Varias de las competiciones más importantes del planeta se han disputado en los campos de golf de la zona y en la actualidad, no son pocos los focos que Sotogrande y su área de influencia atesoran en este privilegiado sector.

En sólo unos meses, este destino va a vivir varios de los acontecimientos golfísticos más importantes internacionalmente. Si hace tan sólo unos días despedíamos la segunda edición del Aramco Team Series en La Reserva Club de Sotogrande, estamos plenamente inmersos en un nuevo torneo del más alto nivel, vinculado al Circuito Europeo, como es el Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters en el mítico y emblemático Real Club Valderrama. ¿Les parece poco?

Hace sólo unos días comenzó la cuenta atrás de un año para la disputa de la Solheim Cup 2023 en la vecina Finca Cortesín, sin duda, uno de los eventos de deporte femenino más trascendentales del planeta. El golf siempre es un recurso y referente.

Además, si fuese poco, aún no les he repasado que varios de los mejores campos y clubes de golf del sur de Europa se concentran a pocos metros de la puerta de casa. El golf siempre será un faro en Sotogrande y una proyección internacional.

a benchmark, always a value on the rise, always an asset to feel proud of and even a rescue in turbulent times. Golf has always been, is and will always be, we are certain of it, one of the great international reference points as an image of the premium destination of the highest sporting level worldwide. Several of the planet´s most important competitions have been played on the area´s golf courses and at present, Sotogrande and its area of influence is getting plenty of attention in this privileged sector.

In just a few months, this destination is going to experience several of the most important international golfing events. Although just a few days ago we bid farewell to the second edition of the Aramco Team Series at La Reserva Club de Sotogrande, we are fully immersed in a new tournament of the highest level, linked to the European Circuit, the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters at the legendary and iconic Real Club Valderrama. Not enough for you?

A few days ago the countdown began for a year until the Solheim Cup 2023 takes place at the neighbouring Finca Cortesín, undoubtedly, one of the world´s most important events in women´s sport. Golf is always a resource and a benchmark.

Also, as if that weren´t enough, I still haven´t told you that several of the best courses and golf clubs in southern Europe are found within a few metres from home. Golf will always be a beacon in Sotogrande and put us in the international limelight.

Valderrama 1997: La Ryder Cup que cambió el mundo

En un mundo convulso, con las entrañas del golf divididas en dos –una guerra fratricida con pocas esperanzas de solución a corto o medio plazo- es inevitable pensar en aquellos tiempos pasados que ahora mismo nos parecen mejores, mucho mejores.

El problema de cumplir años es que cada uno que va pasando es un aniversario: 11 años de la muerte de Seve, 34 años desde que el último español (Seve) ganara un Open Británico, o 25 años de la Ryder Cup de Valderrama: la primera vez en la historia de esta competición nacida en 1927 que el torneo se disputaba fuera del Reino Unido, y el país elegido fue España. Además, el equipo europeo estaba capitaneado por Seve (primer capitán no británico), dos españoles en el equipo. Nacho Garrido y José María Olazábal (en lugar de Miguel Ángel Martín lesionado, aunque apareció en la foto. Fue el primer equipo de la historia con 13 jugadores), y de vicecapitán Miguel Ángel Jiménez: nunca antes una Ryder había sido tan “flamenca”.

In a turbulent world, with the core of golf divided in two -a fratricidal war with little hope of a short or medium term solution- it is inevitable to think of past times that now seem better to us, much better.

The problem of years passing is that each one that passes is an anniversary: 11 years since the death of Seve, 34 years since the last Spaniard (Seve) won a British Open, or 25 years since the Ryder Cup at Valderrama: the first time in the history of this competition created in 1927 that the tournament was held outside the United Kingdom, and the chosen country was Spain. Also, the European team was captained by Seve (first nonBritish captain) with two Spaniards on the team. Nacho Garrido and José María Olazábal (instead of Miguel Ángel Martín who was injured, although he appeared in the photo. It was the first team in history with 13 players), and with Miguel Ángel Jiménzes as vice-captain: no Ryder Cup had ever been so “flamenco” in spirit.

Hasta que uno no lee estas palabras en negro escrito sobre blanco no es consciente del salto de gigante que dio la Ryder Cup en 1997. Y no sé si alguna vez le daremos el valor de aquella hazaña histórica, comparable a la llegada del hombre a la Luna. Sí, ¡y no exagero!

Si comparamos que para poner a un hombre en órbita hizo falta un ordenador que hoy no cabría en el Empire State Building; sacar la Ryder Cup del Reino Unido, traerla a un país Mediterráneo como España (donde el golf era y sigue siendo un deporte elitista, de pijos y ricos) y colocar a un español al mando de un equipo de doce hombres

parecía cosa de locos. Solo el tiempo y la distancia me ha dado una perspectiva real.

Eso, y largas charlas con Seve, con Renton Laidlaw, con JoséMari Olazábal, o con Billy Foster, “el Caddie” de Seve que aquella semana se convirtió en su mejor aliado, en su brazo derecho o en su confesor cuando a las cuatro de la madrugada llamaba a su puerta en los apartamentos de San Roque para exponerle sus ideas, sus emparejamientos, sus estrategias… nadie en el Circuito le imita mejor que él. “Ey Billy. He pensado que si coloco a…. y en el primer partido….”

Until you read these words in black written on white you are not aware of the giant leap that the Ryder Cup took in 1997. And I don´t know if we will every properly value that historic feat, comparable to man reaching the Moon. Yes, and I am not exaggerating!

If we compare it to the fact that in order to put a man in orbit it was necessary to have a computer that today wouldn´t fit in the Empire State Building: taking the Ryder Cup out of the United Kingdom, bringing it to a Mediterranean country like Spain (where golf was and remains an elitist sport, for posh and rich people) and putting a Spaniard

in charge of a twelve-man team seemed like a crazy thing to do. Only time and distance have given me a real perspective.

That, and long chats with Seve, with Renton Laidlaw, with JoséMari Olazábal, or with Billy Foster, “the Caddie” of Seve who became his greatest alley that week, his righthand man and his confidant when at four in the morning he knocked on his door at the apartments in San Roque to outline his ideas, pairings, strategies… nobody on the Circuit imitates him better than him. “Hey Billy. I thought that if I put… and in the first match….”

Aquella semana fue una vorágine de emociones, de fiesta, de alegría, de inundaciones que no llegaron a Valderrama gracias a Patiño y su sistema de drenaje y de la cantidad ingente de toallas para secar los greenes. Teníamos ganas de enseñar nuestra tierra, nuestros campos de golf, nuestra cultura; y como Ortega y Gasset. nos propusimos salvar a Europa “españolizándola”. Y por una semana, ¡lo conseguimos!

Nunca Europa fue tan española y estuvo tan unida. Nunca antes bailamos todos al mismo son, sin importarnos nuestro idioma, nuestro origen o el tamaño de nuestra cuenta bancaria.

That week was a frenzy of emotions, of partying, joy, floods that did not reach Valderrama thanks to Patiño and his drainage system and the huge number of towels to dry the greens. We really wanted to showcase our region, our golf courses, our culture; and like Ortega y Gasset, we set out to save Europe “by making it Spanish". And for a week, we achieved that!

Europe has never been so Spanish and so united. Never before did we all dance to the same song, no matter our language, our origins or the size of our bank account.

Recuerdo como Seve abrazaba aquella pequeña Copa, bajo el porche de la Casa Club, lloviendo a mantas pero todos sonrientes: Garrido, Westwood, Parnevik, Montgomerie, Olazábal… Pocas Ryder me han desbordado tanto como aquella (quizá 1995 con aquel putt de Walton para ganar en Rochester y abrazarme locamente a un colega canadiense sentado junto a mí en zona estadounidense; o en 2012 en Medinah llorar con Olazábal que nos llevó hasta las puertas del mismo cielo desde donde Seve nos sonreía).

25 años no son nada y deberíamos estar celebrándolo por todo lo alto: como los 530 años del Descubrimiento de América; los 30 años de Barcelona 92; los 475 años del nacimientos de Cervantes un 29 de septiembre.

Sólo un cuarto de vida, pero… ¡cómo hemos cambiado!

