El siguiente destino es Barcelona donde gracias a la Fundación Scholas Ocurrentes y Pololine, la Bocha Polo Magazine vivió un fin de semana de ensueño con figuras del polo mundial, el FC Barcelona y el Gran Premio España de F1. Tres días de vértigo con los mejores del polo, fútbol y automovilismo. No cualquiera tiene ese privilegio por eso en las páginas de La Bocha Polo Magazine se lo contamos y mostramos. Argentina y Uruguay también tienen su escala. El primero para una nueva edición de la Copa de las Naciones y por el pequeño país sudamericano pasamos para recoger la historia de una Gran familia con ADN Polo como pocos, los Stirling. Polito Pieres nos hace volar con su habilidad con el taco y la bocha y nos cuenta en una divertida entrevista sus sentimientos y sueños en una temporada que lo tendrá cumpliendo su sueño de pequeño: jugar para Ellerstina. This flight does not have a final destination, because La Bocha Polo Magazine does not stop flying, travelling and bringing the best polo in the world to readers. There are plenty of stops, and all of them are of great interest to polo fans. The first is the United Kingdom, where the passenger (reader) can enjoy some great coverage of the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup, the first tournament of the season in the UK. The restless gaze of our photographer Pablo RamĂre allows us to see, recreate and enjoy the best of the polo action in the traditional English season. The next destination is Barcelona where, thanks to the Scholas Ocurrentes Foundation and Pololine, La Bocha Polo Magazine enjoyed a dream-lie weekend with figures from the world polo, FC Barcelona, and the Spanish F1 Grand Prix. They were three dizzying days with the top stars from the polo, football and racing worlds. Not everyone enjoy such a privilege, and that is why we will be telling you about it showing pictures in the pages of La Bocha Polo Magazine. There are also stops in Argentina and Uruguay. In Argentina, we look at a new edition of the Nations Cup and in the little South American country we will be stopping off to hear the story of a great family who really have polo in their DNA, the Stirlings. Polito Pieres makes us fly with his skills with the mallet and ball and explains his feelings and dreams in a fun interview about a season where he will be making a childhood dream come true by playing for Ellerstina. The last stop will in Sotogrande for a really frenetic spring season that is the ideal introduction for August which promises to be as good as ever.

King Power Foxes superó 11 a 10 en chukker suplementario a Dubai para adjudicarse el torneo británico por la Copa de la Reina, Queen´s Cup. Con la organización del Guards Polo Club llegó a su fin uno de los torneos más importantes en el calendario del circuito británico: la 55ª versión del certamen por la Copa de la Reina, Queen´s Cup que se llevó a cabo en las canchas que esa entidad posee en Windsor Park, a espaldas del castillo de Isabel II. La final, extremadamente pareja, quedó en manos de la formación de King Power Foxes, con los hermanos Gonzalo (h) y Facundo Pieres, que venció por un ajustado 11-10 a Dubai, con Pablo Mac Donough y Martin Valent (reemplazaron a los lesionados Adolfo Cambiaso –h– y Diego Cavanagh), en chukker suplementario, con gol de oro de Facundo. En los primeros chukkers, Pablo Mac Donough

se hizo dueño del juego, acompañado por Valent y el uruguayo Alejo Taranco, quienes disputaron cada bocha como si fuera la última y dejaban sin posibilidades de juego a los hermanos Pieres, sobretodo a Facundo, quien no podía hacerse de la bocha. De esta manera llegaron al quinto chukker con ventaja para Dubai por 7 a 5, pero en ese parcial hubo un vuelco muy importante: apareció Facundo en todo su esplendor, quien convirtió dos goles en el período, junto a otros dos de su hermano Gonzalo, para ganar el chukker por 4-1 y dar vuelta la final con sólo siete minutos de juego neto restantes. En el último, un penal corto de Gonzalo le daba dos goles de ventaja a King Power Foxes, pero Pablo Mac Donough –goleador de la final–, con dos ejecuciones de faltas, puso el partido 10-10

y mandó la definición al chukker suplementario. En el período extra, una gran carrera de Facundo Pieres a 32 segundos de iniciado, le dio el triunfo y el título a King Power Foxes. En tanto, como inicio de la jornada decisiva, la subsidiaria Cartier Trophy fue para el otro equipo de la organización King Power, con Alejandro Muzzio, Marcos Di Paola y Guillermo Willington, que superó por el mismo resultado de 11-10 y también en suplementario a Salkeld, con Joaquín Pittaluga y Juan M. Zavaleta (h), merced al gol de oro que anotó el patrón tailandés Apichet (Tal) Srivaddhanaprabha. En la ceremonia de premiación, Facundo Pieres, quien logró por cuarta vez este trofeo (tercera en forma consecutiva) fue distinguido con el Trofeo MVP al mejor jugador de la final; mientras que su yegua Kube, fue elegida entre los equinos.

The two King Power teams, patroned by brothers Top and Tal Srivaddhanaprabha, dominated the Cartier Queen’s Cup Finals on Sunday 14 June in Guards Polo Club, UK. King Power Foxes retained their unbeaten run in this 22-goal competition to receive the prestigious trophy from HM Queen Elizabeth. This victory, which went into extra time against a tough Dubai squad, was the second King Power win of the day. Earlier, King Power had won the subsidiary Cartier Trophy, also after extra time, a golden goal and an 11-10 score line. The packed grandstands at Guards Polo

Club appreciated two such exciting games. Dubai dominated the early part of the main final, even though they were without their talisman, the 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso. He had not recovered from injuries sustained in the semi-finals and his place was taken by fellow 10-goaler Pablo MacDonough, who had played for the UAE Polo Team who, ironically, Dubai had knocked out in the semi-finals. A change of team did not seem to affect MacDonough though and he produced an outstanding performance for Dubai, scoring the majority of their goals and penalties. The young Englishman, Hugo Lewis, had

another strong game for King Power Foxes too and was rewarded with a massive cheer from the crowd when he went up to receive his winner’s prize, an elegant Cartier watch. Dubai patron, Rashid Albwardya, also played a great game and was instrumental on many occasions in keeping King Power Foxes at bay. This is no easy feat as Top Srivaddhanaprabha’s team features the 10goal Pieres boys, Facundo and Gonzalito. Although Dubai were up 7-5 at half-time, it seemed clear that this game was still very open and could go either way. Facundo Pieres, who was later named

Most Valuable Player, a title he won last year when playing for Zacara, produced two lovely goals in the fifth, and when his brother Gonzalito converted two penalties, King Power went ahead. The best playing pony judges clearly saw this chukka as crucial as Facundo’s 10-yearold mare Cube, whom he had played in this chukka, was later named Cartier Best Playing Pony. This game was now really firing and this was reflected in the play, with some fast runs up the field from both sides, including a few horse races between MacDonough and Facundo Pieres. With the closeness of these two teams, it was inevitable that MacDonough would convert a 30-yard

penalty with just a minute left to go to level the scores, forcing the game into extra time. In the seventh King Power were rewarded after some excellent teamwork, with Gonzalito, Facundo and Top all contributing to the all-important golden goal. King Power had looked in control of their morning, sub final match for the Cartier Trophy, as they were leading Nick Clarke’s Salkeld 9-6 at the end of the fourth, after being 6-2 up after just two chukkas. However some strong play from former England captain Luke Tomlinson in the sixth to close the gap to 10-10, pushed this game into extra time too. Marcos Di Paola started the seventh with a great run

for King Power, only to lose the ball just before goal. Four top players then rode over the ball, adding more drama of this match, before patron Tal Srivraddhanaprabha was able to finish it off with a goal.

El Charity Polo Series 2015 que organiza la Fundación Scholas Ocurrentes visitó la ciudad de Barcelona para organizar un evento que quedará grabado en el mejor de los recuerdos. Con un Charity Match, que convocó a tres de los mejores jugadores de polo del mundo, Pablo Mac Donough, David Stirling y Eduardo Novillo Astrada, como cita principal, la Fundación Scholas Ocurrentes, Fundación Leo Messi, Pololine y el Real Club de Polo de Barcelona organizaron un fin de semana inolvidable. La agenda también incluyó una visita al Camp Nou para ver al FC Barcelona jugar ante la Real Sociedad, asistir a un entrenamiento del actual campeón de Europa y como broche final ser testigos del Gran Premio de Catalunya de Fórmula 1. El espectacular fin de semana, del cual La Bocha Polo Magazine fue testigo exclusivo, comenzó el viernes con el arribo a Barcelona de los polistas que formaron parte del

Charity Match desde diversas partes del mundo como Argentina, Italia e Inglaterra. Una distendida cena en el RCP Barcelona inauguró el viernes por la noche la agenda del evento. El sábado llegó el turno del Charity Match que enfrentó a los Amigos de Messi vs los Amigos de Scholas. Amigos de Messi contó con: Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Nacho Figueras, Pelayo Berazadi, Juan Cruz Adrogué, Hilario Figueras y Nicolás Ruíz Guiñazú. La formación Amigos de Scholas tuvo a Pablo Mac Donough, Pelón Stirling, Juan de Dios Pérez Serrano, Nicolás Rosendi, Alex Figueras y Lía Salvo, la mejor jugadora del mundo de polo femenino. La victoria fue para Amigos de Scholas por 7 a 6, pero el resultado es meramente anecdótico ya que el principal objetivo fue recaudar fondos para una buena causa. Previo al partido se realizó la ceremonia del olivo que simboliza la cultura del en-

cuentro y de la paz que pregona el Papa Francisco. Tras el partido, el grupo de polistas junto a representantes de Scholas Occurrentes, La Bocha Polo Magazine y allegados se dirigió al Camp Nou para ver la victoria de Barcelona sobre Real Sociedad por 2 a 0, con goles de Neymar y Pedro. El fin de semana se completó el domingo por la mañana con la visita al entrenamiento del Barcelona en la Ciudad Deportiva Sant Joan Despí, donde se tuvo un amable encuentro con las grandes figuras del Barça, Andrés Iniesta, Pedro y Javier Mascherano. El broche de oro del fin de semana fue la invitación del ayuntamiento de Barcelona a presenciar el Gran Premio de España de Fórmula 1, que se realizó en el circuito de Cataluña, cerrando un fin de semana deportivo completo para todos aquellos que viajaron generosamente a Barcelona para la segunda edición de la Charity Polo Series a beneficio de Scholas Occurrentes.

