do you need to visit the Hazlitt and watch one of the many fantastic shows it will be staging this Autumn. Where to start? So much on offer. But I must start with the Pantomime. The Hazlitt Theatre has a great tradition at producing fantastic pantomimes and this year will be no different. For Cinderella this coming season we have an amazing cast being headlined by Stefan Booth and the very flamboyant Rustie Lee. Hold on tight, as who knows what might happen when we let Rustie loose on the audiences of Maidstone. In the Exchange studio to compliment the pantomime we are offering our annual alternative in the way of a Christmas musical called ‘Christmas Comes But Once a Year’. Before Panto is upon us the main house is offering a wide variety of shows ranging from The Quo Experience through to An evening with Gervase Phinn and Buddy Holly and the Cricketers go toe to toe with An Evening of Dirty Dancing. This season is packed with great comedians including Paul Chowdhry, Omid Djalili, Paul Foot, Ed Byrne and Jon Culshaw. We are also looking forward to a beautiful piece of
theatre when the one man show ‘Wisdom of a Fool’ takes to the stage. A clever and intelligent look at the life of Norman Wisdom. But wait! Even more quality theatre will bless the stage when our very own Hazlitt Youth Theatre produce The Wedding Singer in late October. The Exchange Studio will deliver a really great season with productions showcasing some really amazing new talent. For the younger audiences we have Really Big Pants Theatre Company here with their swashbuckling production ‘Plundered’. Must-sees are The Noise Next Door who recently graced our television sets when performing at The Palladium. Hot from the Edinburgh Fringe we have a great magic show with Morgan and West and you would be a fool to miss the very funny duo of ‘Harry and Chris’. Before we know it the building will be consumed in the seasonal offerings that are Pantomime and, for the ninth year, our Christmas show in the Exchange Studio! So don’t miss the opportunity to book now for one, or two, or more of the great shows coming this way this season. Also you may want to consider giving one of our new Hazlitt Membership’s as a Christmas gift. Our new membership comes with a range of offers that will make your visit to the theatre an even better experience. Regards Martin Cleverley General Manager
The Hazlitt Theatre is operated by Parkwood Theatres working in partnership with Maidstone Borough Council.

Little Shop of Horrors HIRE, Theatre
A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon Audrey II grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination. One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin. Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop Of Horrors never fails to entertain.

Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve shortchanged yourself. The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana.
So get out your neon, back comb your hair, cut Footloose and remember to Wake me up before you go go!!!
There’s stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe.

Engine Shed and Something for the Weekend Present
Written and performed by Jack Lane Additional material by Martyn Bell Music and direction by Kenny Clayton Star of 1950s British stage and screen, the legendary Norman Wisdom packed houses across the UK, won the hearts of millions and remains one of the UK’s comedy icons. The world of post-war Music Hall and Variety embraced his trademark manic slapstick routine and catapulted him to stardom. Over the years he perfected an act that would go on to shape his unique style; his cloth cap, ill-fitting suit and classic underdog character leading Charlie Chaplin to describe him as his ‘favourite clown’. Success on the silver screen including the hit song ‘Don’t Laugh at Me’ sealed his fame. But, as ever, fame came at a price… Portraying thirty characters in this tour de force performance, Jack Lane takes you on an emotional roller coaster, revealing the man – and the extraordinary talent – behind the Gump costume. The Gump costume that features in the play belonged to Norman himself and has been generously loaned to the production by his son and daughter, Nicholas and Jacqueline Wisdom.

A Christmas Carol Mr Charles Dickens presents A Christmas Carol! Following on from last year’s sell-out tour, European Arts Company returns with a heart-warming evening in the presence of the author himself. A Christmas Carol was the first public reading Charles Dickens gave of his own work. He enacted it over 150 times and the effect on the public was phenomenal. ‘The success was most wonderful and prodigious – perfectly overwhelming and astounding altogether!’ he said after the first night. This Christmas, you can experience what it must have been like to be in the audience! Actor John O’Connor faithfully recreates Dickens’s famous performance of his best-loved ghost story. Come and enjoy a seasonal treat in the spirit of Christmas past, present and future. Directed by Peter Craze. In support of the children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Daniel Blake is a skilled joiner in North East England who finds himself unemployed following a heart attack. For the first time in his life, he must try to negotiate the benefits system but finds himself lost in a labyrinth of over-complex legislation administered by agency staff reading a script from a computer. Ken Loach pulls no punches in his hard-hitting critique of the government’s welfare system.
Subtitled ‘From motion comes emotion’, it quickly becomes clear what sort of motions dominate Piku’s life. She is a successful architect living in Delhi, looking after her 70-year-old father, a hypochondriac who is obsessed with the state of his bowels. The two of them need to take a trip to Kolkata but the only person who will take them is local cab company owner Rana. This offbeat Hindi comedy mixes broad lavatorial humour with astute observations on modern Indian families.

THE EAGLE HUNTRESS (2016) HUNT FOR THE WILDER PEOPLE (2016)
UK/Mongolia/USA, 87 Mins, Cert: U
In the inhospitable Altai mountains of Northern Mongolia, the nomadic people have a long tradition of training eagles to hunt for food and fur to make their winter clothing. One Kazakh eagle hunter (having no male heir to pass his skills on to) elects to train his 13-year-old daughter Aisholpan instead, a responsibility she takes to with great enthusiasm. Otto Bell’s utterly captivating documentary has been enthusiastically championed by critics and audiences the world over.
NZ, 101 mins, Cert: 12A Brought up in a succession of foster homes, city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside with loving Aunt Bella and cantankerous Uncle Hec. When Ricky decides to run away, Uncle Hec realizes the only sensible thing to do is to go with him. Soon their disappearance into the wilderness sparks a nationwide manhunt.
