t doesn’t bring me pleasure to have to start an editorial speaking about us, but in this case its necessary. The reason is obvious, it has always been said that union means strength. Two organizations devoted to the world of polo communications since forever, Grupo HCP and Pololine, join forces to re-launch a unique and exclusive publication that shows the essence of polo at a world-class level: H10 Polo by La Bocha.
o me agrada nada iniciar una editorial hablando de nosotros, en este caso sí es necesario hacerlo. La razón es obvia, siempre se dijo que la unión hace la fuerza. Dos organizaciones vinculadas al mundo de la comunicación del polo desde antaño, Grupo HCP y Pololine, estrechan lazos para relanzar una publicación única y exclusiva que muestre lo esencial del polo a nivel universal: H10 Polo by La Bocha. This alliance has been in the works for more than a year. Its consequence is the commitment of adding value to polo in moments where it shows certain issues in its international trajectory, as affirm some of the interviewees in this edition. We aim to show the reality and potential of this huge sport that has so much to offer and obviously needs the consensus of everyone. We had a strong start and are mid-season in one of the landmarks of the world of polo: Sotogrande.
In this edition we have tried to get the best players in the world to analyze the current state of polo, an excellent piece that will surprise the polo parish. We also wanted to get closer to Javier Tanoira whose exceptional achievement of evolving the current polo rules, at the end of the day an ordeal, but very possible. Also, don’t miss the interviews with Pite Merlos and Facundo Pieres, two strong opinions in a crucial moment for polo.
Esta alianza se viene fraguando desde hace más de un año y su consecuencia es el compromiso por dar valor añadido al polo en momentos donde muestra ciertas dudas en su trayectoria internacional, tal y como afirman algunos de los entrevistados en esta edición. Pretendemos mostrar la realidad y la potencialidad de este enorme deporte que tanto ofrece y que obviamente necesita del consenso de todos. Arrancamos con mucha fuerza y en plena temporada de uno de los lugares emblemáticos del mundo del polo: Sotogrande. En las paginas interiores hemos pretendido que los mejores jugadores del mundo analicen el estado actual del polo, excelente nota que sorprenderá a la parroquia polística. También quisimos acercarnos de la mano de Javier Tanoira a esa excepción de lograr una evolución en las actuales reglas del polo, sí una odisea al fin y al cabo, pero muy posible, no se la pierdan. Las notas de Pite Merlos y Facundo Pieres ni las avanzo, sencillamente porque hay que recrearse en sus declaraciones, gente con tanto arraigo en este deporte que se moja en pro de una evolución de un deporte que crece día a día. Hay que leerlas, no las pase de hojas.

Fantastic champinonship match against La Indiana. A game of two halves as horsepower beats willpower. Both King Power Foxes and La Indiana arrived at the final of the 2016 British Open for the Gold Cup after two astounding semifinals wins, in which both had come from behind to earn their place in the 61st year of this tournament at Cowdray Park Polo Club.
En una gran final que se llevó a cabo en Cowdray Park Polo Club, King Power Foxes logró su gran objetivo: venció a La Indiana y ganó la Gold Cup for the British Open por segundo año consecutivo.
In the opening chukka, Michael Bickford broke from line out but Hugo Lewis got the ball and passed to Gonzalito Pieres, who was fouled. Facundo Pieres scored from the ensuing Penalty 4, making it 1-0 to King Power Foxes. Hugo Lewis took the ball from the lineout and ran to score, 2-0. Agustin “Tincho” Merlos hit in but Gonzalito
Los espectadores que acudieron a presenciar la gran final en el histórico club, en Midhurst, no salieron defraudados: tanto King Power como La Indiana brindaron un espectáculo de primera, un partido muy veloz, corrido, con muchos y muy buenos goles de jugada y pocos via penal. Una gran iniciativa, por la cual se acordó que los referees dejen jugar más y no cobren fouls innecesarios. El resultado estuvo a la vista a lo largo de los seis intensos chukkers de juego.

picked up the ball and struck for the third goal, 3-0. Tincho Merlos then scored from the line out, 3-1. Shortly afterwards, Tincho passed to Julian “Negro” de Lusarreta, the revelation of this year’s high goal season, for him to score, 3-2. A King Power Foxes attack ended with a shot from Facundo, which went just wide. Hugo Lewis had a fine run just before the whistle went for the end of the first chukka, with King Power Foxes leading 3-2. The second chukka started and the action continued at a frantic pace. Facu had a run down field but then Tincho got the ball and struck a shot that was just wide. There followed a couple of minutes where both sides missed shots in the field and at goal. Negro de Lusarreta ran the length of the field to level the score at 3-3. Facu fired a shot at goal but it bounced of a pony’s leg and over the back line

La final tuvo una primera parte muy corrida, pareja y muy intensa, aunque King Power sacó una temprana ventaja. Arrancó Facundo Pieres con la conversión de un penal de 40 yardas, al que siguieron dos goles de jugada de Hugo Lewis y Gonzalito Pieres. Era 3 a 0 para King Power, pero La Indiana logró responder promediando ese primer chukker. A shot from Nic Roldan hit the goal post and then Gonza took the ball up field but his shot at goal went wide. Facu then picked up the ball, hit an incredibly high shot and then tapped it through to score, 5-3. A Penalty 3 was awarded to La Indiana, from which Tincho scored, 5-4. Nic Roldan hit a great near side under the neck shot to level 5-5 at half time. Throughout the first half, Tal Shrivaddhanaprabha had been closely marking his opposing patron Michael Bickford and both sides had battled hard in what had been, thus far, an even contest. The second half started and for both teams it was all to play for. Gonza had a shot at goal but it went just wide of the left post. Tin-

Tincho grabbed the ball and Nic Roldan shot wide to the left. Facu ran the ball and shot just wide of the right post. The game was at a crucial and tense stage, with both sides showing a touch of nervousness, evidenced by missed shots, which might normally have scored goals. Nearing the end of the chukka, with the score still 5-5 a Penalty 5b was awarded to La Indiana. Tincho hit towards Nic Roldan but he fouled Gonza and King Power Foxes got a Penalty 5b. Facu tapped once and launched an enormous shot but it went just wide. No goals were scored in the fourth chukka but both sides tried unsuccessfully several times to break the tie. At the start of the fifth chukka, Facu had an under the neck shot which just went wide to the right of goal. A Penalty 3 in favour of King Power Foxes taken by Facu went wide. Gonza got the ball and ran towards goal. He struck a good near side shot towards goal, which slowed as it reached the goal line, allowing Negro de Lusarreta to take a backhander to save a score but unfortunately for La Indiana, he mishit and the ball got over the goal line breaking the deadlock, 6-5. Gonza then scored at the other end of the field 7-5. Gonza had a cut shot at goal but it went wide a minute before the end of the chukka. This fifth chukka was the one where King Power Foxes’ horsepower eventually started to impact the game, as well as Gonzalito’s outstanding plays. It seemed that this had been the crucial breakthrough chukka for King Power Foxes. Fighting on at the start of the sixth chukka, Tincho moved the ball up field trying to pass to Nic Roldan but then Gonza had a run and Facu backed him up moving towards goal but he couldn’t score as the ball was trodden into the ground. A throw in allowed La Indiana to move up field but then Facu passed to Gonza who scored on his bay mare Katrina, 8-5. Gonza then took the ball the length of the field to score 9-5 with only two minutes remaining. Tincho had a run in the last minute but was closely marked by Hugo Lewis, who had been stuck to Tincho like Velcro for most of the chukka. Gonza got the ball and runs 60 yards before the final bell went. King Power Foxes end up as the convincing winners, 9-5 after an outstanding final. Gonzalito had an outstanding last two chukkas, scoring the last four goals and Hugo Lewis played such a key role in marking players rated far higher in handicap than him. n

Ese penúltimo chukker fue crucial para definir el partido. Comenzó a notarse cierto desgaste en los caballos de La Indiana, que supo aprovechar King Power, con una caballada superior. Y además, apareció un gran Gonzalito Pieres quien se encargó de anotar los dos goles que iban a ser el quiebre. El campeón defensor ganaba 2 a 0 ese parcial y se iba 7 a 5 arriba a jugar el último chukker. Durante los últimos minutos de partido, La Indiana apeló a su garra y corazón para intentar acercarse a un King Power que iba decidido a sellar el resultado. Cada ataque de La Indiana era frenado por la cerrada defensa de King Power; en especial, con la férrea marca de Hugo Lewis sobre Agustin Merlos. Mientras tanto, un pase de Facundo a su hermano Gonzalito iba a terminar en gol. Y cuando faltaban algo más de dos minutos de tiempo reglamentario, el propio Gonzalito coronó una tremenda performance con su cuarto gol consecutivo en dos chukker para ponerle la frutilla al postre. Así, por segundo año consecutivo, King Power Foxes se coronó dueño del oro en Inglaterra. n

The Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious polo tournaments in the world. Every year, the best polo players head to Cowdray Park Polo Club to play for the most important title in Europe. The tournament was first played in 1956 thanks to the initiative of the 3rd Viscount of Cowdray, Weetman John Churchill Pearson, who led the polo renaissance in England after the Second World War. Much of the tournament, and crucially, the final, are played on the splendid fields at Lawns, in the shadow of the ruins of Cowdray Castle. What is the story behind these impressive ruins, synonymous of the club and the Gold Cup?
La Gold Cup for the British Open es, como todos saben, uno de los trofeos más codiciados del mundo, considerado el tercero en importancia mundial tras el Argentino Abierto y el US Open. Cada año, en Cowdray Park Polo Club, se dan cita los mejores polistas para tratar de llegar a la que se considera la final más importante de Europa. El certamen se juega desde 1956, impulsado por el Tercer Vizconde Cowdray, Weetman John Churchill Pearson, quien encabezó el renacer del polo en Inglaterra, tras las devastadoras consecuencias de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. FROM PLANTAGENETS TO TUDORS
DE LOS PLANTAGENET A LOS TUDOR...
The history of Cowdray Castle dates back to the Middle Ages, between 1274-1284, during the reign of the Plantagenet family (1154-1399), when Sir John Bohound constructed the first fortified manor house in Midhurst, West Sussex (about 75 km from London). Bohound named it Coudreye, the Norman word for the nearby hazel woods. In the 1520s, Sir David Owen, uncle to Henry VII began construction of the currentCowdray House on the site of the former home Coudreye, which he had acquired upon the death of his wife Mary Bohun in 1496. In 1529, Sir Owen’s son, Henry, sold the estate of Cowdray to Sir William Fitzwilliam. In 1533 Henry VIII granted licence to Fitzwilliam’s trustees to inpark 600 acres (240 ha) of meadow, pasture and wood and build fortifications at “Cowdry”. The castle shone most during the Tudor Period, when it became one of the most emblematic buildings of the time. Henry VIII is recorded to have made three visits to the house during his reign, in August 1538, July 1539 and August 1545. The house was later visited by his son, Edward VI in July 1552 and by his daughter Elizabeth I in August 1591. Mary of Guise, widow of James V of Scotland, stayed a night at Cowdray in October 1551. The castle’s history also has a tragic side: In November 1538, the last surviving member of the House of Plantagenet, Lady Margaret Pole, 8th Countess of Salisbury, was imprisoned at Cowdray until September 1539 due to accusations she protested the rupture with the Catholic Church. She was the niece of Richard III, last Plantagenet King who died at Bosworth Field in 1485. She was removed to the Tower of Londonand was executed in May 1541. Wars and executions aside, in 1548 Sir Anthony Browne inherited Cowdray. He was later ennobled as the 1st Viscount Montague upon the marriage of Queen Mary to King Philip of Spain.
La historia del Castillo de Cowdray arranca en la Edad Media, entre 1274 y 1284, en pleno reinado de la Casa Plantagenet (1154-1399), cuando Sir John Bohound hizo construir la primera fortaleza, en la ciudad de Midhurst, West Sussex (a unos 75 km de Londres). Bohound la llamó Coudreye, una palabra que en normando identifica a los castaños que lo rodean. Cowdray tiene también un lado trágico - hacia 1538, Lady Margaret Pole, Octava Condesa de Salisbury y última sobreviviente de la Casa Plantagenet, estuvo prisionera en el castillo debido a supuestas vinculaciones (que nunca pudieron probarse) con las protestas a consecuencia de la ruptura con la Iglesia Católica. THE RUINS: FROM THE GREAT FIRE TO THE PRESENT DAY - CONSERVATION, RESTORATION, AND THE BIRTH OF COWDRAY PARK POLO CLUB Two hundred and fifty years later, the castle was in the hands of the 8th Viscount Montague. The Viscount was due to be married shortly, and ordered that restorations be made on the castle in time for his wedding. During these works, on September 24, 1793, a fire started in the carpenters’ workshop in the North Gallery, destroying practically everything. Less than two weeks later, the 8th Viscount Montague perished whilst trying to ride the Rhine Falls and the title passed to a descendent of the 2nd Viscount, Mark Browne, who later died childless and the peerage became extinct. The estate was then inherited by the 8th Viscount’s sister and, by marriage, to William Stephen Poyntz. During the early 19th, century the house was left to ruin; it was quickly colonised by plants, most notably ivy, which hastened its decay. Small alterations were made to the surviving Kitchen Tower such as a floor being put in above the kitchens, however it was not inhabited. Following the death of William Poyntz

