Expect the unexpected on our hinterland stage STILL, an Adults Only production directed by Cooran-based writer, director, producer, actor and teacher Louise Bezel, opens in October bringing raw, contemporary theatre to our doorstop.

This coast to country collaboration will see Noosa Arts Theatre tour the production to Pomona’s Majestic Theatre for one-night only on Saturday 15 October.

The tour comes thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant and a push by local creatives to bring quality theatre to our hinterland venues.

The eight engaging monologues are presented by a selection of Sunshine Coast’s finest actors (aged from 20s to over 50s), including Madeleine Carter, Claire Fermo, Sharon Grimley, Stephen Moore, James Patrick Reed, Ben Snaath, Frank Wilkie and our very own Pomona resident Andrée Stark.

“The show is appealingly raw and the subject matter is uncensored, unleashing a beautiful mix of edgy, black comedy pieces”, director Louise Bezel said.

Artist invites you to meet her feathered companions The Pomona Railway Station Gallery is proud to present ‘Companions’, a Solo Exhibition by local artist Erica Evans.

The opening will be at 11 am on Saturday, 15th October, 2016 and the Exhibition runs until 15th November, 2016.

Although Erica enjoys a variety of subjects most of her current work reflects her love of birds, many of which inhabit the local area. Erica is inspired by the Australian landscape and her observations of the daily lives of birds.

The Noosa Hinterland’s creative talent will be on display at a market to be held on 22 October.

Spring art market promotes local creative talent The Old Railway Station Gallery is holding its Spring Art Market in the Paddock, 10 Station Street, Pomona on Saturday 22 October from 9am to 1pm.

The aim of the market is to promote local artists, artisans and crafts persons and to give the public an opportunity to meet with the creative community.

There will be many stalls exhibiting paintings, ceramics, woodwork, handcrafts, jewellery and more, making this the perfect opportunity to buy quality art and craft at affordable prices direct from the artist.

“I want my paintings to tell their story and bring into focus the beauty and value of these beautiful creatures. They are with us every day. Whether they are raucously flying overhead, waking us up with their songs or visiting the bird bath, they live beside us and are an endless source of fascination for me. I regard them as “companions” as I couldn’t imagine a world without birds”.

Erica completed a Diploma of Fine Arts in 2009 at the Noosa TAFE Campus, has exhibited in group exhibitions and has won several awards including “Best in Show” at the Noosa Regional Gallery “Taste of Art Exhibition” in 2015.

The Pomona Railway Station Gallery located at 10 Station St, Pomona is a wonderful space for local artists to exhibit their work and Erica is looking forward to the opening of her Exhibition in such an attractive setting. All welcome.

Noosa Council is offering artists who are starting in business a chance to learn from arts industry guru Stephen Clark during a Set Up and Run Your Arts Business workshop.

The day-long workshop will provide practical steps for artists just starting to make money from their creativity, or who are in the early stages of their creative venture. The workshop will be conducted from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday, 11 October, at the CQU Campus, Noosaville.

The evening provides a glimpse into the rich and diverse range of talent which this area seems to generate.

For the professional, it is a chance to showcase their act. For first-timers, it is an opportunity to get up and try that one thing they’ve always wanted to do, to accomplish performing on a professional stage.

Run by a band of enthusiastic individuals who provide a fun atmosphere, the Acoustic Night is a relaxing evening for all the family.

There is room to move around, hot meals are available, and in-between acts is a great time for catching up, or meeting new people.

“Noosa has so many great artists and we really want to help them develop their business smarts,” Ms Simonsen said. “The workshop will include an overview of the arts business world, as well as a look at different business models. Artists will gain insights and learn tools to help them develop their profile and build their own small business.

“There are only limited places and, because Stephen Clark is so well known in the industry, we expect them to fill fast,” Ms Simonsen said.

Artists who would like to attend should email Noosa Council one paragraph describing themselves and their business, and do so by Tuesday 27 September.

Ms Simonsen said Noosa Council was considering whether to offer more workshops later in the Grow Your Arts series, in areas such as digital storytelling, how to source funding, and ‘one for the musos’.

Charity concert proceeds to aid holiday kids A concert to be held at Pomona later this month, involving performances by some of the region’s most talented groups and artists, will raise money for local children whose families can’t afford the cost of sending them to a school holiday camp.

The churches of Pomona have backed the project, which is an initiative of Paulette Gee, the Pomona State School chaplain, and local musicians Gray Liddell and Charles Bollendorff.

The concert provides an opportunity for the Pomona community to further support our young people.

The Strings and Things Concert will be held at the Pomona Anglican Church on Saturday 29 October, starting at 2.30pm. Admission is just $5.

The featured musicians are from the Sunshine Coast and are donating their time to help the cause.

Those attending the concert will be entertained with an eclectic mix of music genres – from classical to

The afternoon will be rounded off by ‘Change of Heart’ – a country bluegrass/gospel band. Members David, Phil and Greg provide great three-part harmony vocals involving banjo, guitar and mandolin instrumentals.