The 2015 Charity Polo Series organised by the Scholas Ocurrentes Foundation travelled to the city of Barcelona to hold an event that will live long in the memory. With the Charity Match, which featured three of the world’s best polo players, Pablo Mac Donough, David Stirling and Eduardo Novillo Astrada, as the main attraction, the Pope Francis’ Scholas Ocurrentes Foundation, the Leo Messi Foundation, Pololine and the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona put together an unforgettable event. The weekend’s itinerary also included a trip to the Camp Nou to see FC Barcelona in action against Real Sociedad, a visit to a training session with the newly crowned European champions and, to cap it all off, a chance to watch the Catalonia Formula One Grand Prix. The spectacular weekend, for which La Bocha Polo Magazine had exclusive coverage, began in Barcelona on Friday with the arrival of the polo players who would

be taking part in the Charity Match, with the participants travelling from various corners of the globe like Argentina, Italy and England. A relaxed dinner on Friday evening inaugurated the event. The Charity Match got underway on Saturday with a game that saw Amigos de Messi take on Amigos de Scholas. The first of theses teams consisted of Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Nacho Figueras, Pelayo Berazadi, Juan Cruz Adrogué, Hilario Figueras and Nicolás Ruíz Guiñazú. Meanwhile, Amigos de Scholas were made up of Pablo Mac Donough, Pelón Stirling, Juan de Dios Pérez Serrano, Nicolás Rosendi, Alex Figueras and Lía Salvo, the world’s best female polo player. The match ended with a 7-6 win for Amigos de Scholas, however, the result was of little importance as the main objective was to raise funds for the Scholas Foundation. Prior to the game, an olive tree was plan-

ted in a ceremony symbolising the culture of the encounter and the peace promoted by Pope Francis. Following the game, the group of polo players were joined by representatives from the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation, La Bocha Polo Magazine as well as by their intimate circle to see Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 2-0, a match in which Neymar and Pedro got the goals. The weekend closed out on Sunday morning with a trip to see Barcelona train in the Ciudad Deportiva Sant Joan Despí, where those in attendance were greeted by some of Barca’s household names, like Andrés Iniesta, Pedro and Javier Mascherano. The weekend finished with a flourish with an invitation from the Barcelona Town Hall to attend the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix race, which was held on the Catalonia circuit, thus closing a weekend packed full of sport for those who selflessly travelled to Barcelona for the second edition of the Charity Polo Series in aid of the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation.

Tras el convenio firmado con Scholas Ocurrentes, la Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP) está trabajando para realizar un encuentro de 80 goles en Noviembre.

Following the agreement signed with Scholas Ocurrentes, the Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP) is now working towards holding an 80-goal event in November.

Tras el convenio firmado oportunamente entre la Asociación Argentina de Polo y Scholas Ocurrentes, que es una entidad educativa de bien público, impulsada por iniciativa del Papa Francisco, que vincula la tecnología, el arte y el deporte para fomentar la integración social y la cultura del encuentro, la AAP está trabajando denodadamente para poder realizar el sábado 14 de noviembre de 2015, en la cancha 1 de la Catedral del Polo en Palermo, un nuevo test match de handicap perfecto, al cumplirse 40 años del aniversario del primer partido de 80 goles en la historia del polo argentino, que se realizó el 1º de Noviembre de 1975.

Following the opportunely signed agreement between the Asociación Argentina de Polo and Scholas Ocurrentes, an educational entity, launched by Pope Francis, where technology, arts and sports are used to encourage social integration and the culture of encounter, the AAP is now working tirelessly to host another perfect handicap test match on Saturday 14 November 2015, on the Catedral del Polo en Palermo’s main field, to mark the 40th anniversary of the first ever 80-goal polo match in Argentine history, an event which took place on 1 November 1975.

¿Cómo vivís este año tan especial y cómo manejás la ansiedad sabiendo lo que te espera en la Temporada Argentina? Es un año diferente y ya bastante ansioso por todo lo que va a llegar. Estoy con muchas ganas de que llegue la temporada en Argentina. Lo estaba esperando hace mucho. Estoy jugando la temporada en Inglaterra pero pensando mucho en Argentina, soy bastante ansioso así que me está costando no pensar en lo que viene. Trato de estar tranquilo y cuando querés acordarte ya llega septiembre, viene Tortugas y enseguida se viene el Abierto.

Alegría fue todo y siempre voy a estar agradecido con mis tres compañeros y toda la gente que bancaba de afuera que fueron muchos y con muy buena onda todos.

El pase a Ellerstina, los 10 goles de handicap, campeón de la Whitney Cup en EEUU y 10 goles también, ¿te dio tiempo para “digerir” tanta cosa? La verdad que se juntaron muchas cosas lindas. Primero los 10 goles de handicap en Argentina y Estados Unidos, que es algo muy lindo y nunca pensé que iba a llegar así de rápido. Contento por mi familia, mi padre y por los que me ayudaron. El pase a Ellerstina es impresionante, muy contento, con muchas ganas de empezar. La temporada en Estados Unidos fue muy linda, jugamos bien, ganamos un título y perdimos dos finales en tiempo suplementario que nos dejó un gusto amargo de una temporada que pintaba muy bien. Por eso los 10 goles los disfruté más en Argentina que en Estados Unidos.

¿Cómo sueñas tu debut con la Z? Queremos ganar pero primero voy a tratar de divertirme, jugar bien y obviamente ganar. Queremos ganar pero para lograrlo hay que divertirse y voy a aportar mi granito de arena por ese lado.

¿Qué significó Alegría? Todo para mí. Nunca me voy a olvidar de esta organización y el equipo que armamos. Empezamos con un equipo que era malísimo, los cuatro (risas), no teníamos ni posición ni nada y de repente nos armamos un equipo con mucha actitud, ganas y alegría, que eso fue lo que nos definió. Un color rosa de la camiseta que era también importante y la gente en Palermo nos empezó a bancar y terminamos llegando a una final del Abierto que cuando comenzamos con esta linda historia no pensábamos siquiera en ganar un partido.

¿Qué le puede aportar Mariano Aguerre al equipo? Mariano puede aportar muchísimo, yo estuve jugando caballos de la cría de Los Machitos en Estados Unidos, ahora me va a dar para Argentina. Hicimos un lindo equipo con Mariano y Nick Manifold, nos ayudamos entre los tres y me será de gran ayuda también en la temporada Argentina. También al equipo le va a aportar muchísimo. Tiene muchísima experiencia y está con una onda tremenda para ayudarnos por eso creo que el aporte de Mariano va a ser muy positivo.

¿Qué significa Ellerstina? Es mi sueño de chiquito. Soy hincha de Ellerstina y lo hubiese seguido siendo aunque no me eligiesen para jugar en el equipo. Tengo la suerte de poder jugar en el equipo del cual soy hincha y es un sueño para mí.

Se habla mucho de las posiciones del equipo, que Facundo va de 4, etc. Lo único seguro es que vos jugás de 1, ¿eso te da más tranquilidad para encarar la primera temporada con Ellerstina o no te cambia? Por ahora voy de 1, es mi posición natural. Quizás por ese lado estoy más tranquilo. Si me hubiesen dicho que voy de 2, 3 o 4 estaría más preocupado es verdad. Creo que las posiciones en el equipo van a llegar solas.

¿Se puede bajar a La Dolfina? Sin duda son el mejor equipo del mundo en la actualidad y de la historia calculo que también. Es un equipo impresionante con cuatro jugadores que pueden jugar en cualquier posición, que cuando uno está mal se van complementando y el otro tapa un mal día de su compañero y así siempre. De todas formas creo que se les puede ganar, pero no va a ser fácil. ¿Tuviste o tienes un espejo en el cual te reflejas o se refleja tu juego en el polo? La verdad que no, trato de ser yo mismo y me gusta ser diferente a todos. Sos el polista de “moda” en este momento, (por tu juego y por exposición en los medios) ¿te cambia en algo tu día a día? Que se yo, la verdad que está bueno jugar un poco con el circo que envuelve al polo, las redes sociales, etc, para cambiar un poco al polista tradicional. Están todos en familia, casados con hijos y a mí todavía no me toca así que me sigo divirtiendo un poco.

En Argentina tengo al Puma que es mi preferido y también tengo a Machito Sérpico que me lo quedé de la organización de Mariano y Nick y es uno de mis preferidos también. ¿Cómo te vas a preparar, en cuanto a caballos, para la Temporada Argentina? Tengo 11 caballos que voy a cuidar en Ellerstina. Luego Mariano Aguerre tiene 5 de su cría, Los Machitos, y Nacho Figueras tiene 5 o 6 de su cría, Yatay, así que con esos voy a empezar. Guardo un par de los míos para Hurlingham y Palermo y luego calculo que Ellerstina me pasará algunos caballos. Creo y espero que sea un año en el cual este bien montado.

