WATER RISK

Hong Kong Vitoria Habour coastline at 2030

Rising sea levels will swallow up land

As a coastal city, Hong Kong is prone to the negative impact of storm surge from tropical cyclone. In past history of Hong Kong, the highest casualty from tropical cyclone was due to storm surge. The typhoons in 1906 and 1937 both brought significant storm surge to the territory, resulting in more than 10,000 deaths in each case!

Pridected Hong Kong Vitoria Habour coastline at 2050

Based on the tide data collected in the Victoria Whampoa

Harbour from 1954 to 2019, the mean sea level in the harbour rose at a rate of 31 mm per decade. In the scenario of high rate of emission of greenhouse gases, the mean sea level will increase by about 0.98 m above the average of 1986-2005 by the end of the 21st century. Such a rise in sea level will increase the risk of inundation to the low-lying coastal areas in Hong Kong due to approaching tropical

cyclones in future.

THE WATER CAPICITY The relationship between landuse & flooding As human population expands and develops how we use our land has an increasing impact on flooding risks. Increased development (such as buildings and pavement) prevents water from being absorbed back into the ground. As impervious surface (surface that is covered by non-natural objects) increases the ground is able to absorb less and less water and more water runs off and accumulates in non-natural areas. This can cause flooding as the water does not have natural areas to infiltrate into. It is very important to find a solution even there are extremely densed allocation of buildings in Hong Kong, to let the city itself absorb/store water.

THE SUBMERGING CITY Whampoa AS Whampoa is near the sea, it is predicted to be submerge in a foreseeable future, it is worrying that in there are 88 blocks and a total number of 10,431 flats with around 40,000 residents currently in Whampoa garden. There are a well knowned shopping center with an outer appearance of a 360-foot long boat located at Whampoa garden called ‘The Whampoa’, To promote the idea of a new kind of living mode, the iconic image for the boat is a great start, to preserve the attraction, the mall next to it, ‘Gourmet Place, The Whampoa’ is chosen for reconstruction.

Shiawase inspired by the ancient Japanese temple, with a pleasantly quiet atmosphere. The aligned Torri gates and the white LED simulating natural ray guide people to an immersive experience before entering the temple. The roof design of the bar referenced ‘Dou Gong’, a traditional architectural structure in Japan. With the subtle light emitted between the gap of it, rebuild the grandeur of the Japanese temple. Washed granolithic as floor with a stone path on above, Lights are gradually getting dimmer till the dining area, connect the harbour and the interior. The Original The Original The Ricky’s Kitchen at 9 Wing Hong Street, is the first restaurant, as it located in an industrial area, we used concrete on the ceiling, wall and the floor to match the surrounding. There are also a lot of cyber elements, long led light strips are around the shop, also with the help of the mirrors, the line extended. The entrance is a circular window, which the bamboo in front of it can be the view from the interior and exterior. There are ripple patterned-glass on the ceiling when the bamboo reflected from the ceiling, it seems the world is inverted and the bamboo is growing on the water.

Village The inspiration of this restaurant is from bamboo forest and Japanese village. After entering the restaurant, the first thing you see is the long path surrounded by bamboo, the atmosphere is mysterious as you are not able to see through the whole restaurant. It is a different world from comparatively to the modern ocean terminal. Frosted glass on the left side of the bamboo forest to introduce natural light. When the LED light box lights up at the same time, it feels like a ray of outdoor feeling. The Bamboo Forest & Japanese Village There is more extraction from Japanese housing elements, including Zen, ceiling, wood material and Family crest. The zones are defined by crowed houses with different design just like a small village in Japan. The whole restaurant is using light wood, bamboo sheet and tatami to enhance the Japanese-styled-room. The first room near the entrance is reception and Sake bar, they also have their unique ceiling covered in order to define the zones. The next room is a tea house installed with two rows of wall-lightings hidden in bamboo sticks enhancing the layering. It seems that the raw material of the wall-lighting is extracted from the bamboo forest nearby. The third house is installed with a special door that able to open from four directions, left, right, top and left. This provides an opportunity for customers inside have a glance at the sight of the Vitoria Harbour, combining modern and ancient together. There is a stone stele at the corner of the path. Behind that, there is a pavilion which is located at the curved glass curtain wall at the corner of the shop facing the Victoria Harbour. The curved glass wall provides a great wide sea view. At the end is a VIP room which ceiling referenced to the shape of the Japanese temple. The hollow circle is expanded one layer at a time. This cottage is mainly checkered. It is referencing on the method of stacking rectangular wood by Tadao Ando to make it produces an effect similar to a bucket arch structure, but in fact, there is no bucket arch, just a simple square staggered stack, resulting in a modern sense of tradition.

The restaurant is surrounded by Camilla flowers, echo with the black tone with gold trim, mirror, and Arc, like a flower festival in Paris – City of Flowers. The color of Camellia - pink is extensively used in most things as a theme for brand identification, such as flower wall, marble table, chair & bench, napkin, coffee, noodle soup, and even the toilet. Also, the shades of different pink and shape of chairs and benches actually render the petals of Camilla. INTRODUCTION As Dong Guan in PRC faces the challenge of housing shortage Particularly for those young adults and the transformation of industrial spaces to residential and commercial spaces, what are the ways in which design and planning of architecture could help ease or alleviate this problem? Could inventive adaptation of conditions and creative arrangement of the collective housing provide a part of the solution? The two week design competition calls for innovative ideas in the design of a micro start-up housing. Dong Guan Urban to explore the boundaries and paradigms of collective housing and to (re)consider the relationship between a basic housing program, the needs of youths today and the high-density housing policy of Dong Guan.