Pirates chuffed as Bendigo Bank re-commits for 2017 The sun may have only just set on the 2016 season, but the Cooroy Community Bank branch has given the Noosa Pirates juniors a little more to get excited about for next year.

On presentation day, the Pirates’ Ian Hardcastle celebrated the welcome news that a new sponsorship deal is already in place for the 2017 season.

He said the club was delighted to know the Community Bank had re-committed to the Pirates so early.

“It makes our planning so much easier and we continue to see this sponsorship as a great fit for the Pirates and for Bendigo Bank.

Eumundi Dragons thank their passionate supporters Another successful season has come to an end for Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club.

President, Doug Toms, took time to thank the club faithful and sponsors at their presentation day last weekend.

“Like most clubs, our season began with our sign on day in February and our wonderful committee has really put in the hard yards for us in 2016.

“I’m really proud of what our club has achieved this season, but watching the improvement of so many of our players has been the greatest reward of all,” Doug said.

“The enthusiasm of our coaches, managers and volunteers has provided so much benefit to our players and we’re very grateful for all they have done,” he added.

Doug also welcomed Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona agency’s Geoff Edwards and thanked him for his support.

Coast run for fitness fulfils Melanie’s dream Local resident Melanie Eager is a regular runner, but last month she decided to set out on her longest run to date – from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast, where she attended a two-day conference.

Melanie is raising funds for the U Can Survive, a cancer support charity in Nambour and all donations are still being kindly received.

The venture was to raise money for charity, but also – as Melanie puts it – to prove that those with a dream should work to fulfil them.

Who are we?

We are a fun group who enjoy walking and social outings. We have over 20 walkers and have been going strong now for more than 6 years.

How far do we walk?

We walk at a brisk pace for 50-60 minutes with longer adventure walks scheduled from time to time. We explore bush tracks as well as town walks.

When do we walk?

We walk every week day (except public holidays).

From April through to end September we meet at 7:00 am and from October through to end March we meet at 6:30 am.

Watch for swooping magpies, as breeding season has started Watch for swooping magpies as the breeding season has started.

Council is warning residents to watch out for swooping magpies this spring, as the breeding season begins.

“Most magpies do not attack, but during breeding season some individual birds can become aggressive in defending their nest,” says Council’s Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne.

Council puts up signage in areas where the public has reported swooping magpies. As the breeding season lasts several weeks, the best way is to avoid walking or cycling through these areas until breeding is finished.

Trash to treasure recreation craft day proves popular

A smart pup for Marcus is achievable Smart Pups are trained to help children with special needs gain independence and confidence, as well as provide emotional and physical support.

Marcus, 13,is a Sunshine Coast boy with severe autism and is in need of support. A support group formed to help Marcus believes a Smart Pup will help settle his anxiety, keep him out of harm's way, and help bridge the gap in relating to others.

Marcus has a remarkable affinity for animals including horses, and dogs have a calming effect and help to sooth his anxiety.

Fruit and veg swap promotes Sustainable Noosa principles

The average Australian household throws away about a fifth of all the food grown and purchased each year – a statistic that Noosa Permaculture hopes to reduce through fruit and vegetable swap meets held regularly at Pomona.

Growing your own vegetables is made easy by the permaculture group’s monthly seed savers gatherings where you can help pack seeds for sale, with others around the table having made the journey from novice to confident backyard grower.

Noosa Landcare is supervising Green Army participants as they go about improving the environment at Kin Kin and along Cooroora Creek at Pomona.

With applications now closed for the latest batch of Green Army participants to take part in repairing our environment, Noosa Landcare is set to continue its valuable work of riparian restoration throughout the hinterland.

The Green Army is a hands-on, practical environmental action program that supports local environmental and

heritage conservation projects across Australia.

It is an Australian Government Programme for young people aged 17– 24 years who are interested in protecting their local environment.

Participants receive an allowance and gain practical skills, training and experience in environmental and conservation fields.

PLOD’S PAGE A Foresters Tale: Young Hansel and Gretel were hooning through Ringtail Creek Forestry plantations on their unregistered bikes and cars with their mates, quite a regular occurrence we hear, day and night.

Some naughty and disrespectful Elves were also up to no good, dumping house lots of home renovation material like dangerous old fibro and car bodies, stolen cars and other illegal waste on forestry trails.

Unbeknown to them, their movements were stealthily being tracked by hidden digital Guardians of the Forest and their images were soon thereafter sent to the local Sherriff who took great umbrage at these offences and who also with the Parks and Wildlife crew, yield a mighty collection of fines in his quiver.

The Sherriff and his Forestry and Plantation Qld friends will therefore saddle up their trusty 2 and four wheel mounts and patrol the forestry areas off Louis Bazzo and McKinnon Drives and Ringtail Creek road to stop this misbehaviour.