I remember how Seve hugged that little Cup, under the porch of the Club House, it was raining buckets but everyone was smiling: Garrido, Westwood, Parnevik, Montgomerie, Olazábal… Few Ryder Cups have overwhelmed me as much as that one (perhaps 1995 with that putt by Walton to win in Rochester and crazily hug a Canadian friend sat next to me in the American zone; or in 2012 in Medinah, crying with Olazábal who took us to the gates of heaven where Seve was smiling down on us).

25 years is nothing and we should be celebrating it in great style: like the 530 years since the Discovery of America; 30 years since Barcelona ´92; 475 years since the birth of Cervantes one 29 September.

En vísperas del arranque del Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters en el Real Club Valderrama, La Revista de Sotogrande entrevista al golfista profesional Gonzalo Fernández Castaño

· Muy buenas, en primer lugar agradecerte que estés con nosotros. Es todo un placer disfrutar de esta entrevista a sólo un suspiro del inicio del Estrella Damm en el Real Club Valderrama. Pero antes de centrarnos con el presente, cuéntanos un poco cómo marcha la temporada y qué balance haces hasta el momento.

Pues sí, la verdad es que es un placer estar aquí en Valderrama, es desde hace muchos años una parada obligada del Circuito Europeo. En cuanto a la temporada, yo te diría que no va como esperaba aunque es cierto que me ha sorprendido y he jugado más de lo que me esperaba. Es decir, empecé el año con una categoría del tour bastante mala y he acabado jugando bastante. Ahora parece que empiezo a ver un poco la luz al final del túnel, creo que estoy jugando mejor de lo que los resultados reflejan y que tarde o temprano, más temprano que tarde, empezarán a salir los resultados buenos. Todavía cometo demasiados fallos, o lo que llaman en tenis errores no forzados, pero soy positivo, tengo optimismo.

· Estás cerca de cumplir dos décadas como profesional y son varias las victorias que guardas en la vitrina. ¿Qué retos y desafíos te fijas cada temporada? ¿Cómo es tu motivación día a día?

Cada año te vas marcando objetivos diferentes, pero en estos últimos años cuando salgo a jugar lo hago con la misma ilusión siempre: intentar ganar un torneo. Lo he dicho ya algunas veces, me encantaría que mis hijos me vieran ganar algún torneo, eso sería algo especial. La motivación siempre está, es verdad que tiene altos y bajos, pero al final te levantas por mañana y te vas a entrenar con el optimismo y la ilusión de querer hacerlo bien. En el camino siempre hay baches y tropiezos, pero hay que mirar a largo plazo y no desviarte de tu objetivo.

On the eve of the start of the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters at Real Club Valderrama, Sotogrande Magazine interviewed the professional golfer Gonzalo Fernández Castaño.

Hello, firstly, thanks for being with us. It is a real pleasure to enjoy this interview right before the start of the Estrella Damm at Real Club Valderrama. But, before we focus on the present, tell us a little about how the season is going and your assessment so far.

Well yes, honestly it is a pleasure to be here in Valderrama, for many years it has been a must on the European Circuit. With regard to the season, I would say that it isn´t going as I had hoped althoughitistruethatIhavebeensurprisedandIhaveplayedmore thanexpected.Thatistosay,Istartedtheyearwithquiteabadtour category and I have ended up playing quite a lot. Now it seems that I am beginning to see a little light at the end of the tunnel, I think I am playing better than what the results show and that, sooner or later, sooner let´s hope, the good results will begin to come. I am still making too many mistakes, what they call unforced errors in tennis, but I am positive, I am optimistic.

·

You are close to celebrating two decades as a professional and you have several wins in the trophy cabinet. What challenges do you set for each season? What is your daily motivation?

Each year, you set yourself different objectives, but in recent years I have always gone out to play with the same objective: to try to win a tournament. I have already said so a few times, I would love my children to see me win a tournament, that would be something special. Motivation is always there, it is true that there are ups and down, but in the end you get up in the morning and you go to train withthehopeofwantingtodoitwell.Therearealwaysbadpatches and slip ups, but you have to look to the long term and not lose focus on your objective.

· ¿Cómo llegas a Valderrama este año? En las últimas ediciones has estado siempre muy activo hasta la última jornada.

Con ilusión, sé que le estoy pegando bien a la bola y es un campo que conozco a la perfección aunque hay que ser paciente. En Valderrama tienes que saber esperar, cuando pecas de querer ser agresivo es cuando te pega el revolcón. Por otro lado, aquí tienes la garantía de que los resultados ganadores nunca van a ser extremadamente bajos. Hacer pares no es un mal resultado en Valderrama, mientras que hay otros campos donde sabes que estás haciendo pares y estás estresado porque estás perdiendo posiciones. Eso no se da aquí, con lo cual llego con ilusión y con ganas de hacerlo muy bien.

· Te seguimos desde hace años y para la afición local eres uno más de casa. ¿Cómo empieza tu relación tan especial con Sotogrande, Real Club Valderrama y el golf?

Es una relación ya de muchos años. Cierto es que tradicionalmente siempre he veraneado en Marbella, a excepción de unos años que vinimos aquí a Sotogrande, pero bueno, recuerdo que la primera vez que jugué en esta zona fue en un campeonato de Andalucía alevín o infantil, a principios de los 90 y desde entonces estoy enamorado de la zona, de su gente y de su golf. Ya soy un asiduo, aunque siga veraneando en Guadalmina, a diario vengo a Valderrama, a Sotogrande a practicar, porque es un sitio único y especial. A veces, es verdad que el viento de levante o poniente te puede sacar un poco de tus casillas, pero es un auténtico paraíso. Porque sabemos que estamos en Cádiz pero si nos dijeran que estamos en California o en Florida también te lo podrías creer.

· Estamos viviendo un año muy especial para la urbanización con la celebración del 25 aniversario de la Ryder Cup. ¿Cómo la recuerdas y qué crees que supuso para el golf español albergar un torneo de esa magnitud?

La recuerdo como todos, con muchísima agua. El recuerdo que tenemos de la Ryder es cómo llovía y, a la vez, qué profesionalidad del equipo de Valderrama y todos los voluntarios. Como pasa siempre en España, cada vez que celebramos un evento de índole internacional sale bien porque nos volcamos. Jaime Ortiz Patiño junto con Seve y Emma Villacieros hicieron la gran labor de traerse el que yo creo que es el tercer evento mundial en telespectadores, tras las Olimpiadas y el Mundial de fútbol y ojalá venga otra más. España se merece otra Ryder Cup por todo lo que ha hecho, por todos los jugadores que ha aportado y todo lo que supuso Seve para la Ryder. Yo creo que España se merece una segunda Ryder y ojalá sea pronto, en 2031.

· Nos comentaba hace unos meses Javier Reviriego, GM de Valderrama, que el mejor homenaje que se puede hacer es mantener el legado de la excelencia en el club. ¿Cómo se aprecia y valora en el mundo del golf al Real Club Valderrama y al destino de Sotogrande?

Valderrama es un club muy especial. Siempre lo digo, muchos golfistas cuando ganan su primer torneo lo primero que hacen es comprarse un cochazo. En mi caso, yo pasé a formar parte del Club Valderrama, era un sueño que tenía, ser socio de Valderrama y lo pude cumplir. Como dice Javier, lo mejor que podemos hacer los socios es mantener ese legado, así que para mí es un auténtico honor. Llevo el escudo de Valderrama con mucho orgullo por todo el mundo.

· How are you heading into Valderrama this year? In the last few editions you have always been very active up until the final day.

With hope, I know that I am hitting the ball well and it is course thatIknowperfectlyalthoughpatienceisnecessary.AtValderrama you have to be able to wait, when you make the mistake of being aggressive, that is when you slip up. On the other hand, here you have the guarantee that the winning scores are never going to be extremely low. Making par isn´t a bad result at Valderrama, while there are other courses where you know that you are making pars andgettingstressedbecauseyouarelosingpositions.Thatdoesn´t happenhere,soIarrivewiththehopeanddesiretodoreallywell.

· We have been following you for years and for local fans you are like another home player. How did your really special relationship with Sotogrande, Real Club Valderrama and golf begin?

