Una tormenta en el desierto. Así podría describirse la evolución del polo en los últimos años en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos.

Una fuerza arrolladora que en poco tiempo logra poner patas arriba el calendario mundial y desviar la atención de todos hacia Dubai.

La historia comenzó apenas seis años atrás, gracias a que Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice presidente del Al Habtoor Group y patrón de Habtoor Polo, tuvo la brillante idea de crear la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, un evento de polo con dos torneos (Gold Cup y Silver Cup).

En un corto período de tiempo logró establecer y sentar las bases para una temporada (hoy se juega desde diciembre hasta abril) que no para de crecer y promete cada vez más.

Cuando algunos clubes todavía “luchan” por establecerse en el mundo del polo y contar con una temporada de nivel, Dubai ha logrado colarse entre los mejores gracias a la fuerza, dedicación y organización de un entusiasta Mohammed Al Habtoor.

La historia comenzó con seis equipos de doce goles. Hoy ya son de 10 y 18 goles de handicap y los números prometen seguir creciendo a corto plazo.

Nachi Heguy, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough, Lucas Monteverde pueden acreditar lo escrito y no pasará mucho tiempo para que la lista de “cracks” que disputen la temporada en los Emiratos sea más extensa.

A desert storm. That’s how the development of polo in recent years in the United Arab Emirates could be described.

An overwhelming force that has quickly turned the international schedule upside-down and diverted everyone’s attention to Dubai.

The story began just six years ago, when Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman of Al Habtoor Group and patron of Habtoor Polo, had the brilliant idea of creating the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, a polo event with two tournaments (Gold Cup and Silver Cup).

In a short period of time it managed to establish itself and lay the foundations for a season (now it is played from December to April) that has continued to grow and promises more and more.

When some clubs were still ‘struggling’ to establish themselves in the polo world and to have a quality season, Dubai has managed to sneak in among the best through the strength, dedication and organisation of an enthusiastic Mohammed Al Habtoor.

The story began with six twelve-goal teams. Now there are ten 18-goal sides and the figures promise to keep rising in the short term.

Nachi Heguy, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough and Lucas Monteverde can testify to the above and it not be long before the list of ‘cracks’ playing in the Emirates season grows.

La falta de canchas, ante el crecimiento repentino que ha tenido el polo, es una y por ello el año que viene, para la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2016, se estrenarán las canchas del Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, un resort de lujo cuyas obras ya comenzaron y les mostramos en éstas páginas.

Es de esperar que el esfuerzo e inversión que realiza Mohammed Al Habtoor cuente con el apoyo de los patrones “locales” y que cada vez se sumen más desde otros puntos del planeta.

En Europa con la llegada de la primavera se inicia la temporada alta. Restan pocas semanas para el comienzo de la Queens Cup en Inglaterra y el calendario se va calentando hasta el inminente Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo en Sotogrande por finales de julio.

Pero Santa María Polo Club ya inició su Temporada de Primavera, que este año se prolongara con una serie de torneos sumamente interesantes hasta su conexión con la gran temporada.

Y es que este año Santa María Polo Club esta de enhorabuena, y no solo en la competición deportiva, ya que ha visto como la Junta de Andalucía dio luz verde a su anhelado proyecto de Los Pinos.

Todo un acontecimiento que marcara un hito en la entidad de la familia Mora Figueroa de cara al futuro con un complejo muy valioso, que en las paginas interiores os lo contamos con mas detalles.

Ahora prepárense y disfruten de unos meses extraordinarios de polo en el Viejo Continente.

This is a great year for Santa María Polo Club, and not just in sports competition. The Junta de Andalucia had just approved the Los Pinos project. Quite a great news for the Mora Figueroa family club that will have in the future a valuable complex, described in details in the inner pages of this edition.

Now get ready and enjoy some extraordinary months of great polo all around Europe.

Dubai lo hizo de nuevo. Acostumbrados a lo imposible, también han logrado, gracias a la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, que la temporada de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos esté considerada, en apenas seis años, una de las más importantes del calendario mundial de polo.

Dubai no sabe de límites y en polo no es la excepción.

La iniciativa que seis años atrás tuvo Mohammed Al Habtoor, vice presidente del Al Habtoor Group y patrón de Habtoor Polo, de organizar un evento de polo con dos trofeos en disputa no ha parado de crecer y ha tenido este año uno de los momentos de mayor proyección en su corta, pero exitosa, existencia.

Con el incremento a 18 goles en su handicap y un récord de 10 equipos, la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2015 será recordada como una de las más exitosas hasta la fecha.

Dentro de la cancha figuras de primer nivel como Pablo Mac Donough, 10 goles de handicap y multi campeón con La Dolfina, Lucas Monteverde, Alfredo Capella, Alejandro Muzzio y Juan Gris Zavaleta entre otros, demostraron la valía que ya tiene este evento al contar con su presencia.

Fuera de ella, una organización de primer nivel mundial, coronada con un gran día final de atracciones y servicios como sólo Dubai puede ofrecer.

Por ello, y por muchas razones más, Dubai y la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series en particular, ya ocupan un lugar de privilegio en el calendario mundial de polo.

El futuro del polo en Dubai es próspero y el crecimiento ilimitado (sólo basta ver la nota del Al Habtoor Polo Resort en esta misma edición).

Dubai lo hizo de nuevo y lo volverá a hacer mucho mejor!

Zedan, el nuevo campeón Zedan, el equipo del patrón saudí Amr Zedan y con Pablo Mac Donough brillando a gran altura, se adjudicó merecidamente la Julius Bär Gold Cup 2015 al vencer en la final a Bin Drai por 9 a 7.

Zedan tuvo su merecido premio a una gran temporada en la cual sumó una final (President´s Cup), semifinales en la Mc Laren Cup y la conquista del torneo más importante de la temporada de polo en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, la Julius Bär Gold Cup. El talentoso 10 goles de handicap y multi campeón con La Dolfina, Pablo Mac Donough, fue la clave del éxito del equipo de Amr Zedan.

Mac Donough dejó en claro (como si falta le hiciese) la clase de jugador que es al liderar un cuarteto muy equilibrado y con excelente sintonía dentro y fuera de la cancha.

frente a Habtoor Polo, decisivo en la gran final con Bin Drai, mejor jugador del torneo y de la final, goleador del certamen con 37 goles (14 goles de diferencia sobre su más cercano perseguidor en la clasificación).

Además, por si faltaba, su yegua Irenita Pimienta, fue el mejor ejemplar de la final.

El debut de Mac Donough en la temporada de Dubai no pudo haber sido más exitoso.

Tuvo en Martín Gándara y Facundo Fernández Llorente a dos obreros que trabajaron arduamente partido a partido para que él pueda construir su mejor versión y derribar los firmes muros que se iban plantando delante en el camino hacia la consagración.

Palmarés de la temporada La Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2015 comenzó a fines de enero y el palmarés comenzo con Ghantoot como primer campeón del evento.

La formación que integraron Youssef Bin Dismal, Felipe Llorente, Juan Gris Zavaleta y Alejandro Muzzio se adjudicó la McLaren Cup. Habtoor Polo, el equipo de Mohammed Al Habtoor, levantó la Hildon Cup al tiempo que Abu Dhabi se consagró como mejor en la Bentley Cup.

The initiative started six years ago by Mohammed Al Habtoor, the vice-president of Al Habtoor Group and patron of Habtoor Polo, to host a polo event with two trophies up for grabs has grown continuously and this year enjoyed one of the crowning moments of its short but illustrious existence.

With the standard rising to 18-goal handicap and record high of 10 teams taking part, the 2015 Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series will go down as one of the most successful events to date.

Away from the field, the organisation is world-class, culminating in a great final day replete with entertainment and services the likes of which can only be found in Dubai.

For these reasons and many more, Dubai and especially the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, now make up an important part of the

world polo circuit.

The future of polo in Dubai is rich and the potential for growth knows no bounds (you only need to read the letter from Al Habtoor Polo Resort in this very publication to see why). Dubai has done it again and will continue to improve!

Zedan, the new champions Zedan, the team sponsored by Saudi Arabian Amr Zedan and which contains the irrepressible Pablo Mac Donough, rightfully won the 2015 Julius B채r Gold Cup after beating Bin Drai 9-7 in the final.

Zedan deservedly lifted the prize to cap off a great season in which they reached a final (President’s Cup), the semi-final of the McLaren Cup and also reigned supreme in the most important event on the United Arab Emirate polo calendar, the Julius Bär Gold Cup. The hugely talented 10-goal handicap player and multi-time champion with La Dolfina, Pablo Mac Donough, was the key behind Amr Zedan’s team’s success.

Mac Donough clearly showed (as if he needed to) the calibre of player he is by leading a very well-balanced quartet that showed excellent harmony on and off the field.

He was a key figure in the semi-final clash with Habtoor Polo, pivotal in the grand final against Bin Drai, the best player of the tournament and the final and was also the top scorer with 37 goals (14 goals ahead of his nearest rival in the scoring charts).

Additionally, if it needed to be stated, his mare Irenita Pimienta, was the best performing horse in the final.

Mac Donough’s maiden season in Dubai could not have been any more successful.

In Martín Gándara and Facundo Fernández Llorente he possessed two team-mates who worked tirelessly game after game to allow him to be at his best to breech the defensive walls presented before him on the team’s road to glory.

The season’s triumphs The 2015 Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series began at the end of January and Ghantoot scooped the first trophy by becoming the first champions of the event.

The team made up of Youssef Bin Dismal, Felipe Llorente, Juan Gris Zavaleta and Alejandro Muzzio was bestowed with the McLaren Cup. Pablo Mac Donough, multi campeón con La Dolfina, disputó por primera vez la temporada de polo de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos con el equipo de Zedan. En una extensa charla, el 10 goles de handicap habló de su primera experiencia en Dubai y del presente y futuro de La Dolfina.

¿Cómo te trata Dubai en tu primera temporada?

Dubai me trata muy bien, es un lugar muy lindo para jugar, el nivel se está poniendo muy bueno, hay 10 equipos con un nivel muy parejo y está muy competitivo. El otro tema que ayuda mucho es el clima.

