LOCAL BOOK LAUNCH (cont)

During that time she covered big stories (eg the opposition to the Pilling gas terminal plan, the devastating Wyre floods of the 1970s and the blaze which destroyed the Garstang CCM factory as well as the more regular goings on. Along with two other local journos of the time (Pat Seed and Tess Pickford), Angela had a ringside seat at local events. At the book launch Angela will recount some of her memories of the stories she covered.

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND

Look into my eyes, what do you see? Oh the caricature of a mesmeric hypnotist may well be attractive to writers and film makers but the reality is that a skilled hypnotherapist can be a life changing and positive influence for many. What is hypnotherapy? Well, if you break it down to a literal meaning it translates to sleep therapy, however, you are not asleep but more in a trance or deep concentration/ meditation, and it is nothing like it is portrayed in the media. All hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis. This may sound a little strange, but it is true. Let me explain a little clearer; for those of you that drive, have you ever driven to a destination and suddenly wondered how you got there, because you cannot remember anything of the journey. Have you ever been doing something and suddenly wondered how you did it, again, because you cannot remember

doing it. You have been under self-hypnosis during these events. Your conscious mind has been thinking of other things whilst your subconscious part has been keeping you safe and getting on with things. The power of the mind is so strong and complex, no-one yet fully understands its complexities or range of abilities. It is estimated, and recognised in many circles of medicine, that we only use about 10% of our brains’ (minds’) abilities. This means that 90% of our mind is what we would call the subconscious, and this is the bit that deals with the parts of you that need to work without having to think about it, your breathing, your heart-beat – all your normal bodily functions you take for granted. Hypnotherapy is a marvellous and very powerful form of help that can deal with situations that the conscious mind has difficulty processing. It’s uses are almost boundless. Don’t get the wrong idea; it cannot cure cancer or the common cold and it can’t cure a broken limb or a physical disability. It is not recommended that you should stop any prescribed medicines in favour of hypnotherapy, and it would be wrong to suggest that. Hypnotherapy should be used as complimentary to any medical issues, not a replacement. If you want to try hypnotherapy to help with any existing medical condition always talk this over with your GP first. In hypnotherapy you are always in control, you are aware of everything going on around you and you will never do anything that you don’t want to, or wouldn’t agree with, in a fully conscious state. A hypnotherapist is there to guide you through the proceedings with suggestions that are directed at the subconscious. The therapy can be used for many things, and this is a list
