PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shane Wagoner – Wagoner Homes, Inc.
The Right Path My wife had to go to Texas last month for work, which means I was a single parent of three kids for four days. She used to hate traveling for business, but now I think she views it as a vacation of sorts. She knows her trips remind me of how much I take her for granted! So she texted me two quotes after she left that said: “That which is easy is seldom right. That which is right is seldom easy.”
“The wife is right 99.9% of the time.”
I’m not sure who said the first one, but I’m pretty sure she made up the latter! I guess this means that if I am wrong 99.9% of the time, then I am not competent enough to do anything. Therefore, she has to do everything while I do nothing. All joking aside, the first quote made me stop and think about what we have all been through the last four years. We are constantly presented with new challenges and are having to adapt to new things. Now that August is here, interest rates are threatening to rise, and I ask myself that familiar question, Is it time to pull back or keep pushing forward? I want to do the right thing and hope that success will be waiting in the end. So I ask, what does “right” mean anymore? My conclusion is that it is seldom easy to understand! As to our Association, when I look back at what I did during those first few years after I joined, it’s clear to me now how complacent I was. Not intentionally, of course. But, it was the easy thing to do. The right thing to do would have been to pay attention more, get involved a little more, voice my opinion a little more. That wasn’t so easy because it meant I needed to think more, spend more time, add another thing to my list. It’s easy for me to see this now that I’m in a leadership role. I encourage each of you to do what is right, not what is easy. Get more involved. Join a committee. It takes effort and time but that is how you meet new people, form new relationships, and ultimately strengthen our industry. Some potential opportunities to get involved are the upcoming CE Blitz on August 7 at Piedmont Natural Gas and the Fall Parade of Homes. Registration is open for both: http://www.hbaws.net Thanks for all that you do for the HBA!

Thermostat Fan Setting: Auto vs. On - Which is the best option??? Opinions, as they say, can vary from one person to the next. You can make a case in any situation that option 1 is better than option 2. In the world of HVAC, there are many things that could fall in this category. Let’s discuss one of the more frequent questions we see: Fan setting on thermostats. Most thermostats will give you the following options: On, Auto, and Continuous or Circulate. The default option is “auto”. This will have the indoor fan come on when the system calls for heating or cooling. You will notice air movement as you hear the ac or heat pump unit humming outside. The “on” setting runs the indoor fan 24/7. It will blow air throughout the house whether it is calling for anything based on temperature. This is a good option to keep air filtered constantly, as it passes through the filter while it is running, and overcoming hot spots or cold spots in the house by moving air to and from the home. By filtering the air constantly, whether just a media filter or if a UV light system is incorporated, you can keep the air in the home cleaner and provide a better indoor environment.
the cooling cycle and more uniform comfort throughout the home. Some manufacturers will not recommend you run the fan constantly during the summer cooling season. Part of the air conditioning cycle is dehumidification. As air passes through the coil and cools, water is removed from the air and drains out. As the system satisfies and shuts off the outdoor condensing unit, running the fan will allow air to continue to pass through the air handler and through the coil and drain pan area where water is collected and is being removed. That could allow some of the water just removed from the house, to be reintroduced into the air. Running the fan in auto mode during the summer is probably your best option.
Continuous or Circulate, is an option on some systems and thermostats where you have a variable speed fan as the blower. This fan does not blow at one constant speed, but speeds up and slows down as the system calls. The circulate option blows at a reduced speed at different intervals when the system is not cooling or heating, so the air is not as forceful, but still gives you the benefits, and does not cost much more than a 35-watt light bulb. The speed variation allows for higher efficiency, greater dehumidification in 11
