Sujeta entre sus manos una de las ediciones más especiales de este curso 2023 de El Periódico de Sotogrande, algo que no es precisamente sencillo, teniendo en cuenta todo el alto volumen de eventos que llevamos recorridos este calendario, incluido el 25 aniversario y bodas de plata, precisamente de este periódico. Hacemos especial hincapié porque consideramos esta edición un buen ejemplo de la personalidad y filosofía que guarda con la comunidad de residentes y su área de influencia El Periódico de Sotogrande. Por el volumen, diversidad y diferentes perfiles que se manejan en las informaciones que aparecen. Todo un muestrario para analizar los intereses y sensibilidades del entorno que en pocos lugares se conocen e interpretan como en Grupo HCP Sotogrande. Es igual de importante para nuestra comunidad denunciar aspectos como la taponada y bloqueada desembocadura del río Guardiaro, un problema cíclico de la zona, así como dar a conocer todos los parabienes de importantes eventos como la Solheim Cup o el EDAM 2023. Pero también es igual de importante dar a conocer historias personales como el cierre por jubilación de La Alberiza o el Campeonato de España de Catamaranes con las jóvenes promesas de la Escuela de Vela en Sotogrande. Eso sí, nunca nos han pesado los pies para ir a buscar el interés de los lectores. Capaces de estar pendientes, prácticamente como único medio nacional, al desarrollo del Abierto de Polo de Hurlingham, de la Triple Corona Argentina o coger un avión y plantarnos en directo, con nuestras publicaciones en la mano, en el campo Marco Simone de Golf de Roma para vivir en directo y contar una Ryder Cup.

Communicating to and about Sotogrande You are holding one of the most special editions of 2023 of El Periódico de Sotogrande, something that is not exactly straightforward, bearing in mind the high volume of events that we have experienced this year, including the 25th birthday and silver anniversary of this newspaper. We are especially emphasising this because we believe that this edition is a good example of the character and philosophy that El Periódico de Sotogrande has with the community of residents and its area of influence. Due to the volume, diversity and different profiles that are handled in the information that is featured. A real showcase to analyse the interests and sensibilities of the area which is known and interpreted in few places like at Grupo HCP Sotogrande. It is equally important for our community to report aspects such as the blockage and clogging of the Guadiaro river, a cyclical problem in the area, and to also promote all the celebrations of important events such as the Solheim Cup or the EDAM 2023. However, it is equally important to showcase personal stories such as the closure of La Alberiza due to retirement or the Spanish Catamaran Championship with the young hopefuls of the Sailing School in Sotogrande. Having said that, we have never been reluctant to go in search of the interests of readers. We are capable of following, practically like a single national media outlet, the action of the Hurlingham Polo Open, the Argentine Triple Crown or to take a plane and be on the ground live, with our publications to hand, at the Marco Simone Golf Course in Rome in order to experience and report a Ryder Cup live. Una oportunidad brillante para Sotogrande Hay momentos especiales, ciclos y oportunidades de mercado, exposición y proyección para un destino, a nivel económico y desarrollo, que aparecen en momentos determinados. Ser los suficientemente ávidos para identificarlos y aprovecharlos, es una virtud y a la vez una responsabilidad de sus máximos dirigentes. Este rincón atraviesa uno de ellos, dentro de su propia personalidad e idiosincrasia a niveles financieros. En un contexto internacional atravesamos un periodo de incertidumbre desde hace más de un año con la guerra en Ucrania y que ahora se multiplica con el conflicto en Gaza; sin duda, cuestiones que en el tablero internacional y la macro-economía cuenta con un peso específico. Pero colocando la lupa, poniendo el foco, se están abriendo en los últimos tiempos unas nuevas ventanas y oportunidades en el destino Sotogrande y su área de influencia como en pocos momentos de las últimas décadas, especialmente en este ciclo económico que a raíz de la salida de la pandemia tanto ha oxigenado todo el entorno. La presencia de LIV Golf en el Real Club Valderrama, la Solheim Cup [uno de los eventos de deporte femenino más importantes del planeta] a sólo un paso en Finca Cortesín y tan sólo dentro de unos días [horas, depende de cuando sujete este ejemplar], el torneo con mayor bolsa de premios en muchos años en España con el EDAM del DP World en el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, una incorporación de cinco estrellas al elenco de eventos en el entorno. Pero no sólo de golf vive este resort. Mirando atrás, al menos desde 2019 ha habido once ocasiones donde el Ayuntamiento de San Roque tuvo que asumir esta labor, “a pesar de que es competencia de la Junta de Andalucía según un informe de la Abogacía del Estado y porque el estuario es espacio natural protegido, al formar parte de la Red Natura 2000”, se detalla desde el Ayuntamiento.

