Herring needs to swim
Eat your heart out interiours
Visiting Holland and not trying a classic, if not thé dutch delicacy, can be considered as a crime against good taste: pickled herring. And in June the pressure is even bigger, because this season the Dutch eat their herring just caught and fresh as a daisy. Only how to eat this raw, salted and butter soft treat served with raw chopped onion and sweet pickle? In slices with a tooth pick adorned with the dutch colours? Or in one piece by grabbing the herring by its tail? Seen its gourmand effect you probably will try both ways! To finish it off the traditional way ask the vendor for that other famed Dutch treat: a small glass of good old Dutch gin (genever).
Ever wondered what’s happening behind those grand and spotless windows of the canal houses? Elle Decoration reveals it for you in the bookazine Canal House. Apart from getting a glossy glimpse of eclectic and ‘disruptive’ 2.0 interiors you also meet some of its happy and influential inhabitants. You can find Canal House at several bookstores in Amsterdam.

Hidden green gems open up Are you are a garden lover and in Amsterdam during the third weekend of June? A passepartout (€ 20,00 at the door) gives you access to more than 30, mostly private canal gardens, the hidden green gems of ‘Mokum’. Due to the vulnerability of the houses and gardens dogs and prams are not allowed. Due to pavements and stairs, the gardens are not wheelchair accessible. And to prevent unpleasant noises wheeled cases are prohibited. While in the area, the Secret Gardens-tour is a must do as well. Situated in the famous and notorious Reguliersdwarsstraat, restaurants, coffee shops and stores have joined forces to ascertain you the Amsterdam ‘spring is in the air’ vibe. Come and see the classic jewels behind all these doors that after this weekend will close again for the rest of the year.

CONTEMPORARY VIEW ON YESTERYEAR'S FASHION Fashionistas, be advised. Amsterdam Museum is currently presenting Fashion Statements, an exhibition where Dutch fashion designers reflect on costumes from the past. The show features over 75 historical costumes, showcased in juxtaposition with the work of six contemporary couturiers. Fashion is more than just the clothes you wear. It can reveal the personality or personal views of the wearer, and dress can convey many messages. Choosing a particular type of clothing can be a statement. A specific model, fabric or color can have a precise meaning. An excellent example are the wide women’s dresses of the eighteenth century, like the robe à la Française. They were used not just as a piece of clothing, but also as a status symbol. The wider the hips looked in such a dress, the higher the social status of its wearer. Amsterdam Museum has quite the collection of historic garments such as these robes. Because of their delicacy, the items aren't often on display. But for Fashion State-
ments, the museum happily makes an exception. The show features over 75 historical items and footwear from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. The museum worked together with guest conservator Marian Duff to create a dialogue between the past and present. Duff is the founder of MAFB, an international fashion community for developing young talent and offering an alternative voice in the fashion industry. She put together a team of Dutch fashion designers and asked them to reflect on the collection of the Amsterdam Museum. The result is an inspiring set of specially designed items, presented in juxtaposition with the historical costumes. HELLOAMS.COM

Since little over a decade, the neighborhood of Amsterdam Old South sets the stage for an exciting art event every other year. ARTZUID, the Amsterdam sculpture biennial, transforms the garden of Old South into an openair museum. Expect to find the works of 50 internationally renowned artists.
ARTZUID TRANSFORMS THE ART DECO DISTRICT OF AMSTERDAM INTO AN OPEN-AIR SCULPTURE MUSEUM
in the garden of Old South ARTZUID was established in 2008. Six editions later, the sculpture route has turned into a prestigious art event, drawing international artists and audiences alike. ARTZUID places modern and contemporary figurative art pieces in the public spaces of the area. The 2019 edition has 80 sculptures and installations lined up, treating its public to an art experience. Founder and director Cyntha van Heeswijck explains. You are both the director and the founder of ARTZUID. What made you decide to bring to life a biennial sculpture route? "I wanted to enliven the Amsterdam South neighborhood and draw attention to this beautiful Art Deco district of architect H.P. Berlage. With art on the streets, I want to
stimulate the interaction between people - art as conversation pieces to ignite discussions and broaden minds". Being the director for six editions, can you say something about the evolution of this biennial? "Rudi Fuchs (former artistic director of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and curator of the 2017 edition, ed.) made the Amsterdam Sculpture Biennial ARTZUID mature and known abroad. The context of the exhibition is the starting point for inviting artists to participate. We continue on this path of making museum exhibitions in the public space because this is what makes this biennial unique in the world. And the sole focus on sculptures of course. We see a growing interest of internationally renowned artists wanting to be a part of ARTZUID. While in 2017 the emphasis was
on the development of abstract sculpture, this year will highlight figurative sculpture". What are your favourite artworks in the expo this year? "This is difficult to answer when 50 amazing artists are participating, but to name a few: Anish Kapoor, Barry Flanagan, Atelier van Lieshout, Marc Quinn, David Altmejd, Aristide Maillol, Jean Dubuffet, Jan Fabre, Jaume Plensa, Joel Shapiro, César, Armando".

