LA CELEBRACIÓN DE LA RYDER CUP, EN VALDERRAMA, EN 1997, FUE ALGO LEGENDARIO. DÍAS EN LOS QUE EL MUNDO ENTERO POSÓ SU MIRADA SOBRE SOTOGRANDE PARA VER CÓMO AQUEL EQUIPO EUROPEO CAPITANEADO POR SEVERIANO BALLESTEROS SE ALZABA VICTORIOSO. unque su familia era de origen boliviano, Ortiz-Patiño siempre destacó sus raíces europeas. “Mi abuelo era conocido en Bolivia como el rey del estaño, pero yo nací en París y fui siempre más europeo que boliviano”, explicaba en una de las entrevistas concedidas a este medio. “La primera vez que pisé suelo sudamericano, en Buenos Aires, tenía 15 años y hasta los 17 no fui a Bolivia. Toda mi juventud, hasta la Guerra del 39, la pasé en Francia”, añadía sobre su infancia. Durante su juventud, Jaime OrtizPatiño se dedicó a disfrutar de la vida, jugando al tenis o corriendo en carreras de coches. Pero, al cumplir los 28 años pisó el freno y comenzó a trabajar en los negocios familiares. Una labor, que se acrecentó siete años más tarde, cuando su padre murió y pasó a ocupar su lugar en los Consejos de Administración del grupo Patiño. En 1982 decidió retirarse y vender sus minas en Brasil, Malaysia, Nigeria, Nueva Caledonia, Australia, Estados Unidos, Canadá y España (Río Tinto). Para entonces, ya conocía Sotogrande, donde se había refugiado en el 67 a raíz de su divorcio. “Fue en la Semana Santa del 67. Me había divorciado y quería descansar. “Le pedí a mi tío, que jugaba al golf, que me recomendara un lugar en el sur de España y me habló de Sotogrande. Me dijo que era muy bonito, pero que me aburriría, porque no había nada. Efectivamente, cuando llegué a Sotogrande sólo había 11 casas, incluso podría decir los nombres de cada propietario, pero me gustó mucho”, re-

cordaba Patiño para La Revista de Sotogrande. La oportunidad de adquirir Valderrama (entonces denominado Las Aves) surgió cuando tenía 55 años. Compró primero el 50% y, unos años después, completó la operación al adquirir la totalidad de este club de golf, con la intención de transformarlo en el mejor campo del mundo. Para ello, contó con la ayuda del prestigioso diseñador Robert Trent Jones. De aquello, nació uno de los mejores campos de golf del planeta: Valderrama. La historia no había hecho más que empezar. Aunque, sin duda, el capítulo más reseñable fue el de cómo este hombre puso alma, corazón y vida para situar a Sotogrande en el mapa mundial del golf con la celebración en Valderrama de la Ryder Cup. El camino para lograrlo fue duro. El Tour Europeo dio la negativa directa; Severiano Ballesteros lo quería para Madrid... Nadie creía que Patiño lo conseguiría. Sin embargo, en mayo de 1994, el Comité de la Ryder Cup sometió a votación la elección del campo y los seis votos fueron para Valderrama: “Nos lo llevamos por unanimidad” remmemoraba orgulloso Ortiz-Patiño. El destino quería que aquel septiembre de 1997 fuese recordado no solo por ser el mes en que España recibió la competición con más solera del planeta para darle el título a una Europa bajo los mandos de un español, Seve Ballesteros, y con dos españoles en sus filas: Olazábal y Garrido. Aquel otoño del 97 fue, además, el mes en que el mun-

do otorgó a Valderrama un puesto privilegiado en el Olimpo de los campos de golf. Una Ryder Cup, la número 32, lluviosa como ninguna a la que los estadounidenses, liderados por un joven Tiger Wood, llegaron creyéndose ganadores para toparse con un equipo europeo formado por doce jugadores de seis nacionalidades cuyas ganas de hacer historia fueron tales que, al final, lo-

graron alzar la copa. Un inesperado y glorioso triunfo que hizo al mundo estar con el corazón en un puño hasta el último hoyo. Un apoteósico 14,5 a 13,5 que se resolvió en el último partido gracias a un inolvidable medio punto conseguido por Colin Montgomerie. Una hazaña única vista por seiscientos millones de espectadores. Días grandes que hicieron de este rincón del Sur el paraíso del golf que es hoy.

Era la primera vez en 67 años que este campeonato bienal disputado entre Estados Unidos y Europa salía de las islas británicas para jugarse en otro escenario del viejo continente. De hecho, no lo ha vuelto a hacer. Será en 2018 cuando Sotogrande le ceda el legado a Paris y se celebre de nuevo una Ryder Cup en Europa continental. Pero, eso, será ya otra historia.n

THE HOLDING OF THE RYDER CUP, AT VALDERRAMA, IN 1997, WAS SOMETHING LEGENDARY. THESE WERE DAYS WHEN THE ENTIRE WORLD´S GAZE WAS FOCUSED ON SOTOGRANDE AS IT WATCHED THE EUROPEAN TEAM CAPTAINED BY SEVERIANO BALLESTEROS EMERGE VICTORIOUS. LOOKING BACK TO OBSERVE THE SNAPSHOTS OF THOSE EPIC DAYS IN 1997 WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE WORK OF JAIME ORTIZ PATIÑO (PARIS, 20 JUNE 1930). HE WANTED A RYDER CUP IN VALDERRAMA AND REALLY STROVE, FIRSTLY TO ATTAIN IT, AND THEN, TO MAKE IT UNBEATABLE.

lthough his family was of Bolivian origins, Ortiz-Patiño always highlighted his European roots. “My grandfather was known in Bolivia was the king of tin, but I was born in Paris and I was always more European than Bolivian”, he explained in one of the interviews he gave to this media outlet. “The first time I set foot on South American ground, in Buenos Aires, I

was 15, and I did not visit Bolivia until I was 17. All my youth, up until World War Two in ´39, I spent in France”, he added regarding his childhood. During his youth, Jaime Ortiz Patiño was devoted to enjoying life, playing tennis and taking part in motor races. However, when he turned 28 he put the brake on these activities and began working for the family busines-

ses. This work increased seven years later when his father passed away and he took his place on the Management Board of the Patiño group. In 1982 he decided to retire and sell his mines in Brazil, Malaysia, Nigeria, New Caledonia, Australia, United States, Canada and Spain (Río Tinto). Back then he already knew about Sotogrande, he had retreated there in

With the Ryder Cup, Ortiz-Patiño fulfilled the aim he had in 1985 when he purchased and remodelled the old Las Aves golf course, turning it into Valderrama. It is a legendary place where the most prestigious events of the European Golf Tour have taken place, the final of the Volvo Masters in the periods 1988-1996, 2002-2008 and two World Championships: 1999 and 2000. ´67 following his divorce. “That was in Holy Week in ´67. I had got divorced and wanted to rest. “I asked my uncle, who played golf, to recommend me a place in the south of Spain and he mentioned Sotogrande to me. He told me that it was really beautiful, but that I would get bored, because there was nothing there. Indeed, when I arrived in Sotogrande there were only 11 homes, and I even knew the names of each owner, but I really liked it”, Patiño recounted to Sotogrande Magazine. The chance to purchase Valderrama (then named Las Aves) arose when he was 55 years old. Firstly, he purchased 50% and some years later he completed the operation by purchasing all of this golf club, with the intention of turning it into the best course in the world. To do so, he had the help of the prestigious designer Robert Trent Jones, who he knew, and who told him that he lacked the land and necessary money. Patiño provided it to him under the condition that he did want his collaborators, rather he wished to work directly with him. That was the case.