Also, the Council itself on this occasion, as in so many previous ones, stated that “it has taken on this job when in reality it is the responsibility of the Regional Government of Andalusia, for environmental and health reasons, and they will claim invoices for the amounts paid in recent years from the regional Government by requesting to be refunded”. The blockage of the mouth of the Guadiaro is a recurring matter each summer due to the low water volume of the river and the accumulation of sand caused by the eastern wind. Sotogrande, como entorno educativo de primer nivel, se muestra nuevamente como referencia en el escaparate internacional. La prestigiosa publicación ‘Financial Times’ publica un reportaje en el que repasa las últimas tendencias por las escuelas internacionales alternativas y entre ellas aparece la escuela bosque de Sotogrande Alma Forest, como referencia de centro que combina la base académica con la cercanía con el entorno natural. Alma Forest se encuentra en Sotogrande, y establece entre sus grandes objetivos educativos que los niños aprendan de

una forma diferente, rodeados del exterior, contemplando la naturaleza y aprendiendo cerca de ella. La Alberiza, Bar Restaurante de Sotogrande cerró sus puertas por jubilación el día 22 de septiembre, tras 34 años de trabajo y dedicación a sus clientes en San Roque. Sus

propietarios José María Larios y Genoveva recieron durante los días previos al cierre el cariño y numerosas muestras de reconocimiento por parte de clientes, amigos y medios de comu-

nicación de toda la Comarca. Se dice pronto pero son muchos dando un servicio de calidad y atención a los paladares de Sotogrande y todo el Campo de Gibraltar.

Por supuesto, desde El Periódico de Sotogrande no quisimos perder la oportunidad de estar el último día de La Alberiza entre sus fogones y despedir por todo lo alto a Jose

Adjudicada la obra de un Skate Park en Torreguadiaro La empresa Infeven Solutions SL ha sido la adjudicataria de la obra de “Construcción de zona de Skate Park en el Paseo Marítimo de Torreguadiaro”, por importe de 170.000 euros (IVA incluido). El plazo de ejecución es de seis meses, y constará con dos espacios a distinto nivel para practicar el patinaje en sus distintas modalidades. El alcalde, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, ha anunciado la adjudicación del contrato para la construcción de una zona de Skate Park en el Paseo Marítimo de Torreguadiaro. Explicó que se trata de una obra incluida en el Plan de Inversiones municipal, y en este caso será “una nueva

instalación deportiva y de ocio” que había demandado la población del Valle del Guadiaro. Recordó el compromiso del Equipo de Gobierno de dotar de espacios de este tipo a cada una de las cuatro zonas en las que se divide el municipio. En los lugares donde ya se encuentran son: en San Roque Ciudad, junto a la Casa Consistorial, y en Villa Victoria, donde se unen Puente Mayorga y Campamento. “Ahora invertimos más de 170.000 euros -apuntó Ruiz Boix- para un nuevo skate park para el Valle del Guadiaro, más concretamente en la zona de

los aparcamientos del Paseo Marítimo de Torreguadiaro. Será una pista de hormigón distinta de las ya existentes en el municipio”. Agregó que la ejecución de la obra se ha establecido en seis meses, así que espero que para la primavera de 2024 esté a disposición de los jóvenes, especialmente los del Valle del Guadiaro”, concluyó el alcalde. El teniente de alcalde delegado de Contratación, Óscar Ledesma, ha señalado que “se aceptaron cinco de las seis ofertas presentadas, siendo la de Infeven la de menor cuantía económica, por lo que finalmente consiguió la licitación. De nuevo queda demostrado que el Ayuntamiento de San Roque ofrece a las empresas constructoras una solvencia económica que hace que nuestras obras les resulten atractivas, lo que finalmente redunda en un ahorro para las arcas municipales”. “Espero -dijo- que la obra comience en breve y que en los primeros meses del próximo año la población del Valle del Guadiaro pueda disfrutar de unas instalaciones muy deman-

dadas, y que servirán para fomentar el ocio deportivo entre nuestros jóvenes”, concluyó. La obra de “Construcción de zona de Skate Park en el Paseo Marítimo de Torreguadiaro” se ha adjudicado Infeven Solutions S.L por un importe de 170.954 euros (IVA incluido), con un plazo máximo de ejecución de seis meses. Se ocupará una superficie de 420 metros cuadrados aproximadamente, El espacio se sub-

dividirá en dos zonas niveladas de distinta cota, la superior llamada “Street” y la inferior “Bowl”. La primera contará con distintos elementos patinables, mientras que la “Bowl” tendrá además con uno central consistente en un vaciado en forma de curvas, con planta en forma de riñón y pavimentado en hormigón armado curvo rematado en la parte alta con piedra artificial ejecutada “in situ”.

