Volvemos a publicar una edición especial más de La Revista de Sotogrande, centrada en el Circuito, para rememorar un recorrido por todos esos buenos momentos vividos durante el año, en el que nos hemos volcados en elevar la calidad del evento; para que jugadores, patrocinadores y colaboradores disfruten de una experiencia única e inolvidable, vinculada al

deporte y a un estilo de vida sin igual. Algo que sólo se puede lograr cuando unes Sotogrande y golf. Por ello, desde el mismo momento en el que finalizó nuestra aventura internacional, con la disputa de la Gran Final del Circuito en el trazado Oceánico Victoria en Portugal; nos hemos puestos manos a la obra para conseguir que la próxima edición del Circuito sea aún mejor. Contando con los mejores campos, las mejores apuestas de los patrocinadores ávidos y la mejor opción para promocionar este destino único y exclusivo como es Sotogrande. En lo deportivo, un gran amigo de esta casa, el golfista Álvaro Quirós, también ha querido formar parte de esta edición especial. Una figura que lleva el nombre de Sotogrande y la calidad de nuestros campos por todos los rincones golfísticos del mundo, siendo uno de los grandes embajadores de este rincón. Un campeón nato que trata de recuperar los puestos de honor en el escalafón profesional, por el cual mantiene una lucha titánica ante sí

mismo. Y en esta edición también hemos dado entrada a The Gecko Tour, todo un desafío en el terreno golfístico para los nuevos profesionales que se inician y ven con entusiasmo como este circuito les acoge con mucho esmero y a modo de trampolín ante los circuitos internacionales. Gran labor la de sus organizadores. Finalmente, agradecer la fidelidad, apoyo y confianza demostrada durante estos tres años a todos los jugadores y patrocinadores que de una manera o de otra han formado parte de este Circuito, algunos de ellos en las tres ediciones. Sólo remarcar el compromiso adquirido una vez mas por parte de la organización desde Grupo HCP, con el reto de superarnos en 2016, en el IV Circuito de Golf La Revista de Sotogrande. The organisers truly do great work. Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude for the loyalty, support and trust shown during these three years by players and sponsors that have all played a role in the Circuit, some in all three editions. Unos días después de viajar a Portugal para disputar la gran final de 2015, el equipo de Grupo HCP ya se encuentra orquestando los detalles necesarios para hacer de la IV Edición del Circuito de Golf de La Revista de Sotogrande una cita inolvidable. Cuentan, para ello, con los mejores campos: Almenara, La Reserva, San Roque Club, Alcaidesa y Finca Cortesín. A ellos se suma, para 2016, el mítico Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, que este año no pudo participar por estar inmerso en una profunda reforma.

Grandes recorridos en los que divertirse jugando y en los que, como ya viene siendo habitual, disfrutar de jornadas de excepción entre amigos gracias a ese ‘saber hacer’ que caracteriza a Grupo HCP a la hora de organizar eventos deportivos y sociales. La cuarta edición contará, una vez más, con seis pruebas y una gran final, cuyo escenario será la gran sorpresa de la temporada. The Sotogrande Magazine Golf Circuit is growing and continuing. 2016 is around the corner, and with it, the spectacle will return. The 4th Edition of this event will once again stand out on the calendar as one of the key events for golf fans. The secret behind the Circuit is that it views golf as an experience. It is a fascinating adventure that stops off at some of the best courses in Europe, allowing participants to play, feel, and enjoy golf. There are great plans for an edition that will not go unnoticed. A few days after travelling to Portugal to play the 2015 Grand Final, the Grupo HCP team are already organising the necessary details to ensure that the 4th Edition of the Sotogrande Magazine Golf Circuit is an unforgettable event. To achieve this, they have the best courses: Almenara, La Reserva, San Roque Club, Alcaidesa and Finca CortesĂn. In addition to those clubs, in 2016 the legendary Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande will also be on the golfing schedule. It was unable to participate

Un fin de fiesta como se merecía. Grupo HCP, como organizador del evento, buscaba para la tercera edición del Circuito de Golf La Revista de Sotogrande un toque distintivo, especial y novedoso como colofón a un intenso y emocionante calendario de pruebas clasificatorias. Tras dos ediciones en las que el escenario de la Gran Final fue Real Club Valderrama, para esta tercera cita se concibió una Gran Final Internacional, lejos del espacio habitual de juego

La cita sirvió para conversar de manera distendida entre los jugadores y asistentes, realizar las primeras premisas sobre la jornada deportiva del día siguiente y conocer toda la información pertinente sobre la competición, detalles de la organización y curiosidades del campo.

Además, los clasificados recibieron un ‘Welcome Pack’ para la Gran Final, con la ya clásica indumentaria para jugar (polo técnico y jersey del Circuito), acompañados de varios obsequios por parte de los patrocinadores y colaboradores del Circuito que quisieron tener un detalle con los viajeros golfistas. Un brindis por lo que estaba por llegar y a soñar con el golf. El plato fuerte del viaje se concentró en la jornada del sábado, 31 de octubre. Tras un ceremonial desayuno, los jugadores, ubicados en diferentes partidas que salieron al campo de manera consecutiva cada 10 minutos (siendo la primera de ellas a las 9:50), afrontaron una exigente, competida y atractiva jornada de golf, completamente inmer-

sos en la piel de un jugador profesional. Tan sólo habían pasado unos días desde la disputa del Masters de Portugal 2015, por lo que los participantes se encontraron un campo en excelente condiciones aunque con un perfil de dificultad acorde a tal evento. Sin duda, la mayoría de los comentarios de la jornada entre los jugadores giraron sobre el ‘Rough’; alto y comprometido para los que no lograban dejar la bola en la calle. También fueron muchos los que hablaron de la magnífico ocasión de enfrentarse a un campo complicado y sintiéndose en las ‘barbas’ de un profesional. Emocionante prueba sin duda, en un impresionante trazado que no dejó indiferente a nadie y despertó el elogio de los presentes. Resultados y puntuaciones parejas, lo que permitió un

gran interés en las horas previas a conocer a los ganadores. De manera simultánea, el resto de integrantes de la expedición también disputaron el Torneo Paralelo a la Gran Final. Con un clima más distendido, los jugadores disfrutaron de un recorrido de excepción, gozando de todos las facilidades ofrecidas por un entorno en el que se respira golf de gran nivel. Las sorpresas llegaron por la noche. El autobús recogió a la expedición a la entrada del complejo para realizar el traslado hasta el Hotel Tivoli Marina, en plena Marina de Vilamoura, uno de los rincones más afamados para el turismo en Portugal y con no pocas similitudes con Sotogrande y su Puerto.

