April 9, 10 - Area high school students visited the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds in W-S to take self-guided tours exporing technical careers. Industry / College Community were well-represented at the event. Students experienced introduction to heavy equipment, and industry leaders shared at mini-speaker sessions during the two-day event. NCHBA worked with the HBAWS to stage a House Plan Activity contest with prizes (50+ students participated).

The Seasonal Change As one season comes to an end, and a new one begins, we find ourselves on a journey to what is looking to be a good Spring. We begin to feel a sense of renewed energy as nature comes back to life.

Home prices are slowly inching up and buyers continue to enjoy the low interest rates, all of which is positive for our industry. Major employers of the area are expanding. For example, the new Novant Hospital just opened in Clemmons and Wake Forest Baptist Health continues work on the new facility in Advance. All of this means economic growth for our area, as workers will migrate to these new jobs.

As I look at each member of our association, I see a diverse group of people that has been working hard to adapt, maintain, and sometimes, even re-organize and re-prioritize, as we’ve waited for this shift to happen.

We’ve made it through the toughest economic times that our generation has ever faced. We have bumps and bruises to prove it, but continue to put one foot in front of the other to keep doing what we love.

This past week, I was reminded that we aren’t doing this in a bubble. Others (i.e. our kids) are watching us as we find our way. Many of you know I have 3 kids: Emily, 11; Graham, 7; and Madison 2. Graham has been participating in the Lego Club after school, where each week kids build things out of Legos. Some are recognized for their team work, creativity, and listening skills. During the final week of Lego Club, Graham was selected as “Builder of the Week.” This may seem trivial to many of you, but to Graham, and I must admit, to me and my wife, it was a big deal (mainly due to the listening skills requirement).

At any rate, we celebrated with ice cream sundaes after dinner, and during our celebration he told me that one day, he and I would build houses together. As a father, I felt proud. He recognizes the work that I’m doing and hopefully, I’ll have something to pass onto him. But, for a moment, I thought about the risk he would assume and wanted to protect him from the uncertainty that comes with our industry. I quickly realized there is risk and uncertainty in any profession and the construction industry has many rewards to those who wish to ride her waves.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to Piedmont Federal Savings Bank, this year’s Spring Parade premier sponsor, who generously supported our efforts. The Parade boosts interest of local buyers and gets them in front of our member’s products. I hope you were able to take advantage of this opportunity. REMODELERS UPDATE At the April Remodelers meeting we began discussing a project involving renovations to a veteran’s home. We will continue those discussions at our May meeting. Also, Dan Dockery from the Forsyth County Inspections Dept. will be presenting an update on building codes from 5-6 PM and will continue that presentation after dinner from 7-8 PM. This presentation will apply to HBA-WS continuing education requirements.

In our industry, our HBA members have many great opportunities to work on some really fun projects.

For Tracy and I, it seems no project is ever the same. This is the nature of the renovation industry.

Every problem or project is vastly different from any previous projects.

We do lots of kitchens and baths. We have done lots of additions, whole house renovations, decks, and other typical remodeling projects. For this article, I was trying to think of something fun to read. So I thought I would write about some of the most unusual projects we have ever performed.

1. Underground movie theater a. Our client worked in the commercial construction field. They installed lots of underground conduits. So he decided he would put some concrete culverts in the ground leading from his basement to a large concrete room in the middle of his yard. The ceiling of this room was 10 feet below the ground surface. With the help of Ron Schwartz of Merge-Tech, we created an absolutely beautiful underground movie theater. They could play the movie as loud as they want and never hear it in the house 2. New foundation wall a. We literally jacked up the entire front of the 1920’s historic home to remove the existing rotten beams and rock foundation. While this house was supported on jacks, we hand excavated a new footing and then poured the concrete. A new block foundation wall

was constructed and then the house was lowered back down onto this foundation wall. After all of this work was performed, we had to reconstruct the large front porch and reinstall the 24 foot wooden columns holding up the porch roof 3. Structural repairs a. Dick Reynolds was asked to do a house inspection.

He proposed adding 15 pier footings in the crawl space. Sounds pretty easy. Well, this crawl space was a consistent 12” tall. Tracy and I spent about 3 days under this house digging pier footings with those hand garden shovels. That was many many years ago.

Tracy and I decided we would never do that type of project again, and thankfully we haven’t.

Again, what I am getting at is the true fun we all can have in our industry. Some projects are enjoyable, some are a challenge. They are all things we can look back on and enjoy. I can tell you that when Tracy and I were digging those footings in a 12” tall crawl space, I never thought I would write an article about it, but I have.

I was running my own retail greenhouse business from our backyard while chasing around our toddlers. We had to make a critical decision – invest in commercial property so we could grow into a major garden center or close the greenhouse business and focus on Steve’s construction dream? We decided to focus on construction, specifically remodeling. Steve is a salesman at heart and the challenge of practically living with someone while selling to them is the ultimate test of any sales person’s skills.

We are continuing to focus on renovations, primarily kitchens and baths. As the economy has begun to improve we are seeing more interest in custom building and would like to grow this aspect of our business.

Maplestone specializes in creating custom spaces to meet their clients’ specific needs. We just finished a custom home with geothermal heating & SIPS panels for a retired couple. This project was a lot of fun because we were able to apply aging in place design principles as well as utilize green building techniques.

Our bread and butter is remodeling. We do whole house renovations & major additions but we also embrace the smaller projects and repair jobs. We enjoy working with our associate HBA members such as designers and cabinetmakers to help transform our mutual client’s dreams into reality.

When moving from our little basement office into our current 1500 sq ft office last year, we only bought one piece of new furniture – a locking file cabinet.

The entire office is furnished with family heirlooms and items we have built or refurbished. That is what makes us so good at remodeling – we love to bring new life to old things.

Steve and I have twin boys, age 7. My favorite thing is camping with my family. It is a time when we relax and reconnect away from the pressures of our normally hectic life. I am an avid reader and enjoy gardening, swimming and hiking, My favorite modern book is The Host by Stephanie Meyer, but A Wrinkle in Time is my favorite classic.

The members of the Spike Committee, under the leadership of Jodi Tate, are watching with great interest the rebound of our Association over the past 12 to 18 months. We’re seeing new members join, some of the folks who left the association because of hard construction times are coming back; it’s just a great time to be in our industry.

One of the things we as Spike members are committed to is a visit at the six month mark for new members. This is a terrific time to find out how new members perceive the Association and their membership services. Our belief is we have to do everything in our power to welcome and nurture these folks. The hope is that our new members join committees and become involved in our association.

If you, as a long time member, haven’t joined a committee or become involved in an association project you may be missing one of the biggest and best advantages of being a member; that feeling of fellowship and belonging to a group that truly believes in advancing the building industry at the local, state and national level.

Our HBA staff is great at helping find just that committee assignment that can help you and your business. Give them a call this week and start getting more involved with the group… you’ll be glad you did.

CO N TI NUING E DUC ATION FREE Lead-Based Paint RRP Training - MAY, JUNE The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency & the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services, Division of Public Health, have partnered to train up to 300 new lead renovators by creating 300 free scholarships for the initial RRP Lead Renovator course. The RRP program mandates that contractors, property managers and others working for compensation, in homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978, must be trained and use lead-safe work practices.

After January 1, 2010, North Carolina requires everyone to be RRP certified if you’re offering to do any work on a unit built before 1978 for compensation. Take advantage of this rare opportunity for free training by registering and attending one of the following ten NC Accredited RRP Lead Renovator Training classes.
