Big crowd expected for mountain race It’s Pomona’s big day of the year! The annual Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival and its gruelling signature race, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge up Mount Cooroora, will be staged on Sunday 27 July. New events and increased sponsorship are expected to attract up to 15,000 people on the day. For Pomona’s sporting and community groups, the King of the Mountain Festival is a major fund-raising activity for the year – so get right behind them!

Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge attracts professional field It has inspired a popular song and generations of runners of all ages and level of fitness to become the cherished showcase event of the Noosa Hinterland that, once again, will draw more than 10,000 people to the Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, to be held at Pomona on Sunday 27 July.

The 4.2km endurance run up and down Mount Cooroora, known as the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, is the climax event of a largely free day of entertainment for all the family. One hundred runners will contest the event, including several from New Zealand, as they seek to better the record 22min. 43sec. time set

by Neil Labinsky, a seven times winner of the King of the Mountain race. Neil ran third last year, behind the heels of the eventual winner, Ben Duffus, a 21year-old university student.

Pomona Hall becomes ‘antiques central’ for one weekend a year With several permanent retail outlets selling antiques and memorabilia, Pomona is fast becoming a haunt for treasure-hunters and collectors.

Rugfest event brings joy to participants and hope to homeless It won’t quite be a case of rugs-a-million, but rugs aplenty when the fifth annual Rugfest gets underway at the Pomona Memorial Hall on Saturday, 19 July, starting at 11am. It becomes the second event in a season of activities for the town, followed in September by the Noosa Country Show and the Great Noosa Trail Walk in October.

Held originally at the Tewantin Catholic Parish Hall, Rugfest had to be moved last year to the more spacious Pomona Hall. It proved a wise move, as the event attracted a maximum seated capacity of 200 people who viewed the magnificent hand-made rugs hung around the hall and then sat down to a winter luncheon of homemade soup and crusty bread.

As well as raising more than $5000 through the raffle of 40 woollen knee rugs and

‘waggas’, the day generated fellowship and attention to the plight of our region’s poor and homeless. Money raised helped fund the Winter Appeal activities of Noosa St Vincent de Paul.

As was the case last year, this year’s Rugfest raffle items have been constructed using recycled woollen garments and donated fabric.

“Following last year’s event, we had several donations of woollen clothing and material from people, very happy to see their no longer worn garments ‘upcycled’ into beautiful and useful rugs,” said Brenda Carlos, the Rugfest coordinator.

Pomona Meals on Wheels, which provides essential service for the districts elderly receives $4776.

Noosa Lancare has a $25,000 grant to support its environmental activities.

Pomona school one of Noosa Council’s shining STARS It was a proud day for the students, staff and parents at Pomona State School when Councillor Joe Jurisevic visited recently.

He presented the school with a Certificate of Achievement for the Council's STARS program undertaken by the students at the school.

Noosa Council sponsors a waste education program called the STARS program which teaches kindergarten, primary and secondary school students the importance of reducing waste and the best methods for recycling various materials.

Other local schools and childcare centres have also signed up for the STARS program and all are making excellent progress in reducing waste and increasing recycling.

Councillor Jurisevic praised the school's efforts congratulating the entire school community on a fantastic waste reduction result.

“The challenge ahead is for students to take this great attitude about reducing waste with them into high school and into the rest of their lives. Fire station to take on expanded role as regional training centre Pomona’s $1.8 million modern new fire station, now under construction, will have a role beyond just housing QFES auxiliary staff for callouts to local fires, the State Member for Gympie, David Gibson, has revealed.

“Not only will it serve as Pomona’s new fire station, the building will house facilities for surrounding fire and rescue crews, from across the Noosa hinterland, to meet and train together,” Mr Gibson said. The new fire station sits adjacent to the Pomona ambulance station in Reserve Street.

“Co-location of all emergency services for the town is in keeping with government policy to obtain maximum operational efficiencies from placing ambulance, fire and rescue services together,” Mr Gibson said.

“The Pomona community has already put forward some ideas on the facade and appearance of the new building, which has potential to become a prominent architecture feature of the town.” The new emergency services precinct, including a spruced-up ambulance station, is due to open early in 2015.

Road closures for Wimmers King of The Mountain Festival The 36th annual Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival at Pomona is being held on Sunday 27 July and, as per previous years, will include the following street closures: Reserve Street between School Street and the eastern side of the railway crossing, from 6am to 5.30pm.

Boost for Noosa Country Show art exhibition With preparation underway for the Noosa Country Show in September, the show’s arts exhibition has been boosted with more prize money and additional categories.

According to art steward, Sandra FoxSpencer, the inspiration for this year’s art spectacular is The Embrace of Noosa and what makes it unique. “Inspired by the theme of this year’s show, ‘the celebration of Noosa Shire’ three creative concepts have been devised.

She has been practising karate at the local JKA Pomona dojo since she was six years old. This is the fourth year that she has been part of the Queensland Karate team.
