El verano brilla en Sotogrande Déjenme que les narre, brevemente, cómo Sotogrande adquiere un brillo especial al llegar el verano. Si uno sale a pasear por sus amplias calles encuentra todo más bello que nunca. Las casas lucen majestuosas al paso del caminante, que disfruta de los mejores aromas de las diversas plantas que asoman por los muretes de impresionantes villas. Las calles se muestran salpicadas de gente que, con pausa y tranquilidad, disfrutan de su urbanización montando en bici, patinando, o simplemente, caminando. Las playas, serenas, reciben a los bañistas, que se sumergen en sus aguas limpias o se tumban al sol para pasar horas interminables de paz. Los club, los bares, los chiringuitos, se llenan de vida, de música, de buena comida, para dar a quienes los buscan, diversión en estado puro. Las noches se tornan interminables, llenas de charlas, reencuentros, risas…Los días despiertan animados, llenos de ideas con las que pasarlo bien, con golf, con polo, con náutica…Así, se torna Sotogrande al llegar el verano: Inmejorable. La Revista de Sotogrande recibe la nueva estación con los honores que se merece: dando a sus lectores un nutrido grupo de contenidos con los que festejar que el verano arrancó en una urbanización donde el sol parece calentar de forma diferente. Entre otros interesantes contenidos, les sugerimos que no se pierdan, por ejemplo, la entrevista realizada a la bella Vicky Martín Berrocal. No duden, además, en dejarse atrapar por el viaje de esta edición: Marruecos. Siempre he dicho que me siento una privilegiada: empecŽ mi carrera en golf a la vez que Seve Ballesteros, el Open de Espa– a de 1974 en La Manga fue nuestro primer torneo del Circuito Europeo. Nos hicimos muy amigos y tuve la suerte y el privilegio de compartir 28 a– os con Ž l, acompa– ‡ ndole en incontables e inolvidables momentos dentro y fuera de los campos de golf.

a primera vez que Seve estuvo en Sotogrande fue en la Semana Santa de 1978 invitado por mí. Del 77 al 80 y de septiembre a abril, Ward Wallace –director de marketing de Financiera Sotogrande- me pidió que trabajase con él para encargarme de las relaciones públicas y protocolo; el resto del año colaboraba con una agencia de viajes inglesa pionera en mover a los golfistas por Europa viajando a todos los torneos. Invité a Seve, Manolo Piñero y Antonio Garrido a pasar unos días en Sotogrande como preparación al Masters de

Augusta, y aceptaron encantados. Estuvieron cinco días y se alojaron en los bungalows del “campo de abajo” (Real Club de Golf Sotogrande). Por la mañana entrenaban junto a Juan Quirós y Juan Zumaquero o con Tony Jacklin, a quien habían encomendado la promoción del “campo nuevo” de Las Aves, más tarde denominado Valderrama. Por la noche yo organizaba cenas agradables y tranquilas, con poca gente para que se sintieran a gusto, contando siempre con Richard Denman, Ignacio Álvarez de Toledo, Harriet Högström, Amparo y Miguel Preysler y Corina Oppenheim. Recuerdo una noche muy divertida en Los Abanicos, el bar del Hotel Tenis.

Por la noche yo organizaba cenas agradables y tranquilas, con poca gente para que se sintieran a gusto. Recuerdo una noche muy divertida en Los Abanicos, el bar del Hotel Tenis. Seve no ganó aquel Masters, que se adjudicó su ídolo Gary Player, y sin embargo a los pocos días logró su primer título en Estados Unidos: The Greater Greensboro Open. Siempre reconoció que aquellos días en Sotogrande fueron un gran acierto. Su segunda visita se produjo nueve años más tarde, cuando en diciembre del 87 ganó el Campeonato de España celebrado en el RCG Sotogrande, y al año siguiente participó en la primera edición del Volvo Masters en Valderrama, un título que estuvo apunto de llevarse en esa ocasión y también en el 94, de no haberse interpuesto en su camino un dropaje que le dejó a un golpe de Langer. En el 97 volvió a Valderrama como capitán del equipo europeo de la Ryder Cup y vivió una de las semanas más emocionantes de toda su carrera. Seve ponía el cien por cien de pasión en todo lo que hacía, y si había un torneo que le apasionaba por encima de todos era la Ryder Cup. Aquella de Valderrama fue “su” Ryder. ¡Cómo

alongside Seve I have always said that I feel privileged: I started my golf career at the same time as Seve Ballesteros. The Spanish Open of 1974 at La Manga was our ﬁrst European Tour competition. We became good friends and I was fortunate and privileged enough to share 28 years with him, accompanying him in countless unforgettable moments both on and off the golf courses.

he first time Seve was in Sotogrande it was when I invited him over Easter in 1978. From 77 to 80 and from September to April, Ward Wallace (the Financiera Sotogrande marketing manager) asked me to work with him to take care of public relations and protocol; the rest of the year I worked with an English travel agency that was the first to focus on taking golfers around Europe to all the tournaments. I invited Seve, Manolo Piñero and Antonio Garrido to spend a few days in Sotogrande in preparation for the Augusta Masters and they were delighted to accept. They were here for five days and stayed at the ‘bottom course’ (Real Club de Golf Sotogrande) chalets. In the morning they trained alongside Juan Quirós and Juan Zumaquero or with Tony Jacklin, who had been given the task of promoting the ‘new course’, Las Aves, which later became Valderrama. At night I organised quiet and pleasant dinners with just a few peo-

ple so they would feel at ease, with Richard Denman, Ignacio Álvarez de Toledo, Harriet Högström, Amparo and Miguel Preysler and Corina Oppenheim always present. I remember a really fun night at Los Abanicos, the Hotel Tenis bar. Seve did not win that Masters, which went to his idol Gary Player; however, just a few days later he achieved his first United States title: the Greater Greensboro Open. He always acknowledged that the decision to spend those days in Sotogrande was a good one. His second visit was nine years later, when in December 87 he won the Spanish Championships held at RCG Sotogrande, and the next year he took part in the first ever Volvo Masters at Valderrama, a title that he fell just short of winning on that occasion and also in 94; if only he hadn’t had to take a drop that left him a stroke behind Langer. In 97 he returned to Valderrama as captain of the European Ryder Cup team and enjoyed one of the most exciting weeks of his career. Seve put all his passion into everything he did and if there was a tournament that thrilled him above all others it was the Ryder Cup. The Valderra-

En 2011 la apuesta es aún mayor, ya que habrá dos torneos simultáneos. Uno masculino de seis equipos participantes y otro femenino de cuatro. Además, el evento contará con la presencia de figuras internacionales, como Adolfo Cambiaso, mejor polista de la historia del

deporte de reyes. “Estamos muy entusiasmados con la llegada del 2° Ibiza Beach Polo Cup. Ha sido un año de arduo trabajo para lograr que el evento sea nuevamente un éxito. Muchos de los excelente jugadores que participaron el torneo pasado vuelven a la isla para participar, como Gabriel Batistuta, y este año tenemos la fortuna de contar con la presencia de Adolfo Cambiaso, que es mi amigo personal, es el mejor jugador del mundo, y viene a jugar en el 2° Ibiza Beach Polo Cup”, comenta Gabriel Iglesias, organizador del evento.

Llega el verano y con él, vuelve el club de playa favorito de muchos residentes: el Cucurucho. Uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de la urbanización y el destino perfecto para disfrutar en familia de las largas jornadas estivales. Como cada temporada, el club abre sus puertas con aires renovados, numerosas actividades y la mejor restauración. Todo, pensado, siempre, para dar a Sotogrande han sido el escenario donde un nutrido grupo de familias un verano de lujo.

er 2011 flamenco collection is called Sueño flamenco (‘Flamenco Dream’); how does Vicky dream about her homeland? How have you dreamed up your garments? My homeland is my constant inspiration! My collection is called Sueño flamenco because, whatever I do, whether it has fills or not, is inspired by the south; even if it's dreamed up in New York, it will have flamenco in its spirit. You favourite city to live in is Seville; which part of it are you most fond of? Every square, every nook and cranny... but there is one place where I like to sit and dream... Calle Betis... gazing at the Giralda (the cathedral's weathercock), the Torre del Oro (the ‘Gold Tower’) and the Maestranza bullring. What does a stroll around the Murillo gardens or Plaza de Santa Cruz, for instance, inspire in you? Peace, serenity, beauty... In addition to flamenco fashion, you are also known for your party wear; what look would you recommend for a night out, let’s say at the polo in Sotogrande? A sensual, feminine dress that sets off some part of the female figure. When are you planning to have a break in the resort? I love Sotogrande and I have some great memories of being there... I always want to go back. Accessories are another important part of your work; which can you never go

without in order to be radiant? A hooped earring, a fan, a shawl, accessories that are very Andalusian, feminine and which bring out a woman’s beauty. You have a large collection for brides on their wedding day; how do you come up with the perfect dress? The bride’s dream dress. Who would you like to dress for the big ‘I do’? Angelina Jolie... one of the dresses in my latest evening collection was made with her in mind. Have you ever thought of designing for men? No, never, it’s a world I don’t know anything about. What moment in your career do you remember most fondly? All of them! Over the past seven years bit by bit I have made my dream come true and I have unforgettable memories... Dressing the Barbie doll, having a display at Harrods, when one of my dresses was photographed by Annie Leibovitz. and my biggest dream of all, to be able to dress women. El Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, dedicado a Nicolas-Mathieu Rieussec, inventor del cron— grafo en 1821, es el primer movimiento propio de la marca, desarrollado y fabricado en los propios talleres de Montblanc. ieussec era el relojero personal del rey francés Luis XVIII, quien le encargó registrar los tiempos de todos los caballos, a su paso por la línea de meta, durante una carrera celebrada el 1 de septiembre de 1821 en París. Su cronógrafo era una caja de madera que contenía un movimiento de reloj que controlaba dos esferas giratorias sobre la tapa. Por encima de éstas había un índice fijo que dejaba una gota de tinta sobre las esferas giratorias cuando se pulsaba un botón. Por primera vez, este mecanismo permitió registrar los tiempos exactos realizados por cada caballo. ieussec was the personal watchmaker to the French King Louis XVIII, who commissioned him to time all of the horses as they crossed the finishing line in a race held on September 1, 1821, in Paris. His chronograph was a wooden box that contained a clock movement that controlled two rotating dials on the cover. On top of these there was a fixed indicator that left a drop of ink on the rotating dials when a button was pressed. For the first time, this mechanism meant that the exact times of each horse could be recorded. The method used gave

Una inspiración basada en un mito que se convierte en otro mito

uenta una antigua leyenda de tiempos de la conquista del nuevo mundo, que en un lugar de la selva amaz— nica pr— ximo al Perœ se ubicaba una cultura que atesoraba incalcula-

bles riquezas. Su soberano, de manera ritual, sobre una embarcaci— n en medio de un lago, se cubr’a de polvos de oro y se tiraba a las aguas. Los tesoros, las piedras preciosas y las riquezas que all’ se encontraban eran inimaginables, y de ah’ que se conociese como El Dorado a esta zona emplazada en los altos de las cuencas del Amazonas y el Orinoco.

