El polo, asignatura recomendada en los colegios Si ya existen universidades en Londres donde incluyen el polo como una asignatura recomendada, ¿que hacemos en otras latitudes donde realmente se vive, se palpa y se siente el polo como parte de su sociedad?. Es hora de despertar, es hora de subirse al tren de los éxitos, el polo proyecta y enriquece a las zonas que lo acogen. Este es el caso de Sotogrande y su arco de influencia, aquí se huele a ambiente de polo, aquí se puede decir que Buenos Aires reside en el Valle del Guadiaro durante la temporada de verano, donde el mate esta presente. Confiamos que este conocimiento y esta experiencia se alargue toda la temporada, tanto en verano como el invierno, las cálidas temperaturas nos proporcionan una gran ventaja con otros lugares del resto de Europa y nos equiparan con la otra parte del mundo. Solo falta que esta capacidad e ilusión de los principales promotores, las familias Mora Figueroa, Sáenz de Vicuña y Zóbel se vean apoyadas a través de sus proyectos por las autoridades competentes. No solo basta con venir a hacerse las fotos en los palcos, se necesitan compromisos serios y que de una vez por todas se tomen en serio el polo. Este deporte se debe ver como un verdadero motor económico y que permite atraer riqueza para la zona por encima de lo elitista que algunos piensan de él. Es hora de remar en conjunto y plantear un nuevo concepto de turismo de calidad a través de esta dinámica deportiva, extendiéndola a otros sectores del caballo como pueda ser la hípica y doma, que también gozan de gran reputación en este enclave privilegiado.

Por otra parte, no hay que olvidarse de la gran temporada que vivimos cada año, y si esta temporada tenemos menos equipos no empaña en absoluto la brillantez del Torneo Internacional que organiza el Santa María Polo Club, donde la antesala fue un brillante Campeonato de España Femenino que resulto mas potente de lo previsto.

Las chicas hicieron las delicias de aficionados y lo pasaron muy lindo, todas coincidían en repetir. La Bocha Polo Magazine lo refleja con una nota a pie de playa (el lugar lo merece) y recibió muchos ánimos por parte de las mejores jugadoras del planeta. Entre ellas, Lía Salvo, impecable como jugadora y mas como persona, un 10+10. Además de las hijas de Milo Fernández Araujo, Mía Cambiaso, y especialmente Joanna Mobley, una entregada anfitriona.

Excelente evento digno de una segunda y más ediciones.

Sabemos que la entrega de esta edición es unos días antes de la primera gran final, la de plata, lo que nos impide mostrar el podio de los primeros ganadores, pero en cambio nos brinda una oportunidad única de estar en vuestras manos ese mismo día, con toda la frescura de un gran evento. Donde el polo en familia es uno de los grandes valores que se promulgan y resulta el éxito de esta temporada y Sotogrande lo sabe, por ello la nueva propiedad esta realizando un despliegue espectacular y potenciará, si cabe, todo lo que rodea el polo.

Polo, recommended subject in schools If there are already universities in London where polo is included as an recommended subject, what are we doing in other parts of the world where the society lives, eats and breathes polo? It’s time to wake up; it’s time to get on board, polo enriches the areas where it is held.

That is certainly the case in Sotogrande and its sphere of influence. The atmosphere surrounding polo is palpable here. One could say that Buenos Aires takes up residence here in the Valle del Guadiaro, where the sight of mate becomes unavoidable. We have faith that this knowledge and experience will extend across the whole season, in the summer as well as the winter. The warm climate gives us a great advantage over other places in the rest of Europe and puts us on the same level as other parts of the world. All that is lacking is for the abilities and eagerness shown by the main sponsors, as well as the Mora Figueroa, Sáenz de Vicuña and Zóbel families to be given support through programmes by the relevant authorities.

It is not enough to merely pose for photos in the corporate boxes, serious commitment is needed and everyone needs to start taking polo seriously once and for all. This sport should to be viewed as a real economic driving force that attracts wealth to the area instead of, as some people see it, an elitist activity. The time has come to pull together and consider a new concept in quality tourism centred around this dynamic sport, and extending out to other equestrian-related sectors such as show-jumping and dressage, which also enjoy a great reputation in this privileged enclave.

Moreover, one should not forget the fantastic season we

have each year, and if there are fewer teams this season that will in no way tarnish the brilliance of the International Tournament organised by the Santa María Polo Club, where the wonderful warm-up act that was the Spanish Women’s Championship more than lived up to the expectations. The female players kept the fans entertained and the tournament was fantastic, with all the participants agreeing to come back again. La Bocha Polo Magazine, reflected this in a report on the beach, (the place is deserving of it), and received encouragement from the world’s best female players, among them, Lía Salvo, a flawless athlete and person, an A+ performance.

In addition to her were Milo Fernández Araujo’s daughters, Mía Cambiaso and in particular Joanna Mobley, who was an extremely devoted hostess. This excellent event is worthy of more editions.

We are aware that this edition is being printed days before the first grand final – the Silver Cup – which means we will be unable to show you the first winners circle, however, on the other hand it gives us the unique opportunity to be in your hands on the day itself, as up-to-date as possible for the fantastic event. It is a place where polo with the family is one of the great values that is adhered to and which is to thank for this season’s success, of which Sotogrande is well aware. As such, this new look tournament is putting on a spectacular show and will further strengthen all that surrounds polo.

El Torneo Internacional que organiza Santa María Polo Club está en plena disputa y la emoción del mejor polo del mundo se centra en Sotogrande durante todo el mes de agosto.

Con el trío de ases conformado por los 10 goles de handicap, Adolfo Cambiaso con la organización Dubai, David “Pelón” Stirling defendiendo los colores de Ayala Polo y Juan Martín Nero con Lechuza Caracas, acompañados por figuras como Nico Pieres en RH Polo, Facundo Sola con Murus Sanctus, Agustín García Grossi con Dos Lunas A&G Banca Privada, y “Cubi” Toccalino con HB Polo y John Paul Clarkin en La Indiana, entre otros, la bocha no se detiene y los trofeos de la temporada ya van encontrando a sus dueños.

Ocho equipos en el alto handicap, siete en el mediano y seis en el bajo conforman la lista de participantes en el Santa María Polo Club durante esta temporada que tiene a Los Pinos como sede principal de torneo con una variada oferta gastronómica y de ocio además del gran nivel de juego que se disfruta durante las tardes.

Un año más Sotogrande es el foco de atención del polo mundial y las estrellas del deporte vuelven a animar una temporada 10 goles.

The International Tournament organized by Santa Maria Polo Club is in full battle and the excitement of the best polo in the world is centred in Sotogrande throughout the whole month of August.

With the aced trio made up of ten goals each, Adolfo Cambiaso with the Dubai team, David “Pelon” Stirling defending the colours of Ayala Polo and Juan Martin Nero with Lechuza Caracas, accompanied by figures such as Nico Pieres in RH Polo, Facundo Sola with Murus Sanctus, Agustin García Grossi with Dos Lunas A&G Banca Privada, “Cubi” Toccalino with HB POLO and John Paul Clarkin for La Indiana, amongst others, the polo ball doesn’t stop and the trophies of this season are already encountering their owners.

Eight teams in high goal, seven in medium goal and six in low goal all form part of the list of participants in Santa Maria Polo Club primarily based at Los Pinos fields which offers a large variety of gastronomic and leisure experiences on top an extremely high level of polo which can be enjoyed in the afternoons.

Once again another year passes that Sotogrande is the centre of attention in the world of polo and the stars of this sport come back to encourage a ‘10 goaler’ season.

King Power Foxes venció a UAE Polo para adjudicarse la 60º edición del Abierto Británico, Gold Cup. En una tarde muy soleada en el Cowdray Park Polo Club, se definió el domingo 19/7 el Campeonato Abierto de Inglaterra por la Copa de Oro, el certamen más importante del Circuito Británico y de Europa, en el cual participaron catorce equipos de entre 20 y 22 goles de valorización.

El torneo quedó en manos del invicto en toda la temporada inglesa 2015 (13 encuentros), King Power Foxes, con los hermanos Gonzalo (h) y Facundo Pieres, tras superar con autoridad a UAE Polo, con Pablo Mac Donough, Lucas Monteverde, Santiago Stirling y José R. Araya, por 14 a 8.

De esta manera, el equipo del patrón tailandés Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha se adjudicó los dos trofeos más importantes de Inglaterra en 2015, tras haber conseguido la Copa de la Reina.

El partido, bien jugado, empezó de forma

muy pareja, pero ya en el segundo parcial se vislumbró el gran juego de los hermanos Pieres, imparables durante todo el encuentro para el equipo de UAE. Así las cosas, King Power Foxes sacó paulatinas ventajas hasta el cuarto chukker, que finalizó de forma accidentada ya que “Top” Srivaddhanaprabha sufrió una dura caída y tras un tiempo en el que fue atendido por los médicos, debió dejar la cancha reemplazado por el joven valor local Kian Hall. En ese período, UAE logró su primer gol de campo, ya que sólo había podido anotar de penal hasta ese momento (de 8 goles convertidos en la final, sólo dos de ellos no fueron por ejecución de faltas).

En el quinto chukker, tres goles de Pablo Mac Donough, el mejor jugador del finalista, acercaba a UAE a sólo dos de diferencia con un parcial por jugar, pero en el último y tras una gran corrida de José R. Araya que no terminó en gol (la bocha dio en uno de los mimbres), King Power definió el pleito con cuatro goles consecutivos (2 de Gonzalo, la gran figura del partido, y dos de Facundo).

De esta manera, King Power Foxes, gran organización tailandesa, logró con justicia ser el 11° equipo en ganar el doblete de títulos en Inglaterra en la temporada, mientras que UAE continúa sin levantar trofeos.

Facundo Pieres logró su tercer título en la Copa de Oro (La Bamba de Areco 2009 junto a su hermano Gonzalo, y Zacara 2013); mientras que para “Gonzalito” fue su segundo galardón en el máximo certamen británico.

