Vale Robyn Jones, community stalwart Tribute by Jackie Bazzo

Robyn was sharp, tough, witty, hard -working and tenacious, even in the face of adversity. Few can deny her many contributions and there is no doubt that her legacy in Pomona will endure for many years to come.

On behalf of all of the current and previous volunteers of Pomona Arts Inc. Undertaking volunteer work is generally motivated by one’s desire to make a positive difference to their community. Sadly, last month Ms. Robyn Jones, a woman who voluntarily contributed much to the ongoing support of the Arts within our community, passed away peacefully.

As a founder of our not-for-profit community incorporation, Robyn is credited for her role in establishing the Pomona Railway Station Gallery after securing the discarded Pomona platform buildings from Queensland Rail, and for retaining community ownership of the Majestic Theatre after working tirelessly to secure a record grant for the vital funding of its restoration.

These remarkable achievements were achieved over two decades as a result of an ongoing collaborative partnership between Noosa Council and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the Qld Government and the Federal Government. Robyn’s demonstrated passion for the project also attracted the significant contributions of many members of the local community and businesses who rallied behind her to see the iconic theatre restored.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.

This includes giving her full support to the installation and restoration of an 80 year old English John Compton Theatre Organ, originally built for the Regal Theatre in Chester UK. One of only three in Queensland, the organ has already attracted much interest from international performers and organ players and will ensure the heritagelisted theatre offers another special facet to give patrons a unique experience.

VISIT NOOSA OF SUMMERS PAST Noosa Shire Museum’s new policy of rotating displays and refreshing its presentation of objects according to themes begins with a new display titled Summer in Noosa Shire – Through the Ages which will be available to view until 28 February.

Working with the Operations and Development Officer, Anne Sutherland, volunteers have searched the museum collections for items that depict how Noosa summer life by beach and river has evolved over the years.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for people to view items that have been in storage and not on display to the public. Some of the pieces will be shown for the very first time,” Ms Sutherland said.

The Noosa Shire Museum is at Pomona, in Factory Street.

Majestic bringing back the magic Majestic Players are eager to start up a drama group. Looking for actors, directors, producers, stage prop makers, costume designers to get on board and be involved.

Splendour Under The Stars Splendour under the Stars presented by Australia's very own accomplished Opera singer Maggie Noonan and Cooran's own Emma Tomlinson is hosting a unique event at the Majestic Theatre’s Amphitheatre on Saturday, 16 December.

Relax under the starry sky as they deliver a mix of Italian Bel canto Opera, Broadway Musical Theatre Classics, Jazz & some original compositions written by Emma. A job well done

COORAN EARTH RIGHTS

by Helen Moffitt A small group can make powerful change. Less than six months ago, seven ordinary people joined together to form Cooran Earth Rights, a collective which now numbers over 200 members. With the main focus on protection of our environment from inappropriate mining, we have become an effective, organised working group of citizens.

The journey has been a fast-paced learning experience as we each begin to understand the processes of how mining in this country is conducted. From the discovery of the lack of public awareness of mining, to finding out about the direct misrepresentation undertaken by companies proposing to, or who currently conduct mining ventures.

Cooran Earth Rights work together to ensure that this region is safe from both coal and gas mining. We aim to extinguish the exploration permit for coal, and maintain awareness of other pending exploration and drilling permits that are currently in play. We can, and will carry out investigative tasks, and engage the wider community so that we are all informed to know how we can stand together to protect this beautiful region. As Anthropologist Margaret Mead said in 1960:

Over the years, Wendy has encouraged and coordinated hundreds of volunteers, with more than 40 active vollies currently dedicating their time and talents to ensure the smooth running of this great community asset.

Museum measures practices against national standards Museums and Galleries Queensland, the peak professional body for cultural institutions in the state, recently presented Noosa Shire Museum with a certificate of recognition for completing an intensive year-long program assessing the museum’s management and conservation practices against the National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries.

joined in the celebrations at the Caloundra Events Centre at a ceremony where the Noosa Museum’s achievement and that of similar institutions across the Coast were celebrated.

The assessment process involved a self-assessment and a series of reviews over a 12-month period, undertaken by professionals matched to each institution and its activities. The reviewers are industry experts who played a vital role in providing pro-bono advice and assistance throughout the program.

Great Things Come from Women Supporting Woman Young women have been gathering fortnightly at the Lawson Shed – Pomona Community House to connect with their peers in a creative, welcoming and nonjudgmental space.

This local girl gang decides what activities they want to do each session, which this term has included chalk concrete art, firing glitter cannons, a master chef style cook-off, skipping, henna body art, empowering beauty and self-care night and canvas free art.

“Young Woman Collective is unique every time and so inviting” The activities are great and the creativity and capability of the young women is amazing, however what this collective of strong young women is achieving is a lot more than art and crafts. Each week the relationships that are formed and developed are vital for young women to navigate the complexity of teenage life. The transition for many young people into adulthood can be challenging. In particular uncertainty around identity, sexuality, relationships and family structures can become overwhelming.

