“Algunos de los mejores recuerdos de mi vida están en Sotogrande”

Pascual Sainz de Vicuña aterriza una temporada más en Sotogrande, con el equipo Dos Lunas, tras vivir una las campañas más exitosas de su carrera deportiva con la clasificación, el pasado curso, para el Abierto Argentino de Polo con La Esquina. Conocemos un poco más a uno de los polistas españoles de referencia y con una gran vinculación personal y deportiva con la urbanización.

Querido Pascual, un placer abrir la temporada 2023 contigo. Toda una vida vinculado al mundo del caballo. ¿Cómo te iniciaste? Esa pasión familiar por los caballos tuvo que influir…

Absolutamente. Desde mis primeros recuerdos, el caballo siempre ha estado muy presente en mi vida y por supuesto, con una influencia muy importante en la figura de mi madre [Anunciada Torras]. Recuerdo salir del colegio e inmediatamente acompañarla a ver sus caballos, que por aquella

época los tenía todavía Madrid. A esa edad, en mi caso, me gustaban pero no de una manera especial; disfrutaba con varios deportes. Me encantaba jugar a fútbol y pádel con amigos, practicaba otros deportes y no estaba tan centrado en el caballo y aún menos en el polo. Fue a partir de los 14/15 años, cuando comencé a ir a Argentina, tengo familia paterna allá y además jugaban al polo. Allí empecé a probar, a taquear y además me hice un grupo de amigos argentinos de mi edad que jugaban, eso es clave para apasionarte en algo.

Pascual Sainz de Vicuña is arriving for another season in Sotogrande, with the Dos Lunas team, after experiencing one of the most successful campaigns of his sporting career with qualification, last year, for the Argentine Polo Open with La Esquina. We got to know one of the leading Spanish polo players a little better and someone with great personal and sporting links to the resort.

Dear Pascual, it is a pleasure to open the 2023 season with you. An entire life linked to the equestrian world. How did you get started? That family passion for horses must have had an influence...

Absolutely. Since my earliest memories, horses have always been very present in my life and of course, with a very important influence in the figure of my mother (Anunciada Torras). I remember leaving school and immediately accompanying her to see her horses, which at that time she still had in Madrid. At that age, in my case, I liked them but not particularly; I enjoyed several sports. I loved to play football and padel with friends, I

played other sports, and I wasn’t so focused on horses and even less so on polo. It was from the age of 14/15, when I began going to Argentina, I have paternal family there and they also played polo. I began trying it there, hitting and I also made a group of Argentine friends my age who played, that is essential to become passionate about something. They also came to Sotogrande in summer and as I played, having fun and improving, I ended up falling in love with polo and even more so with horses. Once you discover that incredible world, that connection, the time that you devote to horses, it ends up forming part of your life in a very special way. You realise that you devote 80/90% of time to horses.

“Some of the best memories of my life are in Sotogrande”

Ellos también venían a Sotogrande en verano y conforme iba jugando, divirtiéndome y mejorando, acabé apasionándome por el polo y aún más por el caballo. Una vez que descubres ese increíble mundo, esa conexión, el tiempo que le dedicas a los caballos, acaba por formar parte de tu vida de una manera muy especial. Date cuenta que el 80/90% del tiempo se lo dedicas a los caballos.

Desde muy jovencito te convertiste en toda una referencia del polo español, ¿cómo fue tu evolución y formación como jugador?

Al principio, como tantas otras cosas, comienza como un juego. No te preocupas, te diviertes, sales a jugar y ya está. Pero a medida que tu carrera va creciendo, entras en contacto con gente de este mundo, compartes equipo y compites con grandes jugadores y ‘coaches’ , vas adquiriendo un conocimiento y un aprendizaje vital a la hora de formar una carrera de polista profesional. De todos ellos vas sacando ideas, conceptos y dinámicas de trabajo y entrenamiento que te ayudan a encontrar tu mejor versión y la de los caballos. Por eso ocasiones se dice que los hijos de polistas, tienen el camino un poco más corto, porque van creciendo mientras escuchan toda esa destreza y aprendizaje. Pero he tenido mucha suerte de conocer a gente muy buena y de ir creciendo y mejorando en todos los aspectos de mi juego y la cría.

La temporada pasada será complicado que la olvides. Esa gran clasificación para el Abierto Argentino de Polo con La Esquina en la Copa Remonta y Veterinaria. ¿Cómo viviste aquella victoria sobre Alegría en la catedral?

Fue una de mis mayores alegrías deportivas, nunca mejor dicho. Se conjugó todo, incluso un detalle que no olvidaré, un escenario único. Justo querían probar la cancha I de Palermo y fue con nuestro partido, la cancha estaba como a estrenar y nos hizo un hizo un día espectacular. Además nos salió el mejor partido la temporada, ganamos bien y lo recuerdo como el día más feliz a nivel deportivo y polo. Me alegré mucho por todos, por el equipo y ese gran trabajo, nos llevamos todos muy bien. Nada más acabar nos fuimos a la caballeriza, preparamos un asado y un festejo increíble. Y casi sin tiempo para pestañear, a la mañana siguiente ya estábamos con la sesión de fotos para el Abierto, preparando los caballos y días más tarde jugando contra La Dolfina. Fue impresionante.

En los últimos años, has logrado clasificar dos veces en Palermo. ¿Cómo de diferente es la exigencia respecto al resto de competiciones?

El listón es muy alto. Este año, la realidad es que lo he podido disfrutar, el primer año quizás pagué algo de inexperiencia o la falta de una preparación más exhaustiva. Pero el pasado año disfruté muchísimo con todo, con los partidos, las prácticas, el ambiente, algo inolvidable. Pero como dices, es todo muy exigente, tienes que estar muy preparado y muy bien montado y aún así, cuando llegas al Abierto, te das cuenta que los grandes van a estar aún más preparados y mejor montados. Por otro lado, el ritmo de juego es impresionante, juegas partidos de ocho chukkers y eso es muy exigente, tanto para el jugador como para los caballos. En Argentina necesitas al menos una lista con 14 yeguas para saltar a la cancha. No puedes dejar ni un segundo de tregua.