urante siglos, muchos hombres se aventuraron, de manera infructuosa, a la búsqueda de esta maravillosa y misteriosa tierra, llegando a perder, muchos de ellos, hasta su propia vida. Y la leyenda, siguió alimentándose… Cuando en 1959 Cadillac decide poner en el mercado un automóvil de referencia, extraordinario, lujoso, y dotado de los adelantos técnicos del momento, sin lugar a dudas, encuentra en esta fábula el argumento ideal para denominarlo. Como aquella soñada región del sur americano, el

Cadillac Eldorado, desarrollado por el equipo de Harley J. Earl, rebosaba una riqueza de equipamiento sin par. Las interminables listas de accesorios y terminaciones hablaban por si solas: tapicería de cuero, parabrisas panorámico, aire acondicionado, elevalunas eléctricos, radio con preselección de emisoras, ruedas de radios cromados… Para hacerse una idea, Eldorado costaba casi el doble que un descapotable medio de la misma casa. El apartado mecánico redundaba en la misma idea de magnificencia y exclusividad. Todo en él, estaba pensado para hacer de un viaje, una experiencia agradable y placentera, donde la suavidad y la fuerza del motor a la hora de transitar por las largas autopistas americanas, fueran la tónica principal. El modelo Eldorado se convirtió en el buque insignia de la compañía General Motors El modelo Eldorado pasará a convertirse desde aquel momento en el buque insignia de la Compañía General Motors, y, a los ojos de cualquier observador, en la máxima expresión de la suntuosidad, el idealismo y la superioridad de un país exultante y próspero que ya había dado cerrojazo a las crisis económicas de décadas anteriores. Frente al pragmatismo de una Europa ocupada en su reconstrucción, la burguesía estadounidense, vivía a aquel lado del Atlántico, un período dulce, imbuida entre la opulencia doméstica, los televisores y los tostadores eléctricos, los sueños aeroespaciales, el blues y las

estrellas de Hollywood. Como un espejo de este modo de vida, los años cincuenta habían traído un estilo automovilístico, cargado de cromados y curvas, mayor superficie acristalada, barrocos parachoques sobredimensionados, y unas formas que pronto se convertirían en canon de una generación. En ello tuvo una influencia incuestionable la admiración despertada por la aviación militar durante la guerra. Los diseñadores se apresuraron a extrapolar al automóvil las líneas maestras de las aeronaves, inspirándose en las formas del fuselaje y en la elevación de los timones de dirección. A partir de ahí, el visionario y prolífico Harley J. Earl y su equipo irían dando forma al Eldorado, al tiempo que aquel chico de largas patillas y sobresaliente tupé, que en 1954 había irrumpido tímidamente en un escenario de Memphis, extendía su reinado dentro y fuera de América. Elvis

y el Eldorado se engrandecerán año a año casi de la mano, y el “rey del rock & roll” llegaría a reunir una envidiable colección particular de Cadillac. El derroche estilístico vertido en el Eldorado llegó a su cenit con el que acabaría siendo la obra maestra de Earl: El inigualable modelo 59. Símbolo de la ostentación mas desmesurada, donde las aletas se habían convertido en auténticas derivas extraídas del fuselaje de un avión a reacción. La propia Cadillac, admitiría que este coche fue el más pretencioso jamás construido, pero sin duda representó sobre cuatro ruedas el mito más inalcanzable de todos los tiempos: El Dorado. n

n old legend from the time of the conquest of the new world tells the story of a place in the Amazon jungle near Peru where there was a culture that hoarded incalculable wealth. Its ruler would ritually cover himself in gold dust on a boat in the middle of a lake, and throw himself into the water. The treasure, precious stones and riches to be found there were unimaginable, so the area in the upper reaches of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins became known as El Dorado (ÔT he Golden OneÕ) .

or centuries, and to no avail, many men ventured out in search of this fabulous and mysterious land, many of them losing their lives in the attempt. And the legend continued to grow... When in 1959 Cadillac decided to release a flagship automobile, an extraordinary, luxurious car equipped with the latest technological advances of the time, this tale was undoubtedly the ideal inspiration for its name. Like that fabled region of South America, the Cadillac Eldorado, developed by the Harley J. Earl team, was brimming with all the extras. The endless list of accessories and finishes spoke for themselves: leather upholstery, panoramic windscreens, air conditioning, electric windows, a radio with preselected stations, chrome-spoked wheels... To give you an idea, the Eldorado came at a cost almost double that of the average convertible from the same company. The mechanics reflected the same idea of magnificence and exclusivity. Everything in the car was designed to make journeys a pleasant and enjoyable experience, in which the smoothness and power of the motor when

it came to driving on the long American highways were the keynote. Under the bonnet, a powerful V8 engine, power steering, assisted breaks and automatic gears ensured the desired vigour and comfort. From that moment on the Eldorado model became the flagship of the General Motors Corporation and, in the eyes of anyone who saw it, it was the epitome of the opulence, idealism and superiority of an exultant and prosperous country that had slammed the door on the economic crises of earlier decades. In contrast to the pragmatism of a Europe concerned with its reconstruction, on the other side of the Atlantic the US middle classes were enjoying their heyday, steeped in domestic luxury, televisions and electric toasters, dreams of conquering space, the blues and the stars of Hollywood. Mirroring this way of life, the fifties brought with them a style of automobile replete with chrome and curves, bigger glass surfaces, oversized baroque bumpers and shapes that would soon become the symbol of a generation. In these there was an unquestionable influence from an admiration for military aviation

arising during the war. The designers were quick to extrapolate the aeroplanes’ lines to the automobile, taking inspiration from the fuselage shapes and the elevation of the rudders. With this as their starting point, the visionary and prolific Harley J. Earl and his team gradually developed the Eldorado, while that boy with long sideburns and a protruding quiff, who in 1954 had timidly arrived on the scene in Memphis, spread his dominions within America and overseas. Elvis and Eldorado grew in stature alongside each other with every year that went by, and the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ built up an enviable private Cadillac collection. The stylistic extravagance of the Eldorado would reach its zenith with the car that would become Earl’s masterpiece: the unrivalled model 59, a symbol of the most unrestrained ostentation, in which the wings looked like they had been taken straight from the fuselage of a jet aircraft. Cadillac themselves admitted that this car was the most pretentious ever built, but without doubt it was a representation on four wheels of the most unattainable legend of all time, El Dorado.n

LA PUERTA DEL DESIERTO

Ouarzazate es conocido por muchos como la puerta del desierto. Por sus caminos transitaban hace tiempo las caravanas transaharianas, que conectaban Marrakech con Tombuctú. Su nombre, Ouarzazate, viene del bereber y significa ‘sin ruido’. Una definición perfecta para hablar de una tierra donde la tranquilidad se cuela por cada rincón. Algo que la ha convertido en el destino idóneo de aquellos que buscan encontrar la paz en un mundo totalmente distinto al suyo. Si algo embruja en Ouarzazate, y en el sur de Marruecos, son sus paisajes, llenos de contrastes, tonalidades y colorido. Estampas irrepetibles que parecen sacadas de un cuento y con las que cualquier visitante quedará sorprendido. Imágenes que se completan, además, con las kasbahs (viviendas fortificadas) y Ksour (pueblos amurallados) de adobe, construcciones inimaginables que parecen nacer de la propia tierra y que transportan a quien las visita a otra época. Es imposible alejarse de Ouarzazate sin acudir, por ejemplo, a la kasbah de Aït Benhaddou. Pieza emblemática con la que disfrutar de la arquitectura tradicional del lugar y un buen anticipo de la famosa ruta de las 1.000 kasbahs. Como en el resto del camino, el sur sorprende a cada paso con su cultura y sus tradiciones. En Ouarzazate se tornará irresistible adquirir alguna alfombra, cesta de caña, alfarería o cualquier otra artesanía local con la que recordar, a cada mirada, que un día se estuvo lejos del mundo. DESTINO DE CINE

Desde 1984, Ouarzazate es, además, un destino de cine. Sus magníficas condiciones climáticas, geográficas y económicas empujaron a muchos estudios cinematográficos a instalarse en la zona. Hoy es posible visitar grandes decorados de superproducciones de la talla de Lawrence de Arabia, Moises o Gladiator. Desde Ouarzazate, se abren inagotables rutas que conducen a las mil maravillas del sur marroquí. Hacia Boumalne, se extiende el árido valle del Dades, salpicado de kasbahs y ksur de una singularidad incomparable que configuran la denominada ruta de las 1.000 Kasbahs. En este recorrido es recomendable dejarse llevar y desviarse un poco de la carretera para contemplar, casi por sorpresa, las viviendas típicas de los bereberes que se alzan en adobe casi de forma mágica.

OASIS En este camino, será imprescindible realizar una pequeña parada en el palmeral de Skoura, un oasis de película donde recibir el frescor de la naturaleza, que parece haber elegido el lugar más insospechado para crecer. La siguiente estación serán las gargantas del Todra, que parecen atrapar al viajero estrechándose sobre su cabeza hasta límites casi prohibidos, ofreciendo instantáneas teñidas de rojo, malva y naranja sobre una tierra única que conduce al aventurero hasta Boumalne, atravesando las gargantas del Dades.

GEOGRAFÍA: Marruecos, cuya capital es Rabat, tiene una superficie de 450.000 km2. La cordillera del Atlas consta de tres macizos montañosos: el Gran Atlas, el Atlas Central y el Antiatlas, que llega hasta el litoral Atlántico y a cuyos pies se inicia el desierto del Sáhara. CLIMA: Entre desértico y templado, con temperaturas medias de 10 ºC (enero) a 25 ºC (julio). La zona del Atlas es húmeda y nieva con frecuencia, mientras que el sur registra un clima desértico con cambios extremos. IDIOMA: El árabe, beréber y francés. MONEDA: La divisa oficial es el Dirham. DOCUMENTACIÓN: Para viajar a Marruecos es necesario estar en posesión del pasaporte en vigor para estancias máximas de 90 días de duración. CÓMO LLEGAR: Volar primero hasta Casablanca y, allí, coger otro avión directo hasta el aeropuerto de Ouarzazate. También es posible volar hasta Marrakech y conducir unas cuatro horas por unos caminos de ensueño hasta Ouarzazate.

Más al este, aguarda uno de los rincones más sorprendentes: el Valle de las Rosas, cuya capital es la aldea fortificada de El Kelaa M`Gouna. Desde allí, en dirección al norte, y ascendiendo por el valle del M`Goun, el visitante encontrará un gran valle que a lo largo de más de treinta kilómetros se muestra repleto de rosas de una especie llamada damascena. Cuentan los lugareños que la primera rosa llegó en una caravana procedente de La

Meca y que al principio se utilizaba sólo para delimitar las tierras. Hoy, es tal la importancia de esta planta, que cada familia posee su plantación en porciones irregulares, que se mezclan con zonas silvestres de manera caprichosa ofreciendo una vista irrepetible de color y belleza. Más hacia el sur, se extiende el Valle del Drâa, otro de los rincones más privilegiados de este fascinante recorrido que baña el río que lleva su mismo nombre. Casi 200 kilómetros de estrecho oasis donde de forma increíble crecen palmeras datileras, acacias, adelfas, árboles frutales o henna. Un lugar paradisiaco en pleno corazón de un desierto árido y desasolado donde el viajero también disfrutará de destinos como el ksar de Tissergate, uno de los ksour que jalonan el valle y donde se pude contemplar el museo de artes y tradiciones bereber. La última parada de esta fascinante ruta será M´Hamid, el punto de partida para las excursiones saharianas. En Tinfou, dos altas dunas representan un anticipo del desierto. Para llegar completamente, hay que seguir hacia el oeste de M’Hamid hasta las largas dunas de Chigaga, donde se podrán apreciar montículos de hasta 150 metros. Pocos conocen los pequeños secretos del gran sur y eso que en toda la región abundan cosas sorprendentes por hacer, ver y vivir. Esto es sólo una mínima parte de un mundo fascinante que se encuentra a un paso de España y que todos deberían de visitar alguna vez. ■

Although there are a thousand roads to explore, we begin the journey in Ouarzazate, the starting point from which to admire the wonders of what has become known as the Great South.