Restaurantes, pubs, un casino y mucho ambiente en una zona ubicada a pocos metros del campo de golf. El Hotel Tivoli Marina, a cuya llegada esperaba a los jugadores con una copa de champagne, hizo de anfitrión para la cena de gala y entrega de premios del III Circuito de Golf La Revista de Sotogrande. Tras un exquisita menú y con la degustación de Bombay Sapphire y Grey Goose, por cortesía de Grupo Barcardi, se realizó la entrega de trofeos. Una entrega muy especial, por un lado por tratarse de los trofeos de la Gran Final, y por otro, al ser la primera ocasión en el que se otorga un placa conmemorativa a los tres ganadores de sendas categorías que forman el Circuito. Una manera de primar la fidelidad con la competición y la perseverancia en la regularidad de resultados. En la Categoría de Damas, la ganadora fue Lulu Pouroulis; en Segunda Categoría de Caballeros, el ganador fue Antonio S. García; y en Primera Categoría de Caballeros, José A. Torres. Respecto a la competición paralela, el triunfador del día en el Oceánico Victoria fue Ricardo Andrades, seguido por Martín Gutiérrez y Óscar Villanueva, segundo y tercero respectivamente. En cuanto a la Gran Final, los premios especiales fueron para José Ignacio Benito (Premio Scratch) y Francisco Muñoz Montes (Drive más largo y Bola más cercana). La ganadora en la Categoría de Damas fue Concepción Soler, seguida de María José Sillero y Olga Merino. En Segunda Categoría de Caballeros, el triunfo fue para Francisco Funes, seguido de Manuel Guisado y Malcom Judd. Por último, en Primera Categoría de Caballeros, el ganador fue por segundo año consecutivo Ángel Morales, seguido de Francisco Muñoz y José Ignacio Benito. Destacar que cada ganador recibió una completa bolsa con un juego de palos de primer nivel. Resaltar también que The Gecko Tour, competición colaboradora con el Circuito, premió a los tres ganadores de las diferentes categorías con una tarjeta para el ProAm Ernie Els que se disputa en el mes de marzo en La Reserva de Sotogrande. Felicitaciones, abrazos, brindis y muchas fotografías para recordar el momento, se convirtieron en la tónica del resto de la noche antes del regreso en autobús hacia el Hotel Victoria, de nuevo. Una jornada para enmarcar. Ya en la jornada del domingo, si el tiempo y la lluvia habían respetado a la expedición hasta el momento hizo su aparición durante el regreso a Sotogrande. Con un autobús repleto de buenos momentos y un ambiente divertido. Sin duda, todo un éxito y una bonita experiencia compartir un fin de semana con los jugadores del Circuito en tierras portuguesas. Una vivencia que no hace más que subir el listón de la competición un año más y el umbral de exigencia a un trabajo que continúe superando el nivel de calidad, año a año, para que los participantes vuelvan a disfrutar de una cuarta edición en 2016 con toda la ilusión del primer día. The party got the ending it deserved. Grupo HCP, as the organiser of the event was hoping to add a distinctive, special and innovative touch to the third edition of the Sotogrande Magazine Golf Circuit with the final event following an exciting schedule of qualifying events. Following two editions of the circuit where the Grand Final was held at Real Club Valderrama, for this third circuit, the idea was hatched to hold an International Grand Final, far from the circuit; destination: Portugal. Specifically, the magnificent Oceánico Victoria course in Vilamoura in the Portuguese Algarve was chosen. This was the venue for the 2007 Portugal Masters on the European Professional Golf Circuit. No sooner said than done. Following an attractive, competitive and close-

ly fought qualification stage, with six events with points up for grabs that offered a route to the Grande Final (Novo Sancti Petri, Almenara, La Reserva de Sotogrande, San Roque Club, Finca Cortesín and Alcaidesa); the definitive list of 25 finalists with a place at the big event in Portugal was complete (9 players from the Men’s First Category, 9 from the Men’s Second Category and 7 from the Women’s Category). To make it happen, following a great amount of collective work and organisation effort, Grupo HCP programmed, as planned, a trip from Sotogrande to enjoy an unforgettable weekend (from 30 October to 1 November) in Vilamoura. Golf had the key role, but it was not the only star of the show.