And it led to one of the best golf courses in the world: Valderrama. The story was only beginning. However, there is no doubt that the most noteworthy chapter is how this man put his heart and soul into putting Sotogrande onto the world golf map with the holding of the Ryder Cup in Valderrama. The path to achieve it was tough. The European Tour gave a direct no; Seve wanted it in Madrid... Nobody believed that Jaime would achieve it. However, in May 1994, the Ryder Cup Committee put the choice of the course to a vote and the six votes went to Valderrama: “We got it unanimously” reminisced Ortiz-Patiño proudly. Destiny would ensure that September in 1997 was remembered not only as the month in which Spain hosted the most prestigious competition on the planet to grant Europe the title under the captaincy of a Spaniard, Seve Ballesteros, and with two Spaniards in his ranks: Olazábal and Garrido. That autumn of ´97 was also the month in which the world gave Valderrama a privileged place in the Olympus of golf courses.

A Ryder Cup, the 32nd, rainy like no other, that the Americans led by a young Tiger Wood, went into believing they were the winners, before coming up against a European team formed by twelve players of six nationalities whose desire to win was such that in the end they managed to win the cup. An unexpected and glorious triumph that ensured that the whole world had its heart in its mouth right up until the last hole. The exalted climax of 14.5-13.5 was settled in the last game thanks to an unforgettable half-point won by Colin Montgomerie. This unique feat was watched by six-hundred million spectators. These great days made this corner of the South the golfing paradise that it is today. It was the first time in 67 years that this biennial championship held between the United States and Europe left the British Isles in order to be played on another stage of the old continent. In fact, it has not done so since. It will be 2018 when Sotogrande passes on this legacy to Paris and a new Ryder Cup takes place in continental Europe. However, that is another story altogether. n

Un campo de altura que encara la recta final de un meticuloso plan de renovación que lo situará entre los mejores del ranking mundial. Un profundo proceso de mejora que empezó en 2013 y que ha supuesto una importante inversión: “En febrero se completaron con éxito las obras en los nueve primeros hoyos y el próximo invierno se ejecutará el proyecto de los nueve segundos, con el que finaliza-

rá un importante proceso de reformas realizado con el firme propósito de su actual Junta Directiva de seguir siendo, por muchos años, el mejor trazado de Europa. No hemos variado el diseño de Robert Trent Jones pero ha mejorado sensiblemente la calidad, como ya se empieza a reflejar en los rankings”, explica Revieriego. Un trazado excepcional para el único encuentro del European Tour que se juega en España durante 2017, última prueba puntuable que se disputará en el continente antes de que el Tour viaje a China, Sudáfrica y Dubái. García also admits that he is in love with Valderrama, where he likes all the holes: “Each has its own appeal. It is a course that demands a lot from you and does not give you any breathing space, it makes you think and maintain concentration from the moment you step up to the first tee. Un driver, un hierro 3, y se hizo la magia. El ‘Pisha’ anotó en el 17 uno de los 10 mejores golpes en la historia del Tour Europeo. Y, aunque quedó cuarto en el encuentro, pasó a los libros del golf como el protagonista de una gran gesta. Todavía hoy se puede ver a la salida del 17 una placa en recuerdo de ese gran día. SEVILLA PARADA DE LUJO La cuarta prueba del V Circuito Golf Sotogrande viajó desde la urbanización a la capital andaluza para ofrecer a sus jugadores una jornada de golf insuperable en uno de los mejores trazados del país: el Real Club de Golf de Sevilla. El premio al Drive más largo fue para Santiago Urquijo; mientras que Pelayo Villalonga consiguió el trofeo a la Categoría Scratch. En la Categoría Damas, Ana Pérez se llevó el triunfo seguida de María Valle y Olga Fernández. En Segunda Categoría Caballeros, la victoria fue para Antonio Ramírez, seguido en el podio por Juan Bosco Quintanilla y Carlos Carrasco. Por último, Héctor Hernández fue el mejor en la Primera Categoría Masculina, seguido de Javier Rodríguez-Tabernero y Darren Chang.

In addition to revamping the putting surfaces, Finca Cortesin has carried out a drainage improvement program on bunkers in order to rebuild its bunkers using the renowned “Better Billy Bunker” system. ¿Qué futuro le espera al Club de Playa? Como sabe, heredamos un contrato de arrendamiento establecido con el Grupo Trocadero y debo decir que su determinación e iniciativa es espectacular. Vengo a Sotogrande desde 1994 y, antes de establecer mi residencia en 2015, estuve aquí por última vez en el 2010; el cambio de las instalaciones

¿Cómo son las relaciones con el resto de entidades de la zona, como el polo o el Puerto?; ¿Hay a la vista alianzas en pro del desarrollo de la imagen de Sotogrande? Como en todo en la vida algunas son muy buenas y otras desafortunadamente no lo son tanto. Pero debo decir que las relaciones positivas superan claramente a las demás. En cuanto al Puerto, nuestra relación entra de lleno en el apartado de las buenas. El Sr. Vi-

llar Mir y su equipo directivo liderado por Miguel Ángel son de primera clase y un gran apoyo para llevar a Sotogrande a la vanguardia de los destinos de lujo. En otro frente, hemos estado trabajando con Santa Maria Polo Club y están ansiosos por apoyar su iniciativa en el salto de obstáculos, lo cual añadiría un gran atractivo a Sotogrande. Volviendo a los detalles de la Marina, estamos trabajando para hacer de la Marina de Sotogrande una marca y un destino propio. Desgraciadamente, no hemos tenido mucho tiempo para trabajar en ello, pero esta idea debería ver la luz en 2018 o 2019 a más tardar, ya que contamos con un gran apoyo para esta iniciativa de todos los implicados en la zona.