“He tenido la suerte de conocer a gente muy buena, con la que seguir creciendo y mejorando”

From a very early age you became a real benchmark in Spanish polo, how was your evolution and training as a player?

To begin with, like so many other things, it began as a game. You don’t worry, you have fun, you go out to play and that’s all/ But as your career gradually grows, you come into contact with people from this world, you share a team and compete with great players and coaches, you acquire knowledge and vital lessons in terms of forming a career as a professional polo player. You get ideas, concepts and work and training dynamics from all of them which help you to find your best version and that of the horses. Therefore, it is sometimes said that the path is a little shorter for the children of polo players, because they grow up while listening to all that skill and learning. However, I have been very lucky to meet very good people and to grow and improve on all aspects of my game and breeding.

It will be difficult for you to forget last season. That great qualification for the Argentine Polo Open with La Esquina in the Remonta y Veterinaria Cup. How did you experience that victory over Alegría in the cathedral of polo?

It was one of greatest sporting joys (alegrías), never better said. Everything came together, even a detail that I will not forget, a unique setting. They just wanted to try pitch I at Palermo and it was with our match, the pitch seemed brand new, and it was a spectacular day. Also, we had our best match of the season, we won well, and I remember it as the happiest day in terms of sport and polo. I was really delighted for everyone, for the team and that great work, we all get on really well. As soon as we finished we went to the

stables, we prepared a barbecue and an incredible party. And almost without having time to blink, the next morning we were at the photo shoot for the Open, preparing the horses and days later playing against La Dolfina. It was impressive.

In recent years, you have managed to qualify twice for Palermo. How different is the demand compared to the other competitions?

The bar is set very high. This year, the reality is that I was able to enjoy it, the first year I perhaps paid for my inexperience or the lack of more rigorous preparation. However, last year I really enjoyed everything, with the matches, the practices, the atmosphere, it was unforgettable. As you say, it is very demanding, you have to be very well-prepare and ride very well and even so, when you reach the Open, you realise that the greats are going to be even better prepared and ride better. On the other hand, the pace of play is impressive, you play matches with eight chukkers and that is very demanding, both for the player and for the horses. In Argentina you need at least a list with 14 mares in order to get onto the pitch. You cannot hold off for even a second.

Who is the toughest opponent you have faced?

In my case, playing up front, facing Juan Martín Nero, who plays in the back position is a very difficult task. It gives you absolutely no chance (laughs). Imagine, in the case of football, the toughest and most technically perfect central defender you know marking you extremely closely, well it is like that.

¿El rival más duro con el que te enfrentaste?

En mi caso, que juego arriba, enfrentarte a Juan Martín Nero, que juega en la posición de ‘back’ es una tarea muy complicada. No te de ni una posibilidad [ríe]. Imagínate, en el caso del fútbol, al central más duro y técnicamente perfecto que conozcas marcándote a centímetros, pues algo así.

¿Y el que más te sorprendió?

Sí lo esperaba pero igualmente me sorprendió. Ver cómo se desenvolvía Porto Cambiaso, jugando de ‘tres’, era un auténtico espectáculo. Estaba como armador, dirigía, pasaba, utilizaba la cabeza, tiene unas condiciones increíbles. No por esperado, para mí, fue menos sorprendente.

El Torneo Internacional de Sotogrande regresa a los 22 goles esta temporada, ¿supone un gran salto de calidad a nivel internacional?

Es una iniciativa fantástica, muy buena. Por un lado, para el espectador y aficionado del polo en Sotogrande va a ser increíble disfrutar de ese nivel. Para el jugador, mejor que nos olvidemos del veraneo [ríe, cariñosamente]. Habrá que estar muy concentrados, veo que hay unos auténticos equipazos. En Sotogrande ya pasó con los 20 goles del año pasado, que era un ‘20’ muy mentiroso porque si te fijas, en temas de HCP, casi todos los equipos realmente serían un 22 o incluso un 24 goles. Este año aún más, cuando veas los equipos que se arman para jugar a 22, realmente tienen un valor y una calidad de 24/26 goles como mínimo. La temporada va a estar increíble y muy espectacular, impresionante. Muy divertido para verlo aunque difícil para jugarlo. Hay que estar muy concentrados por lo que, indiscutiblemente, este agosto habrá poco tiempo para el veraneo.

Dos Lunas, ¿prepara un equipo parecido?

Sí, así es. En líneas generales vamos a presentar un equipo en la misma tónica que en el pasado año y esperamos divertirnos mucho, jugar buen polo y por supuesto tratar de pelear por los máximos trofeos.

Esa Copa de Oro se resiste desde 2009… Tuvimos una época, al menos en mi caso, en la que nos costaba dividir el tema de los caballos; compensar entre Argentina y Sotogrande. Sin embargo, desde el pasado año, ya comencé a traer yeguas buenas y eso acompañado de que compré algunas y de la cría también están saliendo otras competitivas, nos están ayudando a dar el salto. En

And the one that most surprised you?

Yes, I expected it, but it also surprised me. Seeing how Porto Cambiaso performed, playing as a “three” was a real show. He was like a skipper, he directed, passed, used his head, he has incredible qualities. Despite expecting it, it was no less surprising for me.

The Sotogrande International Tournament is returning to 22 goals this season, is it a great leap in quality at an international level?

It is a fantastic initiative, really good. On one hand, for spectators and fans of polo in Sotogrande it is going to be incredible to enjoy that level. For players, it is better that we forget about summer holidays (laughs affectionately). It will be necessary to really concentrate, I see that there are really great teams. In Sotogrande it already happened with the 20 goals last year, which was a very untruthful “20” because if you look, in terms of HCP, almost all the teams would really have 22 or even 24 goals. Even more so this year, when you see the teams that are setting up to play 22, they really have the value and quality of 24/26 goals as a minimum. The season is going to be incredible and very spectacular, impressive. It is very fun to see it although difficult to play it. It is necessary to be really concentrated because, undoubtedly, this August there won’t be much time for summer holidays.

