Editorial Miles and miles around the world, the US, UK, French and Spanish seasons are behind us. The season par excellence of the most competitive polo has arrived. Argentina lifts the curtain to receive welcome the entire polo world, because no self-respecting enthusiast fails to pack their bags and make sure they travel to the cathedral of polo.
Obligation or devotion? Who knows? But as we have done for many years now, at La Bocha by Snoopy Polo we are also getting ready to be present at the Palermo Open. Because we love it, but also because we creating ties between Argentine readers and this publication, which comes out simultaneously in several different parts of the world. We are passionate about telling you what happens all over the world, on each field, in each heart. It is a festival of polo in which Tortugas and Hurlingham have already been played, with victories for Ellerstina in the former and La Dolfina in the latter. It is time for the big event, time to see who will win their group and reach the final on the 9th with the expectation of lifting the most coveted trophy in world polo. This year, at least two players, Juanma Nero and Pablo Mac Donough, could win some new silverwear but in the ranks of their former rivals. This situation is one of the most eye catching of this 118th Open, in which the team from Cañuelas have laid the foundations to achieve great victories over the next few years, that is,with the permission of the Pieres brothers, who will do everything they can to stop this happening.

Editorial Millas y más millas por el mundo, atrás quedaron las temporadas de USA, UK, Francia y España. Llego la temporada por excelencia del polo más competitivo, Argentina levanta el telón para recibir la esencia de dentro y de fuera, porque en estas fechas no hay aficionado que se precie, que no prepare la valija y se plantee estar en la catedral del polo mundial. Obligación o devoción? No sabemos que es lo que ocurre, pero un año más, y van muchos de forma continuanda, La Bocha by SnoopyPolo también las prepara, para estar presente en el Abierto de Palermo. Porque nos encanta, pero además estamos consiguiendo crear un vínculo entre los lectores argentinos y esta publicación, que simultáneamente sucede en otras latitudes del mundo. Nos apasiona poder contar lo que pasa en cada rincón, en cada cancha, en cada corazoncito. Esta fiesta del polo, donde ya se disputaron Tortugas y Hurlingham, con sendos triunfos para Ellerstina en el primero y para La Dolfina en la última gran final. Todo queda en lo más alto, a la espera de quien conseguirá, en primer término ganar en su zona y luego llegar el próximo día 9 con la ilusión de levantar el mas preciado de todos los trofeos de polo a nivel mundial. En esta edición, en la que al menos dos jugadores, Juanma Neró y Pablo Mac Donough, podrían conseguir un nuevo entorchado pero en las filas del rival a batir. Esta circunstancia es una de las más llamativas de este 118 Abierto, donde los de Cañuelas han sentados las bases para obtener grandes triunfos en los próximos años, con el permiso de los Pieres, que se resistirán a que ésto suceda. El polo sigue en auge, sobre todo en estas latitudes donde se vive con una pasión inaudita, con la misma devoción con la que se vive todo en Argentina. Como se vivío en San Luis el título de Campeones del Mundo. Ahora resta que se siga exportando con calidad y esmero a los nuevos lugares emergentes, como China, Dubai y otros puntos que incrementan sus eventos de forma constante. Las Monjitas are practically infallible in Sotogrande. For a long time they have been painting the finals orange in the stands, where their fans never go unnoticed. And nor do they go unnoticed on the field. They have their own followers and others who approve of their colours, their primed horses, their quality play or simply the man that is Camilo Bautista, the father of this clan, and that philosophy that, as the man himself says, is their own.

It’s the night after the final in Restaurante La Quinta in Sotogrande. Their tables overlook the Río Field, where Camilo and his lads have lifted cups or applauded those who lifted them on so many occasions. Nine years taking part in events that they transform into a delight because they know that polo is lost and won and they do both with their heads held high. There is a table with 15 chairs, orange ribbons, orange candles and an orange bucket in the centre containing champagne on ice for the champions who gradually arrive. There are still kids running around everywhere wearing the Las Monjitas shirts that they gave out at the tethering post just after the match. “It had to come!” he says, visibly emotional. “I’m overjoyed. This year we did a good job. We have fought all year and we were targeting the Sotogrande Gold Cup. I’ve played in the Gold Cup for nine years I hadn’t been able to win it until today. It was the one that eluded us. We won the 40th!” Camilo tells us with pride, having experienced those runs of lifting cups, or coming close, when the effort made is the same but there is no reward.

Monjitas put behind them the final they lost in 2009 and their absence in 2010 due to the injury suffered by their Colombian patron, Camilo Bautista. The match was equal to the occasion with both teams delivering an excellent sporting spectacle and maintaining a high standard of play throughout the six chukkas. Las Monjitas cemented their victory on the back of the consistency and good team play of all four members, but the star was without doubt Iñaki Laprida, who at the end of the match received the honours as the best player in the final. His teammates Camilo Bautista, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Francisco Elizalde also gave their all to secure the champion’s title. For Ellerston Facundo Pieres and James Packer did a particularly good job. They were responsible for keeping alive their
team’s hopes to retain the crown obtained in 2010. Ellerston were first to take the lead with a goal from Nicolás Pieres, but Laprida quickly responded to draw the match level on 1-1. In these first seven minutes there was only time for one more goal, converted by Facundo Pieres to make it 2-1. In the second chukka Las Monjitas gradually started to control the game and this dominance enabled them to draw level on three goals, with Elizalde’s contribution pivotal at this stage of the match. In the third period, Las Monjitas managed to turn the game around and thanks to individual goals from Elizalde and Laprida they ended the first half with a 5-4 lead. The two teams returned to the field of play after the break. Facundo Pieres scored another goal for Ellerston and they drew level on 5-5. Eduardo Novillo Astra-
da coordinated the Las Monjitas attacks and scored his team’s sixth goal, to make it 6-5. The final minutes of the fourth chukka were a seesaw with both teams displaying a high standard of play and fighting to gain control of the ball. Elizalde scored for Las Monjitas and James Packer did the same for Ellerston. Las Monjitas were ahead with just a one-goal lead on 7-6. In the last two chukkas excitement and expectation invaded Los Pinos Field Four, where the effort from Ellerston to turn the game around was clear. Las Monjitas confirmed their supremacy and were crowned champions of the High-Goal Gold Cup for the first time since they had taken part in the Santa María Polo Club tournaments. Iñaki Laprida was recognised as the best player in the final, while the mare ‘Esperanza’, ridden by Eduardo Novillo Astrada in the fourth chukka of the final, won the prize for the best pony of the day.m

Las Monjitas es prácticamente infaltable en Sotogrande. Desde hace mucho tiempo tiñe las finales de color naranja en las tribunas, donde no suelen pasar desapercibidos. En la cancha, tampoco. Tiene seguidores propios y ajenos que simpatizan con sus colores, sus caballos en forma, su juego de calidad, o simplemente con el hombre que es Camilo Bautista, el padre de este clan y de esa filosofía que como el mismo dice, les es propia. Es la noche posterior a la final en el Restaurante “La Quinta” de Sotogrande. Con sus mesas que miran a la Cancha del Río, donde tantas veces Camilo y sus chicos levantaron copas o aplaudieron a los que las levantan. Nueve años participando de jornadas que ellos transforman en deleite porque saben que al polo se pierde y se gana y hacen ambas cosas con la frente en alto. Hay una mesa con 15 sillas, lazos naranjas, velas naranjas y un cubo naranja en el centro que guarda entre hielo el champagne para los campeones que van llegando de a poco. Al estilo Camilo, en familia. Él está radiante, lo está Rocío, su mujer y lo están todos los que lo quieren. Aún quedan por todos lados chicos correteando con las camisetas de Las Monjitas que regalaron en el palenque apenas terminado el partido. “¡Tenía que llegar!” Dice visiblemente emocionado.

Era la que nos faltaba. ¡Ganamos la número 40!” Nos dice Camilo, con orgullo y experiencia en estos trances de levantar copas, o de quedarse ahí cerca, donde los esfuerzos son los mismos y no se ve la recompensa. “Yo traía el temita de hace dos años con el suplementario y unas ganas violentas de ganarla. Y es muy emocionante porque apuntas para la de Oro y haces las cosas bien. Pero… final es final y con un equipo como Ellerston, con tanta organización, es difícil” Las Monjitas también tiene su organización y hay sobradas pruebas de ello. Sin embargo, su líder, nos confiesa que en Las Monjitas, gana otra cosa: “Gana la filosofía. Aquí se disfruta, se goza, se respeta a todo el mundo y tenemos un gran amor por los caballos y por el grupo que juega en Las Monjitas.” El Partido.

Con la obtención de la Copa de Oro en la edición 2011, Las Monjitas dejaba atrás la final perdida en 2009 y la no participación en 2010 por la lesión sufrida por el patrón colombiano, Camilo Bautista. El desarrollo del partido estuvo a la altura de las circunstancias ambos equipos brindaron un excelente espectáculo deportivo y mantuvieron el nivel de juego a lo largo de los seis chukkers. Las Monjitas cimentó su victoria en la regularidad y el buen juego colectivo de los cuatros integrantes del equipo, pero sin dudas el punto más alto fue Iñaki Laprida, que al término del partido recibió los honores como mejor jugador de la final. Además sus compañeros Camilo Bautista, Eduardo Novillo Astrada y Francisco Elizalde dieron lo mejor de si para obtener el título de campeón. Por su parte en Ellerston se destacó la labor de Facundo Pieres y James Packer. Ellos fueron los encargados de mantener viva las esperanzas de su equipo por retener la corona obtenida en 2010.

Ellerston empezó ganando el partido con un gol de Nicolás Pieres, pero Laprida rápidamente empataba 1-1 el partido, en esos primero siete minutos solo hubo lugar para un gol más y este fue convertido por Facundo Pieres 2-1. En el segundo chukker Las Monjitas de poco se iba convirtiendo en dominadores del juego y ese dominio le permitía empatar el partido en tres goles, en este tramo del partido fue fundamental la participación de Elizalde. En el tercer período, Las Monjitas lograban dar la vuelta al marcador y fue gracias a goles individuales de Elizalde y Laprida, de este modo finalizaban ganando el primer tiempo por 5-4. Los dos equipos volvían al campo de juego luego del descanso. Facundo Pieres anotaba un gol mas para Ellerston y empataba el partido 5-5, Eduardo Novillo Astrada manejaba y guiaba las jugadas de ataque de Las Monjitas y el mismo sumaba el sexto gol de su equipo 6-5. del cuarto chukker fueron minutos de ida y vuelta con los dos equipos mostrando un buen nivel de juego y luchando por tener el control absoluto de la bocha, Elizalde por el lado de Las Monjitas y James Packer en Ellerston sumaban un gol por bando. Las Monjitas quedaban arriba por un solo gol de ventaja 7-6. En los dos últimos chukkers la emoción y la expectación invadió la cancha cuatro de Los Pinos, donde se pudo ver el esfuerzo del equipo de Ellerston por torcer la historia. Las Monjitas confirmó su supremacía y se coronó campeón de La Copa de Oro de Alto Handicap por primera vez desde que participa en los torneos del Santa María Polo Club. Iñaki Laprida se quedó con el reconocimiento al mejor jugador de la final, mientras que la yegua “Esperanza” jineteada por Eduardo Novillo Astrada en el cuarto chukker de la final se llevo el premio al mejor caballo de la jornada.m

