Celebrating special new mural for Mens’s Shed Pomona

By Doug Bettens, President, Men’s Shed Pomona Saturday 19th November saw the official handover of a special mural painted by artist Dennis Sussmilch to fellow members of the Men’s Shed Pomona.

The mural project came out of a discussion in August this year where the human values of the Shed were discussed.

During the discussions the offer of the mural was made and all the members agreed that it was a worthwhile project to undertake.

A scale of the project was later produced for member’s consideration and an amount of money was set aside for the works.

Dennis proceeded with the project and each week we saw the mural evolve.

Towards the end of the project the site in front of the mural was cleaned up, pavers installed and the area grassed. It was a fantastic effort by the members giving support to Dennis and an acknowledgement of his effort.

New funding boost for Pomona Community House Pomona Community House is very pleased to announce a major funding increase from the Queensland Government Department of Communities.

Under generous new funding arrangements with the Department of Communities, the Queensland Government has recognised the valuable role that neighbourhood centres play in providing universal services for the more vulnerable members of the community.

To ensure neighbourhood centres can operate fulltime on a sustainable basis, minimum funding levels have been established for centres across Queensland.

The Pomona & District Community House is one of 43 neighbourhood centres across the state that will receive additional funding bringing them in line with other community centres on the Sunshine Coast such as Caloundra, Maleny, Nambour and Maroochydore.

In announcing the funding boost, Communities Minister, Shannon Fentiman said, “Neighbourhood centres are the backbone of our community…these hubs play such a vital role in providing people with access to information, advice, workshops, local events, counselling and support.”

Eighth straight dividend for Community Bank shareholders The global economic challenges continue, but it’s a far different story for investors in three of the coast’s Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank. In fact it’s a continuing celebration of a real home-grown Sunshine Coast success story.

Noosa’s finest battle it out for debating title The school year may be drawing to a close but great young minds have been hard at work at our local state schools these past few weeks. Donated patient hoist lifts spirits at Cooroy rehabilitation centre

The fund-raising efforts of the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club has resulted in the donation of a patient hoist, used in lifting people undergoing recovery at the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, Cooroy.

A past patient at the hospital wrote to Lions Club president Vicki Dessaix, explaining a need for another hoist at the hospital, prompting Vicki to declare the task a ‘president’s project’ (large project), and requiring a strong effort by the small club membership.

As a nurse, Vicki thought the project worthy. She submitted a grant application to the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF), which agreed it was a perfect candidate project for funding.

The ALF donated half the cost, which the Cooroy-Pomona Lions matched.

The club also donated a recliner chair, which is used for pressure sore prevention.

Indirectly, the local community contributed to the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club fundraising efforts through their support at Lions stalls at market days, the King of the Mountain and Pomona in the Park.

For Eden, the timing of the donation was perfect. The centre needed a replacement hoist. Eden bought

The goal of Lions Club is to ‘serve the public’. The Eden donation, therefore, was a great fit.

Pomona runners great ambassadors in NZ

It took an all-time best run by a Kiwi athlete to edge out Pomona King of the Mountain two-time winner Ben Duffus in the gruelling race on New Zealand’s Mt Edgecombe on 29 October. Held at Kawerau on the North Island of New Zealand, the chase up and down 820m-high Mt Edgecombe is the sister event to Pomona’s big mountain race held annually in July. Duffus won the NZ event in 2015.

Two-time winner at Kawerau, Shay Williamson ran an amazing race to win this year and, in doing so, broke the record set in 1988 by NZ champion Barry Prosser. Williamson lowered the best-ever Mt Edgecombe challenge time by 23 seconds to 45:31. Another familiar face at Pomona, Mark Bourne, finished fourth. Bourne, from Canberra, won this year’s King of the Mountain event.

New Zealand’s sub 60-minutes race time is similar to a sub-30 minute run at Pomona and is an outstanding effort by any runner who can break into that elite group.

Pomona had four runners break into that sub 60 club.

Kawerau’s race director Lee Barton commented on the overall strength of the top runners in this year’s race and stated that it was the outstanding strength of Pomona’s team that brought together the strongest New Zealand competitors to make the 2016 race the best for some years.