Female Body Awareness Slowly but surely the amount of women artists represented in museums is rising. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam also plays its part, with a growing number of women solo shows the last few years. Ways of being, a retrospective of Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) is one of them. The exhibition presents an extensive overview, covering different halls. The show features over 200 works, varying from paintings and drawings, to films and sculptures. As a pioneer of body awareness art, Lassnig discusses the role of women in general and the female body in particular. She carefully explores the many different sensations her body made her experience, relating them to the outer world. Her discomfort or pain is often tangible.

Mystical Jewish traditions The Jewish Cultural Quarter has immersed itself with the art of Jewish mysticism of Kabbalah. Its ancient teachings have inspired many. Even pop stars like Madonna and David Bowie were drawn to the mystical tradition. To most people, however, the essence of Kabbalah remains a mystery. Kabbalah: The Art of Jewish Mysticism tries to change that. This first exhibition on the subject showcases unusual combinations of historical objects and modern works of art by artists like Barnett Newman, Marc Chagall, and Anselm Kiefer.

Crawling creatures The oeuvre of legendary sculpturist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is the star of the seventh edition in a series of annual outdoor exhibitions in the Rijksmuseum gardens. Previous versions saw the works of artists like Henry Moore (2013), Joan MirĂł (2015), and Jean Dubuffet (2017). Now, it is time for twelve works of one of the most important female artists of the twentieth century. It is the first exhibition in the Netherlands focussing entirely on Bourgeois' outdoor
sculptures. The works are like a diary of the life and work of the artist, as they express personal feelings like fear, friendship, and the body. Bourgeois became most famous for her monumental sculptures of spiders, so get ready to see a few of these crawling creatures in the gardens.

Cruising the Canals In the city that is often called ‘Venice of the North’, a canal tour is an absolute must do. From the waterside the view on the canal houses are rather spectacular. Take a boat, a bike, a board or a dive and enjoy Amsterdam’s maritime hangouts… Work and play
When you imagine that the first canals of Amsterdam where dug in the Middle Ages for water management and defense, you get a whole different perspective of your boat tour in a city founded in 1275. As the city expanded, these waterways acquired the local transport of trade, traffic and merchandise. Nowadays the canals have become the pre-eminent way to understand the history of the city. Numerous canal stories are best told by city water workers as they experience every day the challenges of its historical nature.
Get on board
There are many ways to cruise the canals. With small boats or with a classic tour boat company, sometimes over a hundred years old. The boats have been de40