the estate passed to his three daughters, however they could not decide how to divide the estate and it was eventually sold to the 6th Earl of Egmont in 1843. In 1908 the 8th Earl of Egmont sold the estate to Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson, becoming Baron Cowdray of Midhurst and later in 1917 became the 1st Viscount Cowdray. The Viscount put a halt to the decay, arranging for the careful removal of the ivy, the restoration of any unsafe structures and a full survey of the ruins to be completed. Meanwhile, around the ruins, polo flourished. Cowdray Park Polo Club, known as “the home of British polo”, was born in 1910. The club was the epicentre of British polo until the beginning of the First World War. In 1927, Weetman Harold Miller Pearson, 2nd Viscount Cowdray, inherited the property. On his death in 1933, his son, Weetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, inherited everything and continued restoration works on the castle. The 3rd Viscount was passionate about polo, and curiously, was born the year the polo club was founded (1910). Weetman John Churchill Pearson played for Oxford polo team while he completed his studies, winning, among other trophies, The Tyro Cup. He subsequently survived the Second World War, but not without losing an arm during the battle of Dunkirk, France, in 1940. After the war, it was Pearson who encouraged he rebirth of polo in his club. He also continued playing, albeit with an artificial arm which helped him grab the reins. Lord Cowdray travelled to Argentina many times, taking horses over and recruiting several of the most prestigious Argentine players to head to Cowdray. The Viscount was also instrumental in reestablishing the Coronation Cup, originally founded in 1911. In 1956 he founded Cowdray’s most prestigious tournament: The Gold Cup. Lord Pearson was also President of the Hurlingham Polo Association between 1947 and 1967. On his death in 1955, Cowdray Castle was inherited by his son, Michael Orlando Weetman Pearson, 4th Viscount Cowdray, a prominent film producer during the 1960s and 70s (he produced the Rolling Stones 1968 film “Sympathy for the Devil,” among others). Following a major preservation/conservation project in 2006 the ruins were opened to visitors on 31 March 2007. Polo and British history join in a magnificent setting, so when you are watching the high-goal at Cowdray Park Polo Club, don’t forget that Henry VIII used to ride his carriage in these very parks! n
Inglaterra hasta el inicio de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En 1927, Weetman Harold Miller Pearson, hijo del Primer Vizconde de Cowdray, heredó la propiedad, que mantuvo hasta su muerte en 1933, cuando pasó a su hijo, Weetman John Churchill Pearson, Tercer Vizconde de Cowdray, quien a la vez de conitnuar con los trabajos en el castillo, fue un apasionado del polo. Curiosidades del destino, el Tercer Vizconde de Cowdray nació el mismo año que Cowdray Park Polo Club, en 1910. Weetman John Churchill Pearson fue jugador del equipo de Oxford mientras estudiaba allí, y con ellos, ganador, entre otros, de la Tyro Cup. Posteriormente, sirvió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en la que perdió un brazo durante la batalla de Dunkerke, en Francia, en 1940. Una vez finalizada la guerra, y lejos de abandonar su pasión, Pearson siguió jugando al polo con un brazo artificial, especialmente fabricado para él, que lo ayudaba a sostener las riendas. Lord Pearson, fue también Presidente de la Hurlingham Polo Association entre 1947 y 1967. A su muerte, ocurrida en 1995, el Castillo de Cowdray fue heredado por su hijo, Michael Orlando Weetman Pearson, Cuarto Vizconde de Cowdray, quien, además de ser productor cinematográfico a fines de los 60 y principios de los 70 (entre otros, produjo la película de los Rolling Stones, “Sympathy for the Devil”, en 1968), continuó con los intensivos trabajos de conservación y restauración, a través de la creación del Programa Cowdray Heritage Trust, en 1997, que le garantizó a las monumentales ruinas los fondos para una conservación permanente, provenientes de la Heritage Lottery Fund y de diversas donaciones. Finalmente, el lugar fue reabierto al público el 31 de marzo de 2007. La historia de Inglaterra y la historia del polo se mezclan en un lugar único e irresistible. La bocha finally moves in Sotogrande. The 45th International Polo Tournament has already begun, this 2016 battle is for the first time in history part of the Grand Slam category. Dubai defends the win of 2015. For this, a return led by Adolfo Cambiaso was made, number one world wide, who this year will have to make a maximum effort to repeat last year’s success. Brunei, Ayala Polo Team, Lechuza Caracas and Dos Lunas A&G Banca Privada fight to debunk the leading Sotogrande quartet of patron Rashid Albwardy who this year added into this team the Uruguayans Alejo Taranco and Santiago Stirling. It must be highlighted that of the eight players who disputes last years Argentine Open final, six of them are in Sotogrande. Cambiaso, David Stirling Jr., Pablo Mac Donough and Juan Martín Nero, on La Dolfina’s side, and from Ellerstina we have Facundo and Nicolás Pieres. A luxury that few tournaments around the world have. Show is also guaranteed in Medium goal, where the level of competition and headlining stars increase yearly. Twelve teams spread between the Silver Cup and Gold Cup. Low goal, who has already claimed Sotovila as their Bronze cup winner, includes nine teams. In total, twenty-five teams and more than one thousand horses are in Sotogrande, the epicenter of world class polo throughout the whole month of august. n