The expedition of qualified players left Sotogrande on Friday 30 0ctober. It was comprised of players, many of them accompanied by someone, as well as friends of the circuit that did not want to miss the event or the chance to play in the Parallel Tournament. A bus, perfectly equipped and decorated for the occasion, became the perfect transport for a trip full of good moments, laughter, a fantastic atmosphere and some little details and surprises that will long be remembered by those that were there. It was a fun journey, filled with all of Sotogrande’s golfing talent, to one of the most appealing spots in Europe for experiencing the sport. Following arrival at the impressive Hotel Tivoli Victoria, located in the golf com-

plex, the finalists enjoyed a welcome drink following the trip, with MarquĂŠs de Riscal wines. In the charming Pop Salon at Tivoli Victoria, the golfers enjoyed a reception, accompanied by some typical appetizers from the area. The event allowed the players and those attending to talk in a relaxed atmosphere, offer their first thoughts about the following day of sport and find out all of the information about the competition, details of the organisation, and course curiosities. Also, the finalists received a welcome pack for the Grand Final, with the now classic playing gear (a training top and the Circuit jersey), along with various gifts from the Circuitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sponsors and collaborators that wanted to give the travelling golfers a little something. A toast for what was to come and dreams of golf. The main event centred on Saturday 31

October. Following a ceremonial breakfast, the players, organised into different playing groups went out consecutive, with one group leaving every 10 minutes (the first at 9:50). Players faced a demanding, competitive and appealing day of golf, and were able to get a real feel of what it is like to play as a professional. Only a few days had passed since the 2015 Portugal Masters had taken place, therefore the participants found a course in excellent conditions, although with a difficult level in line with such an event. There is no doubt that the majority of comments on the day between players revolved around the rough; high and tricky for those that failed to get their ball onto the fairway. There were also many that spoke about the magnificent chance to play on a difficult

course and experience the spiky situations faced by professional players. It was undoubtedly an exciting event, on an exciting course that made a mark on everyone and earned the praise of those present. The results and scores were neck and neck, and this aroused great interest in the hours ahead of the winners being announced. Also, the other members on the trip took part in the Parallel Tournament, held simultaneously with the Grand Final. In a more relaxed atmosphere, players enjoyed an exceptional round, enjoying all of the comforts offered by an area that simply bathes in top level golf. The surprises came later that night. The bus picked up the group at the

entrance to the complex before heading to the Hotel Tivoli Marina, right in the centre of the Marina de Vilamoura, one of the most famous tourism areas in Portugal. The area also bears a close resemblance to Sotogrande and its port. There are restaurants, pubs, a casino and lots of atmosphere in an area located just metres from the golf course. The Hotel Tivoli Marino, which served players a glass of champagne upon arrival, was the setting for the gala dinner and prize giving ceremony for the 3rd Sotogrande Magazine Golf Circuit. Following an exquisite menu and tasting session with Bombay Sapphire and Grey Goose, provided courtesy of the Bacardi Group, the trophy presentation took place. It was a very special ceremony, on one hand with trophies for the Grand Final, and on the other, it was the first time that commemorative plaques have been presented to the three winners of the Circuit’s different categories. It was a means of rewarding loyalty to the competition and perseverance shown with consistent results. The winner of the Women’s Category was Lulu Pouroulis; in the Men’s Second Category, the winner was Antonio S. García; and in the Men’s First Category, José A. Torres took top spot. With regard to the parallel competition, the winner on the day at Oceánico Victoria was Ricardo Andrades, followed by Martín Gutiérrez and Óscar Villanueva, in second and third respectively. As for the Grand Final, the special prizes went to José Ignacio Benito (Scratch Prize) and Francisco Muñoz Montes (Longest Drive and Closest Ball to the

Hole). The Winner in the Women’s Category was Concepción Soler, followed by María José Sillero and Olga Merino. In the Men’s Second Category, the winner was Francisco Funes, followed by Manuel Guisado and Malcolm Judd. Lastly, in the Men’s First Category, the winner for the second consecutive year was Ángel Morales, followed by Francisco Muñoz and José Ignacio Benito. It is worth mentioning that each winner received a golf bag complete with a set of top level clubs. It should also be emphasised that The Gecko Tour, the competition that collaborates with the Circuit, awarded the three winners of the different categories with a playing card for the Ernie Els Pro-Am, which takes place in March at La Reserva de Sotogrande. Congratulations, hugs, toasts, and lots of photographs to remember the moment, was the pattern for the rest of the night before everyone returned by bus again to Hotel Victoria. It was a day to remember. On Sunday, bad weather and rain made their first appearance on the weekend as the expedition made its way back to Sotogrande. The bus was full of good times and a fun atmosphere. Without doubt, the event was a complete success and it was a great experience to be able to spend a weekend with the Circuit’s players in Portugal. Once again this year, the experience only served to raise the bar in terms of the level of competition and demand for work to continue in order to surpass the level of quality, from year to year. en marcha el telón de un circuito único en su formato y que cuenta con la capacidad de unir lo mejor del golf y el mejor ambiente en todo un evento social. Con una buena participación, se logró un importante desembarco de golfistas de la zona de Sotogrande y Costa del Sol en Novo Sancti Petri para su puesta de largo. En esta edición el circuito ha querido seguir abriendo fronteras y buscando nuevos desafíos golfísticos. En la parte deportiva, el premio Hoyo en Uno quedó desierto al no conseguirse ninguno (el galardón era una Yamaha cortesía de Pont Grup). de llevó a los participantes al imponente trazado Old Course de San Roque Club. Un recorrido impresionante en el que casi centenar de participantes disfrutaron de 18 hoyos únicos. Los jugadores contaron en esta ocasión con un ‘Welcome Pack’ a su llegada por cortesía de La Caixa Banca Privada, colaborador del circuito. Como siempre, durante el trazado, disfrutaron de un tentempié con Parrilla La Quinta, además del atractivo hoyo 16, en el que The Gecko Tour repartió material deportivo. En esta ocasión tampoco se logró el hoyo en uno. Tras la cita con el golf, con el mejor ambiente, se desarrolló el cóctel y la entrega de premios. Al igual que el pasado año, la comida se celebró en el Restaurante Kamakura, en el que los participantes disfrutaron de las exquisitas variedades de la cocina japonesa. En el plano deportivo, Pepe Cáceres consiguió el premio a la Bola más cercana, Santiago Camacho el Drive más Recto, y el la Bola especial fue para Nicolás Larrain. En cuanto al Premio Scratch, el ganador fue Leopoldo Moreno. En la Categoría Damas, la ganadora fue Elena Kouznetsovia, seguida de

ment that served as the curtain raiser for a circuit that has a unique format and the ability to combine the best golf and the best atmosphere to create a complete social event. There was a good level of participation, and the tournament managed to attract a significant numbers of golfers from Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol to Novo Sancti Petri for the opening event. This edition the circuit wanted to further open its borders and continue to look for new golfing challenges. In terms of the sport, no one managed to collect the Hole in One award (the prize was a Yamaha courtesy of Pont Grup). Ángel Morales won the Closest