En la ceremonia de premios, Facundo Pieres fue elegido el mejor jugador del partido decisivo (al igual que en la Copa de la Reina), mientras que hubo tres premios para los montados. Open Nueva Jersey (Gonzalo Pieres –h–) fue el Mejor Producto Polo Argentino de la Final; Dolfina Divina (Pablo Mac Donough) fue distinguida por el Cowdray Park Polo Club; mientras que Open Katrina (Gonzalo Pieres –h–) recibió el galardón a la mejor yegua de la temporada británica 2015.

King Power Foxes recently defeated UAE Polo to win the 60th British Open and the Gold Cup On Sunday 19 July, under the blazing sun at Cowdray Park Polo Club, two teams fought to win the 60th British Open title and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup, the top prize in the British Circuit and in the whole of Europe. Fourteen teams at between 20 and 22 goal level took part in the championship, with 28 Argentine players spread over twelve of those.

Victory ultimately went to King Power Foxes (including brothers Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres), the undefeated champions of the

2015 British season (after 13 matches), after they comfortably beat UAE Polo (including Pablo MacDonough, Lucas Monteverde (jr) and Jose R. Araya) by 14 goals to 8.

Thai patron Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha’s team thus succeeded in securing the British double for 2015, after also having won the Queen’s Cup. The game began quite evenly, but by the second half, the genius of the unstoppable Pieres brothers was beginning to show.

King Power Foxes then slowly began pulling ahead until the fourth chukka, which ended with ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha suffering a serious fall. After being attended by the

Una de las mejores polistas del mundo disputó el Campeonato Femenino de España en las canchas de Santa María Polo Club, Sotogrande. La Bocha Polo Magazine aprovechó su estancia para conversar con ella y para agasajarla como se lo merece una Nº1, dentro y fuera de la cancha.

Lía tiene un encanto especial, lo demuestra en su juego pero también en su don de gente, condición que le ha permitido abrirse camino en un mundo donde los hombres son amos y señores del polo.

Ella, junto a Sunny Hale y Nina Vestey, entre otras destacadas polistas, le dieron un gran impulso al polo femenino que hoy ya no sólo camina a paso firme sino que tiene un futuro muy auspicioso.

“Siento que varias chicas me abrieron el camino hace años, en una época donde el polo femenino no era tan popular ni aceptado. Hoy, es

aceptado, ha crecido mucho y muchas hijas de grandes jugadores lo práctican, algo que ellos ni imaginaban podría pasar.

(NdeR. El Campeonato Femenino de España contó con la participación de Mía Cambiaso, hija de Adolfo, y Candelaria y Milagros Fernández Araújo, hijas de Milo)”, explica Lía.

“Es muy lindo ver a los padres apoyándolas, y más allá de que jueguen bien o se dediquen en un futuro al polo, quieren que se diviertan, que tengan buena técnica, estén bien montadas.

Eso, sumado a todas las chicas que hay jugando por todo el mundo, como se vió en el Campeonato Femenino de España, uno de los más internacionales que he jugado en los últimos años, hace que el polo femenino siga creciendo”, agrega.

Lía es una de las embajadoras más importantes que tiene el polo femenino en la actualidad. Es consciente de ello y trabaja para que el deporte siga creciendo y mejorando. “Yo asumo la parte que me toca, me gusta la responsabilidad que tengo y siento un deber personal de seguir impulsando el polo femenino y de mantener la imagen femenina, incluso jugando con hombres y en un deporte que es de mucha fricción, intenso. Es importante no perder nunca nuestra condición femenina, tanto arriba como abajo del caballo”.

Imagen de varias marcas importantes, Salvo sabe que el polo femenino tiene un tirón muy grande con los sponsors.

“Hay un mercado muy grande y hay que aprovecharlo para seguir creciendo como disciplina”.

La gran cantidad de mujeres que han comenzado a practicar el polo, la inumerable cantidad de torneos que se juegan en todas partes del mundo, ha signficado un gran impulso para el polo femenino en los últimos años.

“El polo femenino no tiene techo. Hace dos años pensé que el techo estaba cerca pero ahora te digo que no. Otra vez me ha sorprendido, todo va camino a un circuito internacional en los mejores clubes del mundo.

En este momento estamos en la etapa de unificar los handicaps a nivel mundial.

Inglaterra lo acaba de imponer, en Estados Unidos lo comenzó Sunny Hale, nosotros en Argentina lo iniciamos hace ya 5 años con el apoyo total de la Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP), Francia también lo tiene y fue de los primeros, en Asia también se está llevando a cabo. Esto es empezar a hablar todos en un mismo idioma y a partir de ahí, armar un calendario internacional, es el próximo paso. Es viable y estamos cerca de lograrlo”, lo dice convencida.

“Tal vez no sean temporadas tan largas como en el polo masculino pero dos o tres torneos en un lugar, ejemplo Inglaterra, luego Sotogrande en Julio, como este año, en Septiembre irse a Francia, luego Argentina, Palm Beach, EEUU y volver a empezar”, agrega.

Sus inicios “Mi papá se dedicó al polo, llegó a tener seis goles y mi vinculación al polo llega por él.

Fanático de los caballos, un talentoso en el manejo de los mismos, fue por él que empecé a jugar.

Somos tres hijas mujeres, yo soy la más chica y la única que juega. Fue tanto lo que le insistí con jugar al polo que lo cansé, porque él era de los que decía “no” a las mujeres en el polo. Pero cuando decidió darme una mano fue un gran a p oyo , sobre

todo en la técnica, montar bien, subirme a todos los caballos, no siempre jugar los míos.

Los comienzos fueron duros, fue, y es, un profesor muy estricto, seguidor, muy difícil dejarlo contento”.

Tampoco fueron fáciles los inicios “fuera de casa” para Lía, ya que comenzó jugando con los hombres y hacerse un espacio en “su” mundo significó mucho esfuerzo y dedicación.

“Al principio mucha gente debe haber dicho “donde se está metiendo”, porque además yo jugaba con los hombres, que fue muy positivo, y trato de mantenerlo. Ahora juego con los dos, mujeres y hombres.

En Argentina estamos con El Paso Polo Ranch, un proyecto muy grande, para jugar varias copas masculinas de 12 a 18 goles de handicap, pero nunca dejo de jugar torneos femeninos y mixtos.

Jugar con al polo con los hombres también le dio la posibilidad de conocer a los mejores polistas del mundo y jugar con ellos exhibiciones y torneos. “Es una suerte, una oportunidad espectacular. Recuerdo la primera vez que vine a Sotogrande jugué una exhibición junto a Adolfito (Cambiaso), Pelón (Stirling), Juanma (Nero), entre otros.

Ellos me han aceptado y me han dejado participar siempre de la “movida” del polo.

En gran parte sé que es por papá, que me abrió las puertas y me hizo entrar de buena forma al mundo del polo y eso facilitó much.

Pero también algo habré hecho bien ya que me respetan y me consideran de buena forma en el ambiente”.

Pasaporte al mundo “Argentina, España, Francia, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Tailandia, Singapur, el polo es un pasaporte para conocer el mundo y la oportunidad también para darse cuenta que el polo femenino se juega en muchas partes”, afirma Lía.

“Me falta por conocer Dubai y me encantaría poder jugar ahí a corto plazo.

Vengo de jugar en Inglaterra y el nivel es altísimo, los caballos son muy buenos, se ha profesionalizado mucho el polo femenino.

De todas formas me gustaría, a pesar d e que el profesionalismo ya está establecido, que no se pierda la

escencia que tiene el circuito femenino, como por ejemplo el ambiente que se vivió en el Campeonato en Sotogrande. En los hombres se ha perdido y se ha vuelto un tanto frío el ambiente”.

Objetivos “Me gustaría llegar a los 10 goles de handicap de mujeres”, afirma.

“Es el sueño de cada mujer con el handicap nuevo y también mejorar mi handicap con los hombres.

En cuanto a caballos, en Argentina estoy bien organizada, en el exterior no tanto porque es más difícil ya que voy de un lado al otro, estoy 10 días en un lugar jugando un torneo, luego me voy a otro, entonces al no tener una base es más complicado armarse afuera. En Inglaterra y Francia sí estoy organizada pero me gustaría jugar siempre los mismos caballos en todos lados”.

Lía ya sabe lo que es jugar en el Campo Argentino de Polo, Palermo, pero confiesa que le gustaría armar un Abierto Femenino con sede en “La Catedral del Polo” “Jugué en marzo en la cancha 1 de Palermo, con lo cual pude cumplir el típico sueño del polista de jugar en la Catedral del Polo.

P e r o lo que sí sueño, y me gustaría se cumpla, es un Abierto Fe m e n i n o en otoño con sede en Palermo”.

LÍA SALVO Lía Salvo, one of the world’s greatest female polo players, took part in the Spanish Women’s Championship on the Santa María Polo Club pitches, Sotogrande.

La Bocha Polo Magazine made the most of her stay to speak with her and also tell her that she deserves to be number 1, both on and off the pitch.

Lía has a special charm; this is proven in her game and her people skills, something that has allowed her to open up chances in the polo world, a world ruled and driven by men.

Lía, along with Sunny Hale, and Nina Vestey, amongst other prominent polo players, gave a boost to female polo, one that today is not just going steady, but has an incredibly bright future.

“I feel like there have been various girls that opened up the way for me years ago, in a time where female polo wasn’t that popular nor accepted. Today it is, it’s accepted, it has grown and many daughters of great players play, something even they didn’t imagine happening” explains Lía (Ed. Mia Cambiaso, daughter of Adolfo, and Candelaria and Milagros Fernández Araújo, daughters of Milo participated in the Spanish Female Championship).

“Its great to see the parents supporting them, and more than wanting them to play well or dedicate their life to polo, they want them to have fun, a good technique, and have good ponies to ride.

That, along with all the girls around the world that are playing, which was seen in the Spanish female Championship, one of the most international tournaments I have played in the past years, allows polo to keep growing”, she adds.

Lía is one of the most important ambassadors of female polo in actuality.

She is conscious of this and works towards making the sport grow and improve. “I accept the role given to me, I like the responsibility I have and feel a personal need to keep pushing female polo and maintain a feminine image, even when playing with men and in a sport that consists of lots of contact, intense.

Its very important to never loose our womanhood, both on and off the horse.”

Image of various important brands, Salvo knows that female polo is in high demand with sponsors. “There is a large market and it has to be taken advantage of for polo to keep growing as a discipline”.