After playing in Sotogrande 2014, Facu returns to the Santa Maria Polo Club fields seeking out the long awaited Gold Cup defending Ayala Polo Team with the Philippine patron Iñigo Zobel. He does this next to his brother Nicolás after a spectacular 6 months for the Ellerstina player. Facundo just won the US open with Orchard Hill and the Gold Cup with King Power, making him the winner of the two most important trophies of United States and United Kingdom, respectively. Pieres wants to maintain his streak and close the year in the same way with the Argentine Open as his main objective. At the beautiful stables of Ayala Polo Club we had a long and interesting talk, during which Facundo didn’t let any subject pass by and left various headlines. “The first half of the year has been very good. In USA it went very well for us, we won two of three trophies, amongst those was the US Open which is the one we wanted to win and specially the way in which we won. We started the season with lots of bad luck, with Polito (Pieres) who got injured and then we had to put together again the team with Juanma Nero who was in the Dominican Republic and finally everything ended in a spectacular manner. In England something similar happened, we went from less to more, the opposite of last year where we won and played very well throughout the whole season. This year it was like La Indiana, Dubai and Valiente were a little better but luckily we improved as the season progressed and the team showed the best of itself in the last three matches which is when it really matters”, Facundo explains about both seasons.
DID LA INDIANA SHOCK YOU IN THE SEMIFINALS OF THE QUEENS CUP? La Indiana proved to be a very good team and in that match the weather truly didn’t help, it rained a lot and that favored them. On the other hand it was good for us, we realized that we had to improve,
Luego de un año de ausencia, Facu regresa a las canchas de Santa María Polo Club en busca de la ansiada Copa de Oro defendiendo a Ayala Polo Team del patrón filipino Iñigo Zobel. Lo hace junto a su hermano Nicolás y tras una mitad de año espectacular para el jugador de Ellerstina. Facundo viene de ganar el US Open con Orchard Hill y la Gold Cup con King Power los dos torneos más importantes de la temporada de Estados Unidos y Reino Unido respectivamente. Pieres quiere mantener la racha y cerrar de la misma manera lo que resta del año con el Abierto Argentino de Polo como principal objetivo. En las espectaculares cuadras de Ayala Polo Club mantuvimos una larga e interesante charla en la cual Facundo no le escapó a ningún tema y dejó varios titulares. “La primera mitad del año ha sido muy buena. En Estados Unidos nos fue muy bien, ganamos dos copas de tres, entre ellas el US Open que era la que queríamos ganar y sobre todo en la forma en la cual la ganamos. Comenzamos la temporada con mucha mala suerte, con Polito (Pieres) que se nos quebró y luego tuvimos que rearmar el equipo con Juanma Nero que estaba en República Dominicana y al final todo terminó de manera espectacular. En Inglaterra también paso algo similar, fuimos de menor a mayor, al contrario del año pasado que ganamos y jugamos muy bien toda la temporada. Este año parecía que La Indiana, Dubai y Valiente estaban un poco mejor pero por suerte mejoramos con el correr de la temporada y el equipo mostró lo mejor en los últimos tres partidos que es cuando más importa”, explicó Facundo cómo se dieron ambas temporadas.
LOS SORPRENDIÓ LA INDIANA EN LAS SEMIFINALES DE LA QUEENS CUP? Estaba en los papeles perder. La Indiana demostró ser un gran equipo y en ese partido la verdad es que el clima no ayudó, llovió mucho y eso los favoreció más a ellos. Pero por otro lado nos hizo bien, nos dimos cuenta que teníamos que mejorar, ponernos las pilas y que teníamos que jugar muy bien para ganar. Y finalmente así fue. YOU LEVELED YOUR FATHER REGARDING THE NUMBER OF TITLES WON IN THE UK. ARE YOU THE TYPE TO KEEP TRACK OF THE STATISTICS IN YOUR CAREER? I don’t give much attention to the statistics, obviously I care about how many cups I win and I would love to keep winning big titles but the truth is I didn’t even know how many I had.
DOES THE ENDLESS COMPARISON TO ADOLFO CAMBIASO BOTHER YOU? It happens in all sports, it doesn’t bother me, I try not to give it lots of attention and just carry on with my life, I don’t try to be the same as anyone and neither do I play polo to try and level or surpass Adolfo or anyone. I play polo because I like it, I have fun and I enjoy what I do. I like winning, I learn a lot when I loose, I live it like my own and that the way things are going more or less good for me and I want to keep heading down that road. The first years were very tough competing against him (Cambiaso) because apart from being amongst the beat in the sports history he had triple the experience I had at that time. It was hard because out of 10 matches, he beat me in 8 and it was rough to get past that, but it happened when I played against Adolfo, or against the Novillo Astrada in their moment, also some final against Juanma and Pelón, it was always my turn to lose or win and I accepted that ever since I started. As I started to become more experienced the statistics started changing and I started to win more than I lost, and play more finals, give myself the opportunity to win, which is what I always try to do, get to finals and give myself the biggest possible chance at winning.
THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THAT YOUR PLAYING AGAINST EACH OTHER IN ALMOST EVERY FINAL OF TOURNAMENTS ALL AROUND THE WORLD AND THAT FEEDS THE COMPARISON... IGUALASTE A TU PADRE EN CANTIDAD DE TÍTULOS EN UK. SOS DE LLEVAR LA ESTADÍSTICA DE TU CARRERA? No le doy mucha bola (sic) a la estadística, obviamente que sí me importa las copas que gano y me gustaría seguir ganando títulos grandes pero la verdad no sabía cuántos llevaba.
TE MOLESTA LA INTERMINABLE COMPARACIÓN CON ADOLFO CAMBIASO? Pasa en todos los deportes, no me jode. Trato de no darle mucha bola y hago mi vida, no trato de ser igual a nadie y no juego al polo para tratar de igualar o superar a Adolfo o a nadie. Juego al polo porque me gusta, me divierte y disfruto de lo que hago. Me gusta ganar, aprendo mucho cuando pierdo, lo vivo como algo mío y así me parece que vengo más o menos bien y quiero seguir por ese camino. Los primeros años fueron muy jodidos poder competir contra él (Cambiaso) porque además de ser de los mejores de la historia del deporte tenía el triple de experiencia que la que tenía yo en ese momento. Era jodido porque de 10 partidos me ganaba 8 entonces fue bravo superar eso, pero me pasaba contra Adolfo, o contra los Novillo Astrada en su momento, también alguna final contra Juanma y Pelón, siempre me tocó perder y ganar y convivo con ello desde que arranque. A medida que uno fue agarrando experiencia la estadística fue cambiando y empecé a ganar más de lo que perdía, y a estar más en las finales, a darme la posibilidad de ganar que es lo que trato de hacer, llegar a las finales y darme la posibilidad de ganar.
LA REALIDAD ES QUE ESTÁN JUGANDO EN CONTRA EN CASI TODAS LAS FINALES DE LOS TORNEOS DEL MUNDO Y ESO ALIMENTA AÚN MÁS LA COMPRACIÓN, NO ES ASÍ? Pero por ahí pasa más por un tema de organización ya que somos los que mejor organizados estamos, con los mejores patrones y eso influye mucho.
EN ESOS INICIOS, CUANTO PESÓ LA INFLUENCIA DE TU PADRE SIENDO QUIEN ES EN EL MUNDO DEL POLO? Papá es alguien que siempre nos ha enseñado cosas pero más con el ejemplo que con la palabra. Es una persona que no necesitaba venir a decirnos que era lo que teníamos que hacer. Le cuesta mucho trans-
mitir las ideas, lo hace mejor con los hechos que con las palabras. Yo lo fui viendo y aprendiendo durante toda mi vida y me dí cuenta lo importante que fue aprender de él mirándolo. Él nunca me dio un consejo de cómo jugarle a tal o cual equipo o jugador, de cómo manejar la presión. Lo que sí más admiré en él es en cómo organizarse, en las decisiones finales a la hora de comprar un caballo o jugar tal o cual. Su opinión en ese sentido es muy valiosa y la respeto mucho. Pero también tomo el ejemplo de otras personas, como de mi hermano Gonzalo y sobre todo de otros jugadores que veo que juegan muy bien pero que no terminan de despegar. Trato analizar qué cosas les faltan a esos jugadores para hacerlas yo bien. Es difícil copiar a los buenos porque son únicos entonces aprendo más de jugadores que son buenísimos pero por ahí siempre les falta algo para terminar de mejorar o de ganar más. Siempre digo que aprendo mucho más cuando pierdo que cuando gano. Cuando perdés te vas a tu casa y empezás a pensar qué cosas hiciste mal, ves el video del partido una y mil veces, te machacás la cabeza. Cuando ganás es distinto, no miro videos cuando gano.
LA DUPLA CON GONZALITO ES ÉXITO ASEGURADO? Nos ha ido muy bien y nos sentimos muy cómodos jugando juntos. Es díficil jugar en Inglaterra a 22 goles dos jugadores 10 de handicap. Hemos ganado mucho y siempre hemos estado prendidos en los torneos. Ayuda que estamos los dos muy bien organizados de caballos y eso es clave porque jugando dos 10 goles juntos sino estás muy bien de caballos es difícil.
AYALA POLO TEAM Y EL REGRESO A SOTOGRANDE IN THE EARLY BEGINNING, HOW MUCH DID YOUR DADS INFLUENCE, BEING WHO HE IS IN THE POLO WORLD, AFFECT YOU? Dad is someone who has always taught us things but more than through words through example. He is someone who didn’t need to come and tell us what we had to do. Its hard for him to transmit his ideas, he does it better with actions than with words. I saw and learnt this throughout my whole life, and I realized how important it was to learn whilst watching him. He never gave me advice on how to play against what team or player, how to handle the pressure. What I did admire in him was the way in which he organizes himself, the last minute decisions when it comes to buying a horse, playing this one or that one. his opinion in that sense is very valuable, and I respect it a lot. However I also took into consideration other peoples examples, like my brother Gonzalo’s and specially that of other players that I see play very well but never take off. I try to analyze the things that they are missing so I can do them well. Its hard to copy the good ones because their unique so I learn more from the players that are really good but something is always missing for them to improve or win more. I always say I learn more when I loose than when I win. Because when you loose you go home and start to think everything you did wrong, you watch the video one thousand times, you over think. When you win its different, I never watch the videos when I win.
THE PAIR YOU FORM WITH GONZALITO IS ASSURED SUCCESS? We have done very well and we feel very at ease playing together. It’s hard for two 10 goal handicaps to play in England at 22 goals. We won a lot and always seized in the tournaments. It helps that we are both very organized with horses and that’s key because playing 10 goals together if your not prepared horse wise is very difficult.
AYALA POLO TEAM AND THE RETURN TO SOTOGRANDE Facundo returns this season to Sotogrande after a year of absence and he does it dressed in the Ayala Polo Team’s t-shirt, with the team’s Patron Iñigo Zobel, along with his own brother Nicolás with whom its been a few seasons since he plays abroad.
Facundo regresó esta temporada a Sotogrande tras un año de ausencia y lo hace vistiendo la camiseta de Ayala Polo Team, el equipo del patrón Iñigo Zobel, y junto a su hermano Nicolás con quien hace varias temporadas que no juega en el exterior. “La posibilidad de jugar para Ayala surge tras una llamada de Iñigo Zobel durante la temporada Argentina. Me dijo que quería jugar conmigo y armar un equipo competitivo, fuimos viendo las opciones y la verdad que con Nico nos había ido bien en Sotogrande, jugando para Ellerston y hace varios años que no jugabamos juntos afuera. Me divertía armar este proyecto y darnos la posibilidad de ganar con Ayala. Nico también necesita sentirse ganador y estar peleando por las copas. Nico está muy bien organizado en Inglaterra y trajo sus caballos para acá y eso es muy importante ya un 8 o 9 goles bien montado es clave. Esta temporada los caballos van a hacer la diferencia porque son 5 equipos y todos muy buenos. Está para cualquiera, será para el que mejor funcione como equipo y mejor le funcionen los caballos. Coincidió que entraba un 3 goles que es Jack Hyde que viene de hacer una gran temporada en Dubai donde ganó con UAE Polo y también en Inglaterra. Se armó un equipo muy fuerte y espero podamos competir bien.
“The possibility of playing for Ayala surged after a phone call from Iñigo Zobel during the Argentine season. He told me he wanted to play with me and set up a competitive team, we starting looking at all the options and the truth is that it had gone very well for me and Nico in Sotogrande, playing for Ellerston and it has been a while since we played together away. It was fun to set up this project and give us the possibility to win for Ayala. Nico also needs to feel like a winner and fight for the cups. Nico is very well organized in England and brought his horses here and that’s very important, for an 8 or 9 goaler to be well mounted is key. This season the horses will make all the difference because there are 5 teams and they are all very good. Its for the taking, it will be about who works best as a team and whose horses are better. It coincided that a 3 goaler entered that is Jack Hyde, who just played a great season in Dubai where he won with UAE Polo and also in England. A very strong team was formed and I hope we can compete well.
ES PREOCUPANTE LA REALIDAD DE SOTOGRANDE?

SE SIGUE HABLANDO MUCHO DE CAMBIOS EN EL POLO PERO ES POCO LO QUE SE ESTÁ HACIENDO, COINCIDÍS?
Yes of course its worrying, a few years ago there were 12 teams and now 5, I think something must change. Its been a while since I came to Sotogrande and I have heard of things being done badly, that teams aren´t returning because they had problems with the organization, the referees, that they didn’t feel comfortable, problems with the fixture, a badly organized tournament. I think the organization must take responsibility and do it well if they don’t want the tournament to disappear. This place is unique, for the month of August it is the best place, with the best fields, nevertheless many teams don’t want to come, and that means something is going wrong. Add to this the worldwide polo crisis where there are less patrons all around the world and as a result less teams. Also there is more competition now, it’s not just Deauville anymore, but also St. Tropez is making a big effort and thats why I think in the case of Sotogrande it’s a mix between the overall crisis and that fact that things aren’t being done properly and they must improve.
THERE IS LOTS OF TALK ABOUT THE CHANGES IN POLO BUT LITTLE IS BEING DONE, DO YOU AGREE? We talk about changes and for things to be done. The issue of refereeing was the first thing we spoke about, that they are calling many fouls, that ‘redondillas’ are being called to often, and that advantage
Si claro que es preocupante, hace unos años había 12 equipos y ahora 5, creo que algo hay que cambiar. Hace dos años que no vengo a Sotogrande y he escuchado que se han hecho cosas mal, que hay equipos que no vuelven porque tuvieron problemas con la organización, con referís, que no se sintieron cómodos, problemas con los fixture, torneo mal organizado. Creo que la organización se tiene que hacer cargo y lo tiene que hacer bien sino quieren que el torneo desaparezca. Este lugar es único, para el mes de agosto es el mejor lugar, con las mejores canchas y sin embargo hay muchos equipos que no quieren venir, entonces algo mal hay. Eso se suma a la crisis que hay en el polo mundial donde hay menos patrones en todos lados y por ende menos equipos. También hay más competencia porque ahora en Agosto no sólo es Deauville, también está St. Tropez haciendo fuerza por eso creo que el caso de Sotogrande es una mezcla de crisis general y de cosas que no se han hecho bien y que hay que mejorar.
Venimos hablando de cambios y que se hagan cosas. El tema del referato fue de lo primero que se hablo, que los árbitros estaban cobrando mucho, que las redondillas se estaban cobrando demasiado, que se está dando ventaja al jugador que demora el juego, que se le da ventaja al jugador que toca la pelota en vez de pegarle, etc. El ejemplo de la final de la Gold Cup, con los jueces permitiendo jugar más, es por donde se tiene que empezar. Los árbitros dejaron jugar y el resultado fue positivo. Se benefició el espectáculo, el juego y los jugadores. Se habla mucho de volver al polo de antes y la única manera de volver a ese polo es que los jueces cobren la mitad de lo que están cobrando. Creo que por ahí va el mayor cambio de todos los que se están hablando. Después hay otros aspectos que hay que ir viendo y modificando pero la clave pasa primero por los jueces y no cobrar tanto. Se hizo en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra y habría que hacerlo en Sotogrande que son los mismos jueces que en Argentina para terminar de aplicarlo allá.

It’s what we have just been talking about, for example the problem of organization in Sotogrande happens because of a lack of professionalism, of thinking before taking a decision, about how the tournament will be, the fixture, really thinking about it. So that it doesn’t happen that out of 8 teams 6 are struggling. That means your doing something wrong and these things shouldn’t happen. I’m also insisting on changes in Argentina, Palermo needs to be a more popular event, a show. It has the best place in the world to play polo and its not at all being exploited. Fill the streets of Buenos Aires promoting the Open and the final, attract more media, lead up TV shows, TV programs, promote the event better.
ARE THE PLAYERS BEING LISTENED TO? Yes, the problem is nobody dared to talk. After I went out to talk and said what I thought many others followed to talk and that is amazing. What happened was exactly that, all of them, gravely or not, had the same opinion but nobody said anything. Now luckily things are being said. That’s why I admire when new things are being done like what Javier Tanoira is doing will All Pro Polo. He’s of the few people that has had the courage and that does so to try and improve polo, not for his own benefit. That’s what we have to look at, those who want polo to improve, add to it. His whole family has been related to polo and to him it’s a shame to see what is happening. He was of the few who an-