signed to make the most of the view and there is a wide choice of day and evening cruises to admire the city from the water. Either for an hour or longer, including drinks and food in all its variations. Every company of any importance has its history and the names of the ships will appeal to the imagination. One of the oldest shipping companies is Rederij Kooij on the Rokin. Part of their fleet consists of historic boats with names like President John F. Kennedy or Princes Irene. The John F. Kennedy was once selected “most beautiful boat of Amsterdam”. The boats are usually kept in their original state and some of them have shown the city to many celebrities, politicians and royals of all nations, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, and a memorable canal day, the Dutch National soccer team for the 1988 Europe Cup.
From fisherman to canal captain
One of the skippers from Rederij Kooij is Gerard Schilder, sailing the canals already for twenty-two years. After being a fisherman on large territorial waters, it took him some time to get used to the small canals and numerous bridges, “but now I wouldn’t trade it for the world”, he says. “In winter I love the naked trees for better views on the canal houses, and spring is favorite for the atmosphere”, says Schilder. “Every season has its charm.” Most of all he loves his Sunday morning shifts when the city slowly awakes and the tourists enjoy their tour in a more relaxing atmosphere. And when he passes his favorite spot on the Reguliersgracht, with a view on the seven bridges, he feels one of the happiest guys in the world. “But also Kromme Waal and Oude Schans are highlights that make my heart jump a little.”
disabled and they work with various charity foundations to release the worries of the less abled. “I find this the most satisfying part of my job and especially a great joy with children to forget their everyday worries.” Next to the on board audio system, Tamminga likes to tell, matching his guests, fun and special stories about Amsterdam. In his free time, he navigates the more unknown parts of the canals that only smaller boats can approach.
“THERE ARE MORE CRABS AND CRAYFISH IN THESE WATERS THAN CITY INHABITANTS”
Foundations
For the company Blue Boat Ruben Tamminga has been a captain for six years, after starting on smaller boats in his younger years. “I love my job for all the different variations of guests and how they personally experience the pleasures of a canal cruise”, he says. Some of the Blue Boat vessels are specially adjusted for the
City water sports
With tourism increasing in a fast and varied way, both captains see the growth of commercial and private boats. Since a few years the Amstel is even transforming into a sporty hangout with water bikes, rowing boats, sup-boards and swimming. The canal waters are cleaner than most people think. Three times a week the varied city surrounding locks are closed and fresh water is pumped from the adjacent IJsselmeer lake. There are more crabs and crayfish in these waters than city inhabitants and the variation of fauna is amazing. Geese, swans and coots and herons sit alongside the waterfront to fish. And when they feel like it, they will accompany you during your trip on the water.

When you decide to hit the Amsterdam waves yourself, it’s good to get to know some of the rules on the water. Even though all Unesco canals together count no less than 14 kilometers, if you were to put all the Amsterdam fined boats into service, you would come easily to more than 7. So you can imagine the crowds on sunny days. To maintain some order on the water, Amsterdam has drawn up some rules:
- PAY ATTENTION TO ONE-WAY TRAFFIC - NO LOUD MUSIC ON BOARD - NO WASTE OVERBOARD - NO ALCOHOL WHILE STEERING - ALWAYS KEEP STARBOARD SHORE (TO THE RIGHT OF THE MIDDLE) - LARGE (PROFESSIONAL) BOATS HAVE PRIORITY - STARBOARD SHORE HAS PRIORITY - MAXIMUM SPEED IS 6 KM/H Want to know more? At the Pancake Bakery you can dive into one in a unique historical venue located on the Prinsengracht. Just a stone’s throw away from the Royal Streets and the Anne Frank House. The recipe is simple, the result tastes divine… Dutch pancakes traditionally come with topping like syrup, cinnamon sugar or apple and bacon. But at the Bakery they also serve them Mexican and Italian style. And they also have poffertjes.