Construction work of Skate Park awarded in Torreguadiaro The company Infeven Solutions SL was awarded the work for the “Construction of a Skate Park area on Torreguadiaro Promenade”, for an amount of 170,000 Euros (including VAT). The implementation period is six months, and it will feature two spaces at different levels for different forms of skating. The mayor, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, announced the awarding of the contract for the construction of a zona Skate Park area on Torreguadiaro Promenade. He explained that the work is included in the municipal Investment Plan, and in this case it will be “a new sports and leisure facility” that had been requested by the population of Valle del Guadiaro. He recalled the commitment of the Government Team to provide spaces of this kind in each of the four zones that the municipality is divided into. In places where they already are: in San Roque Ciudad, next to the Town Hall, and in Villa Victoria, where Puente Mayorga and Campamento meet. It will be a concrete arena different to those that currently exist in the municipality.” He added that the implementation of the work has been established for six months, so I hope

The mayoral delegate for Contracting, Óscar Ledesma, stated that “five of the six bids submitted were accepted, Infeven’s was the most affordable, therefore it ultimately won the tender. Once again, it has been shown that the Council of San Roque offers construction companies economic solvency that makes our works attractive, which ultimately results in savings for the municipal coffers.” He said “I hope that the work will begin shortly and that over the coming months of next year the

population of Valle del Guadiaro can enjoy facilities that are much sought-after, which will be used to encourage sporting leisure among our young people” he concluded. The work on the “Construction of

a Skate Park area on Torreguadiaro Promenade” was awarded to Infeven Solutions S.L for an amount of 170,954 Euros (including VAT) with a maximum implementation period of six months. It will cover a surface area of

approximately 420 square metres, the space will be sub-divided into two areas at different heights, the upper one named “Street” and the bottom one “Bowl.” The former will have different skateable elements, while

the “Bowl”, in addition to having a central bowl which is a circular hole will have a kidney shaped area and paved in curved reinforced concrete finished at the top with artificial stone created “in situ.”

Golf y turismo de calidad Como estamos comprobando nuevamente en estas fechas, el golf es un deporte en el que Sotogrande es un destino privilegiado. Sabemos que España lidera los viajeros internacionales que acuden a nuestro país a jugar o a asistir a torneos importantes. Entre los españoles, con casi 300.000 federados, el golf es el cuarto deporte, después del fútbol, el baloncesto y la caza. Y, por supuesto, desde hace años nuestros profesionales destacan en los grandes campeonatos en todo el mundo. Pero, además, el golf ejerce un considerable impacto económico, y está asociado con un tipo de turismo que siempre decimos que es aquel por el que debe apostar España: el turismo de calidad. En efecto, estamos hablando de más de un millón de turistas que vienen atraídos por el golf, un de-

Adrián Otaegui Jugador de Golf - Ganador EDAM 2022

“Sotogrande es el destino del golf en Europa por excelencia” gan teniendo esos referentes. Como deportista es lo que valoro y lo que me gusta, esa afición permite luego ver a los Jon Rahm, Sergio García y demás, que han llegado a lo más alto. El torneo guarda su esencia y valor histórico a pesar del cambio de escenario, dentro de la misma urbanización de Sotogrande. De una sede tan legendaria como Real Club Valderrama ahora pasa a otro de los campos más emblemáticos de Europa como es el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ¿qué relación tienes con él? Sí, como decís este año hay un cambio de sede, pasa de un campo legendario como Valderrama a uno de los mejores campos de Europa como es el Real Club de Sotogrande. Tenéis mucha suerte en Sotogrande de tener campos de primer nivel mundial, una meAdrián, un placer contar contigo en nuestras páginas. Te lo habrán preguntado estos días en multitud de ocasiones, pero no me resisto. ¿Sería increíble repetir triunfo en el EDAM 2023? Sería increíble volver a repetir triunfo en el Estrella DAM Andalucía Masters como lo hice el año pasado por varios motivos. Le tengo muchísimo cariño a esta tierra, tengo muchos tanto en Málaga como en Cádiz: en Guadiaro y en Sotogrande, sería espectacular levantar de nuevo el trofeo. Ya de por sí, jugar en Sotgrande, tanto en el ‘Real’ como en Valderrama es un lujo, noto el cariño y el apoyo de público, te sientes que juegas en casa. Luego, esto es deporte, es golf y cada torneo es un mundo, en cuatros días pasan muchas todo. Pero de partida, voy con mucha motivación y ganas de darlo todo. Prometo dejarme el corazón. ¿Qué supuso esa victoria tan arrolladora en Valderrama y un