It is a relationship that goes back many years. It is true that traditionally I have spent summers in Marbella, except for a few years when we came here to Sotogrande, well, I remember the first time I played in the area was at an Andalusian under-12´s or under-14´s championship, at the start of the 90´s and since then I have been in love with the area, its people and its golf. I am a regular,evenifIcontinuetospendsummerinGuadalmina,Icome toValderramaonadailybasis,toSotograndetopractice,becauseit is a unique and special place. Sometimes, it is true that the eastern or western win can push you to your limit a little, but it is a real paradise. We know that we are in Cadiz but if someone told us we areinCaliforniaorFloridayoucouldbelieveit.

· We are enjoying a very special year for the resort with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Ryder Cup. How do you remember it and what do you think it meant for Spanish golf to host a tournament of that magnitude?

I remember it like everyone, with lots of water. The memory of the Ryder Cup is that it was raining and, in turn, what professionalism from the Valderrama team and all the volunteers. As is always the case in Spain, each time we hold an international event it goes well because we really get behind it. Jaime Ortiz Patiño along with Seve and Emma Villacieros did the great job of bringing what I believe is the event that ranks third globally in terms of TV views, behind the Olympics and World Cup and I hope we get another. Spain deserves another Ryder Cup for everything that has been done, for alltheplayersithascontributed,andeverythingthatSevemeantfor the Ryder Cup. I believe that Spain deserves a second Ryder Cup and I hope it is soon, in 2031.

· A few months ago Javier Reviriego, GM of Valderrama, told us that the best tribute that can be offered is to maintain the legacy of excellence at the club. How does the golfing world appreciate and value Real Club Valderrama and the Sotogrande destination?

Valderrama is a very special club. I always say it, when many players win their first tournament, the first thing they do is to buy themselvesagreatcar.Inmycase,IbecameamemberofRealClub Valderrama, it was a dream I had, to be a member of Valderrama andIwasabletofulfilit.AsJaviersays,thebestthingmemberscan doistomaintainthatlegacy,soformeitisarealhonour.Ibearthe emblem of Valderrama with lots of pride all over the world.

· Siempre ha sido uno de esos deportistas de élite que no se muerden la lengua y dice lo que piensa. ¿Crees que es importante que referentes del mundo del deporte y de la sociedad expresen sus opiniones sobre lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor? ¿Falta más implicación?

Yo creo que lo importante es que nos podamos expresar todos en libertad y que cuando lo hagamos no se nos critique por ello. Algunos dicen que no hay que mezclar deporte y política pero creo que deportistas nos podemos expresar igual que lo hace un albañil o un médico. Quien no quiera sacar los pies del tiesto que no diga nada, pero a los que nos gusta hacerlo y expresar nuestras ideas que no se nos critique única y exclusivamente porque nuestras ideas sean del lado que no gusta.

· Has sido y eres uno de los golfistas más activos en RR. SS. ¿Su uso nos aporta más aspectos negativos o positivos?

Creo que lo importante de las redes sociales es hacer un buen uso de ellas. Hoy día son algo fundamental, sobre todo en cuanto a imagen. Hay jugadores que lo hacen especialmente bien, el ejemplo más claro probablemente sea Ian Poulter. A mí las redes me divierten, pero me doy cuenta de que también te quitan cantidades de tiempo que podríamos estar dedicando a cosas más útiles. Es un instrumento que te puede ayudar mucho si se usa con responsabilidad.

· You have always been one of those elite sportspeople who don´t bite their tongues and say what they think. Do you think it is important for benchmarks from the world of sport and society to express their opinions about what is happening around us? Is more involvement needed?

I think that the important thing is that we can all express ourselves freely and that when we do so we are not criticised for it. Some people say you shouldn´t mix sport and politics but I think that sportspeople can express themselves just as a mason or a doctor does. Whoever doesn´t want to be bold doesn´t have to say anything, but those of us who like doing it and expressing our ideas,whichshouldnotbecriticisedsolelyandexclusivelybecause our ideas are on the unpopular side.

· You have been one of the most active golfers on social networks? Does their use contribute more positive or negative aspects?

I think the important thing about social networks is to use them correctly. At present they are essential, especially in terms of image.Thereareplayerswhodoitespeciallywell,themostobvious example is probably Ian Poulter. I have fun on networks, but I realise that they take away time from you that we could spend on more useful things. It is an instrument that can really help you if usedresponsibly.

· Hemos comprobado en multitud de ocasiones el pilar fundamental que supone tu familia. ¿Cómo conviven con una profesión tan exigente?

La familia es fundamental, es el núcleo en torno al que gira todo, lo que me motiva a seguir adelante. Muchas veces se hace duro estar semanas fuera de casa, estar lejos, sobre todo cuando estás jugando mal. Cuando juegas bien sientes que al menos el sacrificio que estás haciendo tú y tu familia tiene recompensa, el problema viene cuando juegas mal y tienes cargo de conciencia. No haces ni una cosa ni otra bien. Es una sensación a veces agridulce, pero la verdad es que tengo una familia súper comprensiva, que me apoya a todos los niveles. Cuando empecé en el golf, recuerdo todos los sacrificios que hicieron mis padres y, una vez casado con Alicia, todos los sacrificios que ha hecho por mí tanto ella como los niños, cuando fuimos a EEUU, cuando decidimos volver… Siempre es un apoyo constante, parte del éxito de mi carrera profesional se debe a mi familia, no cabe duda.

· Antes de acabar. ¿Dónde y con quién jugarías una ronda sin la presión de un gran campeonato?

Sin duda con amigos, es algo que valoro mucho. Si algo me ha dado el golf es conocer a un montón de gente interesante y hacer buenos amigos por todo el mundo. A mí me gusta mucho la competición, de hecho cuando me retire me encantaría seguir involucrado de alguna forma, ya sea a modo de entrenador o volviéndome amateur. Pero si tengo que elegir con quien jugar sería con familia y amigos.

· We have often seen that your family is a cornerstone for you. How do they live alongside such a demanding profession?

Family is essential, it is the core that everything revolves around, what motivates me to keep going. Often it is difficult to be way from home for weeks, to be far away, especially when you are playingbadly.Whenyouplaywellyoufeelthatatleastthesacrifice you and your family is making has a reward, the problem comes when you play badly and you have a guilty conscience. You don´t do either thing well. It is sometimes a bittersweet feeling, but the truth is that my family is really understanding, they support me at all levels. When I started golf, I remember all the sacrifices my parents made and, once married to Alicia, all the sacrifices that both she and the children have made for me, when we went to the United States, when we decided to come back... She is always a constant support, part of the success of my professional career is owedtomyfamily,undoubtedly.

· Before ending. Where and with whom would you play a round without the pressure of a major championship?

Undoubtedly with friends, it is something I really value. If golf has given me something it is getting to meet lots of interesting people and making good friends around the world. I really like competition, if fact, when I retire I would like to stay involved in someway,whetherasacoachorbyturningamateur.ButifIhadto choosewhotoplaywithitwouldbewithfamilyandfriends.

MÉXICO

Golf y playas, playas y golf son un binomio perfecto. Desde 2004 se dieron cuenta en el Caribe Mexicano y no han dejado de potenciarlo desde entonces. Con una veintena de campos entre las costas de Cancún y Riviera Maya, México ofrece instalaciones de primer nivel, una de ellas es el Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club, en Playa del Carmen.

Rodeado de naturaleza, fauna exótica y antiguas ruinas mayas, Playa Paraíso cuenta además con un destacado campo de golf diseñado por el legendario Pete Dye y que ha sido sede de eventos tan prestigiosos como el World Amateur Team Championships o el PGA Tour Latinoamérica. Golf and beaches, beaches and golf, a perfect pairing. Since 2004, they have realised that in the Mexican Caribbean and they have continued to strengthen it since then. With twenty courses among the coasts of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Mexico o ers top level facilities, one of them is the Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club, in Playa del Carmen.

Surrounded by nature, exotic wildlife and old Mayan ruins, Playa Paraíso also has an outstanding golf course designed by the legendary Pete Dye which has hosted very prestigious events such as the World Amateur Team Championships and the Latin American PGA Tour. It is a course that is often chosen by demanding golfers, and its multiple tee options allow players of all levels to enjoy the challenge.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

On two occasions, 2009 and 2013, the Dominican Republic was named the “best golf destination” in the Caribbean and Latin America region. It has thirty courses designed by legends of the sport and located in the best tourist zones, with 57 of its holes bordering on or o ering views of the sea.