Of an Argentine mother and Spanish father, everything about him seems to be the result of this mix: from his nuanced accent to his relationship with polo, which he approaches both with the unbridled passion. by
Though left-handed, he trained himself to play with his right hand on the polo field at around 17 years of age, when his uncle gave him four ponies. “It was Michael Cárcano, an Argentine born in Córdoba, a true gentleman, married to my mother’s only sister, María Rosa. They lived in Paris and played there for many years at St Mesme with Robert de Balkany, Ely de Rothchild, Paul de Ganay, Pedro Domecq and Eduardo Aznar. In the UK he played with the Vesteys and Lord Cowdray, who were great friends of his. He won the King’s Cup in Madrid and also played at Deauville with the Torres Zavaletas and Alex Mihanovich.” Álvaro is a graduate in politics and economics; he studied in Madrid and found it difficult to combine polo and work. A holder of both an Argentine and a Spanish passport and with the surname Bemberg on his mother’s side, he would spend seasons in Argentina, where he played with the Gassyebaile’s at La Carlota and Rancho El Tata. in Sotogrande, until that year when the Paniagua field was inaugurated. He receives us at Dos Lunas, the estate near Sotogrande where he and his wife Anunciada have imbued every nook and cranny with details that make it unique. The interview takes place in an immense room, its windows overlooking a brandnew, perfect, immaculate exercise ring. It is almost midday, which is when Anunciada is doing her dressage exercises there, under the instruction of Joaquín, her coach, who corrects and directs her over a megaphone and who she obeys with the ‘Germanic’ discipline that Álvaro speaks of when he refers to her. There also the polo stables, the exercise track, the polo field, the orange house, carefully selected plants, the technological advances needed to keep the land irrigated, every detail beautifully presented. It is a private amusement park where the main attraction is the horses. We talk about beginnings, about obligations, about his father, “who never imposed rules but spoke his mind” and advised him after a knock on the polo field that left him out of action for a while:
“Look, Álvaro, you have two options: play polo or work, but if you do both, you’ll do them badly…” It was advice that he put into practice when his son, Pascual, was born, to whom, without doubt, he transmitted the passion that in one way or another now envelops the whole family. How was that return to polo? How did Pascual start? When Pascual was 12 or 13 we went to Argentina for Easter and my friend Gonzalo Tanoira gave him a mallet as a gift. We went to ‘El Palomar’, a farm that my mother has near Necocha and there, from boredom, he got on a pony and started hitting. Anunciada didn’t want him to play polo, but when we got back to Madrid he went to see Francisco Lucena, who had a little polo school in Puerto de Hierro, and he started playing with him. Then he came here to Sotogrande, played in the low-goal, and that was when I started to see that it was serious. One year when there weren’t many teams and we had thought we would form a medium-goal team, David Stirling

proposed that I form a high-goal team with Nacho Domecq, Gonzalito Pieres, Pablito Mc Donough and Pascual… I didn’t think Pascual was ready for that polo, he was just a one-goaler! That was when I called Gonzalo Tanoira, who was sort of my mentor, married to Luisita Miguens who is a cousin of mine. Gonzalo said to me: “High-goal polo is much less dangerous than the mediumgoal; the higher the standard, the better the players and the safer it is”. With that team, Ciguiñuelas, we won the first Gold Cup... and the next year we reached the final with the same team but with Carlitos Miguens, who made a huge effort to come and play. We lost in the final against Santa Maria. It was too good a start for polo to just be a hobby of Pascual’s and it became a necessity. “Dad, I’m no good at studying, I need to

be on the field, with the horses, I need polo” was how he explained it to me while he was studying in Madrid. There are those who say that due to the nature of professional polo there is no worse sport for educating a child, can you refute this? It’s complicated... I think it depends on each person’s personality; I think Pascual is an educated person. Would I like him to broaden his horizons? Undoubtedly. But I think polo also teaches him a lot. First, it teaches you humility, to respect others, to do the right thing, to choose well.... Does losing teach you a lesson? More than winning. It gives you a desire to do things well, one learns from one’s mistakes and not from one’s victories. Now, for instance, (the day after Ellerston defeated Dos Lunas in the semifinal of the Gold Cup) we are already going over everything.

How did Dos Lunas emerge? Dos Lunas is the result of an idea that we had with Gonzalo Tanoira. He loved Sotogrande, at some point he tried to get Kerry Packer to come. He loved the climate, the good polo fields, but there wasn’t enough facilities for looking after the horses. Tanoira said that there should be somewhere with good exercise tracks, good stables and good fields. In that order. His idea was to cut costs by sending horses over to Algeciras by boat in October, to take them out in the countryside for two or three months, gather them in February and have them ready in March so that the European patrons would come and play in May before the seasons begin in their country. We then went to speak to Enrique Zobel and he offered to sell us Ayala, the two fields at the bottom, but he had an administrator who did not make things easy for us.

So I started looking for somewhere else. Iñigo Vallejo Nágera, who had a house here, his stables and his field, offered me the land next door. When I bought the land and started to develop the field, he put this on sale and I bought it. Unfortunately, at the moment Gonzalo’s project started to take shape, Tanoira died in Buenos Aires and was left a sort of orphan in the polo world. Luckily he had put me in contact with Rodrigo Rueda and he and Roberto James are magnificent people who did not let me feel alone. What is the payback from Polo? You give a lot, what do you get back? The payback is that I love it. I think I have been able to give my son what I didn’t have, the organisation, the good horses. Everything I would have loved to have had and I couldn’t. I like deciding the breeding, which mare to make embryos with, how the new horses evolve and I am fortunate enough to do all of this with the Rueda family. What percentage of your time is spent on polo? I would hope that more and more as time goes by. I want to retire at 65, which is a family rule. And I’m 59. Polo takes up my thinking time: thinking about Dos Lunas, thinking about breeding, thinking stallions, thinking about auctions... When all this is professionalised, is it still enjoyable? Polo is enjoyable in Argentina, estancia polo up to Cámara cup level. When four friends are creating a good vibe. At Open level or in the very competitive European or US tournaments I’m not so sure, I think the sponsor is always looking for results. You are someone who can demand. When the results don’t come, when you lose, when the team doesn’t work, do you think: “oh well, we’ve had fun this season...” or “this isn’t working”, even if friends are left by the wayside? I haven’t been in that situation, because we haven’t had disastrous seasons.
But I have a sponsor that I try to keep and the pressure can pile up, because patrons want to win, lift the cup, they want results. Do you think the future of polo is completely in the hands of sponsors?
The telephone rings. It’s Camilo Bautista. “To tell me that Pascual played brilliantly yesterday. I tell him that the horses we have brought in are making a difference. He rode two or three good mares that he was keeping aside and polo’s played on horseback, right?”
I think there will be two categories. The estancia polo, amateur and very respectable.
If you dream about what you would like Pascual to achieve, what do you dream about?
And then the medium-goal polo from 8 to 20 goals, which is a patron polo but it does not need sponsors.
I dream of seeing him play in the Open and to do well. To play with friends and do a good job.
And then there is the highly competitive polo like at Palm Beach or England and now Sotogrande, where you have a superpatron, which is the case of Ellerston, Las Monjitas, Lechuza and some others, or otherwise you have to go out and find sponsors.
And if he were a professional, who would you like to see him play with?
In your mind, what is the future of Spanish polo? Complicated. It has a future because there a lot of youngsters playing.

But it is mostly recreational, weekend polo. I’m concerned that there is nobody like Aznar, Gil de Biedma or Ramón Mora were in their day. There’s nobody, or I haven’t seen them. Polo is associated with fun, with showiness. I think Spaniards associate polo with luxury and ostentation, which prevents people from watching it. Sotogrande is set up for a high standard of competition. What does it lack in your opinion? It has the fields, it has the facilities. The club has made good stables, Ayala and us provide facilities. If I’m honest, the lack of a David Stirling, a man who knows a lot about polo, working day and night and who can call patrons all over the world and invite them to play here. It pains me to see practically no polo played here in April and May. I think Iñigo Zóbel, Ramón Mora and me should be more united, sit down around a table and talk. That it is what I propose to them here.
She is a fanatic. Much crazier about horses than any of us. When I met her she did show jumping. We went to live in England and she left and sold her show jumping horse when the three kids were born, but she always wanted to jump again. De madre argentina y padre español, todo en él, parece ser el resultado de esa misma mezcla; desde su acento con matices, hasta su relación con el polo, que vive por momentos con la pasión desmedida de una tarde en la cancha de Palermo, y por otros, con cautela. by
A pesar de ser zurdo, se hizo diestro arriba del caballo para jugar al polo, alrededor de los 17 años, cuando un tío suyo le regaló cuatro caballos. “Era Michael Cárcano, un argentino, nacido en Córdoba, un gran Señor, casado con la única hermana de mi madre, María Rosa, vivían en París y jugó muchos años allí en St Mesme con Robert de Balkany, Ely de Rothchild, Paul de Ganay, Pedro Domecq y Eduardo Aznar. En UK con los Vestey y Lord Cowdray de los cuales era gran amigo. Ganó la Copa del Rey en Madrid, y jugaba también en Deauville con los Torres Zavaleta y Alex Mihanovich.” Álvaro es Licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y Económicas, estudió en Madrid y encontraba difícil conciliar el polo y el trabajo. Nos recibe en Dos Lunas, la finca vecina a Sotogrande donde tanto él, como su mujer, Anunciada, han impregnado cada rincón de detalles, que la hacen única en su especie.
Hablamos de comienzos, de obligaciones, de su padre “que no imponía reglas pero decía las cosas” y que le aconsejó después de un golpe, producto del polo, que lo dejó dormido por un rato:
La entrevista tiene lugar en una inmensa sala, que mira a través de los cristales al picadero flamante, perfecto, inmaculado. Es casi mediodía, la hora en que Anunciada realiza allí sus ejercicios de doma clásica, a las órdenes de Joaquín, su entrenador, que por megafonía la corrige y dirige y al que ella obedece con la disciplina “germánica” de la que Álvaro habla cuando se refiere a ella.

Consejo que puso en práctica coincidiendo con el momento en que nace su hijo Pascual, al que, sin duda, transmitió la pasión que hoy en día envuelve, de una u otra manera, a toda la familia. ¿Cómo fue ese retorno?¿Cómo empieza Pascual? Santa y mi amigo, Gonzalo Tanoira, le regaló un taco. Nos fuimos a “El Palomar” un campo que tiene mi madre cerca de Necochea y allí, de aburrido, se subió a un petizo y empezó a taquear. Anunciada no quería que él jugara al polo, pero al volver a Madrid, se fue a verlo a Francisco Lucena, que tenía una escuelita de polo en Puerta de Hierro y empezó a taquear con él. Luego ya vino aquí a Sotogrande, jugó el bajo y ahí empecé a ver que la cosa venía en serio. Un año que venían pocos equipos y habíamos pensado en armar un equipo de mediano, David Stirling me propuso armar un equipo de alto con Nacho Domecq, Gonzalito Pieres, Pablito Mac Donough y Pascual… pensé que Pascual no estaba para ese polo, tenía un gol!... Fue entonces cuando lo llamé a Gonzalo Tanoira, que era un poco mi mentor, casado con Luisita Miguens que es prima
mía. Gonzalo me dijo: “Es mucho menos peligroso el polo alto que el polo mediano, cuanto más sube el nivel de polo, mejor son los jugadores y menos peligro tiene.” Con ese equipo, Ciguiñuelas, ganamos la primera Copa de Oro… y al año siguiente llegamos a la final con el mismo equipo pero con Carlitos Miguens, que se vino a jugar haciendo un esfuerzo tremendo. Perdimos la final contra Santa Maria. Demasiado buen comienzo como para que el polo fuese solo una afición en la vida de Pascual y pasara a ser una necesidad: “Papá yo no sirvo para estudiar, necesito estar en el campo, con los caballos, necesito el polo” fue su planteo mientras estudiaba en Madrid. Hay quién dice que por las características del polo profesional, no existe peor deporte para educar a un hijo, ¿puedes refutarlo?
Es complicado… Creo que va con la personalidad de cada uno, yo creo que Pascual es una persona educada, ¿Si me gustaría que ampliara más sus horizontes? Sin duda. Pero creo que el polo también te enseña muchas cosas. Primero humildad, enseña a respetar a los demás, a no equivocarse, a escoger bien la situación… ¿Perder enseña? Más que ganar. Te hace tener más ganas de hacer las cosas bien, se aprende de los errores y no de las victorias. Por ejemplo ahora (al día siguiente de que Ellerston derrotara a Dos Lunas en la semifinal de la Copa de Oro) ya estamos revisando todo. ¿Cómo nace Dos Lunas? Dos Lunas es el resultado de una idea que compartimos con Gonzalo Tanoira. A él le encantaba Sotogrande, en algún momento había intentado que viniera Kerry Packer, le encantaba el clima, las buenas canchas, pero faltaba infraestructura ade-

cuada, para cuidar los caballos. Tanoira decía que había que tener un lugar aquí con buenas pistas de vareo, buenas caballerizas y buenas canchas. En ese orden. Su idea era abaratar los costos mandando caballos por barco en el mes de octubre a Algeciras, largarlos al campo 2 o 3 meses, agarrarlos en febrero, tenerlos listos en marzo, para que los patrones de Europa vinieran a jugar en el mes de mayo antes de que empiecen las temporadas en su país. En aquel momento fuimos a hablar con Enrique Zobel, y nos ofreció comprar Ayala, las dos canchas de abajo, pero tenía un administrador que no nos puso las cosas fáciles.