Opportunities for safe social connection outside of the home or school environment are one of the ways that young women can develop and share ways of making the transition into adulthood as smooth as possible for themselves, their families and community.

The women in this collective are problem-solving many serious issues that arise in their lives, and most importantly supporting each other to be resilient and skilled members of their families and community.

The group has been described by young women as providing a muchneeded break from family and school pressures, which has seen the

creation of new friendships and happiness.

The Pomona Young Woman Collective will run fortnightly during the first school term of 2018 and is open to any young woman between the age of 12-18 years from Pomona or surrounding districts.

Active sports program for teens Teenagers who say there is not enough to do in the hinterland are being called upon to provide input to a new Noosa Council program targeted at 13- to 17-year-olds eager to stay active.

“Statistics tell us that for numerous reasons, including study commitments, many teenagers aren’t getting enough exercise or physical activity,” said Noosa Council’s Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin.

The Active Teens Program, due to start next year, will offer 13- to 17year-olds easy access to low-cost activities to help them stay active.

“However, before the new program can begin, we need to find out the sorts of activities teenagers would take part in if made available at low cost,” Ms Hamblin said.

“We are calling for teenagers aged between 13 and 17 to jump online and fill out a quick survey.

Pomona Pacers walk their way to fitness November dinner at Noosa Marina Last month’s Moon Walk by the Pomona Pacers walking group was a pleasant riverside stroll in the late afternoon at Tewantin and Noosaville.

Noosa Marina was the venue for dinner, taken care of by Noosa Harbour Fish Market and Harbour Wine Bar (extra walks required after that!).

Groups of diners were out enjoying the warm evening, with the marina, its ferries and boats, looking lovely under lights.

Visit to Tewantin National Park The Near-Town Walk was conducted in Tewantin National Park, off Yurol Forest Drive. Despite showery weather in the days beforehand, the roads were surprisingly firm; a couple of large mudpuddles remained from the previous big wet.

Breast cancer fundraiser A contingent of Pomona Pacers joined with

members of Cooroy’s Golf Club and Probus Club, when Noosa River and Canal Cruises hosted a sunset river cruise fundraiser.

All revenue from ticket sales was donated to breast cancer research.

Enjoying drinks and nibbles, and the changing scenery from the vantage point of gliding along the river and canals, it was a very pleasant way to view the sunset and the lighting -up of Gympie Terrace.

Pomona Pacers is a friendly group that comes together to walk in company.

Pacers walk for around 60 minutes at a brisk pace on a variety of town routes and bush tracks, with regular coffee mornings, excursions, and “moon walks”.

The group meets outside Pomona Community House every weekday (except public holidays) at 7:00 am.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Get in the swim at Pomona pool The hot days of summer are a perfect time to cool off at the Pomona Public Pool, which has re-opened for general use, lap training and fitness classes, catering to all ages.

On weekdays, the pool opens from 5.30am to 8am, and from 3pm to 7pm.

If you are able to provide a few hours per week (or even once a month) - whether it be as a delivery driver, kitchen helper or office support – please contact the admin team at Pomona District Meals on Wheels 5485 1777. All training will be provided.

Swimmers will find the water inviting each Saturday between 8am and 10am, and between 2pm and 6pm Saturdays and Sundays.

The Meals on Wheels facility is located within the Pomona Memorial School of Arts Hall in Reserve Street. MOW Pomona operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with delivery runs to Pomona, Cooroy, Cooran, Eumundi and Boreen Point.

Single visits to the pool cost $4, but it’s cheaper to buy a 10 sessions pass for $35 or $90 for 30 sessions.

A full-season unlimited

Not so long ago a lot of communities proudly kept watch over their streets, reporting suspicious loitering and criminal activities which regularly resulted in timely arrests.

A while back we ran the Cooran consultative committee focussed primarily on juvenile safety and offence prevention which worked well and I submit, helped change a mindset in that community.

Folks, it frustrates us no end when doing a follow up investigation of offences when people say they heard and saw something a week ago but didn’t want to bother us or think it was worth reporting and no, they didn’t take the rego.

You know when something’s just not right and although no one likes a

busy body, it’s another thing entirely to report a suspicious vehicle or person at a neighbours property when they’re away on holidays or other suspect activity. Not looking for a community of narcs, just some old school ownership to keep you all that much safer and collar more crooks!

Stolen vehicle: Between 13th and 14th November, a white 1996 Nissan Patrol station wagon, QLD registration number 141TZB was stolen from the Pomona CBD. Vehicle was locked and parked outside a dwelling in Reserve street Pomona and stolen overnight.

The phone rings at Police headquarters.

'Hello?'

'Hello, is this Police?'

'Yes. What do you want?'

'I'm calling to report my neighbour Bill. He’s hiding marijuana in his firewood.'

'This will be investigated.'

Next day, the Police visit Bill's house and execute a search warrant. They search the shed where the firewood is kept, break every piece of wood, find no marijuana, curse Bill and leave.

The phone then rings at Bill's house.

'Hey, Bill! Did the cops come?'

'Yeah, they did.'

'Did they chop your firewood?'

'Yep, every piece.'

'Okay, now it's your turn to call. I need my garden dug.'