resultado tan espectacular? Emocionante y muy especial. Fue mi primera victoria delante de mi público. También fue mi primer torneo europeo y lo gané en presencia de mis padres, mis amigos; fue increíble compartir con ellos esa semana inolvidable del Estrella Damm. Antes ya la tenía a Valderrama le tenía un cariño diferente, es un campo único; fue todo un honor ganar e inscribir mi nombre junto al resto de campeones en el Real Club Valderrama. Estamos disfrutando de una gran explosión del golf en España: LIV en Valderrama, Solheim Cup en Finca Cortesín, Open de España, …, y ahora Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters en el ‘Real’. ¿Cómo valoras esta gran apuesta y proyección del golf en España? Históricamente, en el extranjero nos ven como un país de golf y un país con historia de golf, con grandes torneos, con grandes campos de golf, pero internamiente no nos lo cree-

mos tanto. Con la Solheim Cup en Cortesín, el LIV en Valderrama, el EDAM en Sotogrande o el Open de España, se muestran la selección de torneos de gran nivel y que atraen a varios de los mejores jugadores del mundo. El público español se merece grandes torneos para seguir creando afición, para crear cantera y los jóvenes si-

teorología increíble, …, es un lujo jugar en Sotogrande. Tengo buen recuerdo de Real de Sotogrande por haber jugado una copa de Jerez, creo que fue en 2009/2010, me encanta el campo. La última vez que jugué fue hace 5 o 6 años en una vuelta de práctica con Álvaro Quirós y Jordi García del

Moral, pero creo que fue antes de los cambios. Estoy con muchas ganas de ver los cambios, los hoyos nuevos y cómo va a estar todo preparado. ¿Qué sensaciones te transmite el ‘Real’ para tu juego? Es un campo con unas condiciones espectaculares, greenes rápidos y creo que se puede adaptar bien a mi juego. Sotogrande es uno de los destinos con mejores campos de golf, en calidad, por metro cuadrado, ¿qué referencias tiene de otros campos como La Hacienda o The San Roque Club? Sotogrande es el destino de golf por excelencia en Europa, al margen de Escocia. Llevo viniendo a Sotogrande desde pequeño, he jugado campeonatos en La Cañada, he jugado en el ‘Real’, en San Roque Club, etc. Es más, tengo una anécdota fantástica, ya que pude jugar nueve hoyos con Seve y Enrique Ponce cuando yo tendría 12 o 13 años en The San Roque Club. También he ido mucho a Finca Cortesín, lo dicho, le tengo mucho cariño a todo lo que es la zona de Sotogrande Con 14/15 años, antes de pasar a profesional, solía escaparme en invierno con mis padres a la zona de Sotogrande a entrenar un poco para entrenar con viento, a campos que no estaba acostumbrado en el norte para seguir mejorando mi juego. Es un lugar increíble. Mucha suerte en esta nueva edición del EDAM y esperamos verle el 22 de octubre levantando nuevamente el trofeo y brindando con una de esas cervezas. Muchas gracias a todos y espero el domingo por la tarde poderme tomarme una Estrella Damm con todos vosotros bien fresquita, señal que tenemos algo importante para celebrar. Un abrazo.

“Sotogrande is the European golf destination par excellence” Adrián, it is a pleasure to have you among our pages. You will have been asked this several times in recent days, but I cannot resist. Would it be incredible to win again at EDAM 2023? It would be incredible to win again at the Estrella DAM Andalucía Masters as I did last year, for several reasons. I have a lot of affection for this region, I have lots of friends in both Malaga and Cádiz: in Guadiaro and in Sotogrande, it would be spectacular to lift the trophy again. And in itself, playing in Sotogrande, both at “Real” and at Valderrama, is a luxury, I feel the affection and support of the crowd, you feel that you are playing at home. Then, this is sport, golf, and each tournament is a universe, lots happens over four days. But to start, I have lots of motivation and enthusiasm to give everything. I promise to give everything in my heart. What did that really dominant victory at Valderrama and such a spectacular result mean? It was exciting and very special. It was my first victory in front of my crowd. It was also my first European tournament and I won it in the presence of my parents, my friends; it was incredible to share that incredible week of the Estrella Damm with them. Before, I already had a different kind of affection for Valderrama, it is a unique course; it was a real honour to win and etch my name alongside the other champions at Real Club Valderrama. We are enjoying a great explo-