Is Dos Lunas preparing a similar team?

Yes, indeed it is. Generally, we are going to present the same kind of team as last year and we hope to have a lot of fun, play good polo and of course, try to compete for the top trophies.

The Gold Cup has resisted you since 2009...

We had a period, at least in my case, where we found it tough to divide the horses; to compensate between Argentina and Sotogrande. However, since last year, I began bringing good mares and that along with the fact that I purchased some and other competitive ones are coming from the breeding programme, they are helping us to take the leap up. In 2022 we finished very happy with the season. We miraculously missed out on the Silver Cup and in the Gold Cup we lacked a little luck. We were able to beat Dubai, I remember it was Sunday; and in the end they got through on penalties and

2022 acabamos muy contentos con la temporada. Se nos escapó la Copa de Plata de milagro y en la de Oro nos faltó algo de fortuna. Fuimos capaces de ganar a Dubai, recuerdo que fue un domingo; y al final ellos entraron por penales y al martes siguiente nos dejaron fuera en la semifinal. Pero acabamos muy contentos con la temporada, perdimos muy pocos partidos y lo pasamos muy bien. Muchas veces es ese poquito de suerte es determinante, en Sotogrande no se dio y llegué a Argentina y sí clasificamos. El deporte es así. El otro día leí una declaración muy motivadora sobre Michael Jordan, sobre que ganó seis campeonatos en sus quince temporadas. No siempre es sencillo convertir todo ese talento y trabajo en un vitoria. Pero como te decía, este año venimos con todo en Dos Lunas para pelear en Sotogrande.

on the following Tuesday they knocked us out in the semifinal. However, we finished the season very happy, we lost very few matches, and we had a really good time. Often that little bit of luck is decisive, we had it in Sotogrande, and I made it to Argentina, and we qualified. Sport is like that. The other day I read a really motivating statement about Michael Jordan, about how he won six championships in his fifteen seasons. It isn’t always easy to turn all that talent and work into a victory. But as I was saying, this year we have come with everything to Dos Lunas to battle in Sotogrande.

On a more personal level, how do you combine all that with your family life, friends, travelling and everything that elite sport entails...

En un plano más personal, cómo compaginas todo con esa vida familiar, los amigos, los viajes y todo lo que conlleva el deporte de élite…

Con el tiempo, he aprendido un poco más cómo llevarlo pero sí, es una vida exigente y que te obliga a prescindir de cosas habituales en una vida social normal. Acabas por perderte muchos planes para estar centrado en el deporte al más alto nivel. Muchas veces me dicen: “oye pero si el torneo es en agosto como que estás tan liado ahora”. Pues en eso consiste, para llegar bien a una temporada te exige trabajar con dos ó tres meses de antelación, preparar los caballos, la orgánica, el equipo, todo. Estamos en mayo y ya estoy trabajando para Sotogrande. Aunque todo eso se compensa con vivir y hacer lo que te gusta, somos unos privilegiados en ese sentido. En verano y en Sotogrande esto sucede aún más, siempre hay un buen plan [ríe]. Pero en Sotogrande, además, tiene la particularidad de que se juega muy seguido, se concentra en un mes partidos que en otras temporadas se juegan en dos. Es muy exigente.

Sotogrande para ti, para toda la familia es un lugar especial…

En Sotogrande tengo algunos de los mejores recuerdos de mi vida. Una sensación de libertad increíble, de disfrutar mucho. Era llegar a Sotogrande y poder ir a los sitios en bici, luego, más mayor, con las motos y la pandilla. Todo lo contrario a Madrid. Tengo ese recuerdo y sensación de libertad, de verano, de entrar y salir, estar con los amigos, ir a la playa y luego acabar en el polo. Sin duda, algunos de los mejores momentos de mi vida están aquí. Sotogrande es un lugar soñado.

Over time, I have learned a little more about how to deal with it but yes, it is a demanding life, and it forces you to do without the typical things in a normal social life. You end up missing out on lots of plans in order to focus on sport at the highest level. I am often told: “Listen, the tournament is in August, why are you so busy now.” Well, that is what it is about, in order to head into a season properly you have to work two or three months in advance, prepare the horses, the team, everything. It is May and I am already working for Sotogrande. However, all of that is rewarded by experiencing and doing what you like, we are privileged in that regard. In summer and in Sotogrande that happens even more, there is always a good plan (laughs). But in Sotogrande, there is also the peculiarity that the games are close together, matches are concentrated into a month that in other seasons would be played in two. It is very demanding.

For you, for the entire family, Sotogrande is a special place... I have some of the best memories of my life in Sotogrande. An incredible sense of freedom, of having a lot of fun. It was about getting to Sotogrande and being able to go places on my bike, and when I was older, with motorbikes and the gang. The complete opposite to Madrid. I have that memory and sense of freedom, summer, of arriving and leaving, being with friends, going to the beach and then ending up at the polo. Undoubtedly, some of the best moments of my life are here. Sotogrande is a dream place.

Ayala Polo Club presentó la nueva temporada para este 2023 por todo lo alto, con importantes anuncios y con la puesta de largo de algunos de los datos más destacados de los últimos años. Una apasionante temporada con más 50 equipos para las diferentes competiciones, más de 1.300 caballos y más de 250 partidos repartidos entre las sedes de Ayala y Los Pinos, a lo largo de 150 días con el mejor polo del mundo.

El acto de presentación se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones de Ayala Polo, concretamente en el reconocido restaurante Cancha II. Antonio Alés, Paola Zobel y Juan Goti (Minuto 7), dieron a conocer los primeros detalles de una gran temporada que tiene como gran protagonista el regreso de los 22 goles para el Alto Hándicap en el 52º Torneo Internacional de Polo en Sotogrande, la gran cita por excelencia del verano.