MADE IN AMSTERDAM PROUD TO PRESENT
People tend to believe that ‘everything is better at a distance’. But here we show you the opposite: three Amsterdam based brands with local production and an international feel.
EL JEFE PRIMO SALSA 5 years ago, a Dutch marketeer laid down a career in advertising to create El Jefe, the very first Original Dutch Mexican Hotsauce. Since then, his salsa spread from his kitchen table to one of the biggest supermarket chains in the Netherlands.
What is the story of El Jefe? “It started in our family home in Mexico, where cooking for each other is a big part of the culture. Everyone has their own recipe for hot sauce. We were inspired by the variety and possibilities; there are so many beautiful ingredients at the local markets there. So we developed our own recipe in our kitchen in Amsterdam-West and started smuggling the ingredients into the Netherlands.” Smuggling peppers? How did that go? (laughs) “It was all a bit shady in the beginning, picking up suitcases filled with peppers at the airport in Amsterdam... But to be honest, importing rare peppers like the ones we use is completely legal. Now we buy them from a wholesale market in Mexico, which buys them from local farmers at a fair price. They still come in suitcases every now and then though. Once in Amsterdam, we combine the ingredients into a sauce that is as pure as it comes: we don’t use any artificial flavoring, added sugars, water or preservatives. That’s also what sets us apart from big corporates.” What else has changed since you’ve started? “After discovering that people actually liked it, I made a small production facility in our storage box. A few local shops like The Maker Store, Het Faire Oosten and Sterk gave me a chance to sell my sauce. I’m still grateful for that. As we grew, I had to find another solution for production. I ended up at the ‘Tuin van Bret’, a local sustainability project at Amsterdam Sloterdijk. That became the home of Factoria Picante. We’re able to provide the entire country with salsa from this 50m2 of factory ground. You can buy it at stores, restaurants and even at Albert Heijn supermarket.”
‘THE SAUCE STARTED IN OUR KITCHEN IN AMSTERDAM, BUT THE INGREDIENTS COME FROM A MEXICAN SUITCASE’
What’s next for El Jefe? “The dream is to become a world famous sauce. Or maybe a world famous Mexican wrestler. Right now, we’re preparing for the upcoming Wild West Brew Fest, a local streetfestival at the Bos en Lommerplantsoen on the 6th of July. There you can taste craft beers, eat Mexican food with our salsa, watch a Mexican wrestling match and participate in a hot pepper eating contest. It’s free and you’re all invited!”

MADE IN AMSTERDAM Proud to present
MARIE-STELLA-MARIS If you’ve stayed in hotels or restaurants in Amsterdam, chances are big that you’ve enjoyed one of Marie-Stella-Maris’ products. The Amsterdam-based social enterprise that started with water, continues to contribute to a better world with their natural care products. We talk to marketing and communication manager, Josha Jansen. How did it all start? “In 2010 the UN proclaimed clean drinking water a human right. Marie-Stella-Maris exists to help make clean drinking water available everywhere by selling high-end products. Our Foundation contributes to areas of the world where this is not yet a given. For every bottle of water sold, 5ct per liter is donated, together with 5 percent of turnover on our care products. We expect to have donated 1 million euro’s this June.” A combination of water and careproducts, that’s unusual isn’t it? “It is! But because of our mission, soap is logical. There is a strong link between clean drinking water and hygiene. In many developing countries there is a need for infrastructure and access to safe water, but this is only possible when combined with education on hygiene and sanitation. So we sell water and soap. Plus, both are caring for your body from the inside and outside.” How do you select projects to support? “We are always careful not to disrupt local markets, but help the people there to become self-sufficient. The Zambian Jacana Business Empowerment initiative is an example of that. They aim to educate local technical workers to learn to build water pumps, and stimulate the selling of these pumps with financial help. Locals can ask for this financial help if they have a plan to generate income with the water they get. They share the water with their family and neighbors, and use it to grow crops to sell on the local market. In this way, the project helps to create a local economy.”
‘WATER IS MORE THAN JUST A SUBSTANCE TO DRINK OR SHOWER IN. IT’S BRICKS, CROPS, FOOD’ 50

How are the products made and where can I find them? “Our mineral water comes from a source in Germany. It is bottled there and distributed in the Netherlands and Belgium. Our care products are made here in The Netherlands, with natural ingredients. You can order our water at the high end hotels and restaurants and find our care products in their bathrooms. We have only one store: in the Nine Streets. Come in and smell our bestselling fragrance, Objects d’Amsterdam. It’s inspired by the city and our iconic, clean and sparkling scent.”