sion of golf in Spain: LIV at Valderrama, Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesín, the Open de España, …, and now the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters at the ‘Real’. How do you view this great commitment and projection of golf in Spain? History, abroad we are viewed as a golfing country and a country with a golfing history, with great tournaments, great golf courses, but internally we don’t believe it so much. The Solheim Cup at Cortesín, LIV at Valderrama, the EDAM at Sotogrande and the Open de España, show the selection of top level tournaments which attract several of the world’s best players. The Spanish public deserves great tournaments in order to continue creating fans, creating young players and for young people to continue to have those role models. That is what I value and like as a sportsperson, that passion then makes it possible to see players like Jon Rahm, Sergio García, and others, who have reached the highest level. The tournament maintains its essence and historic value despite the change of scene, within the resort of Sotogrande. From such a legendary venue as Real Club Valderrama, it is now moving to another of the most emblematic courses in Europe, the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, what is your relationship with it? Yes, as you say, this year there is a change of venue, it is moving from a legendary course like Valderrama to one of the best courses in Europe, Real

Club de Sotogrande. You are really lucky in Sotogrande to have to level global courses, incredible weather... It is a luxury to play in Sotogrande. I have good memories from Real de Sotogrande due to playing a Jerez Cup, I think it was in 2009/20010, I love the course. The last time I played it was 5 or 6 years ago in a practice round with Álvaro Quirós and Jordi García del Moral, but I think that was before the changes. I am really looking forward to seeing the changes, the new holes, and how everything is going to be prepared. What vibes does “Real” give you for your play? It is a course with spectacular conditions, quick greens and I think that it can adapt well to

my play. Sotogrande is one of the destinations with the best golf courses, in terms of quality, per square metre, what experience do you have from other courses such as La Hacienda and The San Roque Club? Sotogrande is the golfing destination par excellence in Europe, aside from Scotland. I have been coming to Sotogrande since I was little, I have played championships at La Cañada, I have played at ‘Real’, at San Roque Club, etc. Furthermore, I have a fantastic anecdote, as I was able to play nine holes with Seve and Enrique Ponce when I was 12 or 13 years old at The San Roque Club. I have also gone a lot to Finca Cortesín, having said that, I

have a lot of affection for the entire Sotogrande area. Aged 14/15, before turning professional, I used to go on a winter getaway with my parents to the Sotogrande zone to train a little in order to train with wind, with courses I wasn’t used to playing in order to continue improving my play. It is an incredible place. Lots of luck in this new edition of the EDAM and we hope to see you on 22 October once again lifting the trophy and toasting with one of those beers. Un regalo de Trent Jones a Sotogrande y al mundo • El Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, un referente en Europa desde su construcción en los años 60. Avanzada su carrera, Robert Trent Jones se enorgullecía al decir que el sol no se ponía en sus campos, dado que el mítico diseñador estadounidense de origen británico dejó su firma en recorridos de 35 países repartidos por todo el mundo. La perfecta integración del recorrido entre las dunas y los alcornoques de la zona, la variedad que ofrecen sus hoyos variopintos y la exigencia de su trazado han servido para poner a prueba a los mejores jugadores del continente, tanto en la histórica Copa de Sotogrande, por la que han pasado los mejores amateurs

de Europa (muchos de ellos con exitosa trayectoria profesional posterior) como en los torneos de élite que ha albergado el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. “El diseño de Robert Trent Jones supuso una gran novedad en el golf europeo, fue el primero sembrado con Bermuda 419 y dotado con riego automático. Desde el principio entusiasmó a los mejores jugadores por sus enormes tees de salida, amplísimas calles, bunkers blancos con formas espectaculares, greenes rápidos, grandes, y lagos que afectaban hasta siete hoyos. Fue y sigue siendo un exce-

lente test de golf en el que se divierten jugadores de todos los niveles”, explica el director de campo, Patrick Allende. Pese al paso del tiempo, este recorrido que está a punto de cumplir 60 años mantiene su absoluta vigencia gracias a la esmerada labor del equipo de greenkeeping liderado por Patrick Allende y a la remodelación llevada a cabo durante 2015 y 2017 a cargo del arquitecto Roger Rulewich, estrecho colaborador de Robert Trent Jones, y David Fleury, con la imprescindible supervisión de Allende. La recuperación de la bermuda en tees,

