BIGGER, BETTER, SHOW Noosa’s annual celebration of everything rural, the Noosa Country Show, will be staged at the Pomona Showground on Friday and Saturday 12-13 September and will include what new show society president, Keith Haining says will be a ‘blockbuster’ variety of endless entertainment. Community involvement is at the heart of the revamped show under a new committee. Privately, organisers are planning for an attendance twice that of last year. “Thanks to our fantastic community we’ve been able to put on a new horse schedule, with harness classes, a new ridden show mount ring, a new stud beef schedule, an art exhibition and workshops, and it goes on!” Keith said.

The Noosa Country Show is noted for its small, but impressive, dairy and beef cattle sections. One of the highlights of the show is the junior handler section (above). Also popular is the wood-chopping events, which attract axe men from throughout South East Queensland (right). This year the Show Society has stepped up the attractions and sideshow alley amusements to cater to a younger audience (bottom right). The entertainment also includes traditional favourites such as fireworks and a Honky Tonk Rodeo.

“We’ve gone for more action this year, including a tennis expo, a laser attack attraction, mower races and monster trucks. The Friday night fireworks and Honky Tonk Rodeo on Saturday evening are again part of the line-up. Stage events include Angry Anderson and the Allstar band on Friday. Top local coverband, Smokin Mirrors, and a burlesque show will follow the Honky Tonk Rodeo on Saturday. For the children there will be The Sillibillies, the Kangagang Buck a Roo Show and the Memphis Moovers. The animal nursery, sheep shearing and reptile show will be among the favourites. Keith says the show, now in its 105th year, will be a major celebration of a brand new Noosa Shire. Ticket prices are cheap, at $15 per adult, $10 for concession cardholders and free entry for children under 5. For families, a day’s entertainment costs $35; or $45 entry for both days. An exhibitor’s pass costs $10 for both days. The show society will accept applications for trade sites up until 31 August, phone 5485 2671 for details. Meanwhile, the Wildcare Australia’s Miss Noosa Showgirl and Rural Ambassador fundraiser competition was held at the King of the Mountain Festival. Coverage of the Show Ball, held at the Pomona Memorial School of Arts Hall on 2 August, will be in September’s Cooroora Connect.