Empapelar la ciudad de Buenos Aires promocionando el Abierto y la final, convocar a más medios, hacer móviles previos, programas de tv, promocionar mejor el evento.
A LOS JUGADORES SE LOS ESCUCHA? Sí, el problema es que nadie se animaba a hablar. Después de que salí a hablar y dije lo que pensaba salieron a hablar muchos otros y eso está buenísimo. Lo que pasaba era eso, que todos, en mayor o menor medida, opinamos igual pero nadie lo decía. Ahora por suerte sí se dicen las cosas. Por eso admiro mucho cuando se hacen cosas nuevas como lo que está haciendo Javier Tanoira con el All Pro Polo. Es de los pocos que se ha animado y lo hace para mejorar el polo, no para beneficio propio. Eso es lo que tenemos que mirar, él quiere que el polo mejore, quiere sumar, mejorar. Toda su familia ha estado ligada al polo y a él le da lástima ver lo que está pasando. Fue de los poco que anticipó que veníamos por mal camino. Una de las cosas que se pueden hacer, y los jugadores podemos ayudar mucho, es que no sólo se le de importancia al ganador de la Copa de Oro. Que la Copa de Plata, Bronce o Subsidiaria vuelvan a ser importantes como lo fueron hace unos años. Ahora es la Copa de Oro o el fracaso y en eso tenemos mucha culpa los jugadores que se lo fuimos inculcando a los patrones Se desvalorizó todo, en Inglaterra la Prince of Wales, la Workshire, que desaparecieron y que antes se mataban por ganarla, en Sotogrande la Copa de Bronce, la Copa de Plata. Ahora sólo se quiere ganar la Copa de la Reina y la Copa de Oro en UK o en Sotogrande. Es culpa de los jugadores que vamos inculcando a los patrones nuevos a ganar y ganar y la realidad es que solamente gana uno. Es díficil, pero creo nosotros, los jugadores, tenemos que empezar con los cambios. Volver a jugar como antes, llevar a los patrones a lo de antes, a divertirnos un poco más, a compartir más cosas, se puso todo muy profesional y las organizaciones están muy competitivas. Ya no te juntás con otra organización, sería lindo que se pueda com-

ticipated that we were going down the wrong path. One of the things that can be done, and us the players can help out a lot, is that there isn’t only importance on the winner of the Gold Cup. That the Silver, Bronze, and subsidiary cups become as important as they were a few years back. Now it’s the Gold Cup or failure and in that us the players have lots of blame we were the ones to inculcate the patrons. Everything has been devalued, in England the ‘Prince of Wales’, the ‘Workshire’ all disappeared and we used to kill to win them, in Sotogrande the Bronze Cup, the Silver Cup. Now only the Queens Cup or the Gold Cup in UK or Sotogrande want to be won. It’s the player’s fault for inculcating the new patrons with the idea of winning and winning, when in reality there is only one winner. Its hard, but I think that we, the players must start with the changed. Start playing like we used to, take the patrones back to what Is used to be, have a little bit more fun, share more things, everything became very professional and the organizations are very competitive. You don’t join other organizations anymore, it would be nice if we could share a barbeque with another team, different patrons, that one team likes sharing things with the other and vice versa, go back to all that. IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE TOP TEN TO SIT DOWN ON A TABLE TO TALK? There should exist an association of players with power for this to happen. Its hard and you have to be honest also. In my case I’m in the middle of my professional career, constantly competing and to leave that to get together in one place or another to talk, something I already did in England and USA, you get pulled out of focus and that is something we can´t permit ourselves. That’s why I think that those who must do this are the others, the ones that are finishing their career and have important opinions. Eduardo Heguy is someone who could achieve this and is very into the players association.
ARGENTINE SEASON 2016–W Last year everything was new for Ellerstina, the team, the positions, me playing as number 4 which was the first time I did that in Argentina, new horses, Mariano as our coach and this way the whole team did very well and that’s what I see as positive. There is lots to improve still regarding the season to come and if we do so the possibilities of winning will be larger. Last year we were about to beat La Dolfina in Tortugas and Hurlingham but it wasn’t the case of the final of the Open where they played a lot better. They had just had a weak season and in the Palermo final they played their best match yet in the whole season for that you can never give up. It’s good to learn this and take it as an experience. This played in our disadvantage as we entered the Open final not being at 100%. We suspected due to previous event and by how they arrived, that we would have a chance to beat them but they played the match in such an impressive way and they beat us well, only by one goal, but they beat us well. It’s true that was painful, we had various meetings, lots of projects and new ideas, the way of working, of doing things, the practices, the changes of position, which is something that is still taking some getting used to. We are still looking for our exact positions and this is key. They (La Dolfina) have very defined positions and we don’t, when we find them; this is when the team will start to play very good. Lastly, when consulting whether Mariano Aguerre will remain as the coach of Ellerstina, Facundo confirmed that this would be case and that last year his election as coach was natural “he stopped playing and if he wasn’t going to play on any team we obviously wanted him by our side. Besides we respect his opinion a great deal, he is an intelligent player and has a very good head. n

En mi caso estoy en el medio de mi carrera profesional, compitiendo a full y salirme de esto para juntarme acá o allá para hablar, cosa que hice ya en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra, te va sacando del foco y tampoco podemos permitirnoslo. Por eso creo que los que tienen que hacerlo son otros, los que están terminando su carrera y son opiniones de peso. Eduardo Heguy es alguien que puede lograr eso y está muy metido con la Asociación de Jugadores.
TEMPORADA ARGENTINA 2016 El año pasado fue todo nuevo para Ellerstina, el equipo, las posiciones, jugando yo de 4 que era la primera vez que lo hacía en Argentina, caballos nuevos, Mariano como coach y así y todo el equipo anduvo muy bien y eso es lo que yo veo como positivo. Hay mucho para mejorar todavía de cara a la temporada que viene y si lo hacemos las posibilidades de ganar van a ser mayores. El año pasado a La Dolfina estuvimos a punto de ganarle en Tortugas y Hurlingham pero no fue el caso de la final del Abierto donde ellos jugaron mucho mejor. Ellos venían de una temporada floja y en la final de Palermo jugaron el mejor partido de la temporada por eso nunca los podés dar por muertos. Eso está bueno aprenderlo y tomarlo como experiencia. Nos jugó un poco en contra porque no entramos a jugar la final del Abierto al 100%. Sospechamos por antecedentes previos y por cómo venían ellos, que teníamos chances de ganarle pero ellos salieron a jugar el partido de forma impresionante y nos ganaron bien, por un gol cierto, pero nos ganaron bien. Es cierto que nos dolió mucho, tuvimos varias reuniones, muchos proyectos e ideas nuevas, la manera de trabajar, de hacer las cosas, las prácticas, los cambios de puesto, que es algo que todavía nos está costando. Todavía estamos buscando un puesto y eso es clave. Ellos (La Dolfina) tienen los puestos muy definidos y nosotros no, donde los encontremos ahí el equipo va a andar muy bien. Por último, ante la consulta de sí Mariano Aguerre seguirá como coach en Ellerstina, Facundo confirmó que así será y que el año pasado su nombramiento se dio naturalmente, “dejó de jugar y si no iba a estar en ningún equipo queríamos que obviamente esté junto a nostros. Además respetamos mucho su opinión, es un jugador muy inteligente y piensa muy bien”. n

The All Pro Polo League (APPL) arrived in Sotogrande to dispute the attractive tournament on the Santa Maria Polo Club’s fields, in which four teams were part with players of the highest level such as Alejo Taranco, Nicolás Espain, Martín Iturraspe and Santiago Laborde amongst others. This attractive project that was set up last year by Javier Tanoira has the objective of taking polo back to its glory years by encouraging dynamic and open playing, by motivating a professional attitude towards the sport. The APPL was presented this season in USA and England and stopped off in Sotogrande for the first time with high expectations, which, according to the founder, were met 100%. “Before arriving to Sotogrande and organizing the event I had my doubts about the possibility of the success the tournament could have” Tanoira explains. “It happened to us in Palm Beach and England that those playing high and medium goal have a busy agenda and sometimes the patrones don’t want to lend the horses or don’t want them to play. Or those who don’t have a job don’t have the money to rent the horses to play. But luckily a good tournament was set up, with teams made up by a somewhat older generation compared to those who player in Argentina or England which was also a major challenge. 42 m H10 POLO BY LA BOCHA m ALL PRO POLO
La Liga All Pro Polo League (APPL) aterrizó en Sotogrande para disputar un atractivo torneo en las canchas de Santa María Polo Club del cual formaron parte cuatro equipos con jugadores de primer nivel como Alejo Taranco, Nicolás Espain, Martín Iturraspe y Santiago Laborde entre otros. Este atractivo proyecto, que nació el año pasado de la mano de Javier Tanoira, tiene como objetivo llevar el polo a sus días de gloria fomentando el juego dinámico y abierto y motivando una actitud profesional hacia este deporte. La APPL se presentó esta temporada en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra y desembarcó en Sotogrande por primera vez con muchas expectativas, las cuáles, según palabras de su fundador, fueron colmadas a un 100%. “Antes de llegar a Sotogrande y empezar a organizar el evento tenía mis dudas sobre el poder de convocatoria que podía tener el torneo”, explica Tanoira. “Nos había pasado en Palm Beach e Inglaterra que los chicos que están organizados están jugando el Alto y el Mediano y a veces los patrones no les prestan los caballos o no quieren que jueguen al tiempo que los que están sin trabajo no tienen la plata para alquilar caballos para jugar. Pero por suerte se armó un torneo muy bueno, con equipos integrados por una generación de polistas de mayor edad comparado con los que jugaron en Argentina e Inglaterra lo cual también fue todo un desafío. Por suerte salió muy bueno y jugadores muy buenos, que están verdaderamente profesionalizados,

Regarding his project, the one we broadcast and will continue to do so in this edition, Tanoira explains that “It’s the first time for me on board a start-up from scratch and as long as I keep clear in my head the reasons for which I am doing this, I will continue to do it with all my strength. This is not being done for a personal or commercial reason simply for the benefit of polo. I was raised and educated playing and watching polo. I was a completely normal polo player who retired at 33 years of age because polo bored me, but what I will always remain until my death, is a polo spectator. And there are many of us who complete this roll and that’s what I am targeting, giving the spectator a good spectacle. I’m an active spectator that got involved because I wanted to change what I was watching. When I realized that I didn’t like what I was watching I set myself the goal to do something so that I would sit down and watch polo. I’m not alone, there are many spectators who think the same”. Concerning the question whether his project looks to “kill the goose who lays the golden eggs”, Tanoira replies frankly “I am a result of that goose! My old man was one of the first to be a professional and clubs like Hurlingham and Tortugas wanted to get rid of him for bringing in a patron and he supposedly got money to play. It was he who opened the way, so hardly, I, who am a result of this, can go against it. Nothing could be further from the truth than wanting to take the patrons off the field, what is taking the patrons of the field is the current model of polo that is constantly requiring more money and the pa-

Que no está hecho con ningún fin personal ni comercial sino por el bien del polo. Me críe y me eduqué jugando y viendo polo. Fui un jugador de polo absolutamente normal que se retiró a los 33 años porque le aburría el polo pero lo que seré, hasta que me muera, es espectador de polo. Y somos un montón que cumplimos ese rol y ahí es donde yo apunto, darle al espectador un buen espectáculo. Soy un espectador activo, que se involucró porque trato de cambiar lo que estaba mirando. Cuando me dí cuenta que lo que veía no me gustaba me propuse hacer algo para volver a sentarme a mirar polo. Y no soy el único, hay un montón de espectadores que piensan lo mismo”. Ante la consulta si su proyecto busca “matar la gallina de los huevos de oro”, Tanoira responde con franqueza, “yo soy un resultado de esa gallina! Mi Viejo fue uno de los primeros en hacerse profesional y lo echaban de clubes como Tortugas y Hurlingham por traer un patrón y se suponía que cobraba plata para jugar. Fue el que abrío camino, entonces dificilmente yo, que soy un resultado de eso, vaya en contra. El problema que esa gallina cada vez pone menos huevos, y para cada vez menos gente. Esa gallina está vieja...el modelo está agotado, porque durante 35 años todos fuimos funcionales a esa gallina, que eran los patrones, y descuidamos el espectáculo, o en todo caso vimos como se iba deteriorando el juego y no fuimos capaces de hacer nada. Para seguir con la metáfora, hay que criar una gallina nueva, que ponga más huevos para más gente, y esto no quiere decir que hay que sacar los patrones de la cancha...primero de todo, tenemos que hacer que ALL PRO POLO m H10 POLO BY LA BOCHA m 43

The definition of reactionary is one who changes things for things not to change and thats what I want, make changes so it doesn’t change”, he explains. Tanoira insists that the All Pro Polo League is a project open to everyone. “We’re conscious of the fact that for the high goal players it is hard to play due to calendar issues but they’re welcome to participate in any way they can and want. It’s an open project, where everyone is invited to help and participate, propose ideas. In fact in this Sotogrande experience a change of a rule was suggested by a player just before the start of the tournament. And this change was very positive. That is the essence of All Pro Polo”. The next objective of All Pro Polo is to organize a competitive tournament in Argentina in November with really good prizes and sponsors and for 2017 to repeat the edition in USA, England and Sotogrande. Tanoira is conscious that now the great challenge will be to bring it from a test round to results. “I’m very happy with the first round, it was experimental, now we have to leave the laboratory and turn it into a hard reality. If we are successful and create a working alternative to help polo we will be happy”. n

