An historic season and a monumental date. The Gold Cup is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Sotogrande. It is almost an unwritten tradition, to devote these first lines to going on a journey through the world of polo riding POLO by La Bocha. With a review of the most outstanding competitions in the world, with the best images and some of the most important milestones of the last international season underway.
Es para esta casa una bonita coincidencia que la opinión y tribuna que cierra esta edición de la revista la suscriba Paola Zobel, hija de Íñigo Zobel y nieta de Enrique Zobel. La coincidencia recae al recordar que en la publicación especial por el 30º aniversario de la Copa de Oro, también elaborada por esta misma editorial, fue precisamente Enrique Zobel quién dedicase entonces unas emotivas palabras para rememorar la trayectoria del polo en la urbanización, sus inicios y proyectos a largo plazo. Bonita forma de tomar el relevo. Nunca vino mejor a colación este dato cuando precisamente su nieta Paola es quién trata de impulsar nuevamente el polo en Sotogrande al más alto nivel competitivo, con la presencia de varios de los mejores jugadores del mundo y algunas de las organizaciones más prestigiosas de este deporte.
It is beautiful coincidence for this publishing house that the opinion piece that closes this edition of the magazine is written by Paolo Zobel, daughter of Íñigo Zobel and grandchild of Enrique Zobel. The coincidence comes when we remember that in the special publication for the 30th anniversary of the Gold Cup, also produced by this publisher, it was indeed Enrique Zobel who then devoted some emotive words to remembering the trajectory of polo in the resort, its beginnings and long-term projects. A lovely way to take over. This fact was never more relevant when it is indeed his grandchild Paolo who is the person who is once again driving polo in Sotogrande to the highest competitive level, with the presence of several of the best players in the world and some of the most prestigious organisations in this sport.
Creíamos más adecuado y acorde, presentar una líneas de elogio hacia lo que comenzó como una pasión de Enrique Zobel en el año 1965 con la construcción de la cancha de la playa y lo que hoy disfrutamos, uno de los Grand Slam más notables del calendario mundial de polo. Recordar que aquella primera copa de oro se celebró en 1971 y fue el cuarteto de Casarejo Portales quién levantó aquel trofeo primigenio, tras superar al conjunto Sotogrande en la final.
Entre todos estos nombres propios que tanto han hecho por ensalzar el polo en Sotogrande, mención especial a la familia Mora-Figueroa que ha jugado un papel fundamental desde hace varias décadas, hay una figura que no nos gustaría que se quedase atrás entre tanto homenaje.
David Stirling apareció por primera vez en la urbanización, de la mano de Andrés Parladé, en el año 1987. Desde ese momento se convirtió en un personaje indispensable para entender el crecimiento y desarrollo, a nivel internacional, que ha adquirido el torneo de polo. Su bagaje, conocimiento y sapiencia de toda la gran familia del polo permitió que este deporte en Sotogrande alcanzase hitos que parecían imposibles; como presentar una temporada de más de 30 equipos y acoger a más de 1.300 caballos en las instalaciones locales.
Y en nuestra pequeña modestia, también nos gustaría recordar que ya son más de tres décadas las que cumplimos narrando y divulgando todos los parabienes del polo en Sotogrande por el mundo. Por todo ello, no podemos estar más satisfechos y orgullosos de presentar esta revista, en plena temporada alta de polo y en un año tan especial. Brindemos por otro medio siglo de polo en Sotogrande. ●
We believed it was more appropriate and fitting, to present a few lines of praise for what began as the passion of Enrique Zobel in 1965 with the construction of the beach pitch and what we enjoy today, one of the most notable Grand Slams on the world polo calendar. It is worth remembering that the first Gold Cup took place in 1971 and it was the side of Casarejo Portales that lifted the first trophy, after beating the Sotogrande side in the final.
Among all the big names who have done so much to exalt polo in Sotogrande, a special mention goes to the Mora-Figueroa family which has played a crucial role for several decades, there is someone who we would not like to be forgotten among so many tributes. David Stirling appeared for the first time in the resort, alongside Andrés Parladé, in 1987. Since then, he has become a crucial figure for understanding the growth and development, internationally, acquired by the polo tournament. His baggage, knowledge and wisdom of the entire big polo family enabled this sport in Sotogrande to reach milestones that seemed impossible; such as presenting a season with more than 30 teams and housing more than 1,300 horses in the local facilities. And with a little modesty from us, we would also like to remember that we have spent more than three decades narrating and disseminating all the polo celebrations in Sotogrande around the world. Consequently, we couldn´t be more satisfied and proud to present this magazine, in the midst of the polo season and in such a special year. Destacar que la familia Zóbel, llegada desde Filipinas, fue una de las fundadoras de la urbanización. Enrique Zóbel practicaba el polo de manera habitual. Es más, era un auténtico apasionado de este deporte. Además, y probablemente debido a la tradición emprendedora de su familia, tenía un carácter que le impulsó a promover diferentes iniciativas. Durante muchos años, el polo en Sotogrande se jugaba a orillas del mar. Aquellas canchas, situadas junto al club de playa el Cucurucho (hoy Trocadero Sotogrande) eran, sin discusión, el punto de encuentro de las tardes de verano en Sotogrande. ➢
It is worth highlighting that the Zóbel family, which came from the Philippines, was one of the founders of the resort. Enrique Zóbel played polo regularly. Furthermore, he was a true enthusiast of this sport. Also, and probably due to the entrepreneurial tradition of his family, he had a character that led him to undertake different initiatives. For many years, polo in Sotogrande was played on the sea shore. Those pitches, located next to El Cucurucho beach club (now Trocadero Sotogrande) were, undoubtedly, the gathering point of summer evenings in Sotogrande. ➢ ➢
Una tradición que comenzó en la recordada cancha de la playa, en el año 1965, gracias a Enrique Zobel, quién fuese uno de los grande valedores y promotores de este deporte desde los inicios de la urbanización y que impulsó la creación de la cancha de polo de la playa, escenario de los primeros encuentros en el resort. Un legado que se recuerda cada año con la celebración del Memorial Fundador Enrique Zobel.
A tradition that began on the memorable beach pitch, in 1965, thanks to Enrique Zobel, who was one of the great patrons and promotors of this sport from the beginnings of the resort and he endorsed the creation of the beach polo pitch, the setting of the first matches in the resort. ➢ Los caballos se guardaban entonces en las cuadras cerca del Hotel Sotogrande. Formaba parte de la vida diaria el ver cómo llevaban y traían los caballos a través de la urbanización. El campo de polo quedaba pegado a la arena misma y eso hacía que mucha gente disfrutase de los partidos en bañador. Además, los caballos se bañaban en la playa al terminar los partidos para refrescarse tras una intensa jornada de polo.
➢➢ The horses were then kept in the stables close to Hotel Sotogrande. It was part of daily life to see how horses were brought and taken through the resort. The polo pitch was right next to the sand and that meant that many people enjoyed the matches in swimwear. Also, the horses bathed on the beach at the end of the matches to cool down after an intense day of polo.
Tras los primeros torneos familiares, en 1971 se celebró la primera edición de la Copa de oro Sotogrande, instituida por Joseph McMicking. Un torneo inaugural que levantaría y quedaría para la historia el conjunto de Casarejo Portales, formado por: Pedro Domecq, Mariano Olazábal, Antonio Herrera y ‘Tito’ Gómez, superando en la final al equipo de Sotogrande, en el que ya figuraba un jovencísimo Ramón Mora-Figueroa.
Following the first family tournaments, in 1971 the first edition of the Sotogrande Gold Cup took place, established by Joseph McMicking. De aquella primera final, Tito Gomez, recordaba emocionado en una entrevista concedida hace algunos años a esta misma publicación, entonces llamada La Bocha, que “más de 600 personas acudieron a presenciar el partido en la cancha de la playa, incluso se llegaron a mandar invitaciones hasta a Inglaterra o Alemania”. Explicaba también, como anécdota de aquel mítico encuentro, que Pedro Domecq, que por entonces estaba prestando el servicio militar, “se quejó de una fisura en el brazo cuando nos clasificamos para la semifinal, con el objetivo que le permitieran salir. Por ello llevaba el brazo izquierdo escayolado, dejando la mano libre para poder agarrar las riendas, ya que según él, lo vigilaban para comprobar que estaba lesionado”, comentaba. Ya en aquella época, ilustres apellidos como Parladé, Gil de Biedma, Prado, Berazadi, Melián, Vallejo Nájera, Aguirre, Asis o Gabriel ya se arrimaban a ese ilusionante comienzo del polo en Sotogrande. Unos inicios que acabarían desembarcando en un gran torneo internacional, al que cada año acuden cientos de jugadores y caballos de todos los continentes y alguna de las organizaciones de polo más destacadas del mundo.
En 1973 se celebró la primera edición de Copa de Plata, cuyo vencedor fue el equipo de Sotogrande y al año siguiente se inauguraba la cancha de polo de Paniagua. Un fuerte temporal y crecida de agua se lleva por delante la cancha de la playa en 1984 y meses más tarde se iniciaría la construcción de las canchas de Río, que entre 1985 y 1986 tomaron el relevo de Paniagua y se convertirían durante años en la sede central de los torneos de polo en la urbanización. Mencionar también que la edición de 1989 quedará marcada en el histórico por su obligada suspensión a causa de la peste equina. ➢