¿Cómo es la organización de Polito, además de Argentina, tenés caballos en otros países? Tengo un arreglo en Estados Unidos con Mariano Aguerre y Nick Manifold y la cría Los Machitos, junté sus mejores caballos con los míos y fue lejos la mejor temporada que estuve montado. En Inglaterra estoy muy bien montado, compré varios caballos y salieron bien. Es duro montarse pero de a poco me voy organizando cada vez mejor.

¿EEUU, Inglaterra, Francia, Argentina, venís levantando trofeos por todos lados, cuando te veremos por Sotogrande otra vez? Todavía me faltan muchos trofeos que levantar, no tengo tantos. Es difícil para mi organizarme en todos lados, empecé hace poco a jugar en UK y Estados Unidos, apenas tres años y con la ayuda de mi padre nada más y obviamente fue muy complicado empezar. Mi tío Esteban Panelo me llevó a Austria por primera vez a los 18 y siempre le voy a estar agradecido y también a Guillermo Fernández Llanos que me llevó a Estados Unidos en el 2010 con Las Monjitas. Siempre me acuerdo de mi padre y esas dos personas y de lo importante que fueron en mis inicios. Empecé a jugar hace muy poco fuera de la Argentina, es difícil y no tengo la cantidad de caballos que tienen los otros 10 goles pero de a poco empezare a ganar más trofeos (risas)

¿Rolinga es uno de tus caballos preferidos? Es mi caballo preferido. Lo juego sólo en Inglaterra, no viaja y esta temporada es la mejor desde que lo vengo jugando desde 2012 y estoy

En cuanto a Sotogrande, iré cuando mi querido patrón Edouard Carmignac deje de jugar en Deauville (risas). La pasamos bien en Francia así que seguiremos jugando ahí por el momento.

Polito PIERES “I have been a fan of Ellerstina ever since I was little so it is A DREAM COME TRUE” How has this really special year been for you and how do you manage the pressure of knowing what awaits in the Argentinian season? It has been a different kind of year and already there is quite a lot of pressure about what is to come. I am really looking forward to the season in Argentina. I have been waiting for it for a long time. I am playing the season in England but thinking a lot about Argentina, I am quite anxious so it is difficult for me not to think about what is coming up. I try to stay calm, and before you know it September will be here, first there is Tortugas and immediately after, the Open. The move to Ellerstina, the 10 handicap goals, Whitney Cup champion in the United States and 10 goals too, have you had to time to digest all of that? The truth is that a lot of good things happened within a small space of time. First there were the 10 handicap goals in Argentina and the United States, which was really great and I never imagined I would get there so quickly. I am happy for my family, my father and everyone who helped me. The move to Ellerstina was big for me; I am very happy and really looking forward to starting. The season in the United States was really fantastic, we played well, we won a title and we lost two finals in added time, which left us with a bitter taste after a season that was shaping up really well. That is why I enjoyed the 10 goals more in Argentina than in the United States. What did Alegría mean for you? It meant everything. I will never forget that organisation and the team we put together. We began with a team that was really bad, we had no standing, nothing, and suddenly we put together a side with a lot of attitude, enthusiasm and joy, and that is what defined us. The pink shirt was also important and the people in Palermo began to get behind us and we ended up reaching an Open final, and when we began this lovely story we didn’t even think we could win a game. Alegría was everything and I am always going to be grateful to my three team mates and all of the people who supported us, and always with really good vibes.

What does Ellerstina mean for you? It is my childhood dream. I am a fan of Ellerstina and I would have followed them even if they didn’t pick me to play for their team. I am lucky to be able to play in a side that I am a fan of and it is a dream come true for me. How do you dream about your debut with Z? We want to win but first of all, I am going to have a good time, try to play well and obviously win. We want to win but in order to achieve that we have to have a good time and I am going to do my little bit to make that happen. There is a lot of talk about positions in the team, that Facu is playing in the 4 role, etc. The only certainty is that you are playing as 1, does that make you feel more at ease ahead of your first season with Ellerstina or does it not affect you? For now, I am going to play as 1, which is my natural position. Perhaps in that sense I am more at ease. It they had told me I was to play as 2, 3 or 4, I would definitely be more worried. I think that the positions in the team will sort themselves out. What contribution can Mariano Aguerre make to the team? Mariano can make a massive contribution, I was playing with horses from Los Machitos breeding centre in the United States, and now I will use them for Argentina. We had a great time with Mariano and Nick Manifold, we helped each other out among the three of us, and he will be a great help for me during the Argentinian season. He is also going to bring a huge amount to the team. He has a wealth of experience and he is at a great stage to be able to help us so I think Mariano’s contribution will be really positive. Can La Dolfina be beaten? There is no doubt that they are the best side in the world at the moment, and I also reckon, they are the best side ever. They are an impressive side with four players who can play in any position, and when one of them isn’t doing well, they complement each other, and another

one will cover for a team mate’s bad day and it is always like that. In any case, I think that they can be beaten, but it will not be easy.

Do you have a mirror that you see yourself in, or which reflects your polo game? The truth is that I don’t, I try to be myself and I like to be different to everyone else.

In terms of horses, how are you going to prepare for the Argentinian Season? I have 11 of my own horses that I am going to look after in Ellerstina. Then, Mariano Aguerre has 5 from his breeding centre, Los Machitos and Nacho Figueras has 5 or 6 from his horse centre, Yatay, so I am going to start with them. I have a few of my own horses for Hurlingham and Palermo and then I reckon that Ellerstina will give me horses. I believe and hope that I will be well set up.

You are the “fashionable” polo player at the moment (because of your game and media coverage), does that change anything about your daily life? Well, what do I know but I honestly think it is good to play a little with the circus surrounding polo, the social networks etc., in order to change the traditional image of polo. Everyone has a family, married with children, and I am not in that position yet, so I can continue to have a bit of fun. What is Polito’s organisation like, aside from Argentina, you have horses in other countries? I have an agreement in the United States with Mariano Aguerre and Nick Manifold and the Los Machitos breeding centre. I brought their best horses together with mine and it was my best riding season by far. In England I am really well set up, I bought several horses and they have turned out well. It is hard to get set up but I am increasingly better organised. Rolinga is one of your favourite horses? He is my favourite horse. I only play with him in England, he does not travel, and this season was his best since I started playing with him in 2012 and I am really happy. In Argentina I have Puma which is my favourite and I also have Machito Sérpico, a horse I

The United States, England, France, Argentina, you have been winning trophies everywhere, when will we next see you in Sotogrande? There are still a lot of trophies I need to win, I don’t have that many. It is difficult for me to organise my schedule all over the place. Not along ago, barely three years, I began to play in the UK and the United States, thanks to my father and obviously it was difficult at the start. My uncle Esteban Panelo took me to Austria for the first time when I was 18 and I will always be very grateful to him, and also to Guillermo Fernández Llanos who took me to the U.S. in 2010 with Las Monjitas. I always remember my Dad and those two people and how important they were for me at the start of my career. I only started playing outside of Argentina very recently, it is difficult and I do not have the number of horses that the other 10 goal players have but I will soon begin to win more trophies (laughs). As for Sotogrande, I will go whenever my beloved boss Edouard Camignac leaves Deauville (laughs). We have a good time in France so we will continue to play there for the moment.

Con el partido entre Argentina e Inglaterra, se cerró la VI Serie Internacional de la Copa de las Naciones. Argentina venció al campeón defensor Inglaterra por 13 a 10 en el último partido del certamen y es el nuevo campeón (Progresión Argentina: 3-0, 6-3, 8-4, 10-5, 12-7 y 13-10) Mucha gente en la cancha 1 de Palermo, en un sábado de otoño más caluroso de lo normal, fue el marco de la última jornada de la Copa de las Naciones, la serie de polo internacional que organiza la Asociación Argentina de Polo, y que tuvo la participación de tres equipos de hasta 26 goles de handicap. En esta edición, Argentina tuvo su revancha y venció a Inglaterra por 13 a 10, dominando el partido de principio al fin con un muy buen trabajo de equipo, en el que se destacó la potencia de Alejandro Muzzio en ataque, autor de siete goles, y que fue fundamental a la hora de sacar importantes diferencias desde el arranque. Inglaterra por su parte, tuvo buenos momentos, en los que trató de acercarse en el marcador, con los goles de Ollie Cudmore

y Max Charlton. Pero también se les hizo difícil pasar la férrea defensa argentina a cargo de Paco de Narvaez y Matias Benoit. Argentina llegó al half time arriba por 8 a 4, y aunque el partido se puso algo trabado, con muchas faltas que derivaron en penales, Argentina logró mantener su ventaja, que pareció un poco amenazada en el último chukker, cuando Inglaterra logró remontar un 7-12, aunque el esfuerzo no alcanzó y Argentina logró llevarse el título por quinta vez. Previo a la definición entre Argentina e Inglaterra, se realizó una exhibición de minis, a un chukker. Participaron siete pequeños futuros cracks del polo: Los mini polistas de Fucci Polo que participaron fueron: Rufino Merlos (7 años), Paco de Narváez (7), Lorenzo (7) y Pedro Chavanne (4), Antonio Aguerre (6), Salvador Bayugar (6), León Donoso, Elina Braun y Azucena Uranga. Por otra parte, la Copa de las Naciones, para menores, fue para Argentina, que venció a Resto del Mundo en un muy buen partido a cuatro chukkers, por 3 a 1.