The great amount of women who have started to play polo, the countless amount of tournaments that are played all around the world, has meant a great

push for female polo in the last few years.

“Female polo doesn’t have a glass ceiling.

Twelve years ago I thought the glass ceiling was close but now I’m telling you “no”. Once again it has surprised me, everything points towards an international tour around all the best clubs in the world. At this moment we are at the stage of uniting the female handicaps on a worldwide level. England just imposed it, in the USA Sunny Hale started, we in Argentina initiated it 5 years ago with the complete help of the Argentine Polo Association (AAP), France has got it already and was one of the first, in Asia they’re also implementing it. Lía knows what its like to play on the Argentine Polo Field, Palermo, she confesses that she would like to start a Female open based in “the Cathedral of Polo”.

“Last March I played on field 1 of Palermo, whereby I was able to achieve the typical polo players dream of playing in the Cathedral of Polo. But what I do dream, and I would love for it to become reality, is a Female Open in autumn based in Palermo.

El Campeonato Femenino de España que tuvo como sede las canchas de Santa María Polo Club fue todo un éxito.

En una espectacular definición, el equipo de Bayswater formado por Leticia Álvarez (sustituida por Katya Prunkova en el tercer chukker), Raya Sidorenko, Alicia Gariador y Lía Salvo venció a Atlanterra (Clare Mathias, Katie McKinney, Carla Álvarez y Joanna Mobley) por 5 a 4.

Bayswater, con una gran actuación de Lía Salvo, comenzó en gran forma el partido decisivo y logró una ventaja de 4 a 1 en la primera mitad.

Una gran reacción de Atlanterra, con destacadas actuaciones de Joanna Mobley y Katie McKinney, puso el partido igualado en 4 goles con un minuto por jugar.

Fue en los segundos finales, y gracias a un penal convertido por Lía Salvo, que Bayswater logró quedarse con el partido

Fue el mejor cierre para un espectacular torneo que fue acompañado por una gran cantidad de espectadores que asisiteron durante los tres días a las canchas de Río.

La tercera posición correspondió a Club Marítimo Hotel y la cuarta plaza fue para La Bocha. La clasificación general la cerraron La Quinta e Iridike.

Lía Salvo se llevó el premio MVP Serveq y la yegua Petisa, también jugada por Lía, fue el mejor ejemplar de la final.

La edición 2015 del Campeonato Femenino de España también será recordada por la intensa agenda social que tuvo gracias al apoyo de La Bocha Polo Magazine, La Quinta Puerto y Hotel Marítimo.

La presentación del torneo y los equipos se realizó el jueves previo al torneo

en el Hotel Marítimo con la presencia de todas las jugadoras, autoridades y patrocinadores.

El viernes al mediodía La Bocha Polo Magazine invitó a todos los equipos a disfrutar de un almuerzo en el incomparable marco del Chiringuito Il Soño, en la playa Cala Sardina.

Allí las polistas, además de disfrutar de un rico almuerzo, se prestaron para la divertida producción de fotos que les mostramos en éstas páginas y pasaron un momento agradable previo a la competición.

El sábado por la noche La Quinta Puerto también agasajó a los equipos y autoridades y el domingo tras la final se cerró el torneo con un almuerzo típicamente argentino.

The Women’s Championship of Spain held at Santa María Polo Club fields was a great success.

In a spectacular final match, the Bayswater team made up of Leticia Álvarez (replaced by Katya Prunkova in the third chukka), Raya Sidorenko, Alicia Gariador and Lía Salvo defeated Atlanterra (Clare Mathias, Katie McKinney, Carla Álvarez and Joanna Mobley) by 5 goals to 4. Thanks to the outstanding performance of Lía Salvo, Bayswater started the game in great shape and managed a score of 4-1 in the first half.

Strong performances by Joanna Mobley and Katie McKinney for Atlanterra in the second half levelled the score at 4 goals each with one minute left to play.

However, in the final seconds of the game, a penalty converted by Lía Salvo gave Bayswater the edge and thus the trophy.

It was a wonderful end to a spectacular tournament, watched by the large crowd that had followed the three exciting days of polo from the edges of the Río Sotogrande field.

Third place went to Club Marítimo Hotel, fourth place went to La Bocha and La Quinta and Iridike took fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Lía Salvo won the Serveq MVP prize, and the prize for best pony in the final went to the mare Petisa, also ridden by Lía.

The 2015 Women’s Championship of Spain will also be remembered for the busy social calendar that went on around the matches, thanks to the support of La Bocha Polo Magazine, La Quinta

Puerto and Hotel Marítimo. The opening ceremony and presentation of the teams took place on the Thursday before the tournament in the Hotel Marítimo in front of all the players, officials and sponsors.

On Friday, La Bocha Polo Magazine invited all the teams to enjoy lunch in the unparalleled surroundings of Chiringuito Il Soño at Cala Sardina beach. The players had a delicious lunch followed by a photo session (the results of which can be seen here), and they managed to relax a little before the competition started.

On Saturday night, La Quinta Puerto also hosted the teams and officials, and on the Sunday following the final, the tournament was brought to a close with a typical Argentine lunch.

“Es una gran apuesta de Dos Lunas, seguir mejorando, para ofrecer a los equipos un nuevo servicio que incluye una cancha de polo, pista de vareo y su caballeriza todo en un mismo lugar y de uso exclusivo. Excellence knows no bounds In July, Dos Lunas Polo & Dressage Club in Sotogrande opened its third polo field.

The club is committed to providing top-level services across all areas of equestrian sport and is located in a valley with stunning views and in an exclusive equestrian zone. Its recently opened third polo field also has a training area and premier stable facilities all in one place, with all the advantages that that brings with it.

Martín Iturraspe, polo manager at Dos Lunas explains, “it is part of our commitment at Dos Lunas to keep improving, offering teams a new service that includes a polo field, a training area and stables, all at the highest level. The training area is designed by German company Klaus Damann, as are all the others at Dos Lunas Polo & Dressage”.

He adds, “the idea behind Dos Lunas is

Dos Lunas continues to drive polo forward in Sotogrande, and the construction of this new field, with its exclusive services, along with the club’s organisation of tournaments in June and July of this season, are living proof of that fact.

Just as in previous seasons, in preparation for the beginning of the International Polo Tournament in Sotogrande, Dos Lunas will welcome the world’s top polo organisations to its facilities. Su padre jugaba al polo en Las Bétulas, Argentina, pero Gonzalo Quesada eligió de pequeño jugar con el balón ovalado de rugby para transformarse en uno de los jugadores más destacados de Los Pumas, el seleccionado argentino de rugby y de clubes de primer nivel como Stade Français y Racing, ambos de Francia.

El goleador del Mundial de Gales 1999 y actual director deportivo del Stade Français, se tomó unos días de vacaciones en Sotogrande previo al inicio de la exigente Liga Francesa de Rugby, en la cual defiende título, y aprovechó el tiempo libre para practicar un deporte que lo tiene cada vez más “placado”, el polo.

Le confiesa a La Bocha Polo Magazine, luego de taquear junto a Martín Iturraspe en Dos Lunas Polo & Dressage Club, que el polo “lo desenchufa del stress del trabajo. Es un deporte que me relaja mucho.

Mi padre jugaba al polo en Las Bétulas y yo jugaba al rugby y al fútbol, y como mi Viejo había armado una canchita nos poníamos a taquear en las vacaciones. Hacíamos prácticas y jugabamos a un nivel bajo, ´muy bajo´”, afirma entre risas Gonzalo Quesada durante la charla.

“Después de los 17 años que fue cuando empecé a jugar al rugby en Primera División y me hice profesional se me acabó el polo, las vacaciones de invierno, todo”, recuerda.

“Cuando me fui a jugar a Francia en el 2004, al Stade Français, estaban jugando al polo en París, Nito Uranga y Christian Nordheimer y me invitaron a taquear y después de 12 años sin tocar una bocha volví subirme al caballo y la verdad que me divirtió

mucho. Cuando me instalé en Paris en el 2007 volví a taquear y hasta ahora, cada vez que el trabajo me lo permite, voy a taquear con Diego “Topo” Braun y me divierte mucho. Este año por primera vez saqué handicap y jugué un torneo oficial ya que me invitó “Corchito” Zavaleta para jugar el que organizó St. Mesme.

Pero la verdad que el trabajo que tengo, (Director Deportivo del Stade Français), conlleva mucha responsabilidad y la verdad que me queda muy poco tiempo libre.

El año pasado los domingos por la tarde para desenchufar del trabajo me iba con un gran amigo, Mariano López, a taquear.

Ante la pregunta de sí le gustaría dedicarse al polo en un futuro, Quesada confiesa que le gusta mucho y que está tratando de organizarse para jugar más seguido. “Es un deporte caro pero es mucho más barato que un psicólogo (risas). Tengo un trabajo que me ocupa los siete días de la semana durante 11 meses, con mucha presión todos los fines de semana, 18 personas a mi cargo en el staff del equipo, además de los 38 jugadores, preparar partidos, entrenamientos. Es una carga de trabajo muy importante y de mucha presión por eso cuando me puedo escapar un domingo a la tarde a taquear lo hago porque me relaja mucho, evacúo todo el stress y si bien arranco el lunes dolorido de montar (risas) lo hago feliz. Es un deporte que me divierte mucho y me relaja, no se si me dará para ser polista pero seguir montando y taqueando seguro”.

La ventaja de tener muchos amigos que se dedican al polo jugando en París le facilita mucho cumplir su deseo de jugar al polo seguido. Cuando visita Argentina también se hace su tiempo para

jugar alguna práctica y entre sus “compañeros” de equipo han estado Eduardo Novillo y Piki Díaz Alberdi, “todo un lujo”, dice Gonzalo.

Sotogrande Llegó por primera vez de la mano de su amigo y periodista Juan Pablo Alessandrini, invitado para colaborar con un equipo profesional del Campo de Gibraltar que iba a formar parte de una liga profesional de rugby en España.

“Me invitaron a Sotogrande para asesorarlos y estuve unos días. Durante mi estadía me encontré con Santi Torreguitar (Polo Manager de Santa María Polo Club) y me invitó a jugar y pasé unos días espectaculares.