This time around the Hole in One prize once again went unclaimed. Following the golfing event which had a great atmosphere, a cocktail party and prize giving ceremony took place. Finca Cortesín raises the bar for the circuit More than one hundred players enjoyed the circuit’s fifth qualifying event, at one of the best courses in the south of Europe. There was top quality golf and an unbeatable atmosphere during the last weekend of August. In terms of results, the special prizes were as follows: the Closest Ball to the Hole (played at 17) went to Sergery Lukjanchikov, while the Best Drive was won by Javier Mielgo. ÁLVARO QUIRÓS “MI RETO ESTA TEMPORADA ES VOLVER A ESTAR ENTRE LOS 60 MEJORES DE EUROPA” El golfista Álvaro Quirós hace balance de la campaña 2015 y plantea los retos y propósitos que se marca para el siguiente curso. Detalla varios aspectos de su nueva vida en Portugal, planes de entrenamiento y cómo ve el sector del golf en Sotogrande, así como su futuro como gran destino deportivo. Lo primero Álvaro, ¿cómo estás? Mejor, tras la temporada. Físicamente me encuentro muy bien, a excepción de la espalda que me ha dado problemas durante todo el año pero afortunadamente no me ha impedido jugar. Deportivamente no ha sido un buen año y estoy en ese momento de hacer balance y reflexionar qué cosas debo mejorar o cambiar. Me he marcado el inicio de temporada en Abu Dhabi [enero de 2016] y eso me da un margen de tiempo para una buena preparación o si tengo que realizar algún cambio en mi swing. Te he escuchado hablar alguna vez de falta de confianza más que de barreras por las lesiones. ¿Has recuperado tus buenas sensaciones? Precisamente en ello me encuentro. Quiero recuperar la motivación y necesito tener fe y querer que todo vaya a mejor. Ya llevo nueve años en el Circuito Europeo, de los cuales los tres últimos han sido una constante lucha. Tengo que recuperar la fe en mi juego y estar convencido de lograrlo. Me ha costado tiempo y esfuerzo saber por qué me pasan las cosas. Somos nosotros mismos los que tenemos que sacarnos hacia delante. Esa es la baza más importante que tengo que jugar. ¿ Qué porcentaje de influencia en el campo tiene lo físico y lo mental?; ¿cómo se entrena la mente para salir a jugar? Yo he estado muy bien físicamente durante toda la temporada, no he disputado demasiados torneos y he tenido un buen rendimiento en ese sentido. Obvia-

mente, siempre habrá algo físico que te incomode pero he sabido competir bien las jornadas. Por otro lado, el trabajo psicológico con gente especializada es fundamental. Lo importante es dar con el profesional ideal que se acerque a tu perfil. Pero la clave reside en lograr hacer un análisis más objetivo y no tan crítico. ¿Qué balance haces de esta temporada? 2015 ha sido un año en el que sí he recuperado la fe por momentos. Pero también he estado muy obsesionado con que no me divertía y no disfrutaba en el campo y sin embargo, viendo los números, ha sido la temporada en el que he cogido más ‘greenes’ y ‘calles’, pero me ha fallado el ‘putt’. Y si fallas en el ‘putt’ no puedes ser competitivo. ¿Ése sería el aspecto técnico a mejorar? Sí, me reuní con uno de los llamados ‘gurús’ del putt y con mi entrenador [Pepín Rivero] y tratamos de aclarar la situación y determinar si era algo mental o técnico. Lo estudiamos y estamos cambiando algunos detalles. Algo que ya noté en el último torneo, en Portugal. ¿Concretamente, en el Masters de Portugal conseguiste uno de los mejores resultados del año? Sí, estar entre los 20 primeros fue una buena noticia. Precisamente, el III Circuito de Golf La Revista de Sotogrande ha celebrado su Gran Final en el trazado Oceánico Victoria, ese campo

te debe resultar muy familiar… Claro, es donde entreno. Es un buen campo, es la joya de la corona del Grupo Oceánico en Portugal. Es el más competitivo y suele estar en unas condiciones magníficas. El ‘rough’ le jugó alguna mala pasada a los finalistas del circuito. Sí, estaba muy exigente para amateurs, incluso para los profesionales. ¿Cómo te va la vida en Portugal? No me puedo quejar. Está claro que echo de menos Sotogrande y especialmente Guadiaro, donde me he criado. Pero aquí estoy bien, el tiempo es bueno, las condiciones de práctica son buenas. No puedo decir que esté mal. Ahora que juegas fuera de casa, ¿cómo valoras los campos de la zona? Antes de vivir aquí ya conocía muchos destinos de golf y podía comparar la calidad de los campos de Sotogrande. Somos un ‘corner’, como me gusta llamarlo, muy especial; un rinconcito que es difícil de mejorar. Tanto por el tiempo, como por nuestra forma de vivir y por supuesto, los campos son muy competitivos. Recorridos como el de Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande o San Roque Club, son trazados excepcionales. Y luego, otros recorridos como La Reserva, Almenara, Alcaidesa, Finca Cortesín, La Duquesa o La Cañada son campos que siempre están a un gran nivel. Es muy complicado encontrar una zona como la nuestra con la calidad en campos de golf y con la calidad de vida que gozamos aquí.

