2 BOX OFFICE: 01622 758611
Welcome to a New Season Welcome to the Hazlitt Theatre’s new Spring Season. We hope that you all enjoyed a fantastic festive time and are ready for a great year ahead. What could help make it a great year………? A trip to see one of the many brilliant productions here at the Hazlitt Theatre. January to April are the months that will be making up our Spring Season and they are packed with a huge variety of performances so there should be something for everyone from young to old. However the year kicks off with a performance that is definitely for our older ones when we offer the very funny, but very adult pantomime Hansel and Gretel Go Down In The Woods. January 2019 will also see the Hazlitt Studio Theatre complete it’s near £70,000 makeover. New black drapes have been hung, a new technical box has been created, new on stage flats for the stage have been built and a state of the art seating unit has been implemented in order for the Studio to remain a multi purpose space, but offer high quality and comfortable seating for the performances that take place in there. The Spring Season will see some relatively new theatre be played out in the studio by way of such productions titled ‘The Shy Manifesto’, ‘Marilyn’, ‘Where is Mrs Christie’ and ‘Do You Think That’s Wise’ of which the details of these shows can be found in this very brochure. For our comedy lovers amongst you we are pleased to be welcoming such acts as the very popular Stephen K Amos, Matt Forde, Lucy Porter and Hal Cruttenden
amongst others. And talking of comedy, the Hazlitt Theatre will also be hosting monthly showcase of ‘The Comedy Store, Maidstone’ where several top acts can be seen in just one night. These monthly nights kick off in February. Music fanatics will be pleased to see we have Ruby Turner coming back, Barbara Dickson will be live on stage, a brilliant band The Wild Tonics will appear in January and we are extremely proud to present Naturally 7 in February. We complement this selection with some great Tribute Acts by way of ‘Bob Marley Legend’, ‘Bob Dylan Story’ and ‘Best of Wham’. And for the younger ones there will be a stunning production with The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio in the Main House and in the Studio we have performances of ‘Hoot Owl’, ‘Wow it’s Night Time’ and ‘Sourpuss’. For those that want to go on stage the Youth Theatre Department will be directing two productions in the February Half Term for anyone to be a part of. For 6 - 11yrs (Primary School) we will be staging ‘Matilda’ and for the 11 - 18yrs (Secondary School) we will be offering a musical theatre week, with the aptly named ‘Best of Broadway’. From young to old, whether it’s watching a performance or being in one, the Hazlitt Spring Season certainly does have something for everyone! Martin Cleverley General Manager

I, TONYA
In the run up to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, the world of competitive figure skating was gripped by the story of Tonya Harding, a brilliant US performer who came under suspicion following a vicious attack on her one-time friend and now rival, Nancy Kerrigan. This electrifying drama-documentary contrasts the different backgrounds of the two – Harding the girl from the wrong side of the tracks versus Kerrigan, the allAmerican golden girl.

THE DEATH OF STALIN
After Josef Stalin dies following a brain haemorrhage, the resulting power vacuum induces a major panic amongst the Council of Ministers. Having realized that their leader was in fact human, a rush is on to fill the vacancy. As various deputies try to out-manoeuvre the scheming chief of police, Lavrenti Beria, fragile alliances form and break down in the quest for survival. Armando Ianucci courted controversy with his hilarious ‘what-if?’ look at the way events might have unfolded.

SLACK BAY
Northern France, 1910. Every year, the wealthy van Peteghem family like to take their summer holidays near the beach at picturesque Slack Bay, Pas-de-Calais. This year however several people have disappeared in the area and two bumbling police inspectors, Machin and Malfoy have been assigned to the case. This broad comedy veers between slapstick and French farce while still cleverly evoking the gentler pleasures of a bygone era.

THE NILE HILTON INCIDENT
In Cairo, a pop star is brutally murdered in an upmarket hotel. What appears at first to be a routine murder case proves to be anything but as the detective in charge uncovers a trail of lies and corruption implicating shadowy figures at the very top of Egyptian society. The backdrop of the lead-up to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution lends added urgency to this tense police procedural.

FUNNY COW
If you think that modern stand-up is still a male dominated environment, watch Funny Cow and see what things were like in the good old days. Maxine Peak is outstanding as an aspiring female comedian on the unforgiving 70s Northern club circuit. The story of how she uses her life experiences, from brutal father to an abusive husband makes for gritty but rewarding viewing and there is a host of cameos from the likes of John Bishop and Vic Reeves.