In 1973, the first edition of the Silver Cup took place, the winner was the Sotogrande team, and the following year the Paniagua polo pitch was opened. A heavy storm and flooding destroyed the beach pitch in 1984 and months later construction began on the Río pitches, which between 1985 and 1986 took over from Paniagua and for years became the main venue for polo tournaments in the resort. It is also worth mentioning that the 1989 edition will go down in the history books given its forced suspension due to horse sickness. ➢➢

➢ Resaltar que desde los inicios, toda la organización y coordinación del polo corrió a cargo de Enrique Zobel, gran apasionado e impulsor de este deporte en el resort. Una tarea que dirigió hasta el inicio de los años 90, cuando solicitó a su gran amigo Ramón Mora-Figueroa, hacerse cargo de la planificación de la temporada, tras sufrir el accidente. Una tarea que la Familia Mora-Figueroa ha desempeñado desde entonces hasta que casualmente en este 2021, en el 50º aniversario de la Copa de Oro, es la familia Zobel nuevamente, a través de Paola (nieta de Enrique e hija de Íñigo Zobel), quién ha vuelto a liderar la organización de la temporada en Sotogrande, con un gran protagonismo de Ayala Polo Club con un notable elenco de equipos de Alto y Mediano Hándicap.
El inicio de la década de los 90 impulsaría una mayor profesionalización del Torneo Verano, así como de las diferentes copas, con el aterrizaje de grandes organizaciones y patrones internacionales de gran prestigio, así como el apoyo y patrocinio de importantes marcas comerciales. En 1998 participaron por primera vez más de 1.000 caballos en el torneo, un paso hacia delante que puso en marcha un crecimiento exponencial año tras año, edición tras edición, que iría aumentando por encima de la treintena los equipos profesionales participantes torneo cada verano en Sotogrande. Diez años más tarde, en 2008, llega el salto definitivo a nivel cuantitativo y cualitativo con la inauguración de la zona de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club. La gran explosión a todos los niveles del polo en Sotogrande, en calidad de profesionalización, consumo, asistentes, espacios, canchas, equipos y mucho más. Un increíble viaje durante más de 50 años. Un apasionante recorrido que hoy se expande con una sólida imagen internacional como destino ecuestre y polístico de gran calidad y máxima excelencia, gracias a instalaciones y entidades como Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, Ayala Polo Club o el propio Santa María Polo Club.
Un increíble sueño que se convirtió en realidad y que ya suma medio siglo. ●

Ten years later, in 2008, came the definitive leap on a quantitative and qualitative leap with the opening of the area of Los Pinos at Santa María Polo Club. The great explosion at all levels of polo in Sotogrande, in terms of professionalization, consumption, attendees, spaces, pitches, teams and much more. An incredible journey for more than 50 years. ● An exciting trip that is now expanded with a strong international image as a high-quality equestrian and polo destination and utmost excellence, thanks to facilities and entities such as Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, Ayala Polo Club and Santa María Polo Club. Guillermo, un placer tenerle en las páginas de nuestra revista y más aún de verte jugar en Sotogrande. Hablemos de los comienzos. ¿Cómo fueron los inicios en el mundo del polo? La pasión me viene de familia, obvio, mi padre fue jugador muchos años. Yo me crié en el campo, en Lobos [Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina], con caballos, taqueando todo el día y desde pequeño viajaba con mi padre a los torneos y crecí con esa experiencia de la vida del jugador de polo. Él también, desde muy joven, jugaba en Europa aunque tuvo más consolidada su presencia en Estados Unidos casi toda su carrera. Compitió muchas temporadas allá y sentó base allí.

¿Y las primeras oportunidades de competir? Igual, de la mano de mi padre, él jugaba mucho en California [USA], prácticamente pasaba medio año allí y poco a poco fui entrando en equipos, primero de 8 goles, pasé a 12 goles y así. La primera vez que disputé un partido importante, siempre lo recordaré, fue con doce años y sustituía al patrón del equipo de mi papá que estaba lesionado. No olvidaré esa presión de salir a jugar un domingo a las tres de la tarde, en la cancha 1, con la grada al máximo y ese cosquilleo y tensión. Hoy lo pienso y sonrío pero entonces se hizo duro [ríe]. Ése fue el inicio, jugué toda esa temporada sustituyendo al patrón y al año siguiente, ya con 13/14 años, comencé a jugar de titular del equipo, sería por el año 1998.

¿Y desde ahí, como hace uno para convertirse en un 10 goles? Hubo un momento importante de inflexión en mi carrera durante el año 2001, yo andaba con 3 goles, y me invitó Memo Gracida [10 goles en ese momento] a jugar con él en California. Jugué toda la temporada en su equipo, estuvimos muy bien y pasé a los 6 goles, eso supuso un salto enorme en mi carrera, así como una etapa muy importante para adquirir conocimiento y experiencia. En esa época jugaba mucho en Estados Unidos y prácticamente nada en Argentina, toda la organización la teníamos montada en norteamérica. Pero ese salto me permitió tomar notoriedad y abrirme camino para la temporada argentina, desde ahí comenzaron a invitarme a jugar los Novillo Astrada o Camilo Bautista. Cuando empiezas a jugar en esas organizaciones es cuando explotas tu potencial. Los demás, trabajo y superación en cada torneo. ➢

