HBAWS Member News September 2012
Paul Williams, Ready for the RV-Low Country Boil Build-PAC Raffle ticket sales were a hot commodity in August as we sold nearly $750 worth. The lucky winner was drawn the day after the recent Membership Social at Ferguson’s. Paul Williams’ ticket stub was drawn and he was ready to schedule the McSwain RV Cooking Road Show. Thank you to everyone that did purchase tickets to support this important NCHBA committee, NC BUILD-PAC. The Political Action Committee of the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NC BUILDPAC) is a non-partisan committee organized for the specific purpose of raising funds to support prohousing candidates of all parties at the state and local levels of government. We have raised $1,900 or 43% of our association’s goal so far in 2012. Personal pledges can still be made by going to our web site under the Membership Services tab to click on Build-PAC. Contributions to NC BUILD-PAC are an investment in the future of your business and the home building industry as a whole. It is essential that we are able to support the candidates that understand and will fight for the issues important to us when they are in office.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Steve McSwain – Maplestone Construction Fall Selling Season Many of us are working on existing business that needs to be completed before the holidays, while others are frantically finishing up homes for the Fall Parade of Homes. The fall selling season is upon us and just over the horizon is winter, where life and business traditionally slow down. In addition to the current busy season and the upcoming holidays, we have the national election this November. Since election years have typically caused some potential clients to be paralyzed with analysis, make sure your staff, salespeople, service technicians and you are closing business now, while planting seeds for 2013’s selling season. One of the biggest resources we have is our people and relationships. We have talked in the past about partnerships, passing along referrals, sharing information and leveraging our relationships - be sure to tap into each of these areas as we move into the fall season. Our Association has many great and fun networking events planned the remainder of the year, so please plan to attend as many as you can. Our last monthly meeting was held at Ferguson in their Winston Salem showroom, which was well attended by our members. The food was awesome and the conversation wonderful. I really like this kind of informal format because it allows our members to really talk and network while helping a member exhibit their people, products and services. Ferguson has a great facility and wonderful staff. Thanks to Ferguson for being a terrific host. If you have an interest in hosting a meeting please let us know. Our association kicked off the Triad Home and Garden Show last Friday with the booth lottery. We had about fifteen members attend and another ten fax in their booth selections. We have 45 out of 185 booths confirmed for next year! This show is in late February for three days. As a past participant for the last five years and again next year I can tell you it is a great event for our members. It is time consuming to get a booth together, but for the investment you will not find a better venue to promote your business to thousands
of current and potential home owners. Every year I gain many new clients from this show alone and walk away with booked business. The best time to reserve and select a booth is now while there are options. Thanks to our members and our staff, this year’s Fall Parade of Homes looks to be very busy and a great time to sell to the many people the event draws in year after year. If you are an associate member who has partnered with a builder member on a Parade house I urge you to roll up your sleeves to help the builder sell while marketing yourself. To the builders, I urge you to promote the associates that helped you to your client base and new customers. I have already had friends and family ask me when the event starts this year. Every year my wife and I make the rounds to all the Parade homes. I get new ideas, see something new and event an old product reinvented. But most of all I walk away inspire, which I think is the way all the attendees feel. Remember we have the Golden Home Awards Celebration on October 16, which is a terrific opportunity to network and get to know other members. To give you an example of what a resource of people and ideas we have within our association the staff came up with a raffle idea to raise money for BuildPac. The idea was the McSwain RV Cooking Road Show. The prize is a low country boil lunch for ten guests at the winner’s place of choosing. The meal will be cooked by me and served by our staff. We will arrive on site in a large RV. I think it will be a blast. We collected $750 for Build-Pac. I want to congratulate Paul Williams for his winning ticket! We are looking forward to serving you and your guests. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. There will be next year. Remember to come participate in our upcoming events and also that our Association is here to support and help promote our members and their businesses. As always please do business with a member. 3

