Research Reveals Plantbased Diet Boosts

Metabolism

According to a control trial published in Jama Network Open, the best diet for burning calories is a plant-based diet. It results in weight loss and improves cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight individuals. WWW.HEALTHSPECTRA.COM | NOVEMBER 2020

How was the study conducted?

Wondering what are these?

Random participants who were overweight and had no history of diabetes were a part of an intervention or control group in a 1:1 ratio.

These are accumulated fats in muscles and liver cells. They conducted a similar experiment on other participants through magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

This control group followed a few rules. For 16 weeks, all the participants followed a low-fat, plant-based diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes with no calorie limit and stayed to it without making changes. Exercises and medication routines remained the same unless they were directed by their personal doctors. Indirect calorimetry was used by researchers to measure the number of calories burnt by the participants after a standardized meal at both the beginning and end of the study. The entire control group’s after-meal burn didn’t change. However, the after-meal calorie burn of a plant-based group increased by 18.7%, on average, after 16 weeks. This is one of the most significant findings of160 million obese Americans. Think of how motivating it is to burn calories right after having a plant-based diet. Over the years, this would significantly help with managing weight. Interestingly, within 16 weeks, all the participants in the plant-based group lost 6.4 kg (about 14 pounds), on average, compared to no change in the control group. Besides, there was a dip in the fat mass and visceral fat volume. The researchers didn’t stop at this, they collaborated with Yale University researchers Kitt Petersen, MD, and Gerald Shulman, MD, to track intramyocellular lipid and hepatocellular lipid. 19

As a result, individuals in the plant-based group could lose out on fat inside the liver and muscle cells by 34% and 10%. Even though the control group did not experience significant changes. The fats stored in these cells have been linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. As per the doctor’s analysis, the insulin’s ability to move glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells is disturbed when fats get accumulated in the liver and muscle cells. After 16 weeks of consuming a plant-based diet, all the participants could successfully reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Besides a plant-based diet improving metabolism, this study even offered a better insight into the link between fat within the cells and insulin resistance.

What Does A Plant-Based Diet Include? It focuses on less processed foods. It doesn’t include animal products. It is inclusive of all kinds of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Doesn’t include refined foods or added sugar. Gives attention to food quality. Introduction Across the world, Neonatal (or congenital) diabetes mellitus (NDM) is likely to affect 1 in 90,000-1,60,000 born babies. This form of diabetes is diagnosed in babies under the age of nine months.

What Is Neonatal Diabetes? As a baby is born, for cells to make energy, the body needs insulin. Having said, babies who have neonatal diabetes are not in a position to produce enough insulin and this increases their blood glucose levels. Neonatal diabetes is different from type-1 diabetes. However, this condition can be treated. Usually, genetic testing is recommended for this condition. This type of diabetes is a genetic disorder and so far there is no way to prevent this condition.

Treatment For the most part, there are two ways of treating neonatal diabetes. Either a drug named glibenclamide is given or through insulin. 50% of babies suffering from neonatal diabetes are given glibenclamide. The purpose of giving this drug is to enable the pancreas to release sufficient insulin. That being said, there is no treatment for transient diabetes. Exercise performance, blood, and muscle oxygen levels aren’t bad for healthy individuals wearing a face mask during tough workouts, a new study reveals.

This study was conducted by the University of Saskatchewan (USask). However, there were a few questions raised in this study.

What was the question? Would wearing a mask during vigorous exercise compromise oxygen uptake or increase the rebreathing of carbon dioxide, wherein increased carbon dioxide replaces oxygen in the blood. However, the study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health hasn’t found any proof or evidence to bring out these concerns.

FITNESS The researchers who worked on this study state that people can wear a face mask while exercising with no serious effects on performance and a little impact on the blood and muscle oxygenation. Moreover, having a mask on the face is like a shield and less risky in a closed place where everyone would be exercising in a group when all fitness centers open up. The study focused on evaluating the use of a three-layer cloth face mask. This kind of mask was recommended by Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer.

How was the study conducted? This study included 14 physically active and healthy women and men. Around 24 hours before the test, they controlled their diet, previous physical activity, and sleep. Phil Chilibeck, a professor in the USask College of Kinesiology, who was a co-author of the study said that if people wear face masks while working out indoors, they would feel safer and this would allow gyms to remain open even during covid-19. This way, sports would continue without a hindrance.

participants have to do? All the participants had to warm-up on a stationary bike. Later, increasing the intensity on the bike while they maintained a required pedal rate. The test was over right after they failed to keep with the pedal rate. Based on the fitness level, a participant tends to feel exhausted anywhere between six to 12 minutes.