¿Qué necesita Sotogrande para dar el paso definitivo como el mejor destino vinculado al golf ? En Europa no existe un destino de golf por excelencia, al margen de St. Andrews con el que por historia no se puede competir. Creo que la zona tiene un nivel de turismo que se ajusta a sus necesidades. En campos como Valderrama, Sotogrande o San Roque Club, no podemos olvidar que son de socios. Si se masificara el turismo no se podría contar con los estándares de calidad tan altos que disfruta cada persona que juega actualmente. Creo que sería complicado mantener este nivel si multiplicamos el turismo. La zona está bien así y es el sello que busca la gente que acude a Sotogrande para jugar al golf. ¿Está

para recuperar una gran competición internacional? Se encuentra preparado de sobra. Atraer competiciones de gran nivel no requiere necesariamente contar con un campo impresionante, hay que tener dinero, tener un gran patrocinador. Hace algunos años España tenía varios torneos del Circuito Europeo y la mayoría financiados por las empresas públicas. La crisis ha hecho mella en este sentido. Si fuese por campos, hay campos sobradamente preparados para un torneo internacional y de gran nivel pero el dinero, como en casi todo, es la llave. Para tener un gran torneo y para que acudan grandes jugadores. ¿Has tenido ocasión de conocer las mejoras de Valderrama? Sí. Están haciendo un gran traba-

jo pero la verdad, rara vez, he visto Valderrama mal. No sabría decir si lo estoy viendo extraordinariamente mejor ahora que hace ‘X’ años porque mentiría. La media de Valderrama siempre ha sido del más alto nivel y es difícil de mejorar. Una de las joyas de la zona es su gran cantera de golf… Afortunadamente tuve la suerte de ser uno de esos niños que salió de La Cañada y aún continúa teniendo muchos niños. Eso es muy importante, no por el número, sino por el cambio de concepto sobre el deporte del golf. ¿Cuál sería el siguiente paso para una mayor tecnificación deportiva de jóvenes? En ese caso, claro que es positivo contar con un Centro de Tecnificación pero no es imprescindible. El golf es un deporte lo suficientemente largo en el tiempo e individualista que si no explotas a temprana edad puedes hacerlo algo más tarde. Aunque como en todo, hay que tener la suerte de verse rodeado de una serie de factores más allá de lo deportivo para llegar a lo más alto. ¿Crees que próximamente puede salir un jugador profe-

sional de la zona? Siempre digo que he tenido la gran suerte de encontrarme a la gente ideal por el camino y de que mi golf se reflejase en los momentos precisos. Pero antes de eso hay muchas horas de trabajo y esfuerzo. Ser profesional, es relativamente fácil. Alguien que se lo haya propuesto desde pequeño, con la técnica y el entrenamiento preciso, puede lograrlo. Mantenerse es más complicado. ¿Sigues utilizando ese particular secreto en tu guante? Por momentos, sí (en referencia a algunas ‘chuletas’ que se anota en

su guante durante la competición). No es algo que utilice siempre pero en ocasiones noto en ciertos ‘tees’ un ‘feeling’ especial, algo en el swing y lo apunto. Alguna vez utilizo esa ‘triquiñuela’ (bromea). ¿Te planteas algún reto para la próxima temporada? Necesito tiempo para pensar en ello y tratar de ser lo más honesto posible. Pero posiblemente sería un buen objetivo volver a estar entre los 60 mejores de Europa durante el próximo año, teniendo en cuenta que llevo 4 años sin entrar en este ránking. Además, intentar de ganar algún torneo.

ÁLVARO QUIRÓS “MY CHALLENGE THIS SEASON IS TO GET BACK INTO THE TOP 60 IN EUROPE” The golfer Álvaro Quirós has given an assessment of the 2015 season and outlined his challenges and aims for the coming year. He details several aspects of his new life in Portugal, training plans and how he sees the golfing sector in Sotogrande, as well as its future as a great sporting destination. Firstly Álvaro, how are you? Better, following the season. Physically I am doing very well, apart from my back, which has given me problems throughout the year but fortunately it has not stopped me from playing. In terms of playing, it has not been a good year and at the moment I am assessing and reflecting on things that I need to improve or change. Abu Dhabi (January 2016) will be the start of my season and that gives me some time to prepare well or make changes to my swing if necessary. I have heard you talking before about a lack of confidence more than obstacles due to injuries. Are you feeling good again? Yes, that is where I am at the moment. I want to get my motivation back and I need to have faith and want everything to go better. I have been on the European Circuit for nine years already, and the last three of those have been a constant battle. I need to regain faith in my play and be convinced of achieving that. It has taken time and effort to find out why these things happen to me. We ourselves have to take responsibility for making progress. That is most important trick that I have to play. What level of influence do physical and psychological factors have out on the course? How do you train your mind for playing? Physically, I have been doing very well throughout the season, I have not played too many tournaments and I have performed well in that regard. Obviously, there will always be something physically that causes discomfort but I have been

able to play well. On the other hand, the psychological work with specialised lists is crucial. The important thing is to find a professional that meets your profile. However, the key aspect involves carrying out more objective and less critical analysis. What is your assessment of this season? 2015 has been the year when I have got my faith back at times. However, I have also been obsessed about the fact that I was not having a good time or enjoying myself on the course. However, looking at the statistics, it has been the season where I hit most greens and fairways, but my putting has been off. If you miss your putts, you cannot compete. Would that be the technical aspect you need to improve? Yes, I met up with one of the so-called putting gurus and with my coach (Pepín Rivero) and we tried to clarify the situation and determine whether it was something mental or technical. We studied it and we are changing some aspects. That is something I already noted in the last tournament, in Portugal. Specifically, at the Portugal Masters you managed one of your best results of the year? Yes, finishing in the top 20 was good news. In fact, the Grand Final of the 3rd edition of the Sotogrande Magazine Golf Circuit took place at Océanico Victoria, that course must be very familiar to you....