Es un proyecto abierto, donde todos están invitados a sumar y participar, proponer ideas. De hecho en esta experiencia de Sotogrande se cambio una regla por sugerencia de un jugador antes de iniciar el torneo. Y fue muy positivo el cambio. Esa es la escencia de All Pro Polo”. El próximo objetivo del All Pro Polo es hacer un torneo competitivo en Argentina en noviembre con muy buenos premios y sponsors y para el 2017 repetir en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Sotogrande. Tanoira es consciente que ahora el gran desafío es pasar del ensayo al resultado. “Estoy muy contento con la primera etapa, que fue de experimentación, ahora hay que salir del laboratorio y convertirse en una realidad firme. Si somos exitosos y creamos una alternativa laboral para ayudar al polo estaremos felices”. n

At the beginning of April the HPA announced that, as of this season, one set of rules will be used by the three leading polo associations: AAP, HPA and USPA. While players of varying levels (high, medium and low-goal) were in favour of the unification of rules, the general reply, especially from the two leading players in the world, was: “They don't ask us anything” (Facundo Pieres) and “I wasn't asked about it, no-one was” (Adolfo Cambiaso). PoloLine decided to ask players what they think about the unification of rules, and what rule they would modify if they had the chance. The responses were varied: Twelve different topics were discussed, including the game, umpires, handicaps, patrons, rule changes, and institutional and legal questions. The following is an open letter to the polo community. Most of all, several players implored those who have the power to make changes to put collective needs before personal ones. PoloLine understands that there has been a problem in polo for a while, on a global scale, and this is a good time for the polo community (regardless of country or level) to give their point of view and offer potential solutions to the problem. This is a starting point, and it is up to each of us to ensure its evolution.
Durante los primeros días de Abril la HPA anunció que a partir de la presente temporada inglesa se pasaría a implementar un único reglamento para las 3 Asociaciones de las 3 principales potencias del mundo del polo: Argentina, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. Y si bien la respuesta de los jugadores de los distintos niveles (alto, mediano y bajo) ante la consulta de PoloLine fue positiva acerca de la unificación del reglamento, una de las respuestas más recibidas -incluyendo la de los dos jugadores más destacados- fue un contundente: “No nos consultan nada” (Facundo Pieres), o “A mí tampoco me consultan, ni a mí ni a ninguno” (Adolfo Cambiaso). La consigna planteada por parte de Pololine a cada uno de los consultados fue no sólo acerca de su posición con respecto a la mencionada unificación, sino además acerca de qué ley, norma, procedimiento o regla modificarían si tuvieran la posibilidad. Hubo propuestas y posiciones de las más variadas: 12 diferentes tópicos entre dinámica del juego, arbitraje, hándicaps, patrones, cambios drásticos de algunas reglas, cuestiones institucionales y hasta legales concluyen en una carta abierta a toda la comunidad del polo. Por último, el pedido de varios actores para que aquéllos que estén en posición de hacerlo pongan los intereses colectivos por delante de los personales. PoloLine entiende que ya hace un tiempo hay una problemática a nivel mundial en el polo y que es un buen momento para que la comunidad de este deporte (independientemente del país o nivel del involucrado) en su totalidad aporte su punto de vista y sus potenciales soluciones para sacar esta situación adelante. Siendo este el puntapié inicial, de cada uno de los que formamos parte depende la evolución del mismo.

They try to make fun of the Argentines. I think that if we change to one set of rules, it should be to follow Argentina's example, honestly. Otherwise nothing should be changed.”
“Las reglas de Argentina están bien; creo que los que más se adaptaron a todos los reglamentos fueron los de USA, sin lugar a dudas. Y los ingleses siempre juegan para ellos: desde el bajo, mediano y alto hándicap. Tratan de embromar a los argentinos. Yo creo que para cambiar una regla, hay que seguir a Argentina, honestamente; si no, no hagan nada, esa es la verdad”.
Facundo Pieres “There are no big changes made, just certain things about when to blow a foul. To improve the sport, the rules need to be changed; they have not changed in polo in a long time. Changing the rules would imply more drastic changes, regarding throw-ins, umpires - stronger changes that alter the sport. They are the changes we need to apply in order to improve.”

A. THROW-IN Facundo Pieres “The biggest change I would make is eliminating throw-ins. There should only be one at the beginning of the game and at the beginning of each chukker, if the ball was in play at the end of the chukker. That would mean there would be a parallel stopwatch. One stopwatch begins when the ball goes out or when someone scores a goal. And there needs to be a time limit on hit-ins (so no time wasting is allowed and one cannot hit-in too quickly, either). Chukkers would therefore be five or six minutes long. When an umpire blows a foul and they make a mistake, or they don't agree, they should give the ball to the team who last had possession so as not to disadvantage them.”

I want to see Facundo and Cambiaso go head to head on a run, without any other lower handicapped player, an amateur, blocking them. I want to see Federer against Nadal, Djokovic against Wawrinka. This is the most important rule we have to change in polo.”

The military have 30% of the vote to elect the President. I ask: What military has a handicap higher than three goals? Also, imagine that you get suspended from a game in the Open and you want to appeal. Do you know who you have to appeal to? The Assembly, which is held in May the following year. Rather than say we are following the rules established in the 1970s, I would say that we are following the regulations put in place in the 1930s.”

And in the low goal we need to think about how we can get patrons to get involved with the clubs; we need to make them a fun place. That is what we are missing. People always used to stay in the club after the games, and they don't any more.”

In the UK they are making things impossible for Argentines, and the AAP and the Association of Players do nothing about it.”

Pite Merlos continues to travel to the best clubs in the world. Over his career he has won the Argentine Open, The Gold Cup, and has reached 10-goal status, to name a few achievements. And, luckily for us, he has never distanced himself from polo. Not only did he advise and share his experiences with Michael Bickford’s La Indiana during their successful English campaign, but he shared his point of view clearly during transmissions of the last Argentine Open Championship. A few weeks ago he also played the final of the Eduardo Moore Cup against his son, Juan Cruz. His experience has been the basis of his concepts, an established vision which explains what polo needs to grow. The Argentine, originally from Trenque Lauquen, spoke to PoloLine about his ideas. “Polo in general is ill,” stated Merlos. “However, I don’t think it is a terminal illness. But we are lacking teams, patrons, amateurs. This was clear in the Argentine Gold Cup and in the US Open. We have forgotten how we started playing polo. Polo is a four man game, and it should be played in pairs. Today polo is no longer a team sport; it has become a game of egos. The good players choose teammates that will make them stand out, instead of helping those younger players improve. They chose players who are physically stronger and only teach them to block. We are now faced with a big structure problem: not every amateur can spend enough time playing polo so as to be efficient blockers. So many rules are being changed to get the ball away from the good guys that the only rule that is part of the book and is not implemented is the one which states that 2 vs 1 cannot happen. Generally, when we played at the farm, and two players faced one, it was a foul. Once two players are challenging, there cannot be a third payer; that is the healthiest rule.”
Pite Merlos sigue paseando su polo por las mejores canchas del mundo. Ha ganado el Abierto Argentino, la Gold Cup, ha sido 10 de hándicap, entre otras proezas, a lo largo de su carrera profesional. Pero, por suerte para el polo, nunca se ha alejado del deporte. No sólo le ha brindado toda su experiencia a La Indiana durante la exitosa temporada inglesa que ha tenido el equipo de Michael Bickford, sino que además ha aportado sus comentarios claros y precisos a las transmisiones televisivas durante la disputa del último Abierto Argentino. Además, se ha dado el lujo hace un par de semanas de compartir la final de la Copa Eduardo Moore con su hijo Juan Cruz, aunque fue como rivales (Victoria para Juan Cruz). A partir de esa claridad en los conceptos, y de una visión establecida acerca de lo que necesita el polo para crecer, el de Trenque Lauquen habló con Pololine y dejó varios títulos. “El Polo en general está enfermo. No creo que este enfermo terminal: hay falta de equipos, de patrones, de amateurs; pasó en la Copa de Oro en Argentina, en el US Open. Nos estamos olvidando un poco cómo aprendimos a jugar al polo todos. Se juega de a 4, se juega en parejas, digamos. Hoy en día ha dejado de ser un deporte en equipo y ha pasado a ser un deporte más de egos. Los jugadores buenos eligen compañeros donde a ellos los hagan jugar más del hándicap que tienen, en vez de elegir jugadores que puedan potenciar para que jueguen mejor. Se eligen jugadores físicamente más fuertes, donde solo se les enseña a bloquear. Pasamos a tener un problema de estructura grande: no todos los amateurs pueden dedicarle tanto tiempo al deporte para ser eficientes en el bloqueo, etc. Se están cambiando tantas reglas para sacarle la pelota a los buenos, que la única regla que está dentro del reglamento y no se impone es que el 2 vs 1 no puede existir. Generalmente, cuando jugábamos en el campo, y quedaban dos contra uno, era foul. Una vez que estén dos jugadores challenging no puede haber un tercero; esa es la regla más saludable”, afirma.

“Juan Carlos Harriott described polo in a very simple way. He used to say: “The day that you are going faster than the ball, you have to stop and think, because you are making a mistake.’ What does that mean? That every player used to get the ball and hit it. Times have changes. Today winning is very important; the player who wins more has more work, like in all sports. Possession is a primal instinct, it’s basic and understandable. You are allowed to have the ball. It is great if you have two 10-goalers going head to head. Whoever has the best horse or greater skills will win. But when you add a third player who is risking a lot, because generally that third player is not playing the best horses, then polo is no longer safe. The rules exist so as to make polo as safe a sport as it can be. So there are things we have to change.”
Y completa: “Juan Carlos Harriott describía al polo muy simple, decía: ‘el día que vos andes más ligero que lo que anda la pelota, tenés que replantearte, porque estás equivocado’. ¿Qué significaba eso? Que cada jugador llegaba y le pegaba. Los tiempos han cambiado. Hoy es muy importante ganar, el que más gana tiene mas trabajo, como en todos los deportes. La posesión es primordial, es básica, es entendible; es legal que vos tengas la pelota. Pasa que si vos tenés mano a mano un 10 goles con otro 10 goles, buenísimo: que gane el que tenga mejor yegua, el que esté más inspirado en ese momento. Cuando vos tengas que meter a un tercero tomando riesgos, asumiendo riesgos, porque, por lo general, ese tercero no está ni preparado ni con mejor caballo, pasa a ser no safe. Las reglas están para que sea un deporte lo menos peligroso posible. Ahí hay algo que tenemos que cambiar”.
WHAT ROLE DO THE BEST PLAYERS HAVE TO TAKE ON FOR POLO TO CHANGE?
¿QUÉ PAPEL TENDRÍAN QUE CUMPLIR LOS GRANDES JUGADORES PARA QUE EL POLO CAMBIE?
For polo to grow we need more humility and generosity from the players that today dominate the sport. I don’t think you can ask much more from them than what they already give. They provide endless work opportunities (for players, grooms, personal trainers, embryos, clones, breeders, etc.). But it would be good to create a project or a plan, and for them to help us generate ideas and think of ways in which we can help players who are suffering in low and medium goal tournaments. I don’t think they have time to come up with something like that, but they can support the project. They are busy looking after their patrons, finding the best mare, and resting in time for the next tournament. They play twelve months a year. Facundo spoke up and some things changed. Only the best can generate those changes.
Se necesita una gran humildad y una gran generosidad de los jugadores que hoy dominan el polo para que el polo crezca. No creo que uno les pueda pedir más cosas que las que ellos ya generan. Brindan un sinfín de posibilidades de trabajo (jugadores, petiseros, físicos, embriones, clones, domadores, etc). Pero sí crear un proyecto, un plan para convencerlos, que nos ayude a generar ideas para defender o darle un empujón a los jugadores nuevos que están surfeándola en el mediano y bajo. No creo que ellos tengan tiempo para generarlo, pero sí para ser la punta de lanza de un proyecto mejorado. Ellos están tratando de atender a sus patrones, de conseguir la mejor yegua y hasta de descansar, ya que juegan 12 meses al año. Facundo habló y cambiaron algunas cosas; éso lo generan los número 1.