calles y roughs, y del Agrostis A4 en los greenes tal vez sea el aspecto más llamativo de una profunda labor de restauración, aunque alcanzó muchos otros ámbitos para que el espíritu del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ideado por Robert Trent Jones siga más vivo que nunca. “Los greenes habían perdido una parte importante de su superficie, era necesario recuperarlos para devolver al campo su carácter original. La restauración se llevó a cabo con gran fidelidad al diseño original, de hecho, se tomaron como referencia los dibujos

realizados a mano por Jones”, indica Allende. “Los greenes incorporaron las especificaciones de construcción USGA más modernas y fue uno de los primeros campos en Europa que instaló el sistema de extracción de aire a través de los drenajes, Sub air. Se construyeron, además, 37 kilómetros de drenajes en todo el campo y se utilizaron 75.000 toneladas de arena silícea que nos permiten llevar a cabo un mantenimiento mucho más eficiente y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental”, añade el director de campo.

Desde sus inicios, el golf ha desempeñado un papel fundamente en la historia de la urbanización de Sotogrande. Desde su fundación, en los inicios del resort, el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ocupó un papel central en la vida de los residentes, tanto a nivel deportivo y social.

Tal era la importancia que se le dio, que se podría decir que Sotogrande se moldeó entorno a su Real Club de Golf. Mc Micking le encargó el diseño a Robert Trent Jones con la idea de construir alrededor de él lo que hoy es Sotogrande.

Sotogrande fue el primer trabajo del diseñador en Europa y marcó un hito en la construcción de campos a este lado del Atlántico, no solo por el soberbio diseño que realizó el maestro Trent Jones, sino por las innovaciones que rodearon el proyecto: fue el primer campo de Europa sembrado con Bermuda 419 y el primero en instalar un sistema de riego totalmente automatizado.

Sotogrande fue el escenario del Campeonato de España Amateur de 1983; también resuena aún la victoria en 1987 de Severiano Ballesteros en el Campeonato de España de Profesionales, una cita inolvidable.

A golf course tailor-made for Sotogrande From its very beginnings, golf has played a central role in the history of the Sotogrande development. From its foundation in the resort’s early days, the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande occupied a central role in the lives of the residents, both sportingly and socially. Such was the importance given to it, that it could be said that Sotogrande was moulded around its Real Club de Golf. Mc Micking commissioned Robert Trent Jones to design the course with the idea of building around it what is now Sotogrande.

The Sotogrande Golf Course was completed in 1963 and the Club was constituted in 1964, being considered one of the best in Europe, with two courses, one of 18 holes and the other of 9 holes. For many years, the club was the meeting point for the people of Sotogrande, who enjoyed golf, parties and the general social life created around this special meeting point.

Sotogrande was the designer’s first work in Europe and marked a milestone in the construction of courses on this side of the Atlantic, not only for the superb design by the master Trent Jones, but also for the innovations that surrounded the project: it was the first course in Europe to be sown with Bermuda 419 and the first to install a fully automated irrigation system.

In 1966, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande experienced its first major event with the best players in Europe in the Spanish Open, won by Roberto de Vicenzo with 279 strokes. In 1970 the Jerez Cup was born, the origin of the current European Nations Championship Real Club de Golf Sotogrande Cup, which welcomes every year the best amateurs from twenty European countries and which has winners such as Padraig Harrington, Sergio García, or Rory McIlroy. In 1973 the 7th European Women’s Amateur Championship was held in Sotogrande, where the English team was proclaimed winner, followed by France, Sweden and Spain. The Club was part of the Sotogrande Urbanisation until 1979, when the members bought the

course, giving rise to what is now considered one of the best members’ clubs in Europe. Sotogrande was the setting for the Spanish Amateur Championship

in 1983, and the 1987 victory of Severiano Ballesteros in the Spanish Professional Championship is still fresh in our minds, an unforgettable event.

“Acoger un torneo así nos permite mostrar la joya que es el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande” Un placer y aún más a sólo unos días de uno de los eventos que más interés ha levantado en la comunidad en los últimos meses: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande acoge un evento profesional de primer nivel como es el Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters del DP World. ¿Cómo nace esta oportunidad? Así es. Al club se le presentó una ocasión extraordinaria para embarcarse en un proyecto y una apuesta de este calibre. Es de sobra conocido el motivo por el que el EDAM deja de celebrarse en Valderrama y rápidamente notamos el interés del DP World por seguir manteniendo uno de sus torneos más importantes en Sotogrande. Sabíamos que competíamos con otras sedes destacadas, pero al notar ese interés comenzamos a valorar internamente esta gran oportunidad. Es evidente que el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande no tiene esa vocación de organizar eventos de estas características, pero parte de mi gestión es trasladar a la directiva estas oportunidades, valorar sus beneficios a la entidad y evaluar su repercusión. Finalmente decidimos dar un paso al frente y comenzamos a ne-