Le falta mejorar el tema de las canchas que comparado con otros lugares es donde están un poco en falta. Pero en el resto de los aspectos va subiendo de nivel y se va a transformar en un punto importante para esta época del año. ¿La temporada de EAU puede llegar a competir con Palm Beach en un futuro cercano?

Acomodando el tema de canchas y subiendo más el nivel de juego, tranquilamente le puede competir a Palm Beach.

Obviamente que hoy estamos hablando de 18 goles de handicap contra 26 y allá se juega el US Open pero creo que en Dubai está todo muy cerca, a la gente le gusta mucho el polo y le dedican tiempo e inversión para que vaya mejorando. ¿Los profesionales es un destino que miran cada vez con mayor atención, es así?

Si, que tengas 10 equipos de 18 goles es muy interesante. No se años atrás cuantos equipos había compitiendo (NdeR: seis equipos) pero el crecimiento en cantidad y nivel de juego habla de un cambio muy importante en esta zona del mundo con respecto al polo.

¿Además es un destino ideal para disfrutar mucho en familia..

El clima es muy bueno, estoy muy cómodo, y además estoy muy cómodo con el equipo, Zedan. Tanto Amr (Zedan), el sponsor del equipo como Rodolfo (Ducos), el polo manager, y el resto de la organización, te hacen sentir como en casa, no te falta nada y eso es un punto muy importante para nosotros como familia.

Mejor no puedo estar pasando y no descarto para nada volver el año que viene.

Deportivamente también viene siendo una buena temporada para Zedan...

Estamos ganando muchos partidos pero nos falta un torneo. Jugamos la final de la President´s Cup en Ghantoot (Abu Dhabi) y las semifinales de la McLaren Cup (Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series).

La idea es tener un equipo competitivo y creo que se logró. Todavía faltan dos torneos más (Gold Cup y Emirates Cup) y esperemos tener la suerte de ganar alguno. [ N. de R. - Al cierre de esta edición Zedan se había adjudicado la Julius Bär Gold Cup ] El equipo de Amr (Zedan) lleva varios años tratando de organizarse.

Han quedado aquí caballos de Nachi Heguy, también de Pelón Stirling y todo eso suma. Obviamente que cada año que pasa suma, le

va aportando al equipo y se va organizando mejor. Que Amr siga apostando y haciendo las cosas como las viene haciendo tendrá como resultado, a corto plazo, en un equipo cada vez más fuerte. ¿Qué destino tiene Pablo Mac Donough una vez culminada la temporada en los Emiratos?

De Dubai me voy para Argentina por un mes. Quizás juegue alguna fecha del Polo Tour, pero tengo varios caballos en Pilar y quiero aprovechar para jugarlos bastante y organizar caballos para la temporada argentina.

Después de abril, en principio la idea es jugar la temporada en Inglaterra con UAE Polo Team como lo hicimos el año pasado.

que ello suceda. Y eso tiene un coste muy alto.

Se aprende. Hay ciertas cosas que por ahí se pueden evitar con animales que son imposibles de reemplazar como esta yegua que perdí. Puedo incorporar más caballos pero una yegua así me va a costar volver a tener en mi carrera. Pero se aprende de estas situaciones y por más que la yegua esté o no, si querés estar en un equipo super competitivo no podés aflojar nunca.

cancha 1 de Palermo. Es un poco difícil porque los caballos que más me gustan a mí son los fáciles y encontrar un caballo de esas características con bastante fuerza no es lo habitual.

Hay que buscar, siempre algo se encuentro.

En cuanto a la cría, uno cría con las yeguas que juega, con las que jugaron y están retiradas y con las muy nuevitas que tienen muchas condiciones, es un poco una combinación de cosas.

Tengo un equipo en el cual mis compañeros le están metiendo a full y yo no me puedo quedar atrás tampoco. Tengo que seguir comprando, sumando donde esté jugando y si bien la cría te ayuda un poco, no es suficiente.

Crías una cantidad de caballos para que alguno te llegue a jugar el Abierto pero es muy difícil sacar una yegua de dos chukkers en la final de Palermo.

Críar, tratar de hacer la mayor cantidad de caballos lógicos posibles y si salen para el Abierto mejor, esa es un poco la historia.

La organización de Pablo...

En los últimos años he tenido un poco de mala suerte con algunos caballos. Obviamente que el hecho de estar en un equipo hiper competitivo como lo es La Dolfina y haber llegado tan lejos en los últimos años tiene un coste y quedan caballos por el camino.

La verdad que no hay que relajarse nunca, en mi caso tengo que tratar de incorporar más caballos y es un cuento que no termina nunca. Aprovecharé el mes de abril en Argentina para enfocarme en ello para estar organizado de la mejor forma para la temporada argentina.

Los dos últimos años fueron muy bravos para nosotros y ganar dos veces la Triple Corona es muy bueno pero también te pasa factura.

¿Cuando hablás de comprar caballos, hacia donde apunta Pablo ?

Hay mucha gente que cría, y cría bien. El tema es tener acceso a esos caballos y conseguirlos para que estén en el palenque de uno. Todos estamos un poco en la misma entonces hay que estar atento y rebuscarselas para conseguir la mayor cantidad de caballos posibles.

Doble Triple Corona con La Dolfina..

Por ahí hoy termina un Abierto, lo disfrutás en el momento pero enseguida te ponés a pensar en el año que viene.

Son cosas que se van a valorar más cuando deje de jugar. Hoy te soy sincero ya me olvidé lo que pasó y ya estás atento a lo que se viene en el 2015.

Es una forma de seguir motivado,cierto, pero también el seguir “en la máquina” no te permite disfrutar algo tan importante como lo es ganar dos veces la Triple Corona.

Obviamente que lo que conseguimos es muy fuerte y nos costó muchísimo. Y tuvimos piedras grandes en el camino como no contar con Juanma Nero en la final del 2013, tener a Cambiaso en el 2014 complicado para

Palermo, donde le puso mucho huevo (sic) e hizo lo imposible para estar y termino jugando. Hasta el día que parecía no podía jugar y se presentó igual. Y eso obviamente lo valoramos mucho entre todos. Además del aporte de Milo Fernández Araújo que nos hizo unir mucho y no dejar librada cosas al azar, fue un aporte grande y se lo tenemos que agradecer. Y todo ello fue gracias al dolor de haber perdido en el 2012. Siempre de las derrotas se aprende, como calculo que Ellerstina debe haber aprendido de no ganar ningún torneo dos años seguidos. ¿Lo de Milo Fernández Araújo los marcó muchísimo, es así?

Es clarísimo, lo puede ver la gente de afuera y te lo confirmamos nosotros desde dentro.

Nos cambió la cabeza, nos hizo hacer cosas que no hacíamos antes y es una persona que te llega mucho. Es increíble como persona, te motiva enseguida y es muy importante tener alguien así en la cual confiamos mucho los cuatro, lo querramos tener con nosotros en el palenque y que entregue tanto.

Se puso la camiseta de La Dolfina desde el día uno y ha hecho esfuerzos muy grandes.

Eso lo valoramos y es lindo haberle devuleto en la cancha todo lo que él nos dio fuera. ¿Las ganas de seguir levantando trofeos sigue intacta?

Por supuesto que hay más hambre de gloria.

Sabemos que tenemos equipo para ganar y cuando lo tenés querés aprovechar para ganar todo lo que se pueda.

Sabemos también que los otros equipos te

van a venir a jugar con más ganas y siempre vamos a ser el equipo al cual le van a jugar sin presión. Pero es lindo también estar en esta situación.

Hay que pelearla, arrancar de cero, en el 2015 no ganamos nada, como siempre dice Milo.

El 2014 pasó, es historia y queremos seguir ganando. ¿Cómo ves a Ellerstina con la incorporación de Polito Pieres?

Ellerstina siempre es Ellerstina, con Mariano (Aguerre), con Polito (Pieres), con el que sea.

Obviamente que la incorporación de Polito es una motivación extra. Encarar la temporada con un primo hermano con el cual tienen una excelente relación es un plus para ellos. Con Aguerre tenían una forma de jugar, ahora hay que ver cómo funcionan y en qué posiciones, pero obviamente el equipo va a estar fuerte, siempre lo estuvo, pero ahora es cómo un empujón extra que tienen. ¿Más equipos en el Abierto, a favor o en contra del cambio?

Fui partidario en un momento de subir la cantidad de equipos en el Abierto. Creo que se puede organizar para que de una forma tengas más jugadores con chances de competir contra los mejores. Le das más cabida a los jugadores y además hay más caballos de diferentes criadores que juegan el Abierto.

Es cierto que no es la forma más fácil de hacerlo porque te queda un número raro pero creo que es bueno para el polo. Y también

soy partidario de que sí se hace el cambio y después no funciona, volver al sistema original. No es tan difícil y no pasa nada, hace 120 años que se juega el Abierto y que uno o dos años se pruebe algo diferente no le va a afectar a nadie.

Los deportes van evolucionando y los cambios a veces son buenos. Hoy hay más jugadores, equipos y caballos competitivos de lo que había antes El proyecto La Dolfina tiene fecha de vencimiento?

La verdad que no lo hemos hablado mucho.

Mientras los cuatro estemos con ganas vamos a seguir pero no es un tema del cual hablamos puntualmente.

No nos pusimos un tiempo, no hay ni un contrato ni nada que diga hasta donde vamos.

De hecho la única vez que hablamos de seguir juntos varios años más fue justamente cuando perdimos la final del 2012. Eso fue como una unión. Estar unidos cuando uno pierde es mucho más importante que cuando uno gana. Hoy, mientras todos estemos contentos, competitivos y cómodos cada uno en su lugar, el equipo va a seguir.

Hay algún plan futuro, una meta que quieras cumplir?

Hoy no tengo ninguna meta futura más que concentrarme en La Dolfina y que me vaya lo mejor posible en los próximos años.

No tengo nada claro del futuro, lo veo muy lejano a algo que sea muy distinto a lo que estoy viviendo con La Dolfina.

Pablo Mac Donough, a multi-time champion with La Dolfina, is playing the polo season for the first time in the United Arab Emirates with the Zedan Polo Team. We had a long chat with the 10-goal handicap player in Dubai in which he spoke about his first experiences in the Middle East as well as the present and the future with La Dolfina.

How has Dubai been treating you during your first season?

