PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Twas the night before Christmas (HBA Style)

Shane Wagoner, Wagoner Homes, Inc. ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all thro’ the house, All the builders were working, even the dang mouse; The rock was stacked on the chimney with care, In hopes that a contract soon would be there; While builders gathered at a social of past, Living it up, carefree, and drinking fast; With politicians in their suits, and builders in their caps, Little did we know we were in for a long nap. When out of the blue arose such a clatter, Down came our industry, it just fell off the ladder! Away everyone ran, some with hammer in hand, Leaving homes in despair, even unsightly land. Everybody was angry because things had become slow. What are we to do? Where did everyone go? When what to my eyes appeared through the years, My fellow HBA members, humbled and unclear. As we continued to meet, reach out and greet, We felt like we were stuck, stuck in concrete. But since that nasty day in late 2008, We tried to push forward and spread cheer, not hate. Now plumber, now painter, now mechanical technician, On roofer, on mason, on your way electrician, To the top of the roof, to the top of the wall, Get back to work, even though Washington is still flawed! As bankers and lenders hid in their holes, Out came the builders, ready to whack-a-mole! And then one day, as if Santa came to my home, The banks gave in and said, “Let’s try this one loan.” So up from the ground the builders slowly bound,

Cautiously optimistic of the next corner, what’s around? And then with a peek, I saw in the future, Another 4 years with Washington in a stupor. I threw up my hands and said “I just want to give up, I fear my next opportunity is just bad luck.” And then with a twinkling, I heard a member say, “I joined this association to get on the opportunity sleigh!” As I threw my head around with a look of confusion, I saw something special, it wasn’t an illusion. Sweat rolled off her brow as she was in a chipper mood, “I clean 3 of these big houses to renew my HBA dues!” Her eyes—how they twinkled! Her dimples how merry! Her cheeks looked cold, and her nose like a cherry! She smiled and said, “How fortunate I am,” I am a member of something bigger and it believes I can.” I spoke not a word, but went straight to work, Understanding that all members to a degree have been hurt. But with an attitude such as hers, I learned something sweet, The HBA can help us all get back on our feet. So, as a new year approaches, let’s give the team a whistle, And help each other fly, like the down of a thistle. As my term winds down, I pray with all my might, Success to you all, and to all a good night! Thank you for allowing me to serve as the 2013 HBAWS President. While there were ups and downs, it was an honor to represent such hard-working, dedicated individuals. Thanks to each of you who gave your time, energy and support.

REMODELERS UPDATE I’m sure you are just like me, realizing it is December and wondering, “where did this year go?” It has been a busy one for our business and family, and no doubt for yours, too. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as Remodelers Council president, and as this year closes I’d like to express my appreciation for the support of everyone in the HBA-WS office, and among the Remodelers Council membership. Hopefully the various programs have helped you with additional insight to somehow improve you and your remodeling or associated business. Along with the programs, the opportunity to get together to network and discuss industry issues, concerns, and opportunities has its own value which cannot be matched in any other group. True, in this group we are competitors, but as a group we are also competitors against the less professional in our industry. Educating the public on the benefits of contracting with a true professional remodeler should be a priority for each of us, and especially so for our Remodelers Council.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS COMMITTEE GUEST COLUMNIST - Steve Hornaday

More Than Brick and Block In the short time I have represented General Shale in the Triad area, I’ve noticed that when most people hear the words ‘General Shale’, their response is usually “Oh, yeah, the brick and block company.” While we are very proud of being a leading masonry supplier in this region, I can’t help but think we are so much more than a brick and block distributor. In addition to brick, block and mortar, General Shale has expanded its’ product line to include many new items and we are adding new product lines, constantly. Our parent company, Wienerberger, Inc., from Austria, has encouraged diversity in the lines of building products we provide and as their North American arm, General Shale has enthusiastically jumped on board. As the local supplier to the Triad, we hope that the building public will come to know General Shale as the supplier of numerous products. One of the first items beyond brick and block that we introduce was segmental retaining walls. As a dealer for the ‘Versa-Lok’ retaining wall system, we carry a number of sizes and designs that can accommodate almost any wall design. The ‘Versa-Lok’ system uses interlocking wall blocks with metal rods to support and hold the block in place. Along with the tapered block shapes, this rod system is manufactured for flexibility in designing a wall that will allow for curves in the wall face, as well as changes in the elevation of the base, without compromising the integrity of the wall. Additionally, the various sizes of the block available allow for numerous design options that can give each wall a unique and individual appearance. An obvious offshoot of the wall system was the development of our concrete pavers. Our weathered pavers are produced in a variety of sizes and colors to offer a wide palette of designs that can complement any architectural look that the builder or homeowner is seeking. They produce a classic ‘aged’ look to any flat surface that can pair seamlessly with new construction or existing structures. The varying sizes and patterns available are the perfect complement to our line of clay (brick) pavers. With the multiple colors of clay pavers available, along with the weathered concrete pavers, we can provide pavement options that allow for any walkway, driveway, or patio to be customized to the customer’s wishes. When used singularly, or with each other, there is no limit to the looks that be achieved with these pavers. Another newer branch of our business is our building stone veneers. Whether used as an accent product with our brick, or on its own, offer distinctive looks in a wide variety of styles and colors. The natural stone items, as well as our new ‘Sand Mountain Stone’ cultured stone products, come in either a ‘ledge’, or stacked design, or in an ‘ashlar’ pattern to give an upgraded, sophisticated appearance to any structure. The wide range of available colors we offer allow for design

