Parade of Homes Awards Celebration Hosted Virtually
H
BA members and friends gathered online Wednesday, June 17 to celebrate the winners of the Distinctive Plan & Design and Pick of the Parade awards. Each spring, local home builders compete for top honors in the awards competition held in conjunction with the Spring Parade of Homes. Forty judges from around the Midwest convened on Kansas City June 11-12 to evaluate contest entries. Builders’ entries were rigorously judged on their craftsmanship and unique designs. Winners were announced virtually by MCs Kelly Urich of 94.9 KCMO and Parade Committee member Bryan Keller of McCray Lumber.
Thank you to all who watched the awards celebration and congratulations to all the winners!
This was the first time the awards celebration was held virtually. The evening began with a happy hour from 6:30-7:00 p.m. featuring photos from previous award ceremonies as well as videos from Parade sponsor Mike Bryant Heating & Cooling and from a few of this year’s Parade judges. The presentation started at 7:00 p.m. and included shots of “watch parties” at various builders’ homes. Everyone raised a glass in honor of past president Leo Ashner, who passed away the week prior.

Cheers to 20 Years: Wishing Gina a Happy Retirement
A
lthough most of us know Gina Battle as the Parade of Homes Director, she first joined the KCHBA staff in the early 1980s. Her first tenure at KCHBA lasted almost a decade, during which she focused on membership healthcare. It was not until Gina’s second time on staff at the KCHBA that she became the Parade of Homes Director. Gina’s first Parade was in the Fall of 2010, which clocked in at 192 homes. For 10 years Gina oversaw a Parade of Homes that steadily grew, with Parades now frequently being double the size of her first one. Gina retired at the beginning of June. Before she packed up her office, we sat down to talk about her almost 20 combined years with the KCHBA. How did you first come to work for the KCHBA? “The first time around a coworker at my current job moved to the HBA,” said Gina. “She referred me and I was hired by the HBA shortly after.” In 2010, Gina was made aware the KCHBA needed a Parade of Homes Director and she joined the staff once again. Continued on page 9
8
What have you seen change over the years? The KCHBA itself has seen major changes in its 83 years. When reflecting on her first tenure, Gina says the difference in meetings sticks out in her head. “Board meetings were a big affair, with cocktails followed by a steak lunch.” Monthly membership gatherings also looked a bit different. “We had to book a hotel ballroom every month to hold these meetings. Times have really changed.” Gina has also seen housing design trends evolve. In her opinion, it was often for the better. “I really enjoy the way the houses look right now. I love the modern take on retro trends and all the mixed materials being used within the homes. I also love the diversity of lighting fixtures. They add so much character.” What have you enjoyed most about being the Parade of Homes Director? “I loved being part of a project that I believe to be of great value. Not just to the builders, but to the vendors, suppliers, the trade force, realtors, bankers… all the different trades that make a house a home. It was a pretty great gig.” And Gina always loved seeing everyone come together to celebrate the Parade. “I’ll miss the awards ceremonies. They’re just fun; I get energy from them and everyone is happy to be there… I have also had great co-workers. We had a lot of fun over the years.” One thing Gina will NOT miss is lugging Parade guide boxes around. Which makes sense, as she regularly ordered upwards of 1,500 boxes for each Parade. “Luckily, I had more help with that over the past few years.” What are you most looking forward to in retirement? “So much!” Gina exclaimed. As far as a daily routine, “I look forward to being able to get up and stay in my pajamas until 9:00 or 10:00 while I drink my coffee.” Although getting a few house projects completed is on her agenda, Gina does not plan to spend all her time at home. She is looking forward to future travels, seeing more of her grandkids and friends, and possibly volunteering with Veterans Community Project. We already miss seeing Gina around the office, but the KCHBA congratulates her on a well-deserved retirement!

t is with great sadness that ****** Local Representation ****** the KCHBA announces the Auto Worker’s Compensation Health/Life passing of past president Leo Ashner last month. Leo started building in 1957. He joined the FREE subcontractor insurance certificate review service for KCHBA in 1958 and became President in 1993. He was honored and inducted into the Builder ******Local Representation****** Hall of Fame in 1997. Leo began his career in the home building industry by building houses in Prairie Village and Northern Insuring Kansas City area builders for more than 50 years Overland Park in the Kroh Brothers and JC Nichols subdivisions. Leo always had a knack for finding the hot market and taking full advantage of it. After starting Four Colonies he stayed in Lenexa and developed: Colony North, Colony Woods, Colony Hills and Colony Hills North. Leo then discovered southern Leawood and developed: Berkshire, Berkshire Villa’s and Wilshire. He became a development partner in the Cedar Creek Development. Leo took the reins of this 5,000-acre Olathe and it is now home to more than 1,200 families. He was a true leader and icon. ollowing executive orders announced in Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Mo., at the end of June, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly also announced that as of Friday, July 3, face masks were required in public spaces. “Under the order, most Kansans must wear masks in stores and shops, restaurants, and in any situation in which social distancing of 6 feet cannot be maintained, including outside.” The order lasts until rescinded or the expiration of the statewide State of Disaster Emergency, whichever comes first.

The Board of Johnson County Commissioners held a special meeting on July 2 to consider whether to approve Governor Kelly’s mask order. The seven-member board voted to support Gov. Kelly’s mask requirement in a 4-2 vote with one abstention. Similarly, Jackson County, Mo., announced orders requiring masks in public places, which started Wednesday, July 1. “All persons inside public buildings and in public outdoor settings must wear a face covering. This is in response to a continued increase of COVID-19 cases in Jackson County and the surrounding area,” according to the Jackson County Health Department’s Twitter feed. As of Thursday, July 2, North Kansas City, Mo., also required residents and visitors to wear face coverings. “All employees or visitors to any indoor public accommodation must wear face coverings or masks that cover the nose and mouth. These spaces include, but are not limited to, grocery and other retail stores, special events, and public transit,” the NKC city website states.

etro-wide single-family permits totaled 374 during May— leading to a five-month total of 2,076 units, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). This year-to-date total is an increase of 28 percent over the same period in 2019. The increase in building activity is spread throughout the eight-county metropolitan region, with the largest percentage increases in Cass and Wyandotte counties. Multi-family construction also showed growth, with 1,202 units permitted in the first five months of 2020, compared with 1,094 during the same period in 2019. In single-family activity, Kansas City, Mo., tops the “most active city” list with 348 permits issued (compared with 265 in 2019), followed by Olathe with 254, Belton at 172, Overland Park with 159, and Lee’s Summit with 151 permits. Builders report that their homes on the Parade of Homes (June 13-28) are drawing numerous potential buyers. With continuing low interest rates and decreasing inventories for both existing and new homes, pent up demand for housing has led to a very active buying season.