‘WIJNAND FOCKINK WAS COMPARABLE TO COMPANIES LIKE COURVOISIER AND MOET & CHANDON’
WIJNAND FOCKINK Even for people from Amsterdam it is quite a surprise that in the middle of the center – near Dam square – every year 55 thousand bottles of spirits and liquors are distilled by hand. A heritage from a guy named Wijnand Fockink who started almost 300 years ago his own distillery and tasting tavern here. “Even his drinks are still on the menu”, says Max Aker, brand ambassador. It is not easy to find you guys in this small alley behind the National Monument. How did you end up here? “When Fockink started here in 1689, VOC ships brought in spices, exotic fruits and sugar coming in through the IJ onto the Dam, where a flourishing trade was going on. Fockink used all these exotic ingredients to make high class liquors. In those days really expensive drinks that only people like the Bilderbergs and the Rockefellers could afford. After his dead his successors continued his work and at the beginning of the 20th century Wijnand Fockink had trading houses and depots all over Europa and was a purveyor to more than 15 royal households. At one stage the house could compare itself with brands like Courvoisier and Moët&Chandon. These days you can find the drinks still at the Pijlsteeg where you still have to bend over the counter, just like the Rockefellers did. Bend over the counter? “Yes, we serve our drinks with a ‘head’ as Dutch people want value for their money. But it’s impossible to lift a glass with a head without spilling. So it became a tradition to bow for the drink with the hands on the back and slurp the first sip out of the glass. Everybody has to strike this pose …”
So all the liquors, gins and genevers that are distilled here on the premises are produced exactly the same way as 340 years ago? “As much as possible. Piet van Leijenhorst, our master distiller and working for us more than 30 years - knows all the old recipes by heart. Together with other distillers he produces more than 40 thousand liters of spirits a year. We fill the bottles by hand and put on the lables ourselves. Just like the old days…” But what is the challenge, besides doing the same thing as 340 years ago? “Keeping our taste constant. Because we work with only natural ingredients, flavors can vary. Piet and his team need to taste a lot and adjust where needed. But also, we invent new spirits. Like the IPA Jenever that was launched last year. A beer and a jenever together makes the typical Dutch combination ‘kopstoot’, but here you have both tastes in one glass. I am quite sure this one will last for centuries.”

VINTAGE GLAMOUR I.Ma.Gi.N. Jewels offers timeless elegance
At the time that Laura Dols started her eponimous shop in the Nine Streets, it was just after the Summer of Love and everyone in Amsterdam wanted to be a hippie. So did the young Laura, so she quit school and started to sell vintage flower dresses. How did you end up at the Nine Streets? I just put up a poster saying ‘I am looking for a shop’. The next day a guy told me ‘I have a shop’. Hard to believe, as the Nine Streets is now one of the most expensive and popular area’s in town. What was it like here in those days? It couldn’t be more different. Residents were leaving their canal houses and offices started to move in. And with the people, retailers like the butcher, the baker, the grocery stores: they all left. A lot of properties were empty and the streets were dark and shady. What were you selling? Mainly vintage flower dresses. I knew a good sorting shop where to get the real grandma ones. Because of the low rents more creative and unique businesses arrived here and during the eighties and nineties there was such a good and vibrant flow here. Do you miss it? In a way I do. It’s mainly flagship stores now, from big international brands. Nothing unique. But it’s still a very good place to shop. With lots of well-arranged shops and lovely cafés and restaurants. And do you still sell flower dresses? Nope. With the growth of vintage stores in Amsterdam I started to focus on evening and bridal dresses. So if you’re in for some glamour, you must definitely come and see my collection. All unique and one-of-a-kind… Wolvenstraat 7 | +31 (0)20 624 9066 | lauradols.nl
"A jewel is more than a fashion accessory, it represents a statement of your character”, say Margaux and Gilles – founders of the Belgium jewelry brand Imagin Jewels. Both creatives have a production/manufacturing jewelry background and are therefore heavily involved in producing their collection. This makes Imagine Jewels a brand with a strong personality and a clear view on what jewelry represents. Born in the heart of the city of diamonds – Antwerp - Imagin Jewels is a jewelry brand inspired by the timeless elegance of traditional fine jewelry. Also it desires to combine proven craftsmanship with innovative design and the use of natural materials from silver to gold, and semiprecious stones to diamonds. "ONLY IDIOTS PAY MORE"
400 YEARS OLD SHOPPING HUB No better area for a relaxed stroll in the district between the big canals just behind the Palace on the Dam, called the Nine Streets. In fact, there are only three streets, crossed by two main canals - Herengracht and Keizersgracht - which makes up for nine small streets. This shopping area was 400 years ago, during the Golden Age, a bustling and lively trade area. And in its own authentic character it still is. The names of streets – like the Huidenstraat which means Street of (leather) Skin - refer to certain industries (f.i. leather processing) that were once situated here. Until the nineties of the last century it was just a neighborhood where locals got their daily groceries at the bakery, the butcher and other ordinary grocery stores. Apart from an occasional bakery, they all disappeared. Slowly replaced by small and hip designer shops, bric-a-bracs, vintage stores, trendy hairdressers and bookshops, restaurants and small café’s. Away from the big commercial shopping hub, you’ll be surprised what they have to offer. In between the window viewing and shopping, grab a lunch in one of the fancy restaurants or have a locally brewed beer in a typical ‘bruin’ café.

