Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

ear Reader,

I am delighted to introduce you to the latest edition of the KGH Radio magazine, which we hope will tell you a little more about the services that we provide to our patients and staffs. Having a hospital radio station provides our patients and their families with entertainment during their time with us and perhaps more importantly a means of letting people know they are thought about through the requests service the radio provides. There’s something really lovely about hearing your favorite tune and a dedication played over the airwaves – it really is there for people 24/7.

local community. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the radio station is a great example of a partnership between us and local people who really care about the NHS services they have on their doorstep. With developments in technology KGH Radio also has enormous potential to expand its reach and gain a wider audience beyond our hospital walls. A huge thank you to Steve, Ash, Wendy and all our KGH Radio Volunteers for their dedication to this important venture, our IT and estates team and of course the KGH Charity Fund for helping to make it real.

Our patients really appreciate the opportunity to evoke happy memories, mark special moments or thank the staff treating them by having their request played on air. KGH Radio also gives us another route to keep in touch with our

The Importance of Hospital Radio

lot of people might question the relevance of hospital radio when it comes to keeping us entertained but the truth is that other than the visiting hours, the hospital can be a very disorienting and a lonely place for people. Whatever category you are in a hospital environment whether a staff member, patient, volunteer or visitor there is a probability of becoming bored at a certain time throughout the day. Although in this technological era almost everyone has access to digital devices that are incorporated with a variety of choices like music, films, games and social networks. Now you could argue that the patient can simply keep themselves entertained with their digital devices, as the hospital has free WIFI. However, with these devices, there is no human interaction; meaning loneliness and boredom can creep in, that is where hospital radio comes in. According to the report analysis shown According to the report analysis shown by the Hospital Broadcasting Association, thebyHospital Broadcasting Association, “21% stationshave haveevidence evidencethat thatthey they “21% of of stations make patientfeel feellike likean anindividual’’. individual’’. make thethe patient Sean Dunderdale, media manager for the Hospital Broadcasting Association, also

affirms that hospital radio is still relevant and provides something that is missing in commercial radio. He said: “It“Itisisthe is is about, theessence essenceofofwhat whatradio radio about, being a public service, offering a more being a public service, offering a more personal ForFor personalconnection connectionwith withlisteners. listeners. people areare in the on their peoplewho who in hospital the hospital onown their with no visitors, the radio is like a friend.” own with no visitors, the radio is like a Therefore, radioHospital is about engaging friend.” Hospital Therefore, Radio is with you, the patients. about engaging with you, the patients. What makes Hospital Radio unique then? Well, from the perspective of a volunteer, I would say the most distinct thing about KGH Hospital Radio is that it is more than just a means of entertainment. It is more about interacting with the patients and staff. Building one to one relationships with the listeners and concentrating on their personality by letting the patients request their choices of songs makes a positive impact on their wellbeing. Just chatting with the volunteers can help the patients get their minds off their pains and aches which can help improve their physical and mental wellbeing. So, without any hesitation, why not request your favourite song now? You can listen to KGH 24 hours a day, 7-days a week and feel more connected.

WELCOME FROM KGH RADIO’S CHAIRMAN

W

ell, here we are, 2020 in another decade and welcome to this special launch edition of the KGH Radio magazine.

I am Steve Bellamy and I host a live request show on Tuesday from 17- 19:00 hours. I have always had an interest in music and many, many years ago when I left school I would have loved to have followed a career in radio, but in the dark days of the late sixties, the opportunities were very limited for a shy lad from Northamptonshire, especially when my parents told me to get a proper job. Anyway, not to be completely discouraged, I along with a couple of friends set up a mobile disco which we ran for ten years. (What sort of music genre do you play). Skip forward some years I saw an advert for the ‘old hospital radio’ and passing the audition I found myself on the air right up to its demise in 2018.

Steve Bellamy Times change and opportunities come up and so I now find myself back behind the microphone with a range of shows, both live and pre-recorded. Musically the oldest track I have played recently dates from the 1930’s, but mainly the tunes span the years 1960 to 2020. You can always tune in to the pre-recorded programme series called ‘My favorite album track’ any day of the week! And lastly, I want to take this opportunity in thanking each and everyone of our advertisers for their supprt with our magazine, which provides essential funding for us to provide the free hospital radio service.

This unusual programming format was a great educational tool as it exposed me to a myriad of musical tastes and expressions! During my senior year at the University of Tennessee, I interned at two radio stations in Knoxville WNOX, which was Top 40, and then WROL known as W-149, which was AOR (album-oriented rock).

