EKKA GRAND CHAMPION AT NOOSA COUNTRY SHOW! The Stud Beef Section at this year's Noosa Country Show will be of top class with Noosa's local girl Miss Lucy Roche's Dynamite Kryptonite being exhibited at the 2016 Noosa Country Show.

Lucy gained her love for cattle through the Noosa District High School's Agricultural program and being a member of the Cattle Show Team run by Mr John Masterman.

After duxing Agriculture in year 12, Lucy has gone on to breeding her own cattle and building a stud name.

In only 3 years from starting her own stud name Dynamite Brangus, she has managed to win Grand Champion Brangus Bull at this year's Ekka, fulfilling a life dream. Lucy is also a descendant of the first Chairman and founder of the Noosa Show Society, Joseph William Napier, an original pioneer of the Shire.

The Stud Beef are on show on Saturday 10th September with judging starting at 8am. Young Handlers and Judges are on from Friday at 2.30pm with the future of our beef industry competing to go on with the honour of representing our Noosa Shire.

Dairy Cattle, which was once the biggest local industry, will be on Show from 9am Friday the 9th September, with the top gong going to the “Supreme Champion Cow or Heifer”. Dairy Junior Judges and Handlers will follow the cattle judging.

There are positive young people involved with these industries and they are the future prime cattle producers of the country which we should support, says Noosa Show Society's President, Perene Barker.

U13 Demons’ success is a group effort Two weeks ago it didn’t look like the U13 side at Pomona, Cooroy and District Australian Rules Football Club were a chance of playing finals football.

A couple of gutsy effort wins later and the boys ended up finishing third on the ladder. They went on to win their semi-final, and whilst they weren’t successful in making it to the grand final this year, the club and the boys are proud of a really great season.

But just as the mighty Demons prepare to farewell the many teams for the off-season, the club had extra reason to celebrate this week. One of their main sponsors is the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank, and last week, manager Geoff Edwards called into training to let them know the bank would be on board again in 2017.

A delighted junior club president, Matt Conquest, said the new partnership was a great fit for both parties.

Contractors dismantle the old Pomona Fire Station in Hill Street.

Since the 1950s, a Pomona Fire Station has stood in Factory Street, but it is only a memory today.

Empty since March 2015 when the new fire station premises opened in Reserve Street, the old building was surplus to requirements and not suitable for alternative uses given its position in a flood-

prone part of town.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services requested its demolition. The precinct is set to change further as Queensland Rail is about to embark on constructing a permanent Pomona Railway Station platform next door.

Next Council Grants round opens Next Council Grants round opens 1 September Noosa Council’s latest round of Community Grants opens for applications on 1 September.

Applicants have until noon, 26 October, to apply for Council’s new Economic Development Grants and the latest round of Community Projects Grants.

Council’s aim with the Economic Development Grants is to help local business associations deliver projects that stand to boost the local economy.

“These are projects that encourage business collaboration and innovation, build skills, fill local workforce gaps and position Noosa as a preferred location in which to conduct business,” Council’s senior economic development officer Carolyn Bullen said.

“As the Economic Development grants are a new initiative I strongly advise prospective applicants to discuss their application with a Council Officer prior to making an application” Ms Bullen said.

Pomona Men’s Shed is an example of a community project that could be eligible for a Community Grant The grants, allocated through a competitive assessment process twice a year, can also help fund building works or repairs to local facilities.

Visit to Roma Street Parklands

On Tuesday 16 August a group of gardening enthusiasts set off early by bus from the Community House to visit Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane.

It was a wonderful day, enjoyed by all. Pomona Pacers Walking Group

Who are we?

We are a fun group who enjoy walking and social outings. We have over 20 walkers and have been going strong now for more than 6 years.

How far do we walk?

We walk at a brisk pace for 50-60 minutes with longer adventure walks scheduled from time to time. We explore bush tracks as well as town walks.

When do we walk?

We walk every week day (except public holidays).

From April through to end September we meet at 7:00 am and from October through to end March we meet at 6:30 am.

Where do we meet?

On 10 August, the Cooroy Pomona Lions held their annual dinner in the Cooroy Pomona Lions Den to say thank you to the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the 38th running of the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival such a success.

A large gathering listened as festival chairperson, Heather Manders, gave a recount of the 2016 festival and took time to thank so many who gave time and energy to make sure the iconic event continues to draw thousands to Pomona.

Over a beautiful three-course camp oven barbeque meal, stories and anecdotes from this year’s most gruelling and historic mountain races were shared.

Memories of Elsie McKinley- a Pomona treasure 28 October 1921 - 18 August 2016 Pomona resident for over 12 years Elsie McKinley loved living in Pomona. She was a welcome sight as she enjoyed scooting around on her red ‘mobility machine’.

Elsie enjoyed regular bus trips, chat groups, Care and Share, RSL lunches, going to Legacy and her beloved church. Elsie enjoyed the friendship made at these events and always shared lots of laughter and fun along the way.

Her other interests included trips to the river, the lakes and the sea and the occasional crossword.

Elsie was a great supporter of the ‘Pomona Pixies’ and loved to help decorate the town with her knitting and crochet.

Elsie and her sister May grew up in the Riverina area of NSW. They were quite privileged as their father was a school teacher who owned an Overland, then later a Whippet automobile in which they overtook their neighbours’ horse-drawn carts and sulkies at the blistering speed of 20 mph!

In the early sixties, Elsie with her husband Eric and family moved to a

Sadly, Elsie passed away at the age of 94 and will be greatly missed.

Until the grand age of 94 years, Elsie lived contentedly in her own house with daughter Valerie living in the Through teaching generations of attached premises. Everyone knew the kind lady, enjoyed regular visits from her loving grandchildren.

Trash to Treasure re-creation days

ART MARKET IN THE PADDOCK Calling all artisans The next Market in the grounds of the Pomona Art Gallery will be held on Saturday 22 October from 9am to 1pm.

Stallholder fee is $15.00.

We have had an interesting few months sharing and learning new skills, crafting all manner of items and making new friends. Some of our, mainly needlework, re-creations will be on display at the Noosa Show in the Craft Hall (9-10 Sept)… hurry up now and finish your own projects to enter as well!!!

Our workshops have been developing their own distinctive flavour, wherein sometimes one will work on their own exciting piece and at other times on a group project, your choice.

As our fabulous materials are donations from the community, we use our group projects to give something back. In June we were sewing boomerang bags to help reduce the use of plastics; in July we added a new adventure to pursue, making sensory items for sufferers of trauma, dementia, autism…