Dubai has been great to me, it is a wonderful place to play, the standard is rising here at a very steady rate, there are 10 very evenly matched teams and it is extremely competitive. The weather has also helped me with the move.

There needs to be improvement in terms of the state of the playing fields as they are lacking a bit in this area compared with other places. But the standards are rising in every other aspect of the sport and Dubai will eventually become an important port of call during this period of the year.

Could the UAE season begin to compete with Palm Beach in the near future?

By addressing the state of the fields and raising the playing standards, Dubai could easily begin competing with Palm Beach.

Obviously as of today we are talking about an 18-goal handicap compared with a 26, the level at which the US Open is played.

But I think they’re getting very close to that level in Dubai, people really like polo here and invest a lot of time and money into developing the sport.

Are professionals paying more attention to this destination?

Yes, the fact that there are 10 teams with 18-goal handicaps is very interesting. I don’t know how many teams were competing in

years gone by (six teams), but the growth in the numbers playing and the rising standards point to a substantial shift in this part of the world with respect to polo.

It is also a fantastic place for the family.

The weather is great here, I’m very comfortable and, on top of that, I’m very much at ease with the team, Zedan. Amr (Zedan), the team’s sponsor Rodolfo (Ducos), the polo manager, and everyone else involved with the organisation, really make you feel at home. You’re not left wanting for anything and that is hugely important for us as a family.

It couldn’t be going any better and I wouldn’t at all rule out returning next year.

On the sporting side of things this is also proving to be a good season for Zedan.

We are winning a lot of games but we still lack a tournament title. We reached the final of the President’s Cup in Ghantoot (Abu Dhabi) as well as the semi-finals of the McLaren Cup (Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series). The plan was to put a competitive team together and I think we have achieved that. There are still two tournaments to go (the Gold Cup and the Emirates Cup) and hopefully we get the rub of the green to win one of them. [ * In this edition deadline, Zedan won the Julius Bär Gold Cup ] Amr’s team (Zedan) have been organising

themselves for a number of years now.

Some of Nachi Heguy as well as Pelón Stirling’s horses are here and that has had a knock-on effect. Obviously with each year of development that passes, the team benefits and things become even more well organised. As long as Amr keeps on showing faith in the team and continues with what he has been doing, in a short space of time we will become an even stronger team than before.

What destination does Pablo Mac Donough have in mind once he completes his season in the UAE? After Dubai I will travel back to Argentina for a month. I might play the odd Polo Tour game, but I have a number of horses in Pilar and I want to make the most of my time to play with them as much as I can, as well as organise acquiring more horses for the upcoming Argentine season.

The idea for after April, to begin with anyway, is to play the season in England with the UAE Polo Team just like we did last year.

Organising for Pablo Mac Donough..

I have had a bit of bad fortune over the last few years with some horses. Clearly playing with a super competitive outfit like La Dolfina and getting as far as we have over the last few years takes its toll and some horses inevitably fall by the wayside.

In truth you can never sit back and relax. In my case I’m always bedding in new horses

and it is a never-ending task. I’ll make the most of April in Argentina to concentrate on that in order to be as organised as possible ahead of the Argentine season.

The loss of your mare Irenita Nuera..

A lot of time when you are taking part in the Argentine Open you prioritise winning at all costs. And that can have a massive cost.

You learn from your mistakes. There are certain things you can avoid doing with animals that are impossible to replace, as was the case of this mare that I lost. You can bed in new horses but it is unlikely I’ll ever find another mare like her in my career. But you learn from these situations and whether the mare is here or not, if you want to be part of a super competitive team you can never slack off.

My team-mates are always working at full capacity and I cannot fall behind either.

I have to continue shopping around, picking up points wherever I’m playing and, as much as breeding can help you, it’s not enough on its own.

The last two years have been fantastic for us and winning the Triple Crown twice is great but it can also take its toll.

When you talk about buying horses, where does Pablo Mac Donough go to do this?

There are a lot of good breeders. It is a matter of having access to these horses and being able to have them at your beck and call. We are all on the same boat in this

regard. You have to be on the ball and glean as many horses as you can.

What do you look for in the horses you rear and buy?

In my case they need to be easy to handle and powerful enough to play on the main field in Palermo. It is a bit complicated because the horses I like need to be easy to handle and it is not often that you can find a horse with this characteristic that is also strong.

You have to stay on the lookout, something always comes up.

With respect to rearing, you rear with the mares that area still in competitive action, with those that were in the past but are now retired and with the latest crop, which are in great shape. It is a combination of things.

You rear a lot of horses so that one will be able to play the Open, but it is extremely difficult to use a mare for two chukkers in the Palermo final.

Rearing is basically trying to get as many properly equipped horses as possible and if they make it to the Open, then all the better.

The Triple Crown double with La Dolfina..

When you win an Open you enjoy it in the moment but straight away you get to thinking about the upcoming year.

It is something I’ll give more thought to once I’ve stop playing. To be completely honest with you, I have already forgotten about what happened and am now fully

focused on what’s in store for 2015.

It is a way of staying motivated, but staying “in the machine” also means you don’t get to enjoy the significance of winning two Triple Crowns.

Obviously what we achieved was extremely impressive and it entailed a lot of hard work on our part. We also had big obstacles standing in our way such as the absence of Juanma Nero in the 2013 final and having an unfit Cambiaso in 2014 in Palermo, where he gave his all and did the impossible to make it there and play. Right up until the day of the final itself he wasn’t able to play but he made himself available nonetheless.

And we were obviously really impressed with the level of commitment he showed. And it is also worth mentioning the contribution of Milo Fernández Araújo, who really united us and didn’t leave anything to chance. He made a huge contribution and we owe him a lot of gratitude. All of that came from the pain that stemmed from our defeat in 2012.

You always learn from your defeats, as I’m sure Ellerstina will have learnt from having failed to win a single tournament for two straight years.

Milo Fernández Araújo had a profound effect on you, is that correct?

He clearly did. People from the outside could see the impact he had on us and those of us who were part of that inner circle can confirm that as well. He changed our mentality, he had us doing things we’d never done before. He is someone who really has an affect on you. He is an incredible

person, he instantly motivates you and it’s important to have someone like that all four of us trust. We want to have him pushing us on from the sidelines. He bought into the La Dolfina philosophy from day one and he put in a massive effort. That is how we see it and it feels great to have paid him back on the field for everything he did for us off it.

Is your motivation for lifting trophies as strong as ever?

Of course there is still hunger for more glory. We know we have a good enough team to win and when you have that, you want to make the most of your advantage to pick up as many titles as you can.

We also know that the other sides are going to try and pressure us even more so now and that we are always going to be the team the others will have nothing to lose against. But it is also fantastic to be in this situation.

We have to fight for glory, start again from scratch. We haven’t won anything in 2015, as Milo always reminds us.

2014 is in the past, it’s history, and we want to keep on winning.

How do you think Ellerstina will do now with the arrival of Polito Pieres?

Ellerstina will always be Ellerstina, whether they have Mariano (Aguerre), Polito (Pieres), or whoever.

Obviously the arrival of Polito will give them a boost. Getting the season started with a first cousin they have a great relationship with will motivated everybody concerned. They had a playing style under Aguerre, now we’ll have to see how they set about playing and in what positions, but the team are obviously going to be strong, they always have been, but now they have been given that extra boost.

More teams in the Open, are you in favour or opposed to the change?

I was in favour of the idea to increase the number of teams in the Open. I think it could be organised in order for players to have more of a chance to compete against the best. It would open up space for players and there would also be more horses taking part in the Open from a wider range of breeders.

While it’s true that it isn’t the easiest way to do things, because you can end up with an strange number of teams, I believe it is good for polo. I am also supportive of the idea of making the change and returning to the original system if it doesn’t work out as planned. It isn’t that difficult to do and it’s not that big a deal. The Open has been around for the last 120 years and if something different is tried out for a year or two, it won’t have a devastating effect on the tournament.

Sport is always evolving and sometimes a change is a good thing. There are more players, teams and horses competing nowadays than ever before.

Does the La Dolfina project have a sell by date?

To be honest we haven’t talked about that much. As long as the four of us are motivated we’ll continue, but it is not a subject we discuss frequently.

We haven’t given ourselves a time frame yet, there is no contract or anything like that stating when we have to stop.

In fact, the only time we have spoken about staying together for a few more years was right after losing the 2012 final. That was like a collective agreement. Staying united after a defeat is much more important than after a win.

Today, while all of us are happy, competitive and comfortable where we are, the team will continue.

Do you have any plans for the future? Do you have any objectives in mind?

Apart from continuing with La Dolfina and ensuring that the next few years go as well as possible for me, I don’t have any future plans.

I don’t have a clear picture of the future, I see it far in the distance and as something that has no bearing on what I’m currently doing with La Dolfina.

Con una sensacional victoria por 10 goles a 2,5, el equipo Cartier se impuso al BMW y ganó la 31ª Snow Polo World Cup 2015 en St. Moritz.

Cartier se proclamó campeón en St. Mori tz por tercer año consecutivo. Chris Hyde, de Inglaterra y 6 goles de handicap le dio la victoria a su equipo. Hyde juega con un hándicap de 9 en polo arena en su país, y esto lo convierte en uno de los mejores jugadores de polo arena del mundo. Junto con sus compañeros de equipo, el australiano y capitán Munro Ford y los ingleses Max Charlton y Jamie Morrison, el equipo Cartier fue el justo vencedor.

Al inicio del tercer chukka, Cartier ya se había desmarcado con una clara ventaja de 5 a 1,5. El juego brillante del joven Max Charlton atrajo todas las miradas, y sólo durante el cuarto chukka él solo marcó tres goles memorables. Uno de ellos, con un acrobático revés. Charlton, que forma parte del equipo nacional inglés, hizo gala de un juego alucinante.

En resumen: fue una arrolladora victoria para el equipo Cartier. «Reto Gaudenzi ganó

dable capitán de equipo, el irlandés Richard Fagan, junto con sus tres compañeros, Max Hutchinson —también irlandés—, Richard Le Poer Beresford y James Harper —ambos ingleses—, finalizaron el partido con un 6 a 4,5 a favor del Badrutt’s Palace. «¡Este escenario es increíble!», exclamó Pepe Riglos, que jugaba por primera vez sobre nieve aquí en St. Moritz. «se ha jugado un polo sobresaliente. Y, si se me presenta la ocasión, será un placer volver a jugar aquí.”

