The fragile blossoms of the Japanese cherry are often described as spring snow by Japanese poets. As soon as the small delicate flowers have bloomed on their capricious branches, their tiny little leaves blow like flakes through the spring air. With its early flowering and rapid transiency, the cherry blossom symbolizes the rebirth of nature and purity. During the so-called Sakura – the cherry blossom festival, an old-age Japanese tradition – the arrival of spring is celebrated. Friends and family come together under blossoming cherry trees and enjoy a Japanese picnic. This is also the case in the Amsterdamse Bos, where during the months of March and April 400 Japanese cherry trees are in full bloom. For two weeks the members of the Japanese community from the neighboring Amstelveen come here to celebrate Sakura with their loved ones. And every year more and more people from Amsterdam join them. Attracted by the beauty of the full bloom trees and the delicate scent of the small and fragile flowers. Photography: Jeroen Hofman

GOOOD FASHION
AMSTERDAM MARCH-APRIL 2019
Fashion lovers, may we have your attention? Or should we say: sustainable fashion lovers‌ As in Amsterdam the first interactive sustainable fashion museum opened its doors. On the Rokin this museum shows you how fashion is designed, made, worn, and reused. But it also demonstrates - through innovation and practical action - better ways for the fashion industry to work that allows companies, communities, and our planet to flourish. Dozens
of these innovations can be seen, felt and discovered in the museum, with a digital fashion journey as the basis of the Experience. At the end of the trip, all visitors will receive a personal Good Fashion Action Plan: a digital toolkit with tips and tricks to apply in daily life. And if that’s not enough yet, the museum also challenges everyone to be creative themselves: for example in the design studio, where visitors can design their own cradle-to-cradle

After the successful designer collaboration with Viktor and Rolf in 2006, H&M once again teamed up with a Dutch designer duo: Alexander van Slobbe and Francisco van Benthum and their brand Hacked by_. However, this time the collection tells a different story. HACKED by_ is known for its creative way of upcycling by creating a second life for leftovers from fashion production through collage techniques, embroidery, gathering, etc. They want to show that the fashion system can be changed without the ability to seduce. And with this co-work H&M shows it fully supports this effort. Hacked by_ x H&M is sold at the H&M flagship store in Amsterdam.

Power to the
flower
The theme of this year’s Keukenhof show is Flower Power. As flowers inspire people and connect them from all over the world. With bright colors, hippies, peace & music, Flower Power stands for the atmosphere of the early 70s. A beautiful theme to celebrate the 70th Keukenhof. But also, like any other year, you can enjoy the famous flower field shows, the Tulip festival, concerts, children programs a special Easter event, and many more…
Facts The estate Keukenhof And when you are here don’t forget to have a look at the estate Keukenhof. Because, did you ever realize that the park where every year the thousends of flowers come together, originates from the Golden Age? The estate Keukenhof used to belong to the famous countess Jacoba van
Beieren. Around 1865 the first plans were made for the park as it is today: an English landscape style designed by the architects Zocher. Father and son who are also responsible for the looks of the Amsterdam Vondelpark. Don’t miss it!
•Keukenhof is open 8 weeks a year (21 March – 19 May) •Keukenhof gets 1 million visitors per year •80 per cent of these visitors are not Dutch •The park measures 32 acres •Every year 7 million bulbs are planted by 40 gardeners •Bulbs delivered by more than 100 growers •Over 500 growers co-operate on the flower shows •Inspiration gardens can give good ideas to take home •There are around 100 statues in the garden

ART & CULTURE IN AMSTERDAM
THE MUSEUM OF BAGS AND PURSES: A HIDDEN GEM IN THE HEART OF AMSTERDAM
The period from 1880 to 1939 is also known as the ‘golden age’ of travelling. A rich traveller could keep his possessions in a beautiful travel set. Part of this set was the dressing case, which held the essentials needed on voyage. The dressing case mainly contained toiletries, but also travel cutlery, sewing utensils, medicines and stationery. The bottles and combs were made of precious materials including ivory, crystal, silver and mother of pearl.
Even though the Dutch are not famous for their sense of fashion, the biggest bag museum in the world is located in Amsterdam. The Museum of Bags and Purses explores the history of fashion, craft, and culture by telling many tales of this seemingly everyday accessory. Featured in The Guardian’s Top 10 ‘Best Unknown Museums in Europe,’ it is one of the true hidden gems of the city.