Observations All the participants were assessed and they did the test three times each, once wearing a surgical face mask, once wearing a cloth face mask, and once with no face mask. The participant’s blood and muscle oxygen levels using non-invasive measurement tools were assessed throughout the test. Chilbeck believes that this study was done at the right time when new public health orders go into effect with making masks mandatory in indoor public spaces in Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert to stop the spread of COVID-19. The others who were included in the USask research team were kinesiology alumni, Keely Shaw, John Ko, Scotty Butcher from the School of

Rehabilitation Medicine, and Gordon Zello from the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition.

These findings are essential as it gives the doctor’s an understanding of the impact of COVID-19 in the pediatric population.

As per a new study, in rare cases, the heart stops beating after having sex. That being said, this is only a possibility that is not commonly seen. In the study conducted, researchers have gone through the information of more than 4,500 people who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest, wherein suddenly the heart stops beating due to a flaw in the heart’s electrical activity. Further, the study found that among most cases, less than 1 percent of cardiac arrests occurred during or immediately after sexual activity.

As per researchers, this is the first study to examine sexual activity as a trigger or the cause for a sudden cardiac arrest in the entire population. 45

These findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions meeting in Anaheim, California, and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. According to Dr. Sumeet Chugh, medical director of the Heart Rhythm Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, the possibility of a sudden cardiac arrest occurring during sexual activity was low. Further, he said that this would be given as an assurance to all the heart disease patients and is based on actual data. In instances where sex was linked with cardiac arrest, almost 94 percent of these were in men. In men, about 1 in 100 cases of cardiac arrest were linked with sex, compared with just 1 in 1,000 cases among women. Usually, people who experienced sudden cardiac arrest during sex were considered younger. On average, they were around 60 years when compared to those who had a sudden

cardiac arrest when they turned 65 on an average. Besides, those who had a cardiac arrest while having sex had an existing heart condition or were on heart medication as those who had a sudden cardiac arrest at other times. As per findings, researchers said that one-third of individuals who had a heart attack while having sex was given a CPR. Until an ambulance shows up, CPR is performed by a witness. Further, these findings stress educating the public about the importance of CPR for sudden-cardiacarrest patients. Chances of survival are more if sexual partners learn the CPR process and make an effort to help their partners who have a sudden cardiac arrest. Multiple research studies have proved that CPR performed by bystanders would improve the chances of survival from cardiac arrest.

Based on a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, men getting bald might be hinting at a risk linked with symptomatic coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection. As per the study published, it was likely that men of the same age group with no hair loss and the one’s with “severe” hair loss were at a bigger risk of being tested positive for COVID-19. There was an investigation done on this issue. Demographic and clinical information of more than 5,00,000 individuals was taken from the UK Biobank. This investigation assessed hair loss patterns in 1941 men who were hospitalized for COVID-19. Based on images adapted from the Hamilton-Norwood scale, the men there were asked to categorize their hair loss. In total, the scale had 4 options, (1) no hair loss (2) slight hair loss (3) moderate hair loss 47

(4) severe hair loss This hair loss data were collected and compared between the two groups. One, in patients with a positive COVID-19 test (n=336) and patients with a negative test (n=1605).

Apart from this, COVID-19 test results were derived from the UK Biobank. Taking into consideration factors such as age, body mass index, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes, the relationship between balding severity and the likelihood of testing positive for COVID-19 was assessed through a multivariable logistic regression. On the whole, there was a correlation between an increase in hair loss and covid-19 infection. Among the 592 patients who said no hair loss, 15.03% tested positive for COVID-19. Among the 551 patients who said moderate, the percentage of positive tests increased to 18.15% and 20.05%, respectively. This

was a similar case even with patients who said severe hair loss. When compared to the ones who said “no hair loss”, those who said “ severe hair loss” were more at a risk to test positive. Looking at those who said slight or moderate hair loss, none of them showed signs of being tested covid-19 positive when compared to the ones who said no hair loss. Given the fact that severe androgenic alopecia is associated with Covid-19 hospitalization, this experiment was done. Having said, since this balding data was self-reported, according to study authors, it still remains to be a limitation. To get a confirmation that baldness is associated with covid-19, a few more observations need to be made. This risk of baldness being associated with covid-19 would help clinicians and public health authorities know how to study this further.