With a sensational 10 goals to 2,5 win over Team BMW, Cartier won the 31st Snow Polo World Cup 2015 in St. Moritz.

Winning the tournament for the third time in a row, Team Cartier completed the hat trick. The 6-goaler Chris Hyde from England led his team to victory. Hyde plays with a 9-goal arena handicap in England, making him one of the world’s best arena players. Among with his team mates, Australian team captain Jonathan Munro Ford and the two English team mates Max Charlton and Jamie Morrison, Cartier was the deserved champion.

By the start of the third chukker, Cartier had banked a clear lead of 5 : 1,5. The brilliance of the game of the young Max Charlton came to the fore— scoring three memorable goals in the fourth chukker alone. One of them was an acrobatic backhander. Charlton, who is also part of the English national team, showed a terrific game.

After the game, polo pro Chris Hyde, playing for the winning team and scoring five of the final’s ten goals, praised the high level of the tournament. «Saturday’s game (against Badrutt’s Palace) was on of the best snow polo games I ever played in or anyone has ever seen, I think,» said the scorer of the three-times winning team.

«The conditions were superb during all the tournament, that’s the best I’ve ever played on.»

Brilliant sunshine and prickling minus temperatures showcased the last day of the Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz.

Team Trois Pommes and Team Badrutt’s Palace faced each other in the La Martina Cup, competing for third place. The for-

midable Irish team captain Richard Fagan and his three team mates Max Hutchinson, also Irish, Richard Le Poer Beresford and James Harper, both British, left the field with a 6 : 4,5 in favour of the Team Badrutt’s Palace.

«What an amazing scenery!» said Pepe Riglos, who played on snow for the first time here in St. Moritz, «it was superb polo.

And, if I ever get a chance, I will be happy to come back and play here again.»

The tournament was a great success with the public - more than 12.000 spectators attended the games. The debut of Reto Gaudenzi’s new organising team was a success. «We worked hard and were faced with difficult weather conditions during the preparations. We are proud to have made it a perfect success; it was simply sensational.

That was St. Moritz at its best, and we will be back next year.»

Seis equipos de todo el mundo coincidieron por vez primera en la Thailand Polo King’s Cup 2015 en un torneo de lo más internacional, pura acción en el terreno de juego e «historia del polo», puesto que los polistas de hándicap 10 Gonzalo Pieres y Pablo Mac Donough jugaron por primera vez en Tailandia.

El torneo no decepcionó a nadie, al contrario: proporcionó la clase de actividad en la cancha que se esperaba del torneo con el hándicap más alto del continente asiático.

Tras cuatro días de emocionantes encuentros, fue el equipo local de Tailandia, el King Power, formado por Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha (0), Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha (1), Gonzalo Pieres (10) y Marcos Di Paola (8), quien se declaró vencedor de la Thailand Polo King’s Cup al derrotar en la final por

13 goles a 12 al Ahmibah Brunei, formado por Su Alteza el Príncipe Qawi (-1), Su Alteza Real el Príncipe Jefri Bolkiah (0), Francesco Bensadon (8) y Ale Agote (8).

Los fuegos artificiales y un entusiasmado público fueron los encargados de felicitar a los equipos durante la ceremonia de entrega del trofeo, en la que el premio a mejor jugador fue a parar a SAR el Príncipe Jefri Bolkiah. La velada fue amenizada por exhibiciones equinas de estilos muy diferentes pero igualmente impresionantes, entre las que cabe destacar un Pegaso alado y un caballo ejecutando trucos de magia que, francamente, había que ver para creer.

El torneo de la Thailand Polo King’s Cup,

que se disputa bianualmente, lo organiza la Thailand Polo Association (TPA) desde 2003; se alterna cada dos años con la All Asia Cup, y desempeña un papel muy significativo en las listas de encuentros de polo en Tailandia como uno de los torneos anuales de polo más prestigiosos de la región.

El torneo tuvo lugar en las dos canchas del VR Sports Club (el único club de polo de Bangkok): el campo VR de potente iluminación - la cancha principal - y el terreno SPP. El VR Sports Club, propiedad de Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha (dueño también del King Power Duty Free y del Leicester City Football Club), ha acogido en el pasado partidos protagonizados por Adolfo Cambiaso, Lolo Castagnola y Marcos Di Paola, y en este año han jugado allí otros jugadores de élite como Nachi Heguy (9), Ignacio Novillo Astrada (9) y Joaquín Pittaluga (7).

Thailand Polo King’s Cup Tournament Six international teams met for the first time at the Thailand Polo King’s Cup 2015 in a truly international tournament full of action on the pitch and ‘polo history in the making’ as ten goalers Gonzalo Pieres and Pablo Mac Donough played for the first time in Thailand.

The tournament did not disappoint producing exactly the kind of on-pitch action to be expected at the highest handicapped tournament in Asia.

After four days of exciting play it was the home side from Thailand - King Power - Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha (0) & Aiyawatt (Top) Srivaddhanaprabha (1), Gonzalo Pieres (10) and Marcos Di Paola (8) the winner of the Thailand Polo King´s Cup Tournament after defeating

Ahmibah Brunei (HH Prince Qawi (-1), HRH Prince Jefri Bolkiah (0), Francesco Bensadon (8) and Ale Agote (8)) by 13 goals to 12 in the final.

Fireworks and cheering spectators greeted the teams at the post-match presentation of the Trophy to King Power, with MVP being awarded to HRH Prince Jefri Bolkiah. This was followed by a spectacular party to celebrate the win, with players and VIP guests being entertained by equine displays of an altogether different, yet equally impressive style, including a winged Pegasus and pony performing tricks that simply had to be seen to be believed.

Played as a biannual tournament, the Thailand Polo King’s Cup, which has

been organised by the Thailand Polo Association (TPA) since 2003, alternates every two years with the All Asia Cup and has a special significance in the Thai Polo fixtures list as one of the most prestigious annual polo tournaments in the region.

The tournament took place at the VR Sports Club (the only polo club in Bangkok) on its two pitches - the fully flood lit VR Ground (the main ground) and SPP Field. Owned by Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha (also owner of King Power Duty Free and Leicester City Football Club) the VR Sports Club has previously held matches featuring Adolfo Cambiaso, Lolo Castagnola and Marcos Di Paola, and this year other top players like Nachi Heguy (9), Ignacio Novillo Astrada (9) and Joaquin Pittaluga (7).

El hombre que ha ganado todo en el polo, y que también ha hecho todo para que su deporte trascienda, sin embargo prefiere la sencillez de una comida en familia que al glamour, y afirma: “Me han invitado a todos lados. Es muy lindo que te reconozcan así. Pero... te soy sincero: la realeza no me moviliza. No me gustaría estar en la cabeza de la reina, pero sí en la de Federer, Nadal o en la de Maradona en el 86, cuando les metió el gol a los ingleses. Y, como digo siempre, sigo prefiriendo el asado en Cañuelas antes que una cena en el mejor restaurante del mundo.”

Ese es Adolfo Cambiaso (h), Adolfito o Dolfi, como usted prefiera. El habita en el laberinto de las paradojas. Es el mejor en un deporte en el que nunca terminó de encajar. Y nunca lo hará. Una actividad tildada de clasista, que él siempre trató de volver más popular. Da batalla desde hace muchos años. Casi desde que se inició en la actividad, allá a fines de los 80. “Aporté mi granito de arena para que todos conozcan más al polo”, dice, y no disimula el orgullo.

Su mundo es otro cuando no está montado sobre un caballo.

Es distinto, aunque él haya hecho lo de siempre. Primero, la Riccheri. Después, la autopista a Cañuelas. Enseguida, la bajada Alejandro Pettion. Más adelante, el club La Dolfina. Y, finalmente, su casa. En el camino que el polista, para muchos el mejor de la historia, recorre siempre para huir de la popularidad que supo conquistar desde su talento.

“Mi lugar en el mundo es Argentina”, suele repetir también. Tanto lo siente que su casco celeste y blanco es un emblema internacional. Cuando habla del país, su voz toma una intensidad diferente. “Me gusta representar a mi país. Me encantaría que las cosas mejoren en la Argentina. Como hay políticos malos, debe haber buenos también...

A la gente no la veo bien. Están todos muy nerviosos. Hay falta de trabajo y se ha perdido el valor del dinero. No sé de quién es la culpa, pero tenemos un país espectacular, hay que cuidarlo más entre todos.”

Cambiaso, ese que dice de sí mismo no saber nada, se convierte seguido en un embajador sin sede ni credenciales. “A todos los que

juegan conmigo les digo que la Argentina es lo mejor. Y muchos me creen: Ali Albwardi [el multimillonario dubaití que lo contrata desde hace más de una década para jugar en Inglaterra], en uno de sus viajes para ver el Abierto de Palermo, compró el Four Seasons. Hay tantos países que se ven bien, pero no lo están, y nosotros tenemos todo, pero no estamos bien. Eso me da rabia.”

“No me fijo en el pasado, le apunto al próximo título.

El secreto del éxito es difícil de explicar.”

Suena raro al escucharlo, pero para comprender al protagonista, primero hay que saber que logró pasar las fronteras del polo, aunque nunca fue un hombre locuaz, al contrario. Adolfito siempre huyó de las entrevistas y se recluyó en su mundo, alejado de la exposición. Pero por estos días encontró en la felicidad el motivo ideal para soltarse.

“Más contento no puedo estar”, afirma con la serenidad que lo muestra en las canchas donde, a las puertas de los 40, que cumplirá el próximo 15 de abril, y donde sigue cabalgando sobre un espíritu voraz e indomable.

“Soy un agradecido de la vida. He tenido otros años espectaculares en mi carrera, pero nunca imaginé que podría lograr tanto a esta edad, con tantas lesiones”, confiesa.

En 2014, jugó 51 partidos y ganó 49, cosechando a su paso la USPA Gold Cup, en los Estados Unidos; Queen’s y Coronation Cup, en Inglaterra; Bronce, Plata y Oro, en Sotogrande; ya en la Argentina sumó títulos en los Abiertos del Jockey Club, Tortugas,

Hurlingham y Palermo, igualando la marca del histórico Coronel Suárez de los hermanos Heguy y Harriott, al ganar de manera consecutiva la Triple Corona Argentina.

