2011 Legislative Conference

HBAWS

June 7 & 8, Raleigh, NC

We had a very productive Legislative Conference in Raleigh on June 7 & 8. The House and Senate completed their busy work schedule before the self-imposed “crossover” deadline passed. Both the House and Senate considered hundreds of bills and we can proudly report that all of our legislative priorities are well positioned. The governmental affairs are key to our housing industry to track and to ensure legislation supports residential construction. Thank you to our members who traveled to Raleigh for our Legislative reception and visits. You can see them in the pictures on this page along with the elected legislators and they included: Steve Hurst, Erik Anderson, Nancy Gould, Jennifer Sammons, Rich Achor, Kathy Craven-Snodgrass, Steve McSwain and Jerry Herman.

A good state wide turn out attended the reception on Tuesday night and it was great to have our members walking the halls of the legislative buildings! It was interesting to see where our elected officials office had moved to. The new majority came out all right with their new office locations. More photos page 10

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Steve Hurst – Steve E. Hurst Construction

MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATION IS KEY Our HBAWS membership can only be as informed as each member chooses to be. Our staff works hard to keep you informed, connected and up-to-date with what is going on within our association and industry. This is accomplished through our website that is updated daily, our monthly newsletter, weekly emails and phone calls. Communications methods have changed dramatically over the last few years as email has moved to the forefront, as an eco-friendly replacement to snail mail. With the addition of various social media outlets, online communications has become the most cost effective and efficient way to stay in touch with customers, vendors, etc. The HBAWS Newsletter has been available online for the past two years and the clicks to read have increased substantially. As our association continues to retool and downsize expenses, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors have voted/approved to discontinue the hardcopy of the newsletter. Not only does this save rising printing costs, but also saves on mail handling, labeling and postage. This is a sizable cost reduction that will enable our resources to be used in more productive ways for our members. This change occurs in August and a postcard will be sent to remind members to view the newsletter online. Some of the many great online features include: • Magazine/flip-page format is viewed easily on your computer screen with zoom feature for easy reading • Online newsletter offers printing single pages or the entire document from your desktop computer • Full color ads and artwork with active links to advertiser’s websites/email • Advertising rates have been reduced to make the newsletter a better value for members to market their company, products and services • Top three categories of Sponsor’s Club members now have active links back to their websites.

• The online newsletter is available to view by computer, electronic devise and smart phones, AND is environmentally responsible. Our HomeBuilder Newsletter is a great communication tool for all of our members, so why not tell others in your company to get connected by visiting: www.hbaws.org/newsletter.html

Rick Busch, Busch Insurance Adequate Auto Insurance Limits… How Much Insurance Is Enough? Every day we see or hear the commercials about saving money on our auto insurance. “15 minutes saves you 15% on car premiums”. And the real truth is you probably can save money on your auto insurance if you are willing to reduce your level of protection and peace of mind.

I carry $1,000,000 per person and $1,000,000 per accident uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage. I want to know I have the protection when someone with really low limits or no insurance hits me. The big question is;

What Limits Should I Carry?

“Do I want the cheapest insurance I can buy?”

My standard answer to this question? As much as you can afford. Not only do you want to have enough car insurance to protect you in the event you damage someone else’s property or injure them, but you want to make sure you have enough uninsured/underinsured coverage to take care of you and the occupants of your car in the event of accident.

You probably don’t drive the cheapest car available, or wear the lowest priced clothing you can buy. You probably don’t buy the cheapest cut of meat at the grocery store either.

$50,000/$100,000/$50,000: These limits, while better, are still inadequate to properly protect you.

This notion of buying the cheapest insurance available makes no sense. You want an insurance agent who can discuss your situation with you on a regular basis and continue to tailor your insurance protection to your specific needs. You do want reasonable pricing and you want it for the long term, meaning not only this year but every year for the next ten to twenty years. You also want to make sure you’re getting all the credits you are eligible for. No one likes to be overcharged, but everyone likes to be properly protected.

$100,000/$300,000/$100,000: Very common limits for most households. Somewhat adequate, but not enough coverage in the event of a catastrophic “at fault” accident.

There is no substitute for having a long term relationship with your insurance agent. WHO YOUR INSURANCE AGENT IS DOESN’T MATTER…UNTIL IT DOES.

Here are some examples of available limits:: $30,000/$60,000/$25,000: These limits, while adequate to keep your car registered in North Carolina are nowhere near sufficient to protect you in the event of an “at fault” accident. As an agency we strongly recommend you increase your coverage limits.

$250,000/$500,00/$100,000: Good limits, especially when followed by an umbrella policy for at least $1,000,000. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Very few people take the time to think about this protection. Did you know you can buy higher limits of protection for you and your vehicles occupants in the event you are struck by someone who doesn’t have any insurance or who doesn’t have enough insurance?

Association House Donations & Discounts

If you can dream it, we can build it.

Fall Parade Association Home Located at Brookberry Farm

The 2011 Parade of Homes Association house is well on its way to completion. Not only will this be a showpiece home loaded with curb appeal and charm, but it will also feature many extras on the inside that will provide the homeowner with ultimate luxury and many cutting edge modern conveniences. Some of the many unique features of this home will not be visible at all after construction is complete. The home begins with a sealed crawl space that will provide exceptional moisture control and waterproofing for the foundation. This creates a much tighter and more efficient space than traditional crawl spaces built to code. Along with other cost saving energy efficient systems, the ceiling features a massive amount of spray foam insulation that contributes to the Energy Star efficiency of this home. Also hidden in the ceiling is extra soundproofing material which is installed below the home theater on the second floor, and surrounding the powder room and master bath. Next is the surround sound installed throughout the home with built in speakers and high tech wiring for TV’s and other electronics. With digital controls that operate the various systems, personalized settings will allow the homeowner to program the home in multiple ways for their ease and enjoyment. Once again, Buck Horn Construction has thought of everything to make this special home one-of-a-kind.

BUILDING PROFESSIONALS REMODELERS UPDATE Mike Scardina, President, NAHBR, HBAWS So, we are at the half point of 2011 already! I hope everyone is seeing an up turn in their business as our economy seems to be improving. For this month’s program, we will have Don Dockery with us for an annual codes update. Boring maybe, but we are all aware of the importance of keeping up to date with recent code changes so I look forward to seeing everyone at our dinner meeting on June 14! Last week, the compressor on my heat pump, (installed in 2005) locked up for the second time. I had the compressor replaced in 2008 while under warranty and now, I am being told the entire unit is out of warranty. Although I am not done pushing the manufacturer and distributor to stand behind their products, this has renewed my commitment to stand behind my products and services, above and beyond any written warranty. As remodeling professionals, we need to emphasize the value of doing business with a true professional, someone you can count on for service before, during, and after the sale. Even during tough economic times, this service, or commitment to our customers, does have value to our customers and they will be willing to pay a fair price for it. Let’s make it a point during our presentations to emphasize the value of dealing with a true professional!

Professional Women in Building Rosemary Howell, President

Professional Women in Building would like to thank Wanda Wilson for hosting our June meeting at her home. After reviewing our ticket sales for the Belk Charity Event, we voted to add to the proceeds from our treasury and contribute $300.00 to Hospice in memory of Darlene Goode. We will not be meeting during the month of July but will resume in August which will be our BuildPac donation meeting. We will be collecting food and/or money for the Second Harvest Food Bank at this meeting. During the first 6 months of the year, PWB raised money for our scholarship fund, donated to the Welcome Baby Program/SCAN, collected books for the Shepherd’s Center and discussed ways to help various other charities.
