PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shane Wagoner – Wagoner Homes, Inc.

The Stranger Scott was own his way back from the store one day when he got to the bottom of his driveway and his battery died. The sky was turning dark and he could hear the thunder of an approaching storm. Scott wasn’t in a car or truck, he was in his wheelchair that he controls with a joystick. He couldn’t just walk up his driveway because he is a quadriplegic. It was the battery of his wheelchair that died. He was alone with no way to get home.

I know Scott well—he oversees the IT department at Hubbard Realty. I thought I was fairly tech savvy until I met him--he is an absolute computer guru that can do anything with a computer! He still relies on others, like his “family” at Hubbard Realty, to help him out from time to time. Sometimes, I’ll rinse out his coffee cup or help him with his lunch. But, I am proud to do it, as I learn something new from him often, and it’s not all computer related. I feel privileged to work with him.

Before the storm hit, “the stranger” drove by. She saw something wasn’t right, so she pulled over and asked what was wrong. Most people would have never stopped to ask. Scott explained and with the leg power behind his chair, the stranger pushed him into his house, made sure he had what he needed, and left.

Scott wasn’t born a quadriplegic. He had a lifechanging event when he was 18 years old, forcing him to adapt. He used his mind, a determined heart, and a glove strapped to his hand to hold a pencil so he can press computer keys. He has overcome one of the most challenging hurdles of life. Equally important, he didn’t let his pride stand in the way—he accepted help from others when it was offered, whether he knew them or not.

During this time, Scott had been looking for a job and floating resumes. An individual that received his resume was so impressed that she took it with her when she found a new position, coincidentally, working for “the stranger”. When she found out “the stranger” was interested in hiring an Information Technology person, she shared Scott’s resume. Scott interviewed with “the stranger” that had helped him up his driveway, who ultimately offered him the job. After years of schooling, a MBA from Wake Forest University and 2 years of job searching, it finally happened. Despite his handicap, he had found an opportunity.

As an association, we continue to rely on each other in an ever-changing industry. Our association is full of people that can change your business or your life. The more involved you are, the better your chances are of meeting the stranger that can provide an opportunity for you. Or, maybe you can be the stranger that can offer help? It may not seem life-changing at the time, but you never know how far one good deed can reach. Extend your hand to a stranger at our next social event or HBAWS meeting and let’s see what happens!

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS COMMITTEE GUEST COLUMNIST - June DeLugas

For years, interior designers and innovative home builders have embraced new and earthfriendly building materials, and successfully incorporated them into many of their projects. The willingness to try something new sets us apart from competitors at a time when the market demands our best. Home buyers not only want quality, they want quality with a conscience. They want to feel good about buying something that makes the world better for generations to come. I was amazed as I read a recent article about self-healing building materials that can stand up to earthquakes and floods. Concrete can have bacteria added to it, so that when cracks occur in the concrete, the bacteria activates and creates its own calcium carbonate substance that fills in the cracks. Polymers are already on the market that self-heal with resin pellets, and liquid granite has a huge range of uses. The internet makes it easier for our clients to become informed, and we must keep our knowledge base up to date.

The designs I complete for my clients include several eco-friendly elements, ranging from the use of an heirloom antique, furniture created using reclaimed or FSC-certified wood, art pieces created from shipping palettes and packing materials, locally-made furniture, and fabrics made from recycled materials. Products are developing and improving at a rate that makes it difficult to stay informed. This exciting time in our industry provides the perfect opportunity for designers and builders to work together to educate ourselves and our customers while growing our businesses. Each month, the AMC holds a meeting to help educate participants while networking. Last month, we met at Erik Anderson’s office and shared a wealth of knowledge about remodeling. This month, the group will congregate at June DeLugas Interiors in Clemmons for an informative session. If you are interested in attending, please contact me at www.junedelugasinteriors.com or call our retail store and design center at 336-7781030.

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN IN BUILDING Our May meeting was supposed to be working the concession stand at the Winston Salem Dash game. However, the game got rained out. We were able to move the location to a nearby spot and still have a great time. Even spouses were able to come and enjoy our fun and lively group. The proceeds from the concession stand were to go to the Ronald McDonald House. Even though the game got rained out we were still able to buy t-shirts and donate that way. In the June meeting we will be discussing rescheduling another time or donating a monetary fee. Our June meeting will be held at Wanda Wilson’s home to gather and organize the shoes we have been collecting for 3rd World countries and to see how much money we have raised for the Battered Women’s Shelter Thank you again for helping us with this great cause.

Donations Needed! Furniture, appliances, building materials, etc. help drive ReStore operations allowing them to build homes for more hard-working families in Forsyth County. Jodi Tate, Spike Committee Chairman

SPIKE UPDATE The Art of Involvement In this fast paced industry and world we live in where instant gratification is expected, getting involved can seem tiresome and overwhelming. We need to shift our mindset to embrace the intrinsic value of being a part of something bigger than ourselves. Our willingness to stretch ourselves, learn new things, meet new people, and volunteer for a greater cause is the core of what keeps us connected. There is a book titled, “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazi that I submit everyone should read. It not only illustrates why and how connecting is critical but how to do it. Ferrazi lays out simple steps to connect your way to success and a satisfying life. It is about generosity and sincerity. Connect without motive and give back without expectation.” Invisibility is worse than failure.” Let me use HBAWS as an example. I was asked to chair the SPIKE committee this year and although I have plenty on my plate, I wanted to stretch myself. My commitment to the Association and it’s members has offered me opportunities to connect with new people and give something of value back. It makes me feel good inside. If I can share with others and it inspires or makes a small difference then I have been successful. I know it can be intimidating to come into a room of strangers, but remember we all want to belong. Walk up to someone and offer your hand. I bet you will make a new connection you will enjoy. Get involved. Be a student of your industry and continue to learn, connect, and share your unique talents and gifts.

I am personally inviting you to our August SPIKE meeting on Wednesday August 7 at 11:45am at the Association office. Come and Connect!