Of course, it is where I train. It is a good course, it is the jewel in the crown of the Grupo Oceánico’s courses in Portugal. It is the most competitive of their courses and it is usually in magnificent condition. The rough caused some problems for the finalists on the circuit. Yes, it was very demanding, even for professionals. How is life going for you in Portugal? I cannot complain. I of course miss Sotogrande and especially Guadiaro, where I grew up. However, I am doing well here, the weather is good, the practicing conditions are good. I cannot say that it is bad. Now that you are playing away from home, how do you assess the area’s courses? Before living here I already knew a lot of golfing destinations and I was able to compare the quality of the courses in Sotogrande. We are a corner as I like to call it, it is very special, a little corner that is hard to improve. That is due to the weather and also our way of life, and of course, the courses are very competitive. Courses such as Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and San Roque Club, are exceptional courses. Of course, others such as La Reserva, Almenara, Alcaidesa, La Duquesa and La Cañada are courses that are always at a very high level. It is very difficult to find an area like ours, with the quality of golf courses and with the quality of life that we enjoy here.

What does Sotogrande need to take the definitive step as the best destination linked to golf ? In Europe there is no golfing destination par excellence, apart from St. Andrews, which is impossible to compete with due to its history. I think that the area has a level of tourism that is adapted to its needs. As for courses such as Valderrama, Sotogrande and San Roque Club, we cannot forget that they are for members. If tourism were to become more massified it would not be possible to have such high standards of quality as those enjoyed by everyone that currently plays. I think that it would be complicated to maintain that level if we multiplied the level of tourism. The area is good as it is, and that is the hallmark of quality that those

who come to play in Sotogrande hope to find. Is Sotogrande ready to hold another big international competition? It is more than ready. Attracting top quality competitions does not necessarily require having an impressive course; you need money and a great sponsor. Some years ago Spain held several tournaments on the European Circuit and the majority were financed by public companies. The crisis had an impact in that regard. If we were just talking about courses, there are courses that are more than ready to hold a top level international tournament, but money, like in almost all matters,

is essential. It is necessary in order to have a great tournament and attract the big players. Have you had the chance to discover the improvements made to Valderrama? Yes. They are doing great work but the truth is that I have rarely seen Valderrama in poor condition. I cannot say that I think it is really much better that “X” number of years because I would be lying. The average level of Valderrama has always been the highest and it is difficult to improve on. One of the jewels in the area is its great golf academy… Fortunately I was luckily enough to be one of those children that came

out of La Cañada and it continues to train a lot of children. That is very important, not in terms of the number, but rather as a change in the concept of golf. There are few areas where practically anyone can have the chance to play this sport. La Cañada continues to enjoy good health. What would the next step be in terms of providing greater sports development for young people? In that regard, of course it is positive to have a Development Centre but it is not essential. Golf is a sport that has sufficient longevity in life and which is sufficiently individualistic in a way that if you do not play at an early age you can do

so later on. Although, like everything, you need to be lucky enough to be surrounded by a series of factors beyond sport in order to reach the highest levels. Do you think that a professional player will soon emerge from the area? I always say that I have been lucky to find ideal people along the way and that I was able to play my best golf at key times. However, above all, there are many hours of work and effort. Turning professional is relatively easy. Someone that has aimed for it from an early age can achieve it with technique and precise training. It is difficult to maintain that level of form.

Do you continue to use that particular secret on your glove? At times, yes I do (in reference to some “little notes” he keeps in his glove during competitions). It is not something that I always use but at times I have a special feeling on certain tees, something with my swing and I take a note. Sometimes I use that little trick (joking). Do you have any challenges for next season? I need time to think about it and try to be as honest as possible. However, a good challenge would possibly to get back into the top 60 in Europe next year, bearing in mind that I have not been in that ranking for 4 years. Also, I would like to try and win a tournament.

112 años después de que embocase el último putt de George Lyon, el golf regresa a unos Juegos Olímpicos. Será en Río de Janeiro donde los McIlroy, Spieth, García o Watson pugnen por morder una medalla de oro por la que se lleva luchando desde hace tiempo desde los principales organismos de este deporte. Desde el año 1904 el golf está ausente en los Juegos Olímpicos. Su estreno en un evento de esta magnitud fue en París 1900. 22 golfistas de cuatro naciones pugnaron en una competición masculina que venció el estadounidense Charls Sands y una femenina en la que triunfó su paisana Ives Abbott. Cuatro años después, en St. Louis, 74 estadounidenses y tres canadienses despidieron al golf

de los juegos. El canadiense Lyon logró el oro, y en la prueba por equipos, (no hubo femenina) la Asociación de Golf del Oeste brilló por encima del resto. Tras más de dos décadas de solicitudes y pugnas para que el golf regrese a la Villa Olímpica, el sueño se hizo realidad el 9 de octubre de 2009. La Asamblea del COI en Copenhague, en su 121ª sesión, aprobó la inclusión de dos deportes extra en los Juegos de Río’16 y Tokio’20: el rugby, y por supuesto, el golf. 63 votos a favor, 27 en contra y dos abstenciones fue el escrutinio. Los Juegos se mudan de Londres hasta Río de Janeiro. Entre el 5 y el 21 de agosto de 2016 miles de deportistas de todo el mundo competirán en discipli-

nas muy variadas por llevar la gloria a su país. El golf está fechado para la competición masculina entre el 10 y el 13 de agosto, mientras que para la femenina entre el 16 y el 19. A pesar de que Río de Janeiro contaba con dos campos de golf perfectamente capacitados para albergar la competición, desde la organización se optó por la construcción de uno nuevo. El diseñador estadounidense Gil Hanse fue el elegido para liderar un proyecto en la zona de Barra de Tijuana, junto a la reserva natural de Marapendi, con el nombre de Olympic Golf Course. Los 18 hoyos, a cinco minutos de la Villa Olímpica, tienen un aforo de 25.000 espectadores. Todo lo que envuelve esta nueva obra