Tu eres de esos que puedes exigir. El saldo positivo es que me encanta. Creo que he podido darle a mi hijo lo que yo no tuve, la organización, los buenos caballos. Todo lo que me hubiera encantado haber tenido y no puedo. Me gusta decidir la cría, con que yegua hacemos embriones, como van evolucionando los caballos nuevos y todo eso tengo la suerte de hacerlo con la familia Rueda. ¿Qué porcentaje de tu tiempo se lleva el polo?
Entonces empecé a buscar otro sitio. Iñigo Vallejo Nágera que tenía aquí su casa, su caballeriza y su cancha, me ofreció el terreno de al lado. Cuando compré el terreno y empecé a desarrollar la cancha, puso en venta esto y lo compré.
Te diría que espero que cada día más. Mi aspiración es retirarme a los 65, que es una norma del grupo familiar. Y tengo 59. El polo me ocupa el tiempo de pensar: pensar en Dos Lunas, pensar la cría, pensar padrillos, pensar remates…
Lamentablemente, en el momento en que el proyecto de Gonzalo empezaba a tomar forma, Tanoira murió en Bs As, y quedé un poco huérfano en el mundo del polo. Por suerte el mismo me había puesto en

Cuando son cuatro amigos que le ponen mucha onda. En el nivel del Abierto o los torneos de Europa o EE UU muy competitivos no lo se, creo que el esponsor está siempre detrás del resultado.
El polo es divertido en Argentina, el polo de estancia hasta el nivel de la Cámara.
Cuándo no hay resultados, cuando se pierde, cuando el equipo no funciona, se piensa: “bueno, nos divertimos esta temporada…” o “esto así no va” aunque en el camino caigan amigos? No he estado en esa tesitura, porque no hemos tenido temporadas desastrosas. Pero yo tengo un esponsor que trato de mantener, y las presiones pueden venir, porque los patrones quieren ganar, levantar la copa, quieren resultados. ¿Crees que el futuro del Polo está totalmente en manos de los esponsors? Yo creo que va a haber dos categorías: El polito de estancia, amateur y muy respetable. Luego el polo mediano de 8 a 20 goles que es un polo de Patrón pero que no necesita esponsors.

Y luego hay un polo de alta competición como el de Palm Beach o Inglaterra y ya Sotogrande, donde eres un super patró n, como en el caso de Ellerston, Las Monjitas, Lechuza y algunos otros o tienen que salir a conseguir esponsors. Según tu óptica ¿Cuál es el futuro del Polo español? Complicado. Futuro tiene porque hay muchos chicos jugando. Pero se dirige a
Anunciada Ella es una fanática. Mucho más loca por los caballos que todos nosotros. Cuando la conocí ella saltaba, nos fuimos a vivir a Inglaterra y dejó y vendió su caballo de salto al nacer los tres chicos, pero siempre quería volver a saltar. Yo le decía que tenía que hacer doma clásica y ella insistía en que eso era aburrido, pero como es germánica empezó a probar y se volvió loca; es su vida. A otras mujeres les gustan las joyas o las fiestas, ella es muy metódica, se levanta por la mañana trabaja aquí con Joaquín, es casi imposible que viaje o se vaya a ningún lado, y probablemente a la tarde, vuelve a seguir trabajando.

Sotogrande está armado para un alto nivel de competición. ¿Qué le falta según tu criterio? Las canchas están, la infraestructura está. El Club ha hecho buenas caballerizas, Ayala y nosotros le damos infraestructura. Si te soy sincero, le falta un David Stirling, un hombre que sepa mucho de Polo, trabajando día y noche y que pueda llamar a los patrones del mundo y los pueda invitar a jugar aca.
Si sueñas con lo que te gustaría que logre Pascual, ¿con qué sueñas? Sueño verlo jugar el abierto y que lo haga bien. Jugar con amigos y hacer un buen papel. Y si fuera profesional ¿Con quién te gustaría verlo jugar? Con el que le pague bien!... contesta entre risas.
Me duele ver Abril y Mayo casi sin polo. Sin desmerecer en ningún momento a quienes hacen la tarea, pero me refiero a alguien que tenga un pull con las grandes organizaciones.
Me gustaría que pueda encontrar una organización con patrones como Camilo, Vargas, Packer... gente seria y con visión de futuro con la que pueda crecer. m

Aiken, South Carolina’s 302 Polo Club and New Bridge Polo Club hosted three 16-goal tournaments this fall.The first two, the USPA Northrup Knox Cup and the USPA Continental Cup fielded five teams: Bendabout, MetalTek, Mt. Brilliant, Taylor BMW & Winfield. The third tournament, the USPA Heritage Cup had four teams, Mt. Brilliant, Taylor BMW, Winfield, and Cooper Home and Stable. The Knox Cup began on September 18, then had a few soggy days with nearly six inches of rain in places. But Aiken’s sandy soil and the well-managed fields at 302 and New Bridge let the tournament continue. It was Mt. Brilliant and Bendabout who met for a thrilling final at New Bridge field two on October 5.Mt. Brilliant dominated the first half, holding a three point lead at half time.Bendabout rallied back, in the sixth to win it 12 to 11.Arellano’s Best Playing Pony “Dreamer,” a big and very athletic gray mare played the sixth, while Best Playing Pony for an amateur went to Gillian Johnston’s fast red mare “Laguna.” MVP Professional for the day went to Tomas Obregon for his tenacious defense, and MVP Amateur to Bo Goodman.

The Continental Cup began October 5 with the same five teams. This time it was Winfield who edged out Mt. Brilliant to face Bendabout in the final on Oct. 23. As in the previous final, Bendabout had fallen behind at halftime this time by six. Winfield ’s Escapite brothers came out strong and fast in the first half, to lead 8 to 2. Johnston’s speed, Arellano’s nine-goal skill, and the diligence of Uys and Morrison came through for Bendabout to make a come back in the second half. A penalty four conversion by Arellano in the last seconds tied the game.The crowd could see and feel the intensity of both teams in the overtime period. With Winfield earning two spot hit penalties, and holding defense strong, it was Bendabout who managed to end the sudden death period at 2:04. The final score was 12 –11. MVP Pro for the game was Whistle Uys, while Amateur went to Rick Hartnett. Best Playing Pony Professional was Pelon Escapite’s “Olivia” and Rick Hartnett’s “Candelario” was Amateur Best Playing Pony. It was Taylor BMW’s turn to shine in the USPA Heritage Cup. With a 2-1 record, they met Cooper Home and Stable, also 2-1, in the final. After losing to Winfield
in overtime, then beating Mt. Brilliant, also in overtime, Cooper Home and Stable was fine tuned. Taylor BMW was victorious in the Heritage Cup final, 1210, led by MVP Tommy Biddle. Biddle’s “Naca” was Professional Best Playing Pony, while “Dream Catcher” owned and played by Barb Uskup was Amateur Best Playing Pony. This wrapped up an extremely competitive and exciting 16 goal season this fall. With new teams as well as its consistent participants, Aiken continues to thrive as a host for both spring and fall polo in the US. Including the three 16 goals, there was a remarkable 17 polo tournaments in Aiken this fall! There were three 16 goals, two 12 goals, three 8 goals, three 6 goals, two four goals, three concurrent women’s tournaments and one arena tournament! Aiken has the pleasure of offering a mild climate and outstanding footing year round, with a variety of levels, and over 50 polo fields. A continuación hubo unos días pasados por agua con lluvia intensa. Aiken tiene la fortuna de contar con un clima suave y una base excelente durante todo el año, con diferentes niveles, y más de 50 campos de polo. But much has changed this year, except for the star’s gentle and good-natured manner. There are new colours, a new organisation, new teammates and new dreams (or are they the same ones?). With the same stealth with which he moves on horseback, the ‘Trenquelauquense’ keeps a watch on Palermo without raising his voice. “The Open is unique, I’m not giving anything new away. I have been in contact with it since I was a kid, when I came from Trenque Lauquen to see some matches. And then I experienced it on the field. This year is a year of change, for me and for many players. With the exception of La Aguada, who haven’t touched their team, the rest have re-manned, so it’s a time of readjustment...” La Dolfina, your team, had a good experience in the Tortugas Open: you displayed a solid team game until the sixth chukka of the final... Yes, we played better for much of the game against Ellerstina, but we had two awful chukkas, we lost our concentration and they turned it round. It’s all part of polo. The important thing is to know that these things do not have to happen again... At Hurlingham you took revenge (it was 19-18), though the match had some things in common with the Tortugas game: you dominated for much of it, but Ellerstina’s fightback led to another incredible final...

Perhaps unconsciously you relax a bit because of the lead, and evidently against Ellerstina this can be dangerous. But my feeling is that, though we have only played a few matches, the team is developing to tackle the most important event: the Open. If there is one thing that this man born on April 14, 1981, in Trenque Lauquen, Buenos Aires province, transmits, it is that his ten-goal handicap held in Argentina, the United States and England seems to have its counterpart in everyday life. It is not the impression of this journalist, who also notes the young man’s impeccable credentials: straightforward, austere, respectful, a friend to his friends, shy of publicity, a family man... The whole polo world says it too. Just listen to Santiago Trotz: “This kid is incredible. A phenomenon. He’s almost too modest. I’m not a friend of his, but I can see how he operates in life: he has an extraordinary simplicity. And he’s also a phenomenon as a polo player, but he will tell you: ‘No, it’s the team, it’s all of us...’ He never makes himself out to be the star...” That’s the way it is. It must be Trenque Lauquen, his childhood spent cycling to school in La Quinta, his first swings of the mallet with his father and uncles, the Jauretches. Nero may not have a famous last name, but he has something that is not in his documents: TALENT.
Yes, but fortunately it went our way. Matches against Ellerstina are like that: they are a very good team. But I was happy with that victory, beyond the close final, because we played well. And it’s good to have lifted the cup before Palermo starts.
He took it to France back in 1999 and started to make a name for himself year after year, until he was invited to the Cathedral of Polo by Indios Chapaleufú in 2004 as a substitute. He ended up playing due to Marcos Heguy’s injury, the next year he established himself and he remained in the team with Bautista, Marcos and Horacito until 2007.