El año se cerraría a lo grande para Cambiaso, ya no por un logro deportivo sino por un reconocimiento. El Círculo de Periodistas Deportivos que entrega los premios Olímpia, lo eligió como el deportista argentino más destacado del año, algo que hasta aquí sólo había logrado Juan Carlos Harriott (h.) en 1976, y en una temporada donde Emanuel Ginóbili obtuvo su tercer anillo de la NBA, y Lionel Messi fue subcampeón con la Argentina en el Mundial de Brasil.

Una vez más surgieron las comparaciones de todo tipo. Sobre los alcances de sus logros comparados con los de sus colegas en otros deportes, y dentro del polo mismo. Es el más grande de la historia? Quién ganaría un duelo entre el Coronel Suárez de “Juancarlitos” y La Dolfina de Cambiaso ?

Las comparaciones son odiosas y la única realidad es que los dos con la virtud su juego y sus acciones de cada día, nunca pasaron desapercibidos. En la era de la clonación, es imposible presagiar que serán irrepetibles.

“Dolfi” siente que hay ciertas cosas que uno las tiene incorporadas y no se explican: “ ¿Cómo hace Federer para ganar tanto? Si le preguntás, no tiene una explicación y nunca la tendrá. Hay algo que tenés o no adentro. ¿Messi qué tiene? Imposible saberlo. Es un fenómeno y punto. Yo, ¿qué tengo? No sé, juego y trato de ganar. Intento motivarme y ser el mejor en ese momento. Tampoco hay que creérsela, porque jamás avanzarías”.

Busca superarse siempre. “Los demás también crecen y no te podés estancar. Cuando creés que ya sabés todo, empezás a perder.

No me fijo en el pasado, le apunto al próximo título. El secreto del éxito es difícil de explicar. No hay una respuesta. El que dice que la tiene, miente, porque nunca tuvo éxito, entonces. El éxito no lo buscás, surge con trabajo y al focalizarte en lo que te propongas”.

Así es Adolfo Cambiaso, el que no piensa en si es o no el número uno del polo. Un personaje autentico.

DOS GRANDES EN NUMEROS: CAMBIASO Y HARRIOTT Adolfo Cambiaso (h.) nació el 15 de abril de 1975 en Cañuelas, Buenos Aires. Jugó su primer Abierto Argentino de Polo en 1992, y desde entonces lo ganó 11 veces. Con su equipo, La Dolfina se presentó en Palermo en el 2000, y desde entonces llegó a 14 finales en 15 años, la comparación con “Juancalitos” Harriott, el cerebro del mítico equipo de Coronel Suárez, que dominó casi tres décadas del polo en la Argentina es constante, van aquí algunos números:

The Queen of England has handed him the Queen’s Cup on eight occasions. Gabriel Batistuta, the legendary goalscorer for the Argentine national football team, asked to meet him and is now friends with him today. Maradona spent three hours cheering him on from the ponylines during a game. Kings and tycoons alike come to watch him play.

He is the man who has won it all in polo, and who also done everything to make his sport transcend its traditional boundaries. However, he prefers the simplicity of having a family meal to all the glamour that surrounds his world, and he states: “I’ve received invitations from all over. It’s great to be recognised like that. But… if I’m honest, the royal treatment doesn’t really appeal to me. I wouldn’t like to be in the Queen’s shoes, but I would love to be in the skin of Federer, Nadal or Maradona in 1986, when he scored that goal against England. And like I’ve always said, I’d still prefer food from the grill in Cañuelas to having dinner in the world’s best restaurant.”

This is Adolfo Cambiaso (h), or Adolfito or Dolfi, depending on what you prefer. He is a man who inhibits a world of paradoxes. He is the best at a sport in which he has always delivered the goods. And he always will.

He has always tried to bring this sport, so often derided for being elitist, to the masses. He has been battling it out for a long time, almost ever since he came to prominence in the sport towards the end of the 1980s.

“I did my bit so that polo would become more widely known”, he says without concealing his pride.

He inhibits another world when not riding horses.

His life is different but he would have lived it the same way regardless. First, la Riccheri. Then, the dual carriageway to Cañuelas, taking the slope down to Alejandro Pettion straight away, and further on arriving at the La Dolfina club. And finally, back home. The polo man, considered the best player of all time by many, has always shied away from the limelight his talent has granted him access to.

“Argentina is my place in the world”, he often repeats.

He has so much national pride that his celeste and blue helmet has become an international emblem. His voice takes on a different level of intensity when he talks about his country. “I like representing my country. I’d love for things to improve in Argentina. Just as there are bad politicians, there also have to be some good ones… People aren’t optimistic about the current situation. Everyone is very nervous. There isn’t enough employment and the currency has devalued. I don’t know who is to blame but we live in a spectacular country that we all need to take more care of.”

Cambiaso, who claims he knows nothing, has become an ambassador without holding an official title or credentials. “I tell everyone I play with that Argentina is the best. And a lot of them agree with me. On one of his trips to watch the Palermo Open, Ali Albwardi [the multimillionaire from Dubai who brought him to play in England over a decade ago] purchased the Four Seasons.

There are a lot of countries that are highly thought of but aren’t that great, while we have it all here yet things aren’t going so well for us at the moment. That angers me.”

It seems strange to hear it, but to fully understand him it is first worth bearing in mind that he transcended his sport despite never being the talkative type, in fact he is quite the opposite. Adolfito has always avoided interviews and prefers to keep himself to himself, staying well clear of the spotlight. But he is in a happy enough frame of mind at the moment to get over his usual reluctance. “I couldn’t be happier”, he says with the same serenity he shows on the field where, on the cusp of turning 40, which he will do on 15 April, he continues to ride with an insatiable and indomitable spirit. “I’m very thankful for the life I have.

I’ve had more spectacular years added to my career but I never could have imagined achieving so much at this age, given all the injuries I’ve had”, he confesses.

He played 51 games in 2014, winning 49 of them, and along the way picked up the

USPA Gold Cup, in the USA; the Queen’s Cup and the Coronation Cup, in England; as well as securing Bronze, Silver and Gold in Sotogrande. In his native Argentina he won more titles in the Jockey Club, Tortugas, Hurlingham and Palermo Opens, and equalled the record set by Coronel Suárez’s sibling twosome of Heguy and Harriott by successfully retaining the Argentine Triple Crown.

The year closed out in spectacular fashion for Cambiaso, not because of another sporting accomplishment but instead because of an acknowledgement. The Círculo de Periodistas Deportivos, the body that hands out the Olimpia awards, lauded him as the Argentine sportsperson of the year, a feat only achieved once before by a polo player, Juan Carlos Harriott (h.) in 1976. What’s more, this recognition came at the end of a year in which Emanuel Ginóbili won his third NBA Championship ring and Lionel Messi finished runner-up with Argentina in the World Cup final in Brazil.

This of course sparked off all kinds of comparisons in terms of the significance of his achievements compared with those of his fellow sportsmen, as well as those of other polo players. Is he the greatest of all time?

Who would come out of top in a battle between Juancarlitos’s Coronel Suárez team and Cambiaso’s La Dolfina?

Comparisons are tiresome and the only truth is that both men, thanks to their attributes

and daily actions, will never be forgotten.

In this age of cloning, it is impossible to tell if another player will come along and match their accomplishments one day.

“Dolfi” believes there are certain things ingrained within him that he cannot explain: “How does Federer win so often? If you were to ask him, he would never be able to tell you. There is something you are either born with or not. What is it that Messi has? It’s impossible to know. He is a phenomenon and that’s all there is to it. What do I have?

I don’t know exactly. I play and try to win.

I try to motivate myself and be the best in every given moment. You can never think you are the best, as you’ll never progress that way”.

He is always looking to outdo himself. “Your competitors are always improving so you can’t be idle. Once you start thinking you know it all, that’s when you start losing. I don’t look at the past, I’m always focused on the next title. The secret to success is difficult to explain. There is no one answer.

Whoever says they have it is lying, because that means they’ve never had it. Success is not something you look for, it’s a byproduct of hard work and focusing on what you set out to do”.

That is the nature of Adolfo Cambiaso, a man who does not think about whether or not he is the polo number one. A true character.

Adolfo Cambiaso acaba de bajar del escenario del salón de la Rural donde se entregaron los Premios Olimpia 2014. Se trata de una distinción que da el Círculo de Periodistas Deportivas Argentino para elegir a los más destacados de cada disciplina del año. Y entre todos ellos, se entrega el Olimpia de Oro al mejor de los mejores.

En 1976, Juan Carlos Harriott (h.) había sido elegido como el mejor deportista argentino del año. Justo premio para la leyenda del polo, que superaba a representantes de disciplinas más populares como fútbol, boxeo, tenis o automovilismo. Eran tiempos donde el país no estaba tan segmentado en clases sociales como ahora, y los prejuicios no dominaban el pensamiento de la gente.

Estamos en 2014. El polo ha perdido terreno con respecto a muchos otros deportes. Argentina es un país lleno de estrellas, como Manu Ginóbili en básquet (ganó otra vez la NBA con San Antonio Spurs), Lionel Messi (el súper pibe del fútbol), Luciana Aymar (la mejor jugadora de hockey de la historia) y Pechito López (un corredor que el primer título mundial para el país después del mítico Juan Manuel Fangio). Una enormidad de talento.

Contra todos ellos cometía Adolfo Cambiaso, con su segunda Triple Corona consecutiva en Argentina, su paso arrasador por Sotogrande, y dos grandes temporadas en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra. Con sólo dos derrotas en todo el año, con 51 partidos ganados sobre 53. Impresionante.

Olimpia de Oro en la mano. A la primera persona que ve es a este periodista. Está feliz como un nene. Da un abrazo grande y sentido, de corazón, y dice: “Gracias por todo”. Seguramente el que para muchos es el mejor polista de todos los tiempos (sumen un voto por acá), habrá sentido la necesidad de agradecer tantas entrevistas y tantas opiniones, casi siempre con elogios. No hubo loas injustificadas. Nunca. Lo que es indudable es que los elogios no salen gratis desde este pluma: deben ganarse en la cancha.

