FROM THE EDITOR

Curtis Lawrence Sr., is a native of Gainesville, Florida. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted into the United States Army. He served honorably for 24 years. He toured Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Panama. He retired as one of the top Recruiters in the Raleigh Battalion as On Campus Recruiter for University of North Carolina at Charlotte Army ROTC. Curtis is married to his lovely wife Tonya, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina. Following the birth of his daughter, Curtonia, the realization that he would not be able to share precious memories of her grandmother with her greatly impacted him. In addition to this he realized he only had a few photos of his mother, and the quality wasn’t the best. Thus, his passion to provide quality photos for his family and others was birthed. He has since provided quality images for generations to come. His portfolio contains many celebrities, athletes, chefs, ministers, and authors. Yet, he cherishes photos of his daughter, and sons, Curtis Jr, and Marcus, last but not least his four grandchildren the most. His first booked event was a family member’s wedding, using only a pocket camera The outcome inspired him to pursue and improve his craft. A special thank you to Tracey and Debra for believing in him. Curtis realized he had an eye and natural talent to create beautiful memories. He developed his talent through mentoring and training with professional photographers. Today, he is a highly sought after photographer. Through the encouragement and support of family and friends, Curtis founded Insight Photography, Gastonia, N.C., where he provides an array of services such as family portraits, weddings, and private and corporate events.

BEARD GAME Black men with beards are not a new trend, they have been rocking the shaggy face for years. However, more men seem to be participating in the “beard game” as it is becoming more popular to cultivate, prim, and refine these facial manes to personal styles of perfection.

G

rowing facial hair may not be a challenge for these men, but maintaining a full beard while properly preserving healthy skin underneath may render some clueless. Some men make the common mistake of utilizing cranial hair products on facial hair. Hair products that are meant to treat the scalp contain harsh chemicals too potent to apply to facial hair. For proper maintenance one must first understand that facial hair differs from cranial hair; therefore, it must be treated differently. The scalp has

a thicker layer of skin and is made up of about 90 thousand hair follicles which produces more sebum oil. The face contains thinner skin and lesser oils deeming it a more sensitive area. There are a variety of products on the market specifically designed as beard care essential. It is important to find products that work well for your hair and skin needs to keep you winning in your “beard game”.

Brush Your Beard

Trim Your Beard

Condition Your Beard

Before washing your beard use a boar bristle brush to exfoliate the surface. For best results brush slowly against and across the grain, then use a softer bristle to brush in a circular motion to stimulate blood flow to hair follicles for growth promotion.

This step does not have to be done daily. If you are unable to trim your beard yourself, find a local skilled barber that could assist with your trimming and grooming needs.

After washing, condition your beard. This will detangle, soften, and hydrate the hair as well as prevent itching.

10

HEIGHT MAGAZINE

Use Beard Oils & Balms Thoroughly massage in beard oil or balms instead of creams. Oils are lighter on the hair and coats the skin leaving it hydrated and protected.

Style Your Beard Once the oil or balm is applied, brush and style your beard with a boar brush careful to not over brush.

Here is an added list of types of products that may assist on your “beard gamejourney:

WASH YOUR BEARD Many men are unaware that the beard hoards particles and debris; therefore, it is essential that a proper wash routine is established to keep hair and face clean. Using a mild or natural beard wash, work up a lather and apply to face washing thoroughly at least twice. One application removes product build up, dirt, and grime; second application cleanses and washes away impurities. Patting the beard dry or blow drying on cool setting protects the beard from damage.

Quarantined Hair Care Protective Hairstyles Tips for maintaining healthy hair during quarantine.

The concept of protective hairstyles is to protect natural hair by limiting the stress of environmental factors on natural hair by keeping hair hidden or covered in order to reduce ongoing manipulation. Protective styles not only offer great ways to protect the hair, but are also considered a key to growth and healthier hair. These styles are relatively low maintenance and while some are unable to schedule regular hair appointments during quarantine, they offer an alternate solution to hair woes. Although wearing protective styles may offer an avenue of convenience, they are not automatically good for the hair. Understanding hair care before selecting a style is essential. Make sure to give proper attention to natural hair prior to installation of protective style. Hair should be cleaned, deep- conditioned and moisturized to make sure it can actually go the distance without damage. Protective styles should be well maintained and worn for a recommended 4 to 6 weeks to ensure the health of the hair. It is favorable to know your hair type/texture and to be aware of the products that work well for your hair. An initial step to caring for your coils is to regularly shampoo and condition the hair, applying treatments as needed to replace moisture. This will help keep the hair strong and healthy. Hair needs and types play a vital role in shampoo selection. Listed below are different types of shampoos and their usage benefits: 1.

Clarifying Shampoo: Deep cleanser, recommended as a first shampoo to remove dirt and debris, breakdown product build-up, and reduce oil from your scalp and hair.

2.

Acid Balanced Shampoo: Promotes healthy PH balance for scalp and hair.

3.

Conditioning Shampoo: Offers Moisture and protein agents. Best choice for those who wear braid and twist styles.

4.

Sulfate-Free or Low Sulfate Shampoos: Recommended for those that color their hair, causing no fading in color application.