He made the trip across The Ditch to experience the tough ascent of Mt Edgecombe.

Edgecombe race is over a longer 7.8klm course and up the 820 meter high Mt Edgecombe with its loose volcanic scoria footing. The two races are very different but each has its own toughness and they are two of the toughest mountain races.

More than four tonnes of e-waste diverted from landfill Noosa residents dropped off more than four tonnes of e-waste in two days at Council’s National Recycling Week collection point.

“That’s four tonnes of material diverted from landfill, which is a great result,” says Waste Education Officer Emma Menzies.

Recycling, rather than dumping, ewaste helps keep lead, mercury, and other hazardous material out of the environment.

Ms Menzies said many residents who dropped items off at the twoday collection site didn’t realise Council accepted e-waste for recycling, free of charge.

Council intends to maintain the ewaste service in the future.

Residents filled eight large wire cages with old televisions, computers, printers, scanners and other IT equipment at the National Recycling Week drop-off.

“Used electronic equipment contains finite resources such as copper, aluminium, nickel and zinc.

Plastic from old electronic equipment is recycled into new furniture and plant pots.

Recycling your e-waste ensures these resources are reused,” Ms Menzies said.

Apply now for RADF grants Council is accepting applications for the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants.

The Christmas FREE Holiday Buses are just a few weeks away!

Artists, art groups and other not-for-profit organisations have until 21 December to submit a brief pitch, the initial step in the application process.

RADF provides one-off financial assistance to eligible groups and individuals for a wide range of arts and cultural projects.

Noosa’s RADF Committee Chair, Cr Jess Glasgow, said artists and organisations planning to apply should contact Council’s grants team for advice about submitting a pitch.

“RADF is one of the ways Council supports local arts and cultural development which is a key responsibility outlined in our social strategy,” Cr Glasgow said.

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and councils to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Council matches the state’s funding 50/50.

“It’s a very successful partnership. Since 2014 the RADF program has provided more than $100,000 to assist more than 20 local creative projects,” Cr Glasgow said.

The RADF committee will consider each pitch and shortlist applicants in January. Council will then invite shortlisted applicants to submit a full application.

Council RADF Liaison Officer Belinda Simonsen said any groups considering applying have until 21 December to submit a pitch.

“We are happy to talk with applicants to discuss eligibility and timeframes, plus answer any other questions they have,” she said.

The next stage will be full project design, a QR spokesperson said.

While not part of the station upgrade, the future of the cross-town pedestrian pathway across the North Coast Line, via the station, remains in doubt, with QR seeking to call a public meeting next year where options, including closure, will be on the table. The meeting will test community objections and views.

Talks have begun, involving a local artist and the Pomona State School, to paint the existing concrete block equipment shed with a mural in order to reduce its visual impact. The station area will be landscaped, including a row of trees along the entrance driveway, and new signage erected. One idea is for a plaque detailing the station history, similar to the plaque outside the new fire station.

Should the path be closed, the path users would be forced to detour to the Reserve Street level crossing.

The current path is an ‘historic link’ according to Noosa Council. It forms part of the Noosa Trail Network through Pomona and connects the Majestic Theatre with the town centre.

Combined Hinterland State Schools Band were the opening act for Pomona In The Park.

Held under the starry skies of Stan Topper Park the Pomona Community gathered again for this years Pomona In The Park, one of the most talked about activities in the local calendar.

The 2016 event was bigger than ever according to Pomona State School Deputy Principal, Barbara Harch and it was all about the costumes and the great music.

Over 30o students participated in this years event and the performances were magical.

Dance and music acts included Funk Town, Welcome To The Jungle, Chapel Of Love, it’s a Small World, AC/DC Rock, Ghost Busters and many more popular tunes.

The highlight of the evening was the graduating class of 2016 taking centre stage and dancing up a storm and counting down to the massive fireworks display.

A special thankyou to all the teachers, parents and local businesses who supported our major school fundraiser.

