Students are rehearsing, parents are helping with costumes and teachers have planned a line-up of acts to showcase the talent we have at Pomona State School.

Heart disease is the biggest single killer of Australians and yet many people do not know a lot about it.

One person who does is the Community House’s own Brian Lawson. Twelve years ago Brian noticed some differences in his wellbeing.

He went from being someone who was very active to feeling tired a lot of the time and unable to carry out physical activity.

Thinking a check- up was in order, Brian was shocked to discover that what he thought was “just feeling a bit off” was, in fact, a heart condition called cardiomyopathy. Lucky to have been diagnosed when he was, Brian was prescribed medication which has changed - and perhaps saved – his life.

Hinterland gets ready for film festival The Noosa hinterland is gearing up for the highly anticipated Noosa International Film Festival in November and posters are starting to draw attention.

The festival program was launched last month and organisers say there is something for every film lover.

“The Noosa International Film Festival has something for anyone who enjoys film, from powerful short films to environmental documentaries and new release feature films,” says Festival Director Peter Chenoweth.

With an all premiere line-up of new release films from Australia and overseas and the attraction of internationally-acclaimed filmmakers, it was easy for wellknown community supporters, Bendigo Bank to get behind the festival.

Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards, says the sponsorship is a great fit. “This is precisely what our Community Bank branches in Cooroy and Tewantin are all about - banking profits going back into our community,” Geoff said.

Art market in the paddock a huge success

Echoes from the Hills Noosa councillors to meet locals of Cootharaba and Boreen Point The Cootharaba Community Association (CCA) has invited Noosa councillors to come and meet the locals of Boreen Point, Cootharaba and surrounds at 11am on Saturday 12 November.

Contingent represents Pomona in NZ race A contingent of winning runners in the Pomona King of the Mountain race is making its way back to Australia after competing in the gruelling race up 820m Mt Edgecombe – New Zealand’s premier mountain race challenge.

A volcanic plug similar to Mt Cooroora, Mt Edgecombe is located near the town of Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty region, about 50 km from Rotorua.

This was the thirty-first time that Pomona’s representative team had travelled to Kawerau for the return leg of the trans-Tasman mountain challenge.

The first was the Pomona leg in July, when a New Zealand team from Mt Edgecombe competed here.

Ben Duffus, who won at Pomona in 2013 and 2014, was attempting to hold the title he won last year at Kawerau. Leslie Saunders defended the NZ veteran women’s title, which she won in 2014 and 2015.

The team flew out on October 27. The results of the NZ race were not know at the time the Cooroora Connect went to press.

The Pomona team comprised the 2016 outright winners – Mark Bourne from Canberra (men), Leslie Saunders from Pomona (women) Rod Cowling (veteran mens) and Lachlan Challis (junior). Also joining the contingent are past winners Ben Duffus and Neil Labinsky, also Dan King.

Mark Bourne was on his first trip to Mt Edgecombe and was expected to do well. Neil Labinsky and Lachlan Challis were seeking to run sub 60minute times, as they did last year, while Rod Cowling and Dan King, both on the first trip to the NZ challenge, hoped for good results.

Tip-toe through the Noosa Hinterland The Great Noosa Trail Walk 2016 held on the first weekend in October was a huge success with tickets booked out months in advance.

This year over 150 walkers and volunteer guides tip-toed through the Noosa Hinterland, taking only pictures and leaving only footprints while on the trails.

They experienced some of the very best of Noosa Hinterland’s nature, culture and communities.

Event founder, Shaun Walsh said the event was an exceptional opportunity to inject a bit of extra life into the smaller towns along the way, “Over the three days, walkers stop at Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin and we conservatively estimate that over $40,000 is injected back into the local economy to businesses and community groups.”

The Great Noosa Trail Walk prides itself on being a safe and enjoyable way for people to experience the quiet beauty of the Noosa Hinterland with volunteers and trails guides scattered along the tracks to make sure walkers didn’t lose their way.

As well as guides and volunteers the Great Noosa Trail Walk offered a shuttle service that transported walkers’ heavy luggage and camping gear to the evening’s campsite, freeing up walkers so they could really enjoy their time and stop and smell the roses.

The trail boasts a beautiful scenic walk with sights beyond compare, and thanks to the volunteers who worked tirelessly over the long weekend, walkers of every fitness level and any profession were able to see every bit of it.

Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington joined the walk on Day One with fellow councillors Ingrid Jackson, Jess Glassgow and Joe Jurisevic.

Generations gather for Kin Kin School centenary Generations of former and present pupils of the Kin Kin State School gathered in the town on 22 October to celebrate community and the 100th anniversary of the education institution that has instilled a sense of pride and purpose across the ages.

Reminiscences were exchanged and old tales recalled, with memories refreshed by the opening of a time capsule buried 25 years ago on the school’s 75th anniversary. In 1991, each student attending Kin Kin School wrote a letter to themselves.

They were gathered and sealed with other memorabilia especially for a celebration such as the centenary.

It seemed as though the whole town had gathered for the event, which began at the Kin Kin School of Arts Hall, which housed the Kin Kin Provisional School temporarily until a permanent school was built.

The crowd made its way to the school, where principal Trent Shaw became MC for a round of entertainment provided by presentday students. Noosa Museum and the school mounted a photographic exhibition.