Then I spent three years with Ellerstina, which is an incredible organisation, very professional. And now I’ve gone to the other side, with Adolfito, who needs no description as a polo player. Yes, I’m a lucky man”, he says. Sharing the moment when you joined the top flight with the Heguys, when you were still unknown around here, was important in your career... I don’t think I could have been more fortunate; starting out at the top and with Chapa I. It’s what every kid dreamed of, and I was able to do it. For instance, they instilled in me a passion for playing at Palermo, which is something no amount of money can buy; and that togetherness with people which I had never experienced. The team’s connection with the fans was incredible, even at times, like the first year, when it didn’t go well for us. Chapa I taught me that it’s not just about winning Palermo; it’s also about playing the game and enjoying the moment. And what has Ellerstina left you with? At Ellerstina everything was geared towards winning the Open. We would spend the whole year thinking about and working towards that objective, and we did it. I learned everything about the organisation, which is spectacular, seeing how they work with the ponies, from a young age until the finishing touches. Ellerstina was something else. When one hears so much praise for the Pieres organisation, it’s like the team has an advantage before it even plays. I think it’s because Ellerstina has been a big organisation for a long time. When Gonzalo senior achieved this, his sons,

who are great players, were able to take advantage of it. And that makes it an extremely strong club. Though you have only recently joined La Dolfina, are there some aspects in common between these organisations? I think Adolfito’s organisation is incredible. Even though he started out on his own, he has a wonderful club, big, and the passion that Adolfito puts into the horses makes it resemble Ellerstina somewhat. Let’s not forget that Adolfito comes from there, and many of his horses have Ellerstina blood. You have played with Bautista, with Facundo and with Adolfito; what can you tell us about them? Ha! Nothing... I’ve been so lucky to play in the same team as those players.
Yes, I was six years old. The first thing I remember about that team was a final that they won against Centauros by something like 20 goals to 11, with Alfonso Pieres and Pite Merlos playing for Centauros. I remember going on the field and seeing the connection between the team and the crowd. It was unique, it hasn’t happened since. I joined the team after the guys had been through a lot and suffered big blows. One thing that never changed was the spirit of enjoyment and a passion for people.
Discipline is an issue... It’s difficult for the referees. It’s a tough job: the reality is that players shouldn’t say anything, but sometimes it’s hard to avoid. From the stands, you seem like a calm player.
In another interview you said that as a child Bautista was your idol.
I try not to speak, but sometimes I can’t keep quiet. I don’t know... you’re in a final and a bit of adrenaline is pumping. But I’m someone who makes an effort not to talk to the referees.
Yes, seeing him on a horse without even moving, I’d think: “I want to be like him”. And I felt the same about the whole team. As a boy I was a Chapa I fan.
Do players complain a lot in Argentina or is it the same elsewhere? Or is it just the Argentineans that complain overseas?

I think there is less and less complaining here, with the ‘Law of Silence’ regulation. We’re improving in this area. I believe, simply, that sometimes you have to be a bit tolerant if someone says something. Sometimes it can just come out, it’s a game with a lot of tension...
As far as ‘Bauti’ is concerned it goes without saying: the good thing about him is his talent, his riding, how he gets the most out of the horses... And as I always acknowledge: I arrived when the Heguys were, not exactly on their last legs, but it wasn’t when the four brothers were there; they were unbeatable and were tired of playing in the Open. But the message that they always gave me was to go to Palermo, play and enjoy myself. And if you lose, well another will win, what can you do?
Adolfito is a crack polo player, one of a kind if you look at the things he has achieved from a young age. And Facundo too: his strength, his ball control and his speed... The two of them are the best in the world.
You were a small boy when the twins and Marcos, together with Alex Garraham, won the first Open...
I spent three years with Facundo and yes, he is a team player. And I am just starting with Adolfito, but I can say that for the time being ours is also a team game. Obviously you have to get the most out of two phenomenal players. At Ellerstina we would also get people away from Facu so he could play.
In the polo world there is a majority view that Facundo is more of a team player and Adolfito does more by himself. As someone who has played with both of them, is this true?
I always try to enjoy the moment and the polo. And to have a good time. Polo is not life or death. Of course I like to win, but there are more important things La Bocha by SnoopyPolo 38

Juanma, let’s talk about the Argentine referees. What is their standard like? Their standard is good. Polo is growing fast and things are changing in order to improve. But there is still progress to be made. And these things to
Where in the world do you most like playing? I like England and Sotogrande a lot. In England I have a great time. The competition is very good, there’s the Gold and Queen’s Cups, the organisation is very good, the fields improve every year. And being 40 minutes from London makes it even more attractive. And Sotogrande, which is in August and lasts a month, is like a European end-of-season, it has beaches... it’s a good programme. Is Sotogrande where the most relaxed polo is played? Among the places abroad, yes. It helps that the Spanish have a vibe that is more similar to ours: they go to bed late, go out to eat late... In England they close the kitchen at 9 pm. How much pressure is there playing for La Dolfina, which before the start of the season was already dubbed the ‘Dream Team’? Yes, they have given us that label... But it doesn’t feel like anything special. Everyone who plays has pressure, in some way. I always try to enjoy the moment and
MARTÍN NERO the polo. And to have a good time. Polo is not life or death. Of course I like to win, but there are more important things. I’m crossing my fingers, but losing a loved one or suffering pain, that is hard. But this is just a match or a tournament. You try to do your best and enjoy yourself, and at the end one team wins and the other loses, but it doesn’t go beyond that. After a match I go home, I don’t stay caught up in it. And in my everyday life I try to share as much as possible with my wife, Jose, and my old friends. I’m a person who thinks you have to be comfortable where you are. If I’m not enjoying myself, I’ll chose another space. And what is your earth lead so that you are not plugged into polo 24/7? The countryside in Trenque Lauquen, where I’m from, is good for switching off. Although my organisation is there, I’m near my people and my friends. Making plans with Jose also helps. And, though it’s not for long, because the overseas seasons are long, I have always made sure I can go on holidays and stop thinking about polo. This year we escaped to the South: last year we went to Cariló, to the beach. And New Year’s parties a good reason to travel. That week, plus around 10 days at the beach, are a way to completely switch off. By January 15 I am already starting the Palm Beach season... And how do you enjoy yourself with your friends? What do you talk about other than what they ask you about the polo? Football is always a subject that brings us together: I love it. I’m a Boca fan, of course. Going to the games once in a while or watching them on the television with friends. And the same with the national side... the other day we went to watch ArgentinaChile in the qualifiers. Do you become the typical Argentina fan? Shouting, an insult or two... No, nothing like that. I’m very calm and docile. We all have our opinions because it’s inevitable, but there’s none of that. Do you play? I played as a boy, but not now. I had a problem with my knee so I gave it up... And I was very bad, so it was best to stop trying. And doing a contact sport can expose you to injuries... Yes, you can do it, but it’s a bit of a risk. If possible it’s best to avoid it. Have you planned when you will retire? I don’t have a time in mind. I look after myself pretty well, I exercise, because I would like to play for many years. I love polo, I want to keep playing for as long as I can and my interest in horses grows. The good thing about this sport is that when you can’t play anymore you can stay in the scene by breeding horses. And the older you are and the more experience you have the better. Hay un Juan Martín Nero metido de lleno en este sueño llamado Palermo, paraíso o infierno, depende para quien, que conoce gramilla a gramilla. Por esos territorios únicos anduvo peleando la gloria máxima, cuando dejó su sello con Ellerstina en dos Abiertos de copa en alto y el bonus track de la Triple Corona de 2010. Pero muchas cosas han cambiado en este año, salvo el andar campechano y manso del protagonista. Hay otros colores, otra organización, otros compañeros y otros sueños (¿o el mismo?). Con igual sigilo con el que se mueve arriba del caballo, el trenquelauquense se anima a espiar Palermo sin levantar la voz: “El Abierto es único, no descubro nada. Lo he vivido desde los tiempos de pibe, cuando venía de Trenque Lauquen a mirar algunos partidos. Y después lo comprobé en la cancha. Este es un año de cambios, para mí y para muchos jugadores. Salvo La Aguada, que no movió su equipo, el resto se ha rearmado, así que son tiempos de reacomodamiento…” La Dolfina, tu equipo, tuvo una experiencia fuerte en el Abierto de Tortugas: mostró una sólida imagen de equipo hasta el sexto chukker de la final… Sí, jugamos mejor buena parte del partido ante Ellerstina, pero tuvimos dos chukkers fatales, nos desconcentramos y lo dieron vuelta. Forma parte del polo. Lo importante es saber que esas cosas no tienen que volver a pasar… En Hurlingham se tomaron revancha (fue 19-18), aunque el partido tuvo algunos puntos en común con el de Tortugas: ustedes dominando buena parte, pero la arremetida de Ellerstina volvió a dibujar otro final increíble… Sí, pero por suerte fue para nosotros. Es que los partidos contra Ellerstina van a ser así: ellos son un muy buen equipo.

Pero me dejó contento este triunfo, más allá de lo apretado del final, porque jugamos bien. Y está bueno haber levantado la Copa antes del arranque de Palermo. Entraron al séptimo chukker con cinco goles de ventaja, pero volvieron a quedarse… Sí… Son cosas a corregir, por supuesto. Tal vez uno inconscientemente afloja un poco por la ventaja, y evidentemente ante Ellerstina puede ser peligroso. Pero siento que a pesar de los pocos partidos que llevamos el equipo está creciendo para afrontar lo más importante: el Abierto. Si hay algo que transmite este hombre nacido el 14 de abril de 1981 en Trenque Lauquen, provincia de Buenos Aires, es que ese 10 de hándicap que sostiene en Argentina, Estados Unidos e Inglaterra parece tener su correlato en la vida diaria. No es la impresión de este periodista, que igualmente observa las intachables credenciales del muchacho: simple, austero, respetuoso, amigo de sus amigos, huidizo de la exposición, familiero… Lo dice, sí, el ambiente del polo. Escúchelo a Santiago Trotz: “Este pibe es increíble. Un fenómeno. Es como si se pasara de modesto. Mirá que no soy amigo de él, pero veo cómo se maneja en la vida: tiene una sencillez que apabulla. Y además, es un fenómeno como polista, pero él te dice: ‘No, es el equipo, somos todos…’. Nunca se pone en protagonista…” Es así. Debe ser Trenque Lauquen, su infancia en bicicleta para ir del colegio a la quinta, los primeros taqueos junto a su padre y sus tíos, los Jauretche. Nero no tiene portación de apellido, pero lleva algo que no está en sus documentos: TALENTO.
Lo llevó a Francia, allá por el año 1999, se hizo empezar a conocer año a año, hasta que una invitación de Indios Chapaleufú lo trajo en 2004 a la Catedral, como suplente. Terminó jugando por la lesión de Marcos Heguy, se consolidó al año siguiente y se mantuvo en el equipo de Bautista, Marcos y Horacito hasta 2007. “Lo tomo como un afortunado de haber sido partícipe de Chapa I, por la historia del equipo, por el orgullo de haber jugado con los Heguy y por haber comprobado lo respetados que son. Después estuve tres años en Ellerstina, que es una organización impresionante, muy profesional. Y ahora caer del otro lado, con Adolfito, de quien sería una obviedad decir qué es como polista. Sí, soy un afortunado”, dice. El haber compartido con los Heguy en el momento en que te instalaste en el alto hándicap, cuando acá eras poco conocido, fue importante en tu carrera… Yo creo que más suerte no pude haber tenido; con haber arrancado en el alto y con Chapa I. Creo que todo chico lo soñaba, y yo lo pude hacer. A mí me transmitieron mucho, por ejemplo, la pasión de jugar en Palermo, que no hay plata que te pague eso; y esa comunión con la gente que nunca la viví. El ida y vuelta entre el equipo y la hinchada fue algo increíble, aún en los momentos –como el primer año- en que no nos fue bien. Chapa I me enseñó que no sólo es ganar Palermo, sino salir a jugar el partido y disfrutar ese momento. ¿Y qué te dejó Ellerstina?