Cada uno o dos años me vengo tres o cuatro días para desenchufar un poco y el año pasado logré organizar una semana de pretemporadacon con mi equipo en Sotogrande. No fue fácil ya que para un equipo super profesional como el Stade Français tenés que organizar hasta el más mínimo detalle.

Nos vinimos con 55 personas a San Roque Suites, la cancha de fútbol la transformamos en una de rugby, convertimos en gimnasio una sala en desuso y así nos armamos un centro de entrenamiento muy bueno y esa temporada terminamos siendo campeones de la Liga Francesa así que espero poder repetir en poco tiempo ya que nos dio suerte”.

Los éxitos como entrenador “Tengo mucha suerte, con apenas 41 años ya tengo ocho años de experiencia como entrenador, no es poca cosa. Primero estuve durante cuatro años en la selección francesa y ahora llevo otros cuatro años en equipos profesionales muy importantes de Francia, como Racing y Stade Français, lo cual es un privilegio.

Trabajamos mucho, con mucha convicción, con una forma de entrenar, de generar una dinámica y espíritu de grupo diferente que por suerte está dando resultados. Tratamos siempre de mirar para adelante ya que los desafíos son muy grandes.

Estoy viviendo mi carrera como entrenador con más intensidad que la de jugador, pero todavía me queda mucho por aprender”.

Los Pumas Un futuro vinculado a Los Pumas, la selección argentina de rugby, como entrenador es algo que suelen preguntarle y mucho. Quesada sabe que todo llega y que en su debido momento le gustaría estar al frente de Los Pumas.

“Me lo han preguntado mucho y sin dudas me gustaría entrenar a Los Pumas en el futuro. Soy argentino, la camiseta de Los Pumas me dio todo y es mi camiseta para toda la vida.

Fui construyendo mi carrera como profesional y entrenador fuera de la Argentina, sin que nadie me regale nada. Fui cumpliendo etapas, las puertas se me fueron abriendo en base a trabajo y resultados y si algún día llega el llamado desde la UAR (Unión Argentina de Rugby) nos sentaremos a hablar.

Estoy instalado en Francia, muy contento, y si se tiene que dar, en algún momento se dará.

Los pasos como entrenador se van dando, primero en un seleccionado como el de Francia trabajando durante 4 años como entrenador adjunto pero luego con cuatro años en dos clubes muy importantes (Stade Français y Racing) con responsabilidad máxima, aprendiendo cada vez más y quizás ello sea lo que me va a permitir llegar con más experiencia y madurez a manejar un seleccionado”.

Argentina y el Mundial 2015 “Han evolucionado mucho en ataque, que era uno de los puntos flojos del equipo y la verdad que los ví muy bien.

Los Pumas como Francia son equipos que aparecen en los Mundiales.

Francia viene de un ciclo muy malo y seguramente va a ser protagonista y Los Pumas vienen de adquirir mucha experiencia desde el 2011 con el Championship”.

Para Quesada los candidatos para ganar el próximo Mundial son “siempre los mismos, aunque le pondría una ficha a Inglaterra y Sudáfrica.

Australia y Nueva Zelanda siempre están, pero vienen de calendarios muy intensos, sin parar, sin hacer el ciclo de reposo y llegarán al Mundial con lo que les queda y por ahí eso les juega en contra”.

From the RUGBY BALL to the MALLET and BOCHA

His father played polo in Las Bétulas, Argentina, but Gonzalo Quesada decided as a young boy to play with the rugby ball becoming one of the most successful players in Los Pumas, the Argentine National Team and first Rank clubs such as Stade Français and Racing, both in France.

The top scorer of the 1999 World Cup and current headcoach at Stade Français, took a few days off before the kick-off of the demanding French Rugby League, in which he defends the title, making use of his free time to engage in a sport that each time he practices more: polo.

He confesses to La Bocha Polo Magazine, post stick and balling with Martín Iturraspe in Dos Lunas Polo & Dressage Club, that polo “puts his mind off the stress from work. It’s a sport that disconnects me and relaxes me a lot. My father played polo in Las Bétulas and I played rugby and football, because my father had made a little field we stick and balled in winter and Easter holidays. We organized practices and played at a very low level, ‘very low’” affirms Gonzalo Quesada between laughs during the interview.

“After I turned 17 years old I started to play in first division Rugby and became professional, that was the end of polo, winter holidays and everything” he remembers.

“When I went to play in France in 2004, for Stade Français, Nito Uranga and Christian Nordheimer were playing polo in Paris, they invited me to come and stick and ball so after 12 years of not touching a polo ball I got back on the horse and I honestly enjoyed it a lot.

When I settled down in Paris in 2007 I started stick and balling until now, every time my work allows it, I go to stick and ball with Diego “Topo” Braun and I have so much fun. This year for the first time I got a handicap and played an official tournament, as “Corchito” Zavaleta invited me to play, for the one that organized St. Mesme. But the

truth is that my current job (Headcoach at Stade Français) comes with lots of responsibility and I honestly don’t have much free time. Last year every Sunday, to disconnect from work, I went to stick and ball with a great friend, Mariano López.”

Regarding the question whether he would like to dedicate himself to polo in the future, Quesada confessed that he likes it a lot and is trying to get organized to play more frequently. “It’s a very expensive sport but it’s a lot less expensive than a psychologist (laughs). My job keeps me occupied seven days a week during 11 months, with lots of pressure every weekend, 18 people reporting to me directly from the team staff, on top of 38 players, match preparation, and training. It’s a very important position with a lot of pressure which is why when I can escape a Sunday morning to go and stick and ball I do, because it relaxes me, I get rid of all the stress and if I do happen to start on Monday in pain from riding (laughs) I do this happily. It’s a sport that I very much enjoy and relaxes me, I don’t know if I have what it takes to be a polo player but I will keep riding and stick and balling for sure.”

The advantage of having many friends who dedicate their life to polo in Paris also helps him complete his wish of playing polo more frequently. When he visits Argentina he makes time to play a practice or two, amongst his past team “mates” have been Eduardo Novillo and Piki Díaz Alberdi, “such a priveledge”, says Gonzalo.

Sotogrande The first time he came was through his friend and reporter Juan Pablo Alessandrini, invited to collaborate with a local professional rugby team that was going to form part of the professional Spanish rugby League.

“They invited me to Sotogrande to advise them and I was here for a few days. During my stay I met Santi Torreguitar (Polo Manager at Santa Maria Polo Club) and he invited me to play and I had a couple of spectacular days.

Every year or two I come here for three or four days to disconnect a little and last year I was able to organize a pre season week with my team in Sotogrande. It wasn’t easy since for a team as professional as Stade Français everything has to be organized to the tiniest detail.

We came here with 55 people to San Roque Suites, we transformed the football field to a rugby one, an obsolete room was transformed into a gym and like that we prepared a great training centre and in that very season we ended up as champions of the French league so I hope to repeat it shortly as it gave us luck.”

Successes as a coach “I’m very lucky, I’m hardly 41 years old and I already have eight years of experience as a trainer, it’s not nothing. My first four years were for the French National Team and now I have been in with important professional teams in France, such as Racing and Stade Français, which is a privilege.

We work a lot, with a lot of dedication, with a way of training, of generating a dynamic and different group spirit, which is luckily generating results. We always try and look forward as the challenges are very big. I’m experiencing my career as a trainer with more intensity than as a player, but I still have a lot to learn”.

Los Pumas A future tied to Los Pumas, the Argentine National Team, as a trainer is something he gets asked about often. Quesada knows that everything comes around and at the right time he would like to be at

Los Pumas’ front.

“They have asked me this often and without doubt I would like to train Los Pumas in the future. I’m Argentine, the Los Pumas t-shirt gave me everything and it is my t-shirt for the rest of my life.

It happened that I started building my professional and trainer career outside Argentina, without anyone handing out anything to me.

I completed stages, doors started opening with regard to work and results and if one day I get a call from UAR (Argentina Rugby Union) we will sit down to talk.

I’m settled in France, happily, and if one day it has to be given up, it will be.

The steps as a trainer are being taken, first in a selection like France where I worked for four years as an assistant coach but later 4 years in two very important clubs (Stade Français and Racing) with full responsibility, learning more each time and maybe that’s what will allow me handle a selection with more experience and maturity” Argentina and the 2015 world cup “They have evolved massively in attack, which was a weak point in the team but now I genuinely see them very well.

Los Pumas like France are teams that appear in world cups. France came out of a very bad cycle and will surely be a key player and Los Pumas just came from gaining a lot of experience since 2011 with the Championship”.

For Quesada the ones who will win the next world cup are “always the same, but I would bet on England and South Africa. Australia and New Zealand are always there, but come from very intense calendars, without having a break so they arrive to the world cup with what they have left and this possibly plays in their disfavour.”

Abrió sus puertas en 2003, y desde entonces cientos de caballos de polo han acudido a sus instalaciones para recibir cuidados clínicos cuando la gravedad de las lesiones lo requiere. Cada verano el grupo de veterinarios tanto españoles como de todo el mundo, que acompaña a los mejores equipos de polo, acuden a La Equina para recibir apoyo tanto en diagnóstico como en tratamientos sofisticados, que solo un hospital de excelencia puede ofrecer.

Que el polo es un deporte exigente para el caballo es sabido, pero también es verdad que gracias a los avances en diagnóstico precoz de lesiones y a la sofisticación en el tratamiento, el caballo de polo tiene hoy una esperanza de vida deportiva más larga. Cada año en La Equina se salvan caballos que hace unos años era imposible recuperar.

Miguel Valdés, el Director del Hospital, nos muestra con orgullo la yegua que está a punto de volver a Argentina para convertirse en una de las donantes de embriones más valiosas del mundo del polo.

A veces, el viaje de varias horas o días del caballo de polo hace que alguno presente fiebre post-transporte y deba ser evaluado por el servicio de medicina interna liderado por la Dra. Maya Caparrós. Lo normal es que con unos tratamientos con suero intravenoso, antiinflamatorios y antibióticos la yegua esté en condiciones de jugar en un par de días, sin embargo, hay que confirmar por radiografías y ecografía pulmonar que no presenta una

pleuroneumonía inducida por el transporte.

