Races for everyone at King of the Mountain

by Jackie Bazzo A project of The Cooroy and Pomona Lion’s Club, the annual King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of familyorientated attractions and event experiences. While Sunday 24 July marks the 38th anniversary of the gruelling Bendigo Bank ‘King of the Mountain Challenge’ race, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate.

This year Zinc 96.1 will sponsor the inaugural ‘Prince and Princess’ race on Saturday 23rd July.

Aimed at children aged 913, there are cash prizes up for grabs and medals and trophies. Featuring a shortened 3.4km course, the track will begin at the Pomona Lions Den, continue through the forest, to the base of the mountain, along the walking track connecting back to the forest track and finish at the Lions Den.

Participants are asked to assemble from 1pm with the race beginning at 2pm.

There will be a sausage sizzle with gold coin donations funding local Lions community projects.

There is no fee to enter. If you would like your child to participate, registration forms need to be completed and emailed to Jo Berridge by Thursday 14 July. The festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences. Competitors and spectators can look forward to another fun -filled event, which includes other family-friendly races, heritage markets, antiques fair, amusement rides, local cuisine and live music.

Festivities will begin early with the arrival of many different car clubs showing off their classic vehicles in the lead-up to the big race at 2.30pm. Celebrations will continue afterwards and into the evening with live music and free entertainment.

As a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to serving and supporting the local community, fund-raising is an important part of the day and all race entry fees go towards helping the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club community projects.

Meeting discusses new railway station design Queensland Rail (QR) officials met with representatives of several community groups late last month to discuss the design of Pomona’s new railway station, with an overwhelming desire expressed that the new platform and buildings fit with the town’s existing character and architecture. Noosa Council design staff also attended the meeting.

The new $1 million railway station is expected to be open in early 2017 and is one of three station refurbishments planned for towns north of Nambour; the others being at Eumundi and Cooran. The designs have not been completed, with the QR project team saying they first want to hear community views before embarking on the planning stage. Each station will be closed for approximately six weeks while construction proceeds.

At Pomona, the community representatives were told that the current unsightly temporary scaffold and plywood platform would be replaced by a permanent steel web support frame anchored to concrete pads and topped with pre-cast concrete slabs. The level of the platform will be raised, closer to the height of a passenger train carriage, a new passenger shelter will be built, the public telephone retained and new electronic go-card readers installed.

The government officials listened as locals expressed a desire that the station precinct be landscaped, the cross-town pathway via the railway station retained, and new signage installed. It is likely that Pomona State School students will be involved in painting a mural on one wall of the concrete block building housing railway equipment at the station. This will soften the appearance of the structure.

Flooding issues associated with the station site were discussed also.

The meeting to discuss Pomona’s new railway station involved representative from Qld Rail, various community groups and two planning staff from Noosa Council.

Following the meeting the rail officials walked the town and visited the Old Railway Station Art Gallery, Pomona’s original railway station.

Meanwhile, the people of the Noosa Hinterland will find it cheaper to travel by public transport following a state government overhaul of fares and travel zones.

From January 2017, the 23 travel zones within the TransLink bus and rail network will be reduced to just eight zones. The current zones 22 and 23 will become zone 8. Cooran and Pomona are in Zone 23 currently, while Cooroy and Noosa Heads are in zone 22. Whereas travel between adjacent zones attracted a two-zone fare ($6.70 using a go-card pre-paid electronic ticket), a single zone fare will apply ($3.35). Further discounts apply for seniors and those who travel off-peak ($2.68), while those using single purchase paper tickets bought on board buses will pay $4.80 for a single trip in one zone.

There is no-where to buy a go-card ticket in Pomona. The nearest selling points are the Cooroy railway station and Cooroy BP service station.

Boost for hinterland projects in Noosa Council budget Noosa Hinterland property owners will pay an extra $20 a year in council rates, based on the general residential minimum rate, when rate notices start to be posted from the middle of July.

Noosa Council has also increased some levies and charges for 2016-17. In a move likely to benefit Pomona’s historic institutions, the heritage levy has doubled to $10, while the tourism levy, paid by businesses across the shire, has been reconfigured to become an economic and tourism levy, as the council seeks to promote a sustainable economic agenda.

“The funds going to Tourism Noosa will remain unchanged, with the additional income from the increase – around $170,000 per year – going to fund projects that specifically target economic enhancement,” Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said.

Overall, general rates rise 1.9 per cent on average. A five per cent discount applies for early payment.

The Budget was adopted at a special council meeting held on 29 June. Cr Wellington said it was a ‘responsible and practical’ budget that delivered a $23.1 million capital works program while keeping rate rises to a minimum.

A suite of hinterland projects is included in the program, including a sealed bus turnaround facility at Pomona State School, where motorist and pedestrian safety has long been a concern.

Cr Wellington said the $250,000 project would improve safety in the pick-up and drop-off zone. “There is the added benefit of stopping the clouds of dust that have been finishing up in the school’s swimming pool.”