Octubre llega a Sotogrande con el golf por bandera con la celebración del Andalucía Valderrama Masters. ¿Qué papel va a juagar Sotogrande en este encuentro y qué significa para la urbanización? Sotogrande ofrece la mejor oferta de golf de toda Europa Continental, mezclando estilo de vida, excelentes campos de golf y buen tiempo. Es fantástico

para el Real Club Valderrama volver a sacar partido de su ADN con un evento de golf profesional de primera clase, en el que somos un activo copatrocinador y muy orgullosos de ello. Este tipo de iniciativa es fundamental para nuestro destino y nos asegura que estamos en la mente de nuestro público objetivo para el golf. Un evento de tal característica refuerza la posición del Real Club Valderrama y su base de socios. Además de la promoción activa del golf que supone la presencia, próximamente, de los mejores jugadores profesionales del mundo, cada uno de los principales campos de Sotogrande cuenta con su perfil específico y su propio enfoque deportivo. Así, el Real Club de Sotogrande, hacia el golf amateur, encabezado con la Copa de las Naciones y, nosotros, en La Reserva Club, centrándonos en el estilo de vida con eventos como el amateur que le señalaba antes. No debemos olvidarnos de La Cañada Golf Club, que complementa este trío con un fantástico campo y una gran cantera de juniors que, seguramente, se beneficiarán del Andalucía Valderrama Masters.

fectamente que algunas personas no están muy abiertas a las novedades y a ver la evolución, pero los cambios son esenciales para nuestra supervivencia colectiva, nuestra sostenibilidad como destino y para mantener el interés continuo en la oferta inmobiliaria general. Estamos claramente en una encrucijada y si tengo que pensar en una cosa (o dos) es en apoyar iniciativas que resulten atractivas para las próximas generaciones y en asegurarnos de que “La Vida en Sotogrande” siga siendo fiel a los principios originales mientras nos sumergimos en el siglo XXI. Debemos mirar hacia adelante y tenemos la bendición de tener un futuro brillante por delante. n

riรณn recently acquired the shares that did not own in Sotogrande yet. Is this a guarantee of the future for Sotogrande? I do not believe that there was ever any doubt on the intent of Sotogrande SA shareholders regarding their view to participate in the rejuvenation of such a storied destination. Beyond our company, there are many more actors toward ensuring the relevance and longevity. Clearly, we are one of the main actor, but we fully expect all to participate. Making Sotogrande great again and relevant to the next generation is a key priority for Sotogrande SA but it is as well for all the businesses and residents who want to see sustained interest for Sotogrande as a prime destination as well as a residential opportunity. Several are very active towards this goal and I can only congratulate them for their beliefs and dedication.

Orion, now the sole shareholder of Sotogrande SA, will certainly continue supporting the direction we have embarked on since our arrival.

El Mirador and The Seven perfectly reflect that vision of Sotogrande for the next fifty years that you told us about shortly after arriving to Sotogrande; how are these two projects going? La Reserva is the community that plays a critical role in ensuring that Sotogrande is relevant in 50 years from now. Its array of additional amenities are now being developed with an opening targeted for the summer 2018, the first off plan residential sales, achieved at record prices, are now behind us and we have started villa construction. Not only have we turned a corner with all this activity, but more importantly, the vision is becoming reality. The last two years were focused on planning and

permit towards setting the foundation to welcoming our new residents. Regarding The Seven and El Mirador, all is going very well! Sometime I wish it would go faster but overall on track. Those two communities as beacon of our residential offering do enjoy a high level of privacy and security along with extensive services and experiences offered to the future residents to experience righ away and allowing La Reserva de Sotogrande to offer a lifestyle not yet seen within the Costa Del Sol.

The Reserva Club is, however, the central axis of this way of conceiving Sotogrande. This year, we have seen the changes made with tennis club; what will be the next steps? As mentioned above, we are starting the next phase this winter with the Sandy pool, its beach, the beach club &restaurant, the sports lagoon and lap

pool along with its garden and landscape. We will also complete the tennis house to properly support our tennis, padel and multi-sport offering. All opening next Summer!

Will they continue to promote major events such as the Grand Prix or RC44? What are the plans for next year? Yes, definitively! We should see the Sotogrande Grand Prix under a different format with Sotogrande and La Reserva as the basis of the Rally offering a longer presence and opportunity for the community to see unique objects and for our participants to fully enjoy the multi-facet profile of Sotogrande. The RC 44 is also under review and I expect it to happen in the spring. This will certainly continue along with many other activities not to mention our support of the Andalucia Valderrama Masters. Will there be any projects linked to golf? Yes, we have several initiatives towards high-end clubs within Continental Europe and a top level amateur event during Masters week with La Reserva hosting 60 of the top European Senior Amateurs. Also, we are finalising plans to host an Invitational tournament with Senior professionals and amateurs in the spirit of the ATT Pebble Beach or Dunhill Links which are exemplary events in promoting friendship and sports all befitting to what La Reserva and Sotogrande stand for. The Marina has established itself as the meeting point of leisure in Sotogrande; do you plan to reactivate other areas of the urbanization? This was a key objective upon our arrival. Without an active core, full of content and life, it would have been impossible to build our vision for La Reserva. So yes, we are very proud and pleased with the success of the Mercado de Levante, the turnaround in retail operations and the trust the various restaurant concepts have shown through their investments. I must congratulate the stamina of Jan Staels who has been the pioneer in roughing the storm of the crisis and maintaining and evolving his operations. I look forward to the long success of all our tenants and to seeing such a vibrant life continue its expansion beyond the summer months. What future awaits the Beach Club? As you know we inherited a lease

established with the Trocadero Group and I must say that their determination and initiative is spectacular! I have been coming to Sotogrande since 1994 and before setting residence in 2015 was here for the last time in 2010; the turnaround of the facility since my last visit is unbelievable. Dionisio Hernandez and his team are clearly doing all they can to offer a very nice experience at the beach club for our members and guests.