Pero no es verdad que solo los casos graves son atendidos en La Equina, también gracias al laboratorio de hematología y bioquímica sanguínea mejor dotado del sur de España los veterinarios de los equipos monitorizan el nivel de entrenamiento y la forma física de los atletas equinos. Cada día llegan al hospital muestras de sangre para ser analizadas y dar los resultados en el momento.

Si el rendimiento deportivo no es el óptimo un chequeo general puede detectar un problema precoz.

La Dra. Maya Caparrós nos recuerda que un caballo de polo necesita su esqueleto, sus músculos, su corazón y sus pulmones al 100% para poder rendir.

Por ello el servicio de cardiología hace cada verano varios electrocardiogramas y ecocardiografías Doppler intentando confirmar que no hay un problema cardiopulmonar en caballos con rendimiento inadecuado.

A veces es una cojera sutil, y para ello en La Equina se cuenta con la única unidad de medicina nuclear (scanner) para detección de cojeras ocultas de Andalucía. Es lo que se denomina Unidad de Gammagrafía. Se inyecta un compuesto radioactivo en la vena del caballo y en una pantalla aparece una imagen con los puntos “calientes” o de alto metabolismo, que normalmente indican zonas de dolor. Gracias a esta técnica se ha disminuido exponencialmente el número de fracturas catastróficas por fisuras en

el húmero y la tibia, al ser detectadas precozmente. ¿Son comunes los cólicos en el caballo de polo?

La Dra. Patricia Becerra, del servicio de cirugía, nos asegura que para que un caballo tenga un cólico lo único que necesita es estar vivo. Sin embargo, lo cierto es que la alimentación tan equilibrada y el ejercicio y entrenamiento del caballo de polo disminuyen la frecuencia de cólico.

Cada verano algún caballo debe ser operado de emergencia, y tres meses después estará jugando de nuevo al polo como si nada hubiera ocurrido. Hoy el 90% de los caballos operados de cólico vuelven a la competición. ¿Cómo se ve el futuro desde el Hospital La Equina?

Hemos visto crecer Sotogrande con el polo en los últimos 12 años, sin embargo lo mejor está por venir. No solo lo

traerá el polo, sino el resto de deportes ecuestres, sobretodo el salto y la doma.

Sotogrande y la Costa del Sol tienen al alcance de la mano convertirse en la zona de invernada del caballo europeo, entre los meses de Octubre y Abril. El Distrito Equino del Valle del Guadiaro va a ser fundamental para que cuaje esta oportunidad, y La Equina tiene la vocación de seguir prestando la atención hospitalaria para toda la zona.

En los próximos meses abriremos la primera resonancia magnética para caballos de Andalucía. Esta modalidad de diagnóstico por la imagen es primordial para diagnosticar problemas de casco y examinar las articulaciones.

Sin duda, es la mejor modalidad para estudiar las lesiones de las articulaciones y ha dejado de lado la radiografía como base del diagnóstico.

LA EQUINA Hospital The support system for polo ponies in Sotogrande This equine hospital opened its doors in 2003 and since then, hundreds of polo ponies have come through its doors to receive veterinary care. Every year, the vets associated with the best polo teams in the world come to La Equina for support in diagnostics and the sophisticated treatments that only a premier veterinary hospital can offer.

It is a well-known fact that polo is a demanding sport for the ponies; however, it is also true that thanks to advances in early diagnosis and treatment, the polo ponies of today can have a far longer sporting career.

Every year at La Equina, ponies are saved that until recently would not have had a chance.

Miguel Valdés, Hospital Director, proudly introduces us to a mare that is about to return to Argentina to become one of the most valuable embryo donors in the polo world. She had fractured her first phalanx into more than ten fragments, but three months later, she has recovered. At the end of August, she is set to return home along with her team mates.

Sometimes, after a journey of hours or even days, a polo pony can present with a fever and must be checked over by the internal medicine team led by Dr. Maya Caparrós. A horse is normally ready to play again after a couple of days’ treatment with an intravenous drip, anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics; however, it is important to confirm through x-rays and a scan of the lungs that the horse is not suffering from pleuropneumonia, brought on by the journey.

Nevertheless, it is not only the serious cases that come to La Equina; thanks to the best equipped haematology and blood chemistry lab in the south of Spain, team vets can monitor the level of physical fitness in their equine athletes. Every day, blood samples arrive at the hospital to be analysed, with the results available immediately.

If a pony’s performance is not its best, a general checkup can quickly detect a problem.

to be working 100% to be able to perform on the field. For this reason, the cardiology team at the hospital undertakes various electrocardiograms and Doppler echocardiograms on underperforming horses each summer in order to confirm they are not suffering from a cardiopulmonary issue.

Sometimes, the problem is a slight lameness, and for this, La Equina is equipped with the only nuclear medicine scanner for the detection of difficult to diagnose lameness in Andalucía. It uses what is called Gamma Scintigraphy.

The horse is injected intravenously with a radioactive compound, and the ‘hot spots’ or high metabolism points, which normally indicate areas of pain, appear on a screen. Thanks to this early detection technique, the number of fatal fractures because of fissures in the humerus or tibia has decreased exponentially.

Is colic common in polo ponies?

Dr. Patricia Becerra, part of the surgery team, reminds us that the only thing that a horse really needs to do to get colic is to be alive. However, it is also true that the balanced diet, exercise and training that are part of a polo pony’s life do decrease the chances that it will suffer from colic. Every summer, a horse will be taken in for an emergency operation and then three months later it will be back on the field as though nothing had happened. Today, 90% of the horses operated on for colic can return to competition.

What does La Equina Hospital predict for the future?

We have seen Sotogrande grow with polo over the last 12 years, but we believe that the best is still to come. It won’t just be polo helping growth but

also many other equestrian sports, such as show jumping and dressage.

Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol are close to becoming the wintering area for European horses between the months of October and April. The Valle de Guadiaro Equine District will be fundamental for the consolidation of this opportunity, and La Equina intends to carry on providing hospital care for the whole area. We intend to work to support those who decide to come and compete here when it is not possible in northern Europe because of the weather.

In the next few months, we will begin to use the first MRI machine for horses in Andalucía. This diagnostic tool is vital to diagnose hoof problems and examine joints. Without doubt, it is the best way to study injured joints and it has left the x-ray far behind as a basis for diagnosis.

Nico Pieres aterrizó por segundo año consecutivo en el Santa María Polo Club para jugar el Torneo Internacional con RH Polo, equipo al cual defendió también en Inglaterra. Durante su estadía en Sotogrande, La Bocha Polo Magazine visitó al menor de los hermanos Pieres en las caballerizas de su equipo, en Dos Lunas Polo Club, para charlar de todo, en especial de una Temporada Argentina para la cual cuenta los días para su inicio.

Sotogrande Es el segundo año que vengo a jugar con RH, también vine dos años seguidos con Ellerston, y la verdad es que está muy bueno. Después de la temporada inglesa llegar a Sotogrande con otro clima y con canchas e instalaciones tan buenas siempre está muy bueno.

Cuando te ponés los pantalones blancos y jugás trofeos de renombre como la Copa de Plata y la Copa de Oro tenés exigencia y querés ganar. Pero es cierto que es un buen torneo para jugar después de una temporada inglesa muy exigente, con un polo muy competitivo.

Sotogrande es competitivo pero el calendario no es tan exigente por lo cual es un poco más relajado y previo a lo que se viene, la temporada argentina, es el combo ideal.

UK Fue la primera temporada de Ben Soleimani (RH Polo Team) en Inglaterra y nos fue bastante bien. Jugamos la temporada con 21 goles, fue muy positiva y alcanzamos los cuartos de final donde perdimos con King Power en un partido muy parejo. Lo bueno que Ben (Soleimani) se pudo dar cuenta de lo competitivo que es el polo y del nivel de organización y de caballos que necesitás para competir a este nivel.

La aparición de patrones nuevos El polo está difícil en todos lados por eso está muy bueno que aparezcan patrones y organizaciones nuevas para que crezca y los de alrededor vayan viendo como hay que organizarse para tener buenos resultados.

Ellerston Espero que sea un hasta luego y vuelva lo antes posible. Fue muy lindo compartir varios años con James (Packer). Jugué con él en Sotogrande y en Argentina, donde tenemos la suerte de tenerlo en Ellerstina, lo cual es un honor. Estaría muy bueno que vuelva lo antes posible. Kerry, su padre, era un apasionado del polo, y ojala que James siga esos pasos y mantenga la organización grande que tiene.

King Power Ya armó mucho ruido en el poco tiempo que lleva en el polo. El primer año que juega en Inglaterra ya ganó la Copa de la Reina y la

Gold Cup. Es uno de los patrones del presente y del futuro y ojalá mucha gente pueda ver las cosas que hacen. Cómo se organizan, la cantidad de gente que tienen trabajando, los caballos que compran, canchas, veterinarios, pilotos, todo lo hacen a la perfección y está a la vista que si vos estás bien organizado y hacés las cosas bien los resultados llegan y podés tener un equipo de punta.

La irrupción de King Power abre un mercado poderoso en el polo como el asiático...

La verdad que es muy bueno y estos mercados nuevos que aparecen con mucha fuerza le hacen muy bien al polo. El ejemplo también está con Dubai, que está haciendo muy bien las cosas, con patrones de los Emiratos Árabes invirtiendo mucho y organizando muy buenas temporadas. Ahora aparecen en Asia, como el caso de King Power, que hacen que el polo crezca mucho más.

Argentina Para nosotros (Ellerstina) esta temporada que se viene es especial.

Estoy contando los días, y ya se perfectamente cuantos quedan para arrancar la temporada argentina (risas).

Este año es un equipo nuevo, con sensaciones nuevas. Tuvimos una muy buena etapa con Mariano (Aguerre) con quien ganamos un Abierto, nos enseñó, nos dio orden, nos dio todo. Se cumplió un ciclo y ahora le toca entrar a Polito (Pieres) que es algo que le apuntamos siempre, desde que arrancamos. Es nuestro primo pero por sobre todo es muy amigo, un jugadorazo, 10 goles y ojalá dure mucho tiempo con nosotros en el equipo. Es lo que queremos, a lo que le apuntamos y esperemos que los resultados se den. Hay que ver si se dan este año o más adelante, sabemos que enfrente tenemos a La Dolfina que es un equipo buenísimo, así que no tenemos que apurarnos.