Según avanzó la propia organización, se trabaja en la consolidación del nivel alto para cerrar al menos entre 8/10 equipos en total para el 52º Torneo Internacional de Polo Sotogrande.

También se dieron a conocer varios de los nombres propios de la temporada y de las máximas estrellas que se verán este verano en Sotogrande. El regreso de Pablo Mac Donough, los Hermanos Castagnola [Barto y Jeta] defendiendo los colores de Dubai; también repite un año más con Marqués de Riscal el extraordinario polista Guillermo ‘Sapo Caset’ o el más que esperado regreso a la temporada de Sotogrande de los Pieres, en esta edición estarían confirmadas la presencia de Facundo y Pablo Pieres con MB Polo.

Nico Pieres y Fran Elizalde se alinearían con Kazak Polo Team; mientras que Dos Lunas repetirá, según todas las informaciones, cuarteto con Luis Domecq, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Joaquín Pittaluga y Cruz Heguy; mientras que Sainte Mesme está formalizando su conjunto para Sotogrande.

Having consulted Elizabeth on the matter, she did not hesitate to give her consent and suggested they could use Smith’s Lawn, in the area around Great Windsor Park. On 25 January 1955, The Household Brigade Polo Club was created, whose President is still Philip to this very day. The club took its current name, Guards Polo Club, in 1969 and its main pitch is called The Queen’s Ground, in honour of the sovereign.

A life behind the lens and an artistic legacy of priceless value for the world of polo. In January, at the celebration, the photographer Tony Ramírez (a local from the area), received a very well-deserved tribute, the Annual Baku Moritz Prize, at the World Cup of St. Moritz for an entire life and trajectory linked to the world of polo, in its most important destinations in Europe, with his tireless travelling companion: his photo camera.

Ramírez has a long trajectory and over the years and travels he has become one of the big names of sports photography through polo.. Over the years, especially at St. Moritz and in England (at the Guards Polo Club, the venue of the Queen’s Cup, among other outstanding competitions); this pioneering and expert photographer specialising in polo, has recorded and immortalised through his lens some of the most important moments in the history of this sport over recent decades.

El homenaje lo recibió durante la celebración de la Copa del Mundo 2023 en St. Moritz a finales del mes de enero. Ramírez manifestó su enorme agradecimiento nada más recibir el premio: “Es un placer regresar un año más y volver a trabajar de la mano del increíble equipo de la Snow Wolrd Cup St. Mortiz y Wolrd Polo Eventos. La final del U.S. Open Polo Championship puso en disputa a dos de los conjuntos más potentes del plantel, Park Place (Andrey Borodin, Juan Britos, Hilario Ulloa, Jason Wates) y Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Mariano “Peke” Gonzalez, Adolfo Cambiaso, sub. Agustín Nero, sub. Rufino Merlos), en una pura lucha por el título más codiciado del polo estadounidense. El National Polo Center - Wellington (NPC), fue testigo de una lucha titánica entre dos de los mejores polistas del mundo, dos jugadores de 10 goles, Ulloa y Cambiaso; duelo resuelto a favor del primero tras una ajustadísima remontada que acabó por dar el campeonato a Park Place por 12-1. Una final trepidante, con un duelo de dos colosos que finalmente cayó del lado de Ulloa para completar una temporada estadounidense de primer nivel.

Park Place y Valiente cumplieron invictos en la fase de grupos. Tras caer ante Pilot en las semifinales del torneo anterior, la Copa de Oro de la USPA, Park Place alcanzó la final del Abierto de EE.UU. tras de una victoria en semifinales por 11-8 sobre M A G., dos veces ganador de la Copa C.V. The final of the U.S. Open Polo Championship saw a duel between two of the strongest teams in the line-up, Park Place (Andrey Borodin, Juan Britos, Hilario Ulloa, Jason Wates) and Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Mariano

“Peke” Gonzalez, Adolfo Cambiaso, sub. Agustín Nero, sub. Rufino Merlos), in a pure battle for the most sought-after title in American polo. The National Polo Center - Wellington (NPC), witnessed a titanic battle between two of the world’s best polo players, two 10 goal players, Ulloa and Cambiaso; the duel was settled in favour of the former after a very close comeback that ended giving the championship to Park Place by 12-1. A breakneck final, with the clash of two giants that ultimately went Ulloa’s way to complete a first-rate American season.

Park Place and Valiente were undefeated in the group stage. After losing against Pilot in the semi-finals of the previous tournament, the Gold Cup of the USPA, Park Place reached the final of the U.S. Open after a semi-final victory of 11-8 over M A G., two-time winner of the C.V. Whitney Cup (2021, 2022).

El premio Willis Hartman U.S. Open Polo Championship Best Playing Pony y Best Argentine Bred fue para Latia Kavaska de Ulloa (Ellerstina Picaro x Future La Karateka). Ulloa, emocionado, confesó: “creo que realmente jugamos como un equipo y utilizamos a todas nuestras armas. Tenemos un pottencialincreíble, la idea era mover la bocha tan rápido como pudiéramos. Utilizar los caballos, y creo que en el último chukker, los caballos marcaron una gran diferencia”. Al ganar el US Open por primera vez, Britos explicó: “He estado soñando con este momento durante mucho, mucho tiempo. Es difícil expresarlo con palabras [...] Significa tanto para mí, para mi familia y para todos los que han formado parte de mi viaje, que no podría estar más feliz”.

In turn, Valiente made a winning return to the high handicap season for the first time since it won its second U.S. Open title in 2017. Making its debut at the Guantlet, Valiente began the 22-goal season ensuring the C.V. Whitney Cup over Pilot. In search of their tenth U.S. Open Polo Championship title (1999, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2021).