THE GATEWAY TO THE DESERT

Ouarzazate is known by many as the gateway to the desert. Its roads were once trod by the transSaharan caravans which connected Marrakech with Timbuktu. Its name is Berber and it means ‘noiseless’, a perfect definition to describe a land imbued with tranquillity. This has made it the ideal destination for anyone looking for peace and quiet in a world that is completely different to their own. If there is one thing that enchants visitors in

Ouarzazate, in southern Morocco, it is its scenery, full of contrast, tones and colour. These unrepeatable scenes look like they are taken from a fairytale and will astonish anyone who travels here. The images are rounded off with kasbahs (fortified citadels) and ksours (walled villages) of clay, unimaginable constructions that look like they have sprouted up from the earth itself and which transport anyone who visits them to a time gone by. You cannot leave Ouarzazate, however, without visiting the Tiffoultoute kasbah or the Aït Benhaddou ksar. These emblematic sites are perfect for admiring the traditional local architecture and provide a good foretaste of the famous VALLEY OF A THOUSAND KASBAHS.

Throughout the route, the south astonishes visitors at every turn with its culture and traditions. In Ouarzazate you will not be able to resist acquiring a rug, reed basket, ceramics or some other

local craft object that will remind you every time you see it of your time far away from the world. FILM LOCATION

Since 1984, Ouarzazate has been a film location. Its magnificent weather conditions, geography and economic benefits enticed many film studios to set up shop in the area. Now it is possible to visit vast sets from blockbusters like Lawrence of Arabia, Moses and Gladiator. From Ouarzazate, there are endless trails leading to the thousand wonders of southern Morocco. Towards Boumalne lies the arid Dades Valley, dotted with unique kasbahs and ksurs that make up what is known as the ‘Valley of the Thousand Kasbahs’. On this trail you are advised to let yourself be carried along and stray from the road a little to discover the typical clay Berber homes that rise up almost magically from the earth.

the land. Now, the plant is so important that each family owns their plantation in irregular portions, whimsically mixed with wild areas to offer unrepeatable sights of colour and beauty. The roses are a source of income for many families of the south, who harvest them every season. To the delight of visitors, a great festival is held in honour of the rose in May, when petals are spread all around and the place is imbued with an intoxicating aroma. THE DRÂA VALLEY OASIS

An unmissable resting place along this route is the Skoura palm grove, an oasis fit for Hollywood in which to enjoy the coolness provided by nature, which seems to have chosen the most inconceivable place in which to grow. The next stopover will be the Todra Gorge, which seems to trap travellers in by narrowing over their heads at incredible heights, offering red-, mauve- and orange-tinted images of a unique land. The ravine takes the traveller to Boumalne, through the Dades Gorge. THE VALLEY OF ROSES

Further east one of the most surprising destinations awaits you: the Valley of Roses, the capital of which is the fortified village of El Kelaa M’Gouna. From here, in a northerly direction through the M’Goun Valley, visitors will encounter a large valley spanning thirty kilometres replete with Damask roses. The locals say that the first rose arrived on a caravan from Mecca and that at first it was only used to demarcate

To the south lies the Drâa Valley, another exceptional destination on this thrilling journey that gets its name from the river that runs through it. Almost 200 kilometres of narrow oases, where, incredibly, date palms, acacias, oleanders, fruit trees and henna grow. It is a heavenly place in the heart of an arid and desolate desert, where travellers can also enjoy destinations like the Tissergate ksar, one of the ksours that pepper the valley and home to the museum of Berber arts and traditions. The final stop on this fascinating tour will be M’Hamid, the starting point for excursions into the Sahara desert. At Tinfou, two high dunes offer a foretaste of the desert. For the full experience, continue to the west of M’Hamid to the long Chigaga dunes, where mounds of up to 150 metres can be admired. Few are privy to the little secrets of the Great South, but the region is full of surprising things to see, do and experience. This is just a tiny part of this fascinating world located just a stone’s throw from Spain, a place we should all visit at some time in our life.■

The Sotogrande Magazine dropped in at the specialist Marie Christine Bourtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consultation room at the Sotovital clinic to find out some basic tips to bear in mind to look after the skin in summer, using simple treatments with 100 % natural products. Before the period of exposure to the sun begins, Bourton explains that good cutaneous exfoliation must be carried out. The aim of this procedure is essentially to eliminate the dead cells accumulated over the winter months. This will ensure a more uniform skin which will receive the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rays evenly, avoiding, among other harmful effects, the unwanted blemishes that tend to appear on the body after sunbathing. Elige las opciones integrales, con multicereales y cocinadas de forma “aldentes”. Incluye alimentos ricos en proteínas en las principales comidas del día y, principalmente, en el desayuno. Aumentando sólo un 10% el contenido proteico de una comida provocamos la activación de la hormona PYY, responsable de inhibir las señales de hambre, es decir, de mantenernos saciados durante más tiempo. A su vez, la inclusión de proteínas en el desayuno también nos ayudará a mantener a raya otra hormona muy importante en el control del peso, la grelina, la cual es responsable de la sensación de hambre y de la apetencia por comidas muy calóricas. Toma sopas o purés. Esto nos mantiene saciados durante más tiempo que si tomamos los mismos alimentos en estado sólido y acompañado con agua. Debemos recordar que la sensación de apetito se despierta con el vaciado del estomago, si conseguimos retrasar el vaciado de los alimentos, nos mantendremos saciados durante mas tiempo. Evita comer en un buffet. Comer en un buffet despierta nuestro instinto de supervivencia y nos incita a probar una gran variedad de alimentos, aunque no tengamos apetito. En estas condiciones, solemos comer un 20% más de media.

Mientras realizamos ejercicio estamos quemando una gran cantidad de calorías procedentes del metabolismo de los hidratos de carbono y grasas. Pero, además, recientemente se ha descubierto que los principales beneficios se obtienen en lo que llamamos “la post-quema”, es decir, la quema de grasas una vez finalizada la actividad física, durante el período de recuperación. Durante las 24h después de realizar ejercicio físico, el organismo tiende a reestablecer los niveles de hidratos de carbono (glucógeno) en los músculos, por lo que no queda más remedio que acelerar la quema de grasas para mantener nuestras funciones vitales. Practica ejercicio físico invisible. Esto significa incorporar “pequeños gestos” en nuestra rutina diaria que conlleven algo de movimiento. Recuerda, nuestro cuerpo está diseñado para moverse y debemos ponérselo lo más fácil posible. Realiza pequeños desplazamientos a pie, no aparques justo en la puerta de casa o del trabajo, evita los ascensores y cintas automáticas, ayuda en las tareas domésticas; si trabajas en una oficina, levántate del asiento cada 30-40 min., y realiza algunos estiramientos y ejercicios de movilidad. La diferencia entre tener la intención de moverse y no tenerla es de hasta unas 300 kcal/día, en la mayoría de los casos, más que suficiente para mantener la balanza de peso controlada a nuestro favor.n

a contradiction, but it has been shown that long periods without food predispose us to putting on weight. Use smaller plates. This will help you to eat significantly smaller portions. Some studies have shown that by reducing the size of dishes, daily calorie intake is reduced by up to 22 % with the same feeling of appetite. Choose low-calorie or light products. There is currently a wide range of low-calorie food on the market and calorie intake can be reduced by up to 50 %. Reduce carbohydrate-rich food with a high glycaemic load as much as possible. Not just sugary drinks, desserts and industrial pastries, but also pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. Choose wholegrain, multi-cereal options cooked ‘al dente’. Include protein rich food in the main meals of the day and for breakfast in particular. Increasing the protein content of a meal by just 10 % activates the PYY hormone, responsible for inhibiting hunger signals, or in other words it will keep you satiated for longer. Including protein in breakfasts will also help you to keep at bay another very important hormone in weight control, ghrelin, which is responsible for feelings of hunger and an appetite for very calorie-rich food. Have soups or purées. This keeps you satiated for longer than if you have the same food in solid state accompanied by water. Remember that appetite is triggered when the stomach is empty; if you can delay the evacuation of food, you will stay satiated for longer. Avoid eating at buffets. Eating at a buffet triggers your survival instinct and prompts you to try a wide variety of food, even if you are not hungry. In these circumstances we tend to eat 20 % more than the average. Include skimmed dairy products. Calcium in milk, cheese and yoghurt sets the fat during digestion, causing it to be expelled from the body without being digested. A calciumrich diet eliminates double the amount of undigested fat than other diets.

• Do regular moderate physical activity. This is doubly

beneficial for weight control. While you do exercise you burn a large amount of calories by metabolising carbohydrates and fat. But it has also recently been shown that the main benefits are obtained in what we call ‘post-burning’, or in other words burning fat after physical activity, during the recovery period. For 24 hours after doing physical exercise, the body tends to re-establish carbohydrate (glycogen) levels in the muscles, so it has no alternative but to burn fat in order to maintain vital functions. Do invisible physical exercise. This means including ‘small gestures’ in your daily routine that involve some movement. Remember, the body is designed to move and we must make it as easy as possible for it. Make short journeys on foot, park away from the front door of your house or workplace, avoid lifts and automatic walkways, help out in domestic chores and, if you work in an office, get up from your chair every 30-40 minutes and do some stretches and mobility exercises. The difference between intending to move around and not intending to is of up to 300 kcal/day, which in most cases is sufficient to keep weight under control. n