The game between Argentina and England drew a close to the Sixth International Series of the Nations Cup. Argentina beat the reigning champions England 13-10 in the last game of the competition and are now the new champions (Argentinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progression: 3-0, 6-3, 8-4, 10-5, 12-7 and 13-10). A packed centre field in Palermo, on an uncharacteristically warm autumn Saturday, was the setting for the Nations Cup, the international polo series organised by the

Argentine Polo Association, which included the participation of three teams with 26goal handicaps. Argentina exacted their revenge in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edition of the event by defeating England 13-10 in a game they dominated from start to finish thanks to a very good team performance, the highlight of which came through the attacking prowess of Alejandro Muzzio, who scored seven goals and played a key role in terms of extending the

gap between the sides from the very beginning of the encounter. England, for their part, had some good spells in which they tried to narrow the deficit with goals from Ollie Cudmore and Max Charlton. However, they also had difficulty in breaking down the solid Argentine defence made up of Paco de Narvaez and Matias Benoit. Argentina led 8-4 at half time, and although there were a lot of fouls during the

last three chukkers resulting in many penalty conversions, Argentina still managed to remain in front and improve on their advantage. However, England managed to pull the score back to 7-12 in the last chukker, but despite their best efforts, Argentina were able to lift the trophy for the fifth time. Meanwhile, the kids version of the Nations Cup also went to Argentina, who beat the Rest of the World in an excellent game of four chukkers that ended 3-1.

España se adjudicó la primera edición del International Day-Copa Federación al vencer a Irlanda por 15 a 7 en un gran partido de polo disputado este mediodía en la cancha principal de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club. El equipo formado por Pablo Mora-Figueroa, Ignacio y Luis Domecq y Martín Iturraspe fue demasiado para el cuarteto irlandés que pese a luchar los seis chukkers del partido nunca pudo contrarrestar el poderío del equipo español. Una excelente primera parte, con altísimo nivel de juego y gran poder ofensivo, le brindó a España una ventaja de 8 a 2 y una cómoda renta para la segunda mitad del encuentro. Si bien en los chukkers finales los ir-

landeses recuperaron y se acercaron en el marcador, el triunfo español nunca estuvo en peligro. SPAIN WINS THE FEDERATION CUP Spain ran out winners in the first edition of the International Day-Federation Cup after beating Ireland 15-7 in a match played at midday on the centre field of Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club. The team consisting of Pablo MoraFigueroa, Ignacio and Luis Domecq and Martín Iturraspe proved too strong for the Irish foursome who, despite putting up a fight throughout the entire six chukkers, were never able to overpower the solid Spanish side. During the excellent opening few chukkers, the Spanish team’s very high level of performance and attacking prowess allowed them to take an 8-2 lead to ensure a nice cushion for

themselves for the remainder of the encounter. While the Irish players turned things around somewhat during the final chukkers and began

to narrow the gap on the scoreboard, Spain’s win was never in doubt. This challenge, known as International Polo Day-Federation Cup, was organised by the Real Federación Española de Polo and the Santa María Polo Club, and was also supported by the country’s Superior Sports Council and Spagnolo, the federation’s official sponsor.

El departamento de Río Negro en Uruguay siempre ha dado importantes polistas, los Stirling sin lugar a dudas se ganan los mayores aplausos. Por eso hablar de ellos significa conocer toda una historia de este deporte. Los sacrificios, los esfuerzos, la esperanza, todo se refleja en esta familia de tradición polística que comenzó con Don David Stirling Díaz y Federico Stirling, siguió con David “Davicito” Stirling Crevoisier y continúa hoy con los éxitos internacionales de “Pelón”, Santi y “Jejo”. La Bocha Polo Magazine tuvo el privilegio de reunir a “Davicito” Stirling y sus hijos David y Santiago y su sobrino Alejo Taranco Stirling en Sotogrande para conocer de primera mano una historia con muchos capítulos en el mundo del polo. Recortes de prensa de la época, relatos de Davicito y los testimonios de Jejo, Pelón y Santi sirven para hacerse una idea de la importancia que tuvo el polo en la familia Stirling y cómo fue cobrando relevancia internacional de la mano de Davicito primero y de sus hijos y Jejo después. El ADN polo de la familia Stirling es muy fuerte y comienza con Don David. Cuando uno repasa la historia y ve que fue el primer uruguayo en la historia en llegar a los 10 goles de handicap y que además ganó durante 25 años consecutivos el Abierto de su país no es de soprender que décadas más tarde su nieto, “Pelón”, lograse alcanzar los 10 goles en un polo super profesionalizado y obtuviese dos Triple Corona consecutivas con La Dolfina en Argentina, el mayor logro que puede alcanzar un polista. Después de Don David, el polo en la sangre de los Stirling continuó circulando con Davicito, el mayor de sus nueve hijos. David Stirling Crevoisier llegó a jugar siete goles de handicap y fue un destacado polista jugando en infinidad de países. Fue el primero de la familia en vivir para y por el polo. Su nombre y persona fue importante dentro de la cancha pero también lo fue fuera ella, logrando, entre otros importantes logros, colocar a Sotogrande en el mapa mundial del polo.

Davicito llegó a Sotogrande en 1984 y con mucho esfuerzo, dedicación y hasta una peste equina, logró desde el Santa María Polo Club organizar lo que es hoy uno de los mejores torneos del mundo. Realizar una de las canchas más elogiadas del mundo: Los Pinos y convocar a las grandes figuras del polo mundial como los hermanos Heguy, Adolfo Cambiaso, Lolo Castagnola, entre otros, que llegaron por primera vez a Sotogrande gracias a su gestión. Su visión para organizar, establecer y fomentar el polo en el lugar del mundo que se le pida es de 10 goles. “Nadie en el polo lo puede hacer mejor que él”, dice con orgullo su hijo Pelón. Pero comenzemos por el principio, con los hermanos David y Federico Stirling y algunas reflexiones y datos que nos dejan recortes de prensa y documentos de su época.

DON DAVID STIRLING DÍAZ En 1950 se mete de lleno en la práctica de los deportes siendo el polo su predilecto y quien lo lleva a recorrer gran parte de América y Europa. Entre los países en los cuáles Don David jugó al polo se encuentran Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Sudáfrica, España e Inglaterra. Fue campeón nacional con Río Negro, formación que logró el título de mejor durante 25 años consecutivos, desde 1948 a 1973. Este cuarteto, el gran equipo de polo uruguayo de todas las épocas, también venció a un seleccionado de Argentina en su propio país. 10 GOLES DE HANDICAP David Stirling Díaz fue el primer uruguayo en alcanzar los 10 goles de handicap. Su nieto David “Pelón” Stirling Fernández

también alcanzó la máxima valorización y la ostenta en la actualidad honrando la tradición de su abuelo como grandes cracks del polo. Un recorte de prensa de la época relata la distinción de los 10 goles para David Stirling Díaz de la siguiente manera: “Todos estamos de acuerdo en que el capitán rionegrense debía dejar los nueve goles.. Pero se necesitaba que alguien llevase la ponencia a la reunión anual de handicap..Considero..debemos hoy tratar en primer lugar un handicap de un jugador a quien todos reconocemos como el mejor de cuantos hemos visto en los campos de juego y con quien debemos hacer justicia..Un significativo murmullo pobló la sala y apenas se oyó el nombre de David Stirling Díaz todos apoyaron con espontánea resolución. Y de inmediato se alzó una voz que propuso votarlo con un aplauso...Fueron segundos emocionantes, que han de pasar a la historia del polo como un detalle trascendente”. EL PRESENTE Éstos tres uruguayos, Pelón, Jejo y Santiago, con fuertes raíces polísticas en Argentina y Sotogrande, han sabido tomar el testigo de su abuelo Don David, de su padre y tio Davicito y engrandecer aún más la leyenda. El presente de los tres es muy auspicioso y sólo basta con recorrer el palmarés de Pelón, uno de siete jugadores con la máxima valorización (10 goles) que hay en la actualidad, para darse cuenta de ello. Alejo, “Jejo”, también lleva un 2015 de ensueño. Al nacimiento de su tercer hijo, Alejo jr., se le suman un título de US Open y una final de la Queens Cup con Dubai. Juntos, Pelón y Jejo, hicieron levantar la vista a varios cuando en Septiembre de 2007, formando parte del equipo uruguayo, vencieron a Argentina por 13 a 9 en Palermo, la Catedral del Polo. Otro dato indicativo del buen momento de ambos, es que de los tres torneos más importantes del calendario del polo que se han jugado hasta la fecha, Abierto Argentino, US Open y Queen´s Cup, Pelón ha sido el MVP del Abierto Argentino y Jejo del US Open ALEJO “Jejo” TARANCO Criame en La Esmeralda (la finca de la Fa-

milia Stirling en Young, Uruguay) junto a mi abuelo fue una gran influencia para mí y para mis inicios en el polo. En mis comienzos me dio caballos, me fomentó el polo pero siempre de una forma, que es tradición familiar, de ponerte las cosas al alcance de la mano pero sin facilitarte ni solucionar nada. Hoy agradezco esa enseñanza y si lo tengo que transmitir a mis hijos lo haría de la misma manera, logrando las cosas con mucho esfuerzo y sacrificio. Mi primer viaje con el polo lo hago a Inglaterra en el 2003 para ayudar a Justo, el petisero de Pelón, durante la temporada. Al año siguiente con un lote de caballos que Pelón compra en Uruguay arrancamos para Argentina. Con Pelón queríamos que uno de los dos dejase de estudiar para ir a juntarse con el otro. Pero David y mi madre nos frenaban y nos hacían estudiar. Hasta que llegó un año, cuando cursaba segundo de Veterinaria, que la propuesta fue seria y me metí de lleno en el polo. Una de las cosas que más aprendí y que me inculcaron, es que si iba a hacer algo se tenía que hacer con seriedad y responsabilidad y en eso, Davicito nos ha insistido mucho. Él, Davicito, siempre ha sido un gran referente, influye en todo sentido y aunque se haya retirado de las “grandes ligas” siempre está para nosotros. En el 2004 viajé a Alemania a jugar, luego vino Estados Unidos, pero siempre peleándola. Hice todo el circuito, bajo, mediano, alto. Anduve por todos lados pero sin duda que el esfuerzo valió la pena. Estoy encantado de la manera que me tocó hacerlo y si tengo que elegir haría el mismo camino.