está rodeado de polémica. Lo principal, la cercanía con un paraje natural en el que habitan especies en peligro de extinción. La tardanza y precariedad de las obras, otra controversia que levanta suspicacias entre los interesados por el golf olímpico. Lo que se refiere a modalidad de juego, será una competición Stroke Play. 60 golfistas masculinos y 60 golfistas femeninas disputarán 72 hoyos en cuatro días de competición para decidir qué tres jugadores se colocarán la corona de espina en el podio de oro, plata y bronce. El sistema de clasificación para los juegos fue elaborado por la Federación In-

ternacional de Golf (IGF), principal culpable de que este deporte vuelva a ser olímpico. Se desarrolla desde el 14 de julio de 2014 y concluye el 11 de julio de 2016. Está garantizada la presencia de un golfista brasileño, así como que los cinco continentes estarán representados en Río. Los primeros quince clasificados en el Ranking Olímpico de Golf se clasifican directamente con la excepción de que no puede haber más de cuatro golfistas de un mismo país dentro de ese Top 15. El resto de plazas se completa desde el puesto dieciséis en adelante, con un máximo de dos golfistas por país para aquellos que no tengan más de dos representantes dentro del Top 15. GOLF RETURNS TO THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE

112 years on from George Lyon sinking the last putt, golf is making its return to the Olympic Games. Río de Janeiro will be the stage where the likes of McIlroy, Spieth, García and Watson will be vying it out for a gold medal, something that for a long time has been fought for by the sport’s main governing bodies. Golf has been absent from the Olympic Games since 1904. The sport’s first appearance at an event of this magnitude was in Paris in 1900. 22 golfers from four different countries competed against each other in a men’s competition that was won by the USA’s Charles Sands and in a women’s competition in which fellow American Ives Abbott was crowned the champion. Four years later, in St. Louis, 74 Americans and three Canadians bid farewell to golf as an Olympic event. Canada’s George Lyon took the gold that year, and in the men’s team event (which replaced the women’s individual), the USA’s Western Golf Association prevailed over the rest of the competitors. Following two decades of struggle and requests to get golf reinstated as an Olympic sport, the dream became a reality on 9 October 2009. The 121st IOC Session, which was being held in Copenhagen, approved the inclusion of two extra sports for the Río 2016 and the Tokyo 2020 Games: rugby, and of course, golf. The results of the vote read 63 in favour, 27 against while two abstained. The Olympics make their way from London to Río de Janeiro. Between 5 and 21 August 2016 thousands of athletes from all over the world will be competing in a wide range of events in search of glory for their respective nations. The men’s golf event is scheduled to take place between 10 and 13 August, while the women’s will be held between 16 and 19. Although Río de Janeiro already has two golf courses perfectly capable of holding

the competition, the organisation has opted to build a new one. American designer Gil Hanse was chosen to lead the Olympic Golf Course project in the area of Barra de Tijuana, which sits beside the Marapendi natural reserve. The 18-hole course, located five minutes away from the Olympic Village, will be able to hold 25,000 spectators. The whole construction project is covered in a cloud of controversy. The main grievance is the proximity of the course to a natural area that acts as a habitat for various endangered species of wildlife. The delays and uncertainties about the construction is another issue that has raised suspicions among those with an interest in seeing golf at the Olympics. In terms of the format, a Stroke Play competition will be used. 60 male and 60 female golfers will play 72 holes over four days of competition to decide which three players will be presented with wreath crowns on the gold, silver and bronze podium. The qualifying system for these Games was conceived by the International Golf Federation (IGF), the main drivers behind the sport being reintroduced to the Olympics. Qualification will run from 14 July 2014 until 11 July 2016. The IGF has guaranteed that at least one golfer from the host nation and each of the five continents being represented in Río will qualify. The top fifteen on the Olympic Golf Ranking table will automatically qualify with the one exception that there can be no more than four golfers from the same country on this Top 15 list. The rest of the places will be filled from number sixteen onwards, with a maximum of two golfers per country for those nations without two representatives in the top 15. As of writing, Spain’s greatest hope of qualification is Sergio García, while Miguel Ángel Jiménez is the most likely to accompany him. Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Louis Oosthuizen, Hideki Matsuyama… the list of stars is going to be very large indeed although, barring a miracle, there will be one major absence: that of Tiger Woods. Golf aficionados, and thereby lovers of sport, are rejoicing. The Olympic Games, an unmissable event, will now include the enthralling game of golf. 2016 will be special. The Green Jacket, the Claret Jug and the Ryder Cup won’t be alone, as the laurel crown and the much sought-after gold medal will be included in a magical season of action.

Históricamente, el Tour ha acogido un mínimo de 20 torneos de 2 días de duración en cada edición, celebrados en varios de los mejores trazados de Málaga y Cádiz. Como buena parte de los eventos de la edición 2013/14 atrajeron una gran volumen de participantes, la organización se animó a buscar nuevas formas de aumentar el número de jugadores (durante una época del año en la que el número

de horas de luz es menor) para poder incrementar la cuantía de los premios. De ahí que en 2014/15 se llevaran a cabo una serie de citas de 3 días de duración, que se celebraban simultáneamente en 2 campos de golf (con un descanso después de 2 días). Estos contaron con una gran aceptación por parte de los participantes por lo que los eventos posteriores seguirían este formato. El objetivo de The Gecko Tour es “garantizar una experiencia de torneo única para nuestros jugadores”. En pocos años, Gecko ha logrado una notable presencia en el golf europeo y tiene la ventaja de no tener prácticamente competencia durante la temporada de invierno. Contar con un equipo sólido, experimentado y profesional le ha permite ofrecer un formato atractivo en campos internacionales de gran repercusión, por lo que Gecko Tour está a punto de convertirse en una competición muy influyente el golf continental. A pesar de su breve historia, The Gecko Tour puede alardear de ser el único tour profesional europeo, a tiempo completo, celebrado en España durante todo el año; siendo uno de las más reconocidos en invierno. In the 2015/2016 season, The Gecko Tour is heading into its fifth edition as one of the competitions with the biggest growth in value in the sector. Also, it has shown unconditional loyalty to its basic philosophy of offering the experience of an affordable and highly competitive tournament. The tour is played on the best courses in the area, with professional players (and amateurs with a low handicap) from across Europe during the winter months. It is also worth mentioning the new addition of a new logo and web page for the 2015/16 season.

