PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Rich Achor – ARENA Builders There is no such thing as FREE in life. Can you feel the recovery? Have you experienced the optimism associated with the end of a recession? Do you feel taken care of, underappreciated, or plain not valued? Things not what you bargained for? Did you grow up getting gold stars for showing up at school or did you have to accomplish something, and earn the stars. Do you have your kids in a baseball or soccer league that does not keep score and gives everyone a trophy? Did you grow up with the expectations that house prices would only go up, the stock market was a safe long term bet, and the government was there to help? The only guarantees are death and taxes; the rest is up to you. If you are one of the parents who don’t like to see their kids compete, think what it will be like the first time they are forced to compete... and lose. Competition is at the heart of everyday life, we compete for everything. You competed for your spouse, you competed for your job, and you competed for the place in line at the grocery store. Love competition or hate it, the answer to that question is very telling, are you a victim or an initiator; do you make things happen? Competition motivates, it has intrinsic incentives, and it challenges us and makes us better. If you expect the government has your best interests at heart or believe they work FOR you, go to a VA clinic and see how our veterans are treated then contrast that with the health plan your Congressman, Senator and President have. Do you believe more government is the answer, go to the post office to send a package and then go to UPS or Fed Ex and attempt to do the same. Life is tough, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. I don’t like it, but that’s the way it is. If you are of the belief that government

will fix things for you/us I hate to break your bubble but that is not what their job is. You are responsible for you, you chose how you make a living, you chose how you save and plan for tomorrow, you chose how you treat your health. Your decisions affect your life, a government program -a stimulus, isn’t going to FIX anything. There is no such thing as FREE in life. You get what you earn, when you take from one to give to another you hurt both. You have taken from one what he/she toiled to earn and gave to another without allowing them the chance earn it themselves or to see that the choice(s) they make affect how they live. Charity is a wonderful thing it makes us feel good, but does it help those in “need”? What is the saying? “give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach the man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.” Go to a housing project and look at the people living there, they weren’t taught to provide for themselves, they were provided for. Is that how you want things? Look at the successful people you know. I bet you will find they are competitive, want to make their own choices, will gladly tell you stories about their poor choices and the consequences of those choices, and find that they don’t want anything given to them. Some may have had a break, but to a one, they are successful because they took that opportunity and acted upon it. I bet you know a number of others who had the same “break” and blew it. What is the point here? Stop looking to others for the answer. Government is not the answer, no one is going to fix things for you, and no one is going to give you anything worth having. Get up, get a plan and earn it. Want a better life, work for it. If you are reading this you are a business person and business sure is bad right? Victim or initiator? Vote November 2nd!! 3

Association Home Moves Towards Completion The Association House is moving towards completion and it’s time to talk about some of the unique product features in the home. Every Association House, because of the participation of members showcasing their finest products, has special features from many different craftsmen and suppliers. One of the most interesting in this year’s home is the Moen ioDigital controls in the MBR bath provided by Ferguson Enterprises. Not only will the MBR bath feature a vertical spa with multiple shower heads and body sprays, but the vertical spa will be controlled by ioDigital controls which will allow each shower user to create their preferred combination of temperature and water delivery. This means that husband and wife can recreate their own perfect shower experience each time with the touch of a button. No more fiddling around to get the shower temperature right! The Energy Star features of the home will create an efficient, sustainable home by using a number of systems and products. Guided by Sealing Agents sister company, Performance Point, as Energy Star rater, the home will be much tighter and energy efficient than the traditional “code compliant” home, while maintaining good indoor air quality. The heating and cooling systems will feature a main level high efficiency 95 AFUE furnace, higher SEER air conditioning, and air cycler units. Energy Star requirements in third party testing, insulation, air sealing, duct sealing, framing, and HVAC are demonstrating that energy efficient homes make good sense for long term value for homeowners. The 2010 Association Home, located at Lot 246, Brookberry Farm, is being built by Keith and Mark Rogers of Keith Rogers Homes, Inc. The home will showcase many of our industry’s leading technologies and our Association’s finest talents. The Association Home is being built at Brookberry Farms, one of Winston-Salem’s leading luxury family communities. An elegant two-story with traditional flair, the home features main level living, a main level two car garage, and a third garage tucked in the basement. The space is open and airy with many windows, varied ceiling heights, and polished finishes. Outdoor living utilizes a large screened porch and deck. Since it’s inception in 1987, the Association Home has been a mainstay in supporting the Home Builders Association of WinstonSalem and its members. The success of this project has supported the many industry efforts of the HBA including advocacy, education, and promotion of the home building industry. Member’s participation and support of the Association Home has helped to keep service levels high and dues low. Anyone interested in participating in the Association Home is encouraged to drop by the HBA offices to look at the plans or call Keith. Discounts and donations is another opportunity for our members to participate and get valuable marketing exposure at membership meetings, this newsletter, and in the home during the Parade of Homes. The Association Home is an annual must see destination for the public!