El ADN polo de la familia Stirling es muy fuerte Dentro de lo que la peleamos también tuvimos la suerte de tener una base grande en Sotogrande que ayudaba mucho. La verdad que cuando empecé, nunca me hubiese imaginado ganar el US Open o jugar la final de la Reina. Además de todo lo que ha hecho Pelón y de lo que significa para mí, Adolfo Cambiaso ha sido también muy importante en mi carrera. Me ha dado oportunidades y que he tenido la suerte de aprovecharlas y eso ha llevado a que me siga llamando para jugar con él. SANTIAGO STIRLING El polo ha estado en casa desde siempre. Lo viví desde que nací, en Sotogrande donde papá estaba como manager de Santa María Polo Club y mi madre también trabajaba en el club. Me gustaba mucho acompañar a mi padre al trabajo y como había polo prácticamente todo el año me iba a las caballerizas todo el día. Comencé a taquear a los 8 años, lo hacía después del colegio, los fines de semana y lógicamente en verano con mayor intensidad. Cuando Pelón comenzó a jugar profesionalmente yo tenía 10 años y me iba a ayudarlo.

Mi dedicación al polo se dio naturalmente, no se me cruzó nunca no dedicarme a esto. Me críe y absorví polo desde que nací, además es lo que me gusta hacer. Mi padre jamás influyó en la decisón de jugar ni me presionó para hacerlo. En lo que sí siempre nos insistió es en las formas. En la dedicación y responsabilidad hacia el trabajo. En la vida nos enseñó todo, en el polo jamás se metió. Siempre soñé con poder jugar con mi hermano y con Jejo y gracias al crecimiento del Pelón como jugador y de su organización fue posible. Lo que sí no imaginaba era que Pelón haya logrado todo lo que alcanzó, que es realmente impresionante. PELÓN STIRLING La influencia de mi padre fue más en cómo encarar mi carrera de polista que en el juego en sí, donde nunca se metió. Mis padres me inculcaron siempre a dar todo y a ser lo más franco posible. La educación que me dieron mis padres es lo más importante que me ha quedado de ellos y lo que más les agradezco. Papá habrá sido duro en varios momentos pero hoy en día se lo agradezco porque si he llegado a hacer algo bien en el polo es gracias a su forma de educarme y criarme. El polo en la familia viene ya de varias generaciones, papá fue el primero en vivir del polo y nosotros hemos seguido ese camino, trabajar en el mundo del polo. Creo que debe haber pocas personas en el mundo del polo que sepan, como sí lo sabe hacer mi Viejo, en cómo proyectar o armar un lugar de polo. Tiene una visión que es una envidia.

Polo is a sport full of tradition and dynasties, especially in Argentina where they are the main driving forces behind the sport, and have been and continue to be the promoters of this discipline. To talk of Pieres, Cambiaso, Heguy and so forth is to talk about the history of polo. The Río Negro Department in Uruguay has always been a hotbed of polo-playing talent, however, without a shadow of a doubt it is the Stirlings who have won the most plaudits. So great is their legacy that speaking about them is akin to understanding the sport’s history. The values of sacrifice, hard work and hope are all reflected in this family with such an outstanding polo-playing pedigree, a legacy that began with the feats of Don David and Federico Stirling, which were then followed up by those of Davicito and which continues to this days with the international achivements of “Pelón”, Santiago and “Jejo”. La Bocha Polo Magazine had the honour of meeting with David “Davicito”, his sons David and Santiago, and his nephew Alejo in Sotogrande in order to find out about their extensive history in the world of polo at first hand. News clippings from back in the day, accounts from Davicito and stories from Jejo, Pelón and Santi give an indication of just how big an influence the Stirling family has had on polo and what it has been like gaining international acclaim, first through Davicito in Sotogrande and then through his sons and Jejo’s achievements of lifting the world’s most prestigious trophies. The Stirling family’s polo DNA is extremely strong and traces back to Don David. When you look through the history books and sees that he was the first Uruguayan of all time to attain a 10-goal handicap as well as win his country’s Open 25 years in row, you cannot then be surprised to find out that decades later his grandson, Pelón, has also managed to reach a 10-goal handicap in this ultra professionalised era, as well as clinch two straight Triple Crowns with La Dolfina in Argentina, the greatest achievement any polo player could hope for. Polo remained coursing through the Stirlings’ veins with Davicito, the eldest of Don David’s nine children. David Stirling Crevoisier attained seven goals and while he was an outstanding polo player, who competed in vast number of countries, his name resonated even more away from the polo fields, which, among other achivements, contributed on putting Sotogrande on the world polo map.

Davicito arrived to Sotogrande in 1984 and with a lot of hard work, dedication and even horse sickness to contend with, he managed, from the Santa María Polo Club, to put together what is now considered one of the world’s greatest tournaments, as well as build one of the most beloved fields by polo players, Los Pinos, and attract some of the sport’s biggest names – the Heguy brothers, Adolfo Cambiaso, Lolo Castagnola, among others – to Sotogrande for the first time thanks to his huge effort. But we will start at the beginning, with the brothers David and Federico and with some glimpses at the past and stats that have been afforded to us by newspaper clippings and articles from that period. DON DAVID STIRLING DÍAZ He dived head first into training in 1950, with polo being his favourite sport and the one that allowed him to travel through much of the Americas and Europe. The list of countries Don David has played polo in includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Spain and England. He was national champion with Río Negro, the team he won the title with for 25 years straight, between 1948 and 1973. This foursome, the greatest Uruguayan polo team of all time, even managed to beat the Argentine national side on their own turf. 10-GOAL HANDICAP David Stirling Díaz was the first Uruguayan, and the only one for many decades, to achieve a 10-goal handicap. His grandson, David “Pelón” Stirling Fernández also attained this milestone a few years ago and is currently living up to the reputation set out by his grandfather as one of the most formidable polo talents around. A newspaper clipping speaks of David Stirling Díaz’s 10-goal accomplishment in the following way: “We all agree that it is time the Río Negro man moved on from nine goals… However, someone needed to address the annual handicap meeting… I ask for permission –this delegate stated- to add an alternate motion to the running order with which we have always followed at these meetings. I think we should first tackle the matter of the handicap belonging to a player who we all recog-

nise as the best we have seen in action and to whom we owe this consideration… The room descended into a cacophony of whispers and as soon as David Stirling Díaz’s name was uttered, there was unanimous support for the spontaneous motion. And then a voice spoke up immediately proposing that the matter be voted on with an applause… Those exhilarating seconds will surely go down in the polo history books as a landmark event”. THE PRESENT DAY In a world where Argentine polo players are “lords and masters” and where names like Cambiaso, Pieres and Heguy have sustained, the surname Stirling has been growing in stature for many years. These three Uruguayans – Pelón, Jejo and Santiago –, with their strong ties in Argentina and Sotogrande, have been able to carry on their grandfather’s and fathers torch and add to their family’s legendary status. All three are enjoying a lot of success at the moment and you need only look through the trophy collection belonging to Pelón, one of only seven players still in action with the highest possible rating (10 goals), to appreciate that fact. Alejo, “Jejo”, is also having a dream 2015. To add to the birth of his third child, Alejo junior, he also clinched the US Open title with Valiente and the great Adolfo Cambiaso, as well as reach the final of the Queens Cup with Dubai. And the year of polo has just gotten underway. Together Pelón and Jejo earned a lot of attention back in September 2007 with the Uruguayan national team when they beat Argentina 13-9 in Palermo, the Cathedral of Polo. Another non-trivial fact pointing to the fantastic form both are enjoying is that in the last three most prestigious tournaments on the poloing calendar they took part in the Argentine Open, the US Open and the Queen’s Cup - two of the three MVP titles were awarded to them: Pelón in the Argentine Open and Jejo in the US Open. ALEJO TARANCO Growing up in La Esmeralda (the Stirling family’s estate in Young, Uruguay) with my

grandfather really influenced me to get started with polo. In the early stages he gave me ponies, encouraged me to play polo but always in a way, which is now a family tradition, of providing me with the opportunity but never making it easy for me or doing it for me. I’m thankful for those lessons now and if I had to show my children how to do it, I’d do the exact same way. You learn through a lot of hard work and sacrifice. My first polo trip was to England in 2003 to assist Justo, Pelón’s horse worker, for the season. The following year we set off for Argentina with a herd of horses Pelón had bought. Myself and Pelón wanted one of us to drop our studies in order to join up with the other. However, David and my mother stopped us from doing that and made us continue with our studies. The time came, when I was in second year of a veterinary course and working for David’s organisation, when things became really serious and I decided to focus fully on polo. One of the biggest lessons instilled in me was that if you’re going to do something you have to take it seriously and treat it with the upmost amount of responsibility. Davicito has always been insistent with us about taking the work seriously and being dedicated. Davicito has always been a figure to look up to, an inspiration in every sense of the word and, while he may have bowed out of the “big leagues”, we will always regard him as a legend. In 2004 I travelled to Germany to play, then I went to the USA, but was always competing. I travelled the whole circuit, to the small, medium-sized and big events. I went everywhere but there is no question that it was worth the effort.