How are the relations with the rest of the entities in the area, such as the pole or the port? Are there any alliances in sight for the development of Sotogrande's image? As in everything in life some are very good and others unfortunately are not as good. But I must say that the positive ones clearly outweigh the others. Regarding the Puerto, our relationship clearly falls in the first category. Mr Villar Mir and his management team led by Miguel Angel are first class and great supporter of bringing Sotogrande to the forefront of luxury destinations. On another front, we have been working with Santa Maria Polo Club and are eager to support their initiative on Show Jumping, this would be a great addition to Sotogrande. Going back to specifics regarding the marina, we are working towards making Sotogrande Marina a brand and destination of its own. Unfortunately, we have not had much time to work on it but this idea should see the day during 2018 or 2019 at the latest as we have great support for such initiative from all involved in the area. October arrives in Sotogrande with golf as its flagship with the celebration of Andalusia Valderrama Masters. What role will Sotogrande play in this meeting and what does it mean for the urbanization? Sotogrande provides the best golf offer within all of Continental Europe, mixing lifestyle, premier golf courses and great weather. It is fantastic for the Real Club Valderrama to again I leverage its DNA with a first-class pro golf event, in which we are an active

co-sponsor and a very proud one! This type of initiative is core to our destination and ensures we are in the mind of our target audience for golf, and beyond. Such exposure reinforces the stature of Real Club Valderrama and its membership base. Beyond Real Club Valderrama actively promoting professional golf with the best professional players in the world present in a couple of weeks, it seems that each of the main courses within Sotogrande have their specific profile and sports focus. Real Club Sotogrande towards amateur golf headlined with the Nation’s Cup and us, at La Reserva Club, focusing on lifestyle with the Senior Celebrity pro-am mentioned earlier. We must not forget La Canada Golf Club which complement this threesome with a fantastic track and a great reservoir of juniors which will surely benefit from the Andalucía Valderrama Masters.

Finally, this is your third summer in Sotogrande; what is your overall assessment so far and how do you look towards the future? Indeed, third summer but frankly this one was quite weird as I did not see it go by! We were very busy preparing for the various launches I mentioned above and with record visitation I was involved in ensuring that our visitors do have the opportunity to discover La Reserva. I do not usually spend much time wandering in the evenings, but I was emotional when seeing all those families enjoying the marina and the terraces during the few summer nights I was there! I can only remember the wall of bricks and the hard sun hitting empty spaces along the new section and just two summers later a vibrant and full display of a large crowd enjoying life and Sotogrande: This moment for me was the reward of the last two years. Also change is not easy! I fully understand that some are not very open to new things or to see evolution but those are essential to our collective survival and sustainability as the destination of choice and to support continued interest in the general real estate offering. We are clearly at a cross road and if I need to think about one thing (or two) it is to work towards supporting initiatives that can be attractive to the next generation and make sure that “Life in Sotogrande” continues to live on the original principles while being fully immersed in the 21st century. We need to look forward and we are blessed to have a bright future in front of us. n

Ahora que se cumplen 20 años de la celebración en Sotogrande de la Ryder Cup y, teniendo en cuenta que esta edición tiene un marcado carácter de golf, no se nos ocurre mejor escapada de otoño que un viaje a París. La ciudad de las luces tomará el relevo en 2018 a Valderrama, celebrando, en su Golf National, la segunda Ryder jugada lejos de las islas británicas. La excusa perfecta para visitar uno de los destinos más bellos del planeta...

i algo tiene París, son monumentos. Ninguno, sin embargo, logra hacer sombra a la gran ‘dama de hierro’ parisina, construida en 1889 para la famosa Exposición Universal: la famosa Torre Eiffel. Cerca de siete millones de visitas al año atestiguan el poder de atracción de esta original obra. Nos dejamos seducir por ella y dibujamos nuestra ruta de viaje oteando su horizonte; ascendiendo, paso a paso, hasta el cielo de París. No importa hacia dónde dirigir la vista; todo se antoja propio de una postal. Hay tanto que ver, que tenemos

que conformarnos con contemplarlo desde las alturas. De vuelta a la tierra, organizamos una breve ruta. Disponemos de poco tiempo, así que tenemos que decidir bien las paradas. Comenzamos en la famosa catedral gótica de Notre-Dame; con sus dos grandes torres, sus gárgolas y el campanario en el que vivió el mítico Jorobado de Notre Dame. Continuamos la excursión visitando el Panteón, con su impresionante y gigantesco interior y su cripta, lugar de eterno descanso de

personajes de la talla de Voltaire o Marie Curie, entre otros. Sin duda, merece la pena reservarle unas horas. La tercera parada es el Palacio Nacional de los Inválidos, uno de los monumentos más importantes de París. Resulta sorprendente contemplar su cúpula dorada sabiendo que en el interior de este complejo descansa Napoleón. A un paso de los Inválidos está el puente de Alexandre III, uno de los más bonitos de la ciudad. Nadie, sin embargo, debería marcharse de París sin visitar el Museo del

Louvre. Situado en el antiguo Palacio de los reyes de Francia es uno de los centros artísticos más ricos del mundo. Verlo al completo requeriría días, asi que nos conformamos con explorarlo durante un rato con la firme idea de volver pronto (son de especial interés los espacios dedicados a Grecia y Egipto). Los Campos Elíseos, con el Arco del Triunfo coronando la Avenida, representan otra de las estampas más famosas de París. Es muy recomendable darse un paseo hasta llegar al monumento. Las

mejores firmas pueblan con lujosas tiendas la zona, que se alza a nuestro paso como una auténtica tentación. La última parte de este fugaz viaje la reservamos para sumergirnos en el barrio de Montmartre, el más bohemio de la ciudad. Su colorido; sus cafés; sus pintorescas plazas o sus empinadas calles. Todo es mágico en este rincón parisino enclavado sobre una colina culminada por la basílica del Sacré Cour (al que se puede ascender en funicular).

Pasear por Montmartre, recordando los escenarios recorridos por Amélie; contemplando a los artistas dibujando sus sueños en la Plaza de los Pintores, o, simplemente, saboreando una taza de café en una romántica terraza, es, sin duda, una experiencia que hay que vivir. Antes de marcharnos, no nos olvidamos de tomar algunas fotos frente al famoso Moulin Rouge, símbolo indiscutible del Montmartre más cabaretero y canalla.n

PA S E O S ÎLE DE LA CITÉ La Île de la Cité es una isla natural formada por el Sena en París. Esta zona es la más antigua de la ciudad. Tanto es así, que en ella se ubican sus orígenes. No olvide visitar su mercadillo de flores y pájaros. PLAZA DE LA CONCORDIA Situada entre los Campos Elíseos y los Jardines de las Tullerías, la Plaza de la Concordia es una de las plazas más emblemáticas de París.