For best results, the hair should go through two cycles of shampoo, rinse thoroughly, then apply conditioner. There are variations in conditioners as well as shampoos: ` 1. Moisturizing Conditioners contain a moisture retention ingredient called humectant. Humectants absorb and retain moisture. These heavy, cream conditioners are applied to the hair and require a set time of 15 to 20 minutes to extend its miracle working virtue. 2.

3.

Instant Conditioners are applied to shampooed hair, combed thru, and rinsed leaving the hair soft and manageable. Moisturizers are designed to restore the hair to a normal PH-balance. Surface Conditioners are great for braids, weaves and locks. It provides moisture and reduces build-up on the hair.

There are a number of products and variations to choose from. These are just a few suggestions to narrow the search when looking for the right shampoo and conditioner to maintain healthy hair before and during the adorning of a protective style. Additional moisture supplements for your protective style includes topical treatments. These treatments are an additive for hair that has suffered dehydration and used to lock moisture in each strand. It’s important to know that a healthy hydrated body is the key to healthy hair. The more water hydration your body intakes the more beneficial it is for your hair as well as your skin. Maintaining the vitality and vibrancy of your protective style should include wrapping your hair with a silk or satin scarf or bonnet, this will protect your hair and add longevity to your style. Not to mention, it also keeps hair away from the face which can cause breakouts. A silk or satin pillowcase is also recommended as an alternative if your preference does not include a scarf or bonnet. Well ladies, there you have it! A quick guide to hair maintenance during lockdown. We will all get through this period of uncertainty one strand at a time. Be fierce, be healthy, and b.e.a.utiful even in this crisis. “Just let your soul glow through your beautifully coiled coifs.

Revelations Words by Omar Tyree

The Oldhead Speaks

I

n the tradition of the eye-opening and ear-popping poetry and protest music of Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, James Brown and Marvin Gaye, celebrated West Philadelphian-born book writer, journalist, poet and filmmaker, Omar Tyree, drops the perfect record at the perfect time in America. Highlighting verses from the final chapter of the Bible, the 51-year-old writer interprets an urgent need for those with voices and a platform to not only speak out on social media, broadcast news programs, podcast interviews and at national protests and rallies, but to speak out on original records and in books with the defiance and wisdom that paints yet another chapter of cultural and political history in our turbulent country. And he does so over a thick and harmonious grove, produced by KDN Beats, buffered by the angelic voice of soul singer, Dajulyn Wallace. Taking notes and elements from a long and colorful history of black vocal delivery, from the inner-city street corners of Philly to the southern church pulpits of Atlanta, Tyree adds a heavy dose of echo panning to make sure we hear his every word, multiple times. “This is the type of old-school music a lot of young people are not really familiar with anymore,” Tyree states. “Of course, the first and second generations of hip-hop artists know it, but now we’re on to a third and fourth generation of hip hop, who will likely hear this style of

music for the first time.” Calling himself “The Oldhead,” Tyree reveals that Revelations is actually the close-out record on a compilation album entitled, The Last Summer, created to document the thoughts and reactions to the Coronavirus, Racial Injustice, and the current state of the world in year 2020. But as Tyree states in a chamber of seamless echoes, the young boahs with voices to speak on a record have no idea how to respond to what is going on. So, it is The Oldhead to the rescue. And the seasoned Philadelphia writer, best known for the urban classic novel Flyy Girl, says he is just getting started. “I got more than a dozen records coming this summer with some established artists and some new artists, and every single song is dope and meaningful,” he boasts. “And if Revelations does the work of getting the word out, then we’re all about to see and hear it.” Tyree says he plans to release a new song snippet from The Last Summer compilation every two weeks in June and July until the full LP is complete in August.

T

he team of HEIGHT Magazine took full advantage of the opportunity to travel to Miami Florida to participate in the unforgettable and electrifying events surrounding the nationally televised Super Bowl LIV. A team full of excitable members displaying childlike anxiousness coupled with gorgeous subtropical climates of South Florida made for a recipe for ecstasy. HEIGHT magazine covered the 21st Annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration founded by Melanie Few. Mrs. Few

turned a “few” heads as she graced the red carpet adorned in a chic green and blue dress, accented with shimmering geometric embellishments. Other honorees, entertainers, and musical artists such as the NFL choir, Le’Andria Johnson, Travis Greene, Yolanda Adams, Melvin Crispell III, and Commissioned swaggered through dripping sauce on the crimson tapestry giving us a taste of the rainbow. Funnyman Rickey Smiley was chosen as this years host and as usual, he moved the crowds into roar of laughter with his southern appeal, raw humor, and personal authenticity. Among the celebs that walked away with awards for the evening were NFL players Quinnen Williams and younger

brother Quincy Williams recipients of the Faith into Action Award. The night was sensational. Every performance was pure perfection arousing the crowd represented by an array of generations with soulful melodies of praise. The night was so impressionable that the team is in anticipation for the upcoming year’s celebration as it is expected to be just as if not more sophisticated and exemplary.