Some of them have great international prestige, as in the case of Punta Espada Golf. It was the first golf course in all of Punta Cana and has been named by many as one of the best in the Caribbean and even in the world, for its particularity of having eight of its holes positioned facing the sea. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus; in fact, it was the first of the three he designed for the Punta Cana region.

We cannot leave the country without mentioning another emblem of Dominican golf like the course “Teeth of the Dog” in La Romana. Selected among the 100 best courses in the world according to the magazine Golf Digest, since its creation it has attracted great players thanks to its di culty and interesting playing challenges. This course by the sea was also a masterpiece by Pete Dye and around it are the stunning luxury private villas of Casa de Campo.

REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA

En dos ocasiones, 2009 y 2013, la República Dominicana ha sido designada como "mejor destino de golf" en el área del Caribe y América Latina. sobre una antigua plantación de azúcar, tuvo su apogeo en los años 80. Tras unas décadas de baja asistencia, el campo volvió a reactivarse en 2010 y hoy es muy apreciado por su complejidad y por su belleza.

Si hay una joya de golf oculta en las tranquilas aguas del mar Caribe está en la isla de Santa Lucía, una pequeña nación ubicada al norte de Trinidad y Tobago y al sur de Martinica. En el

MARTINIQUE

Martinique is a rugged island in the Caribbean belonging to the Lesser Antilles, a French overseas territory whose culture reflects the mixture of influences between French and Creole.

To the south of the island, the municipality of Trois Ilets is home to the only golf course in Martinique. Covering 5,812 square metres and 18 holes, it was also designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones in 1976. This course, built

on an old sugar plantation, had its heyday in the 80´s. After decades of low attendance levels, the course was relaunched in 2010 and it is now highly esteemed for its di culty and beauty.

La integración con el entorno y el protagonismo de la luz dan alas a un proceso creativa que acaba por convertirse en un sueño, en un hogar, convertido en realidad. La Revista de Sotogrande se sienta con uno de los grandes iconos de la arquitectura internacional con Sotogrande y la influencia del golf como una de las grandes particularidades de su reconocida arquitectura como resort.

Integration into the environment and the key role of light give rise to a creative process that ends up becoming a dream, a home, turned into a reality. Sotogrande Magazine sat down with one of the great icons of international architecture with Sotogrande and the influence of golf as one of the great particularities of his renowned architecture as a resort.

• En primer lugar, es todo un placer volver a disfrutar de un rato de conversación. Siempre enriquece y por supuesto, uno sale con mucho más aprendido a cómo llegó. Me gustaría comenzar preguntando sobre cómo ha vivido estos últimos tiempos, tan convulsos, y cómo ha cambiado y evolucionado el cliente, arquitectónicamente hablando, desde la pandemia.

Quizás lo he vivido como la mayoría de la gente, con ciertos momentos de incertidumbre aunque con optimismo y responsabilidad también. Hemos presenciado un fuerte giro a todo lo que nos rodea, un reorientación de nuestros valores y prioridades donde hemos sufrido pérdidas de seres queridos. Una etapa que en la historia reciente no habíamos vivido. Por otro lado, también ha evolucionado y derivado en bastantes cambios a nivel laboral. Hay dos puntos que destacaría: la aceleración en la digitalización de nuestra vida y el replanteamiento de las prioridades. Ambos aspectos han influido en qué tipo de arquitectura quieren las personas de hoy, cómo viven los espacios, cómo es su estilo de vida y cuáles son los aspectos más importantes para ellos

• ¿Son diferentes las necesidades?

Las necesidades de las personas que finalmente eligen Sotogrande para vivir se ven influenciadas claramente por el panorama político y social del momento. Desean vivienda más tecnológicas, sostenibles, que respeten el entorno y con opciones para compartir con la familia y amigos. La revolución del teletrabajo también ha jugado un papel fundamental en esta transición de nuevos aspectos prioritarios. Los espacios son más dinámicos y multifuncionales. Buscando una arquitectura con mucho diseño y que en paralelo consolide un valor de inversión seguro para el futuro.

• ¿Han cambiado los destinos?

El crecimiento poblacional y la inversión en Sotogrande han crecido de manera exponencial…

Conocemos que la población está creciendo en los últimos 20-25 años en el resort, pero en estos últimos 3 años, de una manera muy especial, Sotogrande “se ha puesto en el mapa”, por decirlo de una manera coloquial. En el estudio de ARK ya hemos normalizado enviar información sobre Sotogrande a clientes semanalmente. En el panorama mundial hay pocos lugares como

Sotogrande, por ello es fundamental cuidar el estilo de vida, sus valores y qué tipo de acciones promocionales se realizan en todos los sentidos.

• La exclusividad y la originalidad son los conceptos más valorados en el sector lujo y alto nivel. ¿Cómo cuidan todos esos detalles? ¿Cómo encuentran y buscan el material perfecto e idóneo para cada proyecto y cada espacio?

Somos apasionados de la arquitectura y de nuestros proyectos. Por ello, la actitud es de mejora continua, la búsqueda de la excelencia; realmente nunca estamos contentos y queremos mejorarnos en cada proyecto que realizamos. Esta actitud es muy inspiradora y compartida de todo el equipo de ARK. Especialmente soy un inconformista y trato de contagiar ese espíritu de superación; es algo de lo que nos sentimos muy orgullosos todo el equipo. Esto también a estar en continua evolución, a realizar muchos viajes, buscar nuevas soluciones, materiales y caminos para afrontar retos. Para encontrar este camino hay que salir de la zona de confort. Es la actitud que tiene mi equipo y por ello estamos constantemente visitando ferias, museos, canteras, fábricas, etc.

• Firstly, it is a real pleasure to once again enjoy time talking to you. It is always enriching and of course, one leaves a lot wiser than when one arrived. I would like to begin by asking you about how you have experiencedrecenttimes,whichhave been so turbulent, and how clients havechangedandevolved,intermsof architecture,sincethepandemic.

Perhaps I have experienced it like most people, with certain times of uncertainty although also with optimism and responsibility. We have witnessed a major shift in everything around us, a repositioning in our values and priorities where we have suffered the loss of loved ones. A period that we had not experienced in recent history. On the other hand, it has also evolved and resulted in quite a few changes in terms of work. There are two points that I would highlight: the acceleration in the digitalisation of our life and the rethinking of priorities. Both aspects have influenced the type of architecture that the people of today want, how they experience spaces, what their lifestyle is like and what the most important aspects are for them.

• Are needs different?

The needs of the people who ultimately choose to live in Sotogrande are clearly influenced by the political and social scene of the time. They want more technological, sustainable properties, that respect the environment and with options for sharing with family and friends. The revolution of teleworking has also played a crucial role in this transition of new priority aspects. Spaces are more dynamic and multifunctional. People seek architecture with a lot of design and that alongside that is a safe investment asset for the future.

• Have destinations changed? The population growth and investment in Sotogrande have grown exponentially...

We know that the population has grown over the last 20-25 years in the resort, but in the last 3 years, especially, Sotogrande “has put itself on the map” so to say, to use a popular phrase. At the ARK studio it has become normal for us to send information about Sotogrande to clients each week. On the global scene, there are few places like Sotogrande, therefore it is essential to look after the lifestyle, its values and what kinds of promotional actions are carried out in every regard.

• Exclusivity and originality are the most valued concepts in the luxury andhigh-endsector.Howdoyoulook after all those details? How do you findandlookfortheperfectandideal material for every project and every space?

We are passionate about architecture and our projects. Therefore, the attitude is one of ongoing improvement, the pursuit of excellence; we are never really happy and we want to improve in every project we carry out. This attitude is very inspiring and shared by the entire team at ARK. I especially am a non-conformist and I try to spread that spirit of wanting to improve; it is something that the entire team feels very proud of. This also means constantly evolving, going on lots of trips, looking for new solutions, materials and pathways to tackle challenges. In order to find that path it is necessary to get out of your comfort zone. That is the attitude my team has and therefore we are constantly visiting fairs, museums, quarries, factories, etc.

•¿Un proyecto residencial debe adaptarse a su entorno o al contrario?

Un proyecto, ubicado en estos enclaves de los que hablamos, debe de parecer que siempre ha estado allí. Debe de entender el lenguaje del entorno, la cultura, la naturaleza y crear una simbiosis con el lugar. Lo que siempre busco es la sensación de “Living in Nature”.