En Ellerstina todo estaba organizado para ganar el Abierto. Allí fue estar todo el año pensando y trabajando para ese objetivo, que se logró. Aprendí todo lo que es la organización, que es espectacular, ver cómo se trabajan los caballos, desde la cría hasta los remates. Ellerstina fue otra cosa. Cuando una escucha elogiar tanto de la organización de los Pieres, es como que parece que el equipo arrancara con ventaja antes de jugar. Lo que creo que pasa es que Ellerstina es una organización grande desde hace tiempo. Cuando Gonzalo padre logró eso pudieron aprovecharlo sus hijos, que son grandes jugadores. Y eso lo hace un club fuertísimo. Hay diferentes versiones de tu partida de Ellerstina. ¿Podemos saber cual es la verdadera? Es simple: yo había arreglado con Ellerstina jugar sólo por tres temporadas, porque ellos proyectaban incorporar a Nicolás al equipo. Cuando se cumplieron esos tres años, sabía que Nico se subía al equipo y yo tenía que buscarme club. Eso estuvo acordado desde siempre y eso sucedió. No hay nada raro en mi alejamiento. Terminamos muy bien. Hoy la
relación con los Pieres es perfecta. Si bien es reciente tu paso a La Dolfina, ¿hay algunos puntos en común entre esas organizaciones? Yo creo que la organización de Adolfito también es impresionante. Si bien arrancó solo, tiene un club lindísimo, grande, y la pasión que Adolfito le pone a los caballos hace que se parezca un poco a Ellerstina. No hay que olvidar que Adolfito viene de ahí, y muchos de sus caballos vienen con la sangre de Ellerstina. Jugaste con Bautista, con Facundo y con Adolfito, ¿qué hay de ese trío? Ja, nada… Un afortunado total compartir equipo con esos jugadores. Lo de Bauti no lo tengo ni que decir: lo bueno que es, su talento, la equitación, cómo le saca el jugo a sus caballos… Y como siempre reconozco: yo llego a los Heguy no diría en su etapa de vuelta, pero no fue la época en que estaban los cuatro hermanos, eran imbatibles y se habían cansado de ganar Abiertos. Pero el mensaje que siempre me transmitieron fue el de entrar a Palermo, jugar y disfrutar. Y si se pierde, bueno, gana otro equipo, qué vas a hacer… Vos eras un nene cuando los mellizos y Marcos –junto con Alex Ga-
rraham- ganaron el primer Abierto… Sí, tenía seis años. Lo primero que me acuerdo de ese equipo fue una final que le ganan a Centauros, como 20 a 11, que en Centauros jugaban Alfonso Pieres y Pite Merlos. Me acuerdo de haber estado en la cancha y ver la comunión de equipo con la gente. Ha sido único, no ha vuelto a pasar. Yo me sumé al equipo después de que a los chicos le pasaran muchas cosas y sufrieran golpes grandes. Lo que no cambió fue el espíritu de disfrutar y la pasión con la gente. Leyendo alguna nota que te hicieron, decías que tu ídolo de chico fue Bautista. Sí, verlo arriba del caballo y que ni se movía, era como decir: “Quiero ser como él”. Y el equipo igual. De chico fui hincha de Chapa I. Sigamos comparando… Adolfito es un crack, un fuera de molde, las cosas que consiguió desde temprana edad. Y Facundo también: rescato su fuerza, el taqueo y la velocidad… Los dos son los mejores del mundo. Una mirada mayoritaria del mundo del polo dice que Facundo juega

más en equipo y Adolfito hace más cosas por sí. Para alguien que ha jugado con los dos, ¿es así? Yo con Facundo estuve tres años y, sí, juega en equipo. Y con Adolfito estoy empezando, pero puedo decir que por ahora el juego que estamos haciendo es en equipo también. Obviamente hay que sacarle provecho al juego de dos fenómenos. En Ellerstina también le sacábamos gente a Facu para que él se la juegue. Juanma, hablemos del referato argentino. ¿Cuál es el nivel? El nivel es bueno. El polo está creciendo mucho y se están cambiando cosas para mejorar. Pero todavía se puede avanzar más. En esas cosas a mejorar, ¿ves más razones reglamentarias del juego o cuestiones disciplinarias? Y… el disciplinario es un tema…Se les hace difícil a los referís, pobres. Es un laburo difícil: la realidad es que no habría que hablar nada, pero a veces es complicado evitarlo. Desde la tribuna, se te ve un jugador tranquilo. Trato de no hablar, a veces no puedo. Qué se yo…estás en una final y por ahí te salta un poco la adrenalina. Pero soy de los que me esfuerzo por no hablarles a los referís. En Argentina se protesta mucho o jugando afuera es la misma historia? ¿O son sólo los argentinos los que protestan afuera? Creo que acá se protesta cada vez menos, con esta reglamentación de la “Ley del silencio”. En eso estamos mejorando. En-

tiendo, simplemente, que a veces hay que ser un poquito tolerante si alguien dice algo. A veces se te puede escapar, este es un juego de mucha tensión… ¿Cuál es el lugar en el mundo en el que más te gusta jugar? Me gusta mucho Inglaterra y Sotogrande. En Inglaterra la paso muy bien, sí. La competencia es muy buena, están la Copa de Oro y la de la Reina, la organización es muy buena, cada año se mejoran más las canchas. Y estar a 40 minutos de Londres lo hace todavía más atractivo. Y Sotogrande, que es en agosto y dura un mes, es como un final de temporada europea, tiene playas…es un buen programa. ¿Sotogrande es el lugar donde se juega el polo más distendido? De los lugares de afuera, sí. Ayuda que los españoles tienen una onda más parecida a la nuestra: se acuestan tarde, se sale a tomar algo tarde… En Inglaterra, a las 9 de la noche te cierran la cocina. ¿Cuánta presión es jugar hoy en La Dolfina, que antes del arranque de temporada ya tenía el mote del “Equipo de los sueños”?
mucho tiempo, porque las temporadas del exterior son largas- siempre me organizo para tomarme vacaciones y no pensar en polo. Este año hicimos una escapada al Sur: el año pasado fuimos a Cariló, a hacer playa. Y las fiestas de fin de año también sirven para viajar. Esa semana, más unos 10 días en la playa son de un desconecte total. Es que el 15 de enero ya estoy empezando la temporada en Palm Beach… Y cómo es el disfrute con tus amigos? ¿De qué cosas hablan, más allá de que te pregunten de polo? El fútbol siempre es un tema convocante: a mí me encanta. Soy hincha de Boca, por supuesto. De ir alguna que otra vez a la cancha, o si no verlo por televisión con mis amigos. Igual con la Selección…el otro día fuimos a ver Argentina-Chile, por las Eliminatorias. Te transformás en el típico hincha argentino? Gritos, algún que otro insulto…. No, nada de eso. Muy tranquilo. Soy manso…Todos opinamos, porque es inevitable, pero no pasa de eso. ¿Lo jugás?
Sí, nos colgaron ese cartel… Pero no lo siento como algo especial. Todo el que juega tiene presiones, a su manera. Lo que siempre intento es de disfrutar los momentos y el juego. Y de pasarla bien. El polo no es de vida o muerte. Por supuesto que me gusta ganar, pero hay cosas más importantes. Cruzo los dedos, pero perder a un ser querido o sufrir cosas dolorosas sí que es bravo. Pero esto no deja de ser un partido o un torneo, en el que uno entra a dar lo mejor y a disfrutar, y al final uno gana y el otro pierde, pero no pasa de eso. Yo, termino un partido y me voy a casa, no me quedo enroscado. Y en mi vida diaria trato de compartir lo que más pueda con mi mujer, Jose, y con mis amigos de siempre. Yo soy de los que piensan que hay que estar cómodo en un lugar. Si no lo paso bien, elijo otro espacio. ¿Y cuál es tu cable a tierra para no estar 24 por 24 enchufado con el polo? El campo en Trenque Lauquen, de donde soy, es un buen desenchufe. Si bien allí tengo mi organización, estoy cerca de mi gente y mis amigos. Hacer programas con Jose, también ayuda. Y –si bien no es

Además, hacer un deporte de contacto te expone a lesiones… Y, sí…lo podés hacer, pero también arriesgás un poco. Si se puede, es mejor evitarlo. ¿Proyectás hasta cuándo vas a jugar? No tengo un tiempo. Sí me cuido bastante, hago gimnasia, porque me gustaría jugar muchos años. Me encanta el polo, lo quiero seguir jugando hasta que pueda, y los caballos me gustan cada vez más. Lo bueno que tiene este deporte es que – cuando ya no puedas jugarlo- podés seguir adentro del ambiente haciendo caballos. Y cuanto más grande sos, más experiencia sumás, mejor. t is difficult to be friends with the referees.
Asking is almost a betrayal.
Difficult for this friendship not to be hindered by the events that take place on the field.
It was an invitation: to eat, to chat, to share a sunny midday on the Mediterranean coast, with the Rock of Gibraltar in the background and to take some pictures without asking questions.
Some seasons, the shorter ones, they all seem to come and go together. Because they live in the same place, work at the same time, share their days off or simply because they stay as a group, they see themselves as: ‘THE REFEREES’.
They are invited everywhere, but it seems that they are unable to shake off their identity as authority figures on the field. As a player, getting too close to them is uncomfortable, confronting them is possible but not advisable, and avoiding both things is, at the very least, impolite. It is perhaps an uncomfortable situation for both parties, the referees and the refereed, which is disguised behind jokes, barbecues and golf, for a change of setting. The neutrals are the ones who invite them, to include them in dinners, outings and meetings so that, on tournament nights at least, they can forget about their stripy uniforms and their on-field authority. As one of these neutrals, our magazine decides to invite them to a lunch in the middle of the Sotogrande season, at the Cucurucho Beach Club, in a relaxed atmosphere...
But it’s inevitable. These gentlemen who observe with their eyes what happens on the field and who are judged by what thousands of eyes see, are always questioned. When they do it right, nobody sees it. When they do it wrong, everyone does. There is a certain tense atmosphere at this stage of the season, which is revealed in questions: “Who judges them?” ask the players. “Who tells them when they have done something wrong? When do they think they’ve done well?”, they continue to ask; “the person who pays me makes demands on me, and if I do something wrong I’m questioned, what about them? How are they qualified? Do they watch the videos? Do they think they are paid enough? Should they have better horses? How do they establish common criteria on the field between two people of different nationalities?” “How do you choose to be an umpire?” they insist on asking. And that is when in this cordial lunch, at this moment of goodwill, the questions creep in. Those who ask them are anonymous, but those who answer not so much.
But... How do we avoid asking questions? How do we sit the eight men who everyone is talking about around a table and ask them NOTHING about their work?