De todas formas por la onda que tiene el equipo y la organización que nos respalda los resultados van a llegar, espero que más temprano que tarde.

Lo que más nos motiva es que es un proyecto a largo plazo.

El debut con Ellerstina Entrar en la Ellerstina siempre fue un sueño y sabía que en algún momento iba a llegar. Poder jugar con mis hermanos y ahora con mi primo es lo más lindo que hay, no lo cambio por nada.

Tengo dos hermanos 10 goles, mi padre también lo fue y ojalá me lleguen en algún momento a mí también pero no me preocupa la verdad.

Vivo del polo, me encanta y disfruto mucho lo que hago, desde chico que tengo un taco en la mano.

né jugar de back al polo y además ganar un Abierto en esa posición. En el 2014 fue algo nuevo porque con la lesión de Mariano pasé a jugar de tres que es una posición que la jugaba en el exterior pero nunca en Argentina.

Vamos a ver este año que pasa, me encantaría poder jugar de tres o de dos, de dos es la posición que más me gusta.

Jugar con Facu de back nos va a dar mucha potencia y mucho ataque. Vamos a ser un equipo muy ofensivo, después habrá que ver quién defiende (risas).

Polito es un 1 natural y es increíble en esa posición. Siendo tan bueno y tan efectivo en la posición de delantero sabemos que no lo podemos cambiar.

Estamos moviendo a Facu de su puesto original pero él puede jugar de cualquier posición y está muy acostumbrado a jugar de back. Creo que se le va a hacer fácil jugar de 4, más teniendo una delantera como la que vamos a tener este año.

Esta temporada la vamos iniciar jugando el Abierto del Jockey para probar un poco las posiciones y los caballos e iremos viendo con los partidos como se va dando el funcionamiento del equipo.

Es un año de muchos equipos nuevos y por eso también se le apunta a jugar torneos que quizás otros años no se jugaban para probar funcionamiento, caballos nuevos, etc. Jugar un par de partidos en el Jockey es mejor que jugar prácticas, para el jugador y para los caballos.

Abierto Argentino Me lo imagino levantando la copa, al Abierto siempre me lo imagino ganando. Ojalá sea así pero sabemos que va a ser una temporada muy dura, La Dolfina está un escalón encima del resto pero no es invencible. En el 2012 ellos estaban con 40 goles y nosotros con 38 y le ganamos dos veces, en Tortugas y en Palermo.

Es el mismo equipo, es cierto que Cambiaso es impresionante lo que juega y están muy bien montados pero nosotros tenemos a Facu, Polito y a Gonza que esta temporada está jugando a un gran nivel. Volvió el Gonza que nos gusta a nosotros, con taqueo, el que anda fuerte, con dos temporadas, la de Estados Unidos e Inglaterra jugando en gran forma.

Para mí es uno de los mejores jugadores que hay, trato de copiar y aprender de él porque me encanta como juega.

Capaz que sí, que soy el más ambicioso de los tres y a veces me tienen que frenar un poco porque me quiero comer la cancha. Por ahí es por mi forma de ser y creo que al equipo hay momentos que le sirve como juego, no se si todo el partido. Si bien trato de cambiar en la cancha me resulta muy difícil y voy siempre para adelante. Me gusta ser así y al equipo tampoco le viene mal (risas).

nuestro padre, que le pone mucha garra con esto, nos facilita todo.

Estar los tres montados, vender caballos, hacer remates y que en la mayoría de los equipos siempre hay tres o cuatro caballos de la cría de Ellerstina, no es poca cosa. Eso a veces duele un poquito porque le estás jugando en contra a tu cría pero a la vez es muy lindo porque para papá y Ellerstina tener caballos jugando en todos lados es muy gratificante.

Mariano Aguerre coach Vivió el equipo desde adentro, nos va a ayudar un montón. Es un jugadorazo, ha ganado todo, nos conoce de memoria y sabe cómo jugamos. Va a aportar en caballos y nos sirve tener a alguien armando el equipo, en cómo jugar, las posiciones,etc. Sabe lo que es la

presión de jugar y ganar finales del Abierto y nos va a ayudar mucho en los momentos claves.

Reglas del polo El polo necesita crecer y para que la gente entienda un poco más, y hasta nosotros los polistas también sepamos cómo se puede jugar y qué no se puede hacer, hay que unificar las reglas. Sería muy bueno para el juego, los polistas y el público en general, dejar jugar un poco más, por ejemplo, que las redondillas existan, salvo que salgas 90º para atrás, sino no podés encarar. Hay mucho para cambiar y también para los referís va a ser más fácil. En todos lados es distinto y creo que hay que amoldarse y unificar criterios.

Gonzalo, su padre Siempre lo tratamos de incluir pero él se va apartando solo. Siempre le pedimos que arranque con nosotros como coach pero va a la primera reunión, vemos el primer video juntos y después nos abandona (risas).

Lo que te dice, la mayoría de las veces, o siempre, tiene la razón, lo que pasa es que por ser sus hijos por ahí le es más difícil transmitirlo. Pero a la larga, de una forma u otra, el mensaje siempre llega.

Más que nada nos ayuda mucho con los caballos, sabe mucho, nos dice cual nos conviene, en qué momento jugarlos, nos da un aporte enorme en Ellerstina. Tenerlo a él, a la organización que tenemos, es el combo perfecto

Abierto Argentino con más equipos Estaría bueno porque hay muchos jugadores que están para dar el salto de calidad y sumar más equipos sería darles una chance de jugar el Abierto Argentino.

Ellerstina organización Somos tres hermanos y en los lugares en los que jugamos tenemos que estar siempre bien montados para estar peleando las temporadas. Tenemos la suerte de tener a Ellerstina detrás nuestro. No es fácil estar bien montado en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos y Argentina pero gracias a Ellerstina lo podemos hacer y

Otra idea sería que los mejores 12 equipos de Argentina puedan entrar al Abierto y después de la primeras fechas se separen y terminás con 6 equipos para el Abierto y 6 para la Cámara de Diputados. Que el ganador de la Cámara clasifique directo al Abierto al año siguiente y el que salió último en el Abierto vaya a jugar la Cámara de Diputados.

Es cierto que falta un poco más de organizaciones fuertes, que se empareje un poco todo.

Habría que buscarle la vuelta.

El número ocho suena un poco corto para la cantidad de polistas de nivel que hay. Quizás se podría hacer una eliminatoria antes y hacer un Abierto de 10 y los que quedaron afuera jueguen la fase final de la Cámara de Diputados.

Nicolas Pieres “WE WILL BE A VERY OFFENSIVE TEAM” Nico Pieres landed for his second consecutive year in Santa Maria Polo Club to play the international tournament for the team RH, which he also defended in England. During his stay in Sotogrande, La Bocha Polo Magazine visited the youngest Pieres brother at the stables of his team, in Dos Lunas Polo Club, to talk about everything, specially the Season in Argentina for which he counts the days until it begins.

Sotogrande “It is the second year I come to play for RH, I also came two consecutive years for Ellerston, and the truth is that it’s very nice. After the English season arriving to Sotogrande with a different climate and fields and installations that are that good it’s always nice.

When you put on your white trousers and play trophies named things like Gold cup and Silver Cup you have a need and want to win. But its true that it’s a good tournament to play after such a demanding English season, with a very competitive polo. Sotogrande is competitive but the calendar isn’t that demanding making it more relaxed and before what comes next, the argentine season, it’s the ideal combo” UK “It was Ben Soleimani’s (RH Polo Team) first season in England and it went quiet well. We played the season with 21 goals, it was very positive and we reached quarterfinals where we lost to King Power in a very close game. The good thing was that Ben (Soleimani) was able to realize how competitive the polo is and the level of organization and horses that you need to play at this level.”

The emergence of new patrons Polo is in a tough situation everywhere which is why its good that new patrons and organizations emerge so that is can grow and those around can start seeing how you have to organize yourself to achieve good results.

Ellerston I hope it’s a see you later and returns as soon as possible. It was really beautiful to share various years with James (Packer). I played with him in Sotogrande and Argentina, where we had the fortune of having him at Ellerstina, which is an honour. It would be great for him to come back as soon as possible. Kerry, his father, was a polo fanatic, and hopefully James follows in his footsteps and maintains the great organization that he has.

King Power It has already made a lot of noise in the short time it has been in Polo.

Their first year playing in England they already won the Queens Cup and the Gold Cup. It’s a patron of the present and the future and

hopefully many people can see all the things they do. How they organize themselves, the amount of people they put to work, the horses they buy, fields, vets, ‘pilotos’, they do everything to perfection and its in clear view that if you are well organized and do things right results will be seen and you can have a top team.

The breakthrough of King Power opens up powerful markets in polo such as the Asian one…

The truth is that it’s very positive and these new markets that appear with great power do good for polo. The example is Dubai, they’re doing things very well, and patrons from Arab Emirates are investing lots and organizing very good seasons. Now they’re appearing in Asia, as in the case of King Power, they make polo grow so much more.

Argentine Season For us this upcoming season is special. I’m counting the days, and I know exactly how many to go before the argentine season starts (laughs). This year it’s a new team, with new sensations. We had a very good stage with Mariano (Aguerre) with whom we won an Open, he taught us, gave us structure, he gave us everything. A cycle has been completed and now its Polito (Pieres) his turn to enter which is something towards which we always directed him, since we began.

He’s our cousin but above all he is a very good friend, a great player, 10 goals and hopefully he will last many years with us in the team.

Its what we want, what we signed him up for and we hope to achieve results. We will have to see if they will be achieved this year or later on, we know that head on we have ‘La Dolfina’ which is a very good team, so we have to press on.

In any case by the vibe that the team has and the organization that back us results will be achieved, I hope sooner rather than later.

What most motivates is that it’s a long-term project.

The debut with Ellerstina Getting into Ellerstina has always been a dream and I knew that some day it would be fulfilled. The ability to play with my brothers and now my cousin is the most beautiful thing there is; I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I have two ‘10 goaler’ brothers, my dad was also one and hopefully I will achieve them too at some point but it honestly doesn’t worry me.

I live from polo; I love and enjoy what I do, since I was a boy and held the mallet in my hand.