Guillermo, a pleasure to have you among the pages of our magazine and even more so to see you play in Sotogrande. Let´s talk about your beginnings. How did you get started in the world of polo? The passion comes from my family, obviously, my father was a player for many years. I grew up on the course, in Lobos, (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina), with horses, hitting all day and from an early age I travelled with my father to tournaments and I grew up with that experience of the life of a polo player. He too, from a very young age, played in Europe although his presence was more well-established in the United States for almost his entire career. He competed for many seasons there and established his base there.
And your first chances to compete? The same, through my father, he played a lot in California (USA), he practically spent half the year there and I gradually made it into teams, first 8 handicap goal teams, I moved up to 12 goals and so on. The first time I played an important match, I will always remember it, it was at the age of twelve and I replaced the patron of my Dad´s team who was injured. I will never forget the pressure of going out to play on a Sunday at three in the afternoon, on pitch 1, with the stand packed and that tingling feeling and tension. Now I think about it and smile but back then it was tough (laughs). That was the beginning, I played that entire season replacing the patron and the next year, aged 13/14, I began to play as a starter in the team, back in 1998.
And from there, what does a player do to become a 10 handicap goal player? There was an important turning point in my career during 2001, I had 3 goals, and Memo Gracida (10 goals at that point) invited me to play with him in California. I played the entire season in his team, we were really good and I moved up to 6 goals, that was an enormous leap in my career, as well as a very important stage to acquire knowledge and experience. At that time, I played a lot in the United States and practically nothing in Argentina, we had the entire organisation set-up in North America. But that leap enabled me to become well-known and open up a path for the Argentine season, from there on the Novillo Astrada siblings and Camilo Bautista began to invite me to play. When you begin to play in those organisations, that is when you exploit your potential. The rest is about work and improvement in every tournament.
¿Cómo valora la temporada hasta la llegada a Sotogrande? Bien. Empezamos pronto en Estados Unidos y tuvimos una linda temporada llegando a la final de la Copa de Oro con Tonkawa y en el US Open perdimos en Cuartos de Final contra el equipo de Cambiaso que acabaron ganando. Mientras que en Inglaterra perdimos en Cuartos de Final tanto en la Copa de Oro como en la Copa de la Reina. Nos quedamos con una sensación agridulce porque estábamos convencidos de que había equipo para llegar más lejos y me hubiese gustado alcanzar algo más, estuve con Murus Sanctus/La Madeleine. Para mí, ésta ha sido la temporada más competitiva que viví en Inglaterra en los últimos años. Podía ganar cualquier equipo y todos los partidos fueron muy reñidos.
Ahora desembarca en Sotogrande para una temporada muy especial con el 50º aniversario de la Copa de Oro. ¿Qué referencias tenía? Estuve una vez hace muchos años pero nunca vine a jugar el Alto en agosto y para mí es como una primera vez, estoy feliz de venir a Sotogrande. Especialmente agradecido a Alejandro Aznar y al equipo Marqués de Riscal que me han dado esta oportunidad. El lugar es espectacular, el recibimiento que nos han hecho ha sido increíble, la gente tiene muy buena onda y para la familia es ideal. Se armó una temporada muy competitiva y creo que va a estar muy bien. Además, las canchas son increíbles, hacía tiempo no veía algo tan bueno. Estoy feliz de estar aquí. What is your assessment of the season up to your arrival in Sotogrande? Good. We began early in the United States and we had a nice season reaching the final of the Gold Cup with Tonkawa and at the US Open we lost in the Quarter Final against Cambiaso´s team which went on to win. Meanwhile, in England we lost in the Quarter Final in both the Gold Cup and the Queen´s Cup. We were left with a bittersweet feeling because we were convinced that there was the team to go further so I would have liked to go a little further, we were left with Murus Sanctus/ La Madeleine. For me, this has been the most competitive season I have experienced in England in recent years. The team could have won and all the matches were very closely-fought. Now, you have arrived in Sotogrande for a very special season with the 50th anniversary of the Gold Cup. What references did you have? I was here many years ago but I never came to play the High Handicap in August and for me it is like the first time, I am happy to come to Sotogrande. I am especially thankful to Alejandro Aznar and to the Marqués de Riscal team who have given me this chance. The venue is spectacular, the welcome we have got has been incredible, people have very good vibes and it is ideal for family. I very competitive season has been set-up and I think that it is going to be very good. Also, the pitches are incredible, I haven´t seen anything so good in a while. I am happy to be here.

¿Qué objetivo se han marcado con Marqués de Riscal? Uno siempre juega para ganar. Eso está claro, las expectativas siempre son estar en finales y competir por las copas. Luego ya veremos cómo responde el equipo y los rivales, pero de partida vamos con las máximas aspiraciones.
¿Qué le parece la urbanización y el ambiente a polo que se respira? Genial. Me encanta el clima, la vida que se hace aquí, el ambiente familiar, la amabilidad de la gente y por supuesto, las instalaciones de polo que son impresionantes. Además, espero me inviten a jugar al golf que es otra de mis pasiones [sonríe].
Murus Sanctus fue uno de los equipos revelación de la pasada Triple Corona en Argentina. ¿Cómo afronta el próximo curso? Los refuerzos de Mac Donough y Nero deberían permitirle darles el gran salto de calidad. Seguramente, con los refuerzos, consigamos dar ese salto. Estamos entusiasmados por jugar la temporada argentina. El año pasado ya dimos un gran nivel y para este curso se preparó un equipo fantástico. Sabemos que las incorporaciones nos van a ayudar a optar por pelear finales y buscar campeonatos pero lo tomamos con responsabilidad y trabajo. ¿Creen que pueden ser la alternativa a La Dolfina y Ellerstina? Exactamente. Creo que este año, primera vez en muchas temporadas en Argentina, hay cuatro equipos que pueden pelear por la entorchada con opciones reales. La Natividad, Murus Sanctus, La Dolfina y Ellerstina pueden luchar por la victoria con niveles casi parejos. Aunque Ellerstina, en mi opinión, puede partir con algo de ventaja al mantener el mismo bloque por segundo año consecutivo. Todo está por ver. ¿Cuál es el gran objetivo que le falta deportivamente hablando? Desde pequeño, como el de casi todos los jugadores, mi sueño siempre fue ganar el Abierto. Equipo tenemos y motivación sobra. Ahora toca pelear.
¿Quién ha sido el rival más duro con el que se ha enfrentado? Como equipo, La Dolfina. Durante años fue un conjunto dominante y cuando estaban bien, era imposible superarles. Pude ganarles dos veces, una en Hurlingham y otra Palermo, el pasado año, pero han marcado un época eso es indiscutible. Y a nivel individual, a lo largo de tantos años me he cruzado con muchísimos buenos jugadores, en estos momentos, los diez goles son todos increíbles. Es un lujo poder enfrentarse a jugadores tan buenos y del nivel de los Pieres, Cambiaso, Juanma [Nero], Pablo [Mac Donough] Pelón Stirling, Hilario [Ulloa], etc. Es todo un espectáculo y un privilegio. Es buenísimo jugar contra ellos, te exigen al máximo y elevan la barrera del deporte. Cada día tienes que superarte para estar a la altura de los mejores jugadores del mundo y eso es gracia a la competitividad. Competir contra los mejores del mundo es lo que te permite crecer como jugador.
¿Y el mejor compañero? He tenido la suerte de jugar con grandes compañeros que también son rivales. Por supuesto Adolfito, Juanma, Hilario, los Novillo Astrada o Memo Gracida. He tenido muchos grandes compañeros y he podido aprender mucho de ellos.

What target has been set with Marqués de Riscal? One always plays to win. That is clear, the expectation is always to be in the finals and compete for the cups. Then, we will see how the team and opponents respond, but at the outset we go into it with the top aspirations.
What do you think of the resort and the polo atmosphere that is experienced here? Fantastic. I love the climate, the life here, the family atmosphere, the kindness of the people and of course, the polo facilities which are impressive. Also, I hope I am invited to play golf which is another of my passions (smiles). Murus Sanctus was one of the breakthrough teams of the last Triple Crown in Argentina. How are you approaching next year? The reinforcements with Mac Donough and Nero should enable you to take the big leap up in terms of quality. Of course, with the reinforcement, we can make that leap. We are delighted to play the Argentine season. Last year we played at a great level and a fantastic team has been prepared for this year. We know that the additions will help us to compete for finals and aim for championships but we will go about things with responsibility and work. Do you believe that you can be the alternative to La Dolfina and Ellerstina? Exactly. I think that this year, for the first time in many seasons in Argentina, there are four teams that can compete for the title with a real chance. La Natividad, Murus Sanctus, La Dolfina and Ellerstina can battle for victory on an almost equal level. However, Ellerstina, in my opinion, may have a slight advantage as it has kept the same team for the second consecutive year. Everything remains to be seen. What is the big aim you have left in terms of sport? From a young age, like almost all the players, my dream was always to win the Open. We have a team and an abundance of motivation. Now it is time to battle.
Who has been the toughest opponent you have faced? As a team, La Dolfina. For years, it was a dominant side and when they played well, it was impossible to beat them. I was able to beat them twice, once in Hurlingham and again in Palermo, last year, but they have defined an era, that is unquestionable. On an individual level, over many years I have encountered lots of good players, at the moment, the ten handicap goal players are all incredible. It is a luxury to face such good players, and at the level of the Pieres siblings, Cambiaso, Juanma [ N e r o ] , Pablo [Mac Donough] Pelón Stirling, Hilario [Ulloa], etc. It is a real spectacle and a privilege. It is really great to play against them, they demand the maximum from you and raise the sporting level. Each day you have to improve to match up to the best players in the world and that is the appeal of competitiveness. Competing against the best in the world is what enables you to grow as a player. And the best teammate? I have been lucky to play with great teammates who are also opponents. Of course, Adolfito, Juanma, Hilario, the Novillo Astrada siblings and Memo Gracida. I have had lots of great teammates and I have been able to learn lots from them.