ART & CULTURE IN AMSTERDAM
Shared passions There is an unmistakable connection between Dutch master Vincent van Gogh and the most expensive living artist David Hockney (Great Brittain, 1937). Hockney - Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature demonstrates that the two men have some shared passions. The exhibition, shows both artist’s fascination with nature, their use
of a bright colorful pallet, and their experimental view on perspective. The Hockney - Van Gogh connection becomes especially evident in Hockney’s monumental Yorkshire landscapes. The paintings offer a clear insight into Hockney’s love of nature and reveal a link with some of Van Gogh’s most famous landscapes. The exhibition features around 120 works, including Hockney’s sketch-
books and his iPad drawings. Especially for this occasion internationally-renowned Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra has created a portrait of the artist.

De Pijp is one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods and a local’s favorite to go on any day off. There are tons of things to do in De Pijp, from strolling over the famous Albert Cuyp Market to interior and fashion shopping at one of the many boutique stores. When it comes to Amsterdam’s culinary and bar scene, De Pijp also is one of the best places to go to with lots of international kitchens, like tropical toko’s, cosy student café’s, haute-cuisine restaurants and anything in between. Because of this variety in combination with the many narrow streets and cozy terraces covered in the shade of leafy trees De Pijp sometimes is called ‘the Quartier Latin of Amsterdam’. The area, built in the second half of the 19th century, supposedly gets its name from these long narrow streets which are reminiscent of pipes. While this used to be Amsterdam’s working class neighborhood, De Pijp is now one of the hippest and most expensive areas to live in.

Brought up with the knowledge and love of Asian art and jewelry (Veldhuisen’s mother is Indonesian the curator of Indonesian art for the Rotterdam Museum), Veldhuisen understood what he had to do when he in 2010 decided to start his own brand: make a difference. 9 years later Barong Barong has 250 sale partners in more than 5 countries and presents seasonal collections with more than 60 new pieces each. Yet, despite this growth, he and his wife Banafshe still practically run the business together. For upcoming season they will launch a whole new collection: All the luck in the World, containing (ear)rings and necklaces made with Dutch ‘guldens’ (old currency). Veldhuisen: “Think lucky coins to spice up life a little. This way I can add some positive feeling to the world through my jewelry.” Curious? Just go there and have a look. Veldhuisen and Banafshe are more than happy to show you around.

LOCAL HEROES Henk-Jan Mulder
Kunsthuis Amsterdam is not just an art gallery. You can buy artworks, but also loan them. Having a masterpiece in your own home is now within reach of many people. Henk-Jan Mulder, one of the two founding brothers of Kunsthuizen, is responsible for this fantastic initiative with locations in Leiden and Amsterdam. "Me and my brother Bart started out as art enthusiasts, and gradually became collectors. We liked sharing our passion with other people. When a suitable location became available, we opened our first gallery. Kunsthuis Leiden was born and quickly became a success. One of our new locations became Kunsthuis Amsterdam." Kunsthuis Amsterdam has an impressive exposition space of nearly 300 m2. The brothers host a varied exhibition program and several events per year. Mulder: "At the Kunsthuizen we welcome people with all kinds of budgets to spend. An artwork should fit a person in terms of taste, but also in terms of money. Over the years we have gathered a diverse collection for clients to choose from. You can buy an artwork, but you can also loan it. Traditional art loan companies do not have the same level of quality as we do. At Kunsthuizen, even a young art lover can step out the door with a Damien Hirst. And you can decide to buy the artwork for the original purchase amount. This way, your loan ends up as to be an investment."

LOCAL HEROES Petra Verwaal & Sanne Overmaat
There is one store that has stolen the hearts of style lovers across town: Things I Like Things I Love, the brainchild of Petra Verwaal and Sanne Overmaat. This month the fifth location will open its doors.
VERWAAL AND OVERMAAT HAVE A TRUE KNACK FOR FINDING SPECIAL PIECES PETRA VERWAAL & SANNE OVERMAAT FOUNDERS & OWNERS OF THINGS I LIKE THINGS I LOVE
Seven years ago Verwaal and Overmaat were roommates and used to scour the city looking for pieces for their apartment. "We loved going to flea markets and look for inexpensive, one of a kind objects." After a while, they realised that they had a true knack for finding special pieces and decided to throw a one night only shopping event. "We thought it would be like a small Tupperware party. But boy, were we wrong about that. The place was packed and we were completely sold out within hours." Verwaal and Overmaat decided to host a few more shopping nights. "We travelled all over the country
going to thrift stores and flea markets to find inventory. After a while, we went looking for retail space and from there it snowballed." In just a few years, Verwaal and Overmaat have created their own small chain of stores, with four locations in Amsterdam and one in Utrecht, where they now sell a wide variety of fashion and decor brands alongside their own collection that they design themselves.