Action to address homelessness in our community

Mobile shower for Pomona and more emergency housing Not having access to access to facilities for washing and showering is one of the hardest things for homeless people to deal with.

The Pomona & District Community house is thrilled to announce that through the goodwill of Unitywater and the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre Inc. we will have a free mobile shower for the homeless and those in need in our community available throughout December and into the New Year.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Housing and Public Works, Mick de Brenni, has advised of state government investment to non government organisations to deliver homelessness services at seven locations on sunshine coast and three in the Noosa area.

Unitywater have purchased this mobile shower for the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, as a ‘roving’ mobile shower to be used throughout the Sunshine Coast Region, and the first port of call will be Pomona.

The Community House will partner with Living Hope op shop, Options 4 U, to deliver this fantastic amenity.

The shower will be based at Pomona Community House/Options 4 U. Once installed the shower will be available during Options 4 U hours, Monday – Friday 9.00am – 4.00pm and Saturday 9.00am – midday.

The Hinterland Belles a new red hat chapter Announcing the “Hinterland Lady Belles”, a new Red Hat chapter started in the Pomona-Gympie area.

The Red Hat Society is a social club for women over 50 (but younger women can join too – they’re “Pinkies”). Red Hatting is about fun, friendship and frivolity. Now that we women are matured to perfection and fabulous, we want to stand out in the crowd and be seen and recognised and above all HAVE FUN and friendship with other likeminded women.

“Our group plans to explore the Mary Valley and Noosa hinterland, combining walks or visits to natural scenic spots with morning tea and lunches at local cafes/restaurants.

Christmas Star Recipe Equipment  6cm star cutter Ingredients  250g Western Star Original Salted Butter, at room temperature



1/3 cup (75g) caster sugar



Red food colouring



2 1/3 cups (350g) plain flour



80g Western Star Original Salted Butter,extra, at room temperature



3/4 cup (120g) icing sugar



Icing sugar, extra, to dust

Step 3 Roll out 1 dough portion between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Use a 6cm star cutter to cut out stars, re-rolling when necessary. Repeat with remaining dough portion. Place on the lined trays. Bake for 15 mins or until golden underneath. Cool on trays for 5 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 4 Use an electric mixer to beat extra butter and icing sugar until pale and creamy. Divide the icing in half. Add a few drops of red food colouring to 1 portion and combine. Place in separate small piping bags fitted with a small star nozzle. Pipe white icing onto half the red biscuits. Top with the remaining red biscuits. Repeat with red icing and plain biscuits. Dust lightly with extra icing sugar

Step 1 Preheat oven to 170C. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and caster sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Divide mixture in half. Add a few drops of red food colouring to 1 portion and mix well.

Step 2 Divide the flour between the portions and use a non-serrated knife in a cutting motion to mix until a soft dough forms. Bring each dough together and flatten into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 15 mins or until firm enough to roll.

Pomona Pacers – Your Local Heart Foundation Walking Group It has been a tremendous year for the Pomona Pacers enjoying many local walks, field excursions as well as lots of social gatherings.

Over the warmer months and during the business holiday season there are fewer field excursions scheduled and we will be having a Christmas shutdown period. We will not be walking from Monday 26th December to Monday 2nd January (inclusive).

One highlight of the year has been getting to know the Tewantin Tickers and enjoying their company on our 6th birthday, exploring the Noosa North Shore together and we are looking forward to our upcoming Christmas brunch with them on the shores of the beautiful Lake McDonald.

Another warm memory of 2016 we have is our first weekend away together. Over the weekend of 18-20 November a group of 14 of us headed off to the beautiful Bunya Mountains (past Kingaroy). We enjoyed walking in the stunning rainforest and admired the old growth forests. The

Bunya Mountains are home to the largest natural Bunya pine forest in the world. This very special place is only a few hours drive from Pomona and well worth a visit.

The Pomona Pacers meet every morning in front of Pomona Community House Monday to Friday (except public holidays). Current meeting time is 6:30 am. Be prepared to walk for around 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk pace.

If you are thinking of joining the group, it is recommended that you ring to confirm arrangements We also enjoyed a delightful lunch at especially over the holiday season.