YOU ONCE SAID THAT WE NEEDED TO BE MORE SUPPORTIVE TOWARDS THE LOSERS. WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?
UNA VEZ DIJISTE QUE HABÍA QUE SER MÁS SOLIDARIO CON EL QUE PERDÍA, ¿A QUÉ TE REFERÍAS?
Handicaps always bring problems. You have players with the same handicap, but with different ages, or handicaps that manage to find loopholes and take advantage of the system. The objective is to help young players, who do not have any structure, improve. But those changes should not be so tough on those who lose. The big changes always come about because of players with doubtful handicaps in big teams that are used to winning. I think we should give whoever loses a bit of a break. Tournaments are made up of teams who lose; only one team wins, while all the rest lose.
DO YOU LIKE THE NEW FORMAT THAT THE OPEN IS GOING TO HAVE THIS SEASON? Every change causes fear and suspicion. I like this format, even though I think it favors some more than others. I have heard that it has been decided once that all the teams had been listed. Maybe the protocol wasn’t followed, but, what is true, is that this change has been implemented for the good of everyone, for the spectacle. Hopefully it works. I like the system of classifying for next year; it motivates me that they protect the idea of teams being able to stay together for some time. And to play well and win would give you that right, and not like the handicaps, that many times are unfair or subjective. The career of Juan Ignacio Merlos as a player is far from over, today he gives us the pleasure of knowing that for a while already he has started a new phase in his career, that of coach. Regarding the subject, he highlights that “I think that there are two things yet to evolve: coaching and leaders. The joy I have being coach of La Indiana must come from seeing that work causes objective to be reached that at first seemed so far. That’s when there starts to be confidence, individuals open up. The work is simple: ensure that they trust themselves, find a system in which they create, adjust it systematically on the field with different situation previously studied, and pressure them when most needed. There are teams with small expectations that in the end achieved a very good season, like Clarke & Green, HB, and also La Indiana. These teams have sent a message to polo in general: with planning, the right selection of combinations and projects, you have a good season.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE WORK PERMIT SITUATION IN THE UK? WHAT ROLE SHOULD THE AAP TAKE ON? SHOULD THERE BE SOME FORM OF RECIPROCITY? First there were community passports, then the rule that said you had to have started playing in the UK to take part, so basically you had to be 0-goals to be eligible. Then the asterisk rule. There have been so many rules! It is exhausting, and many of the medium goal players can’t meet all the requirements. We [in Argentina] always prided ourselves in being the leaders of polo, with the best horses, players, fields, etc. But, on the other hand, we are losing ground everywhere. There are less and less players that can one day replace the best we have now, less horses are being bought from our lands, and even those grooming and working with horses now stay in Europe. People try to find horses here [in Europe]. This is all a strategy which gives them

Los hándicaps siempre traerán problemas. Tenés jugadores con el mismo hándicap, pero mucha diferencia de edad; otras promesas que se destapan; y otros hándicaps pícaros que le encuentran la vuelta al sistema y sacan ventajas. La habilidad sigue siendo lograr que los jugadores jóvenes sin estructura puedan jugar cada vez mejor por un sistema, o por caballos a los que no se habían subido nunca antes. Pero todos esos cambios deben ser más benévolos para los que pierden. Siempre los cambios importantes, o el tablero de pases, lo generan los jugadores de hándicap dudosos para equipos grandes, que están acostumbrados a ganar. Y, para mí, hay que darles un respiro a los que pierden. Los torneos los hacen los equipos que pierden: sólo uno gana y el resto pierde.
¿TE GUSTA EL NUEVO FORMATO QUE VA A TENER EL ABIERTO EN ESTA TEMPORADA? Todo cambio genera miedo o suspicacias. Este formato me gusta, aunque creo que favorece a algunos más que a otros. He escuchado que se decidió una vez que los equipos estaban anotados. Quizás el protocolo no se siguió, pero, lo que sí, este cambio se hace por el bien de todos, por el espectáculo. Ojalá funcione. El sistema de clasificación para el año siguiente me gusta; me entusiasma que se proteja la cuestión de que los equipos puedan seguir juntos por un tiempo. Y que jugar bien y ganar te daría ese derecho, y no los hándicaps, que muchas veces no son justos u objetivos. Si bien la carrera de Juan Ignacio Merlos como jugador está lejos de finalizar, hoy se da el gusto de haber inaugurado una nueva faceta en su vida, hace ya un tiempo, que es la de coach. Al respecto, destaca: “Pienso que hay dos cosas que pueden evolucionar todavía: el coaching y los dirigentes. La alegría que tengo de ser coach de La Indiana se da al ver que los trabajos van logrando objetivos que al principio estaban lejísimos. Entonces, empieza a haber confianza, empiezan a abrirse a uno. El trabajo es simple: lograr que confíen en ellos mismos, encontrar un sistema en el que crean, ajustarlo sistemáticamente en la cancha con distintos planes ya estudiados y sacarles presión cuando las papas queman. Hay equipos con expectativas chicas que lograron una buena temporada, como Clarke & Green, HB, además de La Indiana. Estos equipos han mandado un mensaje al polo en general: con planificación, elección correcta de las combinaciones y proyección, podés tener una buena temporada.
¿VOLVISTE A SENTIR ESA ADRENALINA DE LLEGAR A FINALES DE LOS TORNEOS MÁS IMPORTANTES DE INGLATERRA? A veces pienso que es peor lo que sentís afuera que adentro. Te metés tanto en la táctica y la diaria, que, termina el partido, y los jugadores por lo menos hicieron un esfuerzo por lograr el objetivo. Y uno caminó como un loco, pensó todo el tiempo y no tuvo cómo desgastar nada!!! Hay que salir a varearse un poco después! Se que a los técnicos de fútbol que son apasionados les pasa lo mismo; quedan píricos después de cada partido.

Hablamos mucho, se tomó dos años sabáticos, organizamos un training distinto, equipos basados en un estilo de juego, juntó un lote de caballos distinto y lo traté de entusiasmar para jugar en Argentina. Volvió el año pasado, jugó una barbaridad, lo disfrutó mucho, volvió a divertirse en la cancha y todos lo disfrutamos un poquito. Fui coach del equipo de La Aguada, y lo que trabajé durante todo el año con Tincho dio sus frutos. Y al Sapo Caset, que pasaba a jugar de 3 por primera vez, creo que también pude ayudarlo por haber jugado yo mucho en esa posición. Y también el Sapo tuvo una temporada excelente. Ahí me junte con Michael (Bickford), y entre varios, formamos este equipo de La Indiana.
¿QUÉ REFLEXIÓN TE MERECE LA SITUACIÓN REFERIDA A LOS PERMISOS DE TRABAJO EN INGLATERRA Y CUÁL DEBERÍA SER EL ROL DE LA AAP? ¿DEBERÍAN EJERCER ALGÚN TIPO DE RECIPROCIDAD? Primero eran los pasaportes comunitarios; después, la regla que decía que tenías que haber empezado a jugar en UK para poder participar; es decir, tener 0 gol para ser considerado apto. Después, el asterisco, y así un montón de otras cosas. Es un poco cansador, y muchos de los jugadores del mediano no pueden hacer frente a tanto requisito. Siempre nos jactamos de ser el ente rector del polo mundial con los mejores caballos, jugadores, canchas, etc. Pero, por otro lado, estamos perdiendo terreno en todo. Hay menos jugadores que se proyectan como los futuros reemplazantes de los número 1, menos caballos buscados por nuestras tierras y hasta la mano de obra que se queda en Europa. Han nivelado las necesidades de caballos; o sea, tratan de abastecerse acá. Todo ésto es una estrategia que les da resultado. Hace 20 años era distinto, ahora es así y dentro de 20 años en adelante va a ser totalmente compartida la hegemonía. Entonces, digo, ¿no será el momento de proteger al jugador argentino un poco más? Sin rencor, pero, ¿copiar reglas? Que el cupo de extranjeros exista para formar equipos. Que en torneos importantes los buenos extranjeros se mezclen con promesas argentinas, por ejemplo. No sé, me encantaría saber qué opinan todos, y si ven lo que yo veo, que es que el jugador argentino de 6, 7 y hasta 8 goles, con proyección, tiene muchas menos oportunidades que las que tuve yo. Y eso es una involución.
¿CUÁL CREÉS QUE DEBERÍA SER EL ROL DE LA ASOCIACIÓN DE JUGADORES? No todos hemos hecho lo que la Asociación pide o necesita y, en definitiva, lo que el polo en general necesita. Tenemos un montón de cuentas pendientes y objetivos a alcanzar. Todos los que representan y representaron a la Asociación han dado todo, pero, en realidad, no todos los jugadores han apoyado; se han metido, han opinado y así es imposible llevar cosas adelante. Sobre todo innovar, buscar horizontes nuevos. Sería un gran logro que de una vez por todas las dos Asociaciones puedan defender a los jugadores argentinos en todos lados, ya sea aplicando reciprocidad de reglas o proteccionismo local. Creo que ahí sí tenemos obligaciones compartidas con la AAP y hay que actuar rápido. Y concluye con el siguiente concepto: “El año pasado casi tenemos una Final de la Cámara, uno de los torneos más importantes de la Argentina, con 7 extranjeros, que es algo que nosotros no podemos hacer en otras tierras, ya sea por reglas, por hándicap o porque el torneo no lo permite. Si bien creo en un mercado abierto, porque eso te obliga a ser cada vez mejor, por otro lado también creo que, como país que regentea el polo mundial, tenemos los aces de este deporte y tenemos que poner límites. Y exigir que sea correspondido lo buen anfitrión que el argentino ha sido siempre. Como dijo Adolfito en una nota en Pololine hace unos días: ‘las reglas en UK tratan de embromar a los argentinos’. Sin más que decir...” n

DE GRISOGONO POLO MASTERS The Kings Polo team, made up of the Egyptian patron Mohamed Elsewedy and the argentines Franky Menendez, Silvestre Fanelli and Segundo Condesse, proclaimed themselves winners of the ‘De Grisogono Polo Masters 2016’ that took part in Villa Sesta Polo Club from the 17th till the 26th of June, for teams of up to 15 goals in handicap. Polo Kings maintained an ideal score throughout the tournament and the decisive victory on the last day against Sorleone (victory was proclaimed in an extra chukka by 8-7) allowed them to climb to the top of the podium. Amanara Polo Team, with Nicky Sen, Jeanine Hugo Menendez, Pancho Bensadón and Bautista Urbina came in second. The podium was completed by Vas Sorleone whose patron is Riccardo Tattoni, along with the players Patricio Rattagan, Marcelo Pascual and Edu Menendez. The final day featured three very good games, starting early with the duel between Kings Polo and Vas Sorleone where first place was decided in an extra chukka and Kings Polo finally received the cup.

The duel of the Menendez brothers was a great match, with both teams playing at a high level and scoring goals with almost every attack. This meant that four regulatory chukkers weren’t enough, and so the winner had to be defined in overtime and Franky Menendez was responsible for scoring the decisive goal for Kings Polo Team. In the second match on the last day it was Vas Polo Team and Pullove’s go, despite not having any chance to win a title they played an attractive game. The winning line up was in Pullove (Andrea Moretti, Theodore Von Neufforge, Agustin Garcia Grossi and Martin Espain) by 5 to 3½. To close the last day of the 2016 Masters at Villa Sesta Polo Club, the Team Amanara Polo team faced De Grisogono Polo Team. It was a tough game that was distinct by just half goal for De Grisogono by 6½ to 6. After a very good first half played by the team made up by Davide Nanni, Sebastian Bernardez, Lerin Zubiaurre and Santiago Loza, where they went on to achieve an advantage of up to four goals, Amanara Polo Team upped their game and closed the goal difference, making the fourth chukka decisive. Nicky Sen’s formation came incredibly close to triumphing, but this was prevented by the final bell, which rung just as they were attacking, an attack which would have definitely led to a goal.
La jornada decisiva contó con tres muy buenos partidos, comenzando temprano con el duelo entre Kings Polo y Vas Sorleone que se definió en extra chukker para el primero y que significó la obtención de la copa. El duelo de los hermanos Menendez fue un partidazo, con ambos equipos jugando a un gran nivel e intercambiando goles prácticamente en cada ataque. La paridad durante los cuatro chukkers reglamentarios tuvo que definirse en tiempo extra y fue Franky Menendez el encargado de marcar el decisivo gol de Kings Polo Team. A segunda hora fue el turno de Vas Polo Team y Pullove, que pese a estar sin chances al título jugaron un atractivo encuentro que ganó la formación de Pullove (Andrea Moretti, Teodoro Von Neufforge, Agustín García Grossi y Martín Espain) por 5 a 3½. Para cerrar el último día del Polo Masters 2016 en el Villa Sesta Polo Club se enfrentaron Amanara Polo Team y De Grisogono Polo Team. Fue un partido muy disputado que se definió por apenas medio gol en favor de De Grisogono por 6½ a 6. Tras una muy buena primera mitad del vencedor (Davide Nanni, Sebastián Bernardez, Lerín Zubiaurre y Santiago Loza), donde llegó a alcanzar una ventaja de hasta cuatro goles, llegó la gran reacción de Amanara para acortar diferencias y ponerse a tiro en el cuarto chukker. Muy cerca estuvo la formación de Nicky Sen de llevarse el triunfo ya que tuvo el último ataque del partido pero la campana final, en una jugada que llevaba destino de gol, se lo impidió.