O
n a beautiful corner on the De Clerqstraat in Amsterdam West, Bar Ramona has just opened its doors. A rock ‘n roll-bistro with an all-day-café and a neighborhood bar who’s name was inspired by an unruly, tough and sexy ‘femme fatale’. One of the men responsible for this classic yet sensual name is co-owner Riad Farhat: ‘Ramona combines the past with the future, rocking fresh elements in a stunning bright venue”, he explains. “We serve everything from breakfast and specialty coffee in the morning to lunch in the afternoon and dinner and drinks till late hours.’ Colleage and co-owner Bram Smit - responsible for Ramona’s kitchen – adds: ‘Ramona serves quality food against competitive
prices in a casual atmosphere. Think of an Amsterdam ‘eetcafé’, but then reinvented to modern times.’ A look on the menu illustrates his words with a weekly returning day special containing comfort food like falafel, pan fried dover sole and ‘zuurvlees’ (Dutch beef stew from Limburg) for no more than 16 euros. Besides these culinary treats Ramona offers a large selection of beers (12 craft on tap), original wines, G&T’s and a selection of signature house cocktails and mocktails. Must tries are the house originals like the Sparkling Cosmo or the Ruby Black Tea Punch. Who’s in for a party can also order beers and cocktails served in pitchers as there is always time left to drink alone. Ramona’s ‘old brown café meets mod-
ern eclectic twist’-looks were developed together with Studio Modijefski, an interior design group that is also responsible for the looks of 20 (!) other Amsterdam hotspots owned by the successful 3 WO Group, like Waterkant, Biertuin, Bar Bukowski, Maxwell, Bar Botanique and Louie Louie. Farhat: “In the daytime Ramona is quite lively, but as soon as the sun goes down, she shows her intimate and cozy character. Her biggest achievement is her large terrace though where she catches the sun early morning, and in the late afternoon. Just in time for the aperitivo-hour.”

noon and 10 pm with classics like Côte-duBoeuf, salad niçoise and Lobster. The chef, Vincent Garcia, was born in Picardie and his love for the traditional French cuisine dates back to his childhood, tasting the dishes from his grandmother and mother. Garcia: ‘The diversity within the French cuisine with all its various styles is incredible and has always been a big inspiration for me as a chef. At Le Coeur I want to bring these styles together in a modern way.’ Like in France, wine also plays an important role at the bistrothèque, with a large selection of the best French wines per glass and bottle. It enables guests to discover and try several exclusive wines on one night. Le Coeur welcomes all guests: the gentleman that walks in for a glass of Cha-
blis and six oysters, or the ones that want to enjoy a full dinner night. The design of Le Coeur is warm and intimate and it suits the cosy atmosphere of the Nine Streets. Inside it’s lively and a little bit noisy, with waiters walking around with mouthwatering dishes. Definitely a place that invites you to enjoy food and wine, as soon as you set foot at the door. FIKO Italian Food Experience & Italian Casual Food
W
hen Adriano Favia moved to Amsterdam, he was missing a good, modern Italian restaurant where he could enjoy the food from home. So he opened one himself. First an Italian Food Experience in Amsterdam West and just lately Casual Food in the vibrant area De Pijp. Favia called his restaurants Fiko, which means ‘cool’ in Italian. And when you see the interior of Favia’s hangouts you understand why. The first restaurant he opened in the summer of 2017, is combining Italian fine dining with contemporary and glamourous design in black and gold. Favia: “It’s about the full experience. It’s not just the food, but also the interior, the music, the service: everything.” And although the restaurant at De Pijp carries this same approach, with its green and gold interior it looks more casual and the focus is more on (sharing) pizza in a laid back-setting. Fiko Italian Food Experience became quite famous for their Gold Richezza pizza (88 euros): an uber-luxurious pizza made with only expensive ingredients, like buffalo mozzarella, truffle cream, porcini mushrooms, caramelized cherry tomatoes and Evo oil from Puglia. The most exclusive ingredients are however the white truffle-flavored 23k roasted golden nuggets and 23k golden leaves. Favia: ‘The gold is edible and surely adds a glamourous touch.’ 90 percent of Favia's team is Italian and all his chefs are from Puglia and Naples. They know exactly where to get the best Italian ingredients: ham from Parma, burrata from Puglia, and other cured meats, cheeses, olive oil and pastas find their way to the
Fiko-kitchens. Favia: ‘And the use of these quality products show of, as international superstars like formula 1 driver Louis Hamilton, DJ Martin Garrix and designer Tommy Hilfiger truly love our food. To hear them say that we have the best pasta and pizza in the world, is incredible.’