I love the way in which I had to do it and if I had the choice, I’d do it exactly the same way. To go along with the fight we had undertaken to prove ourselves, we also had the good fortune of having a big base in Sotogrande, which helped us out a lot. To be honest, when I started I never thought I’d win the US Open or play in the final of the Queen’s Cup. Along with everything Pelón has done and everything he means to me, Adolfo Cambiaso has also played an extremely important role in my career. He is someone who gave me a lot of opportunities, which I was luckily enough to make the most of, and to this day he still calls on me to play with him. SANTIAGO STIRLING Polo has always been a part of home life. I’ve been involved since birth, growing up in Sotogrande where my father was the manager of the Santa María Polo Club and my mother also worked at the club. So polo was part of our everyday lives. I used to love going to work with my father and, given that polo was played practically all year round, everyday I’d visit the stables. I started using a mallet when I was 8-years-old, after school, on weekends and obviously even more during the summer holidays. I was 10 when Pelón started playing professionally and would go to help him as well as Justo and Marcelo, his horse workers. My dedication to polo came naturally to me, it never occurred to me to not dedicate myself to the sport. I grew up absorbing polo since birth, and to add to that it’s what I like doing. My father never influenced my decision to play, nor did he ever put pressure on me to get involved. What he did always insist on though

was the way in which I did things, in terms of my level of commitment and the degree of responsibility I showed towards my work. He thought us everything about how to live, but never got involved with our polo playing. I always dreamed about playing with my brother and with Jejo, and thanks to Pelón’s development as a player, as well as that of his organisation, it suddenly became a possibility. What I never expected to happen though is that Pelón would achieve what he has, which is really impressive. It’s hard now to appreciate all the good things that have happened to us, especially Pelón and Jejo, because polo shows no mercy and you need to be fully focused on your work. But there’s no question that when you have a moment to relax or are on your holidays, you reflect on these things and appreciate just how great this has all been. PELÓN STIRLING My old man did not have much influence on my polo game but he did influence how I approached my career as a polo player, in terms of whether it was what I really wanted to do and have as a job. Both of my parents always taught me to give everything and always be as honest as possible. The education that my parents gave me is the most important thing I took from them and what I am most grateful for. Dad might have been tough at various points but now I am grateful to him because if I have managed to do something good in polo, it is thanks to his way of educating me and bringing me up. Polo has been a part of our family for several generations, Dad was the first to earn his living from polo and we have followed that path by working in the polo world. I don’t think there are many people in the world of polo who know as well as my old man how to plan or set up a polo club. His vision is enviably good.

Rashid Al Habtoor, uno de los patrones más importantes en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, ha hecho una rápida visita a Sotogrande para apoyar a su hijo, Khalaf, que juega en los torneos de bajo handicap del Santa María Polo Club. Durante su visita pudo dedicar tiempo a hablar con La Bocha Polo Magazine sobre la pasada temporada de polo en los Emiratos, la evolución de la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series y de sus planes para este año y la siguiente temporada.

Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series “Creo que hicimos una buena temporada, ya que contar con 10 organizaciones con un handicap de 18 goles para jugar no es algo sencillo de llevar a cabo pero la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series lo logró. Dubái es uno de los sitios más importantes del mundo para el polo y me enorgullece decirlo. Las organizaciones trajeron sus mejores jugadores y caballos para el evento, por lo que ha sido una temporada magnífica y estamos deseando que empiece la próxima. Mi hermano, Mohammed, hizo un trabajo estupendo y tenemos que darle las gracias, tanto a él como al resto de patrones: el jeque Falah, que sigue siendo un líder en polo con Ghantoot, la jequesa Maitha con UAE Polo, Ali Albwardy de Desert Palm que cuenta con dos equipos con sus hijos Tariq y Rashid, Saeed Bin Drai, Amr Zedan, Faris Al Yabhouni, el sultán Edrees y muchos otros patrones que juegan en Dubái para ofrecer un apoyo continuo y hacer que cada temporada sea mejor. Mahra Polo Tuvimos mala suerte al principio de la temporada ya que Marcos Araya se lesionó pero por

fortuna Joaquín Pittaluga se unió al equipo y tuvo un rendimiento fantástico. Compramos algunos caballos nuevos, tuvimos una gran reorganización y resultó bueno para nosotros. Estamos deseando que llegue el año próximo, ya que Mahra tendrá dos equipos en la Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. Yo tendré un equipo y mi hijo Captain (Khalaf) el otro. Además, estamos pensando comprar entre 30 y 40 caballos. Como es habitual, mi equipo estará gestionado por Nacho González y el equipo de Captain lo estará por Justo del Carril. Estas son buenas noticias para nosotros pero también para la temporada en Dubái, ya que contará con otro equipo participante en la serie. Esperamos que la participación de mi hijo Captain en la temporada anime a otros patrones a continuar motivando a sus hijos a jugar, tal como ya hacen Ali Albwardy, Saeed Bin Drai y mi hermano Mohammed con sus hijos. Esto también aumentará el nivel y la cantidad de equipos. Proyectos Dubái no tiene límites y lo mismo ocurre con el polo. Vamos a inaugurar nuestro propio club de polo, Al Habtoor Polo & Resort, con

En mi opinión, una competición con un handicap de 18 goles está bien, así al menos no tenemos que aumentar el nivel durante los próximos años. En Europa, transportar caballos de un país a otro es muy fácil pero en Dubái es distinto. Cada patrón tiene que ofrecer montura a los profesionales y eso no es sencillo. Creo que deberíamos hacer más torneos de bajo y medio handicap, para dar una oportunidad de participar en la temporada de Dubái a otros patrones y jugadores. Su idea es recuperar la tienda de comestibles de toda la vida para ofrecer y servir productos sanos y naturales de todo el mundo a comunidades locales. “La gente debe comer y beber de forma saludable por eso hemos creado The Farmers Garden. Rashid Al Habtoor, one of the most important patrons in the UAE, made a quick visit to Sotogrande to support his son, Khalaf, playing in the Santa María Polo Club low goal tournaments. During his visit he made some time to speak with La Bocha Polo Magazine about the past UAE Polo Season, the evolution of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series and his plans for this year and the next season. Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series “I think we had a very good season, having 10 organizations of 18 goals handicap playing is not an easy thing to carry out but the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series managed to do it. Dubai is know one of the most important polo places in the world and I´m very proud to say that. The organizations brought the best players and horses for the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, it´s had been a great season and we are looking forward for the next season to start. My brother, Mohammed, made a great job and we have to thank him and all the patrons, Sheik Falah, still the leader in polo, with Ghantoot, Sheika Maitha with UAE Polo, Ali Albwardy from Desert Palm putting two teams with his son´s Tariq and Rashid, Saeed Bin Drai, Amr Zedan, Faris Al Yabhouni, Sultan Edrees and many other patrons that play in Dubai for the continuous support and for making every season better and better. Mahra Polo We had bad luck at the beggining of the season with Marcos Araya injured but luckily Joaquín

Pittaluga join the team and made a great performance. We bought some new horses, we had a big organization, it was good for us and we are looking forward for next year where Mahra will put two teams in the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. I will have one team and my son Captain (Khalaf) the other team. Also we are looking forward to buy between 30 to 40 horses. My team will be managed as usual by Nacho Gonzalez and Captain´s team will be managed by Justo del Carril. This is good news for us but also for the Dubai season that will have another team taking part of the Series. With my son Captain now taking part of the season we hope this will push other patrons to continue motivating their sons to play, just like Ali Albwardy, Saeed Bin Drai and my brother Mohammed already do with their sons. This will increase the level and quantity of teams also. Projects Dubai has no limit and in polo is the same. We are opening our own polo club, Al Habtoor Polo & Resort, with a great five stars resort and 4

polo fields, and with that we can continue improving the level and handicap of our season. In my opinion 18 goals handicap competition is ok, we do not have to increase the level at least for the next years. In Europe it´s very easy to transport horses from any country to the other but in Dubai it´s different. In Dubai every patron has to mount every proffesional and that´s not such an easy thing to do. I think we should also make more tournaments of low and medium goal, to give opportunity to other patrons and players to take part of the Dubai Season. The Farmers Garden The Farmers Garden was founded by Rashid Al Habtoor. His vision is to bring back the old school grocery store to provide and serve the local community that offers healthy and natural produce from around the world. “People must eat and drink healthy that´s why we created The Farmers Garden. We are very enthusiastic with the project. We already opened three shops in Dubai and we are opening a fourth, a very big one, and investing almost U$S 20 million in all the global project.

Como ellos podemos encontrar otros jugadores como Rosendo Torreguitar, actual alumno de M5, Pelayo Berazadi, uno de los polistas españoles más destacados del momento, los hermanos Edward y Hector Haynes, Pablo Wansbrough e Innin Buyl, son también ejemplo de cómo el deporte, en este caso el polo, ha sido importante en sus años escolares. La mayoría de ellos dieron sus primeros pasos en el ámbito del polo siendo alumnos de SIS, y con los años fomentaron la práctica de este deporte hasta transformarse en muchos casos, en grandes figuras.