Financial Health During COVID-19 Written by Shelton Brown Photo by Curtis Lawrence

C

OVID 19 has compromised the physical health and wellness of many individuals all over the world. Consequently, with medical aspects and preventative safety measures at the forefront its easy to overlook financial concerns juxtaposed to physical health. During this tumultuous period, health obviously takes precedent over any other concern. However, practicing methods and strategies to maintain financial health may rank secondary to the cause. Solidifying finances aids or assists in the preparation of seemingly surprising life events.

Boost Your Emergency Fund

I

f working from home has become the new normal, consider boosting your emergency fund. Working from home coupled with environmental restrictions provides the opportunity to readjust your savings plan and increase your funds. Take full advantage of this opportunity as the ability to purchase “in storeis limited causing an accumulation of disposable income and reduction in impulse bargains. Also, commuting or traveling to work has become obsolete for some at this time. Money saved, as a result of decreased fuel purchases could also be added to the fund. Avoid making large or unnecessary purchases and save any large lump sums of money that are acquired such as refunds, judgements, and settlements.

Contact Your Lenders and Landlords for Help

I

n times of uncertainty, financial strain may accompany the circumstances. If by chance you find yourself in dire financial straits or hardships and are unable to make timely payments, please contact lenders and landlords as soon as possible. Forbearances are initially offered as a temporary cessation of mortgage payments and other lenders have a willingness to assist with restructuring needs. Once stability is achieved, payment options are discussed resuming regularly scheduled payments.

When contacting the necessary parties, make sure to explain your current situation and have an alternate payment plan and an estimated time to resume normal payments in mind. Lenders are especially considerate and willing to assist when there is established credibility. When given the opportunity always pay your bills on time.

Stretch Your Savings Farther

Consider Taking Advantage of Low Interest Rates

Keep Calm and Stick to Your Investment Plan

There are no definitive responses as it pertains to duration of the work at home situation. In lieu of being riddled with the negative effects of angst and worry, discover ways to minimize expenditures and maximize reserves.

As the economy is drastically declining and unpredictability on the rise, interest rates are declining. Maintaining a good credit score affords one to take advantage of extremely low rates borrowing of all kinds.

Saving could be enhanced by eliminating nonessentials such as travel, entertainment, and restaurant dining. While more time is spent at home preparing meals, engaging in family games, or binge watching a favored series on Netflix.

In a step to better manage outstanding debt such as a mortgage debt or student loan debt, now would be a favorable time to refinance. Potentially, thousands of dollars could be accrued over the life of the loan. Although refinancing can be quite involved and a bit tedious it could ultimately prove to be beneficial over time.

An apparent impact of COVID-19 is the increased volatility of the stock market. Although it can be tempting to sell your stocks during this time of crisis, that would not be the best option. In fact, choosing to sell your stocks at this time could result in an exponential loss. It can be extremely painful to watch the value of your nest egg crumble right before your eyes. However, it is extremely likely that the market will recover. A personal requirement made with my own investment included that my contributions will rise and fall with the changing times and I vowed to remain devoted to that investment until retirement. A word of advice; visit and revisit investment plans regularly and adjust as needed. During the evaluative process make a solid investment plan and adhere to it.

The Bottom Line The world is on edge due to the COVID-19 situation, that doesn’t mean your financial health need to suffer. Be proactive, take the necessary steps to build your emergency fund before the circumstantial impacts become greater. If already affected, then take steps to assess and mitigate the long-term financial damage.

SOCIAL MEDIA The New Way To Party?

S

Written by Lauren Kelley

ince the onset in the late 1990s, social media has undeniably developed and advanced from one era to another. With each passing year, the phases of social media have evolved and become an expansive avenue for communication and entertainment drawing the attention and participation of both the blossoming and seasoned generations alike. Ranging from rambunctious ‘tweeners and spunky teens begging their parents to download TikTok to dance the latest choreographed trend, to proud grandparents posting pictures to show off their precious grandchildren. Social media has indeed become a significant part of life across all age groups. People have a natural tendency to socialize and relate, given this development they have the opportunity to create their own personal space that allows them to connect with family and friends near and far, share in the celebrations of life events, network for the purposes of promoting businesses, or just simply taking part in the entertainment of it all such as posting selfies or enjoying a good laugh from meme’s and GIFs. With the world being on the fritz and quarantine now part of the routines of life; social media provides an alternative space for people to creatively engage in virtual festivities. “Stressors and pressures of gatherings have been removed with the relaxed conditions accompanied by the quarantine period.” Absent is the worry to choose the perfect outfit, to make sure every coil is neatly in place or perfectly groomed, or to have that face “beat to the gods”. There is a virtual house party going on and you’re invited. Seize your devices! Grab your phones, computers, tablets, or others and log into the hottest event on the social media platform of choice. Most recently, people from all over the world have tuned in to Instagram, Facebook, and Zoom to participate in live concerts, battles between music legends, and other gatherings while in the safety and comforts of their homes. With social distancing in place as a guideline to safety from COVID-19, stay at home orders has been in full effect. This led to the cancellation of many events and social gatherings. Creatively, a number of entertainment artists have utilized social media platforms to unite thousands of people, engaging them in the world of entertainment from one safe haven to another. Local artists and well known celebrities have partnered for the cause as they continued sharing their creativity while inspiring their fans from afar. Virtual social gatherings include church services, where praises ring and words of inspiration are spoken, Dj battles, where intense battles between producers are witnessed and participation to vote encouraged, and live parties draw the attention of party goers everywhere as they tune in to experience club vibes as the mixing and mastering of music may rouse a few dance moves. Each live session provides a carefree opportunity to escape the four walls of confinement to take a moment to indulge.