Significantly, he said Pomona would also see the development of a town centre master plan, to be developed in consultation with the community.

Pomona’s skate park will also gain a replacement shade sail.

“We’ll continue developing plans for an iconic playground to be situated in Cooroy. This is a very exciting project, and I know Cr Pardon has been a strong advocate,” he said.

“The historic Boiler House next to the Woodies and Camphor Laurel operations will receive essential repair and safety works, hopefully bringing that work to fruition and allowing the site to once again open to the public.

“At Cooran, $100,000 has been set aside to improve pathways leading to the state school.

“Money will be spent refurbishing the Boreen Point campground amenities, and also to provide more powered sites there,” Cr Wellington said.

“I am also pleased to announce the funding of a Six Mile Creek flood study.

This will provide the council with a better understanding of flooding across the catchment, from Cooroy to Pomona and Cooran. It will also fulfil my promise to investigate residents’ flood concerns in the Lake Macdonald area,” Cr Wellington said.

“Kinmond Creek Road, at Cootharaba, will be the location of two new culverts at a total cost of $1.25 million. The existing culverts at Sandy Creek and Eastern Branch are failing.”

Cr Wellington said unsealed hinterland roads would be re-sheeted with gravel under a $400,000 program, but this may be only part of the storyfor rural roads.

“Noosa Council currently is finishing an assessment of the sealed road network. That gargantuan task will highlight where there are roads requiring attention. If rural sealed roads require immediate attention, capital reserves are available for this purpose,” Cr Wellington said.

This round of funding also includes $8210 to help develop the shire’s Arts, Cultural and Heritage Plan.

BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS Expensive footpath hire charge Al fresco footpath dining is a part of the Noosa lifestyle, and a way we can enjoy village life connected with the great outdoors, but the privilege comes at a cost. Noosa Council charges coffee shops and restaurants for the space their tables occupy on footpaths that the council builds and maintains. Eateries pass on the annual fees in the prices they charge for food and drink.

Noosa Council’s 2016-17 Budget reveals that eateries and food establishments in Hastings Street are charged an annual fee of $837.40 per square metre for the right to place tables and chairs on council footpaths. At Cooroy, the fee is $151.30 annually, per square metre.

Pomona businesses that offer an onfootpath dining experience must pay more – $157.40 per year, per square metre, despite the fact that Pomona is a smaller town than Cooroy and has less foot traffic through town.

******** Fire levy protects us all The fire levy added to council rates and paid to the rural fire brigades throughout Noosa Hinterland designated areas remains unchanged, at $25 per rateable property for 201617. Among brigades that receive money through the levy applying to rural residential households are those at Black Mountain, Boreen Point, Federal, Kin Kin and Ridgewood.

The council Budget notes state: “It is beyond the fundraising ability of the volunteers that staff the rural fire brigades within Noosa Shire to raise the funds to meet their operational costs and to acquire and maintain the necessary equipment to conduct their activities.”

The Pomona Fire Station is funded separately, from state government sources.

Grants deliver early Christmas cheer

$30,000 for arts via RADF grants A project to nurture, mentor and showcase young musicians will receive funding in the latest round of RADF (Regional Arts Development Fund) grants announced recently.

The Pomona Arts initiative, based at the Majestic Theatre, will link aspiring young musicians with music industry mentors to deliver live gigs.

Noosa Council is entering into the Christmas spirit early this year with more than $35,000 being allocated to support local festivities – including Pomona’s annual Night of Lights. The Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club receives $2400 to conduct the event. The funding is confirmed for three years.

Community Festive Event Grants of between $3000 and $10,000 annually, for three years.

The Kin Kin Community Group has a $1500 present to organise that town’s Christmas Tree, while Christmas in Cooroy, organised by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, gets a $7000 boost.

The financial assistance is another initiative of Noosa Council’s revamped Community Grants Program, Mayor Tony Wellington said.

Noosa’s RADF committee chair, Cr Jess Glasgow, said Noosa Council was pleased to approve just over $30,000 in RADF funding in this round, including $7000 for the mentoring project at the Majestic.

“This project will help young and aspiring musicians to gain a foothold in the music business while developing their skills in a supportive local environment,” Cr Glasgow said.

“It is one of a range of quality projects this round of RADF grants will support.”

The Wallace House Quilters will receive $1570 to host a two-day workshop on modern quilting techniques and trends.

Noosa Arts Theatre will gain $10,000 to deliver a series of performances in collaboration with Cooran’s Farmhouse Theatre.

Funds raised from the evening were donated to the charity, Destiny Rescue. Nerilee Sowter from Destiny Rescue told how the money raised would help rescue young children from sexual exploitation and slavery in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India and the Philippines.

Once rescued, their mission is to restore ‘childhood’ back to the children by providing them with medical help, counselling, schooling, vocational training and all daily

needs required to be integrated back into society successfully.

New website helps mental illness carers The barriers to a wider community discussion about mental health are being broken down through a new on-line initiative aimed at the carers of those suffering a mental illness, according to a Pomona woman Ms Narelle Ladd.