Catch Bruce on KGH Radio every Wednesday from 18:00

A brief background on how I started my presenting career

M

y broadcast genesis goes way back to summer, 1974! At the time, I was going to summer school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and was inbetween my junior and senior years at university. My first job in broadcasting was as a disc jockey announcer and a presenter at WLIL-AM & FM radio stations in Lenoir City, Tennessee, USA. WLIL, had quite a unique weekend music format! On Saturdays, I worked from 12noon to 6 pm which was split into three 2-hour music blocks, noon to 2 pm was country & western, 2 to 4 pm was Top 40, and 4 to 6pm was gospel music.

10

After graduating from college, I moved back home to Birmingham, Alabama, USA where I also worked as an announcer at WCRT-AM and WQEZ-FM from 1976 to 1980. As the call letters of the FM station imply, the music format here was pop and easy listening. After previously working at a hard rock station, I like to say, “I went from Frank Zappa to Frank Sinatra!” How I joined, KGHR For about 25 years, I worked in broadcast engineering. I was behind the scenes as a transmission controller at various television broadcast facilities. But I missed being behind the microphone and spinning the records. So, when I discovered that Kettering Hospital Radio was looking for new volunteers, I felt this would be an excellent fit for me and KHR! In August 2007, I had my initial interview with Wally Valentine to become a presenter in Kettering General Hospital Radio. Generally, I’m at the age now that I despise job interviews; but, my meeting with Mr Valentine was most agreeable, it was laid-back, easy-going, and engaging!

If you have seen this, so have your potential customers!

Wally welcomed me on board to be a volunteer D.J for KHR, whilst training as a presenter during the fall months of 2007.

Of course, that means The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors and The Moody Blues.

I officially started presenting in January 2008. I began my weekly time-slot of Wednesday nights 7 to 8:30pm. This continued for the next 10 and a half years!

Strangely enough, I often begin my show each week by apologizing to my in-house hospital patients/listeners for tuning in to KGH Radio. That’s because I don’t think anyone enjoys a stay at the hospital!

Sadly though, there followed the demise of the old Kettering Hospital Radio in September 2018. Then a small team of dedicated volunteers, spearheaded by Steve Bellamy and Wendy Scott ensured to get the hospital radio station back on the air, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, all-new Kettering General Hospital Radio debuted in December 2019! My show on KGHR My regular weekly time-slot on KGH Radio is Wednesday nights, 6 to 8pm. I call my show, “The American Voice in the American Zone.” The reason for that lovely title becomes immediately apparent once you hear me speak!

Still, though, I like to think that KGHR is a great outlet for patients at KGH to make their hospital stay a little more tolerable with our mix of music and banter. And after your discharge from the hospital, please continue to tune in to KGHR at home on the internet via our web site: www.kghradio.co.uk. All of us at KGHR are so pleased that we are back in operation and on the air. And we most certainly appreciate everyone’s continued support of Kettering General Hospital Radio!!!

You will instantly notice my American accent, and if you’re good at detecting regional American accents, you’ll notice I am from the “Deep South” in the United States. No, I don’t necessarily sound like Forrest Gump; but, at times, you will hear a good ol’ Southern twang in there! My musical tastes are quite varied. I enjoy Rock, Jazz, and Rhythm & Blues. Country & Western brings out the good ol’ Southern boy in me. Show Tunes, Classical, and Easy Listening always are soothing for the soul. But my favourite has got to be the music of my youth classic Rock & Roll from the ’60s and ’70s!

For me, it’s all about musical nourishment that comes from the broad church of music, I love all sorts of genres and music, from Art, Punk, Indie, Northern Soul, Motown, Dub, 2 Tone Reggae, Blues, Acid Jazz, R & B Soul, D&B, 2 Step Electro, Hardcore, Dance, Rock, Hip Hop and World Music. i, I am James Garner and I host the Saturday show from 19 - 20:00 hours.

How I joined KGHR I have been involved with a local community radio station for over 3 years and I wanted to use some of that experience with another radio station. I made contact with KGH Radio by e-mail at the beginning of June 2020 and got through the initiation process within 3 weeks. As with every radio show, which is a huge amount of fun, the challenge is selecting music for the show’s audience, the sort of music that jumps out of the speakers and shakes hands with your ears! At the moment my initial shows are a ‘getting to know each other’ process but I like to think that the show will become

I feel very privileged to have people’s attention, where effectively I treat the show like I am having a chat with my friends in the pub listening to music. As the shows are interactive, it is a great way to share new music and artists with other people that have a passion for music and vice versa.

i, I used to be a radio presenter with the old Kettering hospital radio team before it closed, but I rejoined this year.

