Welcome to a New Season Welcome to the Hazlitt Theatre and its brand new Spring Season. With another pantomime behind us, the Christmas trees put away and the decorations back in their boxes why not start 2019 with yet more fantastic entertainment at Kent’s most welcoming venue. 2019 will see the Hazlitt focus a lot more of its programming geared at the family market and the Spring season will be no stranger to that trend. We have productions in for so many families to enjoy with recognisable titles such as The Abominable Snowman, Little Red Riding Hood, Noggin the Nog, Sam and Mark from CBBC, Little Mix Experience, The Jungle book, Wizard of Oz and coming in May an amazing production of Guess How Much I Love You. The Hazlitt already opens it’s doors to so many young people every week with its fantastic Youth Theatre and now we would like to welcome even more young people to experience live theatre first hand. 2019 will also see the launch of ‘Hazlitt Live and Local’. This will be a monthly event taking place in the Exchange Studio where we will champion new and local songwriters, singers and bands. Working with Fred Clark, a renowned local musician himself, the doors to the studio will be opened on the last Thursday of every month to display the amazing musical talent of Maidstone and it’s surrounding areas.
Comedy is strong on the agenda this season, especially in the Exchange Studio with some high calibre acts on the way up in the world of making us laugh. The brilliant Andrew Lawrence will play in early February and then he is followed by Geoff Norcott, Craig Campbell, Jarleth Regan and Angela Barnes. All of which will make for a great night out. The Main house will see the likes of Alun Cochrane, John Robins and the Hilarious Phil Wang make you all bend double with laughter. For those of you looking for something a little more alternative we welcome back the unbelievable world of Circus of Horrors, there is an Evening of Burlesque and for those of you brave enough......Puppetry of the Penis. We have some really compelling and new theatre in both venues, tribute a plenty and somewhere amongst all of that.......even some Ballet! So we are more than confident that there is something in the Spring season to tickle the fancy of you all, so don’t be shy and make sure you book your seats nice and early. Regards Martin Cleverley General Manager
The Hazlitt Theatre is operated by Parkwood Theatres working in partnership with Maidstone Borough Council.

They shepherd stranded cetaceans back into deeper w ater, stand in front o f lorries carrying l ive animals to slaughter, lash themselves to conveyor belts in protest against t he logging of old-growth forests, march and lobby against the t hreat of f racking. The action they c annot be m oved to t ake on their own behalf, they take on b ehalf of the planet. Hidden Figures tells the incredible but true story of a group of African-American women who were key to NASA’s early work in the space race. In the days when electronic computers were generally unreliable, these mathematical geniuses performed the necessary calculations to ensure that John Glenn could be carried into space on his pioneering flight and more importantly, come back safely.
Theatrical legend Sir Michael Gifford is terminally ill with Parkinson’s disease. Hungarian actress Dorottya arrives as just another in a long line of badly treated carers though she secretly hopes to become his acting pupil. Sir Michael bullies and exploits her until an impromptu exchange of lines from Shakespeare causes them to bond. Shot largely in Kent, this warm and engaging movie features a fine performance from Brian Cox as the aging thespian.

MOONLIGHT (2016) US 111 mins Cert: 15 Moonlight took the Best Picture Oscar despite a small but highly publicised mix-up with a certain other film. It tells the story of Chiron, whom we meet initially as a 9-year old black kid growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami during the ‘War on Drugs’ era. This coming-of-age drama returns to him in his teenage years, and later, dealing with a broken home, the violence around him and ultimately his own sexuality.

THE SALESMAN (2016) Iran/FR 124 mins Cert: 12 The future looks promising for amateur actors Emad and Rana as they prepare for opening night on their production of Arthur Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’. However when dangerous work on a neighbouring building forces the couple to leave their home and move into a new apartment, a case of mistaken identity sees a shocking and violent incident throw their lives into turmoil.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (2016) US 116 mins Cert: 15 Nocturnal Animals is fashion designer Tom Ford’s second film (following A Single Man); a romantic thriller of perhaps shocking intimacy which looks at the thin lines between love and cruelty, revenge and redemption. The film stars Jake Ghyllenhall and Amy Adams as a divorced couple forced to face uncomfortable truths about themselves.