• Entiendo, eso llevará un profundo estudio del contexto, la luz, el espacio, el medio natural…

Haciendo una analogía con la alta gastronomía, tenemos a nuestro alcance multitud de ingredientes que debemos conjugar para conseguir la receta perfecta, el plato magistral. Paso largos periodos de

tiempo dedicados al estudio al detalle de nuestros proyectos antes de comenzarlos, para entender perfectamente el lugar, su entorno y su contexto ideal.

• ¿El diseño interior y exterior deben estar plenamente conectados?

No se puede desdibujar, deben de estar plenamente conectados porque nuestro estilo de vida actual es así. Tenemos un modelo de relación con las viviendas donde los espacios son multifuncionales y en los que sobre todo, las zonas de días, se unen para transitar indistintamente entre ellos. Una de las esencias de nuestros proyectos es que la piel exterior del edificio entra en muchas ocasiones en las zonas interiores generando una conexión con los patios.

•Iunderstandthatentailsathorough study of the context, light, space, natural environment...

Creating a comparison with haute gastronomy, at our fingertips we have a multitude of ingredients that we have

to blend to achieve the perfect recipe, the masterly dish. I spend long periods of time devoted to the in-depth study of our projects before starting them, in order to perfectly understand the place, its environment and its ideal context.

• Should the interior and exterior designbefullyconnected?

You cannot blur, they need to be fully connect because our current lifestyle is like that. We have a relationship model with properties where spaces are multi-purpose and where, above all, the day areas are connected in order to move interchangeably between them. One of the essences of our projects is that the outer skin of the building

often comes into the inner areas creating a connection with the patios.

• We are in October and this is the most international month par excellence for golf in Sotogrande. Does a golf context have a major influence when it comes to a “premium”residentialproject?

Golf creates a unique setting, it frames designed natural spaces and of course they have to be taken into account. When golf is present it is another ingredient in the end recipe. As an architect the golf space is a great inspiration that creates calm and makes it possible to frame images that look like real photographs.

• Estamos en octubre y por excelencia, es el mes más internacional para el golf en Sotogrande. ¿Influye de manera superlativa un contexto de golf a la hora de un proyecto residencial ‘premium’?

El Golf nos genera un escenario único, enmarca espacios naturales diseñados y por supuesto se han de tener en cuenta. Cuando el golf está presente es otro ingrediente más en la receta final. Como arquitecto el espacio de golf es una gran inspiración que me genera calma y permite enmarcar imágenes que parecen auténticas fotografías.

•Buena parte de las principales proyectos de gran calado, tanto en Sotogrande como en otros resorts

de gran lujo, giran alrededor de un campo de golf. ¿Cómo debe ser esa simbiosis con el medio?

Es interesante no perder de vista que hablamos de espacios vivos y orgánicos, que están en continua evolución y además son utilizados por personas. De esta manera, teniendo en cuenta todos estos aspectos; debemos encontrar el proyecto perfecto que permita integrar la vivienda, las especies arbóreas de nuestro jardín y jugar con los espacios que se van a enmarcar.

• Antes de acabar, le hago dos preguntas muy rápidas y relacionadas precisamente con su vida en Sotogrande y el golf. ¿Le gustaría

participar en algún proyecto vinculado al golf en la zona?

Siendo un amante del Golf y de Sotogrande sería un gran sueño y una estupenda oportunidad. Un proyecto vinculado al golf que nazca de un análisis de toda la experiencia desde que se tiene contacto con el campo de golf. Sería una aventura muy interesante a realizar desde el punto de vista creativo.

• ¿Qué campo le hubiera gustado firmar si fuera diseñador?

Lo tengo claro: Real Club Valderrama.

• A large part of the major projects, in both Sotogrande and other grand luxe resorts, revolve around a golf course.Howshouldthatsymbiosisbe with the environment?

Society is a perfect meeting space to enjoy a spectacular breakfast with the best views while watching the sunrise, to have a snack before playing golf (with its Grab ang Go service), have a business lunch or have dinner enjoying music in live over the weekend. They also have a private room with a wine cellar for private events.

ASYMMETRY is not a conventional architectural studio. Its founders, Alfonso HerreraandMarHerrera,whosefamilyhave been working in the field of architecture in theCampodeGibraltarfortwogenerations, have created a studio in Sotogrande which carries out projects in numerous parts of the world.

Con una importante respeto por el medioambiente y conscientes de lo importante que es la salubridad de las personas, desarrollan proyectos en ciudades como Abidjan, Santiago de Chile, Dakar o Jerusalén…y todo ello desde este rincón del mundo donde el estilo de vida es diferente, Sotogrande.

“La complejidad de los proyectos yace en las diferentes escalas a las que trabajamos, la capacidad de adaptarnos al contexto” comenta Mar Herrera, Directora cofundadora de la empresa y que ha vivido en numerosos lugares del mundo antes de volver a su tierra natal para desarrollar este proyecto.

En su etapa como Arquitecto en Francia ha trabajado en proyectos emblemáticos en Paris, como el desarrollo urbano junto a la Gare de Lyon con Richard Rogers, ha desarrollado proyectos para la Banca Asiática de Desarrollo en Armenia o trabajado en el paisaje y desarrollo urbano de acantilados en Villerville, en Francia. Todos estos proyectos siempre tienen una perspectiva diferente, “asimétrica”, en la que palabras como eficiencia, salud o naturaleza forman parte del germen de sus proyectos.

With great respect for the environment and aware of the importance of people’s health, they are involved in projects in cities such as Abidjan, Santiago de Chile, Dakar and Jerusalem, all from this corner of the world where the lifestyle is di erent, Sotogrande.

“The complexity of the projects lies with the di erent scales we work on, the ability to adapt to the context,” says Mar Herrera, director and co-founder of the company, who has lived in various places around the world before returning to the country of her birth to undertake this project.

During her time as an architect in France, she worked on emblematic projects in Paris such as the urban development beside the Gare de Lyon with Richard Rogers, she has carried out projects for the Asian Development Bank in Armenia and worked on the landscape and urban development of cli s in Villerville, in France. All these projects have always had a di erent, “asymmetrical”, perspective in which words such as e ciency, health and nature form part of the core of her work.

El uso de materiales locales o el bajo consumo de los edificios que proyectan es una de las premisas del estudio, destacando la importancia de entender el contexto de cambio y la crisis climática y energética que vivimos. “Existen numerosas herramientas en la actualidad para medir el impacto de lo que construimos pero también para entender la vida útil de los materiales que usamos, y cómo hacer edificios más eficientes, de menor consumo y mayor confort” .

Asymmetry se ha fundado para dar respuestas únicas a las diferentes necesidades de los habitantes de la urbanización desde la experiencia, la innovación y la capacidad de adaptación, y todo ello, lo realiza desde el Puerto Sotogrande y en colaboración con estudios e ingenierías de reconocimiento internacional.

In Sotogrande, from where they manage the other companies in the Symmetry group, they are designing and developing villas in Sotogrande Costa and La Reserva, refurbishing El Encinar hotel and working on the new Eco-resort which is planned beside the existing hotel, in this case in conjunction with H25.

“Our added value lies in the team’s creative ability; it is capable of finding a solution to problems of any scale and level, from a project measured in hectares, a public square, a villa or the design of iconic bus stops like the ones we did in Dakar,” says Mar Herrera, who explains how important it is that they carry out an analytical study of each site before coming up with the ideas and innovative component of their projects.

The use of local materials and the low energy consumption of the buildings they are designing is one of the premises of this study, reflecting the importance of understanding the context of change and the climate and energy crisis we are experiencing.

“These days there are numerous tools available to measure the impact of what we are building, and also to understand the useful life of the materials we use, and how to make buildings more e cient, with lower consumption and greater comfort,” she says.

En el caso de Hepburn, la casa Christie’s de Londres puso en venta en 2017 varios lotes con fotografías, joyas, trajes y otros objetos curiosos, como el guion de Desayuno con diamantes o el mechero que utilizó en el rodaje de My fair lady. De sus compañeros de rodaje, los coleccionistas han pujado por reliquias como el Mercedes Gullwing de 1995, propiedad de Clark Gable y que fue vendido por dos millones de dólares, o el Rolex de Paul Newman. Un Cosmograph Daytona que le regaló su mujer Joanne Woodward. El morbo o el mito están también detrás de las subastas que llevan el nombre de Lady Di. Este mismo año, unos días antes del 25º aniversario de su muerte, se puso en venta el antiguo Ford Escort que supuestamente condujo la princesa Diana y que fue adquirido por 866.000 dólares.