LOCAL HEROES Daan de Greef
For the last couple of years, streetwear has taken the fashion world by storm. In Amsterdam, Daan de Greef has taken a different approach to the streetwear stream, that sets him apart from the rest. Six years ago De Greef carved out his own niche with his Baskèts stores and has steadily been building his brand in a unique way. "When I started out there were only a few sneakers stores in the city and they were all catering to an urban clientele. I felt like there was a way to approach the space with a more modern and Scandinavian aesthetic. We carry the top lines from brands like Nike and Adidas and a lot of limited editions. We are able to stock those items, because of the local relevance we have and the large following that we have amassed." Despite being around the most special pairs all day, De Greef's all-time favorite sneaker is still the humble Nike Air Force One. "It's a true classic. I'll never get tired of it. For me, a pair of sneakers has to either be pure simplicity or completely over the top, there's no middle ground." De Greef seems to have his own uncomplicated way to approach things. Even the name Baskèts isn't as complex as you might think. How he came up with it? "Google! I just looked up the French translation for the word sneaker."

msterdam is often called ‘Venice of the north’, and not without a reason. Almost everywhere you walk in the city centre, water walks with you. No less than 165 canals (all dug out in the 17th century) have a length of over 100 kilometer, containing houseboats and monumental buildings alongside. Running from the canals in the centre – from the Herengracht to the Prinsengracht - you can find lovely narrow streets that connect these iconic waters. For instance the Prinsenstraat and the Herenstraat, also know as the Royal Streets, are situated just minutes away from the big crowds, but are nonetheless relatively undiscovered. Here you can find your true treasures at designer boutiques, high-end cosmetic brands and fine jewelry stores. This is the place to be for a real shopping spree. And when you need a rest, there are also plenty of cute coffee spots, quality restaurants and some of the hippest bars in town, making this a favorite neighborhood for many locals.

Veenman: “A good example is our steak tartare, accompanied by ‘sous vide’ prepared egg yolk which has bathed in 53 degrees for 53 minutes, making it a perfect spread on the dish. With our homemade fiery kimchi and sriracha we’re adding excitement and spice, and the festive pink Chinese radish and yellow cauliflower add extra crunch and color. uts is the renewed restaurant concept of Amsterdam’s famed chefs Guillaume de Beer, Freek van Noortwijk and Johanneke van Iwaarden, also known for their popular Amsterdam restaurants BREDA, Maris Piper and Pita. After 3 years of Guts ‘N Glory, cooking quarterly themed menu’s based on ingredients or cultures, the kitchen was ready for the next step. With that, the cosy and stylish interior got a new and nice fresh touch. Guillaume de Beer: “We’ve adjusted the concept of the restaurant, we’re serving
dishes with influences from all over the world, but we take Dutch ingredients as a starting point. Guts serves a four-course menu with amuses, so that everyone enjoys our food the way we want it. You can extend your menu with 8 different a la carte dishes, which are more product based. It’s delicious food to share, like razor clams, langoustines, sweetbread nuggets, whole barbecued fish or the best charcuterie. Amazing food to enjoy, without restrictions for both the guest and the kitchen. We cook the food that we love, with bold flavours and a rough edge.” “We like our guests to fill the entire table with good food to share. Make it become a more interactive experience. ‘Lekker pielen aan tafel’, we say in Dutch. Our food is just delicious, not pretentious. Dishes like roasted cabbage with oyster butter and our signature whole Turbot from the charcoal grill, served with sea vegetables and a rich sauce from fish heads. We want to serve food people look forward to, alongside amazing natural and bio dynamic wines selected by sommelier Elske Mostert.”

The building also houses NENI Deli for fresh baked Israeli pastries, sweets and their signature sour dough bread, cocktail bar The Lemonman and private dining The Yellow Room. Brand new NENI Amsterdam is part of the internationally acclaimed restaurant group of the Molcho family. The cuisine is based on the culinary ‘Tel Aviv-inspired’ vision of founder Haya Molcho, who runs the international family business together with her sons Nuriel, Elior, Nadiv and Ilian (NENI). Nuriel Molcho: “NENI is for everyone to enjoy, it’s accessible, uncomplicated, fresh and with amazing food.” Haya Molcho: “70
percent of our menu is traditional NENI like our flavorful mezze - and 30 percent is special with a local twist. For instance: we added pickled herring to the Amsterdam menu. The cuisine of NENI is bursting with the energy of young people and its culinary influences from all over the world.” NENI is renowned for its hummus, the base for many dishes. Haya Molcho: “Everything we make is fresh and home-made, added with our love and passion for food. For our hummus for instance, we selected only the best ingredients. The tajina (sesame paste) is made with the very best sesame in the world, and so are the chickpeas we use. It takes 3 days to make our hummus, its definitely slow food.”