Bruggler Polo Team beat Maslov / Veneto by 7 to 5½ and won the trophy which also awarded Pepsi, owned by Gualtiero Giori, as BPP and Zeina Hosni as the MVP of the tournament. Habtoor Polo, team Patron Mohammed Al Habtoor, returned to St. Tropez after a few years of absence to take part of the Polo Masters – Open de Gassin, one of the most demanding tournaments on the calendar for this French club. Habtoor Polo presented itself with a team made up by Mohammed Al Habtoor, Felipe Llorente, Santiago Cernadas and Guillermo Cuitiño, and was able to get to fourth position in the tournament. Mohammed Al Habtoor described his return to St. Tropez and the international competition a positive one and assured that his organization would continue to participate in high level tournaments abroad. The patron of Habtoor Polo is also the founder and creator of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, the most important polo season in the Middle East, and his team one of the main headliners for the event each year.

Mohammed Al Habtoor calificó de positivo el regreso a St. Tropez y a la competición internacional y aseguró que su organización continuará participando en los torneos de nivel en el exterior. Antelope won the title in its category of 15 goals after beating in the final the team F Polo Team by 8 to 7 in extra chukker. The winning team made up by Geoffrey Palmer, Thibault Guillemin, Juan Pedro Chavanne and Bautista Ortíz de Urbina, who was also the MVP after scoring 7 of 8 goals for his team. In the category of up to 10 goals, Villa Sesta claimed the trophy after beating Sezz with a close 7 to 6.5. This team included: Riccardo Tattoni, Gualtiero Giori, Segundo Stanga (MVP of the final) and Eduardo Menéndez. n
Luego de dos semanas de muy buen polo llegó a su fin el Polo Masters/ Open de Gassin en sus dos categorías: hasta 10 goles de handiap y 15 goles de hándicap. Antelope se quedó con el título en la categoría hasta 15 goles tras derrotar en la final a F Polo Team por 8 a 7 en chukker suplementario. The final of the 122° Open de Paris Maserati being held at Bagatelle was a great day. The journey started with an exclusive lunch at the club’s restaurant -which oversees the polo fieldwhere guests enjoyed a Tuscan style menu. After a parade by the Garde Républicaine de France, both teams rode onto the field ready to fight for the title. It was an even game; the first chukker finished 0-0. It was in the following two chukkers that the match was decided. Costa Rica, one of the greatest teams of the Parisian season, found themselves leading 5-1 at half-time thanks to goals by Iván Maldonado (3), Antonio Gómez, and Juan Zubiaurre. Facundo Fernández Llorente scored one goal for La Concepción. It was was really tough for La Concepcion to get back into the game, despite great plays from Fernández Llorente, who scored again for the team. But Iván Maldonado scored to extend his lead to four. The two more goals scored by MVP Facundo Fernández Llorente were not enough to change the result. It was a great 6-4 victory for Costa Rica.
Con un gran marco de público y un evento que estuvo a la altura de las circunstancias, el 122° Open de Paris Maserati en Bagatelle llegó a su fin. La jornada final comenzó con un almuerzo en el restaurante del club, que cuenta con una exclusiva vista a la cancha de polo, además de un estilo muy distinguido y único. Luego de un desfile a cargo de la Garde Républicaine de France, los equipos de Costa Rica y La Concepcion salieron a la cancha en búsqueda del tan ansiado título. Comenzó siendo un encuentro igualado, en el que no hubo grandes diferencias en el juego y menos en el marcador, ya que el primer parcial terminó 0-0. Pero los dos chukkers siguientes terminaron determinando el trámite del partido. Y es que Costa Rica, llegó al half-time ganando por 5 a 1 gracias a los goles de Iván Maldonado (3), Antonio Gómez y Juan Zubiaurre, mientras que Facundo Fernández Llorente anotó para La Concepción. A partir de allí todo se hizo cuesta arriba para La Concepción, que seguía intentando, en buena medida, a partir del gran partido que tuvo Fernández Llorente, que seguía marcando para su equipo. Pero nuevamente Iván Maldonado se interponía en el camino para extender la diferencia a 4, nuevamente. Ya sobre el final, un par de goles más del MVP de la final, Facundo Fernández Llorente, decoraron el resultado pero no fueron suficientes para cambiar la suerte.

Juan Carlos Menchón, or as he is known in the polo world ‘teach’ Paidu, has a life driven by the world of sport. Professional football, tennis, and now also polo players rely on his training to get fit for the highly demanding competition. Since he graduated in 1977 as a P.E teacher at the University La Plata, Argentina he hasn’t stop working with elite athletes. First football, followed by tennis, and finally polo. He got into polo, the sport in which he has been working for the past 6 year alongside the best player in the world, Adolfo Cambiaso, thanks to one of his four sons, of which three (Ignacio, Alejo and Juan Pedro) share the same job and passion for the sport as their father. Where as Rodrigo, the eldest, is an Agronomist, but also has close relations to polo. Nevertheless the history of ‘Teach’ Paidu starts with football, in ‘Nacional B’, and ‘Argentina A’, until he started with tennis. It was thanks to the trainer Raúl Pérez Roldán, who arrived to his hometown Tandíl to start a tennis academy. Here is where Paidu started working the racquet pros. “Raúl was the person who left a mark on us all”, says Juan Carlos about Guillermo Pérez Roldán’s father, successful professional Argentine tennis player with whom the teacher worked all throughout his career. “I worked with Guillermo Pérez Roldán during his whole career, from juvenile until he became professional. Guillermo retired very young, at 23 years old, but he became number 11 on worldwide ranking on clay. That’s when I started with tennis, following the ATP circuit and the Davis cup. My debut was exactly that, a Davis cup in Guayaquil, Ecuador for the Argentine team, that also included Martín Jaite, Frana and Minussi”, he remembers. Then it was time for first division football, starting with the 1992-93 season, with the team ‘Estudiantes de la Plata’ where he directed Pablo Erbín, current personal trainer for Ellerstina. “In that time, Pablo was Estudiante’s captain and we have always had a great friendship, which he also shares with my sons”, states Juan Carlos. Around the end of the 90’s, specifically in 1997, the Teacher goes to Japan to work with Carlos Pachamé, trainer and technical assistant for the Argentine national team during Carlos Bilrado’s time.
Juan Carlos Menchón, o Profe Paidu, como se lo conoce en el ambiente del polo, lleva una vida vinculado al mundo del deporte. Profesionales del fútbol, tenis y ahora del polo confían en su entrenamiento para ponerse a punto para las exigencias de la alta competición. Desde que se recibió en 1977 como Profesor de Educación Física en la Universidad de La Plata, Argentina no ha parado de trabajar con deportistas de élite. Primero en el fútbol, luego llegó el turno del tenis y finalmente el polo. Al polo, deporte en el cual trabaja desde hace seis años junto al mejor del mundo, Adolfo Cambiaso, llegó gracias a uno de sus cuatro hijos varones, de los cuáles tres (Ignacio, Alejo y Juan Pedro) comparten la misma profesión y pasión por el deporte al tiempo que el mayor, Rodrigo, es Ingeniero Agrónomo y está muy relacionado también con el polo. Pero la historia del Profe Paidu comienza en el fútbol del Interior, en los torneos del Nacional B y Argentino A, hasta que llega el turno del tenis. Fue gracias al entrenador Raúl Pérez Roldán, que llegó a Tandíl su ciudad natal, para poner una Academia de Tenis que comenzó a trabajar con los profesionales de la raqueta. “Raúl fue la persona que nos marcó a todos nosotros”, dice Juan Carlos sobre el padre de Guillermo Pérez Roldán, exitoso tenista profesional argentino con quién el Profe trabajó durante toda su carrera. “Con Guillermo Pérez Roldán trabajé durante toda su carrera, desde juvenil hasta que se hace profesional. Guillermo se retira muy jóven, a los 23 años pero llegó a ser número 11 del mundo en tierra batida (polvo de ladrillo). Ahí arranque con el tenis, haciendo el Circuito ATP y la Copa Davis. Mi debut fue justamente en una Copa Davis en Guayaquil, Ecuador para el equipo de Argentina que también integraban Martín Jaite, Frana y Minussi”, recuerda. Luego llegó el turno del fútbol de primera división al vincularse en la temporada 1992-93 con Estudiantes de la Plata donde dirigió a Pablo Erbín, actual Preparador Físico de Ellerstina. “Pablo era el capitán de Estudiantes en esa época y desde siempre hemos tenido una gran amistad y también la tiene con mis hijos”, afirma Juan Carlos. Sobre finales de los años 90, concretamente en 1997, el Profe se va a Japón a trabajar con Carlos Pachamé, entrenador y ayudante técnico

In 2000 he once again returns to Japan, and since his return back to Argentina in 2003, until 2011, tennis occupied 100% of his carreer. Mariano Zavaleta, Pico Mónaco, Gastón Gaudio and the Peruvian Luis Horna, well known and successful tennis players, all trained under Teach Padiu’s orders. His contact with polo until then has been limited to being in the audience, at one or other match in Palm Beach when the trainer traveled with Zavaleta to dispute the Sony Ericsson. Thanks to his friendship with Toto Collardín, professional polo player, they resided in his home and went to watch him play during the American season. “I knew Cambiaso through name already in that time, but of the sport polo I had seen very little” remembers Teach Paidu. “Now it’s the other way around and its tennis players like David Nalbandián, Juan Martín del Potro and Pico Mónaco, amongst others, who are very related to the polo players. It’s always fun when they reunite and the barbeques where they share anecdotes and experiences. In that sense Cambiaso, who has years of experience, is a great influence to those young tennis players who train with my sons and have the opportunity of meeting him. There are many things in common between the two sports, when they speak of experience, objectives, never giving up and setting goals, never surrendering, the young one then listens and learns a lot”
de la selección argentina en la época de Carlos Bilardo. En el 2000 regresa nuevamente a Japón y desde su regreso a la Argentina en el 2003 y hasta 2011 el tenis ocupó el 100% de su trabajo. Mariano Zavaleta, Pico Mónaco, Gastón Gaudio y el peruano Luis Horna, reconocidos y exitosos tenistas profesionales se entrenaron bajo las órdenes del Profe Paidu. Su contacto con el polo hasta ese entonces se había limitado como espectador de algún partido en Palm Beach cuando el Profe viajaba con Zavaleta a disputar el Sony Ericsson. Gracias a la amistad del tenista con Toto Collardín, polista profesional, se quedaban en su casa e iban a verlo jugar en la temporada de Estados Unidos. “A Cambiaso lo conocía de nombre ya en esa época pero de polo había visto muy poco”, recuerda el profe Paidu. “Ahora se da a la inversa y son los tenistas como David Nalbandián, Juan Martín del Potro y Pico Mónaco, entre otros, que están muy relacionados con los polistas. Son muy divertidas esas reuniones y asados donde se comparten anécdotas y experiencias. En ese sentido Cambiaso, que tiene mucha experiencia y trayectoria, es una gran influencia para tenistas jóvenes que entrenan mis hijos y tienen la posibilidad de conocerlo. Hay mucha transferencia entre un deporte y otro, cuando se habla de experiencia, objetivos, de no entregarse nunca y ponerse metas, no rendirse, el joven escucha y aprende mucho”.