s difícil ser amigo de los réferis. Difícil que esa amistad no se vea entorpecida por los sucesos que ocurren dentro de la cancha. En algunas temporadas, las más cortas, por sus características, parecen ir y venir todos juntos. Porque viven en un mismo lugar, trabajan en un mismo horario, comparten los días libres, o simplemente porque se mueven en grupo, se ven así, como: “LOS REFERIS”.
Se los invita a todos los sitios, pero no parecen poder perder esa identidad de autoridades dentro de la cancha. Si se es jugador, acercarse demasiado es incómodo, confrontar es posible y no prometedor, y evitar ambas cosas es al menos, descortés. Tal vez sea una situación incómoda para ambas partes la “refereada” y la “referida”, que se disimula en bromas, asados y golf, para cambiar de escenario. Los neutrales, son los que se ocupan de invitarlos, de incluirlos en cenas, salidas y reuniones para que al menos por las noches de torneo, se olviden de su uniforme a rayas y su autoridad dentro de la cancha. Entre esos neutrales, nuestra Revista, decide invitarlos a un almuerzo en medio de la temporada de Sotogrande, en el Club de Playa El Cucurucho, en una atmósfera distendida… Pero, pero, pero… ¿Cómo se hace para evitar preguntar? ¿Cómo se sienta alrededor de una mesa a los 8 hombres de los que todo el mundo habla y no se les pregunta NADA sobre su trabajo? Es casi una traición preguntar. Era una invitación: a comer, a charlar, a compartir un mediodía de sol en la costa del Mediterráneo, con el Peñón de Gibraltar al fondo y sacarles algunas fotos sin preguntas. Pero es inevitable. Estos señores que miran con sus ojos lo que pasa dentro de la cancha y se los juzga por lo que ven los ojos de miles, son siempre cuestionados. Cuando lo hacen bien nadie lo ve. Cuando lo hacen mal, lo ve todo el mundo. Hay un cierto clima tenso a esta altura de la temporada, que se trasluce en preguntas: “¿Quién los juzga a ellos?” preguntan los jugadores. “¿Quién les dice si lo han hecho mal?” “Cuándo creen que lo han hecho bien? siguen preguntando; “A mi el que me paga me exige, y si lo hago mal soy cuestionado, y a ellos? ¿Cómo se capacitan? ¿Ven los videos?” “Creen que se les paga suficiente? ¿ Deberían tener mejores caballos?” “¿Cómo unifican los criterios dentro de la cancha entre dos que tienen distintas nacionalidades?” “¿Por qué se elige ser réferi?” insisten en preguntar. Y entonces es, cuando a ese almuerzo de cordialidad, y a ese rato de distensión en lo profesional, se cuelan las preguntas. Anónimos los que preguntan, no tanto, los que contestan. Between the referees and the players it is best to have the least dialogue possible. Respecting the fouls without objections, avoiding controversy and arguments with the players. Entre réferi y jugador es ideal el menor diálogo posible. Respetar los fallos de manera inobjetable evitando polémicas y discusiones con los jugadores.
Though there is just one set of laws for polo, there are situations in which pairs of referees must establish common criteria to give their fouls. This happens, for instance, when the referees on the field are of different nationalities; it is their responsibility to adapt to each other. Si bien el reglamento del polo es uno, hay situaciones en la cuales las parejas arbítrales deben unir criterios para dar sus fallos, esto sucede por ejemplo cuando en cancha los referís pertenecen a distintas nacionalidades, son ellos mismos los encargados de adaptarse el uno al otro.
The referees have been involved in polo as players and when they become ex polo players refereeing is an opportunity to remain involved in this sport which they are so passionate about. Some of them do it as a personal challenge and also because they need work. New referees have to pass theory and practical courses. Having got through this, as part of their training they start overseeing low-goal matches and when they gain experience they oversee matches at increasingly high levels. Following several weeks of polo in the Californian paradise, the final of the Pacific Coast Open brought a well deserved close the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club season. The duel between: Lucchese: John Muse, Julio Gracida, Jeff Blake and Adolfo Cambiaso, and Piaget: Melisa Ganzi, Juan Bollini, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Jason Crowder, was a spectacle of extremely high sporting quality. Piaget opened the scoring with three goals in the first chukka to take an early lead. The team looked confident and sure of its strategy. Miguel Novilllo Astrada organized his troops, with Crowder assured in the goal area and Juan Bollini a ‘wall’ in defence.

Thanks to the fantastic support of the public and the sponsors, the quality of polo is reaching extraordinary heights, which only raises the expectations for the beginning of the 2012 season. m
However, by the end of the first half, the scoreboard read 7-7. The match was anyone’s. The tension at the tethering posts grew and the crowds were anxious to see who would win this big final. The final chukka got underway with Lucchese in the lead on 10-9. Following some excellent ball control from Julio Gracida, who scored a final goal with just 30 seconds left in the sixth chukka, and some incredible play from Adolfito Cambiaso, the match ended on 11 goals to 9. The clash between the two teams exceeded all expectations and both sides played above their 20-goal handicaps. All of the players did what was necessary to ensure the crowd enjoyed a phenomenal end to the season. Once again, John Muse’s team climbed to the top of the podium to receive the Pacific Coast Open cup. Adolfito Cambiaso, the best polo player in the world and the star of the final, went away with the Most Valuable Player award, while Miguel Novillo Astrada’s pony, ‘Chaleco’, won the prize for the best horse. Though Piaget and Lucchese were the teams that qualified as finalists for this last tournament, over the season any of the six participating sides could have been candidates for the final. For l

Tras semanas de polo en el paraíso californiano, la final de la Pacific Coast Open le da un cierre bien merecido a la temporada en el Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. El duelo entre: Lucchese: John Muse, Julio Gracida, Jeff Blake y Adolfo Cambiaso y Piaget: Melisa Ganzi, Juan Bollini, Miguel Novillo Astrada y Jason Crowder, fue un espectáculo de altísimo nivel deportivo. Piaget abrió el marcador con 3 goles en el primer chukker para marcar la diferencia inicial. El equipo se mostró confiado y seguro de su estrategia. Miguel Novillo Astrada organizó el equipo de tal manera que Crowder era punto asegurado cuando se aproximaba la zona de los mimbres y Juan Bollini, un “muro” en la defensa. Sin embargo, al finalizar la primera mitad del partido, el tablero marcaba 7 – 7. Partido para cualquiera. La tensión en
los palenques se sentía cada vez más y las tribunas ya ansiosas para que se definiera esta gran final. Entraron al último chukker 10 – 9, Lucchese arriba. Tras un excelente taqueo de Julio Gracida que marcó un último gol cuando entraron en los últimos 30 segundos del sexto chukker y una increíble actuación de Adolfito Cambiaso, el partido finalizó 11 a 9.

The voice cannot be separated from feelings, and the next day the PRESS extols strengths, hiding weaknesses within their statements and leaving those SECRET PASSWORDS that open A DOOR TO THE POSSIBLE. “THIS TITLE PROVED WHAT PEOPLE SAY” “WE KNOW WE CAN BEAT THEM” In both cases, neither horses nor system, and certainly not the loss of a THROW-IN, THE BOWL-INS OR POSITIONING were the subject of discussion.
Regardless, the BEST TECHNIQUE is one that cures you and gets you results. EMOTIONS are decisive, which is why SUCCESS IS A STATE OF MIND, and a golden rule. “The winner is not always he who plays best, but he who makes the least mistakes”. We were not taught to say farewell, believing that things are forever, this gives us a sense of security. Inexorably time goes by, reality imposes itself and the results dictate. LA DOLFINA CAMPEON Un Trowing solitario, para el casco argentino, fue determinante, para desbordar la IRA de Etiqueta, que le costaría dos chukkers. De fondo a la platea, llegaba un susurro que decía....vamos negro ....vamos bien. Un deporte de elite, que obliga a la excelencia de todos, que ENFERMA LAS EMOCIONES, justo en la raíz donde nace la RAZÓN, afectando la TOMA DE DECISIONES. La voz no puede separarse de los sentimientos, y la TINTA de la mañana siguiente, expone fortalezas y oculta dentro del mensaje debilidades en sus declaraciones dejando esos PASWORD SECRETOS que abren VENTANA DE LO POSIBLE. “ESTE TITULO DEMOSTRO LO QUE LA GENTE DICE” “SABEMOS QUE LES PODEMOS GANAR” En ambos casos, ni caballada ni sistema, mucho menos la perdida de TROWINGS, LAS SALIDAS, O LO POSICIONAL, fue materia de análisis. Son “Momentos” diferentes a TORTUGAS, y preparatorios a la cita PARLERMITANA, donde ambos saben mucho con la BOCHA, como también saben que se gana con el BOCHO Los parlantes de Hurlingham informaban caballada y promociones como la compra de 20 cervezas y la 21, era gratis, como así también sugirió a los ganadores, la quita de los blazers, para la visualización de los sponsors, artífices INDISPENSABLES de la fiesta del polo, como así también el buen humor. El RECAMBIO GENERACIONAL, se impone, la condición humana ,indica que las recuperación luego del esfuerzo no es la misma, ni la fisiología de la contracción muscular se realiza en condiciones óptimas. Los reflejos disminuyen y la percepción del RIESGO, aumenta, por MEMORIA
o subjetivamente por SUPERVIVENCIA, se cuantifica el daño, y sus derivaciones, hace que el vapor del éxito empañe el cristal del EGO. La LONGEVIDAD DEPORTIVA NO SE LOGRA MEDIANTE UNA DECISIÓN, SI NO QUE ES UNA FILOSOFIA DE VIDA Se impone el concepto de ESPECIFICIDAD, no todo es para todos. Estructuras corporales ,brazos de palancas, genética y metabolismo como grupos sanguíneos diferentes , tenidos en cuenta en una planificación hacen la diferencia. Puede resultar contradictorio pero existen entrenamientos que lesionan, como así también el mal uso de la técnica, un punto más en un estribo inclusive el cambio de GRIP. Independientemente de ello ,la MEJOR TÉCNICA es aquella que te cura y te da resultado. Lo EMOCIONAL es determinante, es por ello que el ÉXITO ES UN ESTADO DE ÁNIMO, y una regla de oro. “No siempre gana el que mejor juega sino el que menos se equivoca”. No fuimos enseñados a despedirnos, creyendo que las cosas son para siempre, eso nos otorga seguridad. Inexorablemente el tiempo pasa, la realidad se impone, y los resultados mandan. Como reflexión final, les recuerdo que “LOS HOMBRES OLVIDADOS SON DE CUIDADO” justo en ello, se esconde su fortaleza, por más que caminos más cortos, generen problemas más largos . The event, it was the reunion of the players that were the Stars of the 80’s and helps to raise money for the childrens that live in Nuestra Señora del Pilar Home by
In the shadow of this classic Palermo final of the eighties, the dreams of many of the current ten-goalers were built. Some because they had no choice: Sunday was ‘polo day’ because dad played at Palermo, because mum would be responsible for the mallets, because their habitat was the tethering post and the Palermo stands were their natural setting, since they had been in their mothers’ wombs. Dad was Gonzalo, or Alfonso, or Ernesto, or Carlitos or Alex. Dad won the Open like other dads earned their Christmas bonus. At the end of the year. Others anonymously mixed with the crowds, watching the Heguy twins, watching Marcos, at one with his horse, or witnessing an immense Alex Garrahan with penalty shots that smashed windows. Many of them watched their idols put their boots on, mount their horses and go out onto the field, like witnesses to a sublime ceremony that ended in the climax of an

impossible play, a goal that went down in history, the embraces and the most coveted of podiums... They watched a brazenly young Bauti who came on to replace Alex and to listen to his brothers telling him “sweetly” how to win Palermo. A quartet with an unrepeatable fighting spirit, talent and pedigree was formed, sporting a single surname and the attitude of someone who does something that’s “too easy” just to feel like a star. The men who now sign autographs, would run around the field at the end of the Palermo Open final, their little mallets in hand, simply to set foot on the stage on which they imagined themselves winning trophies. Many of them do win them these days, inspired by that classic encounter, and twenty years later, they are helping to build the dreams of some other kids, albeit with a very different story: A story of solidarity which began with Gloria Solanet de Pavlovsky, a woman dear to the polo world as the mother of
Gloria Pavlovsky, and therefore mother in law of Marcos Heguy, and a person close to the most disadvantaged as someone who does not want to be estranged to what happens out there in the real world. She started by helping two families who were on the streets, renting them a home and giving them assistance. The Capitán Sarmiento house was soon too small, because there were many people in need. They received assistance of the Bishop of San Nicolás, who granted them some land that had been left to the church for benevolent purposes. And that was how they started to build what is now known as the Hogar (the Home) with the collaboration of private individuals, particularly the owners of the stud farms in the area, which they call the ‘Capital of Turf ’. “Thirty kids live in the home permanently”, says Gloria, one of the driving forces behind the polo event that helps to keep the project going... “we try to give them a family life as much as possible; they go to

school, play sports (hockey, football, etc), they have religious activities (they do their first communion, confirmation, etc)”.