To gain some insight into this new wave, an interview was conducted with North Carolina’s own Deshawn Turner aka DJ Diesel. DJ Diesel’s love for music began at an early age as he was drawn to the sultry sounds of vinyl pierced by the needle as it rotated on the circular platform of the turntables. He studied the creative technique and form of DJ Skribble during his many showcases on MTV. Inspired by the charismatic display and Skribble’s ability to engage the crowd, Diesel was convinced that the work of a disc jockey was his calling. At the impressionable age of 7, he began to study this craft as he observed others in their element. He developed his artistic abilities and technical skills to understand both the creative aspects of making new musical beats and tracks, and the technical aspects of using mixing consoles, audio equipment, digital audio equipment and other music gear. He began to practice to perfection just for the love of it. Soon that love turned into passion and passion into purpose fueled by adversity and strife through the struggles of a driven college youngster who used this gift as a means to overcome. Taking heed to the advice of his father who encouraged him to use what he had to generate steady streams of income, DJ Diesel decided to expend a school refund check as a self-investment. His investment has reaped an 11+ year career and he is loving every minute of it. In the interview process, DJ Diesel presented as a kind-hearted, down to earth young king who was eager to discuss his role as a DJ and explain how he is finding ways to continue doing what he loves during these times of uncertainty. HM: DJ Diesel, what do you love most about being a DJ? DJ Diesel: What I love most is being able to take people out of their problems in life for a moment and provide nothing but fun and/or memories! I like to think of myself as a therapist. People come to an event and my job is to curate the vibes (tone) of the night. HM: How has the quarantine affected your professional life? DJ Diesel: In many ways! Of course, money wise. I’ve had multiple weddings, proms, and events cancelled due to this. But the silver lining in this is I get a chance to tap into my TRUE fan base by going live on IG and Facebook. This allows me to know my market value and what I can offer to people who are looking to book me. This has also given me the chance to showcase my skills! Many of the events I do are private so people don’t get to really see how I work. This time has allowed people to see the difference between the competition and I as well. HM: With social media becoming the new way to party during this time, what inspired you to take part?

DJ Diesel: What inspired me the most to take part, besides being able to see my market share is seeing the connections that are being made. Everyone has their phones in their hands. If I can have someone open up their phone to look for me, that’s a win! People are zooming JUST to watch “Diesel” go live and having the nostalgic feeling of being at homecoming or the club. Originally, I wanted nothing to do with the online party because I’m giving away my predominant services for FREE and allowing other DJs access to take my ideas and or style. HM: What changed your mind about giving your musical services for free? DJ Diesel: Seeing how much the culture has changed and the positive responses, I couldn’t allow myself not to be a part. Also, it gives me a chance to sharpen my skills and not be so predictable. HM: Have you seen an increase in followers since the online party scene has become more popular? DJ Diesel: ABSOLUTELY! The first time I did an “IG party” I had over 8K people click on my profile! My page has never seen that much traffic at one time. That let me know my market share. Since then, my followers have gone from 4K to 8K in two weeks. I think now that other DJs have caught on and see the power available, the market has been saturated. DJs are now working together to create sanctioned events so we can all SHARE our followers by having time slots.

HM: Do you think this is something you will continuously take part in once the shelter in place has been lifted? DJ Diesel: Most likely yes but with a twist. It’s nothing like being inside of the club, smelling the drinks, feeling the bass, and dressing up. You can’t get that fully from an online party. But it’s still a venue to grow your brand and showcase your talent. I think once shelter in place is lifted, we will see a turn in the music being played. I think we’ll see more R&B, soul, etc. To clean the house or relax to compared to the “turn up” and club scenes. During these difficult and uncertain times make sure to enjoy activities that ease the mind and relax the soul. If the musical arena is considered a happy place, partake and enjoy the melodious acoustics presented by way of social media. Support the local DJs by following their flow in these live streaming events while dancing the night away, toasting with friends, and sharing time with family. Regard it not robbery to show appreciation to the DJs for their craftiness, creativity, and cadence, in their contribution to the cause giving the people something to step to making this time a little easier to endure. Chef Monica LIFESTYLE within the Citrus World The Citrus Family is one of my favorite fruit families.