A la sombra de los Picos

Comenzamos el viaje en el Valle de Liébana. Un maravilloso lugar delimitado por la Cordillera Cantábrica y los Picos de Europa, con parte de su territorio en la Reserva Nacional del Saja y en el Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa. Liébana es espectacular incluso desde su puerta de acceso, el desfiladero de la Hermida, una impresionante garganta de más de veinte kilómetros que ha ido excavando el río Deva en su camino hacia el Cantábrico. Su paisaje está dominado por la imponente presencia de los Picos, a los que se puede acceder a través de un

teleférico o mediante las muchas sendas y caminos de la zona. Sus pueblos son de una belleza singular y el paisaje es grandioso. Potes es la capital de Liébana, y está declarado Conjunto Histórico Monumental. La ciudad posee un buen número de edificios religiosos destacados, como las iglesias mozárabes de Santa María de Lebeña o Santa María de Piasca, de donde es destacable el Monasterio de Santo Toribio de Liébana, lugar donde se guarda el ‘Lignum Crucis’ el trozo más grande que se conserva de la cruz de Jesucristo. La Reserva Nacional de Caza del Saja, la mayor reserva cinegética de España, es la segunda parada de este viaje natural. Un territorio abrupto de gran riqueza forestal, con preciosos pueblos en los valles y en la zonas de media montaña. Por esta Cantabria transita una ruta de carácter histórico, la “Ruta de los Foramontanos”, llamada así por ser el camino que tomaban los cántabros que salían de las montañas tras la reconquista para repoblar las tierras de Castilla. En toda la Reserva abunda el ciervo, el corzo, el jabalí y el zorro. También se pueden ver especies avícolas como el buitre, el urogallo y el águila real, y más fácilmente otras especies menores de rapaces, como el cernícalo y el milano. en el otoño, la “berrea” de los venados, época en la que se puede escuchar la llamada de celo de los machos de esta especie; y la “pasá”, cuando se reúnen los rebaños de vacas tudancas –especie autóctona de la zona– en su regreso de los pastos altos. Los pueblos que atraviesa la ruta se caracterizan, sobre todo en la cuenca baja del Saja, por sus casonas de piedra, con grandes solanas y balcones. Pueblos como Carrejo, Ucieda, Ruente, Terán de Cabuérniga, Renedo de Cabuérniga o Fresneda son parte de un paisaje de pastos, praderías y monte bajo que sorprenderán al visitante. Otra localidad perteneciente al municipio de Cabuérniga y muy recomendable de visitar es Carmona que, a orillas del río Nansa, encierra un gran patrimonio histórico y artístico digno de contemplar. Ascendiendo el curso del río, nos encontramos con los pueblos de Saja, Los Tojos o Correpoco, algunos, incluso, como Colsa, han perdido a todos sus habitantes y aguardan al viajero solitarios y silenciosos. En medio de la reserva, hallamos el pintoresco pueblo de Bárcena Mayor, uno de los más visitados de Cantabria.Se trata de una pequeña localidad que ha permanecido casi intacta al paso del tiempo, hasta el punto de haber sido escenario de películas costumbristas. Sus casas, sus estrechas callejuelas, pequeña plazas, pajares y su viejo

puente, conforman un bello conjunto arquitectónico. Siguiendo la ruta de Saja hacia su nacimiento, nos encontramos con el puerto de Palombera, que divide los valles de Campoo y Cabuérniga, un espacio natural en el que abundan los hayedos y robledales y desde que se puede admirar un paisaje impresionante. Cabuérniga es una de las capitales indiscutibles del cocido montañés, el plato más característico de la región. Este guiso a base de alubias será excelente prácticamente en cualquiera de los numerosos establecimientos de la zona por lo que su degustación es casi obligada si se viaja a estas tierras. Los Valles del Pas, Pisueña y Miera conforman la comarca Pasiega, la última parada de esta apasionante ruta. La vida en los valles que bañan estos tres ríos siempre ha estado muy ligada a la ganadería, una actividad que ha creado un puzle de pequeños prados y cabañas que ha influido poderosamente en el paisaje. Localidades como la Vega de Pas, Selaya, Ontaneda o Puente Viesgo son parte de este paisaje en el que, además, se hallan las cuevas del Monte Castillo que comparten con Altamira y otras cinco cuevas la consideración de Patrimonio de la Humanidad. El broche de oro perfecto para un viaje, sin duda, inolvidable. ■

We start our trip in the Liébana Valley. A magnificent place mapped out by the Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos de Europa, it lies partly within the Saja Nature Reserve and partly in the Picos de Europa National Park. Liébana is spectacular even from the gateway that leads to it, the Hermida Ravine, an impressive gorge over twenty kilometres long forged by the River Deva on its way to the Bay of Biscay. The landscape is dominated by the imposing presence of the Picos (the ‘Peaks’), which can be reached by cable car or along one of the many paths and tracks in the area.

Its villages are of a singular beauty and the scenery is of epic proportions. Potes is the capital of Liébana and its has been given ‘Monumental Historic Site’ status. The area is home to a large number of notable religious buildings, like the Mozarabic churches of Santa María de Lebeña or Santa María de Piasca, as well as the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, which houses the ‘Lignum Crucis’, the biggest piece of the cross of Jesus Christ that has been preserved. Santo Toribio, alongside Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Jerusalem, is one of the four sacred locations where the holy jubilee year is celebrated. Liébana is also a wonderful gastronomic destination, which benefits, in part, from the local microclimate. The area has a rich tradition making cheese and cured cold cuts of wild boar and venison. The local dish is the cocido lebaniego, a chickpea stew. Liébana also produces honey, very good fruit, nuts and its famous orujo liqueur. Pure nature

The Saja National Hunting Reserve, the biggest of its kind in Spain, is the second stop on this nature tour. Among the valleys and mountainsides of this rugged land, covered in lush forest, nestle beautiful villages.

This part of Cantabria is home to a historic route, the ‘Trail of the Foramontanos’, which owes its name to the Cantabrians who came down from the mountains following the reconquest of the land from the Moors, enabling them to repopulate the Castilla area. The reserve abounds with deer, roe, wild boar and fox. Visitors can also see bird species like the vulture, capercailzie or golden eagle, or more frequently other smaller birds of prey, like the kestrel and kite. Two key times of year in this area are related to animal life: autumn, the berrea, or ‘bellowing’, of the deer, when the stags’ mating calls can be heard; and the pasá, when the herds of Tudanca cows (the local indigenous species), come together on their return from high pastures. The villages that the trail runs through, particularly in the lower reaches of the Saja, feature stone casonas, or mansions, with large terraces and balconies. Villages like Carrejo, Ucieda, Ruente, Terán de Cabuérniga, Renedo de Cabuérniga and Fresneda are part of a landscape of pastures, meadows and scrubland that surprises visitors. Another locality in the municipality of Cabuérniga well worth a visit is Carmona, where, on the banks of the River Nansa, visitors can admire plenty of historical and artistic heritage.

In the heart of the reserve lies the picturesque village of Bárcena Mayor, one of Cantabria’s most visited. This small locality has remained almost completely intact through time, and has been used as a setting for period films. Its houses, narrow streets, little squares, barns and old bridge form a beautiful architectural site. Following the course of the Saja to its source, we encounter the Palombera pass, which divides the valleys of Campoo and Cabuérniga, a natural space with an abundance of beech and oak groves, set in a spectacular landscape. Cabuérniga is one of the undisputed capitals of the cocido montañés, the most characteristic dish of the region. This bean stew will be excellent at any of the many establishments in the area, so sampling it is almost obligatory in these lands. The Pas, Pisueña and Miera Valleys make up the Comarca Pasiega, the last stage of this enthralling route. Life in the valleys that these three rivers run through has always been

SOME CANTABRIAN GEMS: Cabárceno The Cabárceno Nature Park is a manmade natural space which preserves the primitive beauty of its karstic landscape. The park spans 1,850 acres of a former open-cast mine. It is home to a hundred or so species from the five continents, which form a big family of over 1,200 animals living in semi-freedom. Camels, bears, tigers, kangaroos, antelope, bison, buffalo, zebra, ostriches, monkeys, lions and elephants... the entire park can be visited in one day and there are even bird of prey demonstrations that take place at midday and mid-afternoon.

a evolución del hombre en sus máximas expresiones artísticas ha copado todas sus vertientes. Lo que en la antigüedad se hacía principalmente desde óptica ritual o religiosa, el trascurrir del tiempo y la evolución de las necesidades de expresión a lo largo de los años han hecho que la utilización del arte haya ido adquiriendo, cada vez más, un componente estético y una función marcada especialmente por la finalidad estética, comunicativa y social. Lo que en los albores de la expresión artística era prácticamente impensable, hoy artistas como Xavier Carrillo lo han convertido en el medio que le permite expresar su visión del mundo que le rodea y en su forma de vida. No hay duda de que la revolución tecnológica ha marcado también el mundo artístico. El resultado son jóvenes artistas como el que con maestría ha inundado estas páginas de amor por el arte y máxima capacidad para fusionar fotografía

y manipulación digital. Así, lo que para muchos llegan a parecer obras pictóricas son en realidad fotografías del paisaje urbano que le rodea, materializadas bajo su óptica y tratadas con su creativa habilidad digital. Un proceso de expresión creativa que termina con la personalización única de cada copia, mediante el aplicado de barniz. De esta manera, el efecto visual entre el barniz y el tratamiento de la imagen logran un efecto pictórico siendo fotografía. Desde la ventaja que supone el total conocimiento de las herramientas, este artista de nuestro siglo guía su referente artístico en el propio estado de ánimo, dejando que la creatividad le embauque. Y fruto de ello, Xavi crea estas imágenes de impacto en las que se decanta por la recreación de paisajes urbanos donde, según sus palabras, “uno se ve identificado pero de modo expresivo, fotografiándolo todo y emocionándome porque ya estoy creando la imagen en mi mente, es extraordinario”.

Aunque ya empezó a tomar contacto con el mundo del diseño digital en 1999, el año 2004 supuso su verdadero salto con la participación en un concurso de cartelería, a través del que descubrió que el tipo de fotografías que él creaba llegaba al corazón visual de quien las observaba, llevándolo a adentrarse en el roll de las exposiciones. Desde entonces, este artista valenciano, natural de Carcaixent, ha realizado multitud de exposiciones, ha impartido numerosas ponencias y talleres, y ha recibido distinguidos premios y nominaciones del sector en su comunidad natal. Actualmente es miembro de la Asociación de Fotógrafos Profesionales de Valencia y de la Federación Española de Fotógrafos Profesionales. Xavi materializa su concepción del mundo que le rodea y consigue redireccionar la imaginación del hombre a un escenario real y al mismo tiempo casi de fantasía, donde la técnica pictórica y el dibujo le confieren una marcada personalidad.

he evolution of humans in their greatest artistic expressions has filled every creative field. Art used to be done from a primarily ritual or religious standpoint, but the passing of time and the evolution of expressive needs over the years have made art acquire an increasingly aesthetic use and a function characterised by an aesthetic, communicative and social agenda. That which at the dawn of artistic expression was practically unthinkable has now been transformed by artists like Xavier Carrillo into a medium that enables them to express their view of the world that surrounds them and their way of life. There is no doubt that the technological revolution has also defined the art world. The result is young artists like the one who has masterfully inundated these pages with a love of art and an

ability to combine photography and digital manipulation. As a result, what for many appears to be paintings are in actual fact photographs of the landscape that surrounds him, captured through his lens and refashioned with his creative digital expertise. It is a creative process that ends with the unique personalisation of each copy by applying varnish. The visual effect created by the combination of the varnish and the manipulation of the image make the photograph seem like a painting. By having complete command of his tools, this artist of our times is inspired by his very state of mind, allowing his creativity to dupe him. This enables Xavi to produce these incredible images in which he recreates urban landscapes that, he says, “one identifies with but in an expressive way, photographing everything and getting excited because I’m already creating the image in my mind; it’s extraordinary”.

Although he came into contact with the digital design world in 1999, in 2004 he made his big leap when he took part in a poster competition, through which he discovered that the type of photographs he created reached the visual heart of anyone who looked at them, inspiring him to exhibit his work. Since then this Valencian artist from Carcaixent has taken part in many exhibitions, given numerous talks and workshops and received distinguished awards and nominations in his home region. He is currently a member of the Valencian Association of Professional Photographers and the Spanish Federation of Professional Photographers. Xavi captures his conception of the world that surrounds him and manages to redirect the imagination to a real and yet almost fantastical scenario, where pictorial technique and illustration add a unique touch.