Moulding PEOPLE AND TALENT Sport plays an important role in the lives of the students at the Sotogrande International School, not only as part of their academic curriculum but also during their free time. They receive the necessary amount of motivation, education and support from their teachers to be passionate about every aspect of their lives, including in terms of sports. Even less commonly practiced sports like polo are worked on intensely in order to make them more accessible for girls and boys who show an interest in taking them up. In order to meet the highest of standards, an academy specialising in various sports was set up, working alongside top experts to achieve excellent results. Pelayo Berazadi Conocí el polo en mis años de alumno de Sotogrande International School, donde cursé mis estudios desde los 5 hasta los 15 años, ya que en esa época había mucho polo en Sotogrande y se jugaba durante todo el año. Siempre me gustaron los deportes y los practicaba desde pequeño. Por el polo me empecé a decantar a los 14 años y desde ahí no he parado de jugarlo. Como comentaba anteriormente, mis años como alumno en el colegio fueron mis inicios en el polo. Cuando finalizaban las clases, nos íbamos a taquear a las canchas de San Enrique todas las tardes. Nos comíamos un bocata por el camino y a jugar polo toda la tarde. I learned about polo during my time as a student in the Sotogrande International School, where I studied between the ages of 5 and 15, as there was a lot of polo in Sotogrande during that time and it was played throughout the year. I had always loved sports and I’d played them ever since I was a child. I got started with polo at 14 years of age and I haven’t stopped playing it since then. As I’ve said before, it was during my time at the school when I began to play polo. Once school was out, we would knock the ball around the San Enrique fields every evening. We would eat a sandwich on the way there and then spend the whole evening playing polo.

Rosendo Torreguitar Conozco el polo desde que nací, ya que mis padres (Santiago Torreguitar y Jacqueline Dalgetty) trabajan en el polo desde toda su vida. Empecé a montar a caballo a los cuatro años, justo cuando empezaba a estudiar en SIS. Fue a los 10 años, cursando P6, cuando comencé a taquear, al principio en verano cuando mi padre daba clases. En la época de colegio, salía de clase y me iba a las cuadras a ayudar a mis padres con los caballos y cuando podía taqueaba. Comencé a jugar torneos con adultos y me di cuenta que el polo era y es, mi deporte favorito. Uno de mis primeros torneos oficiales fue la Copa de Jerez, compitiendo con mi padre, Richard Fagan y Lawrence Isola logrando ganar el torneo; por lo cual es uno de los recuerdos más lindos que tengo en mis inicios en el polo competitivo.

I’ve been around polo ever since I was born as my parents (Santiago Torreguitar and Jacqueline Dalgetty) have worked in polo their whole lives. I began riding horses when I was four, just as I was starting out in SIS. It was when I was 10-years-old, while I was still in P6, that I began to knock the ball around. That was at the beginning of the summer when my father gave classes. During my school days, I’d finish class and head to the stables to help my parents with the horses, and when I could I’d knock the ball around with the mallet. I started competing in tournaments with adults and I realised that polo was, and still is, my favourite sport. One of my first competitive tournaments was the Copa de Jerez, where I competed with my father, Richard Fagan and Lawrence Isola, and we managed to win, so that is one of the fondest memories I hold of my first experiences of competitive polo.

Innin Buyl Fue en el verano previo a comenzar mi curso M4 en SIS, disfrutando como espectador un partido de polo, cuando le comenté a mi padre el interés en iniciarme en este deporte. He montado a caballo desde siempre, pero nunca un caballo de polo por lo que fue algo nuevo para mí. Un viernes al salir del colegio mi padre me llevó a un partido de polo y comencé a ayudar a preparar los caballos en los palenques, a montarlos y no pasó mucho tiempo que ya estaba taqueando. Comencé en la escuela de polo con Santiago y Jackie, en las canchas de Río de Santa María Polo Club y jugando prácticas, convirtiéndose en una rutina para mí ir al polo a ayudar a organizar los caballos para los partidos, taquear y jugar cuando podía. Me enamoré de este deporte y ahora que estoy estudiando en la Universidad en Madrid con otros fanáticos del polo, estamos organizando nuestro propio equipo de polo. Queremos darle la oportunidad a otros de conocer el polo y practicarlo, como lo hizo el colegio en mis años de alumna.

It was in the summer going from M3 to M4 when I was watching a match and I told my dad I would love to play polo. I had been riding since forever, but never a polo pony, so it was pretty new to me. One Friday after school my dad took me to a match and I started helping out and now and then I got to ride, until it became a routine and I was riding everyday but not yet stick and balling. Then the school, along with (Jacky – escribelo como lo escribe ella porfa!) and Santi organized lessons twice a week at the Rio fields, which I joined, and I also got the chance to play practices which was an incredible experience. I fell in love with the sport, and this hasn’t changed, as currently I’m attending IE university where other polo fanatics and I are getting together our own Uni team. We want to give others the chance to try the sport, just like SIS did for me years back!

Enorme y rotundo éxito del IV Torneo de Polo Restaurante Parrilla La Quinta en las canchas de Rio de Santa María Polo Club y por supuesto, enorme jornada final con más de medio millar de asistentes en la cita que definió el desenlace del torneo, cuya victoria cayó en manos del conjunto Trocadero Sotogrande, tras vencer en la final por seis goles a cuatro a Silex – Midas – El Octógono. Una gran fiesta del polo y una gran fiesta social. Combinando lo mejor de Sotogrande con su exquisita gastronomía, de la que disfrutaron por parte de Parrilla La Quinta los presentes, así como un gran nivel de polo y el mejor ambiente, en uno de los torneos más esperados del año. Apodado cariñosamente como el ‘Torneo de los Restaurantes’, ya que varios restaurantes de la zona colaboran en la composición de los equipos dando sus nombres.

En el apartado deportivo, tras tres fantásticas jornadas de polo Trocadero – Los Dragones, con: Andrew Nulty, Nano Iturrioz, Diogo Gallego y Kaveh Shakib, se alzaron con esta cuarta edición tras desplegar un fantástico juego. En segunda posición finalizó Silex – Midas – El Octógono, acompañado en el podio con el conjunto de Parrilla La Quinta –Cazenove. En cuarta posición acabó Chambao – Sotorental, seguido de Pura Tapa – Totus; y en sexta posición Cancha II – Dr. A. Un espectáculo por todo lo alto con gran asistencia de público que disfrutaron de una jornada única en Sotogrande, amenizada además, con la presencia del grupo de jazz New Orleans Jump Band, que divirtió con su música y la interpretación del grupo Da Freak, tras la entrega de premios y degustación de un fantástico asado.

IV Parrilla La Quinta Polo Tournament The IV Restaurante Parrilla La Quinta Polo Tournament, held on the fields of the Río de Santa María Polo Club, has been a huge and resounding success, with a massive final day, when over 500 people came to the match that sealed the outcome of the tournament. The final victory went to the Trocadero Sotogrande team after they won the final against Silex – Midas – El Octógono by six goals to four. This great festival of polo was matched by a great social event, which combined the best of Sotogrande’s exquisite cuisine, laid on by Parrilla La Quinta for all those present to enjoy, with top quality polo and a wonderful atmosphere, in one of the most eagerly-awaited tournaments of the year. It derives its affectionate nickname of ‘The Restaurant Tournament’, from the participation of several local restaurants, who put together and give their names to some of the teams. After three splendid days, sporting honours go to Trocadero - Los Dragones, with Andrew Nulty, Nano Iturrioz, Diogo Gallego, and Kaveh Shahib, who lifted the prize for this fourth edition after a tremendous display. In second place came Silex – Midas – El Octógono, who were joined on the podium by the Parrilla La Quinta – Cazenove team. Fourth place went to Chambao – Sotorental, followed by Pura Tapa – Totus, with Cancha II – Dr. A in sixth spot. This has been a top-quality spectacle, drawing a large crowd, who enjoyed a unique day in Sotogrande made all the more pleasant by the presence of jazz group, the New Orleans Jump Band, who provided musical entertainment, and by the performance of Da Freak after the prize-giving and a fantastic roast.

El cuarteto de Sotomaki-Los Dragones se proclamó campeón de la XI Copa de Jerez de Polo, torneo que forma parte de la Temporada de Primavera y que se disputó en las canchas de Río de Santa María Polo Club. Sotomaki-Los Dragones venció a Sotovila en la gran fnal por 6 a 5 en un partido muy disputado y emotivo.El equipo, fomado por: Felipe Leal, Andrew Nulty, Diogo Gallego y Mariano

Iturrioz; cerró un torneo perfecto y se llevó merecidamente el título. Sotovila comenzó mejor el partido y estuvo por delante del marcador hasta el tercer chukker. Fue en ese período donde apareció el profesional Diogo Gallego para liderar la remontada y llevar a su equipo al título. El tercer puesto correspondió a Mahra-Blueye que venció a Sapphire por 10 a 5.

The Sotomaki-Los Dragones team were crowned champions of the XI Copa de Jerez de Polo, a tournament that is part of the Spring Season, it took place at the pitches of the RĂo de Santa MarĂa Polo Club. Sotomaki-Los Dragones beat Sotovila in the final by 6 goals to 5 in what was a closely fought and exciting game. The team formed by: Felipe Leal, Andrew Nulty, Diogo Gallego and Mariano Iturrioz, ended what was a

perfect tournament for them and were deserving winners of the title. Sotovila were the stronger side at the beginning of the game and were in front until the third chukka. Then, the professional Diogo Gallego made his appearance in order to lead the comeback and take his side to the title. Third place went to Mahra-Blueye who beat Sapphire by 10 goals to 5.