Han sido dos décadas juntos, de crecer cada uno en lo suyo. El protagonista y el periodista. Y al periodista sólo le queda por decir gracias por todo, Adolfito. Por vos el polo es más importante en todo el mundo.

“Thank you for everything” Adolfo Cambiaso had just stepped down from the stage at La Rural, where the 2014 Olimpia Awards were handed out. It is a distinction awarded by the Argentine Sports Journalists Circle to the top sports stars of the year in each discipline. And out of them, the Golden Olimpia is awarded to the best of the best.

In 1976, Juan Carlos Harriott (Jr) was chosen as the greatest Argentinean sportsman of the year. A just reward for a legend of polo, who surpassed representatives of the most popular disciplines such as football, boxing, tennis and racing. Those were times when the country was not as segmented into social classes as it is now, when prejudices were not at the forefront of people’s minds.

Here we are in 2014. Polo has lost ground to many other sports.

Argentina is a country filled with stars, like Manu Ginóbili in basketball (winning the NBA Championships once again with the San Antonio Spurs), Lionel Messi (the wonderkid of football), Luciana Aymar (the best hockey player in history) and Pechito López (a race car driver who won the first global title for the country after

the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio). A wealth of talent. Facing all this stood Adolfo Cambiaso, with his second consecutive Triple Crown in Argentina, his incredible display in Sotogrande, and two fantastic seasons in the United States and England. And only two losses in the whole year, winning 51 out of 53 games. Impressive.

Adolfo Cambiaso came off the stage with the Golden Olimpia in hand. The first person he saw was this journalist. He was as happy as a kid. He gave me a big, heartfelt hug, and said, “Thank you for everything.” No doubt he, who for many is the greatest polo player of all time (another vote from me here), must have felt the need to say thank you for so many interviews and opinion pieces, almost always filled with praise. None of it was unwarranted. Never. The fact is that praise doesn’t come for free from this pen: it must be earned on the field.

It’s been two decades together, both of us growing in our own way.

The protagonist and the journalist. And for the journalist, all that remains is to say thank you for everything, Adolfito. Because of you, polo is more important throughout the world.

La Dolfina won the 121st Argentine Polo Open Championship and, for a second straight year, claimed the Argentine Polo Association (AAP) Triple Crown.

The historic achievement by the 40-goal handicap foursome, made up of the ingenious Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough and Juan Martín Nero, included 24 straight victories between 2013 and 2014, a fourteenth final (tenth in a row) in 15 years that ended with

a win over Ellerstina, a tally that ties them with North Santa Fe and El Trébol as the third most lauded team in the Palermo Open, with 8 titles, trailing just behind Coronel Suárez (25 titles) and Hurlingham (15).

Cuando todavía resuenan los ecos de la doble Triple Corona de La Dolfina en el 2014 ya comenzó el movimiento de equipos y jugadores para la temporada argentina 2015.

La principal, y gran novedad, será la ausencia de Miguel Novillo Astrada en La Aguada.

El Club emitió un comunicado en el cual informa que “Miguel Novillo Astrada decidió no jugar la Triple Corona 2015. Después de estas últimas temporadas intensas y duras, resolvió descansar un año para volver con todo en 2016.

Miguel continúa formando parte de La Aguada desde el palenque, aportando su experiencia y organización”.

En consecuencia las formaciones de La Aguada ICBC y La Aguada Las Monjitas ICBC que participarán de la Triple Corona 2015 serán las siguientes: La Aguada-ICBC: Agustín Merlos 8, Guillermo Terrera (h) 8, Guillermo Caset (h) 9 e Ignacio Novillo Astrada 9. Total 34.

Con estos dos nuevos equipos se completaron los seis que participarán en la Triple Corona 2015, La Dolfina, Ellerstina, Alegría y Chapaleufú.

El multi cmapeón mantiene su formación habitual de 40 goles con Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling (h), Pablo Mac Donough y Juan M. Nero.

Otra de las grandes novedades para esta temporada, aunque ya era un secreto a voces, es la incorporación del talentoso Polito Pieres a Ellerstina.

Polito se suma al equipo de sus primos Gonzalo, Facundo y Nicolás Pieres y cumple el sueño de jugar con el equipo de General Rodríguez.

Su alejamiento de Alegría, finalista del Abierto Argentino en el 2013, le dará la oportunidad a Cristian Laprida de jugar junto a Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde y Fred Mannix.

El histórico Chapaleufú con Alberto Heguy

(h), Ignacio Heguy, Bautista Heguy y Eduardo Heguy tendrá su merecido lugar en la Triple Corona 2015 en lo que seguramente sea la despedida de este glorioso cuarteto.

CLASIFICACIÓN Al cierre de esta edición eran tres los equipos confirmados para disputar la Clasificación 2015 de la Temporada Argentina.

Magual, Miramar y Washington ya tienen sus cuartetos formados y a éstos se les sumarán al menos un par más que vienen sumando con fuerza y están en vías de confirmación oficial.

Magual contará con la novedad de Francisco Elizalde que se suma a Alejandro Muzzio, Marcos Di Paola y Santiago Toccalino.

Miramar incorpora al sudafricano Nachi Du Plessis junto a Gonzalo Deltour, Valerio Zubiaurre e Iñaki Laprida.

Finalmente Washington, el primero en anunciar su participación, formará con Facundo Sola, Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario, Diego Cavanagh y Alfredo Capella.

REPLETE WITH CHANGES While the echoes of La Dolfina’s Triple Crown double win in 2014 still resonate loudly, teams and players alike are already preparing for the 2015 Argentine season.

The main piece of news is the absence of Miguel Novillo Astrada for La Aguada.

The club made a statement in which they announced, “Miguel Novillo Astrada has decided to opt out of the 2015 Triple Crown.

Following the last few intense and tough seasons he has made up his mind to rest up and return fully recharged for 2016. Miguel will continue to make up part of the La Aguada team from the sidelines, where he will offer his experience and organisational skills”.

As a result, the La Aguada ICBC and La Aguada Las Monjitas ICBC formations taking part in the 2015 Triple Crown will be as follows: La Aguada-ICBC: Agustín Merlos 8, Guillermo Terrera (h) 8, Guillermo Caset (h) 9 and Ignacio Novillo Astrada 9. Total 34.

Sebastián Merlos 9 and Alejandro Novillo Astrada 8. Total 35.

These two new teams will make up the remainder of the six sides taking part in the 2015 Triple Crown, La Dolfina, Ellerstina, Alegría and Chapaleufú.

The multi-time champions will continue with their regular 40-goal formation of Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling (h), Pablo Mac Donough and Juan M. Nero.

Another big bit of news this season, albeit a poorly kept secret, is the incorporation of the very talented Polito Pieres to team Ellerstina.

Polito joins his cousins Gonzalo, Facundo and Nicolás Pieres and fulfils his dream of playing for General Rodríguez outfit.

His departure from Alegría, finalists in the 2013 Argentine Open, opens up the doors for Cristian Laprida to play alongside Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Fred Mannix.

The longstanding Chapaleufú team made up of Alberto Heguy (h), Ignacio Heguy, Bautista Heguy and Eduardo Heguy will have a well-

deserved place in the 2015 Triple Crown which is sure to be the farewell event for this splendid foursome of players.

QUALIFICATION At the close of this year’s edition, three teams were confirmed to fight out the qualification phase for the 2015 Argentine Season.

Magual, Miramar and Washington have already put their foursomes together and will be adding at least another couple of names in order to bolster their teams and are all on course to officially confirm their squads.

Magual will welcome Francisco Elizalde, who joins up with Alejandro Muzzio, Marcos Di Paola and Santiago Toccalino.

Miramar have brought in South African Nachi Du Plessis to play with Gonzalo Deltour, Valerio Zubiaurre and Iñaki Laprida.

And finally, Washington, the first team to announce their participation in the qualification phase, will be made up of Facundo Sola, Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario, Diego Cavanagh and Alfredo Capella.

En Dubai es uno de los referentes donde lleva ya seis años defendiendo los colores de Abu Dhabi, el equipo del patrón Faris Al Yabhouni.

Durante la pasada temporada argentina se le presentó la oportunidad de unirse al equipo de Alegría, del patrón Fred Mannix, justamente por una lesión de éste y Capella no la desaprovechó.

En plena Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2015, y con la mente puesta en los desfíos que se vienen para la próxima temporada de Argentina, Capella conversó con La Bocha Polo Magazine.

Dubai a esta altura ya es como tu casa, ¿no es así?

Por suerte pudimos venir a jugar una temporada más. Me divierte mucho y me siento muy cómodo jugando acá.

Ya son seis las temporadas que llevo jugando para Faris Al Yabhouni que nos hace sentir como a uno más de su familia.

Esta temporada se armó un equipo divertido, primero con Hugo Barabucci y Felipe Martínez Ferarrio y después con el Negrito Zavaleta y si bien no se nos vienen dando los resultados que esperábamos estamos poniéndole muchas ganas e intentando que salgan las cosas lo mejor posible. ¿Cómo es jugar con alguien tan importante para vos como Hugo Barabucci?

Es muy divertido, fue él quien me ayudó en todo y nos conocemos tanto que con apenas mirarnos en la cancha ya sabemos que va a hacer cada uno o hacia donde le va a pegar a la bocha.

Lo escucho mucho, más afuera que adentro de la cancha (risas). Pero siempre lo escucho porque me conoce mucho, tiene mucha experiencia. Por ahí a veces me hago un poco el rebelde pero tiene mucha razón en lo que me dice y los consejos que me da.

¿Cómo recibiste la noticia de que tenías que jugar para Alegría en el Abierto Argentino?

Tuve la suerte que me tocó a mí. Fue una experiencia muy buena y muy divertida.

Estaba un día en casa a la mañana y me llaman de la Alegría para ver si podía jugar porque Fred Mannix había recibido un golpe en su mano y no podía jugar más.

La verdad que no tuve que pensarlo mucho (risas) y acepté enseguida.

Un poco de nervios sentí en la previa pero gracias al gran equipo que tiene Alegría y al apoyo de mis compañeros los manejé bien.

Mi objetivo era hacer lo mejor para la Alegría y gracias a que ellos me hicieron sentir enseguida parte del equipo las cosas salieron bien.