Ellerstina 2015 In 2012 when we won the Open I played back and I never even imagined playing back in polo and on top of that winning an Open. In 2014 something new happened because of Mariano’s injury I went from playing back to three, which is a position that I played abroad,

but never in Argentina.

We’ll see this year what happens, I would love to play three or two, playing two is the position I most enjoy.

Playing with Facu as our back will give us lots of power and attack.

We will be a very offensive team, later we will have to see who defends (laughs).

Polito is a natural one and he is incredible at that position. Being so good and so effective in the frontal position we know we cant change him.

We are moving Facu from his original position but he is able to play in any position and is very used to playing back. I think it will be easy for him to play number 4, even more so having frontal player like the one we will have this year.

We will open this season playing the Jockey Open to try out our positions a little and the horses and then we will see what happens through the games and shape our team.

It’s a year with many new teams which is also why we have signed up to many tournaments which in previous years we didn’t play in order to try out our functionality, the new horses, etc. Playing matches in the Jockey tournament is better than playing practices, for the player and the horses.

Argentine Open I can imagine lifting the cup, I always imagine myself winning the Open. Hopefully this will be the case but we know that it will be a

very tough season, La Dolfina is a step ahead of the rest but not invincible. In 2012 they had 40 goals and we had 38 yet we beat them twice, in Tortugas and Palermo. It’s the same team, and its true its incredible how well Cambiaso plays and they have very good ponies but we have Facu, Polito and Gonza who is playing at a very high level this season. The Gonza we like returned, with good stick and ball, and fast, with two seasons, the United States one and England, playing in great shape. For me he is one of the best players around, I try to copy and learn from him because I love the way he plays.

Maybe it’s true, that I am the most ambitious of the three and sometimes they have to slow me down because I want to eat up the field.

Possibly it’s who I am and I think that there are times my way of playing helps the team, I don’t know if throughout the whole match though. I have a hard time trying to change on the field and I always push forward. I like being like this and for the team it isn’t necessarily a bad thing (laughs).

Mariano Aguerre Coach He experienced the team from the inside, he’s going to help us loads.

He’s a great player, he’s won everything, he knows us like the inside of his palm and knows how we play. He will contribute horses and it helps us to have someone preparing the team, how to play, the positions. He knows the pressure of playing and winning finals in the Open and he will help us very much in those key moments.

Gonzalo, his father We always try to include him but he distances himself alone. We always ask him to coach us but he attends the first meeting, we see the first video together and then he abandons us (laughs).

Ellerstina’s Organization We are three brothers and wherever we play we always have to be mounted properly in order to fight the seasons. We have the fortune of having Ellerstina back us up. It is not easy to be mounted in England, United States and Argentina but thanks to our father, who puts lots of passion into this, he makes it possible for us.

For all three of us to be mounted, sell horses, do auctions, and for in almost every team to always have three or four horses from Ellerstina’s breed, is not nothing. That’s what sometimes hurts because your playing against your own breeds but at the same time its beautiful because for Dad and Ellerstina to have horses playing in every part of the world is very fulfilling.

Argentine Open with more teams It would be good because there are many players ready to make that jump of quality and adding more teams means giving them a chance to play the Argentine Open.

It is true that there are a couple more strong organizations needed, to equal everything out a little more. We’ll have to find the solution.

The number eight sounds a little small for the amount of polo players out there with great level. Perhaps a playoff should be played before and organize an Open of 10 and those that were eliminated play the consolation draw.

Another idea would be that the 12 best teams in Argentina can enter the Open and after the first dates they divide and you end up with 6 teams in the Open and 6 teams in the consolation draw. That the winner of the consolation draw classifies directly into next years Open, and the loser of the Open goes directly to the consolation draw.

Polo rules Polo has to grow and for people to understand a little more, and even for us, the players, to know how you can play and what you can’t do, the rules have to be unified. It would be a very good thing for the game, the players and the public to allow us to play a little more, for example they should allow ‘redondillas’, unless they do a 90º turn backwards, because then you can collide. There are many things to change and also for the referees it would be easier. Everywhere it’s different and I think they should conform and unify criteria.

Santa María Polo Club was founded in 1965 and is now considered to be one of the best in Europe, with nine first-class fields. It is also the home of one of the most important tournaments in the world, the International Summer Tournament. Santa María Polo Club also has a successful polo school that works with children and young people to develop local talent and allow them the opportunity to enjoy a taste of this exciting game.

Sotogrande International School places sport at the heart of its mission and offers a wide range of extracurricular activities in order for the students to reach their full potential.

SIS has created dedicated academies for golf, football, sailing and tennis, and in collaboration with Santa María Polo Club, it has recently developed one for polo. It is an attractive range of activities, amongst

which the students are encouraged to find their passion. The activities complement a solid academic programme that positions the school as one of the best in Spain and also gives it a good standing internationally, with boarding facilities that attract students from all over the world.

This academy is open to children between 8 and 18 years of age, from beginners to the game to more advanced players. It is designed in such a way that the game of polo might be accessible, affordable and fun.

All students will be taught in small groups by teachers with a high level of experience and all relevant safety equipment. As well as introducing children to the sport, the academy will also function as a platform to select the best young players to compete in international tournaments with other schools. Like last year, SIS will offer two

scholarships for those talented players who would like to continue playing polo at a professional level.

The school will welcome new students in September, and fortunately there will also be a number of girls within the team. Santa María Polo Club and SIS plan to hold various events to promote polo and the academy.

Un polifacético artista plástico con una larga trayectoria internacional, que ahora llega a Sotogrande para mostrar sus trabajos en torno a este noble animal. Carlos Barbieri es un apasionado de los caballos. Una devoción que comenzó a muy temprana edad, cuando un profesor de dibujo le transmitió sus conocimientos con gran cariño y empezó a retratar a este gran animal en todas sus facetas.

Sus primeros dibujos fueron a lápiz, evolucionando, después a la acuarela hasta llegar al óleo; técnica en la que se encuentra trabajando en esta etapa de su vida.

Una vida dedicada al arte, que le ha llevado a realizar innumerables muestras de interés, relacionándose con los mejores artistas ecuestres y compartiendo, con ellos, amistad y trabajo. Una destacada trayectoria, que se vio ampliamente completada cuando Barbieri decidió unir su arte al poder de la información para comunicar sobre polo en Argentina,

naciendo, así, La Guía del Polo que le abrió las puertas a este interesante deporte. En torno a él, el artista ha desarrollado interesantes proyectos de comunicación, como la Historia del Polo; las notas a Alberto Pedro Heguy sobre la Copa Heguy Sauce, o las notas en la revista aniversario de Polo & Polistas, entre otros muchos.

Consolidado en el ámbito del polo, Barbieri decide dar un paso más en su vida y dedicar su tiempo a dar clases de dibujo y pintura a niños con discapacidad en una escuela de equinoterapia en Pilar (Buenos Aires) produciéndose, según explica el propio artista, un cambio fundamental en su vida: “La sonrisa de aquellos niños era para mí como una bendición”, comenta al respecto. Una nueva pasión que lo

condujo hasta España, donde vino a Sotogrande para conocer la Fundación Santa María Polo Club y mostrar a los pequeño su arte.

Ahora Barbieri continua con la firme idea de continuar creciendo en este fascinante mundo. Entre los diversos planes en los que anda embarcado, destaca el nacimiento de Galería Barbieri. Un espacio artístico donde el autor muestra sus obras junto a una línea de polos y accesorios pintados a mano con el uso de las viñetas que tantas satisfacciones le dieron. Con la Dirección comercial de Beatriz O’Donnel, Barbieri ofrece, además, en este centro, sus conocidas clases de dibujo y pintura.

Carlos Barbieri is mad about horses. His passion for them began at a very early age when, with great care and attention, an art teacher imparted his knowledge to the young student who then started drawing the animal from every angle. His first drawings were done with pencil; he then evolved to using watercolours before moving onto oil paints; the technique he is currently working with during this stage of his life.

He has dedicated his life to art, holding a countless number of interesting exhibits, hanging out with the greatest equestrian artists of the time and forming friendships and working relationships with them.

Barbieri’s standout career became more widely known when he decided to unite his art with the power of information to spread the word of Argentine polo, creating the

La Guía del Polo (The Polo Guide), which opened up the doors to this fascinating sport. On the back of that, the artist has developed interesting communication projects, such as La Historia del Polo (the History of Polo); the illustrations for Alberto Pedro Heguy’s notes on the Heguy Sauce Cup, as well as contributing to the anniversary edition of the Polo & Polistas magazine, among a whole host of other things.

Already well established within the world of polo, Barbieri decided to look for something more in life and now dedicates his time to teaching drawing and painting to disabled children in a hippotherapy school in Pilar (Buenos Aires) which, according to the artist himself, has completely changed his life: “Seeing those children smile is a blessing for me”, he

notes. This new passion has taken him to Spain, where he came to Sotogrande to see the Santa María Polo Club Foundation at first hand and showcase his artwork to youngsters.

Now, Barbieri is determined to continue growing in this fascinating world. Among the many ideas he has lined up, the launch of the Galería Barbieri stands out. An artistic space where he displays his work beside a line of hand-painted accessories designed with the drawings that gave him so much satisfaction.

Ricardo Recio MEMORIA DEL POLO Pionero del polo en Sotogrande. Ricardo Recio, fallecido a principios de este año 2015, fue testigo del desarrollo del polo en Campamento y Sotogrande y uno de sus más ilustres seguidores desde sus inicios.

Ricardo Recio (Moguer, Huelva, 1918) falleció en enero de 2015, siendo hasta los últimos días uno de los más ilustres y fieles seguidores del polo en Sotogrande. Deporte que se convirtió en una de las grandes aficiones de su vida, empujado por su pasión por los caballos, y del que conoció sus inicios en la pionera cancha de la barriada sanroqueña de Campamento, llegando incluso a disputar varios de los primeros partidos de polo de la emblemática cancha de la playa de Sotogrande.

Recio, en una entrevista en La Bocha Polo Magazine el verano de 2006 (en la edición 21), ya desgranó la historia y origen del polo en Campamento, influenciado por Gibraltar, hasta su explosión en Sotogrande. Ahora, su hijo, Álvaro Recio, apoyado en palabras de su padre, recuerda su extraordinaria afición al polo, un legado que ha dejado grabado en su familia.