The Willis Hartman U.S. Open Polo Championship Best Playing Pony and Best Argentine Bred prize went to Latia Kavaska de Ulloa (Ellerstina Picaro x Future La Karateka). Ulloa, thrilled, confessed: “I think that we really played like a team and used all of our weapons. We have incredible potential; the idea was to move the ball as quickly as we could. Use the horses, and I think that in the last chukkers, the horses made a big difference.” Upon winning the US Open for the first time, Britos explained: “I have been dreaming of this moment for a long, long time. It is difficult to express it with words [...] It means so much for me, for my family and for everyone who has been part of my journey, I couldn’t be any happier.”

La Natividad, defensor del Abierto Argentino, sólo pudo hacerse con la victoria en Tortugas.

En la mítica cancha 1 de Palermo, el conjunto de Cañuelas [La Dolfina Saudi] venció a su vecino La Natividad por 13-9 en la final del 129° Abierto Argentino de Polo HSBC, máximo certamen mundial de interclubes en el que participaron de 10 equipos de entre 28 y 39 goles de handicap conformados por los jugadores más importantes del mundo, entre ellos los 9 polistas que ostentan los 10 goles de valorización en nuestro país. De esta manera consiguió su título N° 15 en el torneo e igualó a Hurlingham como el segundo máximo ganador del torneo, sólo superados por Coronel Suárez

Fue una jornada histórica –una más– para el polo argentino, ya que Poroto Cambiaso, con sólo 17 años y 6 días, se convirtió en el polista más joven en lograr ser campeón del Abierto Argentino, superando a Benjamín Araya, que ostentaba el récord con 17 años, 3 meses y 11 días. Además, fue el primer título en Palermo de Adolfito junto a su hijo, cumpliendo uno de los pocos sueños que le restaba realizar.

It was a historic day –one more– for Argentine polo, since Poroto Cambiaso, at just 17 years and 6 days old, became the youngest polo player to win the Argentine Open, surpassing Benjamín Araya, who held the record with 17 years, 3 months and 11 days. In addition, it was the first title in Palermo for Adolfito together with his son, fulfilling one of the few dreams he had to fulfill.

Tras cuatro torneos de Triple Corona sin lograrlo (su último título fue en Palermo 2020), La Dolfina Saudi volvió a levantar un trofeo “grande”. Superó por 13 a 12 a La Irenita Grand Champions para adjudicarse el 129° Abierto RUS del Hurlingham Club.

En la parcela individual, para Cambiaso fue su título N° 14 en Hurlingham; JuanMa Nero consiguió el trofeo por 10ma. vez; mientras que el uruguayo Pelón Stirling llegó a su 7mo. título. En tanto, Poroto ganó la primer corona de su vida, con sólo 16 años de edad. ¡Qué futuro!

After four Triple Crown tournaments without achieving it (its last title was in Palermo 2020), La Dolfina Saudi once again lifted a “big” trophy. They beat La Irenita Grand Champions 13-12 to win the 129th Hurlingham Club RUS Open.

In the individual plot, for Cambiaso it was his 14th title in Hurlingham; JuanMa Nero got the trophy for the 10th. time; while the Uruguayan Pelon Stirling reached his 7th. qualification. Meanwhile, Bean won the first crown of his life, with only 16 years of age. What future!

La Natividad logró un único trofeo que le faltaba tras vencer e cancha 7 de Tortuguitas por 14 a 13 al máximo ganador del torneo, Ellerstina Turismo Felgueres y de esta manera, se adjudicó el 82° Abierto del Tortugas Country Club Stella Artois presentado por TRS Hotels. Con un estupendo partido de Camilo Castagnola, autor de 10 goles, el conjunto de Cañuelas logró el único título que le faltaba y en este momento es el campeón reinante en los tres certámenes de la Triple Corona de la AAP. ¡Imparable!

La Natividad achieved a single trophy that it lacked after defeating the top winner of the tournament, Ellerstina Turismo Felgueres, on field 7 of Tortuguitas, 14-13, and thus won the 82nd Tortugas Country Club Stella Artois Open presented by TRS Hotels. With a stupendous game by Camilo Castagnola, author of 10 goals, the Cañuelas team achieved the only title they were missing and is currently the reigning champion in the three AAP Triple Crown contests. Unstoppable!

Logró vencer a la Zeta, que tuvo a Facundo Pieres como su mejor valor en la jornada y de esta manera, el equipo de General Rodríguez no pudo estirar su racha en Tortuguitas, en el que lleva 13 títulos y 16 finales disputadas en forma consecutiva (la última vez en la que no estuvo Ellerstina en la definición fue en 2006, cuando Indios Chapaleufú II venció a La Aguada por 14-11).

El 911 es el Porsche por excelencia, el coche en el que se inspiran el resto de modelos de la compañía y el que define como ningún otro su ADN. En estos sesenta años de vida ha habido ocho generaciones y todas ellas han mantenido la esencia del vehículo original, tanto en diseño como en concepción, pero incorporando siempre numerosos avances tecnológicos para seguir siendo el referente de los grandes deportivos.

La preocupación por la sostenibilidad y el medio ambiente también han ido muy ligados al 911, un coche que a pesar de sus prestaciones y extraordinario rendimiento ha sido pionero en adoptar mecanismos como el catalizador o la inyección directa de combustible, que contribuyeron a reducir significativamente las emisiones contaminantes y que posteriormente se popularizaron en el sector del automóvil.

The 911 is the Porsche par excellence, the car that inspires the other models of the company and which defines its DNA like no other. Over these sixty years there have been eight generations and all of them have maintained the essence of the original vehicle, both in terms of design and conception, while always incorporating several technological advances in order to remain the benchmark of great sports cars.

The concern about sustainability and the environment have also been very linked to the 911, a car which, despite its features and extraordinary performance, has been a pioneer in adopting mechanisms such as the catalytic converter and direct fuel injection, which contributed to significantly reducing polluting emissions and were subsequently popularised in the car sector.