E

ach time I cook I always keep a bundle of fresh citrus fruit for finishing my dishes. I love fruit in this category for a number of reasons. One, the colors are amazing, secondly, they yield some bright flavors and, additionally I just believe it brightens and completes each of my dishes. The special touch from the squeeze of an acidic flavor from the right selection from the citron family can raise your

eyebrows when taking the first bite of the dish to final morsel of goodness off your plate. The nutritional benefits are essential during the COVID19 turn of events as our bodies will need an immune boosting swift kick in the mouth and some consistent meal therapy as we lovingly plan our menus. When you look at the scope of fruits available one thing remains constant; they are

rich in Vitamin C. This plays a vital role in healing our wounds, it is a critical antioxidant that our human bodies require to shut down all those free radicals roaming inside us wreaking havoc and delivering us bad news at the doctor’s office. If you do not believe me. Take some time to read the research that is available online at the U.S. Department Health and Human Services, especially as it pertains to vitamin C and boosting your immune system. https:// ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminCHealthProfessional/ Now this may shed some light and provide some understanding as to why I am the Chef who has been touting #Eat2Livelonger for the last 10 years. Now, as I tell all of my “Food Fans” keep everything in moderation because too much of one thing is never a good a thing. Remember to always consult with your doctor before making any drastic changes to your health or diet. As much as I love an acidic flair on my flavor profile, my dental hygienist is not a fan because too much citrus or “acid” as I so lovingly call these beautiful flavors is a bit much too much on my palette and teeth. Express Yourself

With An All Natural 3 Ingredient Face/Body Scrub

Written by Krystal Carr Sancho photo by Curtis Lawrence

A

lthough a famous chorus lines from a TLC hit suggests that “No, I don’t want no scrub”, body or facial scrubs may be just the type of scrub that one can appreciate. Body or facial scrubs are physical exfoliants that routinely doff away dead skin cells. The “scrub” feel is typically attributed to a combination of sugar and/or salt suspended in an oil base. In normal processes, the skin consistently rejuvenates as dead skin cells rise to the surface and naturally shed. Over time, this process slows causing a buildup of dead cells on

the surface of the skin. The goal of a body or facial scrub is to exfoliate, to remove dead skin cells and encourage the healthy production of new ones. This type of mechanical exfoliation not only smooths, softens, and polishes the skin but also draws out impurities, promotes efficient circulation, and clears congestion that may cause blemishes.

Here is what you need: •

Fresh lemon juice (or an essential oil fragrance of choice)

¼ cup of Coconut oil (or other oil substitutes such as jojoba, almond, or grape seed)

1 cup of sugar (brown or white)

8 oz mason jar

Steps simplified: 1. Measure out 1 cup of sugar and place into a mixing bowl. 2. Measure out the oil, combine with the sugar. 3. Mix oil and sugar until mixture is light and fluffy adding more or less oil until you reach desired consistency. 4. Add in lemon or essential oil. 5. Pour scrub into a clean, dry 8 oz mason jar

HOMESCHOOL Adapting to the Confines of Distance Learning

As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps through our nation like a swirling vortex, it carries with it the resounding echo of these words, “No gatherings of 50 or more for now”. This results in a huge disruption in the lives of people all around the world. Of the more prominent and impactful of this break in normalcy is the temporary closure of schools. School personnel, parents, and students alike feel the rousing waves of this unpredictable storm. As many were preparing for the much needed pause in educational endeavors, while looking forward to the indulgence of pleasurable yet restful activities associated with “Spring Break”, none could have prepared for the reality that was gradually unfolding. What would have typically been an elimination of a day by day calendar mark off in the normal countdown to Summer routine, became a progressive withdrawal of weeks, then months, and ultimately deer in the

headlights question marks as to what the future has in store for our educational systems. “School Days” have inadvertently become “School Daze” as the normalcy of daily routines continue displacing and morphing into unfamiliar, unconventional, and unpredictable patterns of educable achievement with each passing day. There was no agenda, schedule, or lesson plan that alerted the people of the world of the impending requirements of “homeschooling”. Unlike anything “we the people” have ever experienced, this pandemic has shifted the world into a commonality like none other. Never could we have imagined this type of happening in our lifetime; howbeit, we as a resilient nation of people continually increase our awareness and adaptability, as we grasp the reins of uncertainties while supporting one another in this crisis. An establishment of safety guidelines thrust a collegiate

level concept called e-learning or distance learning into the public and private school arena. Rationale considered behind this approach demonstrates perceived best practices as an avenue to ensure safety measures in alignment with the “social distancing” era, while promoting continuity of the educational processes of instruction and acquisition. While teachers and students remain in the safety confines and comfortability of their homes, they adopt and adapt to alternative means of interacting with students using variations of advanced technological approaches. Applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Supports which were once reserved for collegiate and elite professional access has become the new normal for educational and quasi professional interaction. This process has been nothing short of overwhelming and frustrating, to say the least, to all parties involved. The disciplined responsibility to connect and engage has been an impending burden that has shifted to teachers, students, and parents alike. In addition, to the revamping of the educational arena, there is also the dealings with the implications in the disruption of social norms. A suspension of day to day interaction and activities among the student body, among friends, colleagues, co-workers, and associates have minimized amiable relationships to an updated “strictly business” status. Ultimately, structure and routine was the baby that was inevitably thrown out with the bath water with the induction of this new wave of teaching and learning. Educators are met with the task of introducing, encouraging, and transporting traditionally grounded students to participate in riding this massive, unpredictable cyclone of change. Whereas parents clutch the cordage of the roving vehicle as they are faced with the challenging idiosyncrasies of modern day computer software programs, curriculum requirements, and academic theories amidst implementing new “homeschool” routines for their children, all the while attempting to manage a healthy balance between work and home. With all of the facts in place, there is yet a question that remains. How are students and parents adapting? They are surprisingly and creatively adjusting even through periods of uncertainty, inadequacy, discouragement, and exhaustion. This new way of life was sprung upon all causing rips and tears in the threads of our neatly crafted quilts leaving gaping holes in the fabric of our core existences. Home offices and kitchen tables have become the new classroom environment as parents have assumed the role of classroom manager and mediator between their children and teachers. Screen time has taken on a new meaning as no longer represents down time, but has an extended definition to support distance learning. Parents struggle to appropriate assignment completion among multiple children as coursework varies by grade level and intensity. Talk about a full plate…as if that isn’t enough to digest, the epitome of mile markers as it pertains to the completion of the preliminary educational career has been dismantled. Participation in traditional commencement ceremonies have been halted and graduating seniors are plagued with the reality of the absence of one the most coveted milestone experiences of their entire lives. In conjunction with perceived negatives; however, there are potential positives. Students are afforded the opportunity to participate in