“It was 5 years ago when Alejo, one of my sons, needed me to take over a session with Pelón Stirling, whom he trained and I started with polo full time. I was in Tandil because I didn’t want to travel for the tennis anymore, and so I worked with Pelón since then and after went back to my city” the trainer recalls. “A few weeks after the start of the Argentine season Adolfo Cambiaso joined them to train together and Alejo asked me to help him out, that was when I started working with Cambiaso. We had a good vibe and in 2012 I started working full time for him” he adds.

“Hace 5 años Alejo, uno de mis hijos, necesitaba que le hiciese una suplencia con Pelón Stirling, a quién entrenaba y ahí empecé a full con el polo. Yo estaba en Tandil porque no quería viajar más por el tenis y trabajé con Pelón ese tiempo y luego regresé a mi cuidad”, recuerda el Profe “A pocas semanas de iniciarse la temporada de Argentina se acopla Adolfo Cambiaso a trabajar con ellos y Alejo me pidió que le de una mano y ahí fue que comencé a trabajar con Cambiaso. Regarding what most shocked him about the number one polo player world wide, Menchón remembers with precision their first conversion in the Cañuelas gym, Cambiaso’s residence in Argentina. “When I asked him why he wanted to train, he explained it to me in the following maner: “I feel like Federer but I have to play against Nadal, Djokovik, Ferrer and for that I must train, I never trained before and now I have to train because simply doing what im doing now won’t be enough”. This example gives you an exact image of what Adolfo Cambiaso is”. “In my whole career I’ve never met anyone with so much will to win and who competes to well. Its hard to find someone who competes so well and with that much adrenaline, only the big ones have this”, he adds. Teach Paidu found himself with a Cambiaso very much troubled by injuries, specially his back, and he has had to tackle very tough situations that once almost meant that the Nº1 of La Dolfina would have to sit out of a Argentine Open final. “The most important is to set up a training team and this becomes the base of everything. A work team where he (Cambiaso) is the center point of everything and has the most responsibilities. Then he has to have a partner next to him like María (Vazquez), his wife to me is someone very important to this team. I always say that Maria handles the training that isn’t seen, the day-to-day, the sharing, the commitment, the psychological support and the whole nutrition part. She has a very important role. We have also set up a team of doctors and physical therapists, formed by Dr. Walter Mira and Dr. Gabriel Kelmbosky, with Alejandro Rolón, with the physical therapists Federico Abal and Manuel Pablo, this is a very large structure and has professionalism at the base of everything. “People are always there when they are needed, Adolfo travels with personal trainers and physical therapists throughout the whole year and the whole year round we are training. It’s not that we can make miracles happen or are magicians, things are done the way they should be done. There is a follow up with the player

onda y ya en el 2012 empecé a trabajar a full con él”, agrega. Acerca de lo que más le sorprendió del número uno del polo mundial, Menchón recuerda con exactitud su primera charla en el gimnasio de Cañuelas, residencia de Cambiaso en Argentina. “Cuando le pregunté porqué quería entrenar, él me lo explicó de la siguiente manera: “me siento Federer pero tengo que jugar contra Nadal, Djokovic, Ferrer y para eso tengo que entrenar, nunca entrené y ahora tengo que ponerme a entrenar porque con lo que hago no me va a alcanzar”. Este ejemplo te pinta de cuerpo entero lo que es Adolfo Cambiaso”. “Nunca conocí en mi carrera una persona que quiera ganar tanto y que compita tan bien. Porque el compite bien y siempre con la adrenalina a tope, muy difícil de encontrar en los deportistas y que solamente los grandes la tienen”, agrega. El Profe Paidu se encontró con un Cambiaso muy castigado por las lesiones, sobre todo en la espalda, y tuvo que lidiar con situaciones complicadas que incluso casi dejan al Nº1 de La Dolfina fuera de una final del Abierto Argentino. “Lo más importante fue armar un equipo de trabajo y ahí está la base de todo. Un equipo de trabajo donde él (Cambiaso) está a la cabeza de todo y es el principal responsable. Después tiene al lado a una compañera como María (Vazquez), su mujer que para mí es una persona muy importante en este equipo. Siempre digo que María maneja el entrenamiento que no se ve, el del día a día, de compartir, de contención, de apoyarlo sicológicamente, de manejar toda la parte de nutrición. Cumple un rol muy importante. Luego hemos armado un grupo médico y de kinesiólogos fundamental con el Dr. Walter Mira y el Dr. Gabriel Kelmbosky, con Alejandro Rolón, con los kinesiólogos Federico Abal y Manuel Pablo, una estructura muy grande y profesional detrás de todo esto. Gente que está cuando se lo precise más allá de que Adolfo viaja con PF y kinesiólogo durante todo el año y todo el año estamos entrenando. No es que uno sea un manosanta o un mago, se hacen las cosas como
which is very important, that’s key, making sure the athlete follows the training and nutrition plan.” The serious problems were left behind and today Cambiaso finds himself in his best competing state each season. “We are very happy about the current state Adolfo finds himself in, a moment in which he is enjoying what he is doing, and that makes me very happy”. “Two years ago we worked through a back injury in the middle of the Argentine season, after a crash and not being there 100% he ended up playing the Argentine Open final regardless. The only thing I asked was that nothing would happen to him on the horse because polo is a high competition sport and risk and he wasn’t in ideal conditions to be playing such an important match”, remembers ‘Teach’ Paidu. “To top that, it was a very long final and various players got cramps. And Adolfo was there, handling everything from on top of the horse and he won the Open and the Triple Crown. That’s why I always say that this man has an impressive head, he is a great one, it must be said over and over again”, he adds.
FAMILY AND WORK
“I have lots of fun working with my sons” says Menchón proudly. Ignacio, Alejo and Juan Pedro also studied physical education and they also work in polo. “The fact that they choose this wonderful work makes me very happy. We share many conversations and experiences. I feel content and protected by them, they are very professional people, who are very informed and up to date. There is feedback of knowledge between us, and that’s very valuable. Sitting down to eat a barbeque and talking about trainings and sharing experiences is very nice”, he says. “Thanks to the Cambiaso family I am able to travel with my wife and we coincide with my sons in many places, Juan Pablo “Potito” works for Rashid Albwardy (Dubai’s Patron) and Alejo is also in the world of polo so we share travels, work and polo with the whole family”, he adds. To end our conversation we asked him what advice he would give to his sons and the trainer, with the simplicity and humbleness that characterizes him, replied “I don’t like to give advice but I do suggest that the most important thing in this profession is to be humble and to always be a good professional. Don’t think you know everything, in this profession you are constantly learning and what you learn with each player is incredible. What I learnt with Cambiaso in these years, at this height in my life, was impressive. Football gives you lots of experience because, you control a set of 30 players all with different difficulties and all that gives you an impressive knowledge. But in Cambiaso I discovered someone very professional, incredible in each aspect of life.” n

Los serios problemas quedaron atrás y hoy Cambiaso se encuentra en su plenitud y compitiendo cada temporada a tope. “Estamos muy contentos por el momento en el que se encuentra Adolfo, un momento en el cual está disfrutando mucho lo que hace y eso a mí me pone muy contento”. “Dos años atrás tratábamos una lesión de espalda en plena Temporada Argentina y tras un bloqueo y una semana entre algodones llegó a jugar la final del Abierto Argentino. Lo único que pedía era que no le pasara nada arriba del caballo porque el polo es un deporte de alta competencia y riesgo y no estaba en las condiciones ideales para jugar un partido de esa importancia”, recuerda Profe Paidu. “Para colmo esa final duró mucho y se acalambraron varios jugadores. Y Adolfo estaba ahí, bancando todo arriba del caballo y ganó el Abierto y la Triple Corona. Por eso siempre digo que este muchacho tiene una cabeza impresionante, es un grande, hay que remarcarlo una y otra vez”, agrega.
LA FAMILIA Y EL TRABAJO
“Me divierte mucho trabajar con mis hijos”, dice orgulloso Menchón. Ignacio, Alejo y Juan Pedro también estudiaron Eduación Física y también trabajan en el polo. “Que hayan elegido esta profesión que es tan linda me pone muy feliz. Compartimos muchas charlas y experiencias. Me siento contenido y protegido por ellos, son personas muy profesionales, que están muy informadas y actualizadas. Hay una retroalimentación de conocimiento entre nosotros y eso es muy valioso. Sentarse a comer un asado y hablar de entrenamiento y compartir experiencias es muy lindo”, dice. “Gracias a la familia Cambiaso puedo viajar con mi esposa y coincidir con mis hijos en muchos lados, ya que Juan Pablo “Potito” trabaja para Rashid Albwardy (Patrón de Dubai) y Alejo también está con el polo así compartimos viajes, trabajo y polo con toda mi familia”, agrega. Para finalizar la charla le preguntamos qué consejo le daría a sus hijos y el Profe, con la sencillez y humildad que le caracteriza, nos dice: “No me gusta aconsejar pero sí les sugiero que lo más importante en esta profesión es tener humildad y capacitarse permanentemente para ser un buen profesional. No creerse que las sabes todas, en esta profesión aprendés permanentemente y lo que aprendés con cada jugador es increíble. Lo que he aprendido con Cambiaso en estos años, a esta altura de mi vida, fue impresionante. El fútbol da mucha experiencia porque es grupal, manejás un plantel de 30 jugadores todos con difícultades diferentes y eso te da un conocimiento impresionante. Pero en Cambiaso encontré una persona muy profesional, increíble desde todo punto de vista”. n

Por lo tanto, se podrá: contratar jugadores profesionales para el equipo, como así también caballos, todo lo referido a equipamiento, fletes, logística, petiseros, boxes para los caballos, movilidad propia, hasta alojamiento.

For example: hire professional players for each team, hire horses, everything related to technical equipment, lorries, grooms, boxes, and even housing. The objective is to offer the patron everything they need, so when they arrive in Argentina, they only need to worry about showing up to the field and enjoying the best polo possible. If the patron decided to play a tournament with his own team, Luis Guzmán can also be of service. This includes tournaments organised by the AAP or those put together by local clubs. n

Polo Women, la Real Federación Española de Polo y Santa María Polo Club organizaron el Campeonato de España Femenino que en su edición 2016 proclamó al equipo de Spogogo como campeón.
The line up with the venezuelan Ana Vargas, the argentines Mia Cambiaso (daughter of Adalfo Cambiaso, the best player in the world) and Candelaria and Milagros Fernández Araújo (daughters of Milo, coach of La Dolfina) climed to the highest place in the podium after a three day tournament which took place at the Rio fields in Santa Maria Polo Club.

All Stars Women’s Championship The weekend before the Female Spanish Championship dispute this tournament was put into play at the Ayala Polo Club fields. The tournament was organized by Polo Women and featured four teams. The winner was Nipas (Annie Woodhead (Uk), Caroline Morandi (Fr), Annita van der Hoeven (Hol), Izzy McGregor (Uk)), who beat Polo Women in the final (Tanya Dany (Ale), Katie McKinney (Uk), Celine Charloux (Fr), Joanna Mobley (Uk). La inauguración del torneo y presentación de los equipos se realizó en el Hotel Club Marítimo como parte de una intensa agenda social que acompañó la cita deportiva. El podio lo completó Polo Women, equipo que llegó desde Estados Unidos y fue una de las grandes sorpresas del torneo. Lia Salvo fue la MVP del certamen y Marisa Wells la revelación del torneo. El mejor ejemplar de la final fue para Nana, propiedad de Poroto Cambiaso y que jugó Candelaria Fernández Araújo.
All Stars Women’s Championship El fin de semana previo a la disputa del Campeonato de España Femenino se puso en juego este torneo en las canchas de Ayala Polo Club. El torneo fue organizado por Polo Women y contó con cuatro equipos. El ganador fue Nipas ( Annie Woodhead (Uk), Caroline Morandi (Fr), Annita van der Hoeven (Hol), Izzy McGregor (Uk), que derrotó en la final a Polo Women (Tanya Dany (Ale), Katie McKinney (Uk), Celine Charloux (Fr), Joanna Mobley (Uk). Por el tercer puesto, Charriol Watches venció a Spogogo por 6 goles a 2. n