Tengo entendido que es un fanáticos el polo y que no descansa ni los días que no tiene partido o práctica. Soy fanático. Me gusta ver el máximo de partidos posibles, jugadores, caballos, todo. Estoy aquí y veo qué está pasando en California, Inglaterra y otros puntos. Me apasiona este deporte y trato de seguirlo, estar en contacto con compañeros, me gusta controlar todo lo que pasa en el mundo del polo.
I understand that you are a polo fanatic and don´t even rest on your days off. I am a fanatic. I like to see as many matches as possible, players, horses, everything. I am here and I watch what is happening in California, England and other areas. I am passionate about this sport and I try to follow it, remain in contact with colleagues, I like to keep an eye on everything that happens in the world of polo.
Por último, antes de acabar, ¿es cierto que el apodo se lo puso su padre? Sí, de pequeño. Él decía que siempre andaba jugando fuera de la casa con los sapitos y ya se quedó. En argentina los apodos es algo muy extendido y siempre con tintes cariñosos y afectivos.
Lastly, before ending, is it true that your father gave you the nickname? Yes, when I was young. He said I was always playing at home with the sapitos (toads) and it stuck. In Argentina nicknames are very widespread and always with affection and sentiment.
¿Y qué le gusta hacer cuando no está subido en el caballo? Me encanta el fútbol, soy apasionado y sigo a mi equipo, soy fanático de Boca aunque veo casi todas las ligas. No soy aficionado de ningún equipo europeo en concreto pero me atraen los conjuntos que juegan bien y por supuesto, por Messi, miro al Barcelona de una manera especial. También me encanta el golf, es un deporte con un importante componente mental, me divierte mucho y me ayuda a distraerme un poco. En Sotogrande no podrán quejarse de los campos que tienen [bromea].

And what do you like to do when you aren´t riding a horse? I love football, I am a devoted fan and I follow my team, I am fanatical about Boca. However, I also watch almost all the leagues. I am not a fan of any European side specifically but I am attracted by the sides that play well and of course, by Messi, I pay special attention to Barcelona. I also love golf, it is a sport with an important mental component, I have a lot of fun and it helps to distract me a little. In Sotogrande you can´t complain about the courses (jokes).

Comienza el 50 Aniversario Torneo Internacional de Polo en Sotogrande, cita obligada de todo fanático de este deporte. Para llegar con expectativas a este momento cúlmine de la temporada europea, el calendario internacional ha atravesado un 2021 realmente espectacular en cada rincón del planeta y que ha superado ampliamente lo que se esperaba. Los momentos inolvidables se han reproducido de un lado al otro, y el porvenir es aún más prometedor. Aunque también vale recordar la última foto que dejaba 2020: la despedida del cuarteto histórico de La Dolfina, el de Adolfo Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough y Juan Martín Nero, quedándose con su octavo título consecutivo en el Abierto Argentino, en Palermo.
El primer cuatrimestre del año fue, tal vez, uno de los más intensos del último tiempo. Dubai hace ya un tiempo se ha establecido como uno de los destinos de polo más dinámicos y competitivos. La Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series tuvo como primera parada a la IFZA Silver Cup, en la que Habtoor, la organización de Mohammed Al Habtoor se alzó con el certamen tras 7 años de espera. Luego, uno de los mejores equipos del año -independientemente del nivel de hándicap-, Ghantoot, se quedó de manera invicta con la IFZA Gold Cup y también con la HH President of UAE Polo Cup. Nasser Al Shamsi, Cacu Araya, César Crespo y Pablito Llorente jamás olvidarán este 2021, definitivamente.

Luego, Scone, del australiano David Paradice, comenzaría a demostrar su favoritismo, quedándose en primera instancia con la USPA Gold Cup y unas semanas más tarde con el plato más fuerte de la temporada: el US Open. Pakistán también supo cautivar al mundo del polo, con una histórica edición de su Abierto Nacional, que tuvo la participación de 10 equipos de 14 goles. Las expectativas para la temporada inglesa eran realmente altas: presentaba 12 equipos en el Prince of Wales Trophy, torneo que inaugura la temporada de 22 goles en el Reino Unido, y 15 para The Queen’s Cup. El conjunto de Thai Polo se quedó con el título en el Prince of Wales Trophy, mientras que por el lado de The Queen’s Cup, UAE Polo, con la Sheikha Maitha, se impuso a Scone y levantó la copa por primera vez en su historia. Al momento de escribir estas líneas, se definían las instancias finales del Abierto Británico. Italia también dio que hablar, tanto en Piazza di Siena, en Roma, como así también en Villa A Sesta Polo Club, en donde Mangroovy festejó en el Kings Polo Master.
Del otro lado del charco, en Francia, debutaba la Polo Rider Cup, un verdadero Mundial de Clubes, con 12 equipos de hasta 12 goles, de todo el mundo, que se daban cita en Chantilly. Polo Park Zurich y Deauville Int. Polo Club llegaron a la gran final de manera invicta, pero la formación suiza, con Martín Podestá (h) como hombre fundamental, demostró solidez y solvencia para inscribir su nombre en el ansiado trofeo. A pocos kilómetros de allí, en el glamoroso Polo de Paris, en plena capital francesa, La Concepción vencía a Sainte Mesme y se coronaba como el gran campeón del Open de Paris.

En Sotogrande se vive y disfruta del polo como en ningún otro lugar de la Europa continental. Pese a la complejidad de los últimos meses, a causa de la pandemia, de la mano y colaboración de los principales clubes de polo de la zona (Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, Ayala Polo Club y Santa María Polo Club), empresas de colaboradoras y medios de comunicación, como Grupo HCP, prácticamente durante todo el calendario se han estado disputando y contando al gran público la celebración de competiciones y torneos casi todos los fines de semana.
En su mayoría, con equipos y patrones locales pero capaces de competir con combinados hasta 12/14 goles de HCP en muchas de las ocasiones. No son todos los que están, ni están todos los que deberían, pero en este pequeño resumen, de la mano de POLO by La Bocha, hacemos un breve recorrido por las diferentes copas celebradas en la urbanización.
In Sotogrande polo is experienced and enjoyed like nowhere else in continental Europe. Despite the difficulty of recent months, due to the pandemic, alongside and in collaboration with the main polo clubs in the area (Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, Ayala Polo Club y Santa María Polo Club), companies of collaborators and media, such as Grupo HCP, during practically the entire year competitions and tournaments have been taking place almost every weekend and reported to the general public.
Mostly, with local teams and patrons, but capable of competing with teams of up to 12/14 HCP goals on many occasions. Not everyone is there, or everyone that there should be, but in this small summary, provided by POLO by La Bocha, we offer a brief review of the different cups held in the resort.

Iberian Polo Tour Invierno El cuarteto de PX (conjunto formado por: Xerxes Quijano, Juan Carlos Gavira, Pedro Beca y Pelayo Berazadi), se alzó con esta primera copa en disputa, el Memorial Duque de Alba, al superar en la jornada final, durante el encuentro decisivo al equipo de La Esperanza / Jolly Rogers (Niclas Johansson, Kevin Korst, Harry Muddle y Juancle Marambio), que finalizó cómo subcampeón del torneo. Horseware se impuso en la final a La Esperanza/Jolly Rogers que acaba como subcampeón. CR Pineda se impuso finalmente en la Final Subsidiaria de la Copa Finca Monasterio; mientras que el conjunto de Nalu Pulu, finalmente acabó en la última posición de la clasificación.
El último de estos trofeos, la Copa Sotoestates, dejó como campeón al conjunto de Horseware Ireland (Tom Mac Guinness, James Connely, Daniel Gariador y Patricio Neves); tras superar en la final a Nairobi (Karen Cariss, Grace Cariss, Hernán Pieres y Martín Iturraspe.
Iberian Winter Polo Tour An end to the year with lots of polo in Sotogrande. The facilities of Ayala Polo Club hosted the first of the three competitions that are part this year of the 2020 edition of the Iberian Polo Club. The PX team (formed by: Xerxes Quijano, Juan Carlos Gavira, Pedro Beca and Pelayo Berazadi), won the first cup that was up for grabs, the Duque de Alba Memorial, by winning on the final day, with a victory in the decisive clash against La Esperanza / Jolly Rogers (Niclas Johansson, Kevin Korst, Harry Muddle and Juancle Marambio), who finished as runners-up at the tournament. Horseware won in the final against La Esperanza/Jolly Rogers who finished as runners-up CR Pineda ultimately won in the Subsidiary Final of the Finca Monasterio Cup; while the Nalu Pulu side, ultimately finished in last place in the rankings.The last of these trophies, the Sotoestates Cup, left the Horseware Ireland side as champions (Tom Mac Guinness, James Connely, Daniel Gariador and Patricio Neves); after winning the final against Nairobi (Karen Cariss, Grace Cariss, Hernán Pieres and Martín Iturraspe).