Ms Ladd is a member of the Queensland Mental Health Carer’s Forum that has worked with Queensland Health to compile information and mount the computer-based assistance tool. It includes a question and answer section, discussion forum and helpful advice that will be updated every month.

Busy agenda to follow Lions Club changeover dinner The Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club changeover dinner last month attracted a large attendance from visiting service clubs throughout the district.

Special guest, Mayor Tony Wellington, and Past District Governor, Pat Bauer attended, with Pat addressing the theme of "Busy Bees" - a reference to the work of Lions in the community.

Parenting workshop series helping to create lasting change A new six-week workshop series titled “Chaos to Calm” and facilitated by experienced life coach Leanne Zecchinati starts this month.

Funded by Noosa Council, the first of the courses starts on Thursday 28 July and runs through to Thursday 1 September.

This is a unique parenting workshop aimed at creating long lasting change in families. Designed to assist families with children of all ages, it takes participants through steps needed to go beyond the quick fix and to achieve lasting results.

Topics by week include resourceful parenting, choosing your battles, structure and consistency, being present in your child’s life., creating lasting change, knowing and understanding your child.

Leanne has trained extensively in coaching. She holds an advanced Diploma in Effective Parenting. Celebrating the joy of childhood: Under Eights Day

By: Ayden Horsman, Zak Walker and Eilean Lough Celebrating “Under Eights Day” is a time when we celebrate the joys of childhood.

This year is the 60th year of the celebration organised annually by the Early Childhood Australia Queensland Branch which aims to give young children a forum to shine and enhance community awareness of the rich and competent contribution young children make to the community.

Under 8’s Day - It is a special day for kids under 8 because it is a time where they can have fun and play and celebrate being young. On the 27th May Pomona State School held its Under 8’s festivities.

A great time was had by all kids, with face painting and other fun activities like an obstacle course, cookie decorating, colouring in and bracelet making.

Lake Macdonald dam on new Qld infrastructure list An $80 million safety upgrade of the Lake Macdonald dam is among 16 major infrastructure projects worth a combined $10 billion that the new Building Queensland authority has recommended to the state government as worthy of being funded and built. The project will proceed to the business case phase – a full analysis of its design, construction methodology and costs, to be completed by the end of the year.

Duplication of the North Coast Railway Line to Landsborough and further realignment and track augmentation to Nambour are among other major infrastructure projects Building Queensland has recommended for government funding.

Building Queensland’s ‘pipeline of major project’ report, released last month, says the Lake Macdonald dam upgrade is required to meet modern standards and the performance requirements of the Queensland dam safety regulations.

“The upgrade will allow the dam to better manage severe weather and earthquake events,” the report said.

Built originally in 1965 to hold back waters of Six Mile Creek, the Lake Macdonald dam wall was raised in 1980 to increase its storage capacity to 8018 megalitres.

Currently it is 100 per cent full. The dam is operated by Seqwater and supplies water to Noosa and South-East Queensland via the SEQ Water Grid.

Museum, Landcare and Men’s Shed among Council grant recipients Noosa Museum and Noosa Landcare, both based at Pomona, and the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association are among a wide range of community groups to receive a cash boost in the first round of Noosa Council’s new Community Alliance Grants – totalling $133,500 – as part of the revamped Community Grants Program.

Noosa Landcare receives $15,500, the Noosa Museum $5000 and Pomona Arts Inc. a further $7500. The catchment association has $15,500 for its work, while Country Noosa is supported with a $3000 council grant.

“These new three-year Community Alliance Grants give greater certainty to select organisations whose ongoing work deserves support,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “They relieve the groups from having to fill in application forms every year. These longer funding arrangements are a great initiative,” he said.

Calling all garden enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a stroll through a beautiful parkland setting, we invite you to join us for a delightful day out to Roma Street Parklands on Tuesday 16 August.

There will also be a train tour of the parklands and a regular guided tour will be available.

Work progresses on the Pomona Men’s Shed

by Doug Bettens, President Every Wednesday and Saturday morning I get in our car and head for Pomona. I have made this trip many times and always look forward to the drive along Pound Road and into town.

Something special has been happening lately that has put a spring in my step. As I travel slowly down Reserve Street and turn right into School Street there is a track off to the left which I follow and there, tucked among the trees at the entrance to the Mt Cooroora walking track, is our latest project, our Men’s shed.

Many years ago this shed was built and used by Queensland Forestry Department as a workshop and in later times changed to its new owners Queensland National Parks and Wildlife. It is now home for Men’s Shed Pomona under an occupancy agreement.

The old shed has gained a “wow factor” and has been transformed over the last twelve months through great care and attention into a usable workshop and meeting area for the men of Pomona and districts. All the damage to the old building has been repaired and the building has doubled in size and been painted cream.

We have all done an amazing job with the transformation as there is now a disabled toilet and shower room, kitchen area with stove and oven that is nearing completion, power throughout the building, hot and cold running water, two workshop areas, garden shed and a shade house.