Siempre ayuda estar en la vidriera, como le llamamos nosotros, y es muy bueno para el futuro. ¿Cómo fue jugar en la cancha 1 de Palermo?

El sueño de todo jugador. Muy divertido y además tuvimos la suerte de ganar ahí.

Clasificación 2015.

Alfredo disputará la Clasificación para el Abierto de Hurlingham y Abierto Argentino con el equipo de Washington junto a Facundo Sola, Diego Cavanagh y Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario.

“Encaramos esta temporada con un equipo divertido para la Clasificación 2015. Estamos todos con muchas ganas y ahora toca montarse bien que es lo más complicado. Pero estamos trabajando fuerte para llegar en las mejores condiciones.

Las ganas y las intenciones de clasificar están. Vamos a jugar el Abierto del Jockey y muchas prácticas juntos en la previa y ahí veremos donde estamos parados.

Alfredo Capella is one of the “new generation” of polo players who has been knocking strongly on the door for a number of seasons now.

Possessing enormous talent and an ability to hit the ball that is difficult to match, Alfredo is one of the standout players on the world polo circuit.

He is one of the stars of the show in Dubai where for the last six years he has been playing with Abu Dhabi, the team owned by Faris Al Yabhouni.

He was given the opportunity to join part of the Alegría team during last year’s Argentine season due to an injury sustained by the owner, Fred Mannix, and Capella did not let the chance go to waste.

With the 2015 Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series well underway, and his mind set on the challenges that lay ahead in the upcoming Argentine season, Capella took some time out to speak with La Bocha Polo Magazine.

At this stage Dubai must be like home for you, is that how it feels?

Luckily we were able to come here and play for another season. I am really enjoying myself and feel extremely comfortable playing here. I have been playing for Faris Al Yabhouni for six years now and he has made us feel like members of his family. An entertaining team has been assembled this season, first with the arrivals of Hugo Barabucci and Felipe Martínez Ferarrio, as well as the incorporation of Negrito Zavaleta, and although we haven’t had the results we would have hoped for so far, we are putting in a lot of effort and trying to ensure that things go as well as possible.

What is it like playing with someone you look up to as much as Hugo Barabucci?

It is a lot of fun. He has helped me with everything and we understand each other so well that we barely have to look at each other on the field in order to know where each one of us will be or where we are going to hit the ball.

I am a good listener, more so when I’m away from the field than on it (laughs). But I always listen to him because he knows me well and has a lot of experience. Sometimes I can act a bit rebellious but he always makes good points when he gives me advice.

How did you react to the news that you would be playing for Alegría in the Argentine Open?

I have been really lucky. It was a really fun experience.

I was at home in the morning and got a call from Alegría asking if I could play because Fred Mannix got a blow to his hand and couldn’t continue.

To be honest I didn’t have to think about it for too long (laughs) and I accepted the offer right away. I was a bit nervous in the build-up to the season but thanks to the great team Alegría have, and the support of my team-mates, I was able to get over that.

My goal was to do my best for Alegría and thanks to the fact that they made me feel part of the team from the get go things went really well.

It always helps to be in the shop window, as we call it, and it is great for your future prospects.

What was it like playing on the main field in Palermo?

It is the dream of every player. It was a lot of fun and we also had the good fortune to win there.

2015 Qualification.

Alfredo will play the qualification stages of the Hurlingham Open and the Argentine Open with the team from Washington alongside Sola, Diego Cavanagh and Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario.

“We are preparing for this season with a good spirited team for the 2015 Qualification. We are all really up for this and now is the time to put in the hard work. But we are working hard in order to be in the best shape possible.

The motivation and commitment to qualifying is there. We are going to play in the Jockey Open and will have a lot of training sessions together in the build-up to the tournaments so we’ll know then what kind of shape we’re in.

La Comisión Territorial de Ordenación del Territorio y Urbanismo (CTOTU) de la Junta de Andalucía aprobó, definitivamente, el gran proyecto para el desarrollo turístico de la zona de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club, vinculada al deporte del polo, que supondrá un impresionante Centro Turístico-Deportivo en el corazón de Sotogrande, con el gran propósito de romper con la estacionalidad y hacer de la urbanización un destino de polo los 365 días del año.

Un proyecto de altura que, según el nuevo director general de Santa María Polo Club, Óscar Nieto, tiene como objetivo “convertir a Sotogrande en la Florida de Europa”.

de unos recursos únicos para conseguirlo y debemos apostar por ellos”, argumenta, al respecto, Nieto.

Para la segunda fase del proyecto será necesaria la Revisión del Plan General de Ordenación Urbanística (PGOU) de San Roque, en el que ya se lleva varios años trabajando, pero que no acaba de ver la luz y que se extenderá en otros 300.000 metros cuadrados. Este terreno incluirá una extensión de La Marina de Sotogrande, como preveé el POTCG (plan comarcal), y contará con una inversión cercana a los 300 millones de euros y otros 1.200 puestos de trabajo, aproximadamente.

Una importante actuación que contempla un nuevo foco de excelencia a nivel internacional en la urbanización, con nuevas zonas hoteleras, residenciales, comerciales, deportivas y de ocio, logrando unir deporte y turismo de primer nivel. Espacios entre los que destaca la próxima creación de una Casa Club en Santa María Polo Club, una zona comercial y un hotel de lujo. Un plan que, en su primera fase, contará con una inversión directa e inducida superior a los 200 millones de euros y que repercutirá en unos 800 puestos de trabajo directos e indirectos.

Todo este plan se engloba, asimismo, dentro de un ‘macroproyecto’ denominado ‘Distrito Equino en el Valle del Guadiaro’ creado con el fin de convertir a la zona en el punto de referencia de este sector en Europa, a semejanza de otros modelos como el de Palm Beach y Wellington. Las previsiones de inversión en este proyecto, desde distintos capitales privados, estarían cerca de los 500 millones de euros, alcanzado una estimación de 3.000 puestos de trabajo, entre permanentes y temporales.

“Es un gran trabajo de muchos años, y en cierta medida por ello está condicionada mi llegada, para subirme al proyecto y colaborar en su puesta en marcha. Su aprobación ha sido una gran noticia, pero a corto plazo es complicado que se identifiquen cambios sustanciales. Aunque es algo que se quiere acometer lo antes posible. It was a while coming but finally the big project to turn Sotogrande into an international tourism epicentre for aficionados of polo has been approved. An ambitious plan that will entail new hotel and residential complexes, commercial and sports centres and entertainment zones. This is deserved recognition for an urbanisation that has been playing polo for more than half a century.

The Governing Body of Andalusia’s Commission for Land and Urbanisation Planning (CTOTU) has definitively approved the big project to develop tourism in the Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club, which has ties to the sport of polo, an undertaking that will entail an impressive Tourism-Sport Centre in the heart of Sotogrande. The intention of the plan is to tackle the seasonality of the sport and turn the urbanisation into a 365-day-a-year polo destination. This is a high-level project the aim of which, according to the new managing director of the Santa María Polo Club, Óscar Nieto, is “to turn Sotogrande into the Florida of Europe”.

This is a significant accomplishment that will entail a new focal point of excellence on an international level in the urbanisation, with new hotel, residential, commercial, sports and entertainment zones that will unite high-end sport and tourism. Among the standout areas will be the construction of the Casa Club in the Santa María Polo Club, a commercial centre as well as a luxury hotel. A mission that, in its first phase, will involve over €200 million of direct investment and will create 800 direct and indirect jobs.

“It has been a work in progress for many years now, and to some extent that is why I’ve joined, in order to be part of the project and collaborate with getting it off the ground. This approval is great news, but in the short term it will be complicated to identify substantial changes. Although it is something we want to undertake as soon as possible. We have special resources to help us achieve our

goal and we must make the most of them”, argued Nieto in respect to the project.

For the second phase of the project a revision will need to be undertaken of the San Roque General Plan for Town Planning (PGOU), which has been worked on for a number of years, but is yet to see the light of day and will involve a further 300,000 squared meters of land. This will include an extension of La Marina de Sotogrande, as anticipated by the POTCG (regional plan), and will involve close to €300 million in investment and also create approximately another 1,200 jobs.

Likewise, this whole plan comprises the ‘macro project’ entitled ‘Equine District in the Guadiaro Valley’ the purpose of which is to turn the area into a benchmark within the European industry, similar to other models like Palm Beach and Wellington. The investment forecasts for this project, which are made up of various private funds, will amount to close to €500 million and are estimated to include 3,000 full-time and part-time positions.

A model for a future in which the figure of the horse will be at the centre of things, but a model that will transcend the world of polo the implementation of which is a clear sign of the importance that is attached to equestrian sports and the revitalising effect they have on the economy, employment and the area’s image in terms of high-end tourism and the bright future that lays ahead for polo and horse riding across Andalusia.

La US Polo Season ya está en marcha y ya se han jugado los dos primeros torneos de la Triple Crown. Orchard Hill y Audi son los dos primeros ganadores de una temporada de polo muy competitiva.

Audi Polo Team, con el patrón Marc Ganzi y Gonzalo Pieres, se hizo con la USPA Gold Cup mientras que los primos Facundo y Polito Pieres alzaron el primer trofeo de la temporada de 26 goles, la CV Whitney Cup.

USPA Gold Cup Audi derrotó a Orchard Hill por 16-15 mediante la conversión de un penalti de 40 yardas por parte de Gonzalo Pieres Jr. en un chukker adicional para hacerse con la USPA Piaget Gold Cup, la segunda competición de la American Triple Crown.

Audi presentaba a Marc Ganzi, que se lesionó un hombro durante la semifinal contra Las Monjitas. Tras un tratamiento médico de tres días y algo de práctica el domingo por la mañana, Marc estaba preparado para jugar. En un primer momento, se esperaba que su hijo Grant ocupara su lugar.

Audi tuvo un comienzo fuerte dominando la primera mitad y se mantuvo por delante de Orchard Hill hasta el cuarto chukker. El cuarteto de Steve van Andel tomo la ventaja por primera y única vez al final del cuarto chukker pero Audi se puso de nuevo en cabeza por 14-12 en el quinto chukker.

Con anterioridad ese mismo día, Coca Cola logró una victoria por 14-11 contra Lechuza Caracas, consiguiendo así la Subsidiary Engels & Volkers Tesoro Cup.