ASSOCIATE GUEST COLUMN

Rob Powell, Sr. V. P. of Sales, Smith Phillips Building Supply One recent evening I was blessed to witness one of nature’s hidden wonders. While on an after dinner stroll down the beach, my family and I walked up on a group of people surrounding a roped off area. Fifty five nights earlier a female Loggerhead turtle traveled thousands of miles and walked up the same beach to lay her clutch of eggs. These eggs had been buried beneath the sand for almost two months. A group of volunteers called the North Myrtle Beach Turtle Patrol spent the last few days and nights sitting watch for the “boil”. The “boil” is named so because when the baby turtles emerge from the sand after hatching, the sand looks like it is boiling. Two or three days earlier the group of 70-120 eggs hatched. They remained under the sand for their first few days of life. After coming out of their shells, they ate their shells and yolk sacks to gain energy for their emergence and two day swim. It is difficult to believe, but just after emerging they started a two day long journey swimming in the open sea. These little creatures are a little larger than a quarter. The volunteers spend countless hours watching the nest, protecting it. They rake the sand to make sure the walk to the water is easy. They don’t allow flash photography or white lights of any kind. These volunteers are working to maximize the survival rate of every egg. Even with all of this help, only 1 in 1,000 of these small creatures will live to maturity. So what does this have to do with the construction industry? Well, not very much honestly. But with all of the negative stuff in our lives it is refreshing to see the beauty of nature and witness something as rare as this. There are a few things that come to mind, while watching the turtles. The baby sea turtles, just a few days old and without help from their mothers had their first meal and started off into the unknown. They were not completely without direction, you see, they get their guidance from above. They follow the light of the moon. The moon was almost full and reflected brightly off the incoming waves. They waited until it was bright enough to come out of the sand and followed the light into the surf. 10

All of us working in this industry are navigating rough seas and must take time to chart our course carefully if we want to survive. It is often stated that only 1 in 7 new businesses survive the first 5 years. I feel certain that we will loose more than that in our industry as we negotiate the current contraction. With the demand for new houses down almost 75%, it would make sense that the reduction in supply would be about the same. Every link in the supply chain is affected. Right now a lot of established businesses are simply holding on with all their might. We all need a little help to make it through. We need to take care of each other and help each other through this mess, just like the volunteers help the turtles. Taking time to look for guidance, and following it will help us to chart our course through this storm. Staying positive, even when it is difficult and not giving up will get us through. Like those little turtles, we have to dig out of this mess, take our guidance from above, and fight for our survival.

Why Hire a Certified Lead-Safe Renovator? by Chuck Hicks, President, Remodelers Council, HBAWS

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently enacted a new regulation to help reduce the possibility of lead poisoning among children when their homes are being remodeled. Homes built before 1978, when the substance was banned, are more likely to have surfaces containing lead paint. The EPA estimates approximately 38 million homes in the United States may contain lead paint. The Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires that remodelers and other contractors who disturb painted surfaces as part of their renovations in pre-1978 homes become trained and certify their firms. These renovators are educated about the rule and will explain the requirements to home owners, employ lead-safe work practices, contain applicable work areas, clean up after working, and maintain records proscribed by the EPA. The owners of residences built before 1978 should ask remodelers and other contractors if theirs is a “Lead-Safe Certified Firm” by the EPA. These renovators will understand how to protect your family from potential lead hazards because they have been trained and certified under the EPA regulation. Certified firms can display a “Lead-Safe Certified Firm” seal with their firm’s approval number to verify their professional credentials. Potential remodeling customers may be tempted to attempt remodeling work themselves or hire a contractor who may be cheaper and willing to skirt the law by not following the lead paint regulation. However, when there is lead paint present, failing to hire a professionally trained and certified remodeler risks the health of anyone living in the home by greatly increasing the chances of exposure to its dust. Children under age six are most susceptible to lead poisoning, which results in developmental delay and long-term disabilities. Professional remodelers who have become EPA “Lead-Safe Certified” possess the training, skills, and specialized equipment to conduct remodeling projects and protect residents from lead hazards. Certified remodelers contain lead paint work areas in plastic and use methods of managing dust to prevent lead exposure. Techniques used include misting dust, avoiding burning or high-speed scraping devices, followed by thorough cleaning with high-filtration vacuums. The dust is trapped and safely disposed of. Certified remodelers also maintain records, such as a work practice checklist that documents the use of lead-safe activities. Only these remodelers have the training and tools to complete a remodeling job successfully and safely in these homes. Consumers can also search for “Lead-Safe Certified Firms” near them at http://www.hbaws.net/leadpaint.html. This site also has more information about lead, including a pamphlet about lead-safe renovating entitled “Renovate Right”, on the website. For more home remodeling tips, contact Beverly Hayes (336) 768-5942 at the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem or visit http://www.hbaws.net/remodelorsmem.html 14
