Local women lead the way As part of Queensland Women’s Week, the Pomona & District Community House is hosting Local Women Lead the Way, on Thursday 9 March at the Pomona State School Hall.

The evening starts at 6.00pm (please arrive at 5.45pm) and will finish around 8.30pm.

Communities through the YWCA, the event will showcase the stories of some of our local leaders, the contribution they make to our community and how they manage to do all the things they do!

The depth of talent in Pomona and surrounds is amazing - we only wish we had more time to showcase more women. Our speakers come from a variety of fields and include both local and international business owners, a rural ambassador and local student leaders.

Bonsai Brewery heads to Cooran In the wash-up of events following the closure of the successful Bonsai Brewery and Rustika Restaurant at Pomona, Cooran has emerged as a winner over Pomona following confirmation that the brewery will relocate to that town.

Bonsai Brewery owner, Matt Vandveen, has announced on the business’ Facebook page that it will be relocating to the new venue, but has advised customers that it will take some time to set up new licenced premises.

Matt pours last beer at the Bonsai Brewery Pomona premises, now closed and (below) the interior of the old brewery.

“Any outstanding gift vouchers can either be refunded or used once we reopen,” Matt said.

“We have received lots of love and support and wish to thank all those who have offered assistance including labour.

“We owe it to everyone to bring back Bonsai bigger and better, so here goes.”

Matt remains tight-lipped about the building that will become the brewery premises.

Bonsai Brewhouse first came on the scene back in April 2016 and created waves across the Coast, for its charming set-up and range of experimental frothies.

QUT students arrive in town during March Architectural students from the Queensland University of Technology will visit Pomona throughout March as part of their coursework to design imaginary buildings for the town. In previous years, students have drawn up plans for a Pomona library, community centre, markets, a hotel above the railway station, an accommodation lodge and a new museum.

Sagging ceiling forces immediate hall closure The meeting schedule of many community groups has been thrown into confusion with the sudden closure of the Pomona Memorial Hall due to a structural failure that has required the use of metal support props to support the roof trusses in a section of the building between the original hall and the stage. This extension was added in the 1940s.

Noosa Council ordered the immediate closure of the hall on 16 February on the advice of a contracting building inspector and engineer after it was noticed that there were issues with the roof supports and that a full analysis would be required to determine what form of rectification works would be required.

Cooroy School names leadership team It was once said that leadership is empowering young people to see themselves as change-makers.

Butterflies family support group Cemetery fence upgrade Noosa Council has scheduled the replacement of the fence at the Pomona Cemetery for financial year 2017-18. A report to the council says the fence is in poor repair.

Funding is coming from money set aside for maintenance of Noosa’s three cemeteries.

Stop sign review The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will monitor traffic conditions at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Gardners Road with the Old Bruce Highway to assess whether stop signs at these locations should be replaced with give-way signs.

The joint Noosa Council-TMR Traffic Advisory Committee was told that residents had requested the change in correspondence with the Queensland Police Service.

Traffic speed reduction Traffic speeds will be reduced to 60kph on a small section of Summit Road, Pomona, close to its junction with Louis Bazzo Drive.

Meanwhile, sections of the Cooroy-Noosa Road currently subject to 100 kph speed limits will have the speed dropped to 90 kph in the interests of safety.

Praise for Stan as SES veteran steps down Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington today thanked local SES controller Stan Ryan for more than three decades of service to the local community.

Mr Ryan will soon step down, ending a 35-year chapter with the local SES. “Stan’s contribution to the safety, amenity and wellbeing of this community has been an enduring one,” the Mayor said.

“Stan himself has been named Regional Member of the Year and been awarded the Minister's Cup, denoting outstanding service and commitment to the SES. He has also been awarded the Emergency Services Medal.”

Keeping your family stories alive From your Grandfather’s best pickup line to how your parents meet, it’s all part of your story.

Stories exchanged over Sunday lunch; around a camp fire or on Grandad’s knee, are priceless.

Yet when that life ends, those incredible stories end too. Our children’s children will never know those words. How do we keep those stories alive?

‘Button Jar Stories’ is the brainchild of Sunshine Coast Writer, Author, former Noosa Magazine Columnist and Blogger, Celeste Frances Scott.

Celeste set about ensuring those precious stories are told, printed and preserved in a leather-bound book to hand down through the generations.

As Celeste explains, “My Dad was the Storyteller in our family. Sadly, both my parents died at ages when their grey nomad adventures were beginning. We have many photographs but my children will never know those stories in Dad’s own words. I’m determined to change that for other families, one story a time.”

BOOMERANG BAGS tackle Talkin’ Bout Cooran pollution at the grass roots For those who don’t already know, Boomerang Bags is an Australia wide community initiative that tackles plastic pollution at the grassroots level.

Cooran residents, past and present, are invited to come to their hall on Sunday 26 March.

From 9am, people gather to chat and recall times past in Cooran.

BYO picnic style lunch, free tea and coffee are provided, and raffle of goodies in the afternoon to cover cost.

Council renews its commitment to Land for Wildlife Noosa Council is set to enter into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Land for Wildlife Program.

This program sees numerous Noosa properties voluntarily seeking better outcomes for our native fauna.