Now that it has been 20 years since the Ryder Cup took place in Sotogrande, and bearing in mind that this edition has a real golfing character, we cannot think of a better autumn getaway than a trip to Paris. The city of lights will take over from Valderrama in 2018, with Golf National holding second Ryder Cup to be played outside of the British Isles. This is the perfect excuse to visit one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet...

f Paris has one thing, it is monuments. However, none overshadows the great Parisian “Iron Lady” built in 1889 for the famous World Fair: the famous Eiffel Tour. Close to seven million visits per year bear witness to the great power of attraction that this original work exerts. We allow ourselves to be seduced by it, and we plan out our route by glimpsing it on the horizon, climbing, step by step, towards the sky of Paris. It does not matter where you look; everything looks like it comes from a postcard. There is so much to see, that we have to make do with seeing it from up high. Back on firm ground again, we organise a short route. We do not have much time, so we need to decide the stop off points carefully. We begin at the famous Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame; with its two great towers, its gargoyles and the bell tower that was home to the legendary Hunchback of Notre Dame. We continue the excursion by visiting the Pantheon, with its impressive and gigantic interior and its crypt, the place of eternal rest for very prestigious figures such as Voltaire and Marie Curie,

among others. It is undoubtedly worth setting aside a few hours for it. The third stop is The National Residence of the Invalids, one of the most important monuments in Paris. It is surprising to see its golden dome knowing that Napoleon lies inside this complex. A short distances from The Invalids is Pont Alexandre III, one of the prettiest bridges in the city. However, nobody should leave Paris without visiting The Louvre Museum. Housed in the former Palace of the Kings of France it is one of the richest artistic centres in the world. Seeing it completely would require days, therefore we have to make do with exploring it for a while with the firm conviction of returning soon (the spaces devoted to Greece and Egypt are of special interest). The Champs Elysees, with the Arc de Triumphe crowning the Avenue, represent another of the most famous images of Paris. It is highly recommended to walk along it until you reach the monument. The best brands fill the area with luxury shops, emerging along the walk as a true temptation.

We have reserved the last part of this fleeting trip to head into the neighbourhood of Montmartre, the most bohemian in the city. Its colour, cafes, picturesque plazas and steep streets. Everything is magical in this Parisian area located on a hill and crowned by the Basilica of the SacréCœur Basilica (that you can head up to in a cable car). Walking around Montmartre, remembering the sce-

nes of Amélie; watching artists painting their dreams in the Place des Peintres, or simply savouring a cup of coffee on a romantic terrace is undoubtedly an experience that you need to enjoy. Before leaving, do not forget to take some photos in front of the famous Moulin Rouge, the unquestionable symbol of the more cabaret and roguish side to Montmartre.n

ÎLE DE LA CITÉ The Île de la Cité is a natural island formed by the Seine in Paris. This area is the oldest in the city. So much so, that it is the source of the city´s origins. Do not forget to visit its flower and bird market.

PLACE DE LA CONCORDE Located between the Champs Elysees and The Tuileries Gardens, Place de la Concorde is one of the most emblematic plazas in Paris.

A WALK ALONG THE SEINE A very good option for seeing the city is to take a trip on the Batobus. The city´s river transport offers outstanding views over the River Seine. Do not forget to gaze at the marvellous bridges dotted along the route.

a isla de Okinawa tiene una historia rica, plagada de testimonios materiales que la atestiguan y que se presentan ante el viajero con excelentes reclamos para conocerlos. Un buen ejemplo son los Gusuku (castillos o fortalezas), elementos patrimoniales, actualmente en ruinas, del pasado Ryúkyúū. Entre estos castillos, destacan el de Nakagusuku o el de Katsuren, que se enfrentaron entre ellos alrede-

dor del siglo XV. Este último, el de Katsuren, data del siglo XII, y en recientes excavaciones se encontraron monedas romanas auténticas. Aunque el misterio continúa abierto, parece claro que Okinawa mantuvo una larga tradición comercial con el resto de Asia, y de ahí puede venir esa conexión con las antiguas monedas romanas, que podían usarse mucho después de caído el Imperio.

LARGA VIDA Los habitantes de Okinawa son conocidos por su longevidad. Esta isla es la que tiene un mayor porcentaje de habitantes centenarios. Alabada por la crítica, Soy un gato es una obra maestra de la literatura japonesa. En España, ya son incontables las ediciones de esta joya cómica. El narrador de la obra es un gato que no tiene nombre que, de manera sagaz y con una perspicacia sólo reservada para los felinos, se adentra en la sociedad de su tiempo. Esa época es la de Era Meiji, en el que se produjo una transición hacia la modernización de las costumbres y la tecnología. Esto produjo, en no pocas ocasiones, choques entre el interés por el progreso y el de conservar las tradiciones. Este gato suspicaz hará que los lectores se rían al tiempo que descubren la sociedad nipona de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX.

Hay pocos escritores mejores que el periodista Manuel Chaves Nogales para acercarnos a los difíciles años de la guerra civil española y la caída de Francia ante la ofensiva nazi en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Denostado por ambos bandos de la contienda fratricida española por su visión no partidista de la barbarie, se refugió en Francia, donde sufrió la invasión alemana que llevó a Francia a capitular. De ese fortuito encuentro nació una historia de amor repleta de dificultades. Carmen estaba casada, y en esa época existía un absoluto rechazo social hacia el divorcio. Pero también la guerra y el exilio marcaron sus vidas. La historia marcó a sus hijas, que fueron las que descubrieron esta apasionante historia a la escritora. There are few writers better than the journalist Manuel Chaves Nogales for helping us to take a closer look at the difficult years of the Spanish Civil War and the fall of France to the Nazi offensive in the Second World War. Vilified by both sides of the Spanish fratricidal war for his non-partisan vision of the barbarism, he sought refuge in France, where he suffered the German invasion that led France to capitulate. As a result of this experience, Chaves Nogales wrote this work where he describes, in first person, the events that led the France that embodied the highest democratic values to succumb to the authoritarian principles of Nazism.

It is said that reality beats fiction. That phrase could define the new novel by Sonsoles Ónega, which tells the complex and true love story that began in the 1930´s. The characters, Carmen Trilla and Captain Federico Escofet, were two real people that met on a train in 1933. This fortuitous encounter resulted in a love story full of difficulties. Carmen was married, and in that era there was total social rejection of divorce. However, war and exile also marked their lives. The story really impacted on their daughters, and they were the ones that enabled the writer to discover this exciting story. This book won the 2017 Fernando Lara novel prize.

Acclaimed by critics, I Am a Cat is a masterpiece of Japanese literature. In Spain there have been endless editions of this comical gem. The narrator of the work is an unnamed cat that, in a wise manner, and with the cunning that is only reserved for felines, takes a deeper look at the society of its time. That era was the Meiji Period, during which a transition took place towards the modernisation of customs and technology. On a number of occasions, that led to clashes between the interest in progress and that of preserving traditions. This suspicious cat will make readers laugh while simultaneously discovering the Japanese society of the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th century.

Sotogrande muestra su ‘arte’ a través de La Huella. Un original maratón de pintura en el que pequeños y mayores se dieron cita para compartir, a golpe de brochazo, su amor por la cultura.

a Huella fue una original iniciativa ubicada y promovida por el Espacio Cultural Oslvado Lobalzo de la Ribera del Marlin de Sotogrande. Un maratón artístico en el que durante siete días y seis noches todo aquel que lo deseó pudo acercarse a dar unas pinceladas sobre el gran mural de setenta metros cuadrados preparado para la ocasión. Academias, colegios, adultos, niños y artistas profesionales y amateur pasaron por la Marina para aportar su trocito de arte en este gran lienzo.