An architect and urban designer, Soeters has made a considerable contribution to the egalitarian vision of Amsterdam over the past decades. He believes that a residential area based on high-rise projects will never be a good neighbourhood. "Tall buildings stand isolated, leaving the surrounding area with a relatively empty feel. This has a negative impact on social safety."
SOETERS’ ROUTE
Sjoerd Soeters has left his mark in Amsterdam since 1979. This route will show you the highlights.
1
Java Island (1989) Eastern Islands “My first urban design assignment proved a major turning point in how I view architecture. Never again would I build anything that is divorced from its context.”
2
Blaauwlakenblok (2000) corner of Warmoesstraat/ St. Annenstraat “I couldn’t make a straight building for the Warmoesstraat as this street meanders all over the place and the façades are all askew. So, the façade is discontinuous, windows are suspended like drops of water and the white façade widens at the top. There is no symmetry to be found in this building at all.”
3 HOUTHAVENS
Architect office (1988), Kerkstraat 204 “I covered the façade of the Baptist chapel, which was quite ugly, with this aluminium corrugated sheet façade. Inside we placed two floors with a mezzanine in the centre and a sliding roof for natural light.”
Soeters’ work in Amsterdam is primarily inspired by the typical features of traditional urban space and a traditional townscape: alternating water and quays, and a regular diversity of buildings and bridges causing eye-level differences. “And very importantly: all on a human scale,” he adds. The latest project showcasing all these features is the Houthavens in Amsterdam West. An old industrial area consisting of seven islands is being transformed into a lively green residential area, offering property for the owner-occupier, rental and social housing markets. Soeters: “The plan for the Houthavens was designed by Ton Schaap and Jan Brouwer from the city's Spatial Planning Department. I refined the plan a bit, created an image quality plan and have been involved as a supervisor since. The image quality plan involves giving each island its own identity referring to, among other things, important architectural periods of Amsterdam: the late nineteenth century, the Amsterdam School, and the
buildings by Dudok. There are canal houses, houseboats, bridges and warehouses.” Soeters owes the Houthavens assignment to an urban design master plan he developed for Amsterdam's Java Island in the early nineties. This island, which used to be one of the trade islands in Amsterdam East where large cargo ships docked, had to be transformed into a residential area. It was during these activities that Soeters realised that architecture cannot happen without a prior urban design master plan that allows the architecture to manifest itself. Until that time, he had considered context primarily as something to rebel against. Soeters: “When I arrived here in 1975, the city had a different signature than it does today. Amsterdam was raw with a lot of overdue maintenance. The city centre was largely cloaked in scaffolding and the canals mostly served as sewers.” His first project was a canal house with a Venetian façade on the Prinsengracht. He transformed HELLOAMS.COM