Además de contar con la presencia de decenas de Porsche 911 y de miles de aficionados, no quisieron perderse esta concentración numerosas personalidades de la firma y del sector. Allí disfrutaron contemplando modelos históricos como los primeros 911 Targa o el primer Turbo de los 70, que resplandecían en un día muy soleado con el marco de fondo de esa Plaza de España, ubicada dentro del Parque de María Luisa.

La estampa parecía de película, algo que no es ajeno a este escenario en el que se han rodado grandes producciones cinematográficas como Lawrence de Arabia o una de las películas de la saga de La Guerra de las Galaxias (Star Wars Episodio II: El Ataque de los Clones).

In addition to having the presence of numerous Porsche 911 and thousands of fans, several figures from the firm and sector did not want to miss this gathering. There, they enjoyed looking at historic models such as the first 911 Targa and the first Turbo from the 70’s, which dazzled on a very sunny day with the background of Plaza de España, located within the Parque de María Luisa.

The scene looked like a film, something that is not unconnected to this setting where great film productions have been shot such as Lawrence of Arabia and one of the films from the Star Wars saga (Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones).

España marca el paso, el ritmo y celebra una gran y épica victoria internacional en el mundo del polo. La selección española se proclamó Campeona del XII Mundial de Polo, celebrado en Wellington (Florida, USA), tras vencer en la gran final a la selección local de Estados Unidos por 11 goles a 10. Un triunfo que convierte para la historia y que hace entrar en la leyenda nacional de este deporta e sus integrantes: Nicolas Alvarez, Luis Domecq, Nicolas Ruiz Guiñazu y Pelayo Berazadi.

Para llegar a la Gran Final, el conjunto español tuvo que superar a diferentes selecciones tanto en la fase de grupos como en el cuadro de eliminatorias directas. Destacar que la selección de Uruguay completó el podio de honor al finalizar en tercera posición.

En la fase de grupos, España superó a los combinados de Pakistán (9-7,5); México (11-4,5) y cedió ante Argentina por 6 goles a 3,5. Con estos resultados se clasificó para las semifinales en las que se impuso con superioridad a Uruguay por 10,5 goles a 7.

La Final ante Estados Unidos estuvo en un pañuelo y acabó con victoria española por un tanto de diferencia (11-10); mientras que Uruguay superó a Argentina en la final de consolación por 9 goles a 7,5. Sin duda, una fecha que quedará para la historia del polo español.

Spain dictated the pace, rhythm and celebrated a great and epic international victory at the world polo championship. The Spanish team was crowned Champion of the XII World Polo Championship, held in Wellington (Florida, USA), after winning in the grand finale against the local side of the United States by 11 goals to 10. A victory that makes history and makes the team part of the national legend of this sport with its members: Nicolas Alvarez, Luis Domecq, Nicolas Ruiz Guiñazu and Pelayo Berazadi.

In order to reach the Grand Finale, the Spanish team had to beat different teams in both the group stage and in the direct knockout stage. It is worth highlighting that the Uruguay side completed the podium of honour by finishing third.

In the group stage, Spain beat the sides of Pakistan (9-7,5); Mexico (11-4,5) and lost against Argentina by 6 goals to 3.5. With these results it qualified for the semifinals in which it won with superiority against Uruguay by 10.5 goals to 7.

The Final against the United States was very closelyfought and finished with a Spanish victory with a goal difference (11-10); while Uruguay beat Argentina in the consolation final by 9 goals to 7.5. Undoubtedly, a date that will go down in the history of Spanish polo.

Emblematic Paniagua field in Sotogrande

One of the mythical settings for enjoying polo in the resort during the end of the 70’s and start of the 80’s. The star of a short stage of transition and growth in polo in Sotogrande, between the beach pitch and international exposure and impact of the tournaments at the Río pitches.

El polo y Sotogrande forman un binomio intrínseco y fuertemente ligado desde los inicios de la urbanización. La influencia de Enrique Zobel y su idea de asentar el polo como uno de los pilares en la personalidad del resort es a día de hoy, más de seis décadas después, un pilar sin el que es complicado entender el estilo de vida de Sotogrande y su comunidad.

Polo and Sotogrande form an intrinsic pairing and strongly linked since the beginnings of the resort. The influence of Enrique Zobel and his idea of establishing polo as one of the pillars in the character of the resort is now, more than six decades later, a pillar without which it is difficult to understand the lifestyle of Sotogrande and its community.

Durante estos más de 60 años de vida, el polo ha tenido diferentes sedes y escenarios en los que disfrutarse. Desde sus orígenes con la mítica e histórica cancha de la playa, pasando por la cancha de Paniagua, las de Río, Puente de Hierro o más reciente zona de Los Pinos; además de la gran explosión y crecimiento de importantes clubes adyacentes como Ayala Polo Club y Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, ambos con imponentes complejos ecuestres y polísticos. Todo ello dibuja desde mediados del siglo anterior un destino privilegiado para este selecto deporte al sur de Europa.

En este caso, como bien ilustran las imágenes, POLO by La Bocha quiere recordar ese período y etapa entre dos ciclos muy importantes para el polo en la urbanización como fue el salto entre finales de los años 70 y los años 80. Especialmente con el periodo en la que se mantuvo muy activa la cancha de Paniagua, afincada en uno de los entornos más privilegiados de Sotogrande.

Over these more than 60 years of existence, polo has had different venues and settings to be enjoyed at. Since its origins with the legendary and historic beach pitch, along with the pitch at Paniagua, those of Río, Puente de Hierro and more recently the area of Los Pinos; as well as the great explosion and growth of important adjacent clubs such as Ayala Polo Club and Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo, both with impressive equestrian and polo complexes. Since midway through the last century, all of this has created a privileged destination for this select sport in southern Europe.

In this case, as the images illustrate well, POLO by La Bocha wants to remember that period and stage between two very important cycles for polo in the resort, namely the leap between the end of the 70’s and the 80’s. Especially with the period in which the pitch at Paniagua remained very active, based in one of the most privileged parts of Sotogrande.