Recetas tradicionales, sabrosas y contundentes, donde el verdadero secreto está en su cocinado lento y en la excelencia de sus materias primas -carnes, legumbres, patatas, hortalizas-.

Los platos de cuchara, con todas sus deliciosas variadades regionales, constituyen una de las joyas más preciadas de nuestro patrimonio gastronómico. Por eso es importante saber combinarlos adecuadamente con vinos capaces de realzar su aroma y su sabor.

Seguramente la primera intuición nos lleve a pensar en vinos tintos y, en efecto, tendremos parte de razón, pero para elegir el tinto correcto hay que fijarse en los ingredientes, en el nivel graso del plato, en su contundencia o en las especias que lo acompañan.

La primera recomendación de los expertos es, por ejemplo, maridar aquellos platos más recios y contundentes, guisos a base de carne, muy potentes de sabor con vinos de cuerpo medio, no demasiado fuertes para no saturar al paladar.

Los tintos de corpulencia media y alto grado de acidez son ideales por ejemplo para los cocidos, los callos, la fabada, los guisos de caza. Su estructura equilibrada contrasta con la potencia de estos platos, les aporta ligereza y limpia el paladar.

Un buen vino para este tipo de maridajes es Barón de Chirel De la variedad tempranillo, se trata de un clásico moderno que realza la identidad, tradición y modernidad de Rioja. Su intensidad aromática recuerda a frutos negros y maduros como los arándanos o las grosellas y la entrada en boca, aunque poderosa, cuenta con una textura equilibrada y sedosa, con un punto de formidable acidez. Se recomienda beberlo con guisos de caza, como perdiz, conejo, venado, jabalí o corzo, incluso condimentados con salsas especiadas.

Otra de las recomendaciones es el tinto Finca Torrea. Un caldo elegante, fresco, elaborado con uvas de las variedades tempranillo y graciano, procedentes del viñedo viejo cultivado en la Finca de Torrea. Se trata de un vino de corte vanguardista, con una crianza más corta y un perfil más actual, con mayor carácter afrutado y menos balsámico. Armoniza muy bien con guisos de carne o de setas.

Undoubtedly, our first intuition leads us to think of red wines and, indeed, we will be partly right, however to choose the right red wine, it is necessary to pay attention to the ingredients, the fat level of the dish, its heartiness and the spices that accompany it.

The first recommendation of the experts is, for example, to pair with the stronger and more hearty dishes, stews made from meat, with a powerful flavour, with medium-bodied wines, which aren´t too strong in order not to saturate the palate.

Medium-bodied wines with a high level of acidity are ideal, for example, with stews, tripe, fabada (bean stew) and game stews. Their balanced structure contrasts with the power of these dishes, provides lightness and cleans the palate.

A good wine for these kinds of pairings is Barón de Chirel. From the tempranillo variety, it is a modern classic that enhances the identity, tradition and modernity of La Rioja. Its aromatic intensity is reminiscent of dark and ripe fruits such as blueberries and blackcurrants and the palate, although powerful, has a balanced and silky texture, with a touch of brilliant acidity. It is recommended to drink it with game stews, such as partridge, rabbit, venison, boar or roe deer, even seasoned with spiced sauces.

Este vino es el resultado de una cuidada selección de uvas procedentes de viñas propias de más de 80 años. Se trata de un caldo de trago lento y largo, ideal para combinar con legumbres cocidas o guisadas. Un ejemplo sería el tradicional cocido madrileño, con sus garbanzos

acompañados de sabrosa carne, tocino y verduras.

Quizá algunos lectores se pregunten qué pasa entonces con los tintos más potentes, con los reserva y gran reserva, ¿se pueden combinar de algún modo con los platos de cuchara? La respuesta es sí, pero de nuevo hay que saber escoger bien qué plato puede equilibrarse mejor con estos vinos tan complejos y llenos de matices, para que no acaben compitiendo unos sabores con otros.

Este vino, elaborado con la mínima intervención posible, aporta notas de hierba y cítricos, piña o melón. En boca deja una sensación fresca y aromática de final perfecto para limpiar las papilas gustativas y facilitar la digestión.

También con notas frutales y buen final está el vino Finca Montico Verdejo sobre lías, elaborado al 100% con la variedad verdejo. Fresco en boca y con buena acidez. Ideal también para cremas, guisos de verdura o sopas de pescado. Sea cual sea la receta, está más que demostrado, nada le queda mejor a un plato de cuchara que un buena copa de vino, solo hay que saber elegir la mejor combinación.

Comer en las alturas

Nuestro viaje por los restaurantes más insólitos del planeta comienza por las alturas. Si existe un lugar famoso por sus impresionantes vistas ese es At.Mosphere, el restaurante situado en la planta 122 del monumental edificio Burj Khalifa, en Dubai.

At.Mosphere se ubica a 441 metros de altitud, razón por la que fue catalogado en el libro Guinness como el restaurante más alto del mundo. Recientemente este coloso se ha visto superado por un restaurante más alto aún. Se llama Heavenly Jin, está dentro del Hotel Shanghai Tower, en Shanghái, a 556 metros de altura.

Otro restaurante no apto para cardíacos se llama Dinner in the Sky. Su propuesta es la siguiente: comer suspendido en una mesa gigante para 22 comensales a 50 metros de altura colgado de una grúa. ¿Les parece complicado? Pues la idea ya se ha extendido por distintos países como México, Estados Unidos, Canadá o Viena; si bien el original nació en Bruselas.

Una experiencia excitante, como la que ofrece nuestro siguiente restaurante: el Bellini. Situado en la planta 45 del World Trade Center de Ciudad de México, este restaurante no solo es alto, sino que además gira. Bellini también entró en la lista Guinness por ser el restaurante giratorio más grande del mundo. Sus cristaleras permiten disfrutar de una vista 360° durante 1 hora con 45 minutos, el tiempo que tarda en dar una vuelta completa.

Comer en las profundidades

Si comer en el aire puede resultar emocionante, comer bajo las profundidades no se queda atrás. Podemos encontrar, por ejemplo, restaurantes dentro de asombrosas cuevas. Uno de ellos es el Grotta Palazzese, situado en una cueva abierta dentro de un acantilado rocoso cerca de Bari, en Italia. También en España, está la bella Cueva los Majuelos en la comarca de Sierra Mágina, Jaén, donde es posible cenar dentro de una cueva natural, bajo un cielo de estalactitas.

Por otro lado, también existen restaurantes bajo el agua. Uno de los más famosos es el Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, situado dentro del hotel Conrad, en Maldivas. Este restaurante se haya sumergido a cinco metros bajo el Océano Indico y está considerado uno de los más bellos del mundo por su cúpula de 180 grados que permite una visión completa de las especies marinas y los jardines de coral.

Más cerca, en Noruega, abrió en 2019 Under, el primer restaurante submarino de Europa. Por fuera parece un enorme rompeolas, por dentro un refugio privilegiado en pleno mar del Norte.

This restaurant has been submerged five metres under the Indian Ocean and it is considered one of the most beautiful in the world for its 180º dome that allows a complete vision of the marine species and coral gardens.

Closer, in Norway, Europe´s first underwater restaurant, Under, opened in Norway in 2019. Outside it looks like an enormous breakwater, inside it is a privileged haven in the midst of the North Sea.

En la categoría de restaurantes ubicados en lugares o edificios singulares, empezamos por una estación de tren, en concreto por la antigua Union Station de Denver. Allí, reutilizando el cuero, los muebles y las lámparas del viejo edificio se creó el elegantísimo restaurante The Cooper Lounge.

Otros lugares con sabor a historia podemos encontrarlos en el interior de castillos o de viejos monasterios. Un ejemplo es el Castel Monastero de la Toscana, donde se encuentran los restaurantes Contrada y La Cantina; o el premiado restaurante Refectorio, de Valladolid, situado en una antigua abadía del siglo XII.