“At the same site, with a great deal of effort, the workshops were built in two premises that face the street, where there is a laundrette and a second-hand clothes shop. There are spaces for the kids to learn cooking, IT, painting and, since last year, they did a grooming course given by Juan Pedro Albelo and others, giving them theoretical classes, and then, at the stud farms, they were able to practice with the horses, acquiring the basics of how to look after them”, Gloria tells us, enthusiastically engaged in a project in which polo and solidarity converge. “The aim is for the kids to gradually start working, to complete a schedule, to have responsibilities, but also to be prepared to earn a decent living when the time comes to leave the home, once they reach legal age”. “The idea of holding a match emerged from conversations at Palm Beach, when we were all helping with the ‘Charity Cuo’ organised by Manos del Sur. The two teams swapped places on the scoreboard over the six chukkas held, but it was in the sixth chukka that La Espadaña went on to win the match by 9 goals to 8. de SUEÑOS Espadaña – Chapaleufú 2011 El evento, en el que se reencontraron las figuras del Abierto Argentino de los años 80 ayuda a recaudar dinero para los niños que cobija el Hogar Nuestra Señora del Pilar. A la sombra de este clásico de la final de Palermo de los años ochenta, se construyeron los sueños de muchos de los actuales diez goles. Algunos porque, sin otra opción, al domingo le llamaban “polo” porque papá jugaba en Palermo, porque mamá cargaba los tacos, porque el habitat era el palenque y la tribuna de Palermo el marco natural, desde el vientre materno. Papá era Gonzalo, o Alfonso, o Ernesto, o Carlitos o Alex. Papá ganaba el Abierto como otros papás, ganan el aguinaldo. A fin de año. Otros, porque anónimos, mezclados entre el público, veían deslizarse por la cancha a
los mellizos Heguy, a Marcos, hecho uno con el caballo, o eran testigos de un Alex Garrahan inmenso con tiros de penal que rompían cristales. Muchos de esos miraban a sus ídolos ponerse las botas, subirse al caballo, salir a taquear, como testigos de una ceremonia sublime que terminaba en el climax de la jugada imposible, del gol para la historia, de los abrazos y el más ansiado de los podios … Miraban a un Bauti descaradamente jóven, que llegó a reemplazar a Alex y a escuchar a sus hermanos contarle “dulcemente” como se ganaba Palermo. Llegó a formar un cuarteto irrepetible en garra, talento y casta; portador de un mismo apellido y de la actitud de quien
hace algo “demasiado fácil” como para sentirse estrella. Esos que hoy firman autógrafos, corrían por la cancha al terminar la final del Abierto de Palermo, taquito en mano, para pisar el escenario en el que se imaginaban ganando torneos. Muchos de esos hoy los ganan, inspirados en aquel clásico, que veinte años más tarde, ayuda a construir los sueños de otros chicos, con una historia muy diferente: Una historia de solidaridad que empezó con Gloria Solanet de Pavlovsky. Ella está cerca del mundo del polo por ser la mamá de Gloria Pavlovsky, y así la suegra de Marcos Heguy, y cercana a los más necesitados por ser de las que no quiere estar ajena a lo que pasa allí afuera. Así empezó ayudando a dos familias que estaban en la calle, alquilándoles una casa, y dándoles asistencia. La casa de Capitán Sarmiento, por única, quedó chica, ya que eran muchos los necesitados. Contaron con la ayuda del Obispo de San Nicolás que les otorgó unos terrenos que se habían cedido a la iglesia con fines solidarios.

Así fue como empezaron a construir lo que hoy es el Hogar, con la colaboracion de particulares, sobre todo de los dueños de los haras de esa localidad, a la que llaman “Capital del Turf ”. “En el Hogar viven 30 chicos, en forma

permanente” nos cuenta Gloria, uno de los motores de el evento polístico que ayuda a mantener el proyecto … tratamos que tengan una vida en familia en la medida de lo posible; van a la escuela, practican deportes (jockey, futbol, etc) tienen actividades religiosas (hacen la primera Comunión, la Confirmación, etc.)” “En el mismo terreno, se construyeron, con mucho esfuerzo, los talleres, en dos locales que dan a la calle, donde funcionan un lavadero de ropa y una tienda de ropa usada. Hay espacios para que los chicos aprendan cocina, informática, pintura, y como novedad, desde el año pasado, hicieron un curso de petiseros dictado por Juan Pedro Albelo y ayudantes, donde se les dictaron clases teóricas, y luego en el haras pudieron practicar con los caballos, adquiriendo las nociones basicas sobre su manejo…” nos cuenta Gloria, involucrada y entusiasmada con un proyecto, en el que sin duda convergen polo y solidaridad. “El fin, es que los chicos, de a poco, empiecen a trabajar, cumplir un horario, tener una responsabilidad para que esten preparados para ganarse la vida de una manera digna cuando les llega la hora de abandonar el hogar, después de cumplir la mayoria de edad.” Lo del partido surgió de charlas en Palm Beach, cuando entre todos ayudabamos a hacer la “Charity Cup” organizada por Manos del Sur. Entre Marcos, Adolfito y Lolo, nos convencieron de organizar lo mismo en Argentina, y es gracias a todos los polistas y a Jockey Club, lo hacemos desde hace 8 años. Así el hogar puede seguir funcionando. Son ellos, los que, con su incondicional apoyo, nos dan la base para que ésto se haga realidad” culmina orgullosa. El Partido El partido fue de alternativas cambiantes. Ambos equipos compartieron el dominio del marcador a los largo de los seis chukkers disputados, pero fue en el sexto chukker cuando La Espadaña paso a ganar 9-8, quedándose con el partido. Una vez finalizado el juego los equipos se acercaron hasta el podio y ahí llegó el momento del merecido homenaje a estos grandes jugadores de todos los tiempos del polo mundial. La modelo Valeria Mazza fue la encargada de entregarle la copa al capitán de La Espadaña Gonzalo Pieres, el reconocimiento al jugador más valioso de la tarde quedó en manos de Alfonso Pieres. El jugador Adolfo Cambiaso fue invitado a subir al podio para entregar el cheque simbólico por un valor de 250 mil pesos recaudados para el Hogar Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Para cerrar la entrega de premio quien hizo uso de la palabra fue la señora Gloria Solanet de Pavlovsky, quien en un breve mensaje les agradeció a todos los presentes por el éxito alcanzado en este evento solidario. m

El Remanso shone once again in the Diamante Cup, in which they were crowned champions and made up for the final lost in 2010, on an afternoon with a colourful atmosphere provided by the youth teams of the Diamantitos Cup. To reach the final, the Hanbury team had to overcome tough opponents in the semifinals in the shape of Pablo Mac Donough’s TechnoPolo, a team that fought hard throughout the match and who they were only able to beat by one goal, 10-9. Valiente’s road to the final was not easy either, defeating L’Oreal by an identical score of 10-9. Final day arrived with Valiente on one side, longing to win it, and El Remanso on the other, seeking their fourth title in this event. They were able to turn around a match that eluded them in the first few chukkas thanks to the fighting spirit of the two Uruguayan players Alejandro Taranco and David Stirling. The match was watched by a big crowd that followed the ups and downs of the game with great interest and participated enthusiastically during the game, the prize ceremony and afterwards, bringing the party to a close with dancing.

EL REMANSO El Remanso volvió a brillar en la Copa Diamante al consagrarse campeón y olvidar así, la final perdida en 2010, en una tarde con todo el colorido que aportaron los equipos infantiles de La Copa Diamantitos.
Para acceder a la final, el equipo de Hanbury tuvo que sortear un duro rival en semifinales, fue a TechnoPolo de Pablo Mac Donugh, este equipo le presento una dura batalla a lo largo de todo el partido y solo lo pudo vencer por un gol 10-9. El camino de Valiente a la final tampoco fue fácil; venció a L’Oreal por idéntico resultado 10-9. Llegó el día de la final, de un lado estaba Valiente, con muchas ganas de ganarla; del otro, El Remanso buscando obtener su cuarto título en este evento. Supo dar la vuelta a un partido en el que los primeros chukkers le eran esquivos gracias al aporte de la garra Charrua de sus dos jugadores uruguayos Alejandro Taranco y David Stirling. El partido contó con un marco espectacular de público que siguió todas las alternativas del partido y participo entusiasta tanto del juego como de la entrega de premios y de la invitación a cerrar la fiesta quedándose a bailar.

It was the third championships held in Argentina, a competition organised by the Federation of International Polo (FIP). The teams that reached this stage were the ten sides that survived the qualifying rounds involving 52 nations. The teams were: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, USA, India, England, Italy, Mexico and Pakistan. The Argentine team, made up of Pablo Llorente (4), Alfredo Capella Barabucci (4), Martín Inchauspe (5) and Salvador Jauretche (1), overcame Brazil, comprising Beto Junqueira (1), Pedro Zacharias (5) Xande Junqueira (4), and Joao Novaes (4) in the final by a close 12-11. The final The deciding match was played on the club’s main field in front of a large crowd. Brazil were in charge of proceedings from the first chukka until the end of the first half. They were led by Pedro ‘Pedriño’ Zacharias, an enigma that the Argentine quartet were unable to solve, powerless against his speed of mind and effectiveness on goal. In the first half Zacharias converted six goals for Brazil.

Argentina were finding it hard to gain a foothold on the field of play and despite scoring goals in the second period they were behind on the scoreboard by 4-5. In the third chukka the team play displayed by Brazil was far superior to that of Argentina. The Xande Junqueira and Zacharias combination was lethal and they scored two more goals to lead 7-4.
the home team was on display, based on the good defensive work of Ichauspe and Capella, who skillfully marked Zacharias, and in attack ‘Pablito’ Llorente became the soul of the team, fighting hard and chasing every ball. This hard work and commitment enabled him to score his team’s seventh goal and draw level on the scoreboard at 7-7.
At half time Zubía made use of the time out to devise a new strategy. He sent Capella to the back and Jauretche as number one and Argentina went into the second half aiming to turn the game around in their favour. In the fourth chukka for the first time Argentina managed to contain their opponents and make it impossible for them to score, leading to partial score of 2-0.
Brazil’s performance continued to wane and Argentina took advantage of the situation to end the fifth period ahead by 10-9.

The sixth and final chukka was played with teeth clenched everywhere on the field. Argentina got ahead by scoring two penalties from 60 yards and Brazil, willing to fight to the end, scored two goals in a row in response to take the scoreboard to 12-11 in favour of Argentina. But their
ultimate conquest of the Brazilians came at the final bell and following the throwin won by Argentina the time was up. Argentina are world champions for the fourth time in history (they also won this competition in 1987 in Buenos Aires, in 1992 in Santiago de Chile and in 1998 in Santa Barbara, USA) while Brazil could not add to their three titles (1995 in St. Moritz, Switzerland; 2001 in Melbourne, Australia; and 2004 in Chantilly, France) and three runners-up medals (two in a row after being defeated by Chile in Mexico D.F., 2008). The remaining championship (1989 in Berlin, Germany) was won by the United States. Alfredo Capella received the prize for the most valuable player in the final and trophy for the best horse of the final went to Coupé 256, owned by Francisco E. Dorignac. As a prelude to the big final the play off for third place was held between Italy and England, with both teams finishing second in their groups, and they put on an entertaining match in which victory went to Italy by 9-7. The rest of the participating national teams occupied fifth to tenth place as follows: Australia, India, Mexico, Chile, Pakistan and the United States. The setting The meeting place for some time out during the World Polo Championships was the VIP marquee, where lunches and afternoon snacks were shared. All the squads were delighted to be able to compete in the tournament on four first-class fields on a par with the occasion. The crowds were also a big part of the party and the busiest days were the first day of the competition, Monday October 10, when the stands were nice and full because it was national holiday, Saturday October 15, when TV presenter Susana Giménez was in attendance, invited by the governor, and of course the best-attended and most exciting moment of the tournament was Friday 21 with the big final between Brazil and Argentina.

All the national sides stayed at the Hotel Quintana in the centre of San Luis. Prior to the competition there was a dinner at the home of the Governor of San Luis at the Estancia Grande Club and the official tournament dinner was held on Thursday October 20 and was organised by the San Luis Tourist Board. The night before the final there was a farewell dinner held at a traditional restaurant. Most of those attending were from the Argentina and Brazil contingents together with their families. m

El encuentro decisivo se jugó en la cancha principal del club con una masiva participación de público. El seleccionado de Brasil fue dueño de las acciones desde el primer chukker hasta
el final del primer tiempo, la batuta del equipo brasilero era llevada por Pedro “pedriño” Zacharias que se había vuelto un enigma sin resolver para el cuarteto argentino que nada podía hacer contra su velocidad mental y su eficacia al momento de convertir goles. En el primer tiempo Zacharias convirtió seis goles para Brasil. Argentina tenía dificultades para hacer pie en el campo de juego y a pesar de anotar goles en el segundo período, estaba abajo en el marcador por 4-5. En el tercer chukker

el juego colectivo mostrado por Brasil superaba por completo al del seleccionado argentino la sociedad de juego armada por Xande Junqueira y Zacharias era letal y éste anotaba dos goles más con los que Brasil se imponía por 7-4 . En el descanso de medio tiempo Zubía aprovecho lo minutos de break para armar una nueva estrategia de juego. Mandó a Capella de back y a Jauretche de primer delantero y así el seleccionado argentino encaró la segunda mitad del partido con la misión de dar vuelta la historia a su favor. En el cuarto chukker Argentina por primera vez lograba hacerle morder el freno a su rival y lo dejaba sin la posibilidad de sumar goles, fue por ello que los argentinos cerraron una parcial favorable por dos a cero, Brasil en en este cuarto período no sumó goles.