La evolución de la actividad se pudo seguir prácticamente en directo a través de diferentes plataformas digitales y, de forma paralela, se realizó también un concurso de fotografías sobre el propio mural a través de una serie de hastags en Redes Sociales. Tras un delicado proceso de barnizado y tratamiento el resultado final de la obra fue el broche perfecto para cerrar el verano en Sotogrande en clave cultural.n

a Huella was an original initiative located in and supported by the Osvaldo Lobalzo Cultural Space in Ribera del Marlin in Sotogrande. This was an artistic marathon lasting seven days and six nights where anyone who wanted could come to add some brushstrokes to a great mural of seventy square metres prepared for the occasion. Academies, schools, adults, children and professional and amateur artists passed by the Marina in order to add their little piece of art

to this great canvas. It was practically possible to follow the development of the activity live through different digital platforms, and alongside this, a photography competition was also held on a the mural itself through a series of hashtags on Social Networks. Following a delicate varnishing and treatment process the end result of the work was the perfect way to close out summer in Sotogrande on a cultural note. n

nteriormente se habían hecho diferentes estudios sobre este tema de los fortines o búnkeres por miembros del Instituto de Estudios Campogibraltareños, entre los que citaré a Ángel Sáez (director del IECG), Pedro Gurriarán, Alfonso Escuadra y César Sánchez de Alcázar. Los tres primeros realizaron el catálogo de los fortines todavía existentes dentro del Campo de Gibraltar y César Sánchez, como militar y estudioso del tema, ha investigado a fondo en diferentes archivos militares. Precisamente la existencia de estos documentos en archivos militares sevillanos fue lo que animó a este arquitecto de esa ciudad a estu-

diar este tema, al que puede aportar un punto de vista profesional. Estos fortines fueron declarados por la Junta de Andalucía Bien de Interés Cultural. En 1939 el general Queipo de Llano formó una comisión de fortificaciones al frente de la cual puso al general Pedro Javenois, ya experto en éstas y otras construcciones militares, constituyéndose la Comisión de Fortificaciones de la Frontera Sur.Se construyeron 498 búnkeres y otras obras: caminos y carreteras, una pista de aterrizaje en Barría (Jimena), una pantalla de enmascaramiento en la pista militar nº7, en la zona del Faro de Punta Carnera, cuya finalidad era impedir la vista des-

de Gibraltar de los movimientos por esta pista militar. Estas obras las llevaron a cabo el Regimiento de Fortificaciones nº 4, obreros civiles y los campos de trabajo constituidos con prisioneros de guerra. El historiador José Manuel Algarbani, que ha estudiado a fondo este tema de los prisioneros, dice que en estos campos de trabajo campogibraltareños trabajaron unos tres mil hombres, que en su mayoría habían combatido en el bando republicano. Los búnkeres se extendían desde el río Guadiaro hasta Conil. En la actual urbanización de Sotogrande hubo más de uno, pero ignoro si se conservan restos de al-

guno, bien aislado o integrado en alguna finca. El más cercano al río actualmente es el que está en la playa de Guadalquitón, que ha formado parte durante el verano del chiringuito por ello llamado “Búnker Sotogrande Beach Club”. La mayor concentración se daba en La Línea, cercana a la frontera, en Sierra Carbonera y en los términos de San Roque, Los Barrios y Algeciras. El catálogo elaborado abarcaba los municipios del Campo de Gibraltar, ámbito del IECG y de la Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar. El autor de la tesis ha tenido en cuenta esta circunstancia y aunque estudia el ámbito total de estas fortificaciones, se centra

especialmente en las construidas en los términos de Barbate y Conil, con el fin de completar el catálogo. Los militares que construyeron estas obras se alojaban bien en barracones al efecto o en los cortijos próximos. En el libro de los historiadores mallorquines Honorato Bauzá y Margalida Juan Taberner sobre los mallorquines que trabajaron durante estos años en las fincas de la SIAG, una de las cuales era Guadalquitón, insertan fotografías de estos militares junto con los trabajadores y encargados del cortijo. Probablemente en los de Paniagua, Conchudo y otros próximos también los utilizarían. Próximamente pienso asistir en Se-

villa a la presentación de esta tesis, muy importante para los que nos interesamos por la historia y el patrimonio cultural de esta zona, en la que el aspecto militar y defensivo ha sido siempre predominante. Ahí están todavía las torres de la época musulmana o de los primeros siglos después de la reconquista, que todavía perduran. I HAVE NOW BEEN ABLE TO VIEW THE FIRST DOCTORAL THESIS PRODUCED ON THE SUBJECT, CREATED BY A SEVILLIAN ARCHITECT, WHICH WILL BE PRESENTED IN A FEW WEEKS. CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE IT THAT A FAMILY RELATIVE OF MINE, A TEACHER AT THE A CORUÑA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, WILL FORM PART OF THE COMMITTEE THAT WILL JUDGE THE THESIS, WHICH HAS ENABLED ME TO READ IT SUPERFICIALLY.

reviously, different studies have been carried out about this subject of the forts or bunkers by members of the Institute of Campo de Gibraltar Studies, among whom I will mention Ángel Sáez (director of the IECG), Pedro Gurriarán, Alfonso Escuadra and César Sánchez de Alcázar. The first three produced the catalogue of forts that still exist in Campo de Gibraltar and César Sánchez, as a military man and scholar of the subject, has carried out extensive research in different military archives. Indeed, it was the existence of these documents in Sevillian military archives was what encouraged this architect from that city to study this subject, which he can contribute a professional point of view to. These forts were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Regional Government of Andalusia. In 1939 General Queipo de Llano formed a fort committee to be led by General Pedro Javenois, an expert in these and other military construction, forming the Fort Committee of the South Border. 498 Bunkers were built along with other words: paths and roads, a landing runway in Barría (Jimena), a masking screen on military runway no.7 in the areas of the Punta Carnero Lighthouse, aimed at preventing those in Gibraltar from seeing the movement

on this military runway. These works were carried out the by the Fort Regiment no.4, civil workers and the work camps formed by prisoners of war. The historian José Manuel Algarbani, who has studied the subject in depth, says that around three thousand men worked in these work camps, most of whom had fought on the Republican side. The bunkers extended from Guadiaro River to Conil. There was more than one in what is now the resort of Sotogrande, but I do not know if the remains of any have been preserved, either isolated or integrated into a property. The closest to the river at present is the one that is on Guadalquitón beach, and during summer it formed part of the so-called “Sotogrande Bunker Beach Club”. The greatest concentration was in La Línea, close to the border, in Sierra Carbonera, and in the municipalities of San Roque, Los Barrios and Algeciras. The catalogue created encompassed the municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, the sphere of the IECG and of the Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar. The author of the thesis has taken these circumstances into account and although he studies the total sphere of these forts, he focuses especially on the forts built in the municipalities