Más ubicaciones insólitas: el interior de un viejo hospital militar como el bellísimo restaurante The Jane, en Bélgica; el de una caja de seguridad de un banco como el restaurante Trinity Place, en Nueva York; o incluso dentro de un bunker nuclear como el Bunkr Parukarka, en Praga.

No obstante, para restaurante original aquel que ni siquiera sabes cómo es, porque todo está a oscuras. Es el caso de Dans Le Noir. La franquicia nació en Paris, aunque hoy tiene sedes en distintas partes del mundo. La única condición para comer aquí es abandonar la vista y dejarse llevar por el resto de sentidos. Una experiencia creativa cuanto menos y con una curiosidad añadida: su plantilla está compuesta por personas verdaderamente ciegas.

Eating in an extraordinary place

In the category of restaurants located in unique places or buildings, we begin with a train station, specifically, the old Union Station in Denver. There, reusing leather, furniture and lights from the old building, the truly elegant restaurant

Other places with an historical flavour can be found inside castles or old monasteries. One example is Castel Monastero de la Toscana, home to the restaurants Contrada and La Cantina; and the award winning restaurant Refectorio, in Valladolid, located in an old 12th century abbey.

More extraordinary locations: inside an old military hospital like the very beautiful restaurant The Jane, in Belgium; inside a bank safe like Trinity Place restaurant, in New York; and even inside a nuclear bunker like Bunkr Parukarka, in Prague.

However, for an original restaurant, try one where you don´t know what it is, because everything is in darkness. That is the case of Dans Le Noir. The franchise started in Paris, although it now has premises in di erent parts of the world. The only condition for eating here is abandoning your sight and letting yourself be carried away by the other senses. A creative experience to say the least and with an added curiosity; their sta is formed by people who are actually blind.

Las últimas propuestas de esta original ruta gastronómica nos lleva a dos lugares que desde luego no dejan indiferentes. Tan sorprendentes que abarcan de un extremo al otro del termómetro.

El primero de ellos se llama Snow Castle, se encuentra en Finlandia y está construido en su totalidad de nieve o hielo, incluso las mesas. Más vale ir bien abrigado porque la temperatura aquí está a menos cinco grados.

Los que prefieran el calor siempre pueden optar por comer junto al corazón hirviente de un volcán. Esto solo es posible en el restaurante El Diablo, en Lanzarote. Situado en el parque nacional de Timanfaya, a quince metros de profundidad, este restaurante aprovecha el calor geotérmico de la tierra para cocinar deliciosa carne a la parrilla. 600 grados centígrados salen de este fogón natural. El broche de oro para una lista de infarto que nos demuestra que quien se aburre comiendo es porque quiere.

Eating at extreme temperatures

The last proposals in this original gastronomic route take us to two places that of course don´t fail to make an impression. They are so surprising that they go from one extreme of the thermometer to the other.

The first of them is called Snow Castle, it is in Finland and it is completely built from snow or ice, even the tables. You better go well wrapped up because the temperature here is minus five degrees.

Those who prefer het can always choose to eat next to the boiling heart of a volcano. This is only possible at the restaurant El Diablo, in Lanzarote. Located in Timanfaya national park, at a depth of fifteen metres, this restaurant uses geothermal heat from the earth to cook delicious meat on the grill. 600 degrees centigrade come from this natural stove. A few years ago in an interview in these same pages, Javier Quintas, director of series such as El Principe (The Prince) and Money Heist, said that television was a vehicle for telling the stories that cinema could not take on. Uno de los productos audiovisuales más esperados para fandom y público en general y una arriesgada (y muy costosa) apuesta teniendo en cuenta los brillantes precedentes de los films de Peter Jackson. Lejos de amilanarse, la serie trata de mirar cara a cara a aquellas películas ya legendarias con un diseño de producción digno de la mejor superproducción de Hollywood y la impecable factura visual a cargo (en sus dos primeros episodios) de Juan Antonio Bayona, el director español apadrinado por Spielberg y responsable de películas como “Lo imposible”, “Un monstruo viene a verme” o “Jurassic World: El reino caído”. De momento, luces y sombras, pues no todos los personajes gozan del carisma de Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas y compañía (sí su estupenda Galadriel protagonista) y su condición de precuela está dejando más incertidumbres que certezas argumentales, pero la cosa no ha hecho más que empezar y ya hay luz verde a una segunda temporada, por lo que todo apunta a que habrá universo Tolkien (debates sobre la fidelidad a su obra aparte, la serie cuenta con el beneplácito de sus herederos) para rato.

One of the most eagerly-awaited audiovisual products for fans and the general public and a risky (and very expensive bet) bearing in mind the brilliant previous films of Peter Jackson. Far from being intimidate, the series try to stare into the face of those now legendary films with production design worthy of the best Hollywood blockbuster and the impeccable visual look (in the first two episodes) of Juan Antonio Bayona, the Spanish director supported by Spielberg and responsible for films such as “The Impossible”, “A Monster Calls” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”. At the moment, light and shade, as not all of the characters enjoy the charisma of Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas and company (the fantastic lead character Galadriel does) and its prequel status is providing more doubts than certainties in the plot, but it has only got started and there is already the green light for a second season, so everything points to there being a Tolkien universe (debates about the faithfulness to his work aside, the series has the approval of his heirs) for a while.

Si la expectación por “Los anillos de poder” era máxima debido al recuerdo de la trilogía cinematográfica “El señor de los anillos” y, en menor medida, “El hobbit”, en el caso del universo creado por George R. R. Martin muchos espectadores veían con escepticismo esta serie-precuela ambientada 200 años antes a causa del sabor agridulce dejado por las últimas temporadas de “Juego de tronos”, creadas al 100% por su equipo de guionistas debido al letárgico ritmo de trabajo del escritor norteamericano. Contra pronóstico y lejos de los excesos con pretensión de blockbuster que malograron el final de aquella, “La casa del dragón” vuelve a las esencias de lo que era el producto original: una asfixiante intriga palaciega de atmósfera turbia y enrarecido clima fantástico con puntuales explosiones de violencia. En definitiva, puro pulp para adultos con el sello de calidad HBO de toda la vida. Esperemos que no vuelvan a salirse del camino.

Although expectation for “The Rings of Power” was maximum due to the memory of the film trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” and to a lesser extent, “The Hobbit”, in the case of the universe created by George R. R. Martin many viewers were sceptical about this prequel-series set 200 years earlier due to the bittersweet taste left by the last seasons of “Game of Thrones” created 100% by its team of scriptwriters due to the lethargic pace of work of the American writer. Against predictions and far from the excesses with the aims of a blockbuster, which ruined the end of the former, “House of the Dragon” returns to the essence of the original product: a stifling palace intrigue with a murky and rarefied fantasy atmosphere with occasional explosions of violence. Ultimately, pure pulp for adults with the classic HBO seal of quality. Let´s hope that they don´t go off track again.

LA HISTORIA DE JEFFREY DAHMER THE JEFFREY DAHMER STORY

Hablar de Ryan Murphy es hacerlo de uno de los productores televisivos más importantes del momento. Con sus aciertos y errores (no me hagan recordar la desastrosa adaptación del musical “The Prom”), el creador de “American Horror Story” y “Glee” ha dado en el clavo con esta experiencia inmersiva en cuerpo y espíritu de uno de los mayores asesinos en serie que ha dado la historia de los Estados Unidos. Bordeando muchos límites (incluidos los del sensacionalismo, tan inherente a veces a los trabajos de este showrunner) y apoyándose en experimentados cineastas como el afroamericano Carl Franklin, Murphy ha conseguido sumergir al espectador en una enfermiza espiral de demencia tan bien narrada como incómoda, áspera y adictiva. Poca gente hay que no conozca el historial de este monstruo, pero nunca nadie ha estado tan cerca de experimentarlo. El trabajo interpretativo de Evan Peters es de otra liga.

Talking about Ryan Murphy means talking about one of the most important television producers of the moment. With his successes and mistakes (don´t remind me of the disastrous adaptation of the musical “The Prom”), the creator of “American Horror Story” and “Glee” has hit the nail on the head with this immersive experience in body and mind into one of the biggest serial killers in the history of the United States. Edging on so many limits (including those of sensationalism, so inherent sometimes to the work of this showrunner) and using experienced filmmakers such as the African American Carl Franklin, Murphy has managed to immerse the viewer in a sickly spiral of madness as well-narrated as it is uncomfortable, rough and addictive. Few people are unaware of the story of this monster, but nobody has ever come so close to experiencing it. The acting work of Evan Peters is in another league.