exceptional methods of learning, to acquire skill sets that correspond with the ever evolving technological age, and to achieve new levels of adaptability necessary for personal and professional growth. Parents benefit through the redistribution of time to enhance the family structure and to build and rebuild foundational bonds as they learn from, are guided by, and navigate through the days in the lives of their children through these measures. Parents who have unconsciously chipped away at some of their responsibilities and involvements in learning processes now have a chance at redemption to become an integral part of their children’s educational career. The expectations have evolved from offering the occasional assisting hand with a class project or helping with a few math equations here or there to a true to life conceptual conglomeration of nature and nurture. To offer insight on an effective continuation of the process of “homeschooling” here are a few tips of encouragement:

7. Consider journaling. Documenting the journey could be relieving and healing for both you and your children. Write about everything and create a safe space for your children to express their emotions during this time. 8. Engage in family social activities (movie nights, game nights, vision boards, exercise, gardening, etc.) There is much to be commended to teachers, parents, and students all over the world that are involved in this new undertaking. These parties have completely shuffled their conventional style of teaching, learning, and managing with the sudden onset of change. Our hearts go out students that have experienced the loss of activities such as sporting events, proms, and even graduations. Even in loss , there is yet much to celebrate. Celebrate the unexpected gift of time....time to make

more memories with your children and loved ones, time to be still and enjoy the simplicities of life, time to breathe as we inhale the fresh and new and exhale the stale and old, time to release from the mundane day to day stressor, time to simply… be and enjoy the splendor that life has to offer. Parents and students… keep striving and adapting, pushing and believing. You are doing a phenomenal job!

1. Maintain a positive outlook and ensure the well-being of your children. Establish a safe-net support system consisting of other parents and/or friends in whom to confide moments of victories/defeats and to exchange successful tactics/strategies. 2. Be mindful that children also experience frustrations just as adults; however, they may be insufficiently equipped to manage or possess the tools necessary to cope with their feelings effectively. Be patient and understanding, make these learning curves easier to control through the loving and caring guidance of your affirmations and collaboration.

3. Develop a schedule and adhere to it. Structure and routine are an integral pieces in the puzzle of learning processes. 4. Allow time to adjust as necessary. Distance learning is a new concept to both children and parents. 5. Be attentive. Listen to your children’s concerns, pay attention to nonverbal cues, build in breaks as needed. 6. Keep constant communication with teachers. Educators appreciate active interests of the parent as they are invested in the success of your children. HEIGHT MAGAZINE

Wellness Tips STAY in a posture of prevention

46

HEIGHT MAGAZINE

ere are my Top 13 ‘Ounce of Prevention’ tips:

1.

Stay Hydrated – rinsing away toxicity internally at least every 30 minutes is a top of the list along with going to the bathroom when nature calls instead of ignoring the signals.

2.

Do not touch ANYTHING in public with bare hands – door handles, the bathroom door, the soap dispenser, the faucet, elevator buttons, the subway rails. Use a latex or nitrile glove or a napkin or tissue.

3.

Frequent Hand Washing – We talk a lot about hand washing but the correct way is to sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY two times. Grab a paper towel to lock and open bathroom stall door, dispense soap, turn on faucet, and dry hands. Wash hands upon entering buildings, and your home. Sanitize your hands when entering your car or office. Encourage everyone in your family to carry sanitizer.

4.

Sanitize Frequently – When shaking hands or coming in contact with surfaces. Make your own sanitizer with equal parts of Alcohol, Wintergreen Alcohol and Witch Hazel or Peroxide. On surfaces, White Vinegar and Peroxide are germ assassins. So as the stores are getting low on Clorox, Lysol & Alcohol stock-up on White Vinegar.

5.

Cover your Eyes – Just as the eyes are the gateway to the soul, they are also an open orifice. Wear glasses or goggles while in public like on a bus, train, or crowded places.

6.

Plug your Ears – The ears are an entry point of infection. Plug with a small square of tissue NOT Earbuds, however a headset covering the entire ear like Beats or similar brands will suffice.

