PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shane Wagoner – Wagoner Homes, Inc.
Professional Women in Building - Making a Difference Every Sunday evening, my wife and I spend about 15 minutes reviewing the schedule for the upcoming week. This time of year, we’re figuring out which one of us will shuttle the kids to and from softball and baseball practice in between our work schedules, her travel, and my evening meetings. One Sunday last month, this planning meeting went a little awry. I told her I had an HBA meeting one night that week. She asked what it was about. Not really thinking about the repercussions, I told her I was meeting with a small group of women that I didn’t really know that well, having some wine, and I wasn’t sure what time I’d be home. Needless to say, that didn’t go over well. So, my 15 minute planning meeting just turned into a major discussion. I explained that I was meeting with the Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) because I wanted to know more about this special group of women. I thought it would be a good idea to sit in on a meeting to learn who they are, what they do and to hear their plans for the future as Professional Women in the Building Industry. After hearing my story, my wife agreed. However, she still wasn’t thrilled that I was going, while she stayed home with 3 kids for the evening! As an affiliate organization of the HBA, the PWB represents our association in a way that is noble and charitable. They are a spirited group of dedicated women who are actively involved in all aspects of the building community, but also have a passion for giving back to their community. Every month, they meet and discuss ways they can help raise money and/ or provide support for community causes. Each year they raise money to provide scholarships for students
in the vocational education programs at WinstonSalem Forsyth County School Career Center and Forsyth Technical Community College. In past years, they have also donated funds to the Samaritan’s Purse Penny Campaign, Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN), and Habitat for Humanity. At the meeting I attended, these women were organizing a charitable event to raise money for the local battered women’s shelter through a shoe drive. You may have noticed their collection box in the lobby at HBAWS. The gently used shoes are collected and processed through a marketing company who buys the used shoes and distributes them in Third World countries. The proceeds from the sale of the shoes will be given to the shelter. As is the tradition in Spring, time to clean out the closets and bring in your gently used shoes to help PWB provide financial assistance to the Battered Women’s Shelter. This shelter provides assistance to women and children in our community who have recently found the courage to leave abusive relationships and are trying to get back on their feet again. The Spring Parade of Homes dates are as follows: April 27 & 28 and May 4 & 5. Save the date on your calendars for the Spring Parade Breakfast – Thursday, May 2, 8:30 – 10:30am at The Lake at Lissara Spring Association House (see details on page 8). A big thank you to our exclusive event sponsor for the Spring Parade - Piedmont Federal Savings Bank! Plan to visit some of the beautiful homes entered in this year’s parade by our local builders and developers, showcasing products and services from many of our HBA associate members. Landscaping-Luxury or Investment? Are you thinking about adding to or improving your home’s landscaping? Here are a few numbers to factor into your decision. A great landscape looks good, but did you know that great landscaping can add up to 14% to home’s value?1 When on the market, a well-landscaped home sells on average 6 weeks faster than a poorlyor non-landscaped home.2 And in a neighborhood of similarly valued homes, having “good” landscaping (as judged by a local landscape professional) added 4-5 % to home’s value in comparison to surrounding homes, while “excellent” landscaping added 6-7%. Conversely, poor landscaping can reduce a home’s value by as much as 10% in comparison to surrounding homes.3
Putting 5% of the value of your home into a beautiful, functional landscape could pay off with a 15% increase in home value-a 150% increase in your investment. It improves quality of life and reduces energy use. Does landscaping sound like just a luxury now? 1 Associated Landscape Contractors of America, 2 Associated Landscape Contractors of America, 3 Journal of Environmental Horticulture, 4 Smart Money, 5 U.S. Department of Energy, 6 U.S. Department of Energy
Before
Even smaller landscaping projects can pay off. A survey in Canada found that hedges raised property values by 3.6%, and landscaping along the street increased value by 4.4%. Bigger projects have even greater returns- a landscaped patio can increase your home’s value by 12.4%.4 Quality landscaping doesn’t just pay off when you sell your home, either. Properly placed landscape plants can reduce a home’s energy costs by up to 25%.5 A tree shading an outdoor AC unit can increase efficiency by up to 10%.6 And the presence of trees and other greenery can lessen the effects of solar radiation on the surrounding area, keeping you more comfortable in summer. Trees and shrubs also dampen sound waves, lessening noise pollution.
After
How about more living space? By creating outdoor cooking, dining or relaxation areas you have more optional living area than is contained in your house alone. Making your home more useable and enjoyable is a big benefit. 5
PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING Our March meeting was located at the HBAWS where as always it was a very informative evening. One of our members, Cathy Marks, Powerhouse Cleaners was the speaker. She spoke about gathering used shoes to donate to Third World countries and the proceeds from the collection would go to the Battered Women’s Shelter. After Cathy’s sharing, the Professional Women in Building agreed to collect gently used shoes until the end of May. We are asking for shoe donations from Home Builders members, as well as our community. A large box has been placed in the HBA lobby - please drop-off your shoes there. If you would like to place a box at your office we have informational flyers/boxes available! Simply contact Tracy@ SolarRealty.net. If you do place a box at your office please let us know (Tracy or Gisela). We will send out an email to the all members of HBAWS informing them of drop-off locations. Thank you for your support of this great cause in advance. For more information - http://buyingusedshoes.com. SPIKE UPDATE “Trust” is the new currency in 2013. So many consumers got burnt over the past 5 years that confidence rests in how much they trust you before they will buy from you. Credibility rankings dropped in most industries and we have work to do to recover. We must begin to answer the question, “Why” for the consumer first. If we continue to answer the “What” with description of our product and service without first understanding why they might want it…we are not gaining trust. You must engage with your customer and find out their needs and motivation and “How” you can meet those before you showcase your product. In my humble opinion, it is time to go “old school”. Remember the time when you had face to face conversations and received hand written thank you’s? Now mind you, I love my technology and gadgets but I feel we are missing our opportunity to build credibility and trust by avoiding active communication and listening. In 2013, Coldwell Banker will focus it’s marketing campaigns on “We Believe” we can answer your “Why’s” with strong communication, professionalism, knowledge and expertise. Let’s all make it a priority to build our trust currency!