La victoria fue para Green Gate Polo Team- Nalu Pulo. El cuarteto formado por: Abukhadra, Mario Gómez, Gelosi y Mellentín superó por 5,5 a 5 goles en el partido decisivo del torneo al conjunto de Alma Santa Polo Team (Castellvi, Faggionato, Pelayo Berazadi y M. López).
Domecq Memorial The Alma Santa Polo Team (formed by: Castellevi, Faggionato, M. López and Pelayo Berazadi), took victory on Easter Sunday by winning the final 8 goals to 6, against the Horseware side (formed by: Macguinnes, Power, Neves and Daniel Gariador), runner-up of the event.
Conde de Guaqui

Las extraordinarias instalaciones de Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo acogen el segundo de los trofeos de primavera del Iberian Polo Tour, la Copa Black Hound. En el duelo definitivo del domingo, el conjunto de Nairobi Polo Team. PX/Almasanta consigue el triunfo en el tercer y último trofeo de la temporada de primavera del Iberian Polo Tour (Copa Strabrock), disputada en las instalaciones de Ayala Polo Club.

El Gran Palacio, Wat Pho, Wat Arun o el Buda Esmeralda son algunos de los puntos claves para conocer la cultura y el Bangkok más emocional y espiritual. Un contrapunto perfecto, en relación a la animación y bullicio de sus calles y mercados (como el de Damnoen Saduak): Khaosan, Chatuchak o el impresionante Mahanankhon Skywalk (con más de 314 metros de alturas), conseguirán hacer descubrir al inquieto el Bangkok más urbano y característico. El impresionante buda entre raíces (Wat Mahathat) o el Wat Chaiwatthanaram, harán inolvidable esta visita. Los templos Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Umong o Wat Pha Lat. Su vecina Chiang Rai es otro de los destinos que enamora y cautiva a todo visitante. Un entorno selvático y templos fabulosos convertirán en un recuerdo imborrable un paseo entres sus columnas de piedra. El increíble templo blanco, obra de Charlemchai Kositpipat, incluso el templo azul, son dos objetivos incuestionables en el libro de ruta. Pero también debe haber tiempo, en una vista a Tailandia, para disfrutar de sus paradisiacas playas y rincones increíbles en los que empaparse de mar y sol. En la costa Este, visitar Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Samui y Koh Tao, prácticamente cambiarán cualquier concepto anterior sobre playas y baños cuando uno se sumerge en el golfo tailandés. The Koh Phi Phi islands are another of the most visited places in the country, where authentic gems such as Ao Nang, Railay or Long Beach in Koh Phi Phi Don stand out predominantly. Como parte del proyecto hotelero SO/ Sotogrande, también ha renovado el campo de golf Almenara para hacerlo mucho más cómodo para los jugadores. Se han llevado a cabo toda una serie de cambios como la eliminación de unos 20 búnkeres y la poda de los árboles del campo para dar la sensación de que las calles son más amplias. El hoyo 1 del campo de Los Pinos tenía una caída muy pronunciada a la izquierda, algo que se ha modificado para hacer que sea más plano y más cómodo para el jugador. En los hoyos 3 y 4 se han modificado los tees y en el hoyo 5 se han modificado dos búnkeres largos. El equipo ha tomado nota de todos los comentarios de los jugadores recibidos a lo largo de los años y ha trabajado para mejorar el campo en todas las áreas. Además, el personal está impaciente por conocer la opinión de los jugadores habituales sobre las mejoras cuando el campo vuelva a abrirse a finales de julio.
As part of the SO/ Sotogrande hotel project, the Almenara Golf Course has also had a makeover to make it much more player-friendly. A whole raft of changes have been made, including the removal of approximately 20 bunkers and pruning the trees on the course to give the feeling of wider and more generous fairways. Hole 1 of the Los Pinos course had a very steep drop to the left, this has been altered to make this hole flatter and more player-friendly. Holes 3 and 4 have had the tees modified and hole 5 has had alterations to two long bunkers. The team has taken note of all the player feedback they have received over the years and have worked to improve it in all areas and they can’t wait to hear what regular players think of the improvements when the course reopens at the end of July.

Muy buenas Alejandro, encantado de tenerte en nuestras páginas. Sevillano de procedencia, afincado en Marbella y con cuadra en Dos Lunas. Cuéntanos un poco cómo nace esa pasión por el mundo de los caballos. Comienza de muy pequeño y por casualidad, como las mejores cosas que ocurren en la vida. Es cierto que a través de un familiar, que gestionaba una cuadra de enganches, el caballo guardaba una cierta relación con mi entorno pero no de manera directa. Mi padre, que no estaba en absoluto vinculado entonces al mundo ecuestre, por circunstancias y algunas casualidades acabó haciéndose con un caballo junto al que crecí y su presencia, indudablemente, supuso un fuerte impulso para que despertase en mí esa inquietud y esta pasión.
¿Cómo fueron los comienzos? Cerca de casa, como el de todos. Soy natural de La Campana, un pueblecito de Sevilla al que llevo por bandera y del que presumo cada vez que tengo ocasión. Muy cerca se encuentra una de las ganaderías más famosas en el mundo del toro, Miura, y en la que de manera tradicional se practica con asiduidad el acoso y derribo o la Doma Vaquera, algo muy característico y común en la cultura andaluza y especialmente de esa zona. En esa época y en ese contexto, era muy complicado encontrar a mi alrededor gente relacionada con la Doma Clásica. Pero a medida que iba investigando más, con vídeos y revistas especializadas, cada vez que iba descubriendo más esa posibilidad, esa otra alternativa de entender la relación con el caballo, me di cuenta que la Doma Clásica tenía algo especial, algo que me llamaba la atención y se convirtió en máxima aspiración. Quería conseguir ejecutar esos movimientos, ese dominio, ese control y armonía total con el caballo y a ello dediqué todos mis esfuerzos. ➢