Comfort, Affordability Come Standard with a Natural Gas Home Comfort, Affordability Come Standard with a Natural Gas Home Looking for an easy way to differentiate your product and attract value- and performance-minded customers? Provide homeowners the comfort they want and the reliability and efficiency their lifestyle requires by including natural gas equipment and appliances. Not only that, natural gas will lower your customers’ energy bills, saving them money. Comfort Natural gas furnaces produce heat 25 degrees warmer than air from an electric heat pump, so not only does a natural gas home feel warmer, it warms up more quickly and requires less energy! The same holds true for water heating; natural gas water heaters heat water twice as fast as electric water heaters. Being able to run the dishwasher, wash clothes and take a nice, hot shower without running out of hot water makes the day a little less hectic – all thanks to natural gas. Affordability What could you do with an extra $500 a year? Natural gas water heaters can save the average homeowner in North Carolina $293 a year on energy bills when compared to an electric water heater. Home heating with natural gas saves $229 a year compared to an electric heat pump. Your customers could use that extra money to take a three-day weekend to the beach, buy some new outfits or start a college fund for the kids. This cost advantage is here to stay, thanks to a 100-year domestic supply that is keeping natural gas prices stable and affordable. Reliability Many natural gas water heaters and ranges will keep working when the electricity goes out, so your homebuyers still can cook meals or take a hot shower. In the event of an ice storm, natural gas logs make a great backup heat source, keeping your Aand Swarm. S O C I AT E G homebuyers safe 6
Natural gas appliances, such as clothes dryers, furnaces and water heaters, also contain fewer moving parts than electric models, adding years to the life of the appliance and goodwill to your relationship with the homebuyer. Efficiency Not only does natural gas heat water faster and warm a home more quickly, it does all of this while reducing the home’s carbon footprint! For example, a homeowner in the Triad can reduce their home’s carbon emissions by up to 57 percent just by choosing a standard natural gas water heater instead of a comparable electric unit. According to the EPA1, that’s equivalent to planting 31 pine trees a year! Outdoor Living The benefits of natural gas extend beyond a home’s walls. Your homebuyer’s backyard will be the envy of all their friends thanks to an outdoor natural gas fireplace. Or make leaving a backyard barbecue to refill a propane tank a thing of the past with a natural gas grill! To learn more about the benefits of natural gas or to inquire about getting natural gas service to your next build, call 1-877-279-3636 or visit www.piedmontng. com. PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING June DeLugas, President
Our appreciation to Missy Easter for hosting our August PWB meeting. August is Build PAC month, so each member donated $20 to Build PAC. All attendees at our meeting received 20 tokens to play blackjack, with the opportunity to win one of two great prizes donated by Wilson Lighting. Our guest speaker, Steve McSwain, president of HBAWS, explained the importance of Build PAC with regards to legislative issues that affect the building industry. As luck would have it, Steve (the only guy at the meeting) won first prize at the blackjack table. September’s meeting will be held the second Tuesday, September 11th, at June DeLugas Interiors, 2575 Old Glory Road, Clemmons, (336) 778-l030. Each member is asked to bring several canned food items for the Food Pantry. Email giselal@hbaws.org or june@junedelugasinteriors.com for questions.

REMODELERS UPDATE Bob Vaughn, President, NAHBR, HBAWS The right service can save money. Everyone wants more sales, and too often price is the only tool that suppliers and builders focus on. As a supplier to the remodeling community, there are services that you can provide that can save them money. • Visit jobsites and ask remodelers about their needs. Offer to join them at client meetings to help explain specific products. Done properly, this can go a long way to making a favorable impression of the homeowner. • Attend their meetings or bring in manufacturers reps to educate their crew about products; remodelers appreciate on-site services; don’t forget the doughnuts! • Review plans and offer suggestions for creating and placing orders accurately and efficiently. • Make timely deliveries and have smaller equipment available to navigate tight jobsites and not block crews and neighbors • Sort and examine products for flaws before delivery to avoid returns. • Offer to pre-order materials if a price increase is expected, and offer to store the materials if your cash flow can handle it. And of course, stand behind any products you sell and help to fix problems that arise.