CV Whitney

Orchard Hill derrotó a Alegría por 16 goles a 13 obteniendo el primer torneo de la American Triple Crown. La final se jugó en el Palm Beach International Polo Club y tuvo un comienzo fuerte, con un total de nueve goles marcados en el primer chukker, que dejaron a Alegría por delante con 5-4.

Orchard Hill marcó tres goles en el segundo chukker, lo que le permitió ponerse en cabeza (8-6). Bajo el liderazgo de los primos Pieres, Facundo y Polito, Orchard Hill llegó al medio tiempo con una ventaja de 10-6.

Una sensacional carrera de 150 yardas de Polito Pieres redujo el margen a un gol (13-14). Audi respondió rápidamente con un gol de Gonzalito, para ponerse en cabeza por tres goles (15-12).

Steve van Andel y los chicos de Orchard Hill volvieron a la carga durante la segunda mitad, dando muestras de su mejor polo y dominando el partido, mientras que Alegría se esforzaba por marcar. El equipo de Julian Mannix logró reducir el margen a dos goles en el sexto chukker (12-14), pero Orchard Hill no mostró compasión alguna.

Con el tiempo a punto de agotarse, Orchard Hill logró empatar el partido: Polito Pieres se hizo con la bocha en el medio campo y marcó el 15-14. El emocionante partido acabó con un gol de Facundo que suponía el empate a solo 4 segundos del final.

La explosiva combinación de Facundo y Polito, con el apoyo extraordinario de Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario, fue lo bastante sólida como para proporcionar la victoria a Orchard Hill y que se hiciera con el primer título de la Triple Crown de los Estados Unidos.

El chukker adicional comenzó con un lanzamiento. Una falta contra Orchard Hill supuso un penalti de 40 yardas, que Gonzalito Pieres se encargó de marcar para conseguir la victoria y el título.

Antes de la final, Nico Pieres marcó un gol de oro en el chukker adicional que permitió a Lechuza Caracas ganar por 12-11 y hacerse con la Subsidiary Les Armour Cup.

US Polo Season is on with the first two tournaments of the Triple Crown already played. Orchard Hill and Audi are the first two champions of a very tough polo season.

Audi Polo Team, with patron Marc Ganzi and Gonzalo Pieres, won the USPA Gold Cup while cousins Facundo and Polito Pieres lifted the first trophy of the 26 goals season, the CV Whitney Cup.

Audi defeated Orchard Hill 16-15 in extra chukker on a 40-yards penalty conversion by Gonzalo Pieres Jr, to capture the USPA Piaget Gold Cup, second competition of the American Triple Crown.

Audi featured Marc Ganzi, who was injured on a shoulder during the semifinal match against Las Monjitas. Following a medical treatment in the last three days and some stick-and-ball on Sunday morning, Marc was ready to play. At first, it was expected his son Grant would take his place.

Audi had a stonger start dominating the first half and led Orchard Hill through the fourth chukker. Steve van Andel’s foursome took their first and only advantage at the end of that fourth chukker but Audi re-took the lead, 14-12 in the fifth chukker.

Earlier in the day, Coca Cola took a 14-11 win over Lechuza Caracas, and won the Subsidiary Engels & Volkers Tesoro Cup.

Orchard Hill defeated Alegria 16 goals to 13 to win the first tournament of the American Triple Crown. The final was played at Palm Beach International Polo Club and had a strong start, with a total of nine goals scored in the first chukker, putting Alegria 5-4 up.

Orchard Hill then scored three goals in the second chukker, allowing them to take the lead (8-6). Led by the Pieres cousins, Facundo and Polito, Orchard Hill took a 10-6 advantage by half time.

A great 150 yard run by Polito Pieres cut the margin to one goal (13-14) Audi replied quickly on a goal by Gonzalito, to take a two-goal lead (15-12).

Steve van Andel and his Orchard Hill boys took charge during the second half, displaying their best polo and dominating the match, while Alegria struggled to score. Julian Mannix’s team cut the margin to two goals in the sixth chukker (12-14), but Orchard Hill showed no mercy.

With time running out, Orchard Hill managed to tie the game: Polito Pieres picked the ball at midfield and scored for 15-14.

The nailbiting match ended with a goal by Facundo to tie at 4-all with only 4 seconds left on the clock.

The explosive combination between Facundo and Polito, very well supported by Ezequiel Martinez Ferrario, was strong enough to give Orchard Hill the victory and claim the first title of the Triple Crown in the United States.

The extra chukker started with a throw-in. A call against Orchard Hill awarded a 40 yards penalty, converted by Gonzalito Pieres for the win and the title.

Prior to the final, Nico Pieres scored the golden goal in extra chukker for Lechuza Caracas to win 12-11 and claim the the Subsidiary Les Armour Cup.

Al cierre de esta edición se disputaba la fase final del X Campeonato Mundial de la Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP) en Santiago de Chile.

Estados Unidos, Brasil, Chile e Inglaterra se clasificaron a las semifinales e iban en busca de las dos únicas plazas para la gran final.

Los cruces para las semifinales eran los siguientes: Estados Unidos vs. Inglaterra e Chile vs. Brasil La última jornada de clasificación del X Campeonato Mundial de Polo que organiza la Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP) y

que se disputa en el San Cristóbal Polo Club de Santiago de Chile arrojó los siguientes resultados: Estados Unidos superó por 9 a 7 a Brasil y se quedó con el primer lugar del Grupo B; mientras que Chile venció ajustadamente y en chukker suplementario a Pakistán por 11 a 10, con gol de oro de José M. Pereira Riesco y se ubicó primero en la zona A. De esta manera, en la Zona A las posiciones finales fueron las siguientes: Chile, 4 puntos;

Inglaterra. 2; y Pakistán, 0; en tanto que en la B, Estados Unidos terminó primero con 4; Brasil, segundo con 2; y Argentina tercero con 0.

El historial del torneo, que se inició en Buenos Aires en 1987, indica que Argentina es el máximo ganador, con 4 títulos, seguido por Brasil, que ostenta 3; mientras que Chile y Estados Unidos ganaron un trofeo cada uno.

Pereira Riesco, to take the top spot in Group A. The final standings for Group A were: Chile, 4 points; England, 2; and Pakistan, 0; while

in Group B they were United States, first with 4; Brazil, second with 2; and Argentina, third with 0.

The tournament’s record books, since the inaugural competition in Buenos Aires in 1987, show that Argentina is the most frequent winner with 4 titles, followed by Brazil with 3. Chile and the United States have also won a single trophy each.

El torneo de dos días, celebrado con el patronazgo del jeque Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Príncipe de la Corona de Dubai y presidente de Dubai Sports Club, tuvo lugar en el complejo Skydive Dubai del puerto deportivo de Dubái el 10 y 11 de abril.

“Creamos este evento como torneo oficial en 2004. Fue un éxito rotundo al que siguió Miami en 2005. Desde entonces se ha celebrado en 32 ciudades, a las que se ha unido Hong Kong como anfitrión por primera vez este año”, declara Sam Katiela, director ejecutivo y creativo de mamemo productions y fundador y organizador de la BPCD. “Todo comenzó en el mundo árabe, en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos y concretamente en Dubai. Es el único deporte inventado en el mundo árabe conocido en todo el mundo” añade Katiela.

“Dubái es famoso por el polo gracias a tres grandes clubs: Desert Palm, Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club y Ghantoot Polo and Racing Club. El jeque Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ali Al Bawardi y Mohammed Al Habtoor ya han hecho que el polo en Dubái posea una buena imagen como deporte”, señala.

Katiela nos explica que el polo en la playa ha aumentado su popularidad debido a que está más orientado hacia los espectadores.

“El polo en la playa resulta divertido y se ha convertido en todo un éxito a causa de su combinación de deporte y entretenimiento. En él, el espectador está mucho más cerca del partido. Toda la zona es mucho más pequeña, ya que hay reglas distintas para la arena. Ese es el motivo por el que la gente de todo el mundo está fascinada”, nos detalla.

La Beach Polo Cup Dubai es un evento fijo en Dubai, ya que es el último torneo de polo del año y de la temporada.

Katiela nos comenta que el año pasado hubo 30 millones de espectadores en las redes sociales. Este año, el interés de los medios ha aumentado enormemente y la gente lo tiene muy presente. Poco a poco, va haciéndose su sitio como un evento indispensable en Dubai.

Katiela ha prometido muchas sorpresas para el público durante el evento venidero y en la próxima edición de La Bocha Polo Magazine ofreceremos una amplia cobertura del mismo.

El inicio oficial del torneo tuvo lugar con un desfile a lo largo del JBR en el que tomaron parte los cuatro equipos participantes compuestos por jugadores de los Emiratos e internacionales.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Club, the two-day tournament was held at Skydive Dubai complex at Dubai Marina on April 10 and 11.

“We invented this sport as an official tournament in 2004. It was a big success and in 2005 Miami followed. Since then it has been held in 32 cities with Hong Kong joining as hosts for the first time this year,” said Sam Katiela, managing and creative director, mamemo productions and founder and organizer of BPCD. “It all started in the Arab world… in UAE… in Dubai. It is the only sport which has been invented and started in the Arab world and be known around the world,” added Katiela.

“Dubai is anyway known for polo because we have three big clubs – Desert Palm, Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club and Ghantoot Polo and Racing Club. Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ali Al Bawardi and Mohammed Al Habtoor have already made a great image for polo in Dubai as a sport” he said.

Katiela explained that beach polo has grown in popularity because it has become more spectator friendly.

“Beach polo became a fun sport and a success because it is a combination of sport and entertainment. In beach polo the viewer is much closer to the game.

The whole area is much smaller because in beach polo we play arena rules. That’s why people are fascinated around the world,” he explained.

The Beach Polo Cup Dubai is a fixed event in Dubai being the last polo tournament of year and also during this season.

Katiela explained that last year “we had 30 million social media viewers last year.

This year media interest is increasingly tremendously and people are putting it on a high place. Step by step we are getting more and more of a footprint as a must-be seen event in Dubai,”.

Katiela promised plenty of suprises for the public during the upcoming event and in the next edition of La Bocha Polo Magazine we will have a great coverage of the event.

A parade along JBR marked the official start of the tournament attended by the four participating teams comprising Emirati and international players.