En el quinto chukker se vio la mejor versión del seleccionado local, en defensa se apoyaba en la buena labor de Inchauspe y Capella que marcaban con destreza a Zacharias y en ataque “Pablito” Llorente se convertía en el alma del equipo peleando y no dando por perdida ninguna bocha. Esa entrega y compromiso le permitía anotar el séptimo gol de su equipo y por fin llegar al tan ansiado empate en la pizarra por 7-7. Brasil seguía bajando su rendimiento y Argentina sacaba provecho de esta situación y concluía el quinto período arriba por 10-9. El sexto y último chukker se disputó con los dientes apretados a lo largo y ancho de todo el campo de juego, Argentina sacaba ventaja convirtiendo dos penales de 60 yardas y Brasil que estaba dispuesto a resistir hasta el final descontaba anotando dos goles seguidos que dejaban el marcador 12-11 en favor de Argentina, pero la última conquista de los cariocas fue al filo de la campana final y tras el throwin que ganó Argentina no había tiempo para más. Previo al inicio hubo una cena de agasajo en la casa del Gobernador de San Luis en el Club Estancia Grande, la cena oficial del torneo que se hizo en la noche del jueves 20 de octubre y estuvo organizada por La Secretaria de Turismo de San Luis y la noche posterior a la final hubo una cena de despedida que se realizo en un tradicional restaurante. La mayoría de los asistentes fueron las delegaciones de Argentina y Brasil junto a sus familiares. m

Carmelo, Colonia, Salta! When I’m in Argentina I don’t manage to get away much; if only I could because it does you good. Salta and Jujuy are very recommendable if you have four days free. Carmelo and Colonia (both in Uruguay), a couple of hours by ferry from Buenos Aires, are reachable if you just have two days. At Carmelo there is a divine hotel with a spa and golf course for the men, which is very good for relaxing and spending a few days away after the Argentine polo season. In Colonia you can hire bikes to travel round!

9 Carmelo, Colonia, Salta! Cuando estoy en Argentina no logro escaparme mucho, ojalá pudiera más, hace bien. Salta y Jujuy muy recomendable si tenes 4 dias libres. Carmelo y Colonia (los dos en Uruguay) a un par de horitas de ferry desde Buenos Aires, alcanza con dos días. En Carmelo tenes un hotel divino con SPA y los hombres tienen golf, muy bueno para irse a descansar y para retirarse unos días después de la temporada de polo Argentina. En Colonia te alquilas unas bicis y lo recorres.

The two finalists in the Hurlingham Open showed from the beginning of the tournament back on October 18 that they would be the stars of one of the most important competitions in the world. Both La Dolfina and Ellerstina dominated their respective groups, overcoming every obstacle that was put in their way on the road to the final. La Dolfina got their tournament underway by comfortably defeating Chapa Uno Hope Fund by 23 goals to 11. In their second match they were up against the Estancia Grande Sancor Seguros team, who they dispatched authoritatively by 20 goals to 10. And in their final game of the qualifying stages La Dolfina defeated Pilará Piaget by 17 goals to 7, a victory for Adolfo Cambiaso’s team based on the consistency and solidity of all four members of the side, playing an open game with long shots and supported by Adolfito’s effectiveness in attacking Pilará Piaget’s goal. Ellerstina, who had just won the 2011 Tortugas Open and were looking to repeat their Triple Crown of 2010, first took to the field in Group B against Alegria Crown Plaza, over whom they demonstrated a clear superiority both on the scoreboard and in their standard of play, winning by an indisputable 18-11. In their second match Ellerstina had to fight harder than

The La Dolfina Dubai team became the new champions of the 118th Hurlingham Open when they defeated Ellerstina Etiqueta Negra in an enthralling final. In the last five seconds of the eighth chukka, Ellerstina were on the verge of scoring a goal that would have taken the match into extra time. But it was not to be, and the traditional Ayrshire Cup was lifted by Juan Martin Nero, captain of La Dolfina Dubai.

they bargained for to secure another victory over Indios Chapalefú II Cardon by 14 goals to 12, a win that was anything but easy for the Pieres’ team. La Aguada BMW were unbeaten in the Hurlingham Tournament, much like Ellerstina, who also had two wins out of two under their belt. The two teams would decide between them who would be in the final and Ellerstina secured their third victory, by 14 goals to 12, to go through to the final of the 118th Hurlingham Open. Following the group stage, it was time for the eagerly awaited main attraction: a familiar final between La Dolfina Dubai
(39 goals) and Ellerstina Etiqueta Negra (37 goals). The event was scheduled for 4 pm on Saturday November 5, but from very early on, just after midday, the crowds started to arrive at the Hurlingham Club facilities. Nobody wanted to miss a single moment of this grand finale. The most fanatical hung up their flags using the television towers and cheered for their teams in the stands. After the Argentine national anthem, the eight players were introduced, stars of a final that would go down in world polo history, not just due to the quantity of

At the beginning it was reserved for gentlemen and ladies were not accepted.It was a meeting place of Allied immigrants during the war, where they collected funds used to help their troops and the Red Cross.
It was founded in the late 19th Century by Juan Ravenscroft and a group of Englishmen resident in Argentina who wanted to play their favourite sports: golf, polo, cricket, football, rugby, tennis, shooting, fox hunting and also horse racing.
In October 1893 they played the first match of what would become the oldest Open Polo Championship in the world and this club’s biggest source of pride: The Hurlingham Open. An exceptional occasion which this institution has kept alive for all these years.

After the first two chukkas the match was level on 2-2, but shortly into the third period La Dolfina were able to distance themselves a little from their opponents and gained a 4-2 lead thanks to some good work from Pablo Mac Donough. The best period for La Dolfina was when, led by Cambiaso, who in addition to playing well in attach was also coordinating his players in defence, they were able to gain a six-goal lead, taking the score to 13-7. Ellerstina, who appeared to have lost their concentration somewhat, were struggling to turn the match around, but they found their game again in the

sixth and seventh chukkas, with Facundo Pieres proving a difficult customer for his opponents and managing to close the gap. Ellerstina won the seventh period 4-1. La Dolfina were still ahead on the scoreboard, but only by a two-goal lead, on 16-14.

Everyone present could remember Ellerstina’s comeback in the Tortugas Open, when, with match almost lost, they forced the extra chukka and then clinched the trophy.
La Dolfina were crowned champions of the Hurlingham Open, thereby winning the first title of the Triple Crown obtained by this new line-up.

The last throw-in was won by Ellerstina and Nicolás Pieres took the ball up to the opposing goal, but he was unable to score the equaliser before the match was over.
In the prize-giving, Alfredo Harriott handed the Ravencroft Cup to the Ellerstina captain, Facundo Pieres, and Eduardo Ojea Quintana awarded the Ayrshire Cup to the La Dolfina captain, Juan Martín Nero. Adolfo Cambiaso was named the most valuable player in the final and the prize for the best pony of the match went to Open Tarántula, a mare bred and owned by Ellerstina

La Dolfina hizo su debut en el torneo venciendo con total comodidad a Chapa Uno Hope Fund por 23-11, en su segundo partido tenía como rival al equipo de Estancia Grande Sancor Seguros, al cual superó con total autoridad por 20-10 y por último en la fase de clasificación La Dolfina derrotó por 17-9 a Pilará Piaget; este triunfo del equipo de Adolfo Cambiaso estuvo basado en la regularidad y la solidez de los cuatro integrantes del equipo que propusieron un juego abierto con golpes largos apoyados en la efectividad de Adolfito, al momento de atacar los mimbres de Pilará Piaget. Ellerstina que venía de ser campeón en el Abierto de Tortugas 2011 y en esta temporada buscaba repetir la Triple Corona lograda en 2010, salió a la cancha debutando en la Zona B contra Alegria

Crown Plaza con quien marcó una clara diferencia tanto en el marcador como en el nivel de juego y lo hizo con un indiscutible 18-11. En la segunda presentación Ellerstina debió batallar más de la cuenta para quedarse con un nueva victoria sobre Indios Chapalefú II Cardon por 1412 triunfo que le costó conseguir al equipo de los Pieres. La Aguada BMW marchaba invicto en el Torneo de Hurlingham al igual que Ellerstina que también ostentaba un record de dos triunfos en igual cantidad de partidos. Los dos equipos definirían quien iba ser el finalista Ellerstina se quedaba con su tercera victoria por 14-12 y con ello obtenía el pasaje a la final del 118° Abierto de Hurlingham. Concluida la fase de grupos llegó el esperado plato fuerte: Una final conocida, La Dolfina Dubai (39 goles) vs Ellerstina Etiqueta Negra (37 goles). La cita era para las 16 hs del sábado 5 de noviembre, pero desde muy temprano, apenas pasado el mediodía, el público comenzaba a poblar las instalaciones del Hurlingham Club. Nadie se quería perder ni un detalle de esta gran final. Los más
fanáticos colgaron sus banderas usando las torres de televisión y alentaron a sus equipos en las tribunas. Luego del Himno Nacional Argentino se presentaron los ocho jugadores, protagonistas de una final que quedará para la historia del polo mundial, no solo por la cantidad de goles anotados, 37 en total sino también por ocho individualidades de altísimo nivel. El partido tuvo un comienzo muy parejo. Concluídos los dos primeros chukkers el partido estaba empatado 2-2, recién en el tercer chukker La Dolfina podía despegarse un poco de su rival y pasaba a ganar por 4-2 gracias a la labor de Pablo Mac Donough. El mejor momento de La Dolfina, se vivió cuando, liderados por Cambiaso, que no solo jugaba bien en ataque sino que además acomodaba a sus jugadores en defensa pudo sacar una ventaja de seis que los ponía13-7. A Ellerstina, algo desconcentrado, le costaba encontrarle la vuelta al partido aunque pudo reencontrase con su juego en el sexto y séptimo

El Club
Este club, da origen al partido de Hurlingham, ubicado en el oeste del conurbano bonaerense. Un sitio con una belleza singular, producto de las líneas arquitectónicas de estilo inglés y enormes espacios verdes. Fue fundado a fines del siglo XIX, por Juan Ravenscroft, y un grupo de residentes ingleses en Argentina, que buscaban practicar los deportes, que les eran propios: golf, polo, cricket, fútbol, rugby, tenis, tiro, cazas de zorros y también carreras de caballos. En sus comienzos fue un ámbito reservado chukkers en ese momento Facundo Pieres se volvió un dilema difícil de resolver paras sus rivales y acortaba las distancias. Al séptimo chukker, Ellerstina lo ganó 4-1. La Dolfina seguía arriba en el marcador pero solamente por dos goles de ventaja 16-14. En el octavo y último chukker estaba todo por definirse. La Dolfina llegaba al gol con dos anotaciones de Cambiaso y una más de Pelón Stirling de este modo estiraban la ventaja 19 -14 en favor de ellos, al partido le quedaban 5 minutos por delante. En la entrega de premios, Alfredo Harriot le entrego la Copa Ravencroft al capitán de Ellesrtina, Facundo Pieres; Eduardo Ojea Quintana entregó La Ayrshire Cup al capitán de La Dolfina, Juan Martin Nero. Adolfo Cambiaso fue premiado como mejor jugador de la final y el mejor caballo del partido fue Open Tarántula, yegua cria y propiedad de Ellerstina.