From the outset, The Gecko Tour has taken place each year between October and the end of March, and its headquarters are in Marbella, right in the heart of the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain. Historically, each edition of the Tour has hosted a minimum of 20 tournaments each lasting 2 days, and they have been played on some of the best courses in Málaga and Cádiz. As a substantial number of events during the 2013/14 edition attracted a large amount of participants, the organisers set about looking for new ways to increase the number of players (during a period of the year when there are fewer hours of light) in order to increase the value of the prize. This is why a series of 3 day events took place in 2014/15, and they were held simultaneously on 2 golf courses (with a cut after 2 days). These events were warmly welcomed by the participants which is why subsequent events followed the format. The aim of The Gecko Tour is “to guarantee a unique tournament experience for our players”. In the space of a few years, Gecko has managed to gain a significant presence on the European golf scene and it has the added advantage of having practically no competition during the winter season. Having a solid, experienced, and professional team has enabled it to offer an appealing format for important international players, which is why The Gecko Tour is on the verge of becoming a very influential international golf tournament. Despite its short history, The Gecko Tour can boast of being the only professional, full-time, tour that is held in Spain throughout the entire year; and one of the most renowned during the winter season. Over the course of the last few years, The Gecko Tour has formed excellent relationships with important organisations such as the Spanish PGA, the Andalusian Golf Federation, the Alps Tour and the Czech PGA Tour, and this has enabled it to increase quality levels. Due to its success, The Gecko Tour also has an enormous number of followers on social networks through its active Twitter and Facebook accounts. John Parry got his first win on the European Tour when he won the 2010 Vivendi Cup. He then won in the final stage of six rounds of the Q School after playing on The Gecko Tour in order to comfortably retain his card for the 2013 European Tour.

The Gecko Tour is proud to announce that the Ernie Els for Autism Foundation has been chosen as the official charity for 2015/2016 In order to really highlight the work of this association, The Gecko Tour will hold a series of Pro-Ams to raise money for this important charity that fights to support families from South Africa and throughout the world that have been affected by autism. Ernie Els has a son named Ben that was diagnosed with autism at a very early age, and the famous and internationally renowned golfer has committed to promoting awareness about autism throughout the world, in an effort to fight the problem head on. This season, The Gecko Tour will hold four different events at the best courses on the coast, primarily Finca Cortesín, The San Roque Club and La Reserva Golf Club.

Amateur golfers will be able to play alongside the best professional European golfers selected from The Gecko Tour’s order of merit and players invited from the European Tour and Challenge Tour. Ernie Els has once again sent valuable objects of interest that will be auctioned and raffled off to promote fundraising efforts. The Gecko Tour tuvo el honor de organizar el primer Ernie Els for Autism Pro-Am Charity Golf Day celebrado en España y que se celebró en el trazado de La Reserva de Sotogrande, en marzo de 2015, como conclusión del Gecko Masters 2014/2015. La organización agradeció enormemente el apoyo “de todos los participantes, ya fueran jugadores, patrocinadores o simplemente las personas que colaboraron con la compra de papeletas” en el evento. Se pudo recaudar gracias a todo ello una cantidad considerable de dinero.

The Gecko Tour had the honour of organising the first Ernie Els for Autism Pro-Am Charity Golf Day held in Spain, which took place at La Reserva de Sotogrande course, in March 2015, as the concluding event of the 2014/15 Gecko Masters. The organisation was enormously grateful for the support “of all of the participants, whether players, sponsors or simply the people that collaborated by buying tickets” at the event. LA OPINIÓN PROFESIONAL # ALFREDO GARCÍA El año pasado fue mi primera vez en el Gecko Tour, y este año los campos están muy fuertes. Ya sólo eso hará que el torneo crezca rápidamente. Los buenos campos de golf y un premio más alto haría del Gecko Tour uno de los más consolidados del mundo. Creo que, para crecer rápido, lo único que necesita el Gecko es el respaldo de unos campos de calidad y más patrocinadores. Entre octubre y marzo no hay ninguna cita para los jugadores de primera aparte del Gecko Pro Tour, y no me quiero ni imaginar el nivel que habría en el campo si la cantidad del premio fuera mayor. Aquí hay que apuntar bajo si se quiere ganar, y es una preparación excelente para todo el mundo. Last year was my first year on The Gecko Tour and this year the fields are very strong.

That alone will make the tour grow quickly. Good golf courses and a higher prize fund would make The Gecko Tour one of the established tours in the world. I think if the Gecko Tour wants to grow quickly it only needs to find the backing of good courses and more sponsors. There is nowhere for the top players to play between October and March other than on the Gecko Pro Tour and I can only imagine what the fields would be like with higher prize money. You need to shoot low here if you want to win and it is brilliant preparation for everybody.

I think it is great. You have online updated scores, really good players, you play on some of the best courses, It makes sense. The boys from the Challenge Tour are coming here now as they have nowhere else to play so you have a very good standard of competition. It very tough during this time of the year to get the weather for a good competition but you guys seem to be doing a really good job. I hope you guys can grow and get bigger and bigger every year.