Gran éxito en la celebración del primer Abierto Fundación Santa María Polo Club, el primero de los tres fines de semana que componen este evento (los siguientes serán 21 y 28 de junio), con mucha actividades y diferentes acontecimientos. Un fin de semana cargado de acción deportiva que tuvo su cumbre en la jornada dominical con las actividades del ‘Family Day’. En el apartado deportivo, el cuarteto Equus (P. Silling, Rosendo Torreguitar, J. Britos y Martín Iturraspe) se alzaron con el I Abierto Fundación Santa María, tras derrotar en una reñida final al cuarteto de Dr. A por un ajustado 10 a 9. Destacar que la competición ligó

su inicio y final en la zona de Los Pinos, con la jornada intermedia celebrada en Puente de Hierro. En cuanto al Memorial Andrés Parladé, que se celebró simultáneamente, también intercalando sus encuentros en las canchas de Rio con la gran final en Los Pinos, cayó en manos de Los Dragones. El cuarteto formado por Piñal/Nulty, Mariano Iturrioz, Diogo Gallego y Carla Álvarez se impuso en la final al equipo de Polo Valley por un marcador de 9 a 5. Además, la jornada dominical, con la disputa de las finales, estuvo protagonizada por un

gran ambiente en la denominada Zona A (la entrecancha en la que habitualmente se encuentra el After Polo). Con puestos comerciales (moda, joyería, bisutería…), una zona de restauración y diferentes espacios habilitados para los más pequeños. Que además disfrutaron de un Torneo Infantil de Polo y de varias actividades, de la mano del Colegio Internacional de Sotogrande. Todos los beneficios están destinados al Centro de Hipoterapia Fundación Santa María Polo Club. Audi Center Campo de Gibraltar también estuvo presente como colaborador del evento.

Equus wins the Santa María Polo Club Foundation Open The first of the three weekends of the I Santa María Polo Club Foundation Open was a great success (the next weekends will be on 21 and 28 of June) with lots of activities and different events. It was a weekend packed with sporting action that culminated on Sunday with the “Family Day” activities. As for the sport, the Equus team (P. Silling, Rosendo Torreguitar, J. Visitors also enjoyed an Under-14 Polo Tournament and various activities courtesy of Sotogrande International School. All profits will go towards the Santa María Polo Club Riding Therapy Centre. Audi Center Campo de Gibraltar was also present as a partner of the event.

Sam Katiela, fundador y organizador de la BPCD, y su fantástico equipo han vuelto a lograrlo y han hecho posible lo imposible: una combinación perfecta de polo de alto nivel, entretenimiento, espectáculo, servicios y organización perfecta. La Beach Polo Cup Dubai ha ofrecido este año una edición fabulosa y además contaba con el patronazgo oficial de Su Majestad el Jeque Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, príncipe heredero de Dubái y presidente

Cadillac, compuesto por Tariq Albwardy, Sam Instone y Matías Machado, jugó una final fantástica contra un equipo verdaderamente duro como es VistaJet and Bombardier (Rashid Albwardy, Jan Bladen y Martín Valent) que luchó hasta el final en un partido realmente emocionante. Cadillac tuvo un comienzo excepcional poniéndose rápidamente por delante 4-0 en el primer chukker, gracias a que Matías Macha-

En el herraje del siglo XXI no existe nada nuevo en relación a la época en la que el caballo era uno de los elementos más importantes de la economía mundial, excepto en dos aspectos: Nuevos materiales aplicados al herraje, que permiten mejorar las prestaciones y la vida útil del caballo en determinadas disciplinas. Nuevas tecnologías de investigación que permiten comprobar de una forma científica teorías que hasta ahora eran meras hipótesis, esto es especialmente importante a la hora de analizar los efectos provocados por la modificación del casco y de la propia herradura en el caso de caballos de deporte. Pero lo cierto es que cualquiera que sea la actividad a la que se destina el caballo, un buen herraje tiene que cumplir con una serie de principios básicos, que lo distinguen de un herraje perjudicial. En el polo el herraje está reglamentado, no pudiéndose utilizar cualquier tipo de herradura y clavo. Las herraduras suelen ser totalmente ranuradas para aumentar el agarre y la tracción, con justura francesa inversa, así

se disminuye el peso de la herradura y aumentamos la superficie de la tabla. El herraje será muy justo, sin nada de guarnición, por lo deberá renovarse frecuentemente. En todas las disciplinas en las que el herraje es bastante justo, para evitar una arrancamiento de la herradura debido a la violencia del ejercicio (polo, rejoneo, carreras, etc) el mismo deberá renovarse con una mayor frecuencia (20 a 30 días), ya que la herradura se introduce dentro del casco con el paso del tiempo, pudiendo producir lesiones a nivel de la suela y dificultando el correcto funcionamiento del casco. Pero para conocer más y mejor acerca de la técnica del herraje en los caballos de polo, La Bocha Polo Magazine conversó con Guri Sosa, especialista en herrajes de caballos deportivos que hace más de 9 años que trabaja en Sotogrande. “El herrador de caballos de polo, un oficio que combina en dosis iguales la capacidad de observación, el arte manual y el amor por los caballos”, dice Guri mientras con una mano observa detenidamente una herradura y sostiene con la otra la mano de un caballo. “La clave pasa por saber cómo le llega el

caballo al herrero y para eso hay que tener una comunicación fluida con el petisero, el veterinario y el dueño del caballo. Hay muchos factores e información que hay que tener en cuenta a la hora de herrar y lógicamente ver la conformación del caballo”, agrega. Una vez “familiarizado” con el caballo, el Herrador procede a realizar su trabajo. “Lo primero que se hace es tomarle la medida, se le levanta la mano para ver el aplomo y el nivel de corte para dejarlo equilibrado. Acto seguido se despalma para ver exactamente el nivel o crecimiento que tuvo. El herraje se hace promedio cada 30 días porque el casco le crece entre 8 y 12 mm. Ese crecimiento hace que el aplomo y la posición de apoyo del caballo le de diferente angulación y ya le empiezan a trabajar mal los flexores y extensores y por consiguiente todas las articulaciones se exigen más de lo normal. Se recomienda, más en caballos de polo con alta competencia, herrar en un período comprendido entre los 25 y 35 días,

Sosa también explica que en el caso de los caballos de polo, “además de hacerlo por las razones mencionadas anteriormente, se herran también para mejorar su tracción o adherencia en la cancha, brindándole no solo protección al jinete sino que también optimizando el rendimiento del caballo durante el juego”. A la hora de especificar el material que se utiliza para herrar a los caballos de polo, Sosa explica que “en polo se utiliza comunmente la de hierro y a veces la de aluminio, por la absorción a los golpes y también porque es un poquito más liviana. Se respetan muy poco los plazos de recuperación y uno tiene que buscar alternativas y en el herraje ortopédico a veces está la solución. Los materiales como toda herramienta de artesanos son caras, pero para hacer un buen trabajo hay que tener buenas herramientas. Las herraduras con las que trabajo las fabrican en Estados Unidos, es un modelo muy bueno, con buena forma, concavidad y viselado óptimo. Además es muy liviana pese a ser de hierro. Tengo también las mismas en aluminio. Por sus manos han pasado los caballos de Gonzalito, Facundo y Nicolás Pieres, entre otros cracks que vienen a jugar la temporada de polo en Sotogrande. “Es un privilegio y un gusto trabajar para ellos. Todo lo que me he capacitado durante toda mi vida (cursos en Alemania y Suecia, etc) tiene sus frutos y recompensa al trabajar para los mejores jugadores del mundo”.

FOR IRON Horseshoe making in the twenty-first century has not changed much compared with the age in which the horse was one of the world’s main economic driving forces, aside from two aspects: New methods applied to horseshoe making, which allow for an improvement in appearance and a longer life span for horses in different events. The advent of new research and development technologies that allow for a deeper exploration of scientific theories that had merely been considered hypothesis previously. This is especially important when it comes to analysing the effects of modifying hooves as well as the horseshoes themselves in the case of horses used for sports. But what is certain is that no matter what activity the horse is involved in, a good horseshoe needs to meet some basic criteria to set it apart from a harmful one. Horseshoes are regulated in polo, not just any old thing with a nail will do. The shoes usually have a completely slotted design in order to improve grip and traction, with onion-esque heels, which decrease the weight of the shoe and increase its surface area. The shoe should be very tight, without any kind of decoration, and must there-

fore be replaced frequently. The shoe needs to be quite tight for every discipline, and in order to avoid being pulled out during a forceful manoeuvre (polo, lancing, racing, etc.) the shoe should be replaced frequently (20 to 30 days), as it can merge with the hoof over time and cause injuries to the sole of the foot and complicate the functionality of the hoof. But to learn more about the technique of horseshoe making for polo horses, La Bocha Polo Magazine spoke with Guri Sosa, a specialist shoemaker for sport horses who has spent over 9 years working in Sotogrande.

On the topic of shoeing a regular horse and a polo horse, Sosa says that “the protocol is the same, however, the polo horse needs a comfortable shoe that is also guaranteed not to act as a hindrance during play, which would thereby affect the horse’s performance. In any case, what matters most to the owners of polo horses is that the shoes work, that’s it! They have very little regard for recovery times so you have to look for alternatives and some times orthopaedic shoes are the answer. Another solution for horses with sensitive soles is using polyurethane horseshoes. This process is carried out by making silicone supports for the insole and the upper part

of the shoe so as to protect the horse’s sensitive sole. When the horse walks its hooves sink between 2 and 3 mm below the surface and by using this support we can ensure that the weight is evenly distributed. Horse hooves can also be reconstructed with special acrylics. The materials, like any artisanal work tool, are expensive, however, in order to carry out a good job, good tools are required. The horseshoe I work with is made in the USA. It’s a very good model, has a nice shape, and has an optimum concavity and slope. On top of that it’s very light despite being made of iron. I also have the same model in aluminium. Among other top polo ponies that have come to play in Sotogrande, he has looked after those belonging to Gonzalito, Facundo and Nicolás Pieres. “It’s an honour and great source of satisfaction to work with them. All the training I’ve done throughout my life (courses in Germany and Sweden, etc.) has been rewarded by being able to work with the best players in the world”.