Hi Alejandro, delighted to have you among our pages. Originally from Seville, residing in Marbella and with a stable at Dos Lunas. Tell us a little about how that passion for the world of horses emerged. It began a very young age and by coincidence, like the best things that happen in life. It is true that through a family member, who managed a stables, horses had a certain relationship with my environment but not directly. My father, who then had absolutely no links to the equestrian world, due to circumstances and some coincidences ended up getting a horse that I grew up with and its presence was undoubtedly a big boost to awaken that interest and passion in me.
How were your beginnings? Close to home, like everyone. I am a native of La Campana, a little town in Seville that I fly the flag for and that I boast about any time I get the chance. Very nearby is one of the most famous livestock farms in the world of bulls, Miura, where traditionally Doma Vaquera is practiced, something that is very characteristic and common in Andalusian culture and particularly in that area. At that time and in that context, it was very difficult to find people around me linked to Classical Dressage. However, as I investigated more, with videos and specialised magazines, as I gradually discovered that possibility, that other alternative of understanding the relationship with horses, I realised that Classical Dressage had something special, something that appealed to me and that became my primary aspiration. I wanted to be able to execute those movements, that mastery, that control and total harmony with horses, and I dedicated all my efforts to it.
➢ ¿Y para llegar a la alta competición? Los primeros pasos consitieron en dar clases con un jinete profesional y adentrarme en la Doma Clásica. En los inicios intercambiaba clases por trabajo y eso me permitió ir adquiriendo, dentro mis posibilidades, nociones y conocimientos técnicos que luego pude ir desarrollando. Siempre con mucho esfuerzo y trabajo; la Doma Clásica este es un deporte muy exclusivo y al principio, la búsqueda de recursos se convierte en la máxima prioridad. Pero poco a poco comienzo a competir con mi caballo Dalio, por cierto muy tarde, y al segundo concurso que acudimos, el Campeonato de Andalucía, resulta que lo ganamos. Poco después nos plantamos en un Concurso Internacional y repetimos triunfo y comenzamos a cobrar cierta relevancia y protagonismo. Algo que siempre me enorgullece recordar ya que de todos aquellos concursos, entre los que destaca un subcampeonato del mundo, fueron los pilares para construir todo lo que tengo hoy: una de las cuadras más importantes del mundo y la capacidad de ser competitivos en las citas más relevantes del panorama internacional. Por eso me gusta siempre recordar que todo es gracias a esa conjunción que nació con Dalio, un caballo que prácticamente estaba defenestrado y sin un ojo. Una historia increíble. ➢
And in order to reach elite competition? The first steps were to take classes with a professional rider and delve into Classical Dressage. At the start, I exchanged classes for work and that enabled me to gradually acquire, within my possibilities, the basics and technical knowledge that I could then develop. Always with lots of effort and work; Classical Dressage is a very exclusive sport and at the beginning, the pursuit of resources becomes the maximum priority. However, gradually I began to compete with my horse Dalio, very late by the way, and we ended up winning the second competition we went to, the Andalusian Championship. Shortly after, we entered an International Competition and we won again and began to acquire a certain importance and central role. It is something I am always proud to remember as of all the competitions, notably including a second place in the world, those were the pillars to build everything that I have today: one of the most important stables in the world and the ability to be competitive at the most important events on the international scene. Therefore, I always like to remember that everything is thanks to that conjunction that emerged with Dalio, a horse that was practically ruined and lacking an eye. An incredible story.

➢ ¿Qué significa para ti Dalio?
Todo. Es mi caballo estrella, uno más de mi familia. Juntos hemos conseguido todo lo que tengo en mi carrera. Mejor dicho, gracias a él.
¿Y Vivino? Es una estrella que he incorporado a mi cuadra hace poco más de un mes. Es un caballo muy especial, muy completo, y tiene el potencial de convertirse en uno de los 4/5 mejores caballos del mundo en su edad en todo el mundo [5 años] aunque ahora tiene que demostrarlo. Es un proyecto muy atractivo al que voy a dedicar todos mis esfuerzos. Es un espectacular semental danés. ¿Cómo es la exigencia y el día a día para un jinete de alto nivel? Soy un competidor nato. Soy un hombre de caballos pero mi pasión es montar y competir. Tengo muy claro lo que quiero, me gusta rodearme de lo mejor y pretendo convertirme en el número uno. Quiero ser competitivo en Juegos Olímpicos, en Campeonatos del Mundo y conseguir reunir la mejor cuadra del mundo. Sé que voy por el camino correcto pero hay que continuar trabajado y exige una dedicación total y sacrificio. Aquí no hay vacaciones, fines de semana, horarios o días de descanso. Es una labor constante de mantenimiento, cuidado, entrenamiento y disciplina. Pero afortunadamente es mi pasión, no lo tomo con un trabajo. De otra manera sería imposible. ➢
What does Dalio mean to you? Everything. He is my star horse, another part of my family. Together, we achieved everything that I have in my career. In other words, thanks to him.
And Vivino? He is a star that I added to my stable a little over a month ago. He is a very special horse, very complete, and he has the potential to become one of the 4/5 best horses in the world at his age worldwide (5 years) although now he needs to demonstrate it. It is a very attractive project that I am going to devote all my efforts to and on a daily basis. He is a spectacular Danish stud. How are the demands and daily life for an elite level rider? I am a born competitor. I am a horse man but by passion is riding and competing. I am very clear about what I want, I like to surround myself with the best and I am to become the number one. I want to be competitive at the Olympic Games, at the World Championships and manage to assemble the best stable in the world. I know that I am on the right path but it is necessary to continue working and it requires total dedication and sacrifice. There are no holidays, weekends, timetables or rest days here. It is constant work with maintenance, care, training and discipline. However, fortunately it is my passion, I don´t view it as a job. Otherwise it would be impossible.

➢ ¿Cómo es la preparación de un caballo de primera línea? Es diario pero la pieza más importante, la clave, es contar con un gran equipo que respalde y cuide todo esa labor. Es indispensable tener una exhaustiva organización y planificación de trabajo porque la exigencia es máxima. Disponemos de un fantástico equipo, de casi diez personas de manera indirecta, formado por: fisios, cuidadores, veterinarios, herradores, etc. Todo lo que sea necesario y además deben trabajar perfectamente coordinados, es la única manera de que todo salga bien y evitar problemas, lesiones o errores en la planificación. ¿Respecto a lo que concierne al caballo en sí? La rutina de entrenamiento es como la de cualquier otro pero un caballo así es todavía más exigente. Su programa abarca los siete días de la semana con varias salidas de la cuadra. Antes de montar tiene que salir a pasear, luego el entrenamiento, por la tarde ‘aqua training’ y otra vez paseo de la mano. Cada día de la semana tiene una rutina diferente: recuperación, mantenimiento, pista, etc. Todo ello depende del momento de la temporada, del calendario de competiciones y de su estado físico, obviamente. ➢

How is the preparation of an elite horse? It is daily but the most important aspect, the key, is to have a great team that backs and cares for all that work. It is essential to have rigorous organisation and planning of work because the demands are maximum. We have a fantastic team, almost ten people indirectly, formed by: physios, carers, vets, farriers, etc. Everything necessary and also they must work in perfect coordination, it is the only way to ensure that everything goes well and avoid problems, injuries or errors in planning. With regard to what concerns the horse in itself? The training routine is like any another but a horse like that is even more demanding. The programme encompasses the seven days of the week with several outings from the stable. Before riding, it is necessary to take the horse for a walk, then training, aqua training in the afternoon, and then another walk by the hand. Each day of the week has a different routine: recovery, maintenance, arena, etc. Everything depends on the time of the season, the competition schedule and the horse´s physical condition, obviously.