of Barbato and Conil, with the aim of completing the catalogue. The soldiers that build these works either stayed in barracks created for that purpose or in nearby farmhouses. In the book by the Mallorcan historians Honorato Bauzá and Margalida Juan Taberner on the Mallorcans that worked during these years at the properties of the SIAG, one of which was Guadalquitón, they insert photos of these soldiers along with the workers and people in charge of the farmhouse. They probably also used them in those of Paniagua, Conchudo and other nearby farmhouses would also have used them. Soon, I am thinking about attending the presentation of this thesis in Seville, which is very important for those of us that are interested in history and the cultural heritage of this area, where the military and defensive aspect has always been of crucial importance. Nuevas victorias en los años 83, 84 y 85 en manos de diferentes y experimentados pilotos y por diferentes escenarios pusieron punto final a la presencia de la marca bávara en estas competiciones. Muchos pilotos privados continuaron eligiendo esta montura para competir en rallies al más alto nivel. En 1993

BMW lanzó la R1100 GS, sustituyendo el motor bóxer de dos válvulas por cilindro por otro con cuatro por cilindro. Toda una revolución. También ese año se puso a la venta la BMW F 650 GS, monocilíndrica de motor Rotax. La F significa “Funduro”, combinación del término inglés “fun” (diversión) y enduro. he initials GS mean “all-terrain and road” in German. Since the outset, way back at the end of the 70´s and the start of the 80´s, the GS series of BMW motorbikes, powered by their robust, powerful and reliant boxer engines, have been and remain a benchmark for people who are passionate about the two-wheeled world. It has now been almost 40 years. Their appearances at the first editions of the most famous rally in the world, the Paris Dakar, the essence and heart of adventure, made these creations

of German engineering the models to follow (by a long way) by all the competitors. lenmorangie Milsean is a Scotch Whisky matured in deeply roasted wine barrels. Its sweet and spicy notes are reminiscent of the delight of sweets kept in glass jars that were displayed on the shelves of traditional confectioners. Milsean is created first of all in oak barrels that previously contained Bourbon and it is then matured for several years in barrels that were previously used to hold red wine. It is an unfiltered 46º coppery beech colour, with sweet and spicy notes of cane sugar, ripe fruit, dulce de leche, coconut and butter. Its complex sugar coated taste includes fruit tart, plum, cherries and confit orange peel, at the end ginger and brown sugar notes emerge. It is an especially sweet temptation.n

t is strange that one of the best whiskies on the planet is Japanese and not Scottish, as you would expect. This is the opinion of Jim Murray, head of the Whisky Bible, which chose the Yamazaki Sherry Cask as the best drink of 2015. For those that love authentic premium whiskies, October will witness the arrival of a new gem from the whisky house Suntory: Yamazaki Mizunara 2017. They say it is the soul of whisky. Suntory whiskies usually mature in sherry barrels. However, the new Yamazaki, is the result of mixing an exclusive selection of unique malt whiskies in Mizunara barrels (an oak that is only found in some hidden regions of Japan) for at least 18 years. A long maturation period, that reveals that distinctive flavour of condensed sweetness, dried fruit, coconut, orange marmalade and the silky texture and that aroma of incense offered by sandalwood and aloe that makes these whiskies unique products throughout the world. Perhaps because of that, the price will be around one thousand Euros. Whoever gets the chance to taste it will be very lucky. n

Curiosamente, existe uno que, tras su envejecimiento en Escocia, termina su afinamiento en la bodega de González Byass en Jerez de la Frontera, rompiendo así las reglas no escritas del whisky. Su nombre es Nomad y destaca en el mundo entero por ser el primer outland whisky del mercado. Nomad es un premium blended elaborado a partir de treinta diferentes whiskies de malta y de grano de Speyside (Highlands, Escocia), con envejecimientos entre 5 y 8 años. Posteriormente, el blend resultante es afinado durante un mínimo de 12 meses en botas, previamente envinadas con Pedro Ximénez, bajo las condiciones irrepetibles de la emblemática y centenaria bodega jerezana. Su doble envejecimiento, primero en Escocia y posteriormente en Jerez, hace de este whisky una auténtica rareza. Un verdadero lujo de color topacio con reflejos muy brillantes que presenta un aroma muy personal, notas de malta y recuerdos de madera y sherry. En boca es muy suave y elegante, destacando las sensaciones de pasas, miel y un bouquet inconfundible por su afinado en botas jerezanas que contuvieron Pedro Ximénez. Final de boca largo y placentero con notas de vainilla y frutos secos pasificados. Un whisky muy elegante y con profundo retrogusto. Hay que probarlo.n

Strangely, there is one that, following the ageing process in Scotland, ends up being refined at the González Byass winery in Jerez de la Frontera, thus breaking the unwritten rules of whisky. It is called Nomad and it stands out worldwide for being the first outland whisky on the market. Nomad is a premium blended whisky created using thirty different malt and grain whiskies from Speyside (Highlands Scotland), with ageing of between 5 and 8 years. Subsequently, the resulting blend is refined for a period of at least 12 months in barrels, previously used to hold Pedro Ximénez, with the unrepeatable conditions of the emblematic and century-old Jerez winery. arqués de Riscal has been creating rosé wines since the sixties. The start of this adventure coincide with the centenary of the Winery, and now it is gaining momentum with the arrival of Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas. Defined by its creators as their most original rosé, this surprising wine is created at their winery in Rueda, home to the area of Villaester de Toro and the old vines, more than 80 years old, ungrafted, where the sandy soil protected all of the vine from the attack of phylloxera. Among its many virtues, its original maturation stands out. Once the fermentation of the Garnacha and Tempranillo has finished, a small proportion of the latter variety is matured for a short period of three months on Sauvignon Blanc wine lees, which provides the wine with more structure and complexity, and gives it a lot of character. We uncorked a bottle of this brand new wine in order to discover all of these secrets ad understands why

Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas is an atypical rosé. We were presented with a pale, shiny and lively rosé wine. There is no doubt that beauty features among its virtue. Its nose presents intense aromas of strawberry and raspberry, that comes from the Tempranillo variety (Tinta de Toro). Along with them, we detect some floral notes provided by the Garnacha, which is also responsible for the low colour intensity of this wine. In the mouth, we enjoy a fresh and balanced wine, a length that is uncommon, and a great complexity, which entices you to want to continue to enjoy it. In order to complete it and enrich it, we matched up the win with delicious red prawns from Garrucha, in Almería. The combination is excellent. As is our verdict of this new wine by Bodegas Marqués de Riscal. Welcome Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas; a new pleasure for the senses. n

Sotogrande Magazine travelled to the city of Alba to taste this gift of nature at its famous International White Truffle Fair. The best place to discover one of the most pleasurable morsels on the planet. Delizioso! As if by magic, white truffles emerge from the ground when autumn arrives. It is only do so in the lands of Piedmont, in the area around Alba, thus giving its inhabitants one of the most sought-after products in the culinary world. Thus underground mushroom grows spontaneously at depths ranging between five and thirty centimetres. Only the most daring and well-trained dogs and pigs are capable of tracking its intense perfume until they find them. They do this in the silence of night, the time when the odours are most intense and it is easier to find these valuable natural treasures.