TESORILLO, SABINILLAS, SAN PEDRO DE ALCÁNTARA: HISTORIAS PARALELAS José Regueira Ramos - Cronista Oficial de Jimena

En principio, podr‡ parecer extra– o el paralelismo entre estas tres poblaciones. Sin embargo, como veremos, tienen una trayectoria similar por su origen, por su cronolog’ a y por sus actividades socio-econ— micas durante los muchos a– os de su corta existencia.

os tres pueblos fueron inicialmente colonias agrícolas, acogidas a las leyes de aprovechamiento de aguas y de creación de colonias de mediados del siglo XIX y las tres nacieron con pocos años de diferencia. Las tres tuvieron además como importante motivación inicial la extensión del cultivo de caña de azúcar hacia la parte más occidental de la costa malagueña e incluso de la más oriental de la de Cádiz, ya que sus promotores tenían experiencia de este cultivo e industrialización del mismo en la costa oriental de Málaga y en la costa granadina. De Tesorillo ya hemos hablado en otras ocasiones e incluso hemos comentado el magnífico libro que publicó Jerónimo Sánchez Blanco sobre su historia. Fue, junto con San Pablo, una de las colonias incluidas en la Sociedad Industrial y Agrícola del Guadiaro cuando se constituyó esta sociedad por la familia Larios en 1887. Esta familia fue la propietaria de las 17.000 Has. que constituían esta Sociedad en los términos de Jimena, San Roque, Los Barrios, Gaucín, Casares y Manilva hasta que el año 1930 se la vendieron a Juan March. Éste, a su vez, en los años cuarenta procedió a su parcelación y venta a numerosos propietarios que hoy siguen cultivando estas fértiles tierras, ahora dedicadas primordialmente al cultivo de cítricos. El origen de Sabillas está en la creación de la Colonia Agrícola de San Luis de Sabinillas por parte de la sociedad “Llamazares, Ortiz y Martínez” en el año 1873. En ella se construyó una fábrica de azúcar sobre una superficie de 56.000 metros cuadrados. La Sociedad propietaria atravesó serios problemas de liquidez, por lo que la fábrica y la colonia la vendieron a la familia Larios en 1878 y años más tarde fue incorporada a la SIAG, cuyas propiedades fueron, igual que las de Tesorillo, parceladas y vendidas en la década de los cuarenta del siglo pasado. Como se sabe, estas antiguas fincas de la

Colonia fueron, en manos de los nuevos propietarios, prósperas viñas hoy en acelerado proceso de desaparición en aras de una galopante construcción y especulación inmobiliaria. La Colonia Agrícola de San Pedro de Alcántara fue constituida por Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, Marqués del Duero, personaje importante de la época ya que fue presidente del Senado durante el reinado de Isabel II y ya con anterioridad Capitán General de Andalucía. En 1861 constituyó la Colonia Agrícola de San Pedro de Alcántara en terrenos de los términos municipales de Marbella, Benahavís y Estepona en las que se cultivaba caña de azúcar, cultivo que ya había realizado en sus tierras del Guadalhorce y que extendió hacia el oeste en esta Colonia de San Pedro. En el año 1871 construyó una fábrica de azúcar. En esta Colonia se estableció una Granja Modelo. Este gran proyecto innovador, modelo en su género, al que se incorporaron las técnicas y la maquinaria más avanzada de la época, sufrió fuertes problemas económicos, agravados con la inestabilidad política surgida en España a partir de l868, que obligaron al Marqués del Duero a vender en 1873 estas propiedades a sus principales acreedores, la sociedad formada por Joaquín de la Gándara y Luis de la Cuadra. Hacia la primera mitad del siglo XX el Trust Azucarero compró los dos ingenios existentes en el término de Marbella, subsistiendo el de San Pedro de Alcántara hasta 1920, en que también fue clausurado. La Sociedad Colonia de San Pedro de Alcántara fue absorbida de derecho por la Compañía General Azucarera de España en diciembre de 1944. Fue en la década de los veinte cuando se inició la parcelación y venta de las tierras de la Colonia creada por el Marqués del Duero. Las primeras fincas vendidas fueron las de Guadalmansa y del Rodeo-Pepita. En 1934 se vendió la Hacienda Guadalmina, con una extensión

de 340 Has., a Norberto Goizueta . A partir de 1939, a la terminación de la guerra civil, se aceleró el proceso de liquidación de la Colonia, vendiéndose las grandes parcelas del entorno del casco urbano. El fenómeno turístico de Marbella tuvo su inicio precisamente en los terrenos de la antigua Colonia de San Pedro de Alcántara. En 1943 Ricardo Soriano, marqués de Ivanrey, compró la finca El Rodeo, creando un original establecimiento hotelero al que llamó Venta y Albergues del Rodeo, después denominado Hotel Rodeo, que sería la primera urbanización de la comarca de Marbella, a la que ya habían precedido otras iniciativas turísticas en Torremolinos. El éxito de la experiencia de Ivanrey y el incremento del turismo en la zona llevaron en 1957 a Norberto Goizueta a parcelar con fines turísticos una parte de su finca Guadalmina, construyendo un campo de golf y el Golf-Hotel Guadalmina. A pesar de todo, todavía en 1960 San Pedro de Alcántara era una localidad predominantemente agrícola, que a partir de esa época empieza su transformación hasta convertirse en la próspera localidad turística que es hoy.■

At ﬁrst, drawing a parallel between these three towns might seem strange. However, as we will see, they have a similar background due to their origin, their chronology and their socioeconomic activities throughout much of their short lives.

he three towns were initially agricultural settlements, subject to the laws of water usage and the laws on the creation of settlements of the mid-19th Century, the three of them established within a few years of each other. All three were also initially motivated by the spread of sugarcane cultivation to the westernmost part of the Malaga province coast and all the way to the easternmost part of Cadiz, since their instigators had experience in this crop and its industrialisation on the eastern coast of Malaga and the coast of Granada. We have already discussed Tesorillo on another occasion and even mentioned the magnificent book published by Jerónimo Sánchez Blanco on its history. It was, alongside San Pablo, one of the settlements included in the Sociedad Industrial y Agrícola del Guadiaro (SIAG, the ‘Guadiaro Industrial and Agricultural Company’) when it was set up by the Larios family 1887. This family owned the 42,000 acres that made up the Sociedad in the Jimena, San Roque, Los Barrios, Gaucín, Casares and Manilva municipal areas, until the land was sold to Juan March in 1930. In turn, in the forties March partitioned and sold it to a large number of owners who continue to cultivate this fertile land to this

day, primarily for the production of citrus fruit. Sabinillas’ origin lies in the creation of the San Luis de Sabinillas Agricultural Settlement by the ‘Llamazares, Ortiz y Martínez’ company in 1873. A sugar factory was built on the site over a surface area of 56,000 square metres. The proprietary company had some severe liquidity problems, so the factory and the settlement were sold to the Larios family in 1878. Years later, it was incorporated into the SIAG, the properties of which, like those of Tesorillo, were partitioned and sold in the 1940s. As we know, these old plantations belonging to the settlement were, in the hands of the new owners, prosperous vineyards that are now quickly disappearing to make way for galloping real-estate development and speculation. The San Pedro de Alcántara Agricultural Settlement was built by Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, the Marquis of Duero, an important public figure of the time because he was President of the Senate during the reign of Isabella II and had been Captain General of Andalusia. In 1861 he established the San Pedro de Alcántara Agricultural Settlement on land in the Marbella, Benahavís and Estepona municipal areas, where he cultivated sugarcane. It was a crop he had already grown on his Guadalhorce estate which he extended west to this San Pedro Settlement. In 1871 he built a sugar factory and a ‘model farm’ was established at this settlement. This major innovative project, a showpiece facility incorporating the most advanced techniques and machinery of its time, experienced severe financial problems, exacerbated by the political instability emerging in Spain in 1868, forcing the Marquis of Duero to sell the properties to his main creditors, the partnership formed by Joaquín de la Gándara and Luis de la Cuadra, in 1873. In the first half of the 20th Century, the Trust Azucarero (the ‘Sugar Production Trust’) bought the two refineries in existence in the Marbella municipal area. The San Pedro de Alcántara refinery survived until 1920, when it was closed

down. The San Pedro de Alcántara Settlement was absorbed by the Compañía General Azucarera de España (the ‘General Sugar Production Company of Spain’) in December 1944. It was in the twenties that the land belonging to the settlement established by the Marquis of Duero was partitioned and sold. The first farms sold were those of Guadalmansa and Rodeo-Pepita. In 1934, Hacienda Guadalmina, spanning 840 acres, was sold to Norberto Goizueta. From 1939, following the Spanish Civil War, the liquidation of the settlement moved up a gear, with large plots in the area around the urban centre being sold.

In 1943, Ricardo Soriano, Marquis of Ivanrey, bought the El Rodeo estate, creating a hotel which he called Venta y Albergues del Rodeo, later known as Hotel Rodeo, which was the first development in the Marbella area after other tourism initiatives sprouted up in Torremolinos. The success of Ivanrey’s experience and the growth of tourism in the area led Norberto Goizueta to partition part of his Guadalmina estate for tourism purposes in 1957, building a golf course and the Golf-Hotel Guadalmina. Patricia Highsmith, “Extraños en un tren”. En esta ocasión Granger se enfrenta nuevamente a un héroe ambiguo y de difícil carácter y a pesar de la censura por la cual Hitchcock no puede ser fiel con plenitud a la historia original, la película obtiene el beneplácito del público y de la crítica. Durante la década de los 50 el actor rodaría por una sucesión de filmes de dudosa calidad que no terminaban por consagrarlo como un buen actor. A pesar de sus esfuerzos uniéndose al Actor´s Studio y desplazándose a Europa en busca de nuevas experiencias la suerte no estaba de su parte. Se dejó ver en dramas pasados de moda como “No quiero decirte adiós” y en comedietas musicales de poca trascendencia como “Pórtate bien” o “El fabuloso Andersen”. Pero igualmente llegó a participar en algunas obras afamadas de interés como “Cuatro páginas de la vida”, “Historia de tres amores” o “Senso”, de Luchino Visconti. La vida amorosa de Farley Granger fue tempestuosa. Su abierta bisexualidad, que luchó por no mantener oculta, quedó aclarada en sus memorias donde pudo contar dispares romances. A pesar de sus affaires con actrices como Ava Gardner o su matrimonio con Shelley Winters, Granger sostuvo siempre que era capaz de amar tanto a hombres como a mujeres. Finalmente la última etapa de su vida la vivió junto al productor Robert Calhoun. t was the 1940s, the Hollywood golden age, when amid a sea of heartthrobs with slicked down hair, a young Farley appeared in search of his opportunity in the universe of stars of the big screen. Somehow he managed to make a name for himself though the critics were never on his side, thanks to a look that broke hearts among the female population of the time and his parts in a pair of Hitchcock films that are among the director’s most highly praised.