7.

Clean your Nose – When bathing use a washcloth or a wet paper towel and your finger to clean the inside of your nose. You may be shocked to discover dirt in your nostrils. And then blow into the wet towel and clean again. It is time to blow the dust off of your Neti-Pot and use it every other day to rinse the nasal passages.

8.

Bathing – Bathe at night EVERY day. Do NOT dream of laying in bed after you have been here-there-andeverywhere with germs on your body. Use a Natural Antibacterial Soap like Dr. Bronner’s Tea Tree, or Peppermint soap. Use a Clean towel Everyday. We get 3 million new skin cells everyday and the ones from today go down the drain and end up on the towel. Do NOT re-use.

9.

Clothing – Put dirty clothes in a closed laundry basket or draw-string bag daily. Do NOT repeat clothing worn the day before. Wash clothes every few days.

10. Eat the Rainbow – Increase the Fruit and Veggies on your plate. Minimize Starch and Avoid Sweets altogether as they tear down the body’s defense mechanism. Kick the coffee, soda, alcohol habits cold turkey as these drag down your immunity.

11. Strengthen Your Immune System – Now is the time to do EVERYTHING right! Increase your Vitamins Three-fold. Exercise. Go to bed at 10pm or before. The worst thing that could have happened to America is Daylight Savings Time where we now lose an hour of sleep. Do NOT lose this hour!! The body needs to fight off invaders and that can only happen while sleeping. 12. Pay Attention to your Body – If you don’t feel your best and you do not have a fever, don’t just go to bed early and eat chicken soup, DO something about it before crawling into bed…Up your Vitamin C and Cod Liver Oil, chop a couple of garlic cloves and swallow them, make ginger/honey/lemon/cayenne pepper tea and then go to bed early. 13. Calm the Fear Factor — Being afraid and worrying will sink an immune system faster than any virus. Monitor who and what you listen to for information. 14. Close the toilet seat cover before flushing – if you don’t everything in it will splash 50 feet around the bathroom. That is why there is a cover. 15. Take off your shoes at the door – Please do NOT drag around your daily steps past your threshold. Shoes OFF!!! 16. Calm the Fear Factor — Being afraid and worrying will sink an immune system faster than any virus. Monitor who and what you listen to for information. I don’t want you to buy in to conspiracy theories like Black folk are not being infected, or it was created in a lab. It matters not if either of these things are true, what does matter is that Corona Virus is here and it is a Menace to society. Be vigilant with your health. STAY in a posture of Prevention. That is all for now. Praying for your Perfect Health…Dr. Brookshire

with the World on Pause and routine the interruption of that perpetual cycle causes bewilderment and stagnation. Many people across the globe felt this shift in normalcy as the pandemic, COVID 19, plagued the U.S. and other countries causing a halt in normal daily activities. Winter was seemingly the season as the climate of “social distancing” was the “Jack Frost” of society that glaciated the livelihood of communities everywhere. Signs near and far throughout the lands resounded a familiar tone… “Temporarily closed until further notice”. This new reality caused a damper in the schedules of many forcing exploratory and innovative measures in completing otherwise simple and convenient tasks. Among the many closures due to COVID 19 were the desistance of fitness centers.

Parks, gyms, fitness studios and other public places resulted in reduced opportunities for physical activities-especially for people not able to exercise at home. Social distancing further affected people’s ability to participate in extracurricular physical activities, especially during the restrictions of movement due to the shelter in place orders. How do closures effect exercise routines? At a time when working at home and homeschooling children have become the new normal, it may become quite challenging to reinvent, reestablish, or restructure exercise regimens. Coronavirus-related concerns have

affected dietary habits, that led to higher caloric intake that promoted weight gain while many people engaged in “comfort chowing” to cope with fear, anxiety, stress, financial hardships, sadness, boredom, and isolation- all in which may have proven to have had a negative effect on diets, physical heath, and mental well-being. Why is exercise important? Within all things essential, regular exercise also carries that essential factor especially under extenuating circumstances. During the COVID-19 pandemic it is especially crucial to remain physically active, here are a few reasons why: •

Exercise enhances the immune system-helps body fight off infections.

Exercise may assist in weight gain prevention-helps burn extra calories.

Exercise reduces stress and anxiety- helps build mood boosters and build emotional resilience.

Exercise improves sleep- helps you fall asleep and improves quality of sleep.

How can I stay physically active during this time? There are a plethora of ways to remain active, even while practicing social distancing and even when the gyms are closed. The American Heart Association suggests that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderately-intense physical activity, or at least 75 minutes of vigorously- intense physical activity per week. Here are a few suggestions to get your body moving:

Exercise with family- Exercise provides a great opportunity for fun with the family. Walks, bike rides, dance parties, or yard games like basketball, volleyball, or kickball are ideal examples of household activity participation.

Get outside-Walking, bicycling, and jogging can provide exposure to fresh air while remaining at a safe distance from others.