➢ Estamos en un lugar increíble como es Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, ¿cómo nace ese vínculo? Llevo cuatro años instalado aquí y es un sitio maravilloso. Me encanta disfrutar y estar con mis caballos en un sitio tranquilo y con las mejores condiciones e instalaciones posibles, eso ayuda a evitar lesiones y conseguir el mejor rendimiento de una cuadra. Dos Lunas dispone con diferencia de las mejores instalaciones de Andalucía y probablemente será uno de los escenarios más privilegiados del sur de Europa para el caballo. Tengo una magnífica relación con Anunciada Torras y mi intención es continuar aquí todo el tiempo que sea necesario. Es un lugar fantástico. ¿De qué manera ha afectado la pandemia al mundo de la hípica? A nivel de competiciones ha pasado factura pero creo que se está recuperando aún mejor, de manera exponencial. Noto más movimiento de caballos, un crecimiento de competiciones, en definitiva, hay muchas más ganas bajo mi impresión. Si bien dimos un paso atrás en 2020, noto que ahora se están dando diez en positivo. Se plantea a corto plazo un escenario más que interesante.
Viaja por medio mundo, ¿qué tal en Emiratos? Doha ha sido uno de mis últimos destinos, por segundo año, en su Copa del Mundo. La experiencia es siempre fantástica. Me tratan genial y el estadio es impresionante. Es un lugar al que si se puede ir, hay que vivirlo, al menos, una vez en la vida.
¿Ocupa la Doma en España el lugar que merece? ¿Se valora lo suficiente? No. En España hay jinetes muy buenos, de los mejores del mundo, y no conseguimos sacar provecho de ello. No tienen la visibilidad a nivel deportivo y social que merecerían. Hemos consolidad la fama de tener y criar buenos caballos españoles pero no así en las competiciones y la realidad es contraria. Aunque ahora parece que está cambiando ese escenario. ¿Y en Sotogrande? Totalmente lo contrario, aquí casi todo el mundo entiende de caballos. Si necesitas, por poner un ejemplo, un trabajador es de los lugares más fáciles del mundo para encontrar gente. Muchas personas han tratado con caballos, han trabajado con ellos o han estado vinculadas de algún modo al polo o a la Doma. Es un impulso en la zona para la generación de empelo y eso es importante.
¿Redes Sociales? Sí, por supuesto, forma parte de nuestra vida profesional y personal. Tengo redes, las gestiono yo mismo, me gustan y las uso con frecuencia. Son una herramienta extraordinaria, si se usan correctamente. Intento contar cómo es mi día a día, mis sensaciones durante las competiciones y por supuesto, dar a conocer mi cuadra y presentar a mis nuevos caballos. En definitiva, son sementales y darlos a conocer es una clave imprescindible para poder dedicarnos a esta profesión. ¿Alguna vez ha probado con el polo o en casa del herrero…? Sí, si lo he probado [ríe]. He jugado y me divierte mucho aunque reconozco que es complicado. Eso mejor dejárselo a los profesionales que por aquí hay muchos y muy buenos. ●
We are in an incredible place, Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, how did that link arise? I have been here for four years and it is a wonderful place. I love to enjoy myself and be with my horses in a peaceful place and with the best possible conditions and facilities, that helps to avoid injuries and to achieve the best performance from a stable. By far, Dos Lunas has the best facilities in Andalusia and it is probably one of the most privileged settings in southern Europe for horses. I have a magnificent relationship with Anunciada Torres and my aim is to continue here for as long as necessary. It is a fantastic place.
How has the pandemic affected the equestrian world? In terms of competitions it has had an impact, but I think that it is recovering even better, exponentially. I note more movement with horses, a growth in competitions, ultimately, I think there is lots more enthusiasm. Although we took a step back in 2020, I can see we are now taking ten positive steps forward. A more interesting scenario is emerging in the short term. You have travelled around the world, what about in the Emirates? Doha was one of my last destinations, for the second consecutive year, at its World Cup. The experience is always fantastic. The treat me brilliantly and the stadium is impressive. It is a place that if you can go, you should experience it at least once in life.
Does Dressage in Spain occupy the place it deserves? Is it valued sufficiently? No. In Spain there are very good riders, some of the best in the world, and we haven´t managed to take advantage of that. They don´t have the sporting and social visibility they deserve. We have consolidated the reputation of having and breeding good Spanish horses but not in competitions and the reality is the opposite. However, now it seems that scenario is changing. And in Sotogrande? The complete opposite, here almost everyone knows about horses. For example, if you need a worker it is one of the easiest places in the world to find people. Many people have dealt with horses, have worked with them or have been linked in some way to polo or Dressage. It is a boost in the area for creating employment and that is important.
Social Networks? Yes, of course, they form part of our professional and personal life. I have networks, I manage them myself, I like them and I use them often. They are an extraordinary tool, if used correctly. I try to report my day to day life, my feelings during competitions and of course, promote my stable and present my new horses. Ultimately, they are studs and promoting them is an essential key to being able to devote ourselves to this profession. Have you ever tried polo or would you not apply your skills there...? Yes, I have tried it (laugh). I have played and it is very fun although I admit it is difficult. It is better to leave it to the professionals, and there are lots and very good ones here.●

El polo se puede disfrutar de muchas maneras y así se lleva haciendo décadas a lo largo de todo el mundo pero ¿por qué no diseñar fuera de clasicismos una versión más desenfadada y divertida? En pleno Galle (Sri Lanka), isla situada al sur de India, llevan años con esta curiosa disciplina de polo que sustituye a una antigua práctica con elefantes. Desde 2013 comenzaron a disputarse estos torneos de Tuk Tuk Polo, organizados por el Club de Polo Ceylon, y se han convertido en un reclamo de la zona, como distintivo, en los últimos años. Estos vehículos tan particulares, con tres ruedas y que habitualmente hacen las funciones de “mototaxis”, son los empleados para disfrutar de la práctica del Tuk Tuk Polo (simulando la labor habitual del caballo). Polo can be enjoyed in many years and this has been the case for decades all over the world but, why not design a more relaxed and fun version outside of the classic forms? In the heart of Galle (Sri Lanka), an island located to the south of India, for years they have had this strange polo discipline that replaces an ancient practice with elephants. Since 2013, they began to hold these Tuk Tuk Polo tournaments, organised by Ceylon Polo Club, and they have become an attraction in the area, as a hallmark, over recent years.
This very particular vehicles, with three wheels that normally serve as “motor taxis”, are used to enjoy the practice of Tuk Tuk Polo (simulating the normal work of the horse). La trufa blanca de Alba, de origen italiano, es una de las más silvestres y exóticas que existen; ya que se considera uno de los 10 ingredientes más caros de todo el planeta. Es la idóneo para combinaciones con pasta recién cocida, langosta o filete mignon y suele utilizarse mejor cruda.
Otra de las más exclusivas variantes es la trufa blanca italiana. Este sueño, hoy toda una realidad con mayúsculas, vio la luz en plena mitad de Siglo XIX, concretamente en el año 1858, de la mano de D. Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga. Una origen que aúna aquellos viñedos junto a la primitiva bodega proyectada por Ricardo Bellsola.
Sólo unos años más tarde, concretamente en 1862, Marqués de Riscal se convertiría en el vino embotellado más antiguo de Rioja, con el envasado de sus primeros vinos que en menos de lustro comenzarían a recibir premios de todo tipo. Incluso apostado poco tiempo después por la primera ampliación de la bodega, en 1883, con la construcción del edificio conocido como ‘El Palomar’. ➢

This dream, now a major reality, came to fruition midway through the 19th century, specifically in 1858, with Don Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga. An origin that combines the vineyards along with the initial winery designed by Ricardo Bellsola.
Just a few years later, specifically in 1862, Marqués de Riscal became the oldest bottled wine in Rioja, with the packaging of its first wines which in less than five years would begin to receive all kinds of prizes. Antes de acabar el Siglo XIX, aún tendría la bodega otra grata noticia. En 1895 se convertiría Marqués de Riscal en el primer vino no francés en conseguir el Diploma de Honor de la Exposición de Burdeos; un galardón y distintivo que se añade a la etiqueta del vino en cada botella y que puede apreciarse. Con el estreno de la nueva centuria, en el primer cuarto de siglo, Marqués de Riscal incorpora a su diseño la distintiva malla dorada en cada una de sus botellas, un emblema y símbolo que permitiría aparecer como sello de garantía y calidad frente a falsificaciones. Ya que era común en al época rellenar botellas y reutilizarlas, en alguna que otra ocasión se quiso dar “gato por liebre”, fruto de la clásica picaresca tradicional. Este malla permitía asegurar la exclusividad y autenticidad de cada unidad a los comparadores. Es ya al inicio de los años 70 cuando alcanza uno de los picos más altos de expansión con la ampliación en la selección de vinos de primera calidad. Marqués de Riscal comienza a producir en 1972 los primeros vinos blancos de Rueda y dos años más tarde introduce la variedad francesa en la zona de Sauvignon Blanc. E incluso, al inicio de la década de los ochenta se convertiría en una de as grandes bodegas impulsoras de la Denominación de Origen Rueda. Destacar también que el Barón de Chirel, precursor y promotor de los vinos de nueva era de Rioja, comenzaría producirse en 1986. ➢
Before ending the 19th century, the winery would have more good news. In 1895 Marqués de Riscal became the first non-French wine to achieve the Diploma of Honour of the Bordeaux Exhibition; an award and distinction that is added to each bottle of wine and that can be appreciated. With the arrival of the new century, in the first quarter of a century, Marqués de Riscal added the distinctive gold mesh to each of its bottles, an emblem and symbol that serves as a seal of guarantee and quality against falsifications. As at the time it was common to refill bottles and re-use them, sometimes the aim was to mislead people, a result of the classic picaresque tradition. This mesh made it possible to ensure the exclusivity and authenticity of each unit for the buyers.
It was the start of the 70´s when the wine reached one of the highest peaks in the expansion ad broadening of the selection of top-quality wines. In 1972, Marqués de Riscal began to produce the first white Rueda wines and two years later it introduced the French variety in the Sauvignon Blanc zone. And even, at the start of the eighties, it became one of the major wineries that was a driving force behind the Rueda Denomination of Origin. It is also worth highlighting that Barón de Chirel, the precursor and promotor of new era Rioja wines, began to be produced in 1986. ➢ ➢