El buen momento de la ficción televisiva israelí es confirmado con esta interesante miniserie que parte de una original premisa: en un instituto, una discusión política acerca del conflicto entre Israel y Palestina acaba con una agria discusión entre un profesor y una alumna de 17 años, hasta el punto de llegar a lo personal y trascender los muros del centro educativo. Deudora de films como el alemán “La ola”, esta miniserie de tan sólo seis capítulos de 40 minutos es ideal para un fin de semana lluvioso y salir un poco de los márgenes del entretenimiento mainstream.

ANDOR/ ANDOR

Los fans de Star Wars están de continua enhorabuena. Qué mejor para recuperarse del (relativo) chasco que fue la serie de Obi-Wan (con problemas formales pero soluciones de guión muy satisfactorias finalmente) que sumergirse en el personaje principal de la que quizá fue la mejor de las películas modernas que se dedicaron a la saga: “Rogue One, una historia de Star Wars”. El guionista y director de prestigio Tony Gilroy se ha encargado de orquestar un relato adulto y cocinado a fuego lento que intenta dar complejidad a toda la estulticia que ha rodeado a la franquicia en esos últimos años de secuelas aceleradas y remakes encubiertos. No es nada parecido a todo lo visto últimamente pero se mueve en el universo que todos amamos, así que merece la pena, cuando menos, darle una oportunidad.

LA LECCIÓN/ THE LESSON

The good period for Israeli television drama is confirmed with this interesting mini-series that is based on an original premise: in a school, a political discussion regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine ends with a bitter argument between a teacher and a 17-year-old female pupil, to the extent that it becomes personal and goes beyond the walls of the school. Indebted to films such as the German film “The Wave”, this miniseries with just six 40-minute episodes is ideal for a rainy week and getting out of the margins of mainstream entertainment a little.

TED LASSO/ TED LASSO

Con la tercera (y última, según sus creadores) temporada en el horizonte, es hora de que quien todavía no le haya dado una oportunidad a esta deliciosa comedia pueda expiar sus pecados. Ted Lasso (un genial Jason Sudeikis) narra en clave sitcom las vivencias de un entrenador de fútbol americano en un equipo de soccer (nuestro fútbol, vamos) británico y a partir de tan imposible premisa arma una encantadora fábula sobre el éxito y el fracaso, el amor y el abandono, la amistad y la fricción, la pérdida y el olvido, afrontar o huir y volver a empezar. Detrás de sus geniales gags y afilados diálogos, en Ted Lasso subyace la más humanista de las visiones sobre la vida.

Fans of Star Wars are constantly celebrating. What better way to recover from the (relative) failure of the Obi-Wan series (with formal problems but ultimately very satisfactory script solutions) than delving into the main character of what was perhaps the best of the modern films devoted to the saga: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. The scriptwriter and prestigious director Tony Gilroy was responsible for orchestrating an adult and slowburning story that attempts to add complexity to all the silliness that has surrounded the franchise in the recent years of accelerated sequels and concealed remakes. It is not similar at all to what we have seen lately but it moves within the universe that we all love, so it is worthwhile, at least, to give it a chance.

With the third (and last, according to its creators) season on the horizon, it is time for those who still haven´t given a chance to this fantastic comedy to atone for their sins. Ted Lasso (a brilliant Jason Sudeikis) narrates in sitcom style the experiences of an American football coach in a British soccer team (our football) and based on such an impossible premise it weaves a charming tale about success and failure, love and abandonment, friendship and friction, loss and forgetfulness, facing up to things or fleeing and starting again. Behind its brilliant gags and sharp dialogue, underlying in Ted Lasso is the most humanistic vision of life.

Lo importante es ir bien armado con una navaja, una cesta de mimbre y seguir unos consejos básicos para cualquier recolector: solicitar los permisos necesarios para poder practicar la actividad, ya sea dentro del parque natural o en un coto privado; realizar la búsqueda con el máximo respeto al entorno –observando bien dónde pisar, evitando dejar basura- y, sobre todo, no arrancar una seta si no hay seguridad total de que ésta sea comestible. Ante la más mínima duda lo mejor es excluirla y no arriesgarse a un error del que uno se pueda arrepentir.

Quizá por eso, para los recién iniciados lo más recomendable sea contratar un guía que le oriente sobre la mejor forma de hacer la recolección de manera respetuosa y segura. También hay ayuntamientos como Los Barrios, Jimena de la Frontera o Benalup-Casas Viejas que organizan anualmente jornadas micológicas, en las que invitan a niños y mayores, con expertos sobre el terreno.

The important thing is to go wellequipped with a knife, a wicker basket and to follow basic tips for any forager: request the permits needed to do the activity, whether within the natural park or on private hunting ground; search with utmost respect for the environment -looking where you tread, not leaving behind rubbish- and, above all, do not pick a mushroom if you are not completely sure that it is edible. If you have the slightest doubt it is best to exclude it and not take the risk of a mistake that you could regret.

Perhaps because of that, for the newly initiated the most advisable thing would be to hire a guide to give you advice about the best way to collect in a respectful and safe way. There are also councils such as Los Barrios, Jimena de la Frontera and Benalup-Casas Viejas that organise mycological open days, that invite children and adults, with experts on the region.

Salir de excursión en busca de setas puede ser un plan de lo más original para compartir con familia y amigos ya que combina el ejercicio moderado, el disfrute del paisaje, el contacto con la naturaleza y, por supuesto, la buena gastronomía. Porque sin duda lo mejor de rastrear los bosques es poder degustar más tarde todo nuestro botín, ya sea en guisos, salteados, a la plancha o con arroz. No hay receta que no mejore con un buen puñado de setas.

The ninth edition of Sotogrande Golf Circuit has reached its final after an extraordinary route through five qualifying events: La Reserva Club Sotogrande, Almenara Golf – SO/ Sotogrande, New Course Zagaleta, La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort and Fairplay Hotel Golf & SPA. A unique and memorable edition in which more than 400 participants enjoyed a very intense experience at a very high level.

The three last events took place in three very di erent locations, Zagaleta, La Hacienda and Fairplay, all within very high-end resorts to o er a day of great quality to all the participants.

At La Zagaleta, the special prizes went to: Karl Elschner (Closest ball unchanged, hole 2); Deborah Mcwhinnie and Mark Littlewood (Longest drive, in the Women´s and Men´s on hole 4). In the Women´s Category, victory went

to Deboprah Mcwhinnie, followed by Christine Bowers and Natalia Danilo. In the Men´s Second Category, victory went to John Hazzard, followed by Domingo Plazas and Joseph Trubshaw; while in the Men´s First Category, the winner was Karl Heinz Elschner, followed by Juan M. Pérez Jurado and Thomas FInbor.

The good work at La Hacienda earned special prizes for: José Muñoz (Closest ball, unchanged at hole 8) and Lucía de los Arcos and Jaime Loca (Longest drive in Women´s and Men´s at the 18th). In the Women´s Category, victory went to María José Castaño, followed by Elizaveta Ordzhonikidze and Inés Obarrio. In the Men´s Second Category, victory went to José María Caballero, followed by José Santa Cruz and Francisco Muñoz; while in the Men´s First Category, Pablo Leria took victory followed by Juan Pedro Tassar and Dayron Ruiz.

Mientras que en Fairplay hubo tiempo para la celebración y el recuerdo, resaltar la presencia de una invitación de cortesía para Francisco J. Doncel como ganador del Premio a la Fidelidad ‘Óscar Villanueva’. La Bola más cercana fue para José M. Caballeros; mientras que el Drive más largo fue para Brian McWhinnie y Silvia Ariza (en Damas). En la Cat. Damas la victoria fue para Deborah McWhinnie, seguida de Christine Bowers y Diane Bradbury; en la Segunda Cat. Caballeros el triunfo fue para Francicso López, seguido de Francisco J. Doncel y Joseph Trubshaw.

Finalmente, en la Primera Cat. Caballeros se impuso Francisco Muñoz Lara, seguido de Mark Littlewood y Paul Mercer.