gociar un acuerdo que estoy convencido dará un resultado sobresaliente. El club, uno de los más emblemáticos del sur de Europa, está más que preparado para organizar y albergar un torneo de tal magnitud. Hace tan sólo unos años, la rehabilitación integral del recorrido, reforzó la posición del campo en el más alto escalafón en cánones de mantenimiento y calidad. La decisión de acometer la gran reforma en 2015/2016, con la junta de Felipe Oriol, supuso un antes y un después para el club. La entidad se lanzó a una gran inversión, con un proyecto espectacular, que a día de hoy supone uno de los grandes valores del club de cara al futuro. Rediseñar los

greenes, recuperar los diseños originales del 1964 y toda la ‘bermuda’, permitieron conseguir el impecable estado actual del campo, preparado para los retos del Siglo XXI, una auténtica joya de golf en Europa. En ese momento ya pudimos ver algunas señales, como la construcción de salidas ‘negras’ o alargar el recorrido hasta los 6.500, de lo que podría venir en un futuro. ¿Puede adelantarnos algunos detalles sobre la organización y la logística? Entrada del público, accesos, village, etc. La entrada principal estará ubicada en Paseo del Parque, justo antes de la curva del búnker. Se accederá al club a través de una plataforma elevada que dará conectará con la zona del village, ubicada en

el campo corto. Ahí se dispondrá el control de acceso y los asistentes disfrutarán de una espectacular extensión verde con todo el espacio village (restauración, tiendas, marcas, una gran pantalla, etc.); Desde ahí, podrán tomar diferentes direcciones: zona del hoyo 2, casa club, tienda del club, zona de prácticas, etc. El espectacular montaje que estamos preparando permitirá ver imágenes y zonas muy atractivas, junto a los jugadores, y diferentes a otros campos (zona de prácticas, campo corto, etc.). También tendremos espacios de esparcimiento y ocio familiar. Habrá muchas sorpresas y muy atractivas. Estamos disfrutando de un año inolvidable para el golf en la zona: LIV en Valderrama, Solheim Cup en Finca Cortesín, ahora EDAM en el ‘Real’, ¿somos conscientes del destino tan increíble de golf que tenemos a nivel internacional? Era una de nuestras principales bazas a la hora de tomar la decisión de acoger el Estrella Damm. Este 2023 es un año muy trascendente para la comunidad del golf y especialmente de esta zona: LIV en Valderrama, Solheim Cup en Finca Cortesín y el Open de

España Femenino en Las Brisas. Tener la oportunidad de sumar a ese plante de eventos una cuarta cita del DP Wolrd en Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, convierte este curso en inolvidable. No aprovechar esta ola y dejar que el torneo se marche a otro enclave, no no los hubiésemos perdonado; no sólo por el club, por todo lo que supone para el destino. La exposición es brutal y los beneficios serán enormes no sólo el sector del golf, todo el sector servicios suma enteros, es la naturaleza de un destino de este nivel. Por último, un deseo y una bienvenida para todas aquellas personas que hayan comprado ya su entrada y vayan a visitar la urbanización y el club la semana del torneo. “Hosting a tournament like this allows us to showcase the jewel that is Real Club de Golf Sotogrande”. It is a pleasure and even more so just a few days from one of the events that has created most interest in the community over recent months: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is hosting a first-class professional event, the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters of the DP World Tour. How did this opportunity arise? Indeed. The club was presented with an extraordinary opportunity to embark on a project and an initiative of this calibre. It is very well-known why the EDAM stopped being held at Valderrama and we quickly noted the interest of the DP World Tour in keeping one of its most important tournaments in Sotogrande. We knew that we were competing with other outstanding venues, but upon noting that interest we began to internally evaluate this great opportunity. It is clear that Real Club de Golf Sotogrande does not have the vocation of organising events of these characteristics, but part of my management involves informing the management about these opportunities, assessing the benefits for the club and evaluating their impact. In the end, we decided to take a step forward and we began to negotiate an agreement that I am convinced will offer an outstanding result. The club, one of the most iconic in southern Europe, is more than ready to organise and host a tournament of such magnitude. Just a few years ago, the complete remodelling of the course, strengthened the position of the course at the highest level in terms of maintenance and quality. The decision to undertake the major revamp in 2015/2016, with the board of Felipe Oriol, marked a turning point for the club. The entity embarked on a major investment, with a spectacular project, which is currently one of the club’s major assets looking to the future. Redesigning the greens, bringing back the original designs of 1964 and all the bermuda, made it possible to achieve the impeccable current condition of the course, ready for the challenges of the 21st century, a true golfing gem in Europe. At that point we could already see some signs, such as the construction of “black” tees or extending the length of the course to 6,500, of what might come in the future. Can you announce any of the details about the organisation and logistics? Andalucía, demuestran día a día su compromiso pleno con la conservación del medio ambiente y el uso responsable de los recursos naturales, especialmente el agua. Este planteamiento está presente en todos los trabajos de mantenimiento del campo de golf, que buscan la excelencia del estado del césped a través de prácticas sostenibles y respetuosas con la naturaleza. La reciente restauración del campo, llevada a cabo entre 2015 y 2018, permitió sentar importantes bases para una gestión de mantenimiento mucho más eficiente y sostenible.