Recordar que fue, por situar en contexto, en 1973 cuando se celebró la primera edición de Copa de Plata en el Torneo de Verano, cuyo vencedor fue el equipo de Sotogrande y precisamente, al año siguiente se inauguró la cancha de polo de Paniagua. Para fijar un poco más de información a este respecto, destacar su enorme importancia durante algunos momentos de la historia del resort, ya que un fuerte temporal y crecida de agua se llevó por delante la cancha de la playa en 1984.

La cancha de Paniagua acogió numerosos encuentros e inolvidables trofeos con toda la esencia del polo en Sotogrande. Destacar que meses más tarde al incidente de la cancha de la playa se comenzó con la construcción de unas nuevas canchas que tomarían el relevo de Panigua (ya prácticamente en desuso) canchas de Río, que entre 1985 y 1986 tomaría el relevo de Paniagua y se convertirían durante años en la sede central de los torneos de polo en la urbanización. En ese momento las nuevas canchas junto al río (con acceso actual por calle Ramiro el montje), serían renombradas bajo las denominaciones de Sotogrande I y Sotogrande II. Destacar como dato histórico, que la edición de 1989 quedará marcada en el histórico por su obligada suspensión a causa de la peste equina.

It is worth remembering that, to provide context, in 1973 when the first edition of the Silver Cup took place in the Summer Cup, won by the Sotogrande team and indeed, the Paniagua polo pitch opened the following year. To offer a little more information in this regard, it is worth highlighting its enormous importance during some moments in the history of the resort, as a strong storm and flood wiped out the beach pitch in 1984. The Paniagua pitch hosted several matches and unforgettable trophies with all the essence of polo in Sotogrande. It is worth highlighting that months after the incident of the beach pitch, construction began on new pitches that would take over from Paniagua (now practically unused), the Río pitches, which between 1985 and 1986 would take over from Paniagua and for years become the main venue for polo tournaments in the resort. At that point, the new pitches next to the river would be remained as Sotogrande I and Sotogrande II. As an historic figure, it is worth highlighting that the 1989 edition will go down in history as it was forced to be suspended due to horse sickness.

La evolución del destino seguiría creciendo con las canchas de Puente de Hierro, fundadas en 1992; y años más tarde, en 1995, se construyeron las canchas de Haciendas de San Enrique I y II, otro gran avance de instalaciones políticas en la zona. El inicio de la década de los 90 impulsaría una mayor profesionalización del Torneo Verano, así como de las diferentes copas, con el aterrizaje de grandes organizaciones y patrones internacionales de gran prestigio, así como el apoyo y patrocinio de importantes marcas comerciales. En 1998 participaron por primera vez más de 1.000 caballos en el torneo, un paso hacia delante que puso en marcha un crecimiento exponencial año tras año, edición tras edición, que iría aumentando por encima de la treintena los equipos profesionales participantes torneo cada verano en Sotogrande.

The evolution of the destination would continue to grow with the pitches of Puente de Hierro, founded in 1992; and years later, in 1995, the Haciendas de San Enrique pitches I and II were built, another great advance in polo facilities in the area. The start of the decade of the 90’s drove greater professionalisation of the Summer Tournament, as well as of the different cups, with the arrival of great organisations and international patrons of great prestige, as well as the support and sponsorship of important commercial brands. In 1998, more than 1,000 horses participated in the tournament for the first time, a step forward that launched exponential growth year after year, edition after edition, which increased to over thirty professional teams participating in the tournament each summer in Sotogrande.

Diez años más tarde, en 2008, llega el salto definitivo a nivel cuantitativo y cualitativo con la inauguración de la zona de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club. La gran explosión a todos los niveles del polo en Sotogrande, en calidad de profesionalización, consumo, asistentes, espacios, canchas, equipos y mucho más. Ten years later, in 2008, the definitive leap at a quantitative and qualitative level came with the opening of the Los Pinos area at Santa María Polo Club. Una vida al galope / Life at a gallop

Como casi todas las cosas importantes que te marcan en la vida, que pone un punto de luz y una guía para marcar la ruta, ca minan contigo desde la niñez. Mi pasión comienza en casa, en Buenos Aires de la mano de mi papá que jugaba al polo amateur y desde pequeño monté y estuve cerca de los caballos. Años después, la vida me llevó por otros derroteros, también ligado al rugby pero siempre cerca del deporte, e incluso probé el pupitre bajo el sueño de ingeniero, pero algo de todo eso quedó dentro de mí. Al cumplir los 20 surgió la oportunidad, gracias a un amigo, de ir a trabajar a Texas [USA] y el polo volvió a posicionarse en el centro de mi vida. Fui adquiriendo destreza, conocimientos y una cierta reputación que me llevó a conocer lugares increíbles hasta recabar en Florida, uno de los grandes epicentros del polo. En esa época no pensaba que mi vida quedaría ligada al polo, no me preocupaba demasiado el mañana, vivía el día a día, pero sin darme cuenta cada vez me lo tomaba más en serio y mi futuro fue alineándose.

Recogí todo ese conocimiento y regresé a Argentina, por aquella época debía tener dos goles de HCP, pero allá todo es más difícil y la suerte me volvió a presentar otra oportunidad, venir a Europa. A través de un polista inglés, con el que tenía muy buena relación, Julian Hipwood, encontré la posibilidad de recalar en Bélgica, concretamente en el Antwerp Polo Club [Amberes], allí aprendí mucho, a la fuerza, pero mucho sobre la gestión de un club. Hacía de jugador, polo manager, profesor, gestor,…, de todo lo que hiciera falta. Guardo un gran recuerdo de aquella etapa que duró casi 10 años, un tiempo en el que alterné temporadas con Argentina dónde monté una escuela de polo. En aquella época viajé por todo el centro de Europa porque los clubes estaban muy bien organizados y era muy común competir cercanos de Alemania, Francia, etc. Y justo ahí, arrancó mi conexión con Sotogrande.