The difficult harvest takes place between October to December, and means that annual production is always a mystery. This undoubtedly adds value to this product, and people end up paying really extortionate prices for it. With an ochre colour on the outside and a reddish-brown tone with white streaks on the inside, every white truffle is unique. The most typical way to serve it is raw and cut into thin sheets, on pastas, rice dishes, carpaccios or fried eggs, and it adds an unbeatable touch with its aroma. It is an authentic delight and those in the know recommend tasting it just after it has been collected. To do so, there is nothing better than an autumn getaway to Alba in order to enjoy its International White Truffle Fair, which is celebrating its 87th edition this year, from 7 October to 26 November. De manos de Vinopolis viajamos a Cigales, en la provincia de Valladolid, para mostrar a nuestros lectores Hiriart, una bodega actual, con historia y experiencia, que combina tradición y nuevas tecnologías para expresar el arte de hacer vino.

iñas viejas, variedades enraizadas en la zona, vendimia manual y mantenimiento de la superficie han sido las señas de identidad de un lugar como Cigales, en la provincia de Valladolid, que compite, presentando su pequeño territorio como elemento fundamental de su identidad por la calidad. Cigales es joven como Denominación de Origen, tiene 20 años. Se encuentra entre Ribera del Duero, Rueda y Toro. El clima es similar, el terreno

y las variedades también. Tradicionalmente, esta región es famosa por sus vinos rosados, pero en los últimos años los tintos están alcanzando gran prestigio también. Dentro de la D.O. Cigales, HIRIART mantiene su propia idiosincrasia para tratar de obtener calidad con una producción limitada y controlada de sus viñas, que datan sus plantaciones desde 1940 hasta 1992. cultivo en vaso indican cada día los cuidados que hay que tener para limitar la producción muy por debajo de los márgenes de lo permitido por la Denominación de Origen Cigales. Variedades tradicionales de la zona como el Tinto del país (Tempranillo), la Garnacha y las variedades blancas Verdejo y Albillo son la base de sus vinos. Rosados con la mezcla de las cuatro variedades vendimiadas conjuntamente y, por otro lado, la vendimia independiente de Garnacha y Tinta para la obtención de los tintos. Cada día, la Bodega muestra su afán por conocer la viña para obtener, así, lo mejor de ella, en función de las condiciones climatológicas de cada año para, con la misma viña, hacer cada año un ‘milagro laico’ y lograr transformar los mostos en vinos personalizados. Su lema ha sido es y será “El arte de hacer vino”. Un trabajo de artesanos que modelan diferentes materiales para lograr un vino que transmita su conocimiento y personalidad.

SUS VINOS Periodistas independientes del mundo del vino y profesionales publicaban sobre Bodega Hiriart: “Sin ruido, esta bodega toma posiciones en su lucha por crear una cara nueva del fenómeno cultural denominado Cigales. Prueba más que superada.” Está claro que Bodega Hiriart utiliza sus antiguas viñas (50-90 años) para elaborar un estilo propio según el “terroir” de Cigales. Vinos elegantes, refrescante y emocionantes con los que disfrutar y emocionarse: • Hiriart Roble es un vino elegante, fresco y ligero con un toque de madera que solo supera la fruta. • Hiriart Crianza es un juego de la elegancia y la complejidad de la fruta y el uso de tres tipos de madera. • Los vinos rosados también tienen algo especial. Junto a la base de Tinta del País (Tempranillo) y un pequeño

porcentaje de Garnacha, hay un porcentaje Verdejo. Esto le da exactamente lo que falta a la mayoría de los rosados españoles: Frescura, una columna vertebral de la acidez. También muestra un baile seductivo de los aromas, frutas tropicales y cítricos del verdejo, con la fruta roja de Tinta del País y Garnacha. Las etiquetas de sus son diseñadas por un pintor Castellano-Leonés, amigo de la familia, Manolo Sierra.n

Cigales is young as a Designation of Origin, 20-years old. It is located between Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro. The climate is similar, as is the

land and grape varieties. Traditionally, this region is famous for its rosé wines, but over the last few years its red wines have also attained great prestige. Within the Cigales D.O, HIRIART maintains its own particular character in order to try and obtain quality with a limited and controlled production from its vines, with plantings dating from between 1940 and 1992. A modern venue has been erected on the site of an old winery from the 18th century that

remains intact, combining tradition with new technologies for producing wines in order to guarantee quality, the ultimate goal of this well nurtured family project. day in order to limit the production which is far below the limits of what is allowed by the Cigales Designation of Origin. Traditional varieties of the area such as Tinto del País (Tempranillo), Garnacha and the white varieties Verdejo and Albillo are the basis of the wines. There are rosés with a mix of the four varieties that are harvested together, and on the other hand, the independent harvest of garnacha and Tinta in order to produce its red wines. Each day, the Bodega shows its desire to discover more about the vine in order to obtain the best from it, in accordance with the climate conditions of each year, in order to, with the same vine, make a “secular miracle” each year and manage to transform the grape juice into custom wines. Its slogan has been, is and always will be “The art of making wine”. The work of craftsmen who shape different materials in order to attain a wine that transmits their knowledge and character.

Elegant, refreshing and exciting wines to be enjoyed and to get excited about. • Hiriart Roble is an elegant, fresh and light wine with a touch of wood that is only surpassed by the fruit. • Hiriart Crianza is a blend of the elegance and complexity of fruit and the use of three types of wood. • The rosé wines also have something special. Along with the base of the Tinta del País variety (tempranillo) and a

small percentage of Garnacha, there is a percentage of Verdejo. This adds exactly what is missing from the majority of Spanish rosé wines: Freshness, and a backbone of acidity. It also offers a seductive dance of aromas, tropical and citrus fruits from the Verdejo, with the red fruit from the Tinta del País and Garnacha. The labels of its wines are designed by a family friend from Castile-Leon, Manolo Sierra.n