“Era el primero en llegar a la cancha y el último en irse”, explica Álvaro Recio. “El polo, y en especial el polo en Sotogrande, fue su gran pasión. Comenzó a practicarlo en los años 40 en Campamento, siempre entre amigos. Años más tarde llegaría su gran desarrollo en Sotogrande, a la que acudió invitado por Enrique Zobel para disputar los primeros encuentros que se jugaron en la mítica cancha de la playa junto a nombres como el de su amigo Andrés Parladé.

Vivió los comienzos de la cancha de la playa, la de Paniagua, la de Río y finalmente el gran complejo que es hoy Santa María Polo Club”, detalla.

Tal era su afición que llegó a jugar algunos partidos entre amigos hasta la década de los 90 y “hasta hace unos 10 años continuó montando a caballo”, subraya Álvaro Recio.

“Disfrutaba como pocos con el polo en Sotogrande, rodeado de amigos y de su familia, a la que nos ha dejado esa gran

devoción por el mundo del caballo y el polo. Hijos y nietos siguen la tradición”, asegura.

“Siempre decía que tenía la curiosidad de ver cómo funcionaría un torneo nocturno en Sotogrande. Pensaba que un partido de polo por la noche sería todo un éxito: con iluminación, restaurantes…y que esa idea tendría fama”, recuerda su hijo.

El propio Ricardo Recio contó en su entrevista en estas mismas páginas cómo vivió los inicios del polo en Campamento en los años 40. “Primero fue Gibraltar y luego Campamento, los primeros lugares en los que se jugó al polo en San Roque aunque la cancha era más reducida que la actual. Vino de lo mano de los oficiales del ejército inglés y de gibraltareños que residían por aquella época en esa zona”, explicaba. “Yo he montado toda mi vida porque siempre hemos tenido caballos pero fue con la llegada a Campamento cuando conocí el polo. Gracias a nuestra amistad, Andrés Parladé también venía a jugar a Campamento”, comentaba.

“Antes de que en 1966 Enrique Zobel nos invitase a jugar en la cancha de la playa de Sotogrande, también acudíamos a Marruecos, donde el polo estaba más profesionalizado y había bastantes competiciones. Había un equipo formado por Jaime Russo, Richard O’Neil, Andrés Parladé y el Conde de la Maza. Acudíamos como el Club de Polo Campamento. Cuando íbamos a Rabat teníamos nuestro handicap correspondiente, Jaime tenía 1 de handicap y a mí me ponían 3 en aquella época, igual que a Andrés Parladé”, recordaba Ricardo en su entrevista.

Sin duda, uno de los pioneros del polo en la zona y testigo de la instauración, crecimiento y desarrollo del polo en Sotogrande.

Ricardo Recio POLO MEMORIES A Sotogrande polo pioneer. Ricardo Recio, who passed away at the beginning of 2015, bore witness to the growth of polo in Campamento and Sotogrande and was one of the sports most distinguished supporters from its early days.

Ricardo Recio (Moguer, Huelva, 1918) passed away in January 2015 and was one of Sotogrande’s most distinguished and loyal polo fans right up until his final days. The sport became one of his fondest pastimes, spurred on by his love of horses, and one he got involved with back in its early days on the groundbreaking pitch in the neighbouring town to San Roque, Campamento, and also played in a number of the first polo matches to ever take place on the emblematic Sotogrande beach pitch.

In an interview with La Bocha Polo Magazine in the summer of 2006 (in edition 21), Recio explained the history and the origins of polo in Campamento, which were influenced by Gibraltar, right up to the sport’s explosion in Sotogrande. Now his son, Álvaro Recio, helped by his father’s words, remembers his extraordinary love of polo, a legacy his family has kept going.

“He would be the first to arrive at the pitch and the last to leave”, explains Álvaro Recio. “Polo, and Sotogrande polo in particular, was his great passion.

He started playing in the 1940s in Campamento, in games that were always among friends. The huge development of the sport in Sotogrande would come years later, and for that he was invited

by Enrique Zobel to take part in the first ever games to be played on the legendary beach pitch along with other players such as his close friend Andrés Parladé.

He was around during the early days of the beach pitch, the Paniagua and Río pitches and finally the huge complex that today is known as the Santa María Polo Club”, he explains.

Such was his love of the sport that he was still playing some games with his friends into the 1990s and “was still mounting horses right up until about 10 years ago”, Álvaro Recio highlights.

“He enjoyed polo more than anyone in Sotogrande, surrounded by his friends and family, and we have inherited his great devotion for the world of horses and polo. His children and grandchildren continue the tradition”, he notes.

“He also spoke about how he would be curious to see how a night time tournament might work in Sotogrande.

He was of the opinion that a polo match at night would be a huge success: with floodlights, restaurants… and that would be a unique concept” recalls his son.

In an interview in these very pages Ricardo Recio spoke about his experiences during the early days of polo in Campamento in the 1940s. “Gibraltar and then Campamento were the first

places to play polo in Sotogrande although the pitches were smaller than they are nowadays. It began with officials from the British army and Gibraltar natives who were residing in the area at the time”, he explained. “I’ve been riding my whole life because we always had horses, but it wasn’t until I went to Campamento that I discovered polo. Because of our friendship, Andrés Parladé would also come to play in Campamento”, he noted.

“Before Enrique Zobel invited us to play on the Sotogrande beach pitch in 1966, we would also travel to Morocco, where polo was more professionally run and there were quite a lot of competitions.

There was a team made up of Jaime Russo, Richard O’Neil, Andrés Parladé and the Conde de la Maza. We would go to places like the Campamento Polo Club. When we went to Rabat we were given our corresponding handicaps, Jamie had a 1-goal handicap and I was given a 3 at the time, the same as Andrés Parladé”, recalled Ricardo in his interview.

He was undoubtedly one of the area’s polo pioneers and a first-hand witness of the establishment, growth and development of the sport in Sotogrande.

Seven Sevens se consagró campeón del XXII Memorial Fundador D. Enrique Zobel, torneo de mediano handicap que forma parte de la Temporada de Verano y que organizó Santa María Polo Club.

Seven Sevens venció a Dr. A por 7.5 a 7 en una gran final y se adjudicó el tradicional certamen que inaugura la temporada de verano de mediano handicap.

Como bien lo indica el marcador fue una final muy disputada, con dos equipos demostrando un gran nivel de juego y sin darse grandes ventajas en todo el partido.

La formación ganadora, con Nikita Vozianov, Rosendo Torreguitar, Pelayo Berazadi y Nicolás Espain, tuvo que trabajar y mucho para hacer valer ese medio gol de handicap a su favor, que fue decisivo en la definición.

Dr. A, con Abdel Rahman Abbar, Juan I. Otharán, Maximiliano Malacalza y Santiago Laborde, le puso presión a su rival hasta los segundos finales del encuentro pero no logró, pese a descontar tres goles de diferencia en el último chukker, revertir el marcador a su favor.

Fue un gran cierre para este atractivo torneo que además coronó a Shakib Polo como tercero en el podio tras derrotar a Woodchester por 12 a 6 y clasificó a Bayswater-Sapphire en la quinta posición luego de vencer a K2 9 a 6.5.

Seis equipos de hasta 12 goles de handicap disputaron este certamen que tuvo como sede las canchas de Puente de Hierro de Santa María Polo Club y Ayala Polo Club.

Seven Sevens were recently crowned champions of the twenty second medium-goal Founder D. Enrique Zobel Memorial Tournament that forms part of the summer season organised by the Santa María Polo Club.

Seven Sevens defeated Dr. A by 7.5 goals to 7 in an exciting final match and were proclaimed victors of the yearly contest that signals the beginning of the medium-goal summer season.

As the final score indicates, it was a closely fought match, with both teams performing at a high level and neither allowing the other to move far ahead at any point.

The winning team, made up of Nikita Vozianov, Rosendo Torreguitar, Pelayo Berazadi and Nicolás Espain, had to

work hard to make good use of the half goal they received prior to the match due to the handicap difference.

Dr. A were recently crowned champions of the second medium-goal Manuel de Prado Colón de Carvajal tournament that forms part of the summer season organised by the Santa María Polo Club.

Dr. A venció en la final a Seven Sevens por 9 a 8.5 y se tomó revancha de la final del Memorial Zobel, cuando cayó ante el mismo rival.

Dr. A defeated Seven Sevens by 9 to 8.5 in a final in which they took revenge for the final of the Zobel Memorial Tournament the previous weekend in which they lost out to the same team.

Estos dos equipos jugaron una gran final, muy disputada y con gran nivel de polo, en la cancha principal de Puente de Hierro y poniéndole un broche de oro al trofeo Memorial Manuel de Prado Colón de Carvajal.

Shakib Polo se quedó con el tercer puesto del torneo al vencer a Equus por 10 a 9 al tiempo que Bayswater-Sapphire se clasificó quinto tras vencer a Woodchester por 10 a 8.

The two teams played a well played and closely fought final on the main field at Puente de Hierro, finishing off the Manuel de Prado Colón de Carvajal tournament in style.

Shakib Polo finished in third place after defeating Equus by 10 goals to 9, and Bayswater-Sapphire came in fifth after a 10 to 8 goal win over Woodchester.

The zones of the Opens that make up the 2015 Triple Crown have been drawn in the AAP offices.

On Thursday 30/7 in the headquarters of the Argentine Polo Association in Palermo, and in the presence of the AAP president, Francisco E. Dorignac; the president of the AAJP (Argentine Polo Players Association), Pablo Llorente; the players Bautista Heguy and Ignacio Novillo Astrada, as well as representatives from the participating teams, the names of the zones for the big opens that make up the Argentine Triple Crown were drawn: the Tortugas Country Club Open Championship and the 122nd Hurlingham and Palermo Opens.

In Tortugas, La Dolfina, Alegría and Chapaleufú will play on Zone A; while Ellerstina, Las Monjitas and La Aguada will play on Zone B. As for Hurlingham, Zone A will be set aside for La Dolfina, Las Monjitas, La Aguada and the higher-handicap team to qualify; while Zone B will be reserved for Ellerstina, Alegría, Chapaleufú and the lower-handicap team to qualify.