En aquellos años 90, David Stirling [Senior], había comenzado a hacer algunas cosas de polo en Bélgica y ya estaba muy bien posicionado en Sotogrande. Organizaba el polo aquí pero también mandaba gente a otros clubes de Bélgica y Europa [concretamente al de mi competencia] y a raíz de eso nos conocimos. Al tiempo, dando vueltas, me ofreció venir a Sotogrande, algo que fue un punto de inflexión en mi vida y un punto fijo en el mapa.

El polo estaba en un momento fantástico de crecimiento y expansión aquí, con el gran trabajo de los Mora-Figueroa y Zobel, que de la mano de David, consiguieron que Sotogrande se posicionase como una gran temporada con la presencia de los mejores jugadores del mundo y algunas de las organizaciones más importantes. Yo tenía referencias porque equipos como Los Nogales o Scapa, de Bélgica ya venían a Sotogrande. Vine al final del pasado milenio y aquí sigo, enamorado del polo y de Sotogrande, por supuesto. Desde entonces pasaron muchas cosas y puso en práctica todo el aprendizaje: jugaba cuando era necesario [tenía unos 4 goles], hacía de referee, de comentarista, de polo manager o de lo que hiciera falta. También pusimos en marcha estupendas iniciativas como el polo en invierno [en verano siempre funcionó]. Cuando estás dentro de un club, debes poner todo lo que haga falta por sumar.

Sotogrande es y será un lugar único para el polo y aún sigue con mucho potencial por explotar. Dentro de lo malo que fue la pandemia también abrió nuevas oportunidades como el teletrabajo y otras cuestiones que han acercado más patrones a la zona. Eso ayudará a que uno de los grandes retos históricos del polo en Sotogrande, ponerlo en circulación todo el año, pueda cumplirse. Por mi parte, de una manera u otra pienso que siempre estaré unido a este lugar, mi hijo [Rocho] nació aquí y pude transmitirle esa misma pasión. Míralo ahora, de jugador en la temporada británica. Sé que de una forma u otra a Sotogrande y el polo, siempre inventando y con proyectos. Ahora también estoy con la temporada de Dubai, dónde organiza la competición, y con diferentes iniciativas de polo aquí en Sotogrande y también en Madrid y Barcelona. Las cosas fueron así y disfruté mucho de todo ello, aún disfruto de una vida tan bonita ligada al caballo y al polo. Algo que me ha permitido conocer lugares increíbles como Sotogrande.

Like almost all the important things that mark you in life, which provide a touch of light and a guide to show the way, they walk with you from childhood. My passion began at home, in Buenos Aires alongside my father who played amateur polo and from a young age I rode and was close to horses. Years later, my life led me in other directions, also linked to rugby but always close to sport, and I even tried studying with the dream of being an engineer, but something of all that remained in me.

When I turned 20, the opportunity arose, thanks to a friend, to go and work in Texas (USA) and polo once again positioned itself at the centre of my life. I gradually acquired skill, knowledge and a certain reputation that led me to discover incredible places before ending up in Florida, one of the great epicentres of polo. At that time I didn’t think that my life would end up linked to polo, I wasn’t too worried about the future, I lived day to day, but without realising I was taking it increasingly seriously and my future was gradually aligning.

I amassed all that knowledge and I returned to Argentina, at that time I must have had two HCP goals, but everything is more difficult there and luck presented me with another opportunity, coming to Europe. Through an English polo player, with whom I had a very good relationship, Julian Hipwood, I found the possibility to come to Belgium, specifically to the Antwerp Polo Club (Antwerp), I learned a lot there, forcibly, but lots about the management of a club. I served as a player, polo manager, teacher, manager... Everything that was needed. I have great memories of that period which lasted almost 10 years, a period in which I alternated seasons with Argentina where I set up a polo school.

At that time I travelled around all of central Europe because the clubs were very well-organised and it was very common to compete near Germany, France, etc. And that is where my connection with Sotogrande began.

During the 90’s, David Stirling (Senior), had started doing some polo things in Belgium and was already very well-positioned in Sotogrande. He organised polo here, but he also sent people to other clubs in Belgium and Europe (specifically to the one under my responsibility) and we met as a result of that. Over time, after consideration, he offered me to come to Sotogrande, which was a turning point in my life and a fixed point on the map.

Polo was in a fantastic time of growth and expansion here, with the great work of the Mora-Figueroa and Zobel families, who alongside David, enabled Sotogrande to position itself as a great season with the presence of the world’s best players and some of the most important organisations. I had references because teams such as Los Nogales and Scapa, from Belgium, already came to Sotogrande. I came at the end of the last century and remain here, in love with polo and Sotogrande, of course.

A lot of things have happened since then and I have put everything I learned into practice: I played when necessary (I had 4 goals), I served as referee, commentator, polo manager or whatever was necessary. We also launched amazing initiatives such as polo in winter (it always worked in summer). When you are in a club, you have to do everything necessary to contribute.

Sotogrande is and will be a unique place for polo and it still has a lot of potential to exploit. No matter how bad the pandemic was it also opened up new opportunities such as teleworking and other matters that have brought more patrons to the zone. That will help one of the major historic challenges of polo in Sotogrande, putting it into circulation throughout the year, to be fulfilled.

In turn, in one way or another, I think that I will always be linked to this place, my son (Rocho) was born here, and I was able to pass that same passion onto him. Look at him now, he is a player in the British season. I know that in one way or another, Sotogrande and polo will always invent and have projects. Now I am also working with the season in Dubai, where I organise the competition, and with different polo initiatives here in Sotogrande and also in Madrid and Barcelona. Things went like that, and I really enjoyed it all, I still enjoy a very beautiful life linked to horses and polo. Which has enabled me to discover incredible places like Sotogrande.
