Caused by the shape of my red blood cells being a sickle shape rather than the normal round shape, so they get stuck and clump together, causing excruciating pains in the joints. About 20 years ago I was told by my doctor that people with sickle cell anaemia do not often live beyond the age of 30 years old, so according to those statistics, I only had a couple of years left to live. I have known people with sickle cell that have died below the age of 30. My own nephew died at the age of 18 from sickle cell. I am well passed the age of 30 and still living and see this as a blessing and also due to the fact that I started to give my body what it needed, my blood count is now normal and I have not taken medication for 20 years.