Follow along with online exercise videos- Whatever your preference, dance, cardio training, core training, ab training, or any other type of workout you may choose, you could most likely find a service that offers online videos.

trainers offer virtual sessions online to meet your needs. •

Challenge yourself- Set an exercise goal

Track calorie-burning chores- Mowing the lawn, working in the garden, washing the car, or cleaning out the garage provides excellent opportunities to burn calories and build muscle.

The bottom line Despite the fact that it takes some effort to form and adapt to new fitness routines, regular physical activity can help progress your health and well-being during the outbreak.

Take a virtual class- If your financial resources allow, some personal

CHUCK D

More Relevant than Ever Written by Tammie Tolbert· Photos by Curtis Lawrence

s I sat down to write this story, I said to myself, it is damn near impossible to find a correct written introduction for such an incredibly intelligent, talented, successful and forward thinking man. I honestly didn’t think words could capture the full scope of what this man’s life and his broad spectrum of musical, visual and written work did to help change the world for the better. Chuck D, born in New York, New York as Carlton D. Ridenhour, is like no other digital music pioneer, best-selling author, activist, sought after speaker, solid entrepreneur, Music & TV Producer and forward conscious thinker in the entire world. He has done so much to elevate and awaken people’s minds around the world to social and political injustices and he continues to do so to this very day in 2020. In today’s current cultural climate with Black Lives Matter leading the worldwide call to change systemic oppression against African Americans in the United States and worldwide, it turns out that Chuck D’s former music and social activist work is more relevant than ever. If you don’t believe me, just research his current stats, because believe me, they are forever growing an evolving.

Tammie T. Tolbert

According to Wikipedia, in 1985, Chuck D co-founded the now Hall of Fame group, Public Enemy with rapper Flavor Flav. It’s also been stated that the group originally started in 1982 at Adelphi University in Long Island. Either way, Public Enemy’s music purpose was to rap and bring awareness about the systemic social injustices plaguing African-American people in the United States. Chuck D’s group also had a heavy disdain for mainstream media. Mainstream media often depicted African

Americans in a very negative way and Public Enemy rapped about it. Though this music / rap platform, Chuck D of Public Enemy was able to spread his messages about social injustices and social reform not only through music, but through visual and written art too. His book, “This Day In Rap and Hip Hop History,” turned Chuck D into a best-selling author!

The success of Public Enemy ignited a fire in so many people who otherwise felt helpless to have their voices heard. Public Enemy’s resonated with so my African-Americans and other cultures that were fighting systemic racism in the United States. As a testament to how important the message of Chuck D and Public Enemy was, Public Enemy has sold millions of records and albums. His groups album sales doesn’t even reflect the the records he collaborated with others on. Others like Ice Cube, Janet Jackson, Run-DMC, John Mellencamp, Kool Mo Dee, etc. Chuck D’s strong music talents have been sought after by TV Stations such as ESPN, the ESPY Award Show, The TV Show “Blues”, the LeBron James docu-series, “Shut Up and Dribble!” and much more. Chuck D’s belief in his message and his dedication to getting it out to the masses built him a solid career that continues to flourish today! Chuck D’s current projects through his music group “SpitSlam” continue to bring awareness and continues to challenge social injustice worldwide. As a meticulous professional and artist, as Chuck D himself has stated, “Art can set you free!” These few accolades that I have written about don’t even touch the scope of the magnitude of what Chuck D and Public Enemy have done to change our world for the better.

he relationship that can exists between siblings is one of the most mystifying yet most delightful situations one can encounter. At times, this enigma can often be misinterpreted, misconstrued, or misunderstood. However, this is one connection that has stood the test of time. This peculiar relation encompasses everything from tiffs to truces, from bitter feuds to sweet memories, and from frivolous interaction to serious engagement. Biological nature equips siblings to share a reciprocal affection that develops from years of living together. Oftentimes, your sibling is that one confidante that is the keeper of your innermost feelings. He or she is the one that helps sort out your confusion, the one in which pains of first heartbreak is expressed, and also

the one you disclose callous remarks about parents and other members of the family. Siblings may in fact be the only people who never leave even when others walk away. They accompany through thick and thin, through good and bad, through the best of times and through the worst of times, time after time. As a result, it is our duty to express adoration through “labors of love” and become or remain that doting brother or sister to our correlative. Fantasia Barrino, in all her glory, has managed to remain a doting sister as she consistently expresses undeniable love and affection for her siblings. Life as an entertainer is demanding and taxing, to say the least; nonetheless she thinks it not robbery to devote time ,energy, attention, and maybe a few perks as she uniquely defines the labor of love to those she calls “brother”. Friends, how many of us have them? Strong friendships can closely mimic that of the sibling relationship minus the biological attachment. Some friendships may even create a seemingly closer adhesiveness as these unique and loving bonds are formed solely by choice. Friendships may blossom on the basis of similarities, beliefs or shared interest. No matter what the attracting factor, well develop friendships can play a vital part in an individual’s well-being, such as, increase life’s satisfactions and happiness, enhance one’s ability to cope with life stressors, and decrease vulnerability to illnesses. A friend is someone you feel comfortable supporting and accepting, and someone with whom you share a bond of trust and loyalty. In good times and in bad times, a friend is on your side forever… That’s what friends are for.
