PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Steve Hurst – Steve E. Hurst Construction WHERE DOES TIME GO? Have you ever wondered where all the time goes? It seems as though just yesterday I began my term as the President of our HBA. However, it has been nearly 334 days, 8016 hours or 480,960 minutes. They say time flies when you are having fun, and it sure has. Life is like a vapor, here today and gone tomorrow. As I reflect back on my tenure as President, I would like to say thanks to several people. First I would like to give thanks to God for His provision this year. He has taken care of me better than I could have ever taken care of myself. He provided work when there seemed to be none. Secondly, thanks to my wife Jessica for all of her support during this year, especially when my schedule took me away from our family time. She truly is a wonderful wife! I would like to thank my parents Ottis and Nellie Hurst for their correction and instruction through the years. Their love for God and people has led me to become the man I am today. Even though I didn’t have a choice in the matter of picking my parents, I couldn’t have done any better. Our HBA staff does an amazing job day in and day out. Jerry is a great leader and friend. His humility and guidance leads our organization throughout the year. HBAWS is fortunate to have you. Megan has helped me this year in more ways than I can remember, always keeping me on point. Beverly’s patience with me and the newsletters speaks for itself! Gisela always does a good job keeping up with the numbers. As individuals the HBAWS staff does a great job, but as a team they are incredible! My gratitude to the staff for all they do! The Men’s Bible Study has helped me more than words can express. Our Wednesdays in the Word has been the encouragement and support that has helped keep things in perspective this year. This group of men has reminded me that it is all about Him and nothing about me. Our heartfelt times of sharing and caring for one another will be something that will go with me for a lifetime. I am grateful to each HBAWS member. Together, we are an outstanding professional association. Thank you to our incoming president, Steve McSwain and the new leadership team! Your commitment and willingness to serve our HBA is much appreciated! I am confident you will all do a great job in 2012. During this Christmas season of hustle and bustle, the gift giving, and all the celebrations, I hope everyone takes time to reflect on the year and remember what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. It is the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. 3

What does sustainability, eco-friendly, green flooring mean? It’s the impact on the global environment inclusive of growing/harvesting methods, resource utilization, to the effect that our personal choices leave behind for our children. Whatever style you’re looking to create, there is a “green” choice, which doesn’t sacrifice durability, design, or dependability for the dollar spent. Let’s start with sustainability. Bamboo and cork are beautiful, durable, and easily replenished. Bamboo is fast growing and replenishes itself every five to seven years. It produces beautiful flooring with the natural look and durability of hardwood. It is also recyclable and biodegradable. Cork, grown in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean is harvested from the bark of cork oaks. The replacement of the bark begins immediately and continues for nine years until harvested again. Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated cork flooring into many of his designs. The air pocket construction provides “give” not provided by other flooring. It recovers from indentations left by furniture and is very comfortable when standing for a long period of time. It is hypoallergenic, resistant to mold and mildew, provides sound insulation and is available in a variety of colors and patterns. Carpet & Area Rugs made from wool are renewable, biodegradable natural fiber. Sisal, reed, coir, and sea grass are all similar flooring options made from nature. Hardwood floors are natural, green flooring option. Refinishing your existing wood floors is a sustainable action where your personal choice has a direct impact on the environment. Similarly, reclaimed wood, rescued and restored from old buildings or homes offer an environmentally responsible use. Laminate flooring can be a green, pet friendly option. It is created by laminating photographs of wood/stone to a wooden core. The core is recycled wood that would have otherwise gone to the landfill. It does not require toxic chemicals for cleaning. Linoleum is an all-natural flooring product made of renewable resources including linseed oil, rosin, cork dust, limestone, wood flour and mineral pigments that are pressed into a jute backing. It is extremely durable, water resistant, and has an extended life expectancy. Natural Stone comes from the earth and is inherently eco-friendly with a longer replacement life than most other surfaces. It is non-toxic, requires no chemicals during quarrying or fabrication, and void of any foreign substance that may be harmful to the earth. Nobody does it better than Mother Nature.

REMODELERS UPDATE Mike Scardina, President, NAHBR, HBAWS
Remodelers Christmas Social: Dec. 13 WFU Deacon Tower So much for 2011! This was a very fast year. I have enjoyed serving as President this year and would like to thank everyone that has helped me this year. In my opinion, 2011 showed much improvement in the overall business environment as compared to 2010 and I am confident this trend will continue. I would like to be the first to welcome Bob Vaughn as our new President for 2012 as well as all of our new officers. I hope everyone can attend our Christmas social on December 13. Please invite all of our wives and husbands, and significant others. We will have the musical entertainment of Mr. Sean Mettler as our guest. Sean is a fabulous guitarist and pianist and we will have a lot of fun to get the Christmas season started. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING Rosemary Howell, President
Since this is my last article as President, I wanted to recap what we’ve accomplished this year. Our projects this year have supported community projects from birth to death. From our “No Baby” Shower for SCAN (Welcome Baby), Second Harvest Food Bank, the Wanda and Lewis Wilson Scholarship Award, our support of the HBA Wine Raffle (proceeds going to the Jimmy Johnson Voc Ed Fund, Build Pac, The Shepherds Center, Habitat Restore, collecting gifts for SCAN and our donation to Hospice in memory of Darlene Good, we have had an impact on lives from birth to death. I’m proud of what this small group of women have accomplished given the economic impact to the housing industry which we are all affiliated.

BUILDING PROFESSIONALS SPIKE UPDATE
NEXT SPIKE CLUB MEETING: Dec. 7 11:30 am, HBA
Rick Busch, Spike Committee Chairman
RSVP: Megan Parks 336-768-5942
“Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you and in the end you are sure to succeed.” -Abraham Lincoln
Great advice, and most assuredly appropriate for our industry. If you would like to feel encouragement, take one lunch time out of your busy month and join us at a SPIKE meeting. Lunch is free, and you get the opportunity to talk with other association members about retention and recruitment in our local Home Builders Association. This is a positive environment where we are constantly being updated on what’s going on in our marketplace. My good friend Bryan Daniel of Bridges Wealth Management recently mentioned to me that his perception of our committee was one of hard recruitment. I assured him, and I assure you, nothing could be farther from the truth. This group is committed to finding ways to keep our membership engaged, and helping members find ways to benefit from their membership. It’s the ultimate low key committee assignment. We are actively seeking new members to the Spike committee, so take a look at your calendar and give Megan Parks a call to RSVP for our next Wed. meeting. Lunch is free, and the information you get from one of these meetings is invaluable. If you aren’t sure what a “Spike” does, I’m happy to meet you at the association office for a cup of coffee and fill you in on one of the best Home Builders Association committees. Just give me a call at 760-1516 and we’ll set it up. Rick Busch, of Busch Insurance Services, Inc. works with all types of construction professionals, offering liability, workers compensation, builders risk, business auto and property insurance solutions. A member of the WS HBA since 1988, Rick currently serves on the Spike Committee and the Associate Member Committee.
