Scientists working at the Universities of Bristol and Eastern Finland in a paper published that handgrip strength can detect whether an individual is at a risk of suffering from Type 2 Diabetes or not. 776 men and women who never had a history of diabetes for over 20 years were asked to hold a handgrip and the muscular strength they applied to this hand grip was assessed and used as a screening tool to help individuals know if they are at a risk of suffering from diabetes or not.

How did they detect lesser risk of diabetes? Patients squeezed the dyanometer applying all their strength for 5 minutes.

Researchers are yet to test this using individual patient data. Checking the risk of diabetes with a handgrip is one of the most simplest and effective methods to identify the risk of diabetes in the future. This screening tool is seen more effective in checking the risk of diabetes in women. In the month of April this year, one of the studies of American Journal of Preventive Medicine said that hand grip can help doctors perform time-efficient screening tools for diabetes. This study identified levels of handgrip strength/weakness related to type 2 diabetes in men and women based on their age and body weights.

Per unit, as the handgrip strength value increased it showed a 50% decrease in the risk of diabetes. Per unit, if the handgrip strength value decreased, it indicated a risk of cardiovascular diseases or disability. Until now, there was no clarity on the relationship between handgrip strength and type 2 diabetes given the fact that there was a discrepancy in the results. They even considered factors such as the age, family history of diabetes, physical activity, smoking, hypertension, waist circumference, and fasting plasma glucose which is usual.