he young Californian was born into a wealthy family. His father was the owner of a chain of car dealerships called Willys-Overland, but unfortunately they fell victim to the economic disaster of 1929. Like so many other organisations they were forced to close down and move away in search of a new life. They left the city of Los Angeles behind them and settled in a suburb of Hollywood where a young Farley started rubbing shoulders with people working as extras in the show-business world. Fleeing his parents’ alcoholism and his family’s financial woes, Farley elbowed his way onto the stage in the hope that a stroke of luck would make his dreams of success come true, his sights set with brilliance and courage on the silver screen. After being discovered by a talent scout employed by Samuel Goldwyn, he made his debut on the big screen with two titles telling stories of wartime exploits: The North Star and The Purple Heart. Fictitious conflicts aside, the Second World War was underway and the fledgling actor decided to enlist in his country’s armed forces in order to fight. Sent to the Pacific, he suffered from fragile health, but it proved a great opportunity to meet many colleagues in his trade. After the war Granger resumed his own struggle and he was fortunate enough to land the starring role in They Live by Night, director Nicholas Ray’s debut feature film. This low-budget melodrama positioned him in the eye of the hurricane. Without doubt, the B-movies helped to promote a young actor whose limited talent would be employed by directors in certain films. This, combined with powerful photogenic qualities and a

masculine, elegant and yet ambiguous demeanour, would prove to be the perfect recipe for bringing to life psychologically complex heartthrobs. It was these attributes that led Alfred Hitchcock to enlist him as the protagonist in his prodigious experimental film, The Rope, alongside John Dall and James Stewart. The scriptwriter Arthur Laurents came up with a story with clearly homosexual characters, but with the Hays Code in force, any connotations that would give rise to scandal had to be concealed due to the restrictions of the time. Meanwhile, behind the scenes and hidden from the world, scriptwriter and actor had a love affair that would last years. After Edge of Doom and Our Very Own, melodramas that received poor reviews but were very popular among the discerning public, he once again had the opportunity to work with Hitchcock, who had decided to take Patricia Highsmith’s novel Strangers on a Train to the big screen. On this occasion, Granger once again played an ambiguous hero and difficult character and despite the censorship that prevented Hitchcock from faithfully representing the original story, the film received the blessing of the public and the critics. In the 50s the actor shot a succession of films of dubious quality which did not exactly help his reputation as a good actor. Despite his efforts in joining the Actor’s Studio and travelling to Europe in search of new experiences, luck was not on his side. He appeared in unfashionable dramas like I Want You and in musical comedies of little impact like Behave Yourself! and Hans Christian Andersen, but also managed to secure parts in

El sonido del atún La llegada de los primeros atunes se celebra en Zahara, casi, como una ﬁesta. De boca en boca el pueblo transmite la buena nueva: hubo suerte en la almadraba y habrá ronqueo. Presenciar cómo, en unos minutos, se despieza un atún de cientos de kilos como el que limpia un boquerón es un espectáculo digno de contemplar. Además de un arte milenario que deja claro que ésta es la tierra de los túnidos.

l sonido del cuchillo al despiezar el atún es tan especial, tan intenso, que, de él, viene el nombre del ronqueo. Muchos dicen que quien lo escucha nunca lo olvida, al igual que indican que pasa al probar el morrillo o saborear la parpatana. El ronqueo es, de esta forma, la técnica artesanal utilizada para descuartizar al atún y sacarle el máximo provecho. No es, sin embargo, una tarea sencilla. Aunque es cierto que al presenciarla lo parece, por la maestría con la que los ronqueadores la desempeñan, desarmando atunes de hasta trescientos kilos en tan sólo unos minutos.

El ronqueo es la técnica artesanal utilizada para descuartizar al atún y sacarle el máximo provecho. En Zahara existen verdaderos maestros de este arte milenario, transmitido de padres a hijos como una valiosa herencia. Y es que los ronqueadores son una pieza clave de la cultura zahareña, pues su labor es crucial para poder disfrutar del ‘cerdo del mar’ como se merece. El ronqueador conoce al milímetro cada parte de este animal. Su trabajo es tan delicado que requiere mimo, pero también precisión, fuerza y la valentía propia del que sabe lo que hace. El trabajo empieza por la cabeza, lugar donde aguardan los grandes manjares del atún, como el el mormo y contramormo, piezas situadas bajo la frente y antes del cuello y muy parecidas al solomillo; el morrillo, muy apreciado por su grasa, la parpatana, que rodea a la boca, o la facera, membrana gelatinosa cercana a los ojos. Tras la cabeza, es el turno de las huevas, que se sacan con un corte limpio en la barriga al que siguen otros cuantos tajos que dejan la pieza dividida en cuatro. Quedan entonces por extraer las partes nobles, conformadas por el tarantelo (que es el triángulo que se sitúa antes de la barriga, muy cerca de la cola), el solomillo, el lomo y la cola, la espineta o ventrecha. Además del descargamento y el descargado, de los que se obtiene la famosa mojama de atún. Con el trabajo bien hecho, marineros y comerciantes reparten el botín para que llegue a la mesa cuanto antes y haga disfrutar a los que lo degusten de un gran festival de sabores tras el que se esconde un trabajo milenario que ha colocado a Zahara en el mapa del buen yantar.

The arrival of the first tuna fish is celebrated in Zahara almost as a festival. The news travels from mouth to mouth around the town: the almedraba (as the local trap-net fishing method is called) has been successful and it’s time for the ronqueo, the butchering of the tuna. The carving of a tuna fish weighing hundreds of kilos in just a few minutes, as though it were no bigger than an anchovy, is a spectacle that is well worth seeing. It is also an ancient art that sends a clear signal that this is the land of the tuna fish.

he sound of the knife as it cuts the tuna is so special, so intense, that it gives its name to the ronqueo, which means the ‘snoring’. Many say that whoever hears it will never forget the sound, just like they will never forget the taste of the morrillo or parpatana cuts. The ronqueo is the traditional technique used to butcher the tuna and get the most of the fish. Although it is

by no means a simple task, it is made to look easy owing to the skill with which the ronqueadores carve the tuna, butchering fish of up to 300 kilos in just a few minutes. In Zahara there are some true masters of this ancient art, which is transmitted from father to son as a valuable legacy. The ronquedores are a key part of Zahara’s culture, since their work is vital in ensuring the ‘pig of the sea’ is enjoyed as it should be.

The ronqueo is the traditional techique used to butcher the tuna and get the most of the fish The ronqueador knows each part of this fish to the millimetre. His work is so delicate that it requires great care, but also accuracy, strength and the confidence of a person who knows what he is doing. The work begins at the head, where the tuna offers some exquisite delicacies like the mormo and contramormo, cuts located under the forehead and before the neck and very similar to the upper loin; the morrillo, highly prized for its fat; the parpatana, which surrounds the mouth; or the facera, a gelatinous membrane near the eyes. After the head, the roe is removed with a clean cut to the stomach, followed by a few more slices that leave the fish in four. Next the ‘noble’ cuts are removed, comprising the tarantelo (the triangle located before the belly, very close to the tail), the upper loin, the loin and tail, the espineta (just before the tail) and the ventrecha (the central belly). And then there’s the descargamento and descargado, from which the famous mojama or dried salted tuna fish is obtained. With the job well done, fishermen and traders share the spoils so that it can get to the table as soon as possible, to the delight of anyone who samples this feast of flavours, behind which lies an ancient tradition that has put Zahara on the culinary map.

RECETA PARA GYOZA (4 RACIONES) 1 kg. de rabo de toro. 1 cebolla. 1 zanahoria. 2 dientes de ajo. 2 litros de vino tinto. Tomillo. Laurel. Pimentón dulce. 2 frutos de anís estrellado. 2 clavos. 250 gr. de foie gras de pato . Cebolleta. 1 paquete de masa de gyoza. Clara de huevo. 100 gr. de sésamo tostado. 50 gr. de trufas de verano. Aceite de trufa. 100 ml. de goma de shabu (salsa de sésamo).

Dumplings japoneses cocinados de dos formas: al vapor y fritos en sartén. Rellenos con guiso de rabo de toro, foie gras de pato y cebolleta.Servidos con salsa de sésamo tostado y virutas de trufa. Realice pequeñas muescas superficiales en el rabo de toro y marque ambos lados en una sartén. Corte en dados todas las verduras y añádalas a la sartén. Añada las especias, sal y el vino tinto. Deje que reduzca. Cubra la sartén con una lámina de papel de cera y coloque la tapa encima. Déjelo cocinar cubierto durante tres horas a 160 ºC. Una vez que se cocine hasta que esté tierno, deje que se enfríe en la misma sartén. Deshuese el rabo de toro separando la carne del hueso. Deseche los huesos y el exceso de grasa. Corte el foie gras en cubos de 0,5 x 0,5 cm., y añádalo al rabo de toro. Añada a la mezcla la cebolleta cortada muy fina. Use un robot de cocina para licuar la mezcla de carne hasta obtener una textura suave. Coloque una cucharadita de la mezcla en el centro de cada lámina de gyoza. Glasee los bordes de cada gyoza con un poco de clara de huevo y séllelas en forma de media luna. Caliente dos cucharaditas de aceite vegetal en una sartén. Fría cada gyoza hasta que se dore por un lado. En la misma sartén, añada unas gotas de agua e, inmediatamente, coloque la tapadera encima. Cuando el agua se haya evaporado y la gyoza se haya cocinado al vapor durante 1 minuto, quite la tapadera de la sartén. Sirva con salsa de sésamo y virutas de trufa. Se toma mejor en caliente.

RECIPE GYOZA (SERVES 4 PERSONS) 1 kg. ox tail. 1 onion. 1 carrot. 2 garlic cloves. 2 L. red wine. Thyme. Bay Leaf. Paprika. 2 star anis. 2 cloves. 250 g. duck foie gras. Spring onion. 1 pkt. Gyoza dough. Egg white. 100 g. toasted sesame. 50 g. summer truffle. Truffle oil. 100 ml. goma de shabu (sesame sauce).

Make small superficial scores on the ox tail and sear both sides in a saucepan. Dice all of the vegetables and add to the saucepan. Add the spices, sal and red wine. Let reduce. Cover the pan with a sheet of wax paper and place the lid on top. Cook covered for 3 hours at 160ºC. Once cooked until tender, let it cool in the same saucepan. De-bone the ox tail, seperating the meat from the bone. Discard the bones and excess fat. Dice the foie gras into cubes of 0.5 x 0.5cm and add to the ox tail. Add finely chopped spring onion into the mixture. Using a food processor, blend the meat mixture to a smooth consistancy. Place a teaspoon size amount of the mixture in the center of each gyoza sheet. Glaze the edges of each gyoza with a tiny bit of egg white and seal shut into a half moon shape. Heat two teaspoons of vegetable oil in a saucepan. Fry each gyoza until golden Brown on one side. In the same saucepan, add a few drops of water and immediately place the lid on top. Once the water is vaporized and the gyoza is steamed for 1 minute, remove the lid from the pan. Serve with sesame sauce and truffle shavings. Best when served hot.

Esta sustancia es la encargada de proporcionar el color rojizo o anaranjado a los alimentos como frutas y verduras, con lo cual lo correcto sería aumentar el consumo de estos alimentos en esta época para que el cuerpo pueda empezar a asimilarlos y cuando llegue el tiempo de tomar el sol nuestro organismo esté preparado para ayudarnos con este tipo de protección. LOS ALIMENTOS RICOS EN CAROTENOS SON: Zanahoria Espinaca Calabaza Tomate Espárrago Berro Borraja Pimientos Frutos rojos Los carotenos activan la producción de la melanina, con lo cual aumentarán el bronceado. Los carotenos tienen grandes virtudes dietéticas y a la vez protegen la piel de la influencia negativa del sol, pero no sustituyen a las cremas con protección solar. Lo que hacen es mantener la piel hidratada y proporcionan un tono bronceado. Y es que además se ha descubierto que es un importante antioxidante que nos protege de los radicales libres y puede prevenir enfermedades.