options that can match well with any brick choice or provide attractive wall options on their own, with any wall choices. Probably, the most popular line of products we now have are our Outdoor Living items. Whether one is looking for a fireplace, water feature, fire pit, mailbox column, garden bench, or outdoor bar to enhance any patio outdoor living space, these doit-yourself kits produce items that are interchangeable and will beautify any location and create a comfortable outdoor arena. Produced and constructed from our landscaping-style stones, any of these items will improve the ‘liveabilty’ of any outdoor space and are durable enough to last for decades. Adding a custom grill or smoker to your outdoor living area will only expand the hours of enjoyment you can derive from such a space. And if inclement weather or excessive sun create limitations in utilizing your outdoor space, we even sell pergolas, with slatted roofs that can be opened or closed to provide further comfort to the countless hours you may enjoy your outdoor lifestyle. Finally, our newest product line is our Thin Brick and Thin Rock line of veneers that can be used for interior or exterior walls, ceilings, floors, or fireplaces to accent any surrounding décor. Create a kitchen backsplash, spruce up a ceiling’s appearance, or just veneer a fireplace and/or hearth to bring a natural look to any surface or to just add life to an otherwise monotonous environment. The 3/8” brick and rock veneers can be installed on cement board with a thin mortar coat and, when installed properly, come with a 20-year warranty against moisture leakage or penetration. There are 12 standard colors in brick and 6 varieties of rock in stock, but any color or style of brick that we produce and be custom-cut for Thin Brick use. Whether used in interior or exterior applications, the owner will enjoy years of comfort, as well as having a unique and beautiful appearance to any wall or structure. As mentioned earlier, these are just a few of the items that General Shale now offers, besides the brick, block and mortar lines we have always been known for. When you toss in landscaping lighting, sitting walls for gardens or patios, landscape stepping stones, address bricks, and countless other building related products, we hope you’ll see that we are more than just a brick and block supplier. We believe we have just about anything to naturally enhance and beautify your home and its’ surroundings. So whether you are building your dream home or just sprucing up your existing surroundings, please visit with your local General Shale representative or, better yet, come by our showroom at 1060-A Hwy 66 S in Kernersville to see the myriad products we have for builders and homeowners. We think you will be pleasantly surprised to discover that we supply so many products that will upgrade and provide enhance value and beauty to any home for years and years to come. And, oh yeah, we still have a lot of brick and block available, as well. 5

SPIKE UPDATE Spike Appreciation Month

Jerry Cowan: All Time Big Spike, NCHBA Monday Briefing

There are approximately 350 members of NAHB’s Spike Club who have reached the level of Statesman Spike by earning 500 Spike Credits during their time as members. Less than 60 have reached the level of Grand Spike with more than 1000 Spike Credits and fewer than 20 are All Time Big Spikes with an amazing 1500 or more Spike Credits. Jerry Cowan, of Greensboro, N.C., is one of the few who has reached this lofty level of success and he has managed to do it in only 15 years as a member.

Jodi Tate, Spike Committee Chairman

Since first becoming a member in 1998, Cowan has worked tirelessly as a recruiter for local associations in North Carolina and beyond. A Senior Territory Manager for Builders Mutual Insurance, Cowan makes a pitch for membership to every potential client and encourages his co- workers to become members as well. He says, “I’m motivated by the competition – the first time I saw a list of the association’s Top 10 Spikes on the wall of my HBA’s offices, I knew I wanted to be on that list. I worked hard to recruit new members and achieved that goal. When I found out about the national NAHB Spike Wall of Fame, I made that my next goal

To join Professional Women in Building contact Gisela: Giselal@hbaws.org or Tracy at Tracy@SolarRealty.Net. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!!!!! GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE Zach DeWaters, Government Affairs Director zach@hbaws.org, 336.464.8003

2014 Legislative Priority Development Underway As newly elected officials are sworn into office in the area, the Partners in Housing Joint Legislative Committee (JLC) and government affairs staff is hard at work meeting with these new decision makers to enhance the association’s legislative priorities. This December, the JLC, which consists of nine members from the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem and nine members from the Winston-Salem Regional Association of REALTORS ®, will meet to review current efforts and build the 2014 legislative program. The new agenda will lay out the activities and priorities for the upcoming year with the primary goal of developing a proactive, member-driven, measurable program that will show results. However, such a small group cannot tackle such an important task alone. Working to address matters that stand to impact our industry and influencing the outcome of specific policy issues like ordinances, regulations and fees, requires the involvement and collaboration of a broad cross section of our memberships, as well as individuals and organizations outside our organizations seeking similar positive outcomes. Whether its issues regarding transportation, infrastructure, land use, environmental issues, economic development or a host of other issues, each of our businesses has much to lose – or gain. Your input and involvement in the development of our program is instrumental not only for the association’s legislative success, but to ensure your voice and your business is represented and heard before government officials. We need to hear from you directly about what issues are impacting your business locally. The JLC meets on a regular basis once a month and guests are encouraged to attend. For more information about upcoming meetings contact Zach DeWaters at zach@hbaws.org or zach@ wsrar.com.