Initiated in Victoria over 30 years ago, the Land for Wildlife Program is a network of thousands of Australian landholdings, each managed with the as important as that in a aim of conserving nature. national park.

Noosa Council’s Community Partnership’s Officer Kylie Gordon said the program was an important element in maintaining local biodiversity.

"Noosa boasts over 300 Land for Wildlife members. Each of them supports conservation and good environmental land management on their private properties," she said.

Acting OUT The Pomona & District Community House is thrilled to present, Acting OUT, a week long drama school for teens during Youth Week 2017.

Funded by Noosa Council, this exciting workshop will be facilitated by NIDA drama coach, Louise Bezel.

Louise, who recently directed ‘Still’ at the Noosa Arts Theatre, says that she is passionate about teaching young people the skills needed to develop themselves as actors and is very pleased to be able to offer the workshop locally. She says that the Cooran Memorial Hall is perfectly set up for drama productions and will be a fantastic venue for the program.

During the week long drama intensive, students will spend time developing performance skills including improvisation, voice, movement, devising, acting and scene rehearsal skills. They will analyse text and learn how an actor applies their craft to the text. At the end of the week participants will perform scenes for family and friends in an open session.

Pomona Pacers celebrate members’ birthdays Another year of walking programs is underway for the Pomona Pacers.

After a break over the holiday season, January saw an easing back into the swing of weekday morning walks, taking to the more shaded town routes and bush tracks due to the protracted heat.

Meeting up with friends and the social benefits of companionship complement the health aspects of a brisk walk.

The group has enjoyed two dinner occasions. Held monthly on the Wednesday evening nearest full moon, there was a casual BYO picnic at the Noosa River foreshore for January, while Mr Jones & Me was the venue at Noosaville for February.

The first field excursion for 2017 involved a visit to Buderim Forest Park -- a most beautiful pocket of rainforest with boardwalk and tracks, piccabeen palms, rocky creek, and waterfall.

With six members of the Pomona Pacers having a birthday in February, the 15th was chosen as the day to celebrate with morning coffee and cake (a BIG one!)

The walkers take a variety of town routes and bush tracks, with regular Wednesday coffee mornings, excursions, and “moon walks”.

The Pacers look forward to meeting with the Tewantin Tickers, a fellow Heart Foundation Walking Group, for a walk and breakfast at the Noosa River in early March.

Pomona Pacers is a friendly group of people who come together to walk in company.

Participation is free, involving a week day walk lasting around 60 minutes at a brisk pace.

Call for more gardening volunteers Volunteers are being sought to join the ranks of the Pomona Community Gardens group which maintain the grounds around the Lawson Shed, bush tucker gardens and garden area between the car park adjacent to the Community House and the North Coast Law officer in Station Street.

The volunteers maintain fitness and enjoy each other’s company as they exercise their green thumbs and exchange gardening tips.

Noosa Orchestra plans afternoon at Cooran

By Helen Dewar In our digital age, we often forget just how different real live music is compared to our TV or Hi Fi. While improvements in sound quality have been amazing, it only takes a visit to one of Noosa Orchestra's Concerts to feel again the thrill of live music undistorted by amplification.

This next Concert will be no exception. With music to interest everyone, Conductor, Antoni Bonetti has selected another wonderful program.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s 1st Symphony which is both tuneful and exuberant.

Our solo oboist, Frances Brodie from the Brisbane Symphony, will entertain you with Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in D Minor as well as Gabrielle’s Oboe from the movie “The Mission” - a hauntingly beautiful piece.

Choir gives voice to having fun Pomona Community Choir has a new home to sing in - the Lawson Shed.

Recently bolstered with additional numbers, the Choir has out grown the Lions Hall and had been looking for a larger venue.

Led by choir director Jo Deguara, the choir sings multiple genres, in a supportive, fun and non-auditioned environment.

Members of the Pomona Community Choir (above) performed at a recent Cooran Acoustic Night, to the delight of those who attended.

The Choir sings regularly at the Cooran Acoustic Night and entertains at local events.

The cost is $10 (first night free).

The group meets on Tuesdays 6.30pm to 8.30pm (during school term times only).

Start of mural town concept for Pomona Local artist to paint railway station image Queensland Rail has named indigenous artist Peter Mulcahy as the person who will work with students from the Pomona State School to paint a mural on the cement block walls of an equipment building at the existing Pomona railway station, ahead of the station’s reconstruction later this year.

It’s hoped the move will kick-start a drive for other murals at Pomona, depicting its history and industry.

Angela Thwaite, senior projects communications advisor at Queensland Rail, said meetings had been arranged between artist and students for the first quarter of 2017 and that ‘on-site activity should be happening in the next couple of months.’

Peter Mulcahy’s indigenous name is Muraay Djeripi, which translates as Sulphur Crested White Cockatoo and free Flying Spirit. The White Cockatoo is the story teller and Uniter of Tribes.

Money for the mural is coming from Queensland Rail’s Positive pARTnerships Program, which aims to work with community groups, local schools, and other stakeholders to jointly produce high quality public artwork and instill pride in rail infrastructure.

To date, the Positive pARTnerships Program has delivered 100 projects, which cover approximately 20,000 square meters across the Queensland Rail Citytrain network. This includes station buildings, subways, bike lockers, car park banners, ramps, and lift wells. The program has proved effective in countering graffiti.