Los carotenoides más conocidos son el betacaroteno, el licopeno, la luteína y la zeaxantina. El betacaroteno tiene un beneficio añadido a sus propiedades antioxidantes ya que es un precursor de la vitamina A, por lo que al consumirlo estamos favoreciendo la producción de esta vitamina. La luteína y zeaxantina, muy abundantes en la yema de huevo, maíz, naranjas y mango, se ha demostrado que, al encontrarse conjuntamente en el ojo, lo protegen contra los rayos solares y actúan previniendo enfermedades como las cataratas. El licopeno, de todos los carotenoides comunes, es el antioxidante más eficiente frente al daño celular, tanto ocular como de la piel. Este es el responsable del color rojo del tomate, tiene propiedades similares a las de los betacarotenos de las zanahorias y se ha comprobado que tiene propiedades anti cancerígenas y al mismo tiempo ayuda a la reducción del colesterol en sangre. This substance is responsible for adding the reddish or orangey colour to fruit and vegetables, so it would be right to increase intake of these foods at this time of year so that the body can start to assimilate the carotene and, when it is time to sunbathe, the organism will be better prepared to protect itself. THE CAROTENE-RICH FOODS ARE: Carrot Spinach Pumpkin Tomato Asparagus Watercress Borage Peppers Red fruit Carotenes activate melanin production, which enhances tanning. Carotenes have excellent nutritional properties and also protect the skin from the negative effects of the sun, but they do not replace sun creams. They keep the skin hydrated and provide a bronze tone. It has also been shown that carotene is an excellent antioxidant, which protects us from free radicals and can prevent illness. The best-known carotenoids are beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin: Beta-carotene has an added benefit to its antioxidant properties because it is a precursor of vitamin A, so when consumed it favours production of this vitamin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are abundant in egg yolk, corn, oranges and mango. It has been shown that when found together in the

It has been shown to have anticarcinogenic properties and it also helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Remember that it is important to maintain as complete and as varied a diet as possible at all times, without over-eating any particular type of food, because this can also have negative effects on the body; so always eat the correct quantities of each kind of food.■

Finca Cortes’ n fue el escenario perfecto para lidiar un espect‡ culo de la talla del Volvo Mundial Match Play. El campo casareño recibió a los 24 mejores golfistas del mundo y los hizo sudar, sufrir y luchar por cada victoria sobre un recorrido que no defraudó. Tras mucho nivel de juego, el triunfo fue para Ian Poulter, que derrotó a Luke Donald en la final por 2 & 1, dejando a su compatriota sin alcanzar la gloria del número uno del mundo. Álvaro Quirós hizo soñar al público, pero en cuartos de final cayó contra Martin Kaimer, dejando a España sin representación.

l campo de Finca Cortesín se convirtió en el epicentro del golf mundial, del 19 al 22 de mayo, con la celebración del Volvo Mundial Match Play. Una cita ineludible para los amantes del golf, que no quisieron perderse a los 24 mejores del mundo sobre el césped casareño. Tras varias jornadas de emoción, la final la disputaron dos ingleses: Ian Poulter y Luke Donald. Aparte del premio, 800.000 euros

para el vencedor, en Cortesín se jugaba también por el puesto de número uno del mundo, aunque no pudo ser. Los dos golfistas protagonizaron una reñida final en la que Donald no estuvo fino con el putt, con el que perdió golpes cruciales. Poulter había prometido a su hijo dar el 100% para regalarle el título de campeón por su séptimo cumpleaños y así lo hizo, obteniendo la victoria por 2&1 en el hoyo 17 y dejando a su compatriota a un paso del trono mundial.

Siendo ya ganador, Ian Poulter no dudo en recordar a su ídolo, Severiano Ballesteros: “Ganar un título que Seve logró cinco veces hace que esta victoria sea todavía más especial. Seve inspiró a mi generación; siendo niño, yo siempre iba a verle a Wentworth y le seguía en la Ryder Cup, podía pasar horas y horas viéndole dar bolas en el campo de prácticas. Tuve la suerte de conocerle y jugar un par de veces con él, yo era un grandísimo fan de Seve, tenía un carisma que será difícil igualar”, explicó el jugador.

The Casares resort welcomed the top 24 golfers in the world and made them sweat blood for every victory on a course that did not disappoint. Following plenty of excellent play, victory went to Ian Poulter, who defeated Luke Donald in the ﬁnal by 2&1, denying his compatriot the glory of the world number one spot. Álvaro Quirós gave the crowds something to cheer about, but in the quarter-ﬁnal he fell against Martin Kaimer, leaving Spain without a representative.

Following several thrilling days of golf, the final brought two Englishmen face to face: Ian Poulter and Luke Donald. However, Álvaro Quirós’s Volvo World Match Play dream came to an end after he lost in the quarterfinals to his friend Martin Kaymer by two strokes. The youngster almost made it into the semifinals and, although it wasn’t to be, he and Kraymer put on one of the most

Gracias a una regularidad pasmosa - hasta el mes de junio hab’ a acumulado 15 top tens en los œ ltimos 17 torneos disputados - Luke Donald (Hemel Hempstead, Inglaterra 1977) ha conquistado el nœ mero uno del ranking mundial. Sin estruendos, este joven inglŽ s, de car‡ cter tranquilo y soberbio juego corto, se ha puesto al mando del selecto grupo de europeos que ha terminado con la supremac’ a del golf americano, algo impensable hasta hace bien poco.

onald se enamoró del golf en España, donde aprendió a jugar en sus veraneos de niño. La familia y la pintura son junto al golf sus grandes pasiones, y de todas ellas habló con La Revista de Sotogrande durante el Volvo Mundial Match Play, celebrado recientemente en el espectacular recorrido de Finca Cortesín. Terminaste los estudios de Arte justo al hacerte profesional de golf, ¿cómo has podido compatibilizar las dos cosas? Siendo uno de los mejores, ¿te queda tiempo para la pintura? La verdad es que últimamente no mucho, sobre todo desde que nació mi hija que tiene quince meses. Entre ella y el entrenamiento, no me queda demasiado tiempo, pero estoy deseando pintar, es algo que me gusta mucho y que retomaré en cuanto pueda. ¿Qué tipo de pintura haces? Pinto óleos de temas deportivos aunque son cuadros muy, muy abstractos. Son muy coloridos, me gusta dar muchas pinceladas, muchos trazos. ¿Crees que la pintura te ha ayudado a ser mejor jugador? ¿Hay algo de esta afición que puedas aplicar en el campo de golf? Sí, creo que pintar me ha ayudado. La pintura te hace desarrollar la percep-

ción visual, y eso es importante para un jugador porque te ayuda a visualizar los golpes. También te hace más creativo y todo eso es bueno si lo aprovechas en el campo. ¿Cuáles son tus pintores favoritos? Siempre me ha gustado Monet, es mi pintor favorito, me gusta cómo trabajaba, él daba muchas pinceladas pero a la vez, sus cuadros tienen una gran sencillez. ¿Qué jugadores consideras más artistas en el campo de golf? Uno de ellos sería Corey Pavin, quizá no pegue muy fuerte, pero es creativo. También Bubba Watson porque sabe mover muy bien la bola. ¿No crees que el golf se ha convertido en un deporte muy mecánico, que quizá antes era más artístico? Sí puede ser, probablemente ahora tenemos mucha tecnología, vídeos, etc, y se deja menos margen a la imaginación. Creo que lo ideal sería mezclar un poco más las dos cosas, tecnología y creatividad. ¿Alguna vez te planteaste dedicarte profesionalmente a la pintura? No, la verdad es que nunca me planteé dedicarme a pintar. Es sólo un hobby que me divierte pero desde muy pequeño tuve claro que mi máxima prioridad era el golf.

¿Te gusta coleccionar obras de arte? No, no en el sentido de invertir en obras de arte o de hacer una colección. Me encanta ir a galerías cuando estoy en Chicago y comprar obras que me gustan, pero no busco artistas conocidos, sólo cosas que me gusta tener en casa. ¿Te gusta venir a Sotogrande? ¿Qué te parece esta zona? Me gusta mucho, hay buenos campos, buen clima y me encanta el jamón. Además, tengo muy buenos recuerdos de mis veraneos en La Manga cuando era niño, allí me enganche al golf. Solía ir a jugar con mi padre y mi hermano a un campo de pares tres. Sólo llevaba tres palos y jugaba 54 ó 56 hoyos todos los días, probablemente de ahí viene mi juego corto. En los últimos meses has mostrado una regularidad increíble, ¿qué ha cambiado en tu juego para conseguirlo? Creo que siempre he tenido un gran juego corto pero hasta ahora, mi juego largo no era todo lo bueno que debería. He trabajado mucho para mejorar este aspecto y se han visto los resultados. En los últimos seis u ocho meses he sido muy consistente con los hierros largos y he mejorado mucho mis estadísticas de calles cogidas y greenes en regulación. ¿Cómo has logrado esa mejoría? Entre otras cosas, he hecho mucho entrenamiento físico para ganar fuerza y para tener más velocidad en el swing. Entreno al menos cuatro o cinco veces en

semana si estoy compitiendo y casi todos los días si no estoy en un torneo. ¿Cuál es el secreto de tu juego corto? Tengo muy buena base, y siempre vuelvo a ella, a los fundamentos. Creo que lo más importante del juego corto, y sobre todo, del putt es una buena colocación y, por supuesto, le dedico mucho trabajo. ¿Cuánto tiempo en comparación con el juego largo? El doble. Si doy bolas durante una hora, dedico dos al juego corto. ¿Qué te parece la supremacía actual del golf europeo sobre el norteamericano? El ranking mundial ha cambiado por completo y es muy divertido que podamos luchar por el número uno. Obviamente, los problemas que ha tenido Tiger nos han dado la opción de pelear por el número uno. Creo que Europa está viviendo un gran momento, similar al que se produjo a principios de los años 90 con Seve, Faldo, Woosnam, Olazábal, etc. Creo que Inglaterra puede estar orgullosa con dos ingleses en lo más alto. ●

Luke Donald, world number one. An artist at the top of golf Thanks to his remarkable consistency (up to June he accumulated 15 top-10s in the last 17 tournaments held), Luke Donald (born in Hemel Hempstead, England, in 1997), has climbed to number one in the world ranking. Quietly, this young Englishman, with his cool character and superb short play, has taken the lead among the select group of Europeans who have put an end to the supremacy of American golf, an unthinkable feat until very recently.

onald fell in love with golf in Spain, where he learned to play on his summer holidays as a child. His family and painting are, alongside golf, his great passions, and he spoke about all three to The Sotogrande Magazine during the Volvo World Match Play, held recently at the spectacular Finca Cortesín course. You finished your art studies just as you became a professional golfer; how have you been able to combine the two things? As number two in the world, do you have any time left to paint? To be honest not much lately, particularly since my fifteen-month-old daughter was born. Between her and my training, I don’t have much spare time, but I’m keen to get painting; it’s something I like a lot and that I’ll start doing again as soon as I can. What kind of painting do you do? I paint oil paintings with sport subjects, although they’re very, very abstract pieces. They’re really colourful, I like painting with a lot of brushstrokes. Do you think painting has helped you to be a better player? Is there something from this interest that you take onto the golf course? Yes, I think painting has helped me. Painting makes you develop your visual percep-

tion, and this is important for a player because it helps you visualise shots. It also makes you more creative and all of this is good if you take advantage of it on the course. Who are your favourite painters? I’ve always liked Monet, he’s my favourite painter; I like how he works, he painted with a lot of brushstrokes but at the same time his paintings have great simplicity.