It’s been great to get back, I have missed playing great music for the patients and staff. It has also been interesting using our updated equipment. My show is called ‘I request show’! LIVE on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 till 9 o’clock in the evening. So if you want a request for anyone, just drop us a line or contact us?

I like a challenge and became quite excited at joining the station – this is a totally new direction for me. I’ve never done this kind of thing before and have really enjoyed it.

I also want to play local bands or artists, as we get into the new norm. As you can see, it’s still evolving. Any genre you would like to request, although it all depends if we’ve got it in the radio library. I personally have a broad church in music. I like all types of popular music. Rock. soul, blues, jazz, and classical, the list is never-ending. What I like the most about KGHR is the potential, we could become the heart of the hospital, giving information on the news? Becoming a community radio station? Showing the community, the hospital really in the community!

i, I am David Nicol. I joined the radio station in September 2019 and it has been a lovely experience for me.

I went to a volunteers induction event at KGH. Steve Bellamy was there and talked about the Radio Station and how it was being re-started. It’s a great team to belong to and Steve, Wendy and co are very supportive. I love the team spirit and the learning curve too. My favorite music is soul, northern soul, reggae and the blues. I have done a few programmes specific to each music genre and on my show, I try to be interesting and to deliver facts about the music that I play. So, if you are interested in learning more about different music genre stay tuned!

i, I’m Peter Clawson. I present the Monday Evening show from 20- 22:00 hours. I first became interested in radio in the 1970’s when I discovered Radio Northsea International. A Pirate Station which broadcast from a ship, the Mebo 2 anchored as the name would suggest in the North Sea. I have always liked my music and worked as a mobile DJ at weekends. My favorite choices of music are the ’60s and ’70s. My favorite bands were Creedence Clearwater Revival and Slade plus I love Motown and Northern soul. I have been involved in Radio Nene Valley at Northampton General Hospital presenting an assortment of shows, including radio bingo on Saturday afternoons, request shows, as well as hosting some live shows from the Derngate Theatre in Northampton. Then I joined the old KGHR family until it closed in September 2018. Afterwards, I had an interest in following Rusden and Diamonds Football Club and when they advertised for presenters to work on Radio Diamonds I jumped at the chance

and after a while, I became the radio station manager for 2 years. I am excited to join the new Kettering Hospital Radio Station now that it’s reopened. I enjoy sorting out the music and content for my Monday night show, providing good music and a friendly voice to the patients/ listeners. I hope to present more shows with KGH Radio over the coming months, so make sure you stay tuned as you can always be guaranteed some great songs on my show.

i, I’m Temenu Franca, a reporter and news presenter for KGH Radio.

I have always had a keen interest in becoming a journalist and the opportunity came up in college to apply to KGHR as a volunteer. I was so excited about it as I know for a fact that this would be a great start for my career and also an opportunity for me to give back to my local community. So far, joining KGHR has been amazing but at first, it was nerve-racking, but the amazing volunteers at KGHR are so welcoming that they made it very easy for me to adjust to my new role. Though I had previously volunteered for my local art and heritage gallery, I knew volunteering as a reporter for a hospital radio station would be a whole different experience. I am loving my role as I get to conduct interviews, write articles, edit written

I believe my show will stand out and connect to people. The best thing I like about KGHR is the opportunity to meet and work with amazing people every time.

oining KGHR has been something I’ve been thinking about for a while and always put it off, never quite thinking I would be good enough. Then the pandemic came along and changed the way I saw the world! I wanted to give something back to KGH, which has been there for me and my family so many times in recent years, and COVID made me want to make people who’ve given so much the chance to have a little smile. So, having read an article about KGHR in the KGH Together magazine I googled it, and sent an email and I finally joined KGHR in May of 2020! So far, it’s been an exciting lead-up and I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous too. The best thing I like about KGHR is obviously going to be the idea that in my own small way I’m helping people, be it the patients or staff, and that I’m giving something back. Rather selfishly it’s also something different and new for me, and a world away from my current job, so it’ll be a relaxing break! I

am due to start my show soon and I’m sure the first few shows will be ‘interesting’ to say the least! I’m really hoping that my show offers something for everyone, to the person who’s in KGH and missing home, to the person who is almost ready to head home, to the staff that needs to know that we all care about them and are thankful for what they’re doing. The aim is for my show to be an enormous hug or a cuppa and a chat with anyone who needs it. Plus they’ll be some pretty good music along the way too that will make people smile, laugh, sing along and also pause and reflect. So stay tuned!