If you’re happy and you know it – complete the survey If you are happy and you know it, Noosa Council wants to know too – and so does the University of Canberra, which is conducting a survey to benchmark the Noosa community’s happiness and wellbeing against other regions across Australia.

Mayor Tony Wellington is backing the Regional Well-being Survey and he’s asking residents to visit the Noosa Council website to access it and complete it.

“If one were to summarise the role of council, it could be argued that our Council is calling for Noosa residents to participate in a regional survey that will help true purpose is to support the wellestablish Noosa’s overall wellbeing. being of our residents,” Cr Wellington said.

Squeeze up to allow for more people to live in Noosa Shire An additional 9500 people will be living in Noosa Shire in 2041 – yet still within the nominal population cap – under plans the State Government has released for public comment, as it grapples with accommodating an extra two million people in SouthEast Queensland (SEQ) over the next 25 years.

It means Noosa’s population will rise to 63,000, requiring more than 8000 new dwellings; not all of them detached houses. Wherever possible, extra people will be accommodated within the existing urban footprint, mainly through in-fill housing.

Staff and volunteers at the Noosa Museum no longer will run around with buckets and mops whenever there is a downpour of rain. The building housing the shire’s most important collection of historic artefacts and documents finally has its roof leaks plugged, courtesy of the Noosa Council.

The museum, which is based at Pomona, closed from October 24 to 28 so that the council could replace weathered corrugated iron roof sheets during the fourday shutdown.

Built in 1911 and renovated in 1929 and again in 1960, the Factory Street building was Noosa Shire Council’s original chambers.

“It’s more than one hundred years old and of significant historical value,” says Council’s Community Services Director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers.

“The collection the building houses is equally valuable, so we had to work to repair the roof as quickly as possible. Every effort was made to ensure the repairs were in keeping with the building’s character.”

Mr Rogers said the council liaised with the museum operator, the Cooroora Historical Society, so that the repairs went smoothly.

The operators of Pomona’s refurbished public swimming pool are hoping that numbers will pick up on Saturday afternoons or else they may be forced to consider altering opening hours.

Get together with your friends and have a fun Saturday afternoon playing in the cool and crystal clean waters of your local community pool.

On Saturdays, the pool is available to to 6pm. Saturday morning opening the public from 1pm to 4pm. times are 7.30am to 10am.

Changing lives, one child at a time We're reminded a dog is a man's best friend so often that it's easy to forget the power of those words. Slowly, organisations like Smart Pups are teaching us that those words are changing young lives.

The Pomona based not-for-profit organisation specialises in providing trained service dogs to assist children with special needs. As more locals learn about Smart Pups and the amazing work they do, the more we marvel at the positive changes that occur between a child and a Smart Pup over time.

One local business decided to give Smart Pups a call to make a donation last week. They were delighted when not only a few representatives turned up to say thank you, but when some Smart Pups in training came along as well, hearts melted and big smiles appeared.

Janelle Denny from Smart Pups added that each pooch reduce stress level in children and have a profound effect on the day-to-day lives of the child and family.

"Since we launched the charity in 2011, our organisation has place 71 dogs with families. At the

moment we have another 48 families on our register. Each dog is placed at 12-18 months of age and is granted full public access and they accompany families on shopping trips, outings and even holidays. The dog become an integral part of the recipient families' life," Janelle said.

"We don't receive any official government funding so we rely solely on donations, grants and fundraising activities to operate. That's why donations just like this one from Bendigo Bank are so valued and so important to us," she added.

Pomona Pacers: Still walking, still smiling The Pomona Pacers have seen a few changes recently with some dear friends moving to live elsewhere.

Denise Watts, Beth McGregor and Helen Randall have all somewhat reluctantly left Pomona for various reasons. We are delighted, however, that we are still in contact with them and it is great to have Denise and Beth still able to join in our walks and social program from time to time.

We continue to welcome new members to our group and our overall membership is currently 22.

This is great for our community; not only does it mean people are interested in getting some exercise but also it means we have a strong social support group within town.

Life for the Pomona Pacers is not all about sweaty walks. As well as keeping people fit, the pacers also gather for social and commemorative occasions. Pictured are members on a recent outing.

The group is very supportive and friendly and always willing to lend a hand. We have recently had a busy schedule including a beach walk at the Noosa North Shore with the Tewantin Tickers (our neighbouring Heart Foundation Walking Group).

National Park, our first weekend excursion to the Bunya Mountains and a final year get together with the Tewantin Tickers at the Noosa Botanic Gardens. It will be a busy run up to the silly season.

We also conducted a walk in silence through the Noosa Botanic Gardens on Daffodil Day to remember those affected by cancer, a climb to a lookout in Kin Kin, a Full Moon Sunset Cruise organised through the Cooroy Golf Club in support of breast cancer research, and a longer walk from Cooran to Pomona.

Sadly, we farewelled Col Easton in September when Col lost his fight with brain cancer. Col had been a member of the Pomona Pacers since the early days and he was very chuffed last year when he reached 100 walks.

A series of successful introductory days for children about to enter Prep at Pomona State School in 2017 has helped ease the transition into school life for youngsters across the district.