What players do you consider to be the most artistic on the golf course? One of them would be Corey Pavin; he might not hit the ball very hard, but he’s creative. And Bubba Watson, because he knows how to move the ball really well. Do you think golf has become a very mechanical sport, that perhaps it used be more artistic? Maybe. Now we probably have more tech-

nology, videos etc. and there’s less room for the imagination. I think the ideal thing to do is mix the two together, technology and creativity. Have you ever considered becoming a professional painter? No, to be honest I have never considered becoming a fulltime artist. It’s just a hobby that I enjoy, but from a very young age I have known that my main priority was golf. Do you like collecting works of art? No, not in the sense of investing in artwork or building a collection. I love going to galleries when I’m in Chicago and buying pieces I like, but I don’t look for well-known artists, just things I like having at home. Competing all over the world gives you a chance to visit all the best galleries; do you take the opportunity? No, it’s a shame but when I travel to tournaments I have to practise and I don’t have much time. The one I like most is Chicago. You were saying that since your daughter was born you haven’t had much time for your other interests; in what other ways has being a father changed your life? My life has changed a lot; my daughter has given me a new perspective on life, made me more mature, and I love seeing how she learns something new every day, it’s something that inspires me a lot.

You have always said that your family has been a very positive influence in your life and now you have your own; is it your biggest challenge yet? Of course, it’s a big responsibility and a big challenge. I think I had a good upbringing and that’s what I want to pass on to my own family. Do you like coming to Sotogrande? What do you think about the area? I like it a lot; there are good courses, good weather and I love the jamón. I also have good memories of my summer holidays at La Manga when I was a boy; that’s where I got hooked on golf. I would play with my father and brother on a pitch-and-putt course. I only had three clubs and I played 54 or 56 holes every day, which is probably where I get my short game from. Over the last few months you have demonstrated incredible consistency;

what has changed in your game in order to achieve this? I think I have always had a good short game, but until now my long game hasn’t been as good as it should have been. I have worked long and hard to improve this area and the results are there to see. Over the last six or eight months I’ve been very consistent with the long irons and I’ve improved my stats on narrow fairways and regulation greens. How have you achieved this improvement? Among other things, I’ve done a lot of physical training to improve my strength and speed up my swing. I train at least four or five times a week if I’m competing and almost every day if I’m not playing in a tournament. What is the secret to your short game? I have a very good base, and I always return to it, to the basics. I think the most important

thing about the short game, and putting in particular, is good placement, and of course I work hard on it. How much time do you spend on it compared to your long game? Double. For every hour I spend hitting long balls, I spend two on my short game. What do you think about the current supremacy of European golf over the US? The world ranking has changed completely and it’s great that we can fight for the number one spot. Obviously, the problems that Tiger has had have given us a chance to do so. I think it’s a great time for Europe, similar to the period in the early 90s with Seve, Faldo, Woodnam, Olazábal etc. I think England can be proud to have two Englishman at the top. ●

nalizando las características del juego del golf, el tiempo de esfuerzo, intensidad media, tipo de trabajo muscular, etc., podemos decir que el tipo de resistencia predominante es dinámica, general y aeróbica. Aunque podamos decir que el nivel de rendimiento que alcance un jugador de golf no depende de forma tan clara de la resistencia como otros deportes más físicos (como por ejemplo ciclismo, remo, natación, carrera, etc.), sí, debemos dejar claro que es un condicionante necesario para la práctica deportiva. La capacidad aeróbica de un deportista se suele medir valorando el consumo máximo de oxigeno (VO2 máx.). El VO2 máx., representa la capacidad máxima de oxigeno que el organismo es capaz de consumir por unidad de tiempo y es el criterio universalmente aceptado para medir la resistencia general. (Ver cuadro 1).

Cuando hablamos de la resistencia nos referimos a esa capacidad f’sica responsable de mantener un trabajo determinado durante el mayor tiempo posible. Podemos diferenciar una resistencia est‡ tica o din‡ mica en funci— n del tipo de movimiento realizado; resistencia local o general en funci— n de los grupos musculares que intervienen en el movimiento, y resistencia aer— bica o anaer— bica en funci— n de la intensidad del ejercicio realizado.

A) EFECTOS DEL ENTRENAMIENTO DE RESISTENCIA

Un mayor nivel de resistencia aeróbica provocará los siguientes efectos positivos:

•

Mejora del estado de salud general del deportista. El trabajo cardiovascular a intensidad baja y moderada (60 al 85% de la FCMax.) provoca innumerables efectos positivos para la salud del deportista: o Mejora de la función cardiaca. Reducción del riesgo de arritmias. o Efecto favorable sobre la coagulación sanguínea. o Mejora de la circulación periférica (aumento del numero de capilares por fibra muscular, aumento del calibre de los vasos sanguíneos, mejora de la rigidez arterial, etc.). o Disminución de los niveles de tensión arterial. o Mejora del funcionamiento del sistema inmunológico. o Mejora del metabolismo de los ácidos grasos. Esto conlleva un mayor control sobre los niveles de colesterol, triglicéridos, etc., y sobre el porcentaje graso corporal. Nos ayuda a mantenernos dentro un peso corporal correcto. o Mejora de la sensibilidad a la insulina.

•

Mejora de la capacidad de recuperación de un ejercicio a otro, dentro de la misma sesión de entrenamiento. Esto provoca una mejora de la asimilación de grandes volúmenes de trabajo técnico o físico, así como el aumento de la intensidad relativa de los ejercicios.

•

Mejora de la capacidad de recuperación entre sesiones o microciclos de entrenamiento. Esto nos permite aumentar el volumen o intensidad de trabajo con menores riesgos de sobrecargas, lesiones o sobreentrenamiento.

•

Una mejor capacidad aeróbica provoca una disminución de la fatiga, sobre todo en la última parte del recorrido de un campo. Un jugador más “fresco” mantiene fácilmente una técnica de juego correcta, una mejor concentración, piensa con más claridad y eso le permite rendir mejor.

•

Mejora del nivel de recuperación general del deportista. Recordemos que, a ciertos niveles, el golf es un deporte que exige numerosos y continuos viajes, muchas horas de desplazamientos en avión, tren o coche, cambios de residencia, jet lag, etc., Todos estos factores influyen notablemente en el estado físico del deportista, afectando a su rutina de descanso y aumentando la percepción de estrés. Unos mayores niveles de resistencia cardiorrespiratoria facilita esa capacidad de recuperación, amortiguando positivamente los efectos negativos de ese estrés.

•

Algunos estudios han demostrado que existe una relación directa entre el nivel de grasa corporal de un jugador y su nivel de rendimiento. Una disminución de la grasa abdominal está relacionada con una mejora de la movilidad de la cadera, lo cual se traduce en un aumento de la velocidad del swing. ENDURANCE TRAINING

When we talk about endurance, we are referring to a personÕ s physical ability to maintain effort for as long as possible. We can differentiate between static and dynamic endurance depending on the type of movement made, local or general endurance depending on the muscle groups involved in the movement, and aerobic or anaerobic endurance depending on the intensity of the exercise.

ssessing the characteristics of golf - the time it takes to play, medium intensity, the type of muscle work etc. - we could say that the type of endurance required is predominantly dynamic, general and aerobic. Although it could be said that the level of performance achieved by a golfer does not depend on endurance as much as in other more physical sports (like cycling, rowing, swimming, running etc), we should be clear on the fact that it is a necessary attribute for playing the sport. The aerobic capacity of a sportsperson is normally measured by assessing maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max). VO2 max represents the maximum amount of oxygen that the body is able to consume in a given time and it is the universally accepted criteria used to measure general endurance.

A) THE EFFECTS OF ENDURANCE TRAINING

Improves the general health of the sportsperson. Low- and moderate-intensity cardiovascular training (60 to 85 % of maximum heart rate) provides countless positive effects for a sportsperson’s health: o Improves cardiac function. Reduces risk of irregular heartbeat. o Favourable effect on blood clotting. o Improves peripheral circulation (increasing the number of capillaries per muscle fibre, increasing the calibre of blood vessels, improving arterial rigidity and more). o Reduces blood pressure levels. o Improves performance of immune system. o Improves metabolism of fatty acids. This provides better control of cholesterol, triglyceride levels etc. and the body fat percentage. Helps to maintain correct body weight. o Improves sensitivity to insulin. Improves ability to recover between exercises within the same training session. This enables better assimilation of large volumes of technical or physical work, as well as an increase in the relative intensity of exercises. Improves ability to recover between training sessions or microcycles. This enables you to increase the volume or intensity of training with a lower risk of overstraining, injury or over-training. Better aerobic capacity reduces fatigue, particularly over the final holes on the golf course. A ‘fresher’ player maintains good playing technique and better concentration more easily, allowing him to think more clearly and therefore perform better. Improves the general recovery of the sportsperson. Remember that, at certain levels, golf is a sport that requires frequent and continuous travel, many hours travelling by aeroplane, train or car, changes of residence, jet lag etc. All of these factors have a notable influence on the physical state of sportspeople, affecting their resting routine and increasing stress levels. Higher cardiorespiratory endurance levels facilitate this ability to recover and mitigate the negative effects of this stress. Some studies have shown that there is a direct relationship between a player’s body fat ratio and performance. Reduced abdominal fat is associated with improved hip mobility, which translates into an increase in swing speed. A minimum volume of aerobic capacity training will help you to keep this abdominal fat under control.●

Alcaidesa Heathland Golf Club El segundo campo de Alcaidesa es el de más reciente construcción de la zona. Sus 18 hoyos se reparten en más de seis mil metros y ofrecen al golfista mayor dificultad que el primero gracias a sus lagos y bunkers.

It was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark in 1992 and offers natural conditions which have made it a fashionable venue in recent years. Its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and the northern mountain

FRANCIA SE QUEDA CON LA RYDER CUP 2018 Francia ha sido la elegida por la Ryder Cup Europe para organizar y celebrar la Ryder Cup 2018, sobre las candidaturas de España, Alemania, Portugal y Holanda. Tras conocer la decisión, Gonzaga Escauriaza, presidente de la Real Federación Española de Golf, declaró: “Estamos convencidos de que Madrid hubiese sido una magnífica sede para albergar la Ryder Cup en 2018, pero desafortunadamente nuestro deseo no se ha hecho realidad". "Creo honestamente que nuestra candidatura era excelente y estamos orgullosos del trabajo realizado por todas las partes involucradas". "Felicitaciones a Francia por la designación". "Estoy convencido de que harán un fantástico trabajo".

Y es que, aunque amaneció lloviendo, el cielo dio una tregua a los jugadores, que pudieron salir a jugar. El resultado del juego de los 102 participantes hizo que se clasificaran en primera categoría Sergio Galiano, con 41 puntos, y en segunda Antonio Morito, con 46 puntos. Al finalizar la competición, todos compartieron una comida previa a la entrega de premios. ●
