CENTENARY ANNIVERSARY (cont)

GCVO DSO TD MP, Colonel of The King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and member of parliament for Lancaster. In 1921, the national anthem was sung followed by the hymn ‘O God, our Help in Ages Past’. General Sir Archibald then addressed the assembled congregation and unveiled the memorial. On it were listed the names of fourteen men from the three parishes who died in the Great War and those of eighty-seven who also served and lived to return home. The venerable Phipps John Hornby, Archdeacon of Lancaster, gave the dedication followed by prayers and the communal singing of the hymn ‘Lead, Kindly Light’. Finally a detachment of soldiers from The King’s Own Regiment fired a salute of three volleys and buglers sounded ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’.

dedicated team which goes out watering regularly, usually in the evenings. Well done to everyone who keeps going with the watering cans. You know who you are! Have you noticed how well the new raised bed on the left of the village hall entrance is doing? The orange geums have been outstanding. Great choice of plants for our bee hotel. We are grateful for the local businesses and community support which we’ve had this year. We didn’t know if the pandemic would stop us gardening, but we have more volunteers than ever and are delighted to have such a great Bloom team. If you fancy lending a hand, please come along (with trowel) and meet the team on Tuesdays, 10:00am at Catterall Village Hall or Wednesdays, 7:00pm at Stone Cross Community Garden.

Hello everyone and after a scorching June, we wonder what July will bring? We have an exciting date for your diary: the RHS North West in Bloom judges will be visiting our village on the morning of Tues 20th July. Let’s show them what fabulous gardeners we are and that we’re proud of our village by keeping front gardens and pavements tidy. You are welcome to chat to the judges if you see them out and about. Catterall in Bloom’s main task, after preparing and planting the community garden along with the large containers throughout the village, was watering. We also have a new flowerbed at the side of the village hall where the perennials are just setting down their roots, and watering regularly is essential. Keeping the gorgeous plants alive requires a hard working and