awareness through sport We can strengthen our natural states of consciousness and learn from our body simply by remembering and being mindful of its complexity. Leadership begins with leadership over oneself. First, through self-knowledge, through a conscious self-concept that we like and accept, and then through exercising the will to have self-discipline and to maintain healthy thoughts and habits. Sport is one of the most enjoyable ways we have to do this. It allows us to enjoy ourselves, to keep fit and to exercise conscious and mediating leadership! Taking advantage of the Estrella Damm 2023 Andalucía Masters golf tournament in Sotogrande, I would like to highlight the role of sport in exercising conscious leadership over the only vehicle we have to experience life: our body. I believe that to keep the body in tune we have to take into account its complexity and distinguish between its physical part, its subtle part and its causal part. Every inner state has a form on the outside of our reality. If we practice sport with this complexity in mind, we are also improving our inner conscious experience or, in other words, we are strengthening our natural states of consciousness. Let us quickly recall the particularities of each of these planes or bodies: The physical body is the one through which we enjoy the world around us, the one that empirical science explains to us. It is the one that captures all that enters us through the senses and allows us to experience created reality. The subtle body is the one that has traditionally been related to the chakras and is energetically subdivided. It is a dream body that has no fixed form. It does not depend on physical circumstances but on intuitions, feelings, ideas, intentions, desires and emotions. The causal body is difficult to describe because it is supposed to transcend all conceptual categories and is the representation of the creative logos in consciousness. It is called causal because it is the cause that enables the emergence of the subtle and ordinary bodies. The point is that these three bodies of ours exist equally and at the same time. Through the five senses we interact with the physical body. Through meditation, thought, imagination or emotion, we do so with the subtle body. When we sleep deeply, we connect with the causal. Remembering this before or while exercising helps to strengthen our natural states of consciousness and exercise the leadership we desire over our lives.

Aprovechando la celebración del Estrella Damm 2023 Andalucía Masters de golf en Sotogrande, quiero destacar el papel del deporte a la hora de ejercer un liderazgo consciente sobre el único vehículo que tenemos para experimentar la vida: nuestro cuerpo. Creo que para mantener el cuerpo a punto hay que tener en cuenta su complejidad y distinguir entre su parte física, su parte sutil y su parte causal. Cada estado interior, posee una forma en el exterior de nuestra realidad. Si practicamos deporte teniendo presente esta complejidad, estamos también mejorando nuestra experiencia interna consciente o lo que es lo mismo, estamos fortaleciendo nuestros estados naturales de conciencia. Recordemos rápidamente las particularidades de cada uno de estos planos o cuerpos: El cuerpo físico es a través del cual disfrutamos del mundo que nos rodea, el que nos explica la ciencia empírica. Es el que capta todo lo que

nos entra por los sentidos y nos permite experimentar la realidad creada.

La Dolfina Saudi levanta el Abierto de Hurlingham de Polo En un gran final, La Dolfina Saudi venció por 18 a 13 a La Hache P. T., y de esta manera se proclamó ganador del 130° Abierto del Hurlingham Club Bless. ¡Una máquina el equipo de La Dolfina! En los tres primeros chukker marcó una amplia ventaja de la mano del buen juego del oriental David Stirling, muy bien acompañado por Juanma Nero -una muralla en el fondo-, con Adolfito manejando los hilos del equipo y Poroto muy eficaz en la ejecución de faltas, logrando un 9-1 casi letal para las aspiraciones de La Hache, equipo al cual no le salió una jugada en esos primeros 21 minutos de juego neto. No podían convertir ni con bocha parada, estadística en la que terminaron 6/9 en penales y 0/5 en córners. Así las cosas, con LD muy arriba en el marcador, se des-