Catch Wendy on KGH Radio every Friday evening from 18:00

H

i, I’m Wendy Scott. I host the Friday evening show from 18- 20:00 hours.

How did you join KGHR? I got to know about KGH Hospital Radio when I was looking at the charity board in Kettering’s Tesco and I spotted a section of the ad that caught my eye asking for volunteers for KGH’s Hospital Radio. I’d recently started working from home and realised that I needed to do something new. I was a regular podcaster and knew that joining hospital radio would be a new challenge and something fun to do. What is your favorite music Artist? I don’t have a favorite artist; I generally have an eclectic taste which spans across quite a number of musical genres. Though, I am a particular fan of original film scores, The music of the late James Horner, John Williams and Michael Giacchino are my particular favorites. As you may guess, I love film and I am a regular cinema attendee.

I’ve been an in-patient of KGH on a couple of occasions and I understand how invaluable being able to listen to the radio can be. That is why I thoroughly enjoy being able to help the patients and staff at KGH through their days. What to expect on my show My show is like my iPod and will happily play Oasis, Rhiannon Giddens, Michael Lee Aday (Meat Loaf), and Bruce Springsteen. I’m extremely proud to be a Trustee of KGH Radio.

TOP TIPS WHEN YOU’RE DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

C

oming into hospital can be a daunting experience and we understand that for most patients and family members it can be a very anxious time.

So, the hospital will look after you and make it as stress free as they can. During your admission, the doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists will monitor your progress and recovery on a daily basis.

summary, which will be sent to your GP to inform them of what has occurred during your stay. Don’t be afraid of asking staff to go through the care plan again and explain anything you might not understand or is unclear. We would rather you asked and were completely clear before you got home, especially about medication which is so important. • You might be able to be discharged straight to your own home. • Some patients have more complex needs and may require further inpatient care in a community hospital. • Others might need social care support at home which may include carers who assist with washing, dressing and toileting – this is known as a package of care. • While others may need short-term physio or occupational therapy input in their home or in a care home. This is known as intermediate care. • A few may need a placement in a residential or nursing home setting.

The decision that you are well enough to leave hospital may came at very short notice, so it is important to discuss any discharge concerns you may have with the team as soon as you are able to and be as prepared and ready when the time comes. Things to think about are how you will get home or where you might be staying or who with while you recover. You might be feeling much better when it comes to leaving hospital, but all the daily domestic tasks you did without any difficulty before hospital, could well be impossible until you are feeling fit and well again – so maybe you will have to enlist some help ahead of time? For the majority, the discharge process will be fairly straightforward. Once you are informed that you are ready to leave hospital you can telephone your relatives, or friends and carers to collect you that day.

The hospital discharge coordinator assigned to your ward and the hospital Complex Discharge Team (consisting of nurses and social workers) will organise these alternative different ways of being discharged. Also, don’t forget to ensure you or your family or carers know who to call if you need help, will it be the hospital ward or your GP?

You will be provided with a supply of any new medication and information, called a care plan

Can You Help Us?

K

GH Radio is a new registered charity (Charity Number 1188017). We officially launched on 27th January 2020. We receive only money we raise ourselves. With running costs of over £3,000 p.a, it is to say the least, an ongoing challenge. We rely on fundraising and donations from local businesses to help us continue broadcasting to the Kettering General Hospital and community, and while the support of these businesses and of the general public are very gratefully received, it never seems quite enough. There are plenty of opportunities you can help, you could perhaps place an advert in this very magazine you are reading or by sponsoring one of our radio programs. It works out an extremely efficient and economical way of marketing and also

24

makes you feel good about yourself and your business too. Maybe you’ve got a few CD’s that you hide when friends come around? Stop hiding them and give them to us! People are always requesting ‘interesting’ tracks shall we say and it could be that by donating a CD, or ten you are cheering someone up during their hospital stay by helping KGH Radio have the song they want to hear in our library. If you can support KGH Radio in any way, or would like further information contact one of our dedicated fundraising team, John on 07970 744 980 or David on 07341 857 460, or by emailing admin@ kghradio.co.uk putting ‘Fund raising’ in the subject.