Johan Cruijff Arena (previously called Amsterdam Arena) “Rob Schuurman was the architect, and I was the co-architect. My contributions include the load-bearing staircases and the gold/ silver-coloured gate (the Rolex building). Twenty years later, we are working on enlarging the spaces around the seating areas.”
SOETERS’ WORK IN AMSTERDAM IS PRIMARILY INSPIRED BY THE TYPICAL FEATURES OF THE TRADITIONAL TOWNSCAPE
5
Krijtstreeppakhuis (1999) – Brouwersgracht “A warehouse burnt to the ground here in 1910. In the following decades, a low building housed a sewing workshop, until we designed another double warehouse. The Krijtstreeppakhuis, which translates as 'Pinstripe Warehouse', owes its name to the white seams articulating the façade lines, arches and openings.“
thousands of square metres into seven apartments, one of which became his home and office. The façade was painted in diluted Venetian red: salmon pink. Ten years on, he gave a futuristic aluminium façade to the Martin Luther King chapel, which had been built in 1969. This building, located in the Kerkstraat, was destined to become Soeters' offices. His first designs were quite eye-catching. “I admit: for the first ten years of my career I was obsessed about architecture, and was mainly concerned with making a statement.” In the early days of the Java Island plans, Soeters visited the island in a small boat. And as he moored his vessel there, he noticed that the relatively high position of the quay offered little contact with the water. Soeters: “So, I proposed to give the island canals with low quays that would facilitate contact with the water. If you look 80

closely, you will recognise the historic identity of Amsterdam and its typical human scale. The houses are in direct contact with the streets, people are walking outside, and the higher position of the bridges creates eye-level differences as you walk around – just like in the city centre. This is a lovely place to live.” A couple of years ago, Soeters changed the name of his agency to PPHP, which stands for Pleasant Places, Happy People. The slogan perfectly summarises his perspective on the goal of urban design and architecture. The fact that he distances himself from the highrise projects that have been popping up since the crisis should come as no surprise. Soeters: “The municipality is selling these plots as separate pieces of land. They are then densely built on, in order to optimise revenues, and with little regard for cohesion with the surroundings. Boy, will they end up regretting it…”
6
The Venetian Palazzo (Warnsinck 1853 – Soeters 1979) Prinsengracht 151
“My first project in Amsterdam ended up becoming our home and office. We have lived there for almost forty years.”
7
Oostpoort (2002) Amsterdam Oost “Shopping Centre Oostpoort is positioned like an appendix to the Linneausstraat. We wanted to pull visitors as far into the area as possble, but return them to the Linneausstraat as well. We accomplished this by creating a loop of shops that has something new to offer every time.”
8
De Piramides (2004), Jan van Galenstraat “The two overlapping buildings with stepped-gabled fronts were inspired by the triangular shape of the Marcanti Island where they are located. But they also secretly refer to the place where I used to buy my Christmas trees. The municipality wanted to have a prominent building here, in order to draw attention to the neighbourhood that lies hidden in the inside bend of this street. Mission accomplished.”
9
10
Het Blauwe Huis, Weespertrekvaart “This private home was constructed on a free plot which gave a lot of freedom. The colour is based on the Blue House by Monet in Zaandam. What stands out is that the ‘mandatory’ garden wall has been integrated into the façade of the house. This ‘elevates’ the living area for more privacy and a great view of the water.”
Houthavens, Amsterdam West “A magnificent project in the historic ports of Amsterdam where wood was processed back in the days. Residential and commercial buildings are being realised on seven islands, with various architectural styles of Amsterdam being interpreted. This is an exemplary project for the expansion of the city.”

SHADY SHADES There are few accessories that have the power to bring an old outfit up to date quite like a pair of sunglasses. As an integral part of any fashion aficionado's uniform, they've grown up from being an accessory to a firm sartorial fixture. Think of the shady shades of late legend Karl Lagerfeld, or the inseparable goggles from Vogue’s chief Anna Wintour. No wonder sunglasses trends always catch on the quickest. Pick your choice for the summer of ’19.
SCHMIDT OPTIEK When you buy glasses at one of the oldest opticians in the country, who has also been a Royal Warrant Holder for more than 75 years, you can certainly expect quality. This is the case at Schmidt Optiek, where quality is presented together with old-fashioned courtesy and excellent service. Something that is not so obvious nowadays. The interior dates from the early 20th century and in the store you will still find showpieces from long-gone times: ivory glasses and tubes made from ray skin. But of course you can also come in for modern (sun) glasses from Silhouette, Dries van Noten, Ray Ban, Persol, Tom Ford, Gucci, Chanel and so on. More than enough reasons to take a look.