➢ El nuevo siglo y el nuevo milenio comenzó a lo grande para la bodega, con el inicio del Proyecto 2000 que supondría el gran salto para Marqués de Riscal de cara al futuro. Arrancaría el proceso de construcción de la bodega San Vicente y el inicio de las visitas turísticas, el nacimiento por decirlo así, de ese enoturismo de alta calidad en España.
Poco después, en el año 2006, se inaugura la extraordinaria obra de Frank O. Ghery: La Ciudad del Vino. ubicada en Elciego (Álava). Este increíble espacio ofrece al visitante la experiencia de recorrer la historia de la bodega desde su fundación en 1858 hasta nuestros días, con la posibilidad de disfrutar del vino a través de los cinco sentidos. Para adentrarse en este recorrido histórico, el visitante puede acercarse hasta el corazón de este complejo, la Plaza del Reloj. Desde allí, se puede ver ver la Bodega Original que fue construida en 1860 y que en su interior alberga uno de los tesoros de Marqués de Riscal, la Botellería de vinos antiguos. A continuación, también puede visitarse El Palomar, dónde se elaboran los vinos premium de la compañía.
Y por último, frente a la tradición que muestran los diferentes edificios de piedra arenisca, se ubica la vanguardia del siglo XXI, el Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, diseñado también por el reconocido arquitecto canadiense. La parte más sensorial se completa con el Spa de vinoterapia de Caudalie y la oferta gastronómica que cuenta con el asesoramiento del chef riojano, Francis Paniego. Un lugar extraordinario, de obligada visita y en el que conocer la gran trayectoria de una de las bodegas más importantes del vino, presente en más de 110 países de todo el mundo y que exporta cerca del 65% de su producción. ●
The new century and the new millennium began in style for the winery, with the start of Project 2000 which marked a big leap up for Marqués de Riscal ahead of the future. The construction process of the San Vicente winery and the start of tourist visits got underway, this marked the birth of high quality wine tourism in Spain.
Soon afterwards, in 2006, the extraordinary work by Frank O. Ghery was opened: The City of Wine, located in Elciego (Álava). This incredible space offers visitors the experience of travelling through the history of the wine, from its establishment in 1858 until the present, with the chance to enjoy wine through the five senses. To delve into this historic journey, visitors can travel to the heart of this complex, Plaza del Reloj. From there, it is possible to see the Original Winery which was built in 1860 and inside it houses one of the treasures of Marqués de Riscal, the wine cellar of old wines. Then, it is also possible to visit El Palomar, where the company´s premium wines are produced.
And lastly, in contract to the tradition displayed by the different buildings of sandstone, stands the modernity of the 21st century, the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, also designed by the renowned Canadian architect. The most sensory part is completed with the Caudalie wine therapy Spa and the gastronomic offer which receives advice from the Rioja chef, Francis Paniego. Alcanzamos la 50 edición del Torneo Internacional de Polo en Sotogrande y es ocasión para que lo celebramos con especial motivo de satisfacción. No es fácil que un torneo de estas características alcance tantas ediciones y por ello debemos reconocer sin ambages el trabajo de aquellos que se empeñaron en que Sotogrande tuviese una competición internacional de este elevado nivel. Motivado por ello, durante el verano de 2020, mi padre –Íñigo Zobelfue gestando la idea de llevar adelante el hacer algo importante de cara a la efeméride que se celebraría en este 2021. Desde entonces su idea primordial se concentraba en dos aspectos fundamentales y básicos sobre los que sustentar esta celebración: conseguir una unidad de implicación por parte de los clubes de la zona y lograr un relanzamiento del polo en Sotogrande recuperando el alto hándicap con la presencia de la primeras figuras mundiales de este deporte. Ese fue el reto que mi padre nos lanzó a mí y a mi marido –Santiago Laborde- y que con gran responsabilidad asumimos desde el primer momento. Llevar a buen término este desafío no ha resultado fácil, son muchos aspectos a contemplar para conseguir la mejor organización posible y máxime cuando realmente la concertación de las voluntades de las partes implicadas –Ayala Polo Club, Santa María Polo Club y Club de Polo Dos Lunas- no se alcanzó hasta finales de abril pasado.
Desde entonces, en apenas dos meses desde Ayala Polo Club – con el inestimable apoyo de Minuto 7 en la gestión del aspecto deportivo- hemos realizado un titánico esfuerzo a nivel económico y un extraordinario despliegue humano imponiéndonos un ritmo frenético para alcanzar una perfecta puesta a punto de cada detalle, por insignificante que fuese. Desde aquí, mi agradecimiento personal para todos cuantos han participado y participan para que este sueño se haya podido convertir en una auténtica realidad.
Creo que estamos en la vía correcta para conseguir el objetivo fijado y esperamos que la celebración de este 50 Aniversario sea el punto de inflexión que requería el polo en Sotogrande; a partir de ahora, con los próximos proyectos que ya se vienen planteando y con la extraordinaria perspectiva que se aventura para años venideros se nos garantizarán unas magníficas temporadas de polo de primerísimo nivel mundial, recuperando e incrementando el brillo de épocas pasadas. Espero estar y seguir estando a la altura del reto que me lanzó mi padre y estoy convencida de que mi abuelo, Enrique Zobel, pionero del polo en Sotogrande, seguro que se sentiría tremendamente orgulloso al ver que su insaciable impulso inicial se perpetúa en esta generación a la que nos corresponde afrontar estos nuevos tiempos de polo; confío en que podamos conducirlo durante otros 50 años más de esplendor. ● 112 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / opinión
We have reached the 50th edition of the International Polo Tournament in Sotogrande and it is an occasion for us to celebrate it with a special satisfaction. It isn´t easy for a tournament of these characteristics to reach so many editions and therefore we should unreservedly acknowledge the work of those who worked so hard for Sotogrande to have an international competition of this high level.
As a consequence, during the summer of 2020, my father -Íñigo Zobelthought up the idea of going ahead with doing something important for the special occasion to be celebrated in 2021. Since then, his initial idea focused on two crucial and basic aspects on which to base this celebration; achieving unity in the involvement of the clubs in the area and managing to relaunch polo in Sotogrande by recovering the high handicap category with the presence of the leading global figures from this sport. That was the challenge that my father posed to me and my husband -Santiago Laborde- and we undertook it with great responsibility from the outset. Successfully carrying out this challenge has not been easy, there are many aspects to consider to achieve the best possible organisation, and especially when the agreement of the wishes of the parties involved – Ayala Polo Club, Santa María Polo Club and Club de Polo Dos Lunas- was not obtained until the end of last April.
Since then, in barely two months, at Ayala Polo Club -with the incalculable support of Minuto 7 to manage the sport- we have made a titanic effort on an economic level and an extraordinary human rollout imposing a frenetic pace on ourselves to attain perfect fine tuning of every detail, no matter how insignificant. From here, my personal thanks go to everyone who participated and is participating to ensure that this dream has become a true reality. I believe that we are on the right path to achieving the goal set and we hope that the celebration of this 50th Anniversary is the turning point that polo required in Sotogrande; from now on, with the upcoming projects that are being considered and with the extraordinary prospects for the coming years, we will be guaranteed magnificent seasons of the finest global polo, recovering and increasing the sheen of past eras.
I hope to be up to and remain up to the challenge that my father set and I am convinced that my grandfather, Enrique Zobel, the pioneer of polo in Sotogrande, would certainly feel extremely proud to see that his insatiable initial momentum is continued in this generation that must tackle these new times of polo; I am confident that we can guide it for another 50 years of splendour. ●
